Abstract:
Dairy industries are asked to be increasingly competitive and efficient. Despite the increasing trend in milk yield and protein content during the last decade genetic selection, milk coagulation ability has diminished and even if the absolute amount of cheese produced has increased, the relative cheese yield from a set amount of milk, has decreased. As casein content and variants, along with milk clotting properties (MCP) are determined to a large extent at DNA level, genetic selection and embryo transfer can provide efficacious tools to reverse this trend and achieve improvements. The aim of the proposed research was to determine how rapidly and to what extent milk coagulation properties could be improved by using embryo transfer (ET) as a tool to increase the frequency of k-casein BB genotype cattle and reducing A and E variants in an Italian Holstein herd with a low prevalence of the favourable genotype. In the effort to optimize superovulation protocols and results, synchronization of wave emergence was performed through manual transrectal ablation of the largest (dominant) ovarian follicle on days 7 or 8 of the cycle (estrus = day 0); different drugs and dosage for the superstimulation protocol were experimented trying to overcome the negative effects of stress and the perturbance of LH secretion in superovulated highly producing lactating cows and the use of SexedULTRA™ sex-sorted semen, for artificial insemination of superovulated cows was reported for the first time. The selection program carried out in this research, gave evidence and gathered empirical data of feasible genetic improvements in cheesemaking ability of milk by means of k-casein BB selection. In conclusion, in this project, selection of k-casein BB genotype markedly enhanced cheese-making properties of milk, providing an impetus to include milk coagulation traits in genetic selection and breeding programs for dairy cattle.

Abstract:
2nd Workshop on Kaon Production During the fall of 1996 an internal mini-workshop on kaon production was organized at Rossendorf (cf. FZR-150 [September 19961). The aim of this first workshop was to give a survey on the experimental and theoretical Status of kaon production in elementary hadron reactions and in heavy-ion collisions. Since then the Department of Hadron Physics in the Institute of Nuclear and Hadron Physics of the FZR focused in its research activities on nearthreshold strangeness production in colliding hadron systems and on activities devoted to studies with electromagnetic probes. Since 1996 a considerable Progress has been achieved in the field. New results from COSY (COSY-11, ToF, COSY-13 and first runs at ANKE) as well as SIS (KaoS and FOPI) allow to determine various elementary cross sections in hadron reactions and kaon yields from heavy-ion collisions. These new results led us to organize a second workshop bringing together the experts of these experiments and various theoreticians. An important purpose of the workshop was to enforce the mutual information and to demonstrate the close interrelation of COSY physics and the heavy-ion programme at SIS. Highlights in the field are (i) the consolidation of the need of strong in-medium modifications to describe the K- production in heavy-ion reactions and (ii) refined measurements of various elementary strangeness channels near threshold. For the latter the role of final state interactions must be clarified ta arrive at a unique input to transport-model calculations for heavy-ion reactions. Many experimental aspects included in the programme have been proposed by P. Senger (GSI), whereas the composition of its theoretical part benefitted a lot from the support by J. Aichelin (Nantes).

Abstract:
This present thesis seeks to define the precise grammar of the Spice circuit description language. Spice is the de facto standard for circuit analysis programs. Its lack of clear definition leads to incompatibility between the programs that nominally can share files.
Taking the early 2G6 dialect of Spice as its basic form, a Backus-Naur grammar of the language is developed from the informal published descriptions of the language. Since published descriptions are unclear, reference is made to the Berkeley Spice parser (the Fortran source code of this parser is available). Spice is in widespread use, but there is no formal definition of any of its 30-40 documented dialects and variations. Consequently, there are many ambiguities and contradictions at the lexical as well as syntactic levels.
Major issues in this thesis include lexical disambiguation and precise syntactic definition. A parser is also developed concurrently with the language definition, using the LEX and YACC compiler writing tools. The long-term objective is to establish a reference standard against which deviations of the individual dialects can be measured, and to provide easily used translation tools for conversion between dialects.

Abstract:
Adolph Fick’s original diffusion experiments used two vessels containing water and salt to establish a steady-state concentration gradient that demonstrated the validity of what is now called Fick’s second law of diffusion. The first vessel had a cylindrical shape creating a linear gradient. The second vessel was shaped like a funnel having a correspondent variable flow area. Using Fick’s second law, general solutions for any shape of the vessel are developed for steady diffusion in two and three dimensions, respectively. Two dimensional random walks were performed via computer simulations, and the numerical results are compared to continuum theory. Provided that a sufficiently large number of steps are simulated to allow the random walkers to traverse the total diffusion path, good agreement is achieved between discrete “molecular” motions (random walk) and the classical continuum description provided by scalar field theory (partial differential equations).

Abstract:
In chapter 1 and 2 calcium hydroxide as impregnation agent before steam explosion of sugarcane bagasse and switchgrass, respectively, was compared with auto-hydrolysis, assessing the effects on enzymatic hydrolysis and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) at high solid concentration of pretreated solid fraction. In addition, anaerobic digestion of pretreated liquid fraction was carried out, in order to appraise the effectiveness of calcium hydroxide before steam explosion in a more comprehensive way. In As water is an expensive input in both cultivation of biomass crops and subsequent pretreatment, Chapter 3 addressed the effects of variable soil moisture on biomass growth and composition of biomass sorghum. Moreover, the effect of water stress was related to the characteristics of stem juice for 1st generation ethanol and structural carbohydrates for 2nd generation ethanol. In the frame of chapter 1, calcium hydroxide was proven to be a suitable catalyst for sugarcane bagasse before steam explosion, in order to enhance fibre deconstruction. In chapter 2, effect of calcium hydroxide on switchgrass showed a great potential when ethanol was focused, whereas acid addition produced higher methane yield. Regarding chapter 3, during crop cycle the amount of cellulose, hemicellulose and AIL changed causing a decrease of 2G ethanol amount. Biomass physical and chemical properties involved a lower glucose yield and concentration at the end of enzymatic hydrolysis and, consequently, a lower 2G ethanol concentration at the end of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, proving that there is strong relationship between structure, chemical composition, and fermentable sugar yield. The significantly higher concentration of ethanol at the early crop stage could be an important incentive to consider biomass sorghum as second crop in the season, to be introduced into some agricultural systems, potentially benefiting farmers and, above all, avoiding the exacerbation of the debate about fuel vs food crops.

Abstract:
The thesis analyses the urbanization of Bolgatanga, the regional capital of the Upper East Region of Ghana, identifying the main forces that shaped this process. The main argument is that the commercial and political prominence that the town acquired in the region at the beginning of the 20th century created the conditions for its urbanization. The thesis explores the changes in the settlement pattern, economic trends and political organization that affected the urban landscape of Bolgatanga in this period. The thesis intends to present endogenous changes in the actual production and conceptualization of urbanity. It focuses thus on the processes that led to a radical change in the town’s settlement pattern from the end of the 19th century up to the moment in which people began to commodify their land and ceded their compound farms to new settlers in the late 1930s. This moment represents a rupture with past land tenure practices and, at the same time, the start of a new way of conceptualizing and occupying space. The study of Bolgatanga’s urbanism is framed in the thesis through three broad, and interrelated layers of growth of the town. The first of these layers concerns spatiality and indigenous concepts of belonging. It is devoted to the study of historical changes in the settlement pattern of the people who lived in Bolgatanga. The second layer takes into consideration the dynamism of the town’s political landscape, analysing how the local figures of power interacted with colonialism. The study of the economic networks that connected Bolgatanga with the rest of West Africa represents the third layer of town development. The thesis demonstrates thus that by following the three layers interrelations, it is possible to create a solid analytic outline to explain the urban process that transformed Bolgatanga in the 20th century.

Abstract:
Although New Testament scholars generally acknowledge that "knowing" and "knowledge" play and important role in 2 Peter, little research has to date been done about the motif of knowing in 2 Peter. The aim of this study was to determine what the nature of the motif of knowing in 2 Peter is and what place it takes in his theology. The method that is used is exegetical, and this is done in accordance with the grammatico-historical model within the reformational tradition. The emphasis is especially on the special canonics (Introduction) of the epistle, the analysis of the thought structure, and the definition of the meanings for which words are used. In the analysis of the thought structure the method developed by Coetzee (1988:19-37) is followed to a large extent. The definition of meanings is done mainly in accordance with the method of componential analysis as proposed by Louw and Nida (1972:84-87; 1988i:vi-xx). The motif of knowing occurs in 2 Peter as a clearly repeated and meaningful semantic unit. Although this is not always done in the same way, the motif has a central place in practically every thought unit in the epistle. In the introduction of the letter (1:1-2) the motif of knowing is found in the truths of faith which the readers have accepted, as well as deep knowledge of God and Jesus Christ. In 1:3-11 Peter proposes a summary of his doctrine to his readers, encouraging them to apply these truths with insight and understanding. The ability to understand especially consists in comprehending the implications of a covenantal relationship with God. In the purpose of the letter (1:12-15; 3:1-2) the motif of knowing has a central place. Peter writes the epistle so that his readers will be able, after his death, to evoke from memory the knowledge (of his doctrine) of which they already dispose. The doctrine consists of information made known to them by the apostles about the powerful coming of Christ. The information is based in God's revelation in the glorification of Christ and in the Old Testament prophecies (1:16-21). In 2:1- 3:13, where Peter deals with the false teachers and the mockers, the motif of knowing still plays an important role. In chapter 2 he warns that false teachers will come who, as a result of a lack of insight will propagate licentiousness. He offers the consolation, however, that the Lord remembers to judge false teachers and to save. the believers. He also warns them against, in spite of their knowledge of Christ, returning to their old convictions. When the false preachers mockingly question both God's involvement in history and his judgment, the readers should not forget the know ledge which they have received about God's judgment and his time schedule. They should maintain the right perspective on God's grace and in joy wait upon his advent. Through this epistle the apostle equips his readers with the necessary knowledge to keep them strong against the inevitable onslaughts of the false teachers.

Zhang, Shiqing. "Novel mechanism of 2DG mediated cancer treatment /Zhang Shiqing." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2016. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/353.

Full text
Abstract:
2-deoxy-D-glucose (2DG), a non-metabolizable glucose analog, is currently being used in clinical trials to determine its efficacy in augmenting radiotherapy and chemotherapy of various cancers. It is thought to kill cancer cells by inducing glucose deprivation state. However, 2DG only inhibits glycolysis by 15-40%, not sufficient to simulate glucose deprivation. Further, 2-flour-deoxy-D-glucose (2FDG), which is a more potent inhibitor of glycolysis than 2DG, is less effective than 2DG in killing cancer cells. These observations suggest that glucose deprivation is not the mechanism by which 2DG kills cancer cells. On the other hand, it has been shown that treatment of cancer cells with 2DG leads to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, indicating that cytotoxic effect of 2DG is due to increase ROS. Our lab previously found that inhibition of aldose reductase (AR) activity attenuated 2DG-induced ROS in cardiomyocytes (Tang, et al., 2010). We therefore propose that 2DG-induced ROS increase in cancer cells is a consequence of the depletion of GSH in the process of reduction of 2DG by AR and/or by a related aldose reductase-like enzyme (ARL). These two enzymes are often overexpressed in cancer cells. This proposed project is to test our hypothesis that the cytotoxicity of 2DG is due to the depletion of GSH as a consequence of the reduction of 2DG by AR or ARL. We found that HepG2, SKOV3, HCT116 and CaCo2 cells were sensitive to 2DG, and these cells over-express AR and/or ARL proteins. However, HT29 cells and SW480 cells, which were not sensitive to 2DG, had low level of AR and ARL proteins, indicating that there is a close relationship between sensitivity to 2DG toxicity and the level of AR/ARL in these cells. Further, when AR/ARL activity were inhibited in HepG2, SKOV3, HCT116 and CaCo2 cells by AR/ARL inhibitors fidarestat or tolrestat, the cells were protected against 2DG cytotoxicity. Tolrestat or fidarestat significantly restored the drop of GSH levels in 2DG sensitive cancer cells induced by 2DG. On the other hand, MG-132 and bortezomib, which increased the expression of AR/ARL in HT29 and SW480 cells, made HT29 and SW480 cells more sensitive to 2DG. These experiments confirmed our hypothesis that 2DG toxicity in cancer cells was due to oxidative stress induced by AR/ARL. 2DG is not an efficient substrate for AR/ARL enzymes and it is not very efficient in killing cancer cells. Based on our hypothesis, better AR/ARL substrates should be more toxic to cancer cells that overexpress AR/ARL than 2DG. The cytotoxic effects of glyceraldehyde and diacetyl, which were better substrates for AR/ARL than 2DG, were tested. Both glyceraldehyde and diacetyl were more efficient in killing cancer cells that over-express AR and/or ARL (HepG2, SKOV3, HCT116 and CaCo2) than cancer cells with low levels of AR and ARL proteins (HT29 and SW480). Glyceraldehyde and diacetyl were more efficient in lowering the GSH level in cancer cells that over-express AR and/or ARL. In order to further develop glyceraldehyde and diacetyl as anti-cancer drugs, animal studies were carried out to determine their anti-cancer effects. Both glyceraldehyde and diacetyl significantly inhibited the tumor growth in nude mice tumor xenograft model. In conclusion, this thesis proposed and proved that 2DG kills cancer cells by lowering intracellular GSH levels as a consequence of its reduction by AR/ARL activities, rather than by inhibition of glycolysis. This novel mechanism predicts that better substrates for AR/ARL than 2DG would be more effective in killing cancer cells than 2DG. This was confirmed by using glyceraldehyde and diacetyl. We believe that this would lead to the development of more efficient anti-cancer drugs.

Norman, Liam. "Edge- and region-based processes of 2nd-order vision." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7729/.

Full text
Abstract:
The human visual system is sensitive to 2nd-order image properties (often called texture properties). Spatial gradients in certain 2nd-order properties are edge-based, in that contours are effortlessly perceived through a rapid segmentation process. Others, however, are region-based, in that they require regional integration in order to be discriminated. The five studies reported in this thesis explore these mechanisms of 2nd-order vision, referred to respectively as segmentation and discrimination. Study one compares the segmentation and discrimination of 2nd-order stimuli and uses flicker-defined-form to demonstrate that the former may be subserved by phase-insensitive mechanisms. In study two, through testing of a neuropsychological patient, it is shown that 2nd-order segmentation is achieved relatively early in the visual system and, contrary to some claims, does not require the region termed human “V4”. Study three demonstrates, through selective adaptation aftereffects, that orientation variance (a 2nd-order regional property) is encoded by a dedicated mechanism tuned broadly to high and low variance and insensitive to low-level pattern information. Furthermore, the finding that the variance-specific aftereffect is limited to a retinotopic (not spatiotopic) reference frame, and that a neuropsychological patient with mid- to high-level visual cortical damage retains some sensitivity to variance, suggests that this regional property may be encoded at an earlier cortical site than previously assumed. Study four examines how cues from different 2nd-order channels are temporally integrated to allow cue-invariant segmentation. Results from testing a patient with bilateral lateral occipital damage and from selective visual field testing in normal observers suggest that this is achieved prior to the level of lateral occipital complex, but at least at the level of V2. The final study demonstrates that objects that are segmented rapidly by 2nd-order channels are processed at a sufficiently high cortical level as to allow object-based attention without those objects ever reaching awareness.

Abstract:
Research with young children, critical literacy and new technology is limited (Burnett, 2009; Carrington, 2006; Marsh, 2005.) The purpose of this study is to describe the literacies produced in a second grade classroom, through podcasting, where the teacher attempted to frame my teaching from a critical literacy perspective. The study of this classroom reveals the literacies that come within a critical literacy structure for learning as well as those developments that were significant during the classroomâ s creation of a podcast. Such efforts also reveal the social practices of a teacher and her students as well as the identity and positioning work of selected individuals. A case study approach was used to provide the unique details that describe the classroom experiences of students engaged in such literacy work. The information that this study provides will be useful to researchers and educators as they seek to understand the shifts and possibilities of what critical literacy involves in a second grade classroom. Key findings include changes in the childrenâ s literacy learning when engaged in critical literacy and the literacy work that occurs with the use of technology.

Abstract:
Many formal descriptions of DPLL-based SAT algorithms either do not include all essential proof techniques applied by modern SAT solvers or are bound to particular heuristics or data structures. This makes it difficult to analyze proof-theoretic properties or the search complexity of these algorithms. In this paper we try to improve this situation by developing a nondeterministic proof calculus that models the functioning of SAT algorithms based on the DPLL calculus with clause learning. This calculus is independent of implementation details yet precise enough to enable a formal analysis of realistic DPLL-based SAT algorithms.

Brosgill, Abigail Reibman. "Food and identity in 4th to 2nd century BC Lucania." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/16877.

Abstract:
Identifying the ‘Lucanians’ has long been a complex issue. Myriad approaches have sought to correlate the archaeological record with ancient Greek and Roman narrative, while others have attempted to analyse aspects of warfare, burial rituals, grave goods and architectural typologies from a ‘Lucanian’ perspective. However, one fundamental aspect of cultural identity has hitherto been neglected: food-ways and the domestic food system in particular. Within the discussion of household knowledge, Aristotle notes ‘men must all have food, and the differences in their food have made differences in their way of life’. Despite the incompatibility of hierarchical organisation and the city-state model for ancient ‘Lucania’, the household remains the smallest unit upon which socio-political organisation of any type is rooted; the analysis of food preparation and cooking, beginning at the household level, is therefore essential for the study of ancient identity. Utilising the domestic food system methodology – spatial analysis on food preparation and cooking spaces, artefact analysis related to food-ways and both zooarchaeological and palaeobotanical evidence – this thesis reinvestigates 4th-2nd century BC habitation structures, drawing previously unseen patterns to the fore: 1) a female domestic area inclusive of food preparation, cooking and textile production; 2) an architectural distinction between domestic and ritual food preparation and cooking areas; and 3) communal dining that rejects elite banqueting rituals. That the artefact is an integral dimension of culture is axiomatic. Yet, scholarly approaches to ‘Lucanian’ cultural identity have failed to investigate the behaviour patterns and social interactions imbued within the objects that form the domestic food system. The intrinsic connection to identity encompassed in cookware ceramics, zooarchaeological evidence and domestic assemblages – and, in the relationships to both each other and to the interior space – creates a cultural boundary that provides invaluable information for the study of ‘Lucanian’ identity and, further, facilitates comparative research with similar groups of peoples. The domestic food system procures the baseline upon which shifts in socio-economic and political organisation can be overlaid, thus furthering the overall objective of this thesis: to recognise emerging patterns of cultural resilience and identity related to food practices.

Abstract:
Fire fighting operations, sometimes, can put the life of fire fighters in threat. For example an environment with potential fire risk and with the presence of gas bottles can cause an explosion, besides other dangers, and certainly put the life of both the victims and fire fighters at risk. Recent advancements in the field of robotics enabled to develop a robotic system which can assist the fire fighters to avoid any human injury and property damage. The live update of the map displayed on the operator’s screen, while teleoperating the robot for search process, can help to properly plan the rescue operation. This thesis details the implementation of a rich 2D mapping system for FUMO2 a fire fighting assistant robot developed by AB Realisator. Rich 2D mapping system produces an occupancy grid map, having the geometry and temperature of the environment with position of fire extinguishers, by fusing different sensor modalities. By rich we mean any type of additional information on top of the standard, geometric only, 2D maps. A sensor fusion method is proposed to integrate the distance measurements reported by a laser range finder, temperature readings acquired by a thermal IR camera and the position of fire extinguishers delivered by visible spectrum camera based object detector. The object detector detects the object in real time and is developed utilizing the technique of cascade of boosted classifiers using MB-LBP features. The proposed system is implemented on both FUMO2 a fire fighting assistant robot and in Gazebo simulator for testing and evaluation.

Abstract:
The area of this work is a combination of draping and printing. It strives towards the technique that dazzles the eye with illusions of more than one dimension. As a viewer you will believe that the prints are real drapings while they are flat surfaces. Today prints in fashion are categorized as placed prints or all-over prints, and generally created as a flat surface to decorate the garments. In this work the idea is to manipulate and challenge the boundaries of print and give it life through the body shapes and in the movement. Potentially this work could be an introduction to a new way of working with prints in fashion. This work could poosibly be presented as a new technique where placed- print and all-over prints comes together- called placed all-over prints. Also, it could develop into further techniques in using two-dimensional flatness and save fabric in using photography as an option to the real three-dimensional drapings. Furthermore could it mean savings in material as a conscious choice in the process ? This investigation explores two particular kinds of techniques, - print and draping, that are merged into one expression. The aims of this work is to find new ways of using print in combination with draping in dress and explore the possibilities to find a new technique to create interesting womenswear. To unite dimensions like two-dimensional and three-dimensional as a method of finding new forms and expressions. Through experiments with striped textiles the focus is to investigate the possibilities of greater visual effects on two-dimensional prints. For a depth and to exaggerate the directions in the fabric before translating it into a flat surface the striped textile can be a tool for further design. The striped textile has the potential to help the eye to understand the directions in the print and can be used in more than one dimension and color. To explore how to create 3D effect on 2D in print design through draping in dress is the aim of this work.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The research focuses on fashion design highlighting pattern design, in particular the pattern pieces, as an exploration tool for ideas/shapes. The alternative approach explored in this research is a personal answer to the research question that arose from the fact that the designer did not identify with the conventional approach to fashion design, namely the exploration of three-dimensional shapes through sketches and their translation into pattern design. In this sense, a project was developed with the purpose of using pattern design as a tool for exploring ideas/shapes for the design of garments, in order to enhance the expressiveness of the designer. The methodology used in the research is mixed, interventionist and noninterventionist, of qualitative basis. The dissertation includes the theoretical contextualization and the development of a practical project. From the project resulted in twelve explorations of shapes, and three final artifacts that strengthened the designer's personal approach to problem solving. The designer's ability to visualize the threedimensionality of the body to which she designs is enhanced, as well as the ability to explore more complex forms of preconceived typologies.

Curran, Michael D. "Affective Intelligence, The Political Persuasion Process, And Outcome Intent: An Experimental Test." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195585.

Full text
Abstract:
Political communication scholars aim to understand the effect of messages on political attitudes and behavior. Past scholarship has identified three sources of influence in forming attitudes and behavior: affective, cognitive, and personality factors. While much attention has been paid to the impact of each single factor, little research has attempted to integrate them. Using the Affective Intelligence model as a theoretical point of departure (Marcus, & MacKuen, 1993; Marcus et al., 2000), this dissertation explored the simultaneous--and, in some cases, interactive relationships--between these attitudinal and behavioral influences. An experiment was conducted to answer three questions: first, do the causal claims made by Marcus and colleagues regarding the impact of emotion on political attitudes and behavior hold-up outside the realm of survey research? Second, what role does cognitive appraisals of messages play in the political persuasion process? Finally, does political efficacy moderate the relationships between induced emotional response, cognitive appraisals of messages, and political attitudes and behavior? Alternatively stated, does political efficacy link these factors together? The results of this study should be carefully interpreted as the causal instrument underlying manipulated attitudes was not transparent. The desired experimental manipulation--induced anxiety--was not unidimensional. While inductions did induce negative affect, they simultaneously induced positive affect. Within the confines of this document, this result is discussed at length and numerous possible explanations are offered.Structural equation modeling indicated that affect had a small impact on political attitudes and behavior. Likewise, the impact of cognitive appraisals of messages on attitudes and behavior was small. Alternatively, internal efficacy had a substantial main effect--not an interactive effect--on political attitudes and behavior. In summary, the results demonstrated the power of personality in predicting political attitudes and behavior. By trait, some individuals are more politically efficacious than others. Those with higher levels of internal efficacy tended to identify experimental messages as relevant to the attitudes they held, indicating that confidence in one's ability to comprehend politics and understand political happenings leads to identifying message content as applicable or appropriate. Additionally, these same individuals were likely to seek out more information about politics.

Griswold, Catherine Mary. "Understanding Causes of Attrition of 1st- and 2nd-Year Nursing Students." ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/142.

Full text
Abstract:
Attrition of nursing students has a negative impact on students, university nursing programs, and the heath care community. At a local university, the nursing program and its stakeholders aspire to increase retention of nursing students in order to mitigate the nursing shortage projected over the next decade. The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to high attrition of 1st- and 2nd-year nursing students at a university located in the mid-Atlantic area of the United States. Tinto's model of retention was used as the foundation to explore variables affecting 1st- and 2nd-year nursing students who remained in (n = 30) or left (n = 10 ) the program. This quantitative, cross-sectional research study explored the root causes of nursing student attrition. A Likert-scale survey was used to gather quantitative data to determine student perceptions of academic expectations and nonacademic issues such as work and stress that may increase the risk of attrition. Discriminant analysis determined that reported levels of self-efficacy, perceived faculty support, outcome expectations, and bullying significantly discriminated between program persisters and leavers. Based upon these findings it is concluded that nursing faculty and administrators can increase student retention by increasing students' level of self-efficacy by providing greater support and reducing instances of bullying. Implementation of these practices may result in more students remaining in school, graduating, and competently serving the needs of patients, thus resulting in positive social change.
