Abstract:
Radiotherapy is one of the principal cancer treatments. Despite its intensive use in clinical practice, itseffectiveness depends on several factors. Several studies showed that the tumor response to radiotherapy differ from one patient to another. The response of tumor is influenced by several factors like hypoxia and multiple interactions between the tumor microenvironment and healthy cells. Five major biologic concepts called “5 Rs” resume these interactions. These concepts include reoxygenation, DNA damage-repair, cell cycle redistribution, cellular radiosensitivity and cellular repopulation. The optimal treatment strategy must consider these “5 Rs". In this study, we proposed as a first an approach to oxygenation modeling that can be considered as an optimization process in the absence of data concerning oxygen. We used a multi-scale model to predict the effects of radiotherapy on tumor growth based on information extracted from positron-emission tomography (PET) images. Then, we included to our model the ‘’5 Rs’’ of radiotherapy, to predict the effects of radiation on tumor growth. Finally, we presented a study of the effect of different types of fractionations on tumor response to radiotherapy

Abstract:
This dissertation aimed to investigate the relation between the pedagogical practices of the teacher of a baby nursery in a Public School of Early Childhood Education in Santa Maria/RS, and the propositions of the National Curriculum Guidelines for Early Childhood Education (approved by CNE / CEB No. 20/09 and Resolution CNE / CEB No. 05/09) for the teaching of children that are younger than six years old. In this process we tried to (a) understand the implications and possibilities of implementation of these Guidelines in the school and the teacher‟s practice, (b) understand the movements that policies have to be effective in practice, (c) discuss the concept of education of babies expressed in legal document by the teacher. The methodology chosen to conduct the research was qualitative, having its basis in the approach of the policy cycle because we understand that for a policy to be implemented or not, it is necessary to consider all of its interfaces, since its production in the macro contexts until their interpretations and changes in micro contexts. The subjects of the study were the teacher of Baby Nursery II and the director of the School of Early Childhood Education, as a source of information, we used the field diary, participant observation and structured interview. For data analysis, we opted for the content analysis, in which by the different methodological tools, the information and narratives of education professionals were characterized. As a result, it is noteworthy that although there is still misinformation about the current policies of Early Childhood Education, the conception of the child / baby is related to the legal propositions, however the pedagogical practice is justified almost exclusively by the knowledge of caring and educating, considering the actions of caring by feeding and having hygiene practices, and educating by school practices, which do not consider the baby as the protagonist of the action of being in the world.

Abstract:

Treatment wetlands been showed efficient for reducing pollutant in waste water. In Lajeado – RS, Brazil the landfill has poor leachate water treatment. It is necessary to supplement the treatment plant because they need to reduce BOD, COD and nitrate of the water going to recipient. A subsurface flow wetland (SSF) can be a good choice.  In order to be able to design an efficient SSF it is important to understand how the grain sizes of a substrate affect the reducing of pollutants in waste water. This study focus on two substrate, sand with grain size of 0 - 3 mm and gravel with the grain size of 10 - 20 mm. To see the grain size reduces BOD, COD and nitrate best, the experiment used eight pilot scales SSF for leachate water treatment, four filled with sand and four filled with gravel. Two different flows, four with batch and four used continuous flow; two of each was planted with Thypa angustifolia L. Samples were taken from each wetland every week during a four week period. The results showed that the wetlands with the fine- grained substrate; sand gave the better reduction of BOD, COD and TKN (total kjeldahl kväve). It also showed great reduction in color. Important to notice in this study is the lack of time; more samples are required to be able to establish a pattern.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of the study of a group of 5 Gaucho communist teachers, composed of Demetrio Ribeiro Neto, Edgar Albuquerque Graeff, Edvaldo Ruy Pereira Paiva, Enilda Ribeiro and Nelson Souza, members of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), expurgated teachers of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) by the civil- military dictatorship, in 1964, and reunited, mainly, by the desire of change. Attracted by intellectual, professional and behavioral similarities, and by dissimilarities that, in the other, they find their complement, these professionals have united in favor of a desire for emancipation, common to them, making group character indispensable to reach their objectives. As progressive intellectuals organically linked to the proletarian class, the 5 self-commit the commitment to act alongside the people, even not within the scope of the profession, contributing to the desalienation and construction of an ideological project of City and Society. Through a long process of stimulus to thought, a characteristic that characterized by a revolutionary, since simulating irreversible and qualitative changes, encouraged classmates and students to get to know the social reality of the country and to intervene critically in it. Guided by political resolutions of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) and regulated by its statutes, the five communist professors of the Architecture College of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul are concerned with political issues by the Party, such as anti-imperialism, latifundia and the National Culture, theme of the theoretical reflection on the architectural phenomena. Through teaching, militancy in class entities, writing and as technicians of architecture and urbanism did fulfill the social function conferred on them by the PCB.

Abstract:
In various animal species, sensory information can initiate locomotion. This relies on the integration of sensory inputs by the central nervous system. In lampreys, the spinal locomotor networks are activated and controlled by the reticulospinal cells (RS) which constitute the main descending system. In turn, RS cells receive information coming from various synaptic inputs such as the sensory afferents. Once activated by a brief cutaneous stimulation of sufficient strength, RS cells display sustained depolarizations of various durations that rely on calcium-dependant intrinsic properties and lead to the onset of escape swimming. During the course of this Ph.D, we aimed at determining whether synaptic inputs can modulate the duration of the sustained depolarizations and if the different populations of RS cells share the same integrative properties, possibly involving the internal calcium stores. First, our results show for the first time that excitatory glutamatergic inputs, including ascending spinal feedback, contribute to prolong the sustained depolarizations for long periods of time. Cutaneous inputs do not contribute to maintain the sustained depolarizations and inhibitory glycinergic and GABAergic inputs are not sufficient to stop them. Second, we show that in response to cutaneous stimulation, the RS located in the four reticular nuclei display a similar activation pattern and can all produce sustained depolarizations which do not depend on internal calcium release to be maintained. Finally, the results obtained during this Ph.D allowed us to better understand the cellular mechanisms by which the RS cells integrate and transform a brief sensory information into a sustained response associated with a motor command.

Abstract:
AbstractRobotic surgery (RS) continues to impart its role in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) since its first emergence. It has rapidly been adopted by different specialties including general surgery, urology, gynecology, and orthopedic surgery, and now is becoming a mainstay of MIS technique around the globe [1–3]. During the last 30 years, many different robotic systems came into surgical practice but the da Vinci® is currently the most commonly utilized and is available in four different models (standard, streamlined, streamlined High definition, S-integrated). Despite its enhanced view of 3D system and angulations of instruments, its practical application for training surgical residents is less emphasized and addressed [4, 5]. This chapter will guide in the basic principles of setting operating room and equipments for da Vinici®. It is further emphasized that hands-on training on simulators and in operating rooms under a trained mentor is highly suggestive of learning robotic skills.

Abstract:
Abstract. Laser metal deposition (LMD) is a laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology that offers significant advantages in the production and repair of bespoke and valuable parts targeting applications in the aerospace, tooling and medical industries. A significant problem with AM is the development of high residual stresses, deformation and cracking. Advanced sensing technologies can be a useful tool for characterising residual stress (RS) and the structural response of AM aerospace components under fatigue loading conditions. This paper reports on a feasibility study assessing the performance of fibre optic (FO) distributed strain measurement technology to measure surface RS in comparison to traditional electrical resistance strain gauges and the contour method. The results from this study will be used to justify further experimental work.

Abstract:
<p>Starting from Germany, the VFT® bridge girder technology (prefabricated composite beam) has spread in several European countries in the last decades as further development of the standard steel-concrete composite solution. Its configuration fits perfectly to integral frame bridges built over existing infrastructure with the scope to minimize the traffic disturbance. In this paper a further development with the focus on cost efficiency in span ranges of 40-55 m is proposed: the VFT-RS technology. The change consists in using standard rolled sections by adapting them into the integral frame bridge configuration, further enhancing the structural efficiency with the benefits of high- steel strength. The constructive details to achieve the polygonal form have been studied to allow easy fabrication and a maximal clearance height over highway traffic lanes. The VFT-RS solution is conceived as the economic option of standard highway overpasses, with the aim of an overall construction cost reduction of 5%.</p>
