Brown, RFC, WR Jackson, TD Mccarthy, and GD Fallon. "Reactions of Methyl threo-2-Acetoxy-3-chloro-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propanoate and Methyl cis-2,3-Epoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propanoate With 3,5-Dimethoxyphenol: Potential Routes to Flavan-3-ols." Australian Journal of Chemistry 45, no. 11 (1992): 1833. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ch9921833.

Full text
Abstract:
Attempted syntheses of flavan-3-ols by reaction of either methyl threo-2-acetoxy-3-chloro-3-(4-methoxypheny1)propanoate (3) or methyl cis-2,3-epoxy-3-(4-methoxypheny1)propanoate (14) with 3,5-dimethoxyphenol failed to give the required aryl ethers. Products usually were derived from C-alkylation of the electron-rich phenol although reaction of the chloro acetate (3) with the phenoxide ion gave the furanone (5). The single-crystal X-ray structures of methyl 4-hydroxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-methoxyphenylmethyl)-5-oxo-2,5-dihydrofuran-2-carboxylate and cis-3-hydroxy-5,7-dimethoxy-4(4-methoxyphenyl)-3,4dihydr-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one have been determined.

Collins, DJ, and HA Jacobs. "Steric and Stereoelectronic Effects in the Hydrogenolysis and Birch Reduction of Some Hindered Tertiary-Benzylic Carbinols." Australian Journal of Chemistry 40, no. 12 (1987): 1989. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ch9871989.

Full text
Abstract:
3-(4'-Methoxyphenyllpentan-3-ol (3a) and 3-(4'-methoxypheny1)-2,4-dimethylpentan-3-ol (3b) underwent catalytic hydrogenolysis over 10% palladium/charcoal at moderate temperatures and pressures. The more hindered tertiary-benzylic carbinols 3-(4'-methoxypheny1)-2,2,4-trimethylpentan-3-ol (6), 3-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentan-3-ol (3c), 1-(4'- methoxyphenyl )-2,2,6,6-tetramethylcyclohexan-l-ol (8) and 1-(1',1'-dimethylethy1)-6-methoxy- 2,2-dimethyl-l,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-ol (10) were completely resistant to hydrogenolysis, even under vigorous conditions. While the hindered tertiary-benzylic carbinols (6),(8) and (10) readily underwent Birch reduction, the analogous di-t-butyl anisyl carbinol (3c) was unchanged. The failure of (3c) to undergo Birch reduction is probably due to a hitherto unrecognized stereoelectronic effect: the C-OH bond of (3c) is constrained to lie more or less in the plane of the benzene ring, and addition of an electron to the benzene ring of the derived oxyanion (31) is inhibited in this conformation.

Abstract:
Six new 1-aroyl-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazines have been prepared, using coupling reactions between benzoic acids and N-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine. There are no significant hydrogen bonds in the structure of 1-benzoyl-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H20N2O2, (I). The molecules of 1-(2-fluorobenzoyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H19FN2O2, (II), are linked by two C—H...O hydrogen bonds to form chains of rings, which are linked into sheets by an aromatic π–π stacking interaction. 1-(2-Chlorobenzoyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H19ClN2O2, (III), 1-(2-bromobenzoyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H19BrN2O2, (IV), and 1-(2-iodobenzoyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H19IN2O2, (V), are isomorphous, but in (III) the aroyl ring is disordered over two sets of atomic sites having occupancies of 0.942 (2) and 0.058 (2). In each of (III)–(V), a combination of two C—H...π(arene) hydrogen bonds links the molecules into sheets. A single O—H...O hydrogen bond links the molecules of 1-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine, C18H20N2O3, (VI), into simple chains. Comparisons are made with the structures of some related compounds.
