Methods borrowed from nonequilibrium thermodynamics and statistical physics have been employed in the quantitative analysis of spatiotemporal chaos in a 2D coupled map lattice (CML). Emphasis is made on entropy, entropy variation and entropy production. These quantities manifest peculiar changes in a region where spiral waves emerge. The spiral waves observed in the 2D CML are found to be dissipative objects with an elevated entropy production.

The present study examined the effectiveness of three types of virtual desktop displays with varying degrees of perceptual cues: two-dimensional (2D) display, three-dimensional (3D) display without motion, and 3D display with motion parallax. It was expected that performance would improve as the number of perceptual cues increased. Participants were asked to search for documents either with an organizational scheme they created themselves or with a preconstructed arrangement. As expected, those who organized their own desktops performed better than those using a preconstructed arrangement; however, these effects were moderated by cue condition. Differences among the cues had no effect on subjective organization. However, searching a preconstructed arrangement benefited from a 2D representation. These findings suggest that a 3D representation may be ill suited to tasks in which semantic material is stored in a virtual information space.

A simple model has been suggested for describing self-organization of localized charges and quantum scattering in undoped GaAs/AlGaAs structures with 2D electron or hole gas created by applying respective gate bias. It has been assumed that these metal / dielectric / undoped semiconductor structures exhibit predominant carrier scattering at localized surface charges which can be located at any point of the plane imitating the GaAs / dielectric interface. The suggested model considers all these surface charges and respective image charges in metallic gate as a closed thermostated system. Electrostatic self-organization in this system has been studied numerically for thermodynamic equilibrium states using the Metropolis algorithm over a wide temperature range. We show that at T > 100 K a simple formula derived from the theory of single-component 2D plasma yields virtually the same behavior of structural factor at small wave numbers as the one given by the Metropolis algorithm. The scattering times of gate-induced carriers are described with formulas in which the structural factor characterizes frozen disorder in the system. The main contribution in these formulas is due to behavior of the structural factor at small wave numbers. Calculation using these formulas for the case of disorder corresponding to infinite T has yielded 2–3 times lower scattering times than experimentally obtained ones. We have found that the theory agrees with experiment at disorder freezing temperatures T ≈ 1000 K for 2D electron gas specimen and T ≈ 700 K for 2D hole gas specimen. These figures are the upper estimates of freezing temperature for test structures since the model ignores all the disorder factors except temperature.

Abstract Follicular lymphomas (FL) account for 35-40% of all adult lymphomas. Treatment typically involves chemotherapy combined with the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody rituximab (RTX). The development of type II anti-CD20 MAb obinutuzumab (GA101) aims to further improve treatment. Here we show using FL cells that RTX and GA101 displayed similar activity on RL cells cultured in 2D. As 2D culture cannot mimic tumor spatial organization, conventional 2D models may not reflect the effects of antibodies as they occur in vivo. Thus, we created a NHL 3D culture system, termed multicellular aggregates of lymphoma cells (MALC), and compared RTX and GA101 activity. Our results show that both antibodies display greater activity towards FL cells in 3D culture compared to 2D culture. Moreover, we observed that in the MALC model GA101 was more effective than RTX in inhibiting tumor growth through induction of (lysosomal) cell death and senescence; and in inhibiting intracellular signaling pathways such as mTOR, Akt, PLCgamma and Syk. Altogether, our study demonstrates that spatial organization strongly influences response to antibody treatment supporting the use of 3D models for the testing of therapeutic agents in NHL.

Here we present 1D, 2D and 3D gold self-organization nanostructure generated from reverse micelles (microemulsion system).Gold nanoparticles were prepared by the reduction of HAuCU in CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide)/Octane+l-Butanol/H2O microemusion system using NaBH4 as the reducing agent. Typically, 0.3g of CTAB, 0.148ml of 0.056M HAuCl4 aqueous solution, l.Og octane (surfactant) and 0.25g 1-butanol (cosurfactant) were mixed together and stirred vigorously for 10 min until a homogenous phase was obtained.

In this article, based on the data on the convective heat transfer from the mantle wedge to the 2D heat flow anomaly observed in the rear of the Central Crimean arch, the angle of inclination of the mantle wedge and the rate of subduction of the East Black Sea lithospheric plate under the lithosphere of the Scythian continental plate (Crimean region) are estimated. The effects of the 410 km and 660 km phase transitions are taken into account. Within the framework of the geodynamic model constructed the horizontal extent of the 2D heat flux anomaly observed in the rear of the Crimea mountain belt corresponds to subduction velocity of ~ 40 mm per year which is close to that observed with the help of geodetic means. Ascending convective movements in the mantle can carry mantle calcareous-alkaline magmas (with hydrocarbon geo-fluids contained in them) into the near-surface layers of the Earth’s crust, and, consequently, oil and gas fields should be confined to zones located in the upper part of the lithosphere, above the convective vortices of the Karig.

Our aim was to elaborate a novel method for fully controllable large-scale nanopatterning. We investigated the influence of the surface topology, i.e., a pre-pattern of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) posts, on the self-organization of polystyrene beads (PS) dispersed over a large surface. Depending on the post size and spacing, long-range ordering of self-organized polystyrene beads is observed wherein guide posts were used leading to single crystal structure. Topology assisted self-organization has proved to be one of the solutions to obtain large-scale ordering. Besides post size and spacing, the colloidal concentration and the nature of solvent were found to have a significant effect on the self-organization of the PS beads. Scanning electron microscope and associated Fourier transform analysis were used to characterize the morphology of the ordered surfaces. Finally, the production of silicon molds is demonstrated by using the beads as a template for dry etching.

Inspired by the patterns of multicellularity in choanoflagellates, the closest living relatives of animals, we quantify the biophysical processes underlying the morphogenesis of rosette colonies in the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta. We find that rosettes reproducibly transition from an early stage of 2-dimensional (2D) growth to a later stage of 3D growth, despite the underlying variability of the cell lineages. Our perturbative experiments demonstrate the fundamental importance of a basally secreted extracellular matrix (ECM) for rosette morphogenesis and show that the interaction of the ECM with cells in the colony physically constrains the packing of proliferating cells and, thus, controls colony shape. Simulations of a biophysically inspired model that accounts for the size and shape of the individual cells, the fraction of ECM, and its stiffness relative to that of the cells suffices to explain our observations and yields a morphospace consistent with observations across a range of multicellular choanoflagellate colonies. Overall, our biophysical perspective on rosette development complements previous genetic perspectives and, thus, helps illuminate the interplay between cell biology and physics in regulating morphogenesis.

Abstract Atmospheric convection exhibits distinct spatiotemporal variability at different latitudes. A good understanding of the effects of rotation on the multiscale organization of convection from the mesoscale to synoptic scale to planetary scale is still lacking. Here cloud-resolving simulations with fixed surface fluxes and radiative cooling are implemented with constant rotation in a two-dimensional (2D) planetary domain to simulate multiscale organization of convection from the tropics to midlatitudes. All scenarios are divided into three rotation regimes (weak, order-one, and strong) to represent the idealized ITCZ region (0°–6°N), the Indian monsoon region (6°–20°N), and the midlatitude region (20°–45°N), respectively. In each rotation regime, a multiscale asymptotic model is derived systematically and used as a diagnostic framework for energy budget analysis. The results show that planetary-scale organization of convection only arises in the weak rotation regime, while synoptic-scale organization dominates (vanishes) in the order-one (strong) rotation regime. The depletion of planetary-scale organization of convection as the magnitude of rotation increases is attributed to the reduced planetary kinetic energy of zonal winds, mainly due to the decreasing acceleration effect by eddy zonal momentum transfer from mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) and the increasing deceleration effect by the Coriolis force. Similarly, the maintenance of synoptic-scale organization is related to the acceleration effect by MCSs. Such decreasing acceleration effects by MCSs on both planetary and synoptic scales are further attributed to less favorable conditions for convection provided by weaker background vertical shear of the zonal winds, resulting from the increasing magnitude of rotation.

Co-crystals of Co(II) salt and 1H,1′H-[3,3′]bipyridinyl-6,6′-dione 1 with the composition 1·Co(CHOO)2(H2O)4 were obtained by mixing both reactants. The single-crystal structure reveals that the metal salt and organic ratio is 1:1. The supramolecular organization of the two components in the co-crystal was mainly dictated by hydrogen bonds between 1 and Co(II) complex. Infrared and powder X-ray diffraction were used to confirm the homogeneity and the phase purity of the bulk crystalline sample of 1·Co(CHOO)2(H2O)4. TGA/DTA was recorded to evaluate the thermal stability of the co-crystals.

The 4D organization of the interphase nucleus, or the 4D Nucleome (4DN), reflects a dynamical interaction between 3D genome structure and function and its relationship to phenotype. We present initial analyses of the human 4DN, capturing genome-wide structure using chromosome conformation capture and 3D imaging, and function using RNA-sequencing. We introduce a quantitative index that measures underlying topological stability of a genomic region. Our results show that structural features of genomic regions correlate with function with surprising persistence over time. Furthermore, constructing genome-wide gene-level contact maps aided in identifying gene pairs with high potential for coregulation and colocalization in a manner consistent with expression via transcription factories. We additionally use 2D phase planes to visualize patterns in 4DN data. Finally, we evaluated gene pairs within a circadian gene module using 3D imaging, and found periodicity in the movement of clock circadian regulator and period circadian clock 2 relative to each other that followed a circadian rhythm and entrained with their expression.

Mobile cells discriminate and adapt to mechanosensory input from extracellular matrix (ECM) topographies to undergo actin-based polarization, shape change and migration. We tested ‘cell-intrinsic’ and adaptive components of actin-based cell migration in response to widely used in vitro collagen-based substrates, including a continuous 2D surface, discontinuous fibril-based surfaces (2.5D) and fibril-based 3D geometries. Migrating B16F1 mouse melanoma cells expressing GFP–actin developed striking diversity and adaptation of cytoskeletal organization and migration efficacy in response to collagen organization. 2D geometry enabled keratinocyte-like cell spreading and lamellipod-driven motility, with barrier-free movement averaging the directional vectors from one or several leading edges. 3D fibrillar collagen imposed spindle-shaped polarity with a single cylindrical actin-rich leading edge and terminal filopod-like protrusions generating a single force vector. As a mixed phenotype, 2.5D environments prompted a broad but fractalized leading lamella, with multiple terminal filopod-like protrusions engaged with collagen fibrils to generate an average directional vector from multiple, often divergent, interactions. The migratory population reached >90% of the cells with high speeds for 2D, but only 10–30% of the cells and a 3-fold lower speed range for 2.5D and 3D substrates, suggesting substrate continuity as a major determinant of efficient induction and maintenance of migration. These findings implicate substrate geometry as an important input for plasticity and adaptation of the actin cytoskeleton to cope with varying ECM topography and highlight striking preference of moving cells for 2D continuous-shaped over more complex-shaped discontinuous 2.5 and 3D substrate geometries.

We present an approach based on acoustic levitation to grow the cells without wall interactions in order to promote 3D cell architecture (spheroïd, organoïd). The 3D microenvironment is indeed closer to In Vivo physiological behavior. The suspended cells are moved toward the acoustic pressure nodes where they are trapped and maintained in acoustic levitation in perfectly straight monolayers reaching very quickly the classical confluency of the cells in 2D culture. Interestingly, by maintaining the monolayers of MSCs in culture over a 24-h period, the MSCs spontaneously self-organized from cell sheets to cell spheroids with a characteristic time of about 10 h. This approach of 3D cell culture is based on the use of the acoustic wave coupled with microfluidics. We designed a standing wave cavity to generate a large acoustic radiation force (ARF) with an optical access, which allows the characterization of the self-organization dynamics. This 3D cell culture method has been validated on MSCs over 24h experiments. The MSCs viability has been checked. Moreover, they show a higher differentiation capacity compared to standard 2D culture conditions. These results open the path to long-time cell culture in acoustic levitation of cell sheets or spheroids for any type of cells.
