Abstract:
This chapter discusses primary prevention measures that disrupt transmission of oncogenic infections. It begins by discussing vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) and human papillomavirus (HPV), two major causes of cancer for which safe and effective vaccines are currently available. It briefly discusses the importance of treatment and prophylaxis against human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), which potentiates the virulence of other viral infections as well as directly increasing the incidence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It does not discuss the treatment of HBV or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, since these are considered in Chapters 25 and 33. Also beyond the scope of this chapter are the randomized clinical trials currently underway to assess the efficacy and feasibility of eradication of Helicobacter pylori (Chapters 24, 31), vaccination against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (Chapters 24, 26, 39), or the prevention of schistosomiasis and liver flukes (Chapters 24, 33, and 52).

Beirne, Margaret M. Women and Men in the Fourth Gospel. Sheffield Academic Press Ltd, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350886612.

Abstract:
The fourth gospel presents the reader with an early christian text in which women and men are treated as "a discipleship of equals" as this term is broadly understood in the work of Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza but qualified with respect to her discussion of the meaning of 'equality' when applied to gender. Specifically, the gospel contains six examples of "gender pairs" of characters (a widely-accepted lukan feature). The members of each pair are portrayed in a parallel or contrasting faith encounter with the Johannine Jesus which is of substantial theological importance to the gospel's stated purpose (John 20:31). The six pairs are the mother of Jesus (2:1-11) and the royal official (4:46-54); nicodemus (3:1-12) and the samaritan woman (4:4-42); the man born blind (9:1-41) and Martha (11:1-54); Mary of Bethany and Judas (12:1-8); the mother of Jesus and the beloved disciple (19:25-27); Mary Magdalene (20:11-18) and Thomas (20:24-29).

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Jeremiah’s Book of Consolation as it recapitulates the history of the Babylonian crisis in six poignant poems—from invasion to exile to manumission—and ritually marks each phase of the national crisis. The final composition in this series, Jer. 31:15–22, is of particular significance as it ‘resuscitates’ an ancestral mother, Rachel, and engages her in mourning rituals over Judah, cast as her dead child. This chapter argues that in light of the calibre of the task at hand—to bury a nation envisaged effectively as dead and to ‘inhume’ an entire age, i.e. Israel’s monarchy—Jeremiah engages Rachel in vigorous funerary rites: (1) inconsolable wails (v. 15); and (2) circumambulating choreography (v. 22). This chapter argues that Rachel’s actions should be viewed as part of God’s benevolent scheme of Judah’s restoration and thus as the culmination of Judah’s ritual responses to the Babylonian crisis.
