Abstract:
Remote sensing technology is one of the best methods for the large-scale monitoring of chlorophyll in crops. This study analyzes the feasibility of estimating the contents of chlorophyll by means of narrow band normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVInb). The reflectance of the two bands forming the NDVInbis from simulations run on the PROSPECT model. A traversal of possible combinations of NDVInbare examined from 400 nm to 800 nm. Our results indicate that, at the leaf level, estimation of chlorophyll content can be identified in NDVInb. Ranges for these bands include: 1) 720-735 nm combined with 400-428 nm; 2) 550-615 nm, 692-701 nm or 707-715 nm combined with 400-432 nm or 462-496 nm; 3) 562-589 nm, 616-662 nm or 729-737 nm combined with 434-454 nm; and 4) 664-687 nm combined with 550-615 nm or 692-701 nm.

Abstract:
Abstract. Within the framework of the ENVISAT/-SCIAMACHY satellite validation, solar irradiance spectra are absolutely measured at moderate resolution in the UV/visible spectral range (in the UV from 316.7–418 nm and the visible from 400–652 nm at a full width half maximum resolution of 0.55 nm and 1.48 nm, respectively) from aboard the azimuth-controlled LPMA/DOAS balloon gondola at around 32 km balloon float altitude. After accounting for the atmospheric extinction due to Rayleigh scattering and gaseous absorption (O3, and NO2), the measured solar spectra are compared with previous observations. Our solar irradiance is +1.6% larger than the re-calibrated Kurucz et al. (1984) solar spectrum (Fontenla et al., 1999, called MODTRAN 3.5) in the visible spectral range (435–650 nm), +1.5% larger in the (370–415 nm) wavelength interval, but −4% smaller in the UV spectral range (316.7–370 nm), when the Kurucz spectrum is convolved to the spectral resolution of our instrument. The same comparison with the SOLSPEC solar spectrum (Thuillier et al., 1997, 1998a, b) confirms the somewhat larger solar irradiance (+1.7%) measured by the balloon instrument from 435–500 nm, but not from 500–650 nm, where the SOLSPEC is −1.3% lower than MODTRAN 3.5. Comparison of the SCIAMACHY solar spectrum from channels 1 to 4 (– re-calibrated by the University of Bremen –) with MODTRAN 3.5 indicates an agreement of +0.2% in the visible spectral range (435–585 nm). With this calibration, the SCIAMACHY solar spectrum is congruent with the balloon observations (−1%) in the 316.7–370 nm wavelength range, but both are up to −5%/−3% smaller than MODTRAN 3.5 and SOLSPEC, respectively. In agreement with findings of Skupin et al. (2002) our study emphasizes that the present ESA SCIAMACHY level 1 calibration is systematically +15% larger in the considered wavelength intervals when compared to all available other solar irradiance measurements.

Abstract:
The Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at the coudé focus of the Shane 3 m telescope at Lick Observatory permits us to obtain high resolution spectra of bright planetary nebulae over the spectral range from 3500á to 10300á. Not only is it possible to separate pairs such as λ 5198, 5200 [NI], 4860 HeII and 4861 HI, but one may secure the profiles of Doppler broadened lines. It appears to be possible to separate the HI and HeI contributions of the 3889 line in Hu 1–2. The nebulae most suitable for observation are those of high surface brightness. NGC 7027 was the first nebula intensively studied with this equipment (Keyes et al. 1990); subsequently we have observed NGC 2440, 6537, 6543, 6567, 6572, 6741, 7009, 7662, IC 351, 418, 2149, 2165, 4634, 4997, 5217, Hb 12, and Hu 1–2. In NGC 7009 we measured line fluxes at the ends of major and minor axes. Small compact objects were centered on the slit; other were observed in the bright ring. These planetary nebulae cover a range in excitation level, chemical composition, and evolutionary status.

Abstract:
Objective. This study aims to describe the clinical features in terms of pain perception, ankle range of motion, and foot volume in participants with recurrent ankle sprains compared with first-time sprains. Methods. Individuals with grade I and II ankle sprains were referred to physiotherapy care for further rehabilitation by their general practitioner. Primary outcome measures were range of movement, pain, and foot volume. Recurrences were described according to engagement in sport. Results. A total of 115 participants were recruited (age = 22.2 ± 6.9 years; female, 84). Neither pain level (P = .822), nor range of motion (dorsiflexion P = .452; plantar flexion P = .436; inversion P = .383; eversion P = .657), nor foot volume (P = .654) were significantly different between the groups: individuals with first-time sprain or with recurrences. Conclusion. Pain and high existence of other lower-limb injuries were reported disregarding the presence of a recurrence. Clinically, it is difficult to differentiate recurrent sprain from a first-time ankle sprain by means of foot volume, range of movement, or pain intensity.

Abstract:
Summary: Three classes of cytochrome a deficient mutants of Bacillus subtilis have been isolated. These classes were defined by concentration ratios of cytochromes a, b and c relative to the parent strain, and by responses to non-fermentable substrates. The cytochrome deficiencies were not due to blocks in haem biosynthesis or to failure of the control mechanisms which alter the respiratory chain during growth of B. subtilis. Mutational loss of cytochrome a did not reduce proportionately the rate of oxygen consumption by late exponential phase cells, although exponential growth rates were generally lower than the parent strain. The cytochrome system of wild-type B. subtilis appears to contain cytochromes a (or a+a3), b, c, c1, and o. A previously unreported absorption maximum at 617 nm was discovered, which was elevated in some of the cytochrome a deficient mutants. In these mutants, a new maximum also appeared at 627 nm.

Ghafran, Chaudhry. "Audit committees and financial reporting quality." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4308/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of audit committee characteristics on financial reporting quality in the context of a large sample of UK companies over the period 2007-2010. The notion of financial reporting quality is assessed by looking at the audit quality and earnings quality of the firms. This study utilises the audit fee and non-audit fee ratio as its proxies for audit quality and accruals based earnings management models as its proxies for earnings quality. The findings from the multivariate analysis show that audit committee meetings and financial expertise exert a significant positive impact on audit fees. Investigating expertise further, this study finds no support for the notion that accounting expertise influences audit fees, however a significant positive influence on audit fees is recorded for the non-accounting financial expertise. However, the holding of additional directorships has a significant negative impact on audit fees. This study also finds that audit committee members' financial expertise has a negative and significant impact on non-audit fee ratio suggesting a strong support of members with financial expertise on issues relating to auditor independence. The study also documents that audit committee members serving longer on the boards do not prefer to purchase high amount of non-audit services from the incumbent auditor. This study also records a significant positive impact of the holding of additional directorships on the provision of non-audit fee ratio, thus signifying a profound support for the busyness hypothesis which argues that overstretched directors are not very good monitors of financial reporting quality. Furthermore, this study finds broadly consistent evidence that audit committees meeting three or more times per year and fully independent audit committees exert a significant positive impact on the quality of reported earnings. This study also finds some evidence (depending on the earnings model used) that the level of ownership of audit committee members also exerts a positive impact on the quality of reported earnings, highlighting the fact that audit committee members with an equity stake in their companies are considered more effective in their oversight of the financial reporting process. On the other hand, this study finds evidence that the busyness of audit committee members (busyness defined in terms of the holding of board seats in other companies) has a significant negative impact on the quality of reported earnings. The composite variables (i.e. ACE1, ACE2, ACE3 and ACE4) representing those companies that satisfy all aspects of current best practice in terms of audit committee composition and operation, has a positive impact on the quality of reported earnings. This study covers the period 2007 to 2010 and therefore offers a contemporary analysis of the influence of audit committee characteristics on financial reporting quality. The study is very comprehensive in its scope not only in the selection of audit committee characteristics and methods employed to quantify these characteristics, but also in the use of various proxies developed to capture the true essence of financial reporting quality. The choice of multiple measurement methods both for the dependent and independent variables facilitates a much richer investigation into the relationship between governance and financial reporting quality variables. Therefore this study makes a major contribution to our understanding of the association between the various audit committee characteristics and financial reporting quality in the wake of recently introduced regulatory recommendations. These findings will also have policy implications as regulators around the world continue to define and refine the desired characteristics and behaviour of audit committees. Therefore, the findings of this study will ensure future policy changes regarding audit committees are adequately informed.

Eltweri, Ahmed Mohamed El Hadi. "An investigation into the Auditing Profession Regulatory Framework and the factors influencing the adoption of ISAs in the Libyan context." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2015. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4438/.

Full text
Abstract:
Accounting information for decision making needs to be reliable, unless the information is audited, it cannot be regarded as reliable. Therefore, although extensive research in the area of accounting in general, and auditing in particular, has been conducted in the developed countries, similar investigations within developing countries have so far been relatively limited. Moreover, global financial crises, the most recent in 2007/8, have increased the pressures for better regulations with the aim of harmonising the auditing profession globally. This study therefore aims to help fill the gap in research and to provide recommendations to the governing body of the Libyan auditing profession, in order to address the difficulties faced by the profession, and advance and improve the quality of professional auditing practice. This study is predominantly positivist in essence, but, based on the nature of the problem and research questions, a mixed methods approach to gathering data from stakeholders in the auditing profession is adopted. A questionnaire (196 respondents), and a set of semi-structured interviews (nine participants), represent the quantitative and qualitative instruments of the study respectively. The research sample for both empirical exercises is comprised of individuals from five different groups representing the Libyan auditing profession stakeholders. This wide spread of participants is selected in order to generate valid, reliable, generalizable, and meaningful data, and conclusions. The overall conclusion drawn from the analysis is that the Libyan audit profession regulations are considered inadequate by the profession itself, since they fall short of meeting international standards, as supported by the fact that many foreign companies invest in Libya, and they insist on their auditing using ISAs as a guarantee of transparent and high quality auditing. The Libyan audit profession is unwilling to implement these international standards, and this weakness needs to be addressed. Furthermore, issues relating to licensing, accounting and auditing education, examination for entry to the profession, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) must all be reviewed. In addition, a new regulatory framework, that involves government supervision, and the use of internationally-recognised standards in the performance of auditing duties, must be introduced. In terms of the most appropriate regulatory approach, the results indicated that the independent regulator model is preferred; and with respect to auditing standards, the study finds that the preferred approach is to harmonise all auditing standards used in Libya, and to adopt the ISAs with certain modifications that suit the Libyan context. Furthermore, the study sample identified six factors that impact positively on the adoption of the ISAs, and a further six factors that had negative influences. This research contributes to the body of literature by filling the gap regarding the Libyan auditing profession in general, and identifying factors that have an impact on the adoption of ISAs in particular. Recommendations are provided to the authority responsible for supervising the Libyan auditing profession that essentially require the upgrading of all professionals, and perseverance to ensure national and international development of the profession in particular, and to other countries with similar characteristics in general.

Hill, Denys Alan. "A chaos related investigation into small manufacturing business financial decision-making dynamics." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4383/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the fact that small manufacturing businesses are still the core of manufacturing in the UK very little is known about their financial dynamics. This thesis investigates these activities from a chaos and chaos theory related standpoint. Since chaos treats dynamic situations, and businesses are intrinsically dynamic, a reasonable expectation is that the one is relevant to the other. However as the research progressed, into detailed appraisals, it became evident that initial, optimistic expectations regarding their relevance were ill-founded. Therefore a conclusion is reached that chaos and chaos theory, despite a voluminous literature, have little relevance to financial decision-making in small manufacturing businesses. The greater part of chaos literature relates to various branches of mathematics, the physical and life sciences. Economics occupies third place. Paucity of references to small manufacturing businesses justifies attempts, such as this, to bridge the gap between them and chaos by explanatory and, interpretative research. Chaos is the main artery, one of two main divisions. It is sub-divided into chaos, the condition, chaos and related theories, and chaology, the techniques. The other main division comprises first an extended study of small manufacturing businesses, which have many, sometimes difficult-to-quantify, financial variables, and secondly hands-on experience as an owner/manager. Evaluating the two, by comparing and contrasting, was intended to be central to the thesis. Instead it became apparent that no there is no pre-existing agreement on key factors. Formulating working definitions ameliorates the problem and allows the evaluation of chaos, in the context of varied financial success in small manufacturing businesses, as well as other theories, to proceed. The financial information needs of their decision-makers, typically owner/managers focus the evaluation. Contributions to knowledge are two. First is finding chaos to be only marginally relevant. Secondly, at the end of the research when considering chaological techniques, a chain of thought is triggered which leads to a novel, technology-basesd mall manufacturing business financial information technique. Small business computerised accounting, and factory loading systems, image processing, (in which hands-on experience, mentioned in the study was gained), pattern recognition, shape analysis and artificial intelligence are combined in the technique.

Philpott, Rachel. "Structural textiles : adaptable form and surface in three dimensions." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2011. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/434/.

Full text
Abstract:
My PhD research develops production processes incorporating origami folding, shibori, additive printing and fusing techniques to create textiles that sustain three-dimensional, adaptable form with little or no supporting substructure. In these materials the textile surface itself becomes structural. The controlled packing, deployment and structural stability offered by predetermined folds in planar surfaces are extremely beneficial in many situations e.g. engineering, architecture and product design. I have devised transferable templates of folding that can be reinterpreted in a variety of material weights and scales that have potential for application in a number of these areas. The inherent mobility of these structural textiles, combined with the judicious choice of substrate and materials applied through printing and fusing, enables properties such as thermal or sound insulation, electrical conductivity or light transmission to be varied, as the situation demands. The textiles created are not only autonomous physical entities but also speculative design models. Such developments more usually originate from material science, engineering and textile technology contexts. However, by building on research carried out by these disciplines to develop folded structures but emphasising a ‘poetic’, design-orientated outlook I explore the potential for a more intuitive, nonlinear approach to highlight hitherto overlooked elements in the design process.

Stankard, Suzanne. "Textile praxis : the case for Malaysian hand-woven songket." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2010. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/435/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was prompted by a concern for the vulnerability of traditional pre-industrial handicrafts, namely the songket textiles of Malaysia. The songket textile has been woven for over two centuries in Southeast Asia, and its materiality represents cultural heritage, tradition, and national identity in Malaysia. Market competition from imported, less expensive and mass-produced songket textile replicas has forced local makers to instigate creative change, as a means of longevity and secure a place in the market. Within this research theories of development and social science are used to direct the creative practice of the researcher, forming a textile praxis. The practice of the researcher, as a textile designer and weaver, will introduce alternative technology, namely yarns and weaving techniques, to the production of the textile in order to instigate change. This practice is conducted within the field in Malaysia and in the London studios of the Royal College of Art. The implementation of the practice reflects the local material, technological, and economic environments, hence, providing alternative yarns and weaving techniques which are ‘appropriate’ (Schumacher 1993) to the local hand-woven production infrastructure. It is the socio-cultural context of the textiles materiality which most challenges the researcher in her practice; the duality (Gell 1998) of the object, subject, and social relationship. Manifesting itself as objectivity, dualism presents an agency upon creative practice. The autonomous practice of the researcher is challenged by the autonomy of material representation. The textiles which were produced by the researcher’s practice consist of radical changes in materiality. Through acquiring local knowledge, they represent creativity, where social objectivity has been considered and also abstracted by the researcher. The textiles exist, not as a new genre of materiality, but as exposure and influence to local makers, demonstrating creativity which can be achieved by expanding upon existing technological frameworks. By experiencing the use of alternative yarns during the researcher’s field practice, local makers have chosen to adopt and appropriate the use of the yarns within their practice and subsequent textile market, a use which they have sustained. The use of exposure to influence the local makers practice has already caused changes in the textiles materiality. The future materiality of the textile depends upon the time and space in which its creative practice and society resides.

Preget, Louise. "The nature of management work." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 1993. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/448/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis contributes to an understanding of the nature of Managerial work, confronting the work in its natural setting. It offers an empirically grounded description of the social organisation of managerial work; it explores the taken for granted features of managers'work that allows members to recognise and reproduce their normal everyday activities amid the variability and complexity that comprises their days work. The study finds managerial work to be a primarily verbal activity; accessible through a study of interaction. Resources of Conversation Analysis are utilised to explore how the managers use talk to accomplish their activities and to expose and test their understanding. An ethnographically informed approach reveals that the social organisation of the work is inextricable from local, referential matters. The thesis is presented in two parts. Part I explorest he 'insitu' accomplishment of a number of activities within selected instances of managerial work; a memo,a discussion of future work plans and a strategic planning meeting. It finds and demonstrates how such work as negotiating a position, identifying a problem reaching agreement is not just the outcome of a sequential organisation but of a retrospective-prospective design. Phenomena such as 'planning' and 'organising' are appropriated at the interactional level. They are found to be achieved in the insitu accomplishment of various conversational features; agreement and modification amongst others, through an understanding of local contingencies such as time scales for projects, the personalities involved, and by practices of description and explanation. Part 2 takes up an interest, begun in Part 1, with occasions when the managers offer explanations of their work. The ability to "talk about management" is found to be a competenc essential to the accomplishment of a number of managerial activities such as working up plans, making sensible a proposal. A number of occasions where particular managers offer verbal 'tours' of their work are explored. Not only doest his reveal something of how accounts get done, but it brings into the public domain some of the 'commonsense understandings' that the managers orientate in shaping up a telling of their work. Attention to these 'espoused logics' 'lines of regard' is important in terms of developing an adequate theory of the organisation of managerial work. It could be on the basis of these' practical theories' that the managers work proceeds that particular decisions get taken, plans are agreed etc.

Jacklin, Rosamond. "Judgment and decision making in surgery." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/4378.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD thesis addresses the question of how we define, measure and improve surgical judgment and decision making, and how junior surgeons may be trained in these skills. The introduction to the thesis outlines the importance of surgical decision making, and the rationale for undertaking this research. An overview of relevant cognitive psychology research is presented, and the methodologies used in the experimental chapters of the thesis are described in detail. The introduction concludes with a systematic review of published empirical work on surgical decision making. The first two empirical studies are qualitative in nature, using interviews and simulation. They address how we define surgical decisions and their relationship to the process of care, including how surgeons subjectively view their own decision making, and whether we can draw inferences from observation of the process in action. Subsequent experimental chapters focus on the measurement of the quality of judgments of risk - a pre-decisional process in which likely outcomes of surgery are evaluated and estimated. Judgment analysis methodology is used to measure surgeons' performance at estimating surgical risks, with evaluation of whether the method shows construct validity, and whether feedback derived from judgment analysis tasks can be used as a teaching tool. The final empirical section of the thesis develops the theme of training junior surgeons in understanding risk and becoming better decision-makers. The process of developing, piloting, implementing and evaluating of a course module aiming to improve surgical trainees' approaches to decision making is presented. Finally the discussion reflects on the strengths and weaknesses of the studies, and outlines the implications of the work for clinical practice, training of junior surgeons, and future research.

Chang, An-Yuan. "An attribute approach to the measurement of manufacturing system flexibility." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4388/.

Full text
Abstract:
An uncertain environment has forced manufacturing systems to have flexibility. Uncertainties involved with internal and external factors means that flexibility becomes an important competitive factor for the firms. However, the concept of manufacturing flexibility has not yet been clearly identified, understood and integrated. These problems have led to researchers and practitioners getting confused and this produces difficulties when trying to implement it. The research in this thesis attempts to clarify and integrate the various aspects of manufacturing flexibility measurement. The objective of the research was to develop theoretical models to quantify the measurement with mathematical mechanisms. A consolidated and synthesized approach, defined as the attribute approach is proposed in this thesis. This leads to a unified framework for flexibility measurement. Vague concepts together with arbitrarily used terminology has led to confusion in concept and contradictions in manufacturing flexibility research. Omissions that appeared in the literature have been identified and remedied in this research. Ten types of flexibility attributes have been proposed and applied to six types of manufacturing flexibility. By exploring of all ten types of flexibility attribute, it has been possible to clarify the confused arguments found in the literature. The main advantage of the attribute approach is its thorough treatment of flexibility measurement. It has provided a conceptually understandable and theoretically precise method of measuring manufacturing flexibility. It also points to new directions for further research in this field. It is hoped that this thesis has pushed forward the frontier of knowledge in this field.

Abstract:
AbstractThe number of refugees across the globe is growing dramatically—a trend predicted to continue due to a global increase in social and political instability as well as socioeconomic conflicts. In places where violence is seen as a necessary factor in achieving peace, ongoing armed conflict, and displacement will likely contribute to continued psychological impairment and suffering among those affected (Morina et al., .Frontiers in Psychiatry 9:433, 2018). Indeed, research overwhelmingly attests to the alarmingly high rates of PTSD among this population (Schouler-Ocak, M., Laban, C. J., Bäärnhielm, S., Kastrup, M. C., Dein, S., & Wintrob, R. (2019). Abstract:
Fuest, C., A. Peichl und S. Abstract:
Aα 16 Arg→His substitutions are common forms of congenital dysfibrinogenemias. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic to moderate hemorrhagic tendencies. Biochemical characterization of one such heterozygotic individual (Fibrinogen Louisville, Galanakis, etal. Ann NY Acad Sci 408:644,1983) indicated that only homodimeric fibrinogen molecules (i.e., containing either normal or abnormal Aα chains) were present. We isolated fibrinogen from the plasma of a 23 year old patient with a history of easy bruising and several recent moderate to severe bleeding episodes. Coagulability with reptilase was 677 (65-70%; n=5) whereas with thrombin (Ha) it approached 100%, depending directly upon the time of incubation with enzyme. HPLC analysis of Ila-induced fibrinopeptide release demonstrated the presence of an abnormal A-peptide (A*), amounting to 50% of the total, which was released more slowly than the normal A-peptide (A). Amino acid analysis of A* demonstrated the absence of Arg and the presence of His. Carboxypeptidase digestion confirmed the structure of A* as Aα 16 Arg-→ His. The clot and the soluble clot liquor resulting from reptilase treatment were separated and each was then further treated with Ilato release A*. HPLC analysis indicated that 31% of the total A* present in the sample was associated with the reptilase clot and 697 remained in the clot liquor. This distribution of A* suggests that Fibrinogen Birmingham, unlike Fibrinogen Louisville, contains heterodimeric molecules that are incorporated into the reptilase clottable fraction. This finding is consistent with a process of random hepatic assembly of dimeric fibrinogen molecules in a heterozygotic individual.

Abstract:
CyA administration isssociated with histological evidenceof vascular injury. Since vascularendothelial cell components are known to modify fibrinolytic activity, we have examined fibrinolytic changes in renal allograft recipients onCyA and, in addition, markers of vascular endothelial cell damage: plasma vWFRiCof activity and AT-III activity.Parameters of fibrinolytic activity have been assessed serially in 21 renal allograft recipients for 1 year post-transplantation by study of the following: euglobulin clot lysis time (ELT), plasminogen activator activity (PAA) by fibrin plate assay, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) by ELISA and fast-acting t-PA inhibitor (t-PAI) by chromogenic assay. From 1 month onwards, fibrinolytic activity (ELTs and fibrin plates) is significantly decreased, p<0.002 and p<0.002 respectively, compared to normal controls, and this decrease persists at oneyear post-transplantation. Mean ELTs (mins) and ranges at 1 and 6 months and 1 year are 363 (120-1740), 598 (135-1610) and 538(80-870) respectively. Mean PAA (% of pooled normal plasma) and ranges at these times are 104 (70-154), 79 (48-118) and 83 (65-108) respectively. In contrast, serial t-PA levels (%of pooled normal plasma) are significantly increased (p<0.02), 428 (86-3686), 297 (81-1130) and 198 ( 44-637 ) at 1 and 6 months and 1 year respectively. These results suggest that the decreased fibrinolytic activity is due to increased levels of t-PA inhibitor, too high to be surpassed by the amount of t-PA released. vWFRiCof activity and AT III activity aresimilarly increased. In conclusion, CyA-treated renal allograft recipients show evidence of chronic vascular endothelial damage and a prothromboticstate.

Abstract:
The analysis of tank nozzles for API Standard 650 [1] tanks is a complex problem. Appendix P of API 650 provides a method for determining the allowable external loads on tank shell openings. The method in Appendix P is based on two papers, one by Billimoria and Hagstrom [2] and the other by Billimoria and Tam [3]. Although Appendix P is optional, industry has used it for a number of years for large diameter tanks. For tanks less than 120 feet (33.6 m) in diameter, Appendix P is not applicable. In previously published papers [4–10], the authors used finite element analysis (FEA) to verify the experimental results reported by Billimoria and Tam for shell nozzles. The analysis showed the variance between stiffness coefficients and stresses obtained by FEA and API 650 methods for tanks. In this follow-up paper, the authors present stiffness coefficients for tank nozzles located away from a structural discontinuity. Factors to establish spring rates for nozzles varying from 6 to 48 inches and tank diameters from 30 feet to 300 feet and for nozzles at different elevations on the shell are provided. Mathematical equations are provided together with graphs for the stiffness coefficient factors.

Abstract:
This paper presents the application of a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes finite element code (NS3D) in the context of turbomachinery rotor-stator multistage interaction. A mixing-plane approach is used, in which boundary conditions at a common interface plane between adjacent blade rows are iteratively adjusted to yield a flow satisfying the continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations, in an average sense. To further improve the solutions, a mesh adaptation technique then redistributes the mesh points of the structured grid within each component, according to an a posteriori error estimate based on the Hessian of the local flow solution. This matrix of second derivatives controls both the magnitude and direction of the required mesh movement at each node, which is then implemented using a spring analogy. The methodology is demonstrated for the second stage compressor of the UTRC large-scale rotating rig at an rpm of 650 and a flow coefficient of 0.51, and for a two-stage compressor of a turboprop engine running at 45,000 rpm. The results compare well to the experimental data and illustrate the potential of the approach.

Abstract:
Several key differentiation events occur within the recognizable MK compartment; however, little is known about the macromolecular changes responsible for these events. In this study, protein synthesis profiles of morphologically immature and mature guinea pig MK populations have been analyzed by twodimensional gel electrophoresis after in vivo labeling with 35S-methionine. MK were enriched by a bovine plasma aggregation enrichment procedure (Blood 69:173, 1987) and then fractionated into immature and mature populations based on differences in their respective buoyant densities (Brit. J. Haematol. 64:33, 1986). With this protocol, immature and mature MK populations were obtained in which MK constituted 95% of the cell mass. Ninety percent of the MK in the immature population had basophilic, immature morphology while ≥90% of those in the mature population had acidophilic, mature staining characteristics after Wright's staining. Protease inhibitors were used throughout the isolation procedure. The cells were solubilized and proteins subjected to two-dimensional electrophoresis according to O'Farrell (J. Biol. Chem. 250:4007, 1975). To examine basic proteins, proteins were electrophoresed in the first dimension under nonequilibrium conditions in a pH gradient as described by O'Farrell et al. (Cell 12:1133, 1977). Analyses of fluorograms revealed both qualitative and quantitative differences in synthesis profiles between these two MK populations. Among acidic proteins whose synthesis was readily detected in immature but not mature MK were ones whose MW and pi were respectively: 120K, 6.4; 7OK, 5.9; 70K, 6.9; 65K, 6.8; 55K, 6.2; 55K, 6.0; 53K, 5.8; 53K, 6.5; 52K, 6.7; 50K, 6.8; 41K, 5.5 and 33K, 6.7. Acidic and neutral proteins prominently synthesized in mature but not immature MK were found at MW and PI of: 110K, 5.7; 110K, 5.8 and 80K, 7.2. Basic proteins prominently synthesized in immature but not mature MK were found at MWs of: 110K; 70K; 52K; 48K; 39K and 18K. Basic proteins actively synthesized by mature but not immature MK had MWs of: 83K; 43K and 17K. These findings demonstrate that differences in protein synthesis patterns can be readily detected between immature and mature MK and provide baseline data with which to explore the role of these proteins in MK differentiation

Abstract:
We report on the results of a controlled, blinded, U.S. multicenter trial in theprophylaxis of postoperative DVT in total hip replacement patients. One hundred and forty-eight (148) patients were enrolled in this evaluation of two parallel treatment groups: (1) dihydroergotamine 0.5 mg with heparin 5000 units(DHE/5000),or (2) matching placebo. Treatment was administered subcutaneously preoperatively and continued three times a day (Q8h)for at least seven days. One hundred andtwenty-eight (128) of these were valid protocol compilers.Daily radiofibrinogen leg scans performed for the duration of treatment were followed by venographic evaluation on postoperative Day 7 or when the RFUT indicated a sustained positive reading for 48 hours. In 12 patients venography was not performed and these patients are not included in the efficacy analysis, as were eight other protocol violators. The venographically confirmed positive DVT rates for the consultant's review (protocol compilers) were 25% (16/63) for DHE/5000 and 52% (32/65) for placebo, a statistically significant difference in effective prevention of DVT (p=0.0021, two tailed Fisher's exact test)The incidence of proximal thrombi (popliteal and above) was reduced from 18.5% (12/65 patients) in the placebo group to 4.8% (3/63patients) in the group treated with DHE/Heparin (p=0.0255), while the incidence of extensive thrombi (<25% occlusion) was reduced from 24.6% (16/65 patients) to9.5% (6/63 patients) in the respective groups (p=0.0399).The most common side effect was injection site hematoma occurring in seven of the DHE/5000 patients and two of the placebo patients. One DHE/5000 patient discontinued treatment due to a side effect (injection site hematoma) attributable to drug and three placebo patients discontinued treatment due to side effects (two of these had confirmed pulmonary embolism). These data confirm previous investigations supporting the efficacy and safetyof DHE/5000 for the prevention of postoperative DVT in patients undergoing totalhip replacement.

Abstract:
The Deccan Volcanic Province of India is considered as one of the largest basalts-covered regions in the world, formed due to extensive outpouring of basaltic lavas during Deccan volcanism (∼65 Ma). The sedimentary sequence below the flood basalt is mainly characterized by Mesozoic strata with a varying thickness of 1000 m to 2500 m. It is considered that requisite heat generation due to Deccan Trap volcanism soon after the Cretaceous sedimentation may have acted as a catalyst in hydrocarbon potential in this area (Vardhan et al. 2008). However, it is essentially unexplored because of the limitations of conventional marine streamer P-wave seismic acquisition in imaging the structures both intra-basalt and sub-basalt. The major challenges can be considered as follows: Strong reflections due to high impedance contrasts at the top (and bottom) of the basalts leading to significant loss of transmitted seismic energy; Scattering of energy due to large acoustic impedance contrast at top and bottom of the basalt; Generation of multiples, both surface-related and interbed, from the top and bottom of the basalt, and intra-basalt boundaries, masking genuine primary reflections at the pre-basasediments; Significant attenuation of seismic energy in the basaltic sequences due to its complex internal structure generally causing weak sub-basasignal; Low signal-to-noise ratio creating ambiguity in estimating accurate velocity model of subsurface. This case study demonstrates that, even with legacy marine streamer surveys, an appropriate workflow of combining suitable advanced technologies can help to overcome the long-standing challenges of sub-basalt imaging. The reprocessed data show clear uplift in the sub-basalt imaging and the inversion results validate the quality of the new data in relation to the well logs.

Abstract:
Objective. To evaluate the benefits and harms of selected interventional procedures for acute and chronic pain that are not currently covered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) but are relevant for and have potential utility for use in the Medicare population, or that are covered by CMS but for which there is important uncertainty or controversy regarding use. Data sources. Electronic databases (Ovid® MEDLINE®, PsycINFO®, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) to April 12, 2021, reference lists, and submissions in response to a Federal Register notice. Review methods. Using predefined criteria and dual review, we selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for 10 interventional procedures and conditions that evaluated pain, function, health status, quality of life, medication use, and harms. Random effects meta-analysis was conducted for vertebral compression fracture; otherwise, outcomes were synthesized qualitatively. Effects were classified as small, moderate, or large using previously defined criteria. Results. Thirty-seven randomized trials (in 48 publications) were included. Vertebroplasty (13 trials) is probably more effective at reducing pain and improving function in older (>65 years of age) patients, but benefits are small (less than 1 point on a 10-point pain scale). Benefits appear smaller (but still present) in sham-controlled (5 trials) compared with usual care controlled trials (8 trials) and larger in trials of patients with more acute symptoms; however, testing for subgroup effects was limited by imprecision. Vertebroplasty is probably not associated with increased risk of incident vertebral fracture (10 trials). Kyphoplasty (2 trials) is probably more effective than usual care for pain and function in older patients with vertebral compression fracture at up to 1 month (moderate to large benefits) and may be more effective at >1 month to ≥1 year (small to moderate benefits) but has not been compared against sham therapy. Evidence on kyphoplasty and risk of incident fracture was conflicting. In younger (below age for Medicare eligibility) populations, cooled radiofrequency denervation for sacroiliac pain (2 trials) is probably more effective for pain and function versus sham at 1 and 3 months (moderate to large benefits). Cooled radiofrequency for presumed facet joint pain may be similarly effective versus conventional radiofrequency, and piriformis injection with corticosteroid for piriformis syndrome may be more effective than sham injection for pain. For the other interventional procedures and conditions addressed, evidence was too limited to determine benefits and harms. Conclusions. Vertebroplasty is probably effective at reducing pain and improving function in older patients with vertebral compression fractures; benefits are small but similar to other therapies recommended for pain. Evidence was too limited to separate effects of control type and symptom acuity on effectiveness of vertebroplasty. Kyphoplasty has not been compared against sham but is probably more effective than usual care for vertebral compression fractures in older patients. In younger populations, cooled radiofrequency denervation is probably more effective than sham for sacroiliac pain. Research is needed to determine the benefits and harms of the other interventional procedures and conditions addressed in this review.
