Abstract:

"Design and implementation of a closed-loop blood glucose control system in patients with type 1 diabetes." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Girona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/125007.

Full text
Abstract:
In the work presented in this dissertation, open-loop and closed-loop control strategies that were aimed at resolving major glucose control problems in the postprandial period were developed. A new model-based control algorithm for postprandial glucose regulation in open-loop, which is based on set-inversion technology, was developed. It automatically and efficiently coordinates the values of basal-bolus insulin to achieve certain predefined control objectives. The algorithm was designed to enable integration into existing smart insulin pumps. Closed-loop control strategies based on sliding mode techniques and insulin-on-board constraints were implemented to reduce the risk of late hypoglycaemic events and to obtain safer controller performance without increasing the period of hyperglycaemia. Extensive evaluation and validation of the control robustness was performed in a comprehensive virtual environment that was specifically designed and implemented to facilitate realistic simulations. A practical methodology to “virtualise” a cohort of real Type 1 diabetic patients was also developed

Abstract:
In Japan, on January 1, 2006, “Ordinance of the Ministry for Establishing Technical Standards of Nuclear Power Generation Systems” (so called Ordinance No.62) was revised. The revised Ordinance No. 62 provides only functional requirements or performance requirement for nuclear power facilities, and detailed specifications — such as the detailed requirement of material and structure for a pressure vessel — are used to endorse consensus codes, like the Codes of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME). To endorse consensus codes, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), the regulatory body, and the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES), a technical support organization, have done technical evaluations on several of the required consensus codes, and these results have been provided in the Regulatory Guide of Ordinance No.62. The activities of technical evaluation of the consensus codes were reported at the ICONE14th. This paper shows their subsequent situation, and the activities of proposing new codes that are not yet in the Societies’ code.

Abstract:
Comprehensive reformation of the regulatory system has been introduced in Japan in order to apply recent technical progress in a timely manner. “The Technical Standards for Nuclear Power Generation Equipments”, known as the Ordinance No.622) of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, which is used for detailed design, construction and operating stage of Nuclear Power Plants, was being modified to performance specifications with the consensus codes and standards being used as prescriptive specifications, in order to facilitate prompt review of the Ordinance with response to technological innovation. The activities on modification were performed by the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), the regulatory body in Japan, with support of the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES), a technical support organization. The revised Ordinance No.62 was issued on July 1, 2005 and is enforced from January 1 2006. During the period from the issuance to the enforcement, JNES carried out to prepare enforceable regulatory guide which complies with each provisions of the Ordinance No.62, and also made technical assessment to endorse the applicability of consensus codes and standards, in response to NISA’s request. Some consensus codes and standards were re-assessed since they were already used in regulatory review of the construction plan submitted by licensee. Other consensus codes and standards were newly assessed for endorsement. In case that proper consensus code or standards were not prepared, details of regulatory requirements were described in the regulatory guide as immediate measures. At the same time, appropriate standards developing bodies were requested to prepare those consensus code or standards. Supplementary note which provides background information on the modification, applicable examples etc. was prepared for convenience to the users of the Ordinance No. 62. This paper shows the activities on modification and the results, following the NISA’s presentation at ICONE-13 that introduced the framework of the performance specifications and the modification process of the Ordinance NO. 62.

Abstract:
The fast acting specific plasminogen activator inhibitor PAI-1 produced in endothelial cells and present in plasma and thrombocytes is known also to be released from certain tumour cell lines. The specific plasminogen activator inhibitor PAI-2 of placental type and present in pregnancy plasma is also released from a histocytoma cell line.We examined ascitic fluid for the presence of PAI-1 and PAI-2 in five patients with advanced ovarian carcinoma. The antigen levels of PAI-1 and PAI-2 were assayed with sandwich ELISAs using a combination of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies and the activity of PAI-1 was in addition measured by an activity assay (BioPool). The antigen level of PAI-1 ranged between 110 and 800 ug/1 (mean 315 μg/1) and the activity between 5 and 16 U/ml (mean 12 U/ml). Antigen levels of PAI-2 ranged from 10 to 62 ug/1 (mean 30 μg/ml), i.e. approximately 35 (12-72) % of the concentration of PAI-2 in term plasma. In blood samples obtained from three of the patients during surgery from veins draining the tumors, the concentration of PAI-2 was 0, 7 and 12 μg/1, respectively. PAI-2 could not be detected in the peripheral blood.

62 patients were at random blindly given either Kabi 2165 or commercial heparin for 6 days in prophylaxis of post-operative DVT after abdominal surgery. The radiofibrinogen uptake test (FRUT) was performed every two days during 6 days. D. Dimers quantification was performed with an enzyme—linked immunosorbent assay using monoclonal antibodies : ELISA (Diagnostics Stago). D. Dimers quantification allowed us to share out patients amongst two groups :1) Mild abdominal surgery,2) Oncologic surgery. In both groups, no difference was observed according to the treatment (p> 0.5) We saw a significant rise of D. Dimers from D-l to D6 (p< 10-6) in both groups, with significantly upper values in group 2 (p< 0.01).Among 62 patients, 3 had positive RFUT. There was no significant difference between D. Dimers values of these 3 patients and D. Dimers values of the 59 patients with negative RFUT.Thus, the rise of D. Dimers during post—operative period was not associated with DVT in these 59 patients.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the results of the effective application of the method of spatial visualization of the flow around models in industrial ADT T - 128, combined with standard weight tests. Visualization of flow over the model was performed by varying humidity and temperature of the flow in test section. The results of a consistent standard weight experiment and a physical study of the characteristics of the flow around an aerodynamic model in an industrial ADT T - 128 are presented. In standard weight tests using video methods, the complex flow structure arising from the flow around an aerodynamic model at subsonic and transonic speeds is investigated. The results of balance measurements with simultaneous application of the method of spatial flow visualization around model in industrial T - 128 wind tunnel allowed to obtain physical information on the flow structure - a shock-waves, flow separation, wing vibration and deformation, the onset of asymmetric vortices. This greatly allows to expand the information content of experimental studies, to increase their reliability and to give a correct interpretation of the results obtained.

Kanner, Joseph, Dennis Miller, Ido Bartov, John Kinsella, and Stella Harel. The Effect of Dietary Iron Level on Lipid Peroxidation of Muscle Food. United States Department of Agriculture, January 1995. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1995.7604282.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Biological oxidations are almost exclusively metal ion-promoted reactions and in ths respect iron, being the most abundant, is the commonly involved. The effect of dietary iron levels on pork, turkey and chick muscle lipid peroxidation and various other related compounds were evaluated. Crossbred feeder pigs were fed to market weight on corn-soy rations containing either 62, 131 or 209 ppm iron. After slaughter, the muscles were dissected, cooked and stored at 4°C. Heavily fortifying swine rations with iron (>200 ppm) increase nn-heme iron (NHI), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and decrease a-tocopherol in cooked stored pork but did not increase warmed-over aroma (WOA). NHI and TBARS were higher in cooked pork from pigs fed high-iron diets. Liver iron correlated with muscle iron. TBARS were strongly related with WOA. The role of dietary vitamin E and ascorbic acid on Fe-induced in vivo lipid peroxidation in swine was also evaluated. Moderate elevation in iron stores had a marked effect on oxidative stress, especially as indicated by liver TBARS. Supplemental vitamin E, and to a lesser extent vitamin C, protect against this oxidative stress. Unsupplementation of Fe in the regular diet of turkeys did not affect body weight, blood hemoglobin level, or iron pool in the liver or muscle. The reason being that it contained "natural" ~120 mg Fe/kg feed, and this amount is high enough to keep constant the pool of iron in the body, liver or muscle tissues. Only Fe-supplementation with high amounts of Fe (500 ppm) significantly increased turkey blood hemoglobin and total iron in the liver, in 1 out of 3 experiments, but only slightly affects iron pool in the muscles. It seems that the liver accumulates very high concentations of iron and significantly regulates iron concentration in skeletal muscles. For this reason, it was very difficult to decrease muscle stability in turkeys through a diet containing high levels of Fe-supplementation. It was shown that the significant increase in the amount of iron (total and "free") in the muscle by injections with Fe-dextran accelerated its lipid peroxidation rate and decreased its a-tocopherol concentration. The level and metabolism of iron in the muscles affects the intensity of in vivo lipid peroxidation. This process was found to ifluence the turnover and accumulation of a-tocopherol in turkey and chick muscles. Treatments which could significantly decrease the amount and metabolism of iron pool in muscle tissues (or other organs) may affect the rate of lipid peroxidation and the turnover of a-tocopherol. Several defense enzymes were determined and found in the turkey muscle, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase was more active in muscles with a high trend of lipid peroxidation, lmore so in drumsticks than in breast muscles, or muscles with a low a-tocopherol content. The activity of glutathione peroxidase increased several fold in muscle stored at 4°C. Our work demonstrated that it will be much more practical to increase the stability of muscle tissues in swine, turkeys and chickens during storage and processing by increasing the amount of vitamin E in the diet than by withdrawing iron supplementation.

Energy Expenditure for Activity in Free Ranging Ruminants: A Nutritional Frontier. United States Department of Agriculture, June 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2009.7696529.bard.

Abstract:
Heat production (HP) or energy expenditure for activity (EEa) is of fundamental nutritional importance for livestock because it determines the proportion of ingested nutrients available for productive functions. Previous estimates of EEa are unreliable and vary widely with different indirect methodologies. This leads to erroneous nutritional strategies, especially when intake on pasture does not meet nutritional requirements and supplementation is necessary for acceptable production. Therefore, the objective of this project was to measure EEa in different classes of livestock (beef cattle and goats) over a wide range of ecological and management conditions to develop and evaluate simple means of prediction. In the first study in Israel, small frame (SF) and large frame (LF) cows (268 and 581 kg) were monitored during spring, summer, and autumn. Feed intake by SF cows per unit of metabolic weight was greater (P < 0.001) than that by LF cows in both spring and summer and their apparent selection of higher quality herbage in spring was greater (P < 0.10) than that of LF cows. SF cows grazed more hours per day and walked longer distances than the LF cows during all seasons. The coefficient of specific costs of activities (kJ•kg BW-0.75•d-1) and of locomotion (J•kg BW-0.75•m-1) were smaller for the SF cows. In the second study, cows were monitored in March, May, and September when they grazed relatively large plots, 135 and 78 ha. Energy cost coefficients of standing, grazing, and horizontal locomotion derived were similar to those of the previous study based on data from smaller plots. However, the energy costs of walking idle and of vertical locomotion were greater than those found by Brosh et al. (2006) but similar to those found by Aharoni et al. (2009). In the third study, cows were monitored in February and May in a 78-ha plot with an average slope of 15.5°, whereas average plot slopes of the former studies ranged between 4.3 and 6.9°. Energy cost coefficients of standing, grazing, and walking idle were greater than those calculated in the previous studies. However, the estimated energy costs of locomotion were lower in the steeper plot. A comparison on a similar HP basis, i.e., similar metabolizable energy (ME) intake, shows that the daily energy spent on activities in relation to daily HP increased by 27% as the average plot slope increased from 5.8 and 6.02 to 15.5°. In the fourth study, cows grazing in a woodland habitat were monitored as in previous studies in December, March, and July. Data analysis is in progress. In the first US experiment, Boer and Spanish does with two kids were used in an experiment beginning in late spring at an average of 24 days after kidding. Two does of each breed resided in eight 0.5-ha grass/forb pastures. Periods of 56, 60, 63, 64, and 73 days in length corresponded to mid-lactation, early post-weaning, the late dry period, early gestation, and mid-gestation. EEa expressed as a percentage of the ME requirement for maintenance plus activity in confinement (EEa%) was not influenced by stocking rate, breed, or period, averaging 49%. Behavioral activities (e.g., time spent grazing, walking, and idle, distance traveled) were not highly related to EEa%, although no-intercept regressions against time spent grazing/eating and grazing/eating plus walking indicated an increase in EEa% of 5.8 and 5.1%/h, respectively. In the second study, animal types were yearling Angora doeling goats, yearling Boer wether goats, yearling Spanish wether goats, and Rambouilletwether sheep slightly more than 2 yr of age. Two animals of each type were randomly allocated to one of four pastures 9.3, 12.3, 4.6, and 1.2 ha in area. The experiment was conducted in the summer with three periods, 30, 26, and 26 days in length. EEa% was affected by an interaction between animal type and period (Angora: 16, 17, and 15; Boer: 60, 67, and 34; Spanish: 46, 62, and 42; sheep: 22, 12, and 22% in periods 1, 2, and 3, respectively (SE = 6.1)). EEa% of goats was predicted with moderate accuracy (R2 = 0.40-0.41) and without bias from estimates of 5.8 and 5.1%/h spent grazing/eating and grazing/eating plus walking, respectively, determined in the first experiment; however, these methods were not suitable for sheep. These methods of prediction are simpler and more accurate than currently recommended for goats by the National Research Council.
