Abstract:
The properties of plastic parts that used for outdoor applications are changed under weathering conditions. Weathering involves considering the effects of solar radiation, temperature, humidity, pollutants. By adding some additives such as carbon black, TiO2, Hals and Tinuvin, the weathering effect could be decreased. In this study, LDPE films by adding different percentages (0.1, 0.5 and 1%) of carbon black (C.B.) with 0.2 mm thickness were produced by extrusion process. Samples were cut according to ASTM D882 and to accelerate the tests, samples located in accelerated artificial weathering device up to 1400 hour. The device was set at 40°C and humidity of 50%. Required samples for tensile strength test bring out of device at selected period and tensile strength was done by 350 mm/min strain rate. The results show that samples containing carbon black have tensile stress and elongationmore than the clear films. Carbon black absorbs UV light and heat that causing to delay in broken links and destroying the molecular. The optimum percent for tensile stress was 0.5 and for elongation was 1% C.B.

Abstract:
The cracks have emerged on the second lining of right tunnel for three months after tunneling in the Xin Chang Tunnel. The maximum crack depth is 264.0 mm which is explored by a RS-ST01C type ultrasonic tester. A fiber Bragg grating strain sensor is developed for measuring the surface strain of second lining. By converting the deflection of structure into the strain of displacement telescopic gauge, a fiber Bragg grating is mounted on two ends of gauge where suffers the strain, and as a result its Bragg wavelength will be shifted. The strain sensitivity and temperature sensitivity of the grating sensor are separately 0.677×10-6/ and 0.968×10-5 /°C. Grating sensors are installed on the corresponding linings according to the crack distribution. In an observation period of 51 days, the measurement results indicate that the lining cracks are derived from the tilted pressure of surrounding rock. After a backfill period of 29 days, the tunnel structures are gradually tending to be stability in the following operation period of 429 days.

Abstract:
This research investigated the suitability of Crumb Rubber (CR) as an alternative binder to supplement bitumen. The emerging trends in the world has challenged researchers to seek means of converting waste to wealth partly because of the environmental concerns they pose and partly because there is a general dearth of raw materials as the stock of the existing ones are fast depleting. In this research, the traditional Marshall Test method was arbitrary used to test 20%, 40%, and 60% CR proportions replacement of bitumen against the control (0% CR). The results were assessed based on the provisions of Asphalt Institute Marshall Criteria to determine the conformity with engineering properties-Stability, Flow, and Void analysis. The results indicated that 40% CR content resulting in Stability - 11.0KN, Flow - 4.3mm and VIM-14.45% trailed those with content 0% CR, but adequate in engineering properties to replace bitumen in asphalt mix. The results meet the criteria of medium class traffic specified by Asphalt Institute (1979).

Abstract:
Composite structures adopted in aerospace structures have attracted much interest to structural health monitoring (SHM) for localization of impact and damage positions due to their poor impact resistance properties. Propagation mechanism and frequency dispersion characteristics of Lamb wave signals on composite structures are more complicated than that on simple aluminum plates. Recently, much attention has been paid to the research of time reversal focusing method because this method shows a promising advantage to give a focusing image of the structural damage, improve the signal-to-noise ratio and compensate the dispersion of Lamb wave signals. In this paper, aiming at developing a practical method for on-line localization of impact and damage on aircraft composite structures which can take advantage of time reversal focusing and does not rely on the transfer function, a new phase synthesis based time reversal focusing method is proposed. Impact and damage images are given out directly through time reversal focusing based on phase synthesis process of the signals. A SHM demonstration system is built on a composite panel of an aircraft wing box with many bolt holes and stiffeners using the phase synthesis based time reversal focusing method. The demonstration results show that this method can estimate the positions of impact and damage efficiently with a low sensitivity of velocity errors.

Abstract:
This paper presents the work done for the preparation of precursor for producing Ti-Al-V-Y alloy via FFC Cambridge process. The aim of the work is also to investigate the uniformity of the phases formed during the pre-processing of the precursor. The importance of the alloy for mechanical and medical applications is well known. Titanium oxide (TiO2), vanadium oxide (V2O5), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and yttrium oxide (Y2O3) were selected as raw materials for precursor. The expected composition for the new alloy is Ti-6Al-4V-0.5Y. Water was used as a binder for the precursor. The materials were pre-mixed by ball milling for 24 hours and pressed using 13 mm die. The pressed mixtures were then sintered in the furnace at 900°C for 24 hours. The sintered samples were analysed using the optical microscope, electron micrograph with EDX and XRD. The result of the optical micrograph showed that the raw materials were uniformly mixed and well distributed with the presence of porosities. Electron micrograph further verified the morphology of the materials and the elements distribution in the precursor. The overlapping of yttrium and vanadium, Y(VO4) was observed and verified by XRD. The derived formulated precursor was then ready for further work of reduction to Ti-Al-V-Y alloy using FFC Cambridge process.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper presents a theoretical investigation of free vibration analysis of a functionally graded beam (FGM) under the bending-torsion loading using a classical elasticity theory. The FG beam is assumed to have an open edge crack. It is assumed that the material properties of the simply-supported cracked beam, vary along the beam thickness following a polynomial distribution in the thickness direction. This analysis is based on the linear fracture mechanics. First of all, governing equations and boundary conditions of the FG beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The governing equations are solved using generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method. By applying GDQ method, the governing differential equations convert to a linear system of algebraic equations. Then solving the eigenvalue problem, natural frequencies of the FG beam can be found. The results indicate that natural frequencies in the presence of a crack are affected by the crack ratio and location.

Abstract:
The ornamental granite stone-processing industries of Tamilnadu state produce tons of fine powder wastes during sawing and polishing. It is a non-biodegradable waste that can be easily inhaled by human being and animals and is also harmful to the environment. The main objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the suitability of granite powder (GP) waste as a substitute material for fine/natural aggregate in concrete production. The physical and chemical characterization of the GP waste was also addressed. The experimental parameter was the percentage of granite powder substitution. The cubes and cylinders were prepared using 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% of fine/natural aggregate substituted by GP waste. To understand fully the influence of GP waste on the behavior of concrete, several tests such as density, slump cone, split tensile strength, flexural strength; ultra sonic pulse velocity (UPV) and compressive strength tests were performed. The Young’s modulus of elasticity of the concrete was also determined. The GP waste exhibited a very high specific surface value of about 340kg/m2 and chemical analysis results showed that the examined material contains about 77% of silica (SiO2). Experimental results revealed that the rough texture and high specific area of the GP waste significantly decreased the workability of the concrete especially for the substitution level of 20% and 25%. The obtained test results show that the substitution of GP waste up to 15% does not affect the mechanical and fresh concrete properties of the concrete and it was recommended that the replacement of natural sand by GP waste up to 15% of any formulation would be favorable for concrete making.

Miniature heat pipe is one of promising means of removing high heat flux for electronics cooling in limited available space. How to produce narrow and deep microcapillary grooves is the critical issue in promoting performance of axially grooved miniature heat pipe. In this work, the microcapillary grooves for miniature cylindrical heat pipe was fabricated by using oil-filled high speed spinning method. The forming process of microcapillary grooves was investigated. The influence of technical parameters on characteristics of microcapillary grooves was analyzed and the optimal technical parameters were found out. The experimental results show that drawing speed ranging from 48cm/min to 64cm/min, spinning ball number of 4 and big distance between the end of multi-tooth mandrel and the center of spinning balls within 3.7 mm should be chosen to obtain narrow and deep microcapillary grooves. In addition, the forming mechanism was investigated by observing microstructure of cross-section of microcapillary grooved tubes.

Abstract:
To investigate surface stress distribution of rectangle piston ring, method of increment loading based on energy variational principle is used to ascertain contact state and solve elastic contact problems by iteration. Calculation results show that the central section of the first sealing surface is subjected to lower stress while two sides higher stress. The theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that appearance of stress peak on surface is related to movement direction of piston ring. Relatively critical wear regions of piston ring are consistent with finite element analysis results. Wear width of both sides is 0.2mm more or less. The section of maximal stress appears at position near ring groove of the first sealing area.

Abstract:
Present research paper is an attempt to examine the dynamics of snow cover by using Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) in Gori Ganga watershed, Kumaun Himalaya, Uttarakhand (India). For the study of snow cover of Landsat satellite imageries of three different time periods like Landsat TM of 1990, Landsat TM of 1999 and Landsat TM 2016 were used. Geographical distribution of snow cover reveals that in 1990 about 30.97% (678.87 km2), in 1999 about 25.77% (564.92 km2) area of the Gori Ganga watershed was under snow cover while in 2016 the snow cover was found only 15.08% (330.44 km2). These data suggest that due to global warming about 348.43 km2 snow cover of Gori Ganga watershed has been converted into non-snow cover area at an average rate 13.40 km2/year during the last 26 years.
