Abstract:
Tyrosinase inhibitors improve skin whitening by inhibiting the formation of melanin precursors in the skin. The inhibitory activity of seven phlorotannins (1–7), triphlorethol A (1), eckol (2), 2-phloroeckol (3), phlorofucofuroeckol A (4), 2-O-(2,4,6-trihydroxyphenyl)-6,6′-bieckol (5), 6,8′-bieckol (6), and 8,8′-bieckol (7), from Ecklonia cava was tested against tyrosinase, which converts tyrosine into dihydroxyphenylalanine. Compounds 3 and 5 had IC50 values of 7.0 ± 0.2 and 8.8 ± 0.1 μM, respectively, in competitive mode, with Ki values of 8.2 ± 1.1 and 5.8 ± 0.8 μM. Both compounds showed the characteristics of slow-binding inhibitors over the time course of the enzyme reaction. Compound 3 had a single-step binding mechanism and compound 5 a two-step-binding mechanism. With stable AutoDock scores of −6.59 and −6.68 kcal/mol, respectively, compounds 3 and 5 both interacted with His85 and Asn260 at the active site.

Abstract:
The paleo-megathrust earthquake occurred in Siberut, West Sumatra in 1797 and it was estimated to have a magnitude (Mw) of about 8.2–8.8. This earthquake triggered a tsunami in the West Sumatra coast and its vicinity. The seismograph was not installed yet at that time, therefore it didn’t has earthquake parameter for advanced analysis. This study hoped to be able to see the earthquake potential impact if the earthquake occurred in this present era. Hereinafter using the scaling law relations of earthquake kinematic model in processing. The result is maximum intensity in Siberut and Tanahbala islands about VII-IX MMI, Painan, Padang, and Pariaman cities about V-VII MMI, and the northern part of West Sumatra region about VI-VII MMI. The PGA in Siberut and Tanahbala is about 60 % g, and Painan, Padang, and Pariaman are about 20 % g or more. Then the value of PGV in Siberut and Tanahbala is about 60 cm/s, in Painan about 10-20 cm/s, and in Padang and Pariaman city about 20-30 cm/s. Furthermore, an estimation of the return period of the earthquake if the source mechanism was modelled as a thrust and strike-slip faults for Mw 8.2-8.8 about 185 until 235 years and 336 until 616 years respectively.

Abstract:
Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves of two Nigerian species were analyzed for their constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The leaf oil of Ficus benjamina L. (Moraceae), collected during the day, contained high contents of α-pinene (13.9%), abietadiene (9.7%), cis-α-bisabolene (8.2%) and germacrene-D-4-ol (8.4%), while the night sample was dominated by germacrene-D-4-ol (31.5%), 1,10-di- epi-cubenol (8.8%) and hexahydrofarnesylacetone (8.3%). This could be a possible indication of differences in emissions of volatiles by F. benjamina during the day and night. The main compounds of Irvingia barteri Hook. f. (Irvingiaceae) were β-caryophyllene (17.0%), (E)-α-ionone (10.0%), geranial (7.6%), (E)-β-ionone (6.6%) and β-gurjunene (5.1%).

Abstract:
Cytochrome c protein and mRNA are 300 and 100% higher, respectively, in the soleus muscle (predominantly slow-twitch oxidative) than the white vastus lateralis (predominately fast-twitch glycolytic) muscle (W. W. Winder, K. M. Baldwin, and J. O. Holloszy. Eur. J. Biochem. 47: 461–467, 1974; M. M. Lai and F. W. Booth. J. Appl. Physiol. 69: 843–848, 1990). However, the mechanisms controlling these differences in cytochrome c mRNA are largely unknown. The present study employed direct plasmid injection techniques to determine whether the proximal promoter (−726 to +610) of the rat somatic cytochrome c gene was more active in the soleus than in white vastus lateralis muscles in rats. No difference between the soleus and white vastus lateralis muscles for the activities of the −726, −631, −489, −326, −215, −159 and −149 cytochrome c promoters was noted. The results of this study suggest that additional elements (outside of −726 to +610) in the cytochrome c gene may be required, or posttranscriptional regulation may account, for the higher cytochrome c mRNA in the slow-twitch oxidative muscle.

Abstract:
Abstract The initially approved dosage regimens of 840 mg every 2 weeks, 1200 mg every 3 weeks, and 1680 mg every 4 weeks are considered excessive concerning the specified minimum effective concentration of 6 ug/mL and the significant exposure-response relationship with Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI). Our previous research, demonstrated through simulation, indicated that an extended-interval dosing regimen (840 mg every 6 weeks) after two standard loading doses maintained efficacy with a nonsignificant exposure-response relationship with AESI.In alignment with the FDA's initiative "Project Optimus," which aims to optimize drug dosing for improved therapeutic outcomes, we explore alternative dosage regimens for atezolizumab. Through a comparison of the traditional 30-year-old industry standard NONMEM software and the recently developed PumasAI software, we simulate these regimens, utilizing our previously published article as a benchmark. Given the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, it is crucial for pharmacokinetic modeling to adapt and leverage these advancements. We anticipate that this paper will contribute to the integration of AI and machine learning software in pharmacokinetic analysis, aligning with the goals of "Project Optimus" to ensure that drug concentrations are optimized for efficacy and safety. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Patients at extremes of age may be particularly vulnerable to poor physical and mental health after treatment for breast cancer; we examined factors associated with poor health in older breast cancer survivors. Methods: The Mayo Clinic Breast Disease Registry (MCBDR) is a prospective longitudinal cohort study that enrolls Mayo Clinic Rochester patients diagnosed with stage 0-4 breast cancer (BC). In 2020, we mailed a survey to 1,273 MCBDR participants aged 77+. Three PROMIS-10 items were used to assess overall health, mental health, and physical function. Self-reported comorbidities were also collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify significant (p<0.05) predictors of overall health, mental health, and physical function. Independent variables included demographics, clinical characteristics, and comorbidities. Results: 848/1273 MCBDR participants (67%) responded, 842 reporting their overall health. Median age at survey return was 82 years (range 77-100), and the median time since cancer diagnosis was 12 years. Excellent or very good overall health, mental health, and physical function were reported by 48%, 63.5%, and 77.1%, respectively. Older age was associated with poorer self-reported overall health, as were heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease, reported by 18%, 14%, and 7%, respectively (p<0.05 for all; see Table). Only heart disease was statistically significantly associated with poorer mental health (p=0.03). Physical function was reportedly better in survivors without a history of diabetes, stroke, or lung disease (p<0.05 for all), and in those who were closer to their cancer diagnosis (p=0.03). Tumor characteristics were not associated with overall health, mental health, or physical function. Conclusions: Comorbidities are common and impact self-reported overall health, mental health, and physical function in older breast cancer survivors. Lau, Beng Guey. "An intelligent prosthetic hand using hybrid actuation and myoelectric control." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2009. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/852/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis details the design and development of an intelligent prosthetic hand based on hybrid DC and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuation and controlled by only two myoelectric sensors. A prosthesis as a tool makes no pretence of trying to replace the lost limb physiologically but it works as an aid to help provide some of the lost functions and is an interchangeable device worn and used as needed. Much research has been carried out to develop artificial prosthetic hands with capabilities similar to the human hand. The human hand is a very complex grasping tool, that can handle objects of different size, weight and shape; however, they are far from providing its manipulation capabilities. This is for many different reasons, such as active bending is limited to two or three joints and user-unfriendliness. These limitations are present in commercial prosthetic hands, together with others always complained about by patients and amputees, such as inability to provide enough grasping functionality and heavy weight. Several robotic and anthropomorphic hands may have sufficient active degrees of freedom to allow dexterity comparable to that of the human hand. Unfortunately, they cannot be used as prostheses due to their physical characteristic that poses several serious limitations on human-hand interaction. Hence, the motivation for this research is to investigate the use of a hybrid actuation mechanism in the design and development of an intelligent prosthetic hand. This work highlights user-friendliness and involves a proper mechanical design with more active degrees of freedom and incorporating an intelligent control system. A system with a finger prototype is considered. Testing through simulation and physical models reveals a number of limitations. A hybrid actuation system, to increase the finger active degrees of freedom is therefore developed, with a mechanism consisting of DC and SMA actuators. Besides, only two myoelectrodes channels (enhancing the user-friendliness of the device) are used for the system control input signal. Two novel features are developed in the new prosthetic hand. Firstly, its hybrid actuation mechanism has the advantage of increasing the active degrees of freedom; secondly, using only two myoelectric sensors has potential for controlling more than three patterns of fingers movements. By using artificial neural network patterns classification technique, three and five patterns of wrist joint movement corresponding to finger movement can be recognised as more than 85% correct and furthermore, seven as 70% correct.

Chandu, Vijith Cholakkal Parambil. "Investigation of novel methods to remove the cyanotoxin, Cylindrospermopsin, from drinking water." Thesis, Robert Gordon University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10059/852.

Abstract:
The widespread distribution of cyanobacteria and their toxic effects on humans has become a major concern for researchers. Cyanobacteria are a group of oxygenic phototrophic bacteria that exhibit an enormous diversity in shapes and arrangements and occupy widespread habitats that include brackish, marine and fresh water. The major concern among these organisms is not so much the cyanobacteria themselves but their toxin production. Under suitable circumstances, cyanobacteria can reach high biomass levels and form toxic algal blooms. These toxins, known as cyanotoxins, are produced as secondary metabolites by several cyanobacterial species. Cyanotoxins affect not only aquatic ecosystems but also impact on human health. The current work focuses on the cyanotoxin cylindrospermopsin that was originally known to be produced by the cyanobacterium species Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii but has since been identified in a number of other cyanobacterial species. Cylindrospermopsin is hepatotoxic and acts as a strong inhibitor of protein synthesis. The increasing occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms is of major concern, particularly within drinking water supply systems. Therefore, the investigation of more effective water treatment technologies is of great importance in order to ensure the removal of these potent toxins. There are many techniques that have been used so far, but the need to use an effective and efficient method to remove the toxicity is paramount. Removal of the toxin by the use of microbial degradation has been evaluated. Experiments with different strains of bacterial isolates showed positive signs in the removal of toxin by Biolog MT2 assay. In addition to that shake flask culture experiments were carried out and did not show any significant removal of the toxin. Studies with natural water sources showed some pronounced effect on the removal of CYN. The use of TiO2 photocatalysis as another potential water treatment strategy was also evaluated. Current study successfully demonstrated the potential degradation of purified cylindrospermopsin using the titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis treatment method. TiO2 photocatalysis was performed by using a powder form (Degussa P25) catalyst effectively removing the toxin; however, the powder is difficult to remove from the treated water. TiO2 pellets (Hombikat K01/C) were found to be slower in degradation although they allowed for an easier adaption to a continuous treatment system. As an alternative Photospheres™ (buoyant glass beads coated in TiO2) was evaluated and showed the same efficacy as that of Degussa P 25. Studies were extended to investigate the application of UV-LEDs in the photocatalysis reaction to show better efficiency.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses the political history of the Assyrian Empire from its initial expansion under Shalmaneser III (858–824 bc) to its final collapse in 612 bc at the hands of the Babylonians and Medes. It traces the development of the empire through several phases: a supposedly “feudal” phase (ca. 830–745 bc), in which expansion slowed and then reversed; a formative era (744–705 bc), which saw renewed expansion and administrative reform under Tiglath-pileser III and Sargon II; and finally an era of unchallenged hegemony (704–652 bc) encompassing the reigns of Sennacherib, Esarhaddon, and the early reign of Ashurbanipal. The war between Ashurbanipal and his brother Šamaš-šumu-ukin of Babylon (652–648 bc) is considered a pivotal event of the seventh century bc which contributed to the empire’s eventual collapse.

Abstract:
Abstract The implementation of Directive 2004/25/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of April 21, 2004, on takeover bids (the Takeover Directive or the Directive) in Denmark took place in two steps. The Directive was implemented in part by making amendments to the Danish Public Companies Act (aktieselskabsloven), the Danish Financial Statements Act (årsregnskabsloven) and the Danish Securities Trading Act (værdipapirhandelsloven), by Act no. 604 of June 24, 2005 and by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority’s (FSA) issuance of an amended Executive Order on Takeover Bids no. 618 of June 23, 2005. About a year later, the Directive was finally implemented by issuing an amended Executive Order on Takeover Bids no. 416 of May 8, 2006, which included the remaining provisions of the Directive. Since the implementation, the Danish takeover regulation has been amended and the current regulation may now be found in the Danish Public Companies Act (consolidated Act no. 649 of 2006), the Danish Financial Statements Act (consolidated Act no. 376 of 2008), the Danish Securities Trading Act (consolidated Act no. 848 of 2008) and the Executive Order on Takeover bids (Executive Order no. 947 of 2008).

Abstract:
Fundamento.

Abstract:
The failure of fibrinolytic therapy to restore physiologic myocardial perfusion in upward of 40% of patients supports the development of strategies to improve response rates to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in those requiring early procedures. The construct of facilitated PCI (pharmacoinvasive therapy) provides a platform for utilizing the strengths of existing therapies and treatment modalities. The Heparin in Early Patency (HEAP) trial (Zijlstra et al., 2002) included 1,702 patients treated with primary PCI for myocardial infarction (MI); 860 patients received aspirin (500 mg IV) and UFH (≥5,000 U IV) before being transported to the hospital and 842 patients received the same antithrombotic therapy in the hospital. TIMI 2 or 3 flow rates were higher in the pretreated group (31% vs. 20%; p = .001), and patients with TIMI 2 or 3 flow initially had a higher PCI success rate (94% vs. 89%; p <.001) and a lower 30-day mortality (1.6% vs. 3.4%; p = .04). The Plasminogen Activator Angioplasty Compatibility Trial (PACT) randomized 606 patients to receive a 50-mg bolus of alteplase or placebo, followed by immediate angiography and angioplasty if needed (Ross et al., 1999). TIMI flow rates on arrival to the catheterization laboratory were 33% and 15%, respectively. Facilitated PCI and primary PCI restored TIMI 3 flow in occluded vessels equally (77% and 79%, respectively). There were no differences in major bleeding. Left ventricular ejection fraction was highest in those with TIMI 3 flow on arrival to the catheterization laboratory or following PCI within 1 hour of alteplase administration. Full-dose fibrinolytic therapy with alteplase or reteplase followed by coronary angiography and PCI (if no clinical evidence of reperfusion) was evaluated retrospectively in the Global Use of Strategies to Open Occluded Arteries (GUSTO) III trial (Miller et al., 1999). Among those undergoing PCI (n = 392), 87 patients received in-laboratory abciximab. A trend toward reduced mortality was observed in abciximab-treated patients, but at a higher cost of hemorrhagic complications. In the Strategies for Patency Enhancement in the Emergency Department (SPEED) trial (Herrmann et al., 2000), 323 patients who underwent PCI had an 88% procedural success rate and a 30-day composite of death, reinfarction, or revascularization of 5.6%.

Abstract:
Computational thermodynamics approach was used to predict the ranges of the lower ferrite-austenite transformation temperatures, A1’s, in three 9% Cr steels. The predicted A1 ranges were: 766–856°C for SA387 Grade 91, 775–863°C for SA213 Grade T92, and 676–862°C for the weld metal SFA-5.23 B9 (2004). For Grade 91 and Grade T92 using the highest tempering temperature permitted by ASME Code, 800°C, would permit certain alloys conforming to the chemical composition specification to be tempered above their A1, thereby risking the formation of untempered martensite. Similar circumstances exist for weld metal conforming to the SFA-5.23 B9 specification. Linear regression analyses were performed to develop simplified expressions capable of representing the thermodynamically predicted relationships between chemical compositions and A1’s. These are, Grade 91/SFA-5.23 B9 (2004): 805°C + 2.5(%Cr) + 18.1(%Mo) + 19.1(%Si) + 37.1(%V) + 19.2(%Nb) − 63.7(%C) − 130.6(%N) − 60.5(%Mn) − 72.3(%Ni); Grade T92: 778°C + 4.9(%Cr) + 22.6(%Mo) + 10.8(%W) + 22.9(%Si) + 43.6(%V) + 20.2(%Nb) − 80.6(%C) − 150.7(%N) − 55.1(%Mn) − 68.0(%Ni).

Abstract:
The waste management sector as one of the most significant economic sectors requires effective management not only in Latvia but in the European Union as whole. According to the recent (2020) available Eurostat data, 505 kg of municipal waste per capita were generated in the EU of which 48% were recycled and 22% were landfilled. Latvia ranges in the 11th position among the EU Member States with 478 kg of generated waste per capita. Romania (287 kg), Poland (346 kg) and Hungary (364 kg) are countries having generated the lowest amounts of municipal waste per capita, while Denmark (845 kg) and Luxembourg (790 kg) have been the top countries with the highest amounts of generated municipal waste per capita in 2020. In Latvia, approximately 66% of generated waste were recycled and 19% were landfilled in 2020. Moving towards the green economy and following the EU Directive 2018/851 targets for recycling municipal waste the governments develop investment plans envisaging financial resources for the waste management sector. The research aim is to evaluate environmental protection expenditure in the context of waste management policy. The research employs statistical data analysis to study the problem elements and synthesise coherencies or formulate regularities. The research period covers the years from 2010 to 2020. Starting from 2018, Latvia has essentially increased amounts of total investment and current expenditure for waste collection and treatment. In 2020, investments have increased 3.9 times compared with 2018; thus, amounting to EUR 36 295 thousand, while the current expenditure has grown by 21.9% amounting to EUR 118 182 thousand. The proportion of investment in waste management has also essentially increased, i.e. from 19.50% in 2010 to 49.96% in 2020, while the respective growth for current expenditure has been more moderate, i.e. from 32.79% to 62.42% of total financial resources for environmental protection.

Abstract:
While cannabis is the most commonly used illicit substance, few studies have focused on the relationship between sociodemographic factors and primary method or form of cannabis use. The primary aims of this study were to understand the effects of age and sex on primary form (marijuana, concentrates, edibles) and method (joints, blunts, hand pipe, bong, hookah, vaporizer, edibles) of cannabis use. Participants (n=852; n=536 male) completed an online survey that included the ‘Daily Sessions, Frequency, Age of Onset, and Quantity of Cannabis Use Inventory’ used to collect information on the primary method and form of cannabis use in male and female participants divided into young adults ages 18 to 25 (Y) and adults 26 and older (O). Chi square analysis showed a significant effect of sex for primary method (χ2 (1)=122.4, p<.001) and primary form (χ2 (1)=24.6, p<.001) of cannabis use. Post hoc comparisons using Bonferroni corrections (adjusted p=0.002) showed that males were significantly more likely to report blunts (M=35%; F=10%), while females were significantly more likely to report joints (F=16%; M=8%) and edibles (F=15%; M=4%) as their primary method of cannabis use. Males were also significantly more likely to report marijuana (M=66%; F=55%), while females were significantly more likely to endorse edibles (F=17%; M=10%) as their primary form of cannabis use. Chi square analysis showed a significant effect of age for primary method (χ2 (1)=139.9, p<.001) of cannabis use. Young adults were significantly more likely to report using bongs (Y=19%; O=11%), vaporizers (Y=26%; O=9%), and edibles (Y=12%; O=5%), while participants 26 or older were significantly more likely to report using blunts (O=39%; Y=10%) as their primary method of cannabis use. There were no significant differences between age groups for the primary form of cannabis use. Findings from this study suggest there are significant effects of age and sex on primary method and form of cannabis use. Future studies should examine how other sociodemographic factors may affect cannabis use and how method and form of cannabis use affect long-term health outcomes.

Abstract:
The mechanisms which determine and regulate platelet size are unknown. By phase microscopy, we serendipitously observed that Wistar/Furth (W/F) rats had macrothrombocytopenia. In this study, we have characterized and compared platelets and megakaryocytes (MK) of W/F rats to those of Wistar (W), Long-Evans hooded (LE) and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. In addition, we have examined the mode of inheritance of this W/F rat platelet abnormality. Average platelet count of W/F rats was only 312 ± 57 x 103/mm3 compared to 1086 ± 68, 868 ± 91 and 926 ± 82 x 103/mm3 respectively for W, LE and SD rats. Mean platelet volume (MPV) of W/F rats (8.1 ± 1.4 fl) was twice that of W (4.0 ± 0.2 fl), LE (4.2 ± 0.3 f1) and SD (4.1 ± 0.2 f1) rats. However, average MK diameter and DNA content distribution of W/F rats were not significantly different than those of LE rats. Average MK concentration was somewhat lower (4.5 MK/high power field) in the W/F strain compared to that of LE rats (6.6 MK/HPF). Maze-like membrane formations were observed in W/F MK and platelets by electron microscopy. Reciprocal crosses of W/F and LE rats resulted in offspring with MPVs (4.2 fl) and platelet counts like those of LE rats, indicating that the macrothrombocytopenic trait is recessive in its inheritance. Reciprocal marrow transplants between the W/F and LE strains resulted in MPVs like those of the donor strain indicating that the macrothrombocytopenia is an intrinsic marrow abnormality of the W/F strain. Analysis of W/F platelets by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed two readily detectable differences from those of W and LE rats: (1) absence of a protein of MW of 41,000 and pi of 6.35 and (2) presence of a protein of MW of 35,000 and pi of 5.9. In summary, the W/F rat has a hereditary macrothrombocytopenia which is recessive in nature and not due to differences in MK size or DNA content. These results suggest that the macrothrombocytopenia of W/F rats results from formation of fewer platelets per MK, possibly due to a qualitative or quantitative defect in some component necessary for proper subdivision of megakaryocyte cytoplasm into platelets.

Abstract:
Introduction: The Counseling and Testing Centers (CTC) provide public services aimed at the general population, offering access to serological tests for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and various forms of prevention, from the distribution of male condoms to confidential, individual, and anonymous counseling. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of university students about CTC in the Southwest of the state of Goiás, Brazil. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study with a descriptive quantitative approach based on information collected through an online form. Results: The sample consisted of 120 students, of which 64 (53.3%) are white, 84 (70%) are women, 107 (89.2%) are single, and 88 (73.3%) are from health sciences courses. Sixty-six (55%) participants reported not knowing the CTC and only 7 (5.8%) attended a service at any time in their lives. About the services offered, 70 (58.3%) knew about the free offer of STI tests and 66 (55%) were unaware that the CTC offers individualized prevention strategies. Regarding the medical request, 76 (63.3%) students were unaware that there is no need and 79 (65.8%) were unaware that transvestites and transsexuals can use the social name. After answering the form, 107 (89.1%) participants agreed to seek assistance at the CTC eventually, if needed. Conclusion: The majority of students are white, women, single, from the health area, and unaware of the service and activities performed by the CTC. Thus, the study revealed a situation of clear ignorance of university students about CTC in the Southwest of Goiás, demonstrating the need to publicize the service aiming to increase the demand for care in the region.

Trastorno de Ansiedad: 20%(AC), 60% (R) >6 meses, 40% (A), 0% (AT). Trastorno Ansioso-Depresivo: 10% (AC), 67%(R) > 6 meses, 50% (A) y 33% (AT). References 1. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide with elderly patients being predominantly affected. There seems to be a bias against administering chemotherapy to elderly patients with fewer elderly patients receiving chemotherapy as compared with their stagematched younger patients because of concerns about their capacity to endure treatment. To make personalized treatment decisions and to anticipate serious adverse effects, a toxicity prediction tool that can be computed at the bedside is the need of the hour. This well-validated score has not been tested in the Indian population. So, we decided to test the same score in our patients and try to correlate the score with the observed toxicity. Objectives This study was aimed to determine geriatric functional status by means of a standardized geriatric score and to correlate geriatric score with observed chemo toxicity. Materials and Methods Fifty consecutive elderly patients (age > 60 years) with a diagnosis of cancer and scheduled for chemotherapy were recruited. These patients were evaluated using the geriatric assessment tool which is based on functional, nutritional, and psychological status. After that patient’s pretherapy, chemo toxicity score or geriatric score was calculated using a published well-validated tool that consisted of 11 prechemotherapy variables as follows:a) Age of patient,b) Cancer typec) Planned chemotherapy dose,d) Planned number of chemotherapy drugse) Hemoglobin,f) Creatinine clearanceg) Geriatric questions like -i. How is your hearing?ii. Number of falls in past 6 months?iii. Can take your own medicines?iv. Does your health limit you in walking one block ? during past 4 weeksv. How much of time has your physical health or emotional problems interfered with your social activities (like visiting with friends, relatives etc.)The patients were then followed from the beginning to the end of six cycles of their chemotherapy regimen. Toxicities were noted after each clinical encounter by using the NCI-CTCAE, version 3.0.25. Results General characteristics: the mean age of participants was 66 years (standard deviation [SD] = 4.6 and range: 60–85 years). Of them, 60% received polychemotherapy and 82% received standard doses of chemotherapy. The mean score on activities of daily living was 66.7, comorbidity score was 2.7, the psychological scale was 63.8, the social-activity scale was 54.3, and social-support scale was 64.1. The mean pretherapy toxicity score is 7.24 according to the toxicity calculator. At least one grade 3 to 5 toxicity occurred in 30% of the patients (66% of grade 3, 20% of grade 4, and 13.3% of grade 5). The correlation between the predicted score and observed graded toxicity score by Pearson’s scale (α = 0.05) was 0.63. Conclusion The prediction model is easy to use, thus increasing the feasibility of incorporation in daily practice is important. It may enable oncologists to better assess the risk/benefit ratio and to adjust the treatment accordingly.
