Abstract:

The article presents data on the main stages of formation and development of the pathological anatomy department of Kazan (Imperial) University from department approval under the auspice of Professor A.V. Petrov in December, 1965 to its reorganization by merging of two departments - Pathological Anatomy and Pathological Physiology in June, 2014. Data on the department heads for the 150-year history are summarized, the main directions of scientific research conducted under the department heads supervision are described. Particular consideration is given to the Kazan scientists-pathologists achievements and contribution in fundamental and practical pathological anatomy, related subjects, clinical practice, social sciences, students’ education and doctors of various specialties training. Joint General Pathology department faculty new challenges are identified, namely transition plan generation, educational process radical restructuring in order to optimize it according to modern requirements for the higher and postgraduate education system. Initiated and conducted measures in connection with the department reorganization in the framework of new General Pathology discipline allowing to preserve the pathological anatomy structural and organizational integrity as a basic science, which is also of great practical importance, are presented.

Abstract:

An analysis of 447 books in arts/humanities, science/technology, the social sciences, and generalities determined how frequently and for what purpose cross-references were used in back-of-book indexes. Of 376 indexes examined, 300 included cross-references. The average index had 32 cross-references per index or 96 cross-references per 1,000 text pages. Of the three major subject areas, cross-references most commonly occurred in science/technology indexes. ‘See’ references were surprisingly dominant over ‘see also’, especially in science/technology and the social sciences. The references made many kinds of links, most often to show synonomy, class membership, and agent/activity relationships. It is encouraging that many indexes have cross-references, but name indexes could have more.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of corporate social responsibility and service quality on customer loyalty mediated by the corporate image of Wardah customers in Jakarta. Samples were chosen using purposive sampling of a total of 300 respondents who are Wardah customers in Jakarta. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed using Smart PLS 3.0. The results show that: 1) CSR significantly contributes to corporate image; 2) Service quality significantly contributes to corporate image; 3) Service quality significantly contributes to customer loyalty; 4) Corporate image significantly contributes to customer loyalty; 5) Corporate image as mediating variable of CSR and customer loyalty; 6) Corporate image not significantly contribute as mediating variable to service quality and customer loyalty; and 7) CSR does not significantly contribute to customer loyalty. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menguji pengaruh tanggung jawab sosial perusahaan dan kualitas pelayanan terhadap loyalitas pelanggan yang dimediasi oleh citra perusahaan pada pelanggan Wardah di Jakarta. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan teknik purposive sampling dengan 300 orang responden pelanggan Wardah di Jakarta. Pengambilan data dilakukan melalui kuesioner dan dianalisis menggunakan Smart PLS 3,0. Hasil menunjukkan: 1) Tanggung jawab sosial perusahaan berperan kepada citra perusahaan; 2) Kualitas pelayanan berperan kepada citra perusahaan; 3) Kualitas pelayanan berperan kepada loyalitas pelanggan; 4) Citra perusahaan berperan kepada loyalitas pelanggan; 5) Citra perusahaan berperan sebagai variabel mediasi antara tanggung jawab sosial perusahaan dan loyalitas pelanggan; 6) Citra perusahaan tidak berperan sebagai variabel mediasi antara kualitas pelayanan dan loyalitas pelanggan; 7) CSR tidak berperan pada loyalitas pelanggan.

Abstract:

A perennial criticism regarding the use of social media in social science research is the lack of demographic information associated with naturally occurring mediated data such as that produced by Twitter. However the fact that demographics information is not explicit does not mean that it is not implicitly present. Utilising the Cardiff Online Social Media ObServatory (COSMOS) this paper suggests various techniques for establishing or estimating demographic data from a sample of more than 113 million Twitter users collected during July 2012. We discuss in detail the methods that can be used for identifying gender and language and illustrate that the proportion of males and females using Twitter in the UK reflects the gender balance observed in the 2011 Census. We also expand on the three types of geographical information that can be derived from Tweets either directly or by proxy and how spatial information can be used to link social media with official curated data. Whilst we make no grand claims about the representative nature of Twitter users in relation to the wider UK population, the derivation of demographic data demonstrates the potential of new social media (NSM) for the social sciences. We consider this paper a clarion call and hope that other researchers test the methods we suggest and develop them further.

Abstract:

This paper examines the growth and development of the literature of “environmental communication” research. The paper collects citations of all papers matching specified keywords covering environmental communication topics in the social science journal literature from relevant indices. The indices used were: the Institute for Scientific Information's (ISI) Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science), the ISI Arts and Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science), Communication Abstracts, PsycINFO, Anthropological Literature, Sociology Abstracts and Periodical Abstracts (Pro-Quest Direct). The paper analyzes the collected citations for journal of publication, date, and frequency of publication by year, author, and keywords and topics. The paper shows what topics of attention, what fields, and what journals have been interested in publishing environmental communication research, and some of the authors leading the way. In addition, basic topics of interest for environmental communication research are discerned. The literature review shows the need for a more centralized point of publication for environmental communication research.

The fundamental contradiction between fantasy literature and religion is that the religious paradigm is based on faith, while the fantastic paradigm is based on fiction. For this reason, the theme of religion has been practically absent in the works of science fiction for a long time. Science fiction was more focused on the achievements of scientific and technological progress than on issues of religious consciousness. A. P. Kazantsev is one of the most prominent representatives of the literary and philosophical field of “scientific and technical romanticism”. The ideological paradigm of A. P. Kazantsev is based on the three foundations: humanism, technocracy and communism. Having studied technocracy as the most promising way of development for mankind, the author came to the conclusion that technocracy without humanity has no value. According to A. P. Kazantsev, natural values — kindness, humanism, love — are the very essence of human nature and therefore a socio-political system should be built on these bases. Religion is planted “from above” and without proper nourishment is quickly forgotten by society. So, for many centuries, religion, up to a certain point, played a big role in the political life of individual societies. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to review and synthesise academic research in environmental accounting and demonstrate its shortcomings. It provokes scholars to rethink their conceptions of “accounts” and “nature”, and alongside others in this AAAJ special issue, provides the basis for an agenda for theoretical and empirical research that begins to “ecologise” accounting. Design/methodology/approach Utilising a wide range of thought from accounting, geography, sociology, political ecology, nature writing and social activism, the paper provides an analysis and critique of key themes associated with 40 years research in environmental accounting. It then considers how that broad base of work in social science, particularly pragmatic sociology (e.g. Latour, Boltanksi and Thévenot), could contribute to reimagining an ecologically informed accounting. Findings Environmental accounting research overwhelmingly focuses on economic entities and their inputs and outputs. Conceptually, an “information throughput” model dominates. There is little or no environment in environmental accounting, and certainly no ecology. The papers in this AAAJ special issue contribute to these themes, and alongside social science literature, indicate significant opportunities for research to begin to overcome them. Research limitations/implications This paper outlines and encourages the advancement of ecological accounts and accountabilities drawing on conceptual resources across social sciences, arts and humanities. It identifies areas for research to develop its interdisciplinary potential to contribute to ecological sustainability and social justice. Originality/value How to “ecologise” accounting and conceptualise human and non-human entities has received little attention in accounting research. This paper and AAAJ special issue provides empirical, practical and theoretical material to advance further work.

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to reveal the experiences of social studies and science pre-service teachers on the use of creative comics in the teaching of subjects related to environmental education. Since this study focuses on the pre-service teachers' experiences was used phenomenology design. A totally of 65 pre-service teachers participated in the study (35 social studies teacher candidates, and 30 science teacher candidates). Within the scope of the research, environmental education was given to pre-service teachers during one semester. This education process also includes creating and using creative comics in environmental education. Semi-structured interviews and observations were used as data collection methods. Thematic analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. The results of the research show that creative comics can be used as an alternative teaching material in environmental education. According to pre-service teachers, creative comics enrich the learning environment. Results of the research, teachers need to pay attention to some issues for efficient use of creative comics. When using creative comics, teachers should keep students away from competition and negative criticism, which can negatively affect creativity.

Abstract:

In the last decades a growing awareness emerged of the relevance of corruption as an hidden factor which may negatively affect political and economic decision-making processes. In spite of a lively scientific debate there is no general consensus on a commonly accepted definition of what corruption is. The A. distinguishes three main paradigms, focusing on different (though not irreconcilable) variables. The first is the economic paradigm, which usually takes the principal-agent model of corruption as its founding pillar. In this paradigm corruption is considered the outcome of rational individual choices, and its spread within a certain organization is influenced by the factors defining the structure of expected costs and rewards. A second approach – the cultural paradigm – looks at the differences in cultural traditions, social norms and interiorized values which shape individuals’ moral preferences and consideration of his social and institutional role. These are a leading forces that can push a corrupt public or private agent (not) to violate legal norms. A third neo-institutional approach considers also mechanisms which allow the internal regulation of social interactions within corrupt networks, and their effects on individuals’ beliefs and preferences. Though the corrupt agreements cannot be enforced with legal sanctions, several informal, nonwritten rules, contractual provisos and conventions may regulate the corrupt exchange between agent and corruptor. Corruption is the outcome of a multitude of individual and collective choices which change public opinion towards corruption and its diffusion throughout the state, markets and civil society. There is no univocal recipe to deal with anti-bribery measures, since corruption is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon. Reforms aimed at dismantling systemic corruption have to be finely tuned against its hidden governance structures, i.e. its internal regulation of exchanges and relationships. Otherwise, a vicious circle may emerge: the more an anticorruption policy is needed, because corruption is systemic and enforced by effective third-parties, the less probable its formulation and implementation. Only when official rules are complemented by coherent informal institutions, bottom-up initiatives, they tend to produce the expected outcomes and make anticorruption regulation more effective.

Abstract:

Self-regulation is important at every stage of the education process and must be measured accurately in order to know at what students’ levels are. The aim of this study is to develop a scale that is able to validly and reliably determine the self-regulation levels of secondary school students regarding science. The study uses the survey design, a quantitative research method. The sample of the research consists of 500 students enrolled in three secondary schools in Kayseri Province’s Melikgazi district during 2018 spring semester. While preparing the scale, which was developed based on social cognitive theory, a literature review was conducted, expert opinions were sought, and a pilot study was conducted to test the suitability of the items. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA) were performed to ensure the construct validity. As a result of the EFA, a structure consisting of 26 questions was obtained whose three factors explain 48% of the variance. This structure was confirmed through CFA, which was conducted on the data obtained from a sample different than the one used in the EFA. Cronbach’s alpha of reliability for the scale was calculated as .940. As a result, a valid and reliable scale for science education based on social cognitive theory and Zimmerman’s self-regulation model was obtained that is simple enough that middle school student can understand it.

Abstract:

At the turn of the 21st century, sociology as a science has become an object of criticism both from inside and outside the discipline. At the same time, the late-20th and early 21st centuries endorse an unprecedented splash of technological development, specifically the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies. The paper tries to show a relation between these two tendencies. For the authors, two questions are in the spotlight: (1) how have evaluations of the professional sociologists on what is happening to the discipline changed over the last 20 years? and (2) how could these evaluations be related to the research questions that the development of AI technologies brings to social sciences? In the first part of the paper, the authors examine and compare the participants' positions in the discussion about the future of sociology organized by the journal Contemporary Sociology in 2000. The second part of the paper examines two articles published in 2019 where it was proclaimed “the end of sociology.” The paper discusses why the debates about the crisis of sociology have shifted towards radical criticism during these years and how new arguments refine and supplement the previous discussions. In conclusion, the authors propose one way out of the crisis in sociology. They suggest the radical renewal of sociological science into a-typical and anti-disciplinary social analytics with the central orientation into “artificial sociality” inquiries.

The concept of diaspora has already appeared in the first translation of the Bible, in the 300s BC. However, the meaning behind the concept is hard to define. Numerous definition attempts occurred throughout the years since there is a scientific interest in this topic, but none of them is substantial. Further issues arise if we take into consideration the fact that basically every social science (history, sociology, cultural anthropology, jurisprudence, economics, political science, international relations, etc.) use the diaspora terminology without a consistent, reliable definition. Therefore, the disciplines include different attributes to the concept of diaspora which leads to a scientific chaos in this field. The paper aims to gather and demonstrate all social sciences approach to the diaspora concept and conclude the common diaspora attributes with the intention to create a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and steady diaspora definition.

Background: Human papilloma virus is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection globally. It is a well-established cause of cervical cancer and about 75% of sexually active women and men will acquire this infection at some time in life. This study assessed the risk perception of human papilloma virus infection and its vaccine uptake among university students in Jos, Plateau State Nigeria. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey conducted among 300 university students who were selected using a multistage sampling technique. A semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to assess risk perception and vaccine uptake. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23. Associations between independent and dependent variables were determined using χ2 test while binary logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with risk perception, with significant value set at < 0.05. Results: Respondents’ awareness of human papilloma virus infection and the vaccine was 148 (49.3%) and 62(20.7%) respectively. Ninety four (31.3%) students had good risk perception of the infection while 206 (68.7%) had poor perception. Three (1.0%) students had taken the vaccine with no statistically significant difference between health and social science students (p = 0.05). Health science students had 3 times better risk perception than social science students (OR = 3.42, 95% CI = 2.03 - 5.77; P< 0.001). Conclusion: Human papilloma virus infection risk perception and vaccine uptake were poor among Jos University students. There is a need to improve the vaccine uptake through awareness creation and advocacy in Nigeria.

Cross-national collaboration has been shaped by internationalization of scientific relationships. To study the synergic network of high quality research patterns, this paper collects a total of 300 top 50 items, in each indicator from the big database, Essential Science Indicators, which lists top-ranking papers, scientists and institutions from 2005 to 2015. First, the country level relations of co-authorship addresses in five indicator variables are extracted in the field of social sciences to build international collaboration networks. The social network analysis (SNA) method was applied to calculate the metrics of vertices, edges, average degree, average shortest path, diameter, clustering coefficient and betweenness centrality to illuminate the structural characters and collaboration patterns. Based on the international collaboration similarities, this paper also visualizes the endemic clustering groups of six networks, as cluster dendrograms, using Hierarchical Clustering (HC) method. Findings illustrate that USA, England and Canada are outstanding countries in the international collaboration networks of five indicators. There are geographical groups in European countries in the collaboration networks of scientists, institutes and countries/territories. It is also found that international collaboration contributes to both highly cited papers in the recent 10 years and hot papers in the recent 2 years in this field, rather than geographical similarity does. Those conclusions are critical for policy makers to produce guidelines on how to encourage researchers to build collaboration networks with high-level scholars in different countries

To provide necessary information for further pasteurization experiments and computer simulations based on radio frequency (RF) and microwave (MW) energy, dielectric and thermal properties of walnut components were measured at frequencies between 10 and 3000 MHz, temperatures between 20 and 80 °C, and moisture contents of whole walnuts between 8.04% and 20.01% on a dry basis (d.b.). Results demonstrated that dielectric constants and loss factors of walnut kernels and shells decreased dramatically with raised frequency within the RF range from 10 to 300 MHz, but then reduced slightly within the MW range from 300 to 3000 MHz. Dielectric constant, loss factor, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity increased with raised temperature and moisture content. Dielectric loss factors of kernels were greater than those of shells, leading to a higher RF or MW heating rate. Penetration depth of electromagnetic waves in walnut components was found to be greater at lower frequencies, temperatures, and moisture contents. The established regression models with experimental results could predict both dielectric and thermal properties with large coefficients of determination (R2 > 0.966). Therefore, this study offered essential data and effective guidance in developing and optimizing RF and MW pasteurization techniques for walnuts using both experiments and mathematical simulations.

Техника речевых эмоций как генератор рекламного сообщения остается до конца не изученной, свидетельством чему является исследование, посвященное эмоциям страха. В данной статье рассматривается эмоция страха в социальной и коммерческой рекламе (на примере текстов г. Перми). Цель научной статьи заключается в психолингвистическом описании основных номинативных единиц страха в текстах социальной и коммерческой рекламы городских вывесок. Научная новизна исследования заключается в том, что впервые представлено комплексное описание социального и коммерческого рекламного текста вывески как особого речевого жанра; на основе разноаспектного анализа выявлены речевые тактики эффективности / неэффетивности воздействия рекламы на потребителя. Кроме того, работа выполнена на региональном фактическом материале (текстах вывесок г. Перми). Представлены факторы, влияющие на формирование эмоции страха у потребителя при восприятии рекламного текста. Определены разновидности оценки чувства страха в рекламном тексте горожанами Перми разной возрастной категории. Содержание исследования ориентировано на систематизацию подходов к изучению чувства страха в социально значимых ситуациях для потребителя. Сформулированы рекомендации по эффективному и правомерному использованию речевых единиц, репрезентирующих страх, согласно законам правовой этики. Результаты исследования могут быть успешно применены в качестве теоретической основы для подготовки специалистов в области рекламоведения, а также в практике теории коммуникации The advertising text in modern research is considered in different aspects: structural, linguostylistic, linguoculturological, etc. The technique of speech emotions, as a generator of an advertising message, remains not fully understood, as evidenced by a study on the emotions of fear. This paper examines the emotion of fear in social and commercial advertising (using the texts from Perm as an example). The purpose of the scientific article is to psycholinguistically describe the main nominative units of fear in the texts of social and commercial advertising of city signboards. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time a comprehensive description of the social and commercial advertising text of a signboard is presented as a special speech genre; based on a multi-aspect analysis, speech tactics of the effectiveness / ineffectiveness of the impact of advertising on the consumer are revealed. In addition, the work was carried out on regional factual material (texts of Perm signboards). The publication presents the factors influencing the formation of the emotion of fear in the consumer when perceiving the advertising text. The types of evaluation of the feeling of fear in the advertising text by Perm citizens of different age categories are determined. The content of the study is focused on the systematization of approaches to the study of feelings of fear in socially significant situations for the consumer. The author formulates recommendations for the effective and lawful use of speech units representing fear, according to the laws of legal ethics. The results of the research can be successfully applied as a theoretical basis for training specialists in the field of advertising science, as well as in the practice of communication theory.

The article presents the results of a bibliographic and thematic review of the “empowerment” category, the history, key directions and main characteristics of the “empowerment” approach. The empowerment-approach is successfully applied in the world of science and the practice of empowerment of individual, communities, organizations, certain social groups, (women, youth, older people, workers, consumers, patients, minorities, etc.) in psychology, sociology, social work, healthcare, pedagogy, management, politics, economics, technical sciences, and in interdisciplinary discourses. The concept is rarely used in Russian scientific discourse; in political research, it is understood as a struggle for rights and powers, and social and political activism; in pedagogical research and in social work, it is considered as an activation and expansion of the potential resources. There is a wide range of interpretations and discussion of the concept as a goal, value, principle, process, result, method, technology, and strategy. Empowerment creates conditions for the transformation of people, groups, communities, and the social environment in mutual activities based on self-organization and/or supportive facilitation. A characteristic feature of empowerment is the non-linearity, dynamism, multilevel integration of macro-social, meso-social, micro-social, and intrapersonal factors and processes. The levels of individual, group, community, organizational, and institutional empowerment are distinguished. In this paper, we propose the beginning of a discussion about the empowerment approach as a way to study and overcome social problems in mutual activities of people, groups and communities as actors, and transforming agents.

O Primeiro Discurso foi escrito em 1749, há quase 300 anos. Nesse período, a ciência e a nossa compreensão sobre ela mudaram profundamente. Mais importante, nesse período surgiu da ciência algo imprevisto para Rousseau no Primeiro Discurso: a tecnologia moderna. A proposta deste trabalho é, pois, revisitar as críticas de Rousseau à ciência com um olhar contemporâneo, buscando avaliar o quanto daquelas críticas ainda faz sentido nos panoramas científico e social atuais. Para tanto, classificamos esquematicamente as críticas de Rousseau em dois grupos: as que acusam a inutilidade das ciências e as que acusam como nociva a sofisticação que as ciências produzem na sociedade. Defenderemos que o surgimento da tecnologia moderna tornou obsoletas as críticas quanto à inutilidade ao mesmo tempo que potencializou as críticas quanto à sofisticação. The First Discourse was written in 1749, almost 300 years ago. Since then, science and our understanding of it have changed completely. More important, in this period something new and unpredictable from Rousseau's view point has emerged from science: modern technology. In this essay, thus, we intend to review Rousseau's criticisms of science from a contemporary perspective to evaluate if they are still appropriate in face of our transformed society and science. To do so, we classify Rousseau's criticisms in two groups: those which claim that science is futile and those which blame science for the sophistication of society. We argue that the emergence of technology has become obsolete the criticisms of the first group meanwhile has made powerful those of the second group. The concept of "other", which is made attractive by different discourses in the consumption culture, is presented to users as an object to be consumed. The other phone, the other house, the other body, etc., which the consumers desire to reach. advertisements are always made more attractive than what they have. In a sense, instead of marketing products to people in line with their needs, new needs are tried to be marketed to this audience. As a result, in today's rapidly changing world, the necessity of going beyond traditional stereotypes has arisen in understanding consumer behavior. While examining the purchasing behavior of consumers, some new facts brought about by the changing and globalizing world order should also be taken into account, apart from the classical factors. Advertising is one of the most important concepts that trigger social consumption. Advertisements reach the target audience through different channels and television advertisements take a large share of this part. What is important for a company that advertises is that it prefers its own brand among the many different brands when the consumer goes to the market. However, with the emergence of many similar brands in the same categories, classical advertisements are not enough for a product to be the first choice in the minds of the consumer. In this study, how the desire factor that is tried to be evoked in television commercials is processed in the commercials. The relationship between the interest levels of consumers' gender identities and socioeconomic status levels regarding advertisements and the effect of these concepts on the shaping of consumption culture is discussed in scale.

This paper discusses how insights from constructivist studies on the place of context, reflexivity, and framing in studies of public understanding of science may be applied within a survey framework. By emphasizing the role that images or ideologies of science play in science policy discourse, surveys are conceptualized as a means to map the social pervasiveness of such ideologies. It is argued that survey results may contribute to a broadening of the framework of science policy, if questions that explicitly reflect civic perspectives on science are included in survey questionnaires. An experiment with three non-standard questions in a Norwegian survey in 1999 on public understanding of science is seen to provide some empirical support for the viability of this approach.

“Golem science” is Harry Collins and Trevor Pinch's humanized image of science, filled with irresolution, that they wish to substitute for the “god-like” image of definitive knowledge characteristic of public presentations of science. This god-like image creates unrealistic expectations that fuel “anti-scientific” reactions when unmet. This paper argues that the “flip-flop” view set forth by Collins and Pinch is a deficit model that positions the public as sociologically incompetent. It reflects the dilemma of professional social scientists who deconstruct science whilst appealing to the authority of science. This dilemma is an outcome of a deeper tension within science between the universal status of knowledge claims and the particular, human conditions of knowledge production. Drawing on discursive (or rhetorical) psychology, I show that this tension plays out in the rhetorical organization of scientific discourse in the form of a characteristic contrast between empiricist and contingent repertoires. A similar tension is discernible in everyday, mundane reasoning, which suggests that a golem image of science is already present in commonsense understanding alongside the “god-like” image. Thus, the public understanding of science is dilemmatically constituted, providing the conditions of argumentation with science seen in “antiscience”—itself a “folk devil” and rhetorical label. The analysis in this paper is illustrated using the example of creationism, which arises from an argumentative engagement with science that draws on the resources provided by the dilemma of science in conjunction with other resources drawn from Christianity. There is no simple “flip-flop” here. Further research into rhetorical reasoning in public understanding is called for on the grounds that greater appreciation of this is needed alongside golem science to improve relations between scientists and the public.

Abstract:

Understanding attitudes towards science is crucial to safeguard the future of science, the application of its results and the inclusivity of decision-making processes related to science and technology. Most studies focus on attributes of social groups to explain attitudes towards science. In this study, we aim to move the discussion forward by focusing on perceived attributes of science itself by analysing over 300 letters to the editor in two Dutch national newspapers. The authors of these letters express a large degree of trust in science as a source of societal progress, if research is conducted according to a specific set of rules. Yet, they believe that these rules are under attack. The interests of universities as organizations and individual academics as well as the involvement of industry and government in research are perceived as conflicting with these rules. We conclude with recommendations for further research and practice.

Abstract:

Purpose: The study sought to establish the determinants of sustainability of water projects in Machakos County, Kenya. Specifically, the study sought to establish the effect of project management capacity, government policies, resource support and monitoring on sustainability of water projects in Machakos County Kenya. The study was guided by Project Management Competency Model, Policy Theory, Resource Based View Theory and Program Theory.Methodology:The target population comprised of 244 water projects in the county implemented by the county government, national government community and non-governmental organizations. The unit of observation was water project managers. A descriptive research design was adopted in the study. The study applied Yamane sampling formula to derive a sample of 151 respondents to be involved in the study. The study used quantitative data that was collected from respondents using 5-point Likert scales questionnaire with closed ended questions. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used. The study findings were presented through tables and figures.Results: The study found that the key significant determinants of sustainability of water projects in Machakos County were capacity of the project management, government policies, monitoring and resource support. The study concluded that project management capacity had the greatest determinant of sustainability of water projects in Machakos County, followed by resource support, then monitoring while government policy had the least determinant of sustainability of water projects in Machakos County.Contribution to policy and practice: The study recommends that the government should advocate for proper planning with involvement of the benefiting community and timely implementation with the required results. This can be done through making of a policy by the ministry demanding for the practice of the same by the involved organizations. The project committee should set up financial structures considering both rising of funds and dissemination of the same in relation to operating and maintaining of the project. This can be done through learning and training on the same. The study also recommended that water beneficiaries and management should be sensitized to improve their knowledge on conservation and protection of water facilities from mismanagement and destructions. Community members should be involved in the determination of the water sale rates. County governments and the general management of the water projects in Kenya should ensure that the local community members are trained to do minor repairs.

Abstract:

This paper aims to analyze the way in which the Greek press treats the socio-epistemic constitution of science and technology. By “socio-epistemic constitution” we mean the following dimensions: (a) techno-scientific methodology, (b) the social organization of the techno-scientific endeavor, and (c) the interactions of science and technology with other public spheres. Our methodology is based on a content analysis of a sample consisting of 1,867 relevant articles from four national Greek newspapers. The analysis showed that although there is a constant flow of techno-scientific articles, the internal aspects (methodology and internal organization) of science and technology become apparent in only a small minority of these articles. By contrast, external relationships, mainly with politics and economics, are emphasized by focusing on the positive social impact of the techno-scientific endeavor. In general, the Greek press makes a positive contribution to the advancement of the public understanding of science and technology, as the prominent presentation of some of their socio-epistemological components forms a realistic “post-academic” image of these two areas.

Stolyarov ; Association of Russian School Librarians ; Library Science Department of the International Informatization Academy ; Russian State Library ; Book Culture Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences ; National Library of Sakha Republic (Yakutia). – Moscow : RUSLA, 2019. – 416 p. [In Russian]In his new book, Yury N. Stolyarov reconstructs the biography of Nikolay [Nikolas] Aleksandrovich Rubakin, the author of over 280 books and 300 articles. The monograph is based on the series of papers by Stolyarov published in professional periodicals. The author includes Rubakin’s biography beginning with his birth in the town of Oranienbaum (now (Lomonosov, Leningradskaya oblast, Russia) till his last days in Switzerland. Yu. Stolyarov portrays a person who had to emigrate, though his all life was wholeheartedly devoted to Russia. The author investigates into archival materials, publications by the scholar, his personal correspondence, which enabled Stolyarov to demonstrate political, social and cultural impacts on Rubakin’s life and vectors of his studies. In his book, Stolyarov emphasizes the scholar’s great contribution to the study of problems in library science and bibliology, i. e. the role of libraries in self-education, promotion of science knowledge among population groups, collection development, book selection for children, reading theory, etc. Yu. Stolyarov also focuses on bibliopsychology — an independent discipline, developed by N. Rubakin and won the support of the library community. The findings of bibliopsychology has been being still used globally.
