Abstract:
This thesis investigates the feasibility of deploying mobile communication networks at the THz frequency range. Three areas were identified as the major issues on the way towards realising a functional THz mobile communication system: the high atmospheric attenuation levels and obstacle shadowing at the THz range, the deficiency in THz devices suitable for mobile telecommunications and the availability of reliable models for the analysis and design of THz radio networks.

Abstract:

Market information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape
Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market
information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo
requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype
consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such
as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

This is the eighth workshop to be organised under the postgraduate programmes in electrical and electronic engineering (EEE). The workshop concludes the Research Seminar Series, which has provided a platform for disseminating the latest research activities in related technologies through its weekly seminars. The EEE courses cover a broad range of technologies and this is reflected in the variety of topics presented during the workshop. In total, thirty-three papers have been selected for the proceedings, which have been divided into seven sections. The workshop aims to be as close to a `real¿ event as possible. Hence, authors have responded to a Call for Papers with an abstract, prior to the submission of the final paper. This has been a novel experience for many, if not all of the contributors. Clearly, authors have taken up the challenge with enthusiasm, resulting in what promises to be an interesting and informative workshop.

Berangi, Reza. "Co-channel interference cancellation in mobile cellular communication systems." Thesis, 1998. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/15437/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, mobile communications has become very popular and the demand for its services has increased dramatically. The capacity of mobile communication systems is mainly limited by co-channel interference caused by frequency reuse. The acceptable co-channel interference at the receiver determines the minimum allowable distance between adjacent co-channel users and hence the system capacity. One approach to increase the capacity is to employ co-channel interference resistant receivers. The research work presented in this thesis deals with the designing of such receivers for cellular mobile communication systems.

Abstract:
Persistently Present argues that we need to more fully reassess our thinking about the relationship(s) between social connectedness and technologically mediated forms of communication (particularly social-mobile technologies). Noting that contemporary social life is marked by connections that are more flexible, accessible, negotiable, and persistent because communication opportunities are nearly constant, I argue that social-mobile technologies are shifting and reconfiguring the ways that students build and maintain their social relationships. Within this environment social-mobile technologies are effectively serving as tools of social extensibility , allowing individuals to expand, enhance, and extend their social presence. As a result, these technologies are altering the when, where, and how (contexts) of contemporary connectedness and interactions. The concept of social extensibility is investigated across four important and interdependent areas that emerged in my data and the related literature: connectivity, virtual spaces, non-spaces, and expressiveness.

Zonoozi, Mahmood Mohseni. "Handover in digital cellular mobile communication systems." Thesis, 1997. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/15348/.

Full text
Abstract:
A mathematical formulation is developed for systematic tracking of the random movement of a mobile station in a cellular environment. It incorporates mobility parameters under generalized conditions, so that the model could be tailored to be applicable in most cellular environments. This model is then used to characterisendifferent mobility-related traffic parameters in a cellular system. These include the cell residence time of both new and handover calls, channel holding time and the average number of handovers per call. It is shown that the cell residence time can be described by the generalized gamma distribution, while the channel holding time can be best approximated by the negative exponential distribution. Based on these findings a teletraffic model that takes the user mobility into account is presented and is substantiated using a computer simulation. Further, the influence of cell size on new and handover call blocking probabilities is examined. The effect of the handover channel reservation on call dropout probability is also examined to determine the optimum number of reserved channels required for handover. Improvement to handover performance is investigated in terms of reduction in the number of unnecessary handovers as well as reduction in handover delay time. For this purpose an analytical method is developed which determines the optimum hysteresis level and the signal averaging time under shadow fading. The results are applicable in both micro- and macro-cellular systems.

Abstract:
This paper presents an exploratory empirical study of mobile videoconferencing according to user’s context in order to suggest guidelines for the improvement of the user interface in mobile video communication devices. Through rich exchange of information, mobile video communication can provide a better sense of presence than other means of communication. Yet the current mobile interfaces lack flexibility to be creative and have more meaningful exchanges in a videoconference. We conducted observations with sixteen participants in three activities where their conversations, reactions and behaviours were observed. Two focus groups were used to identify habits formed from regular use. Results suggest an important difference between using the front-facing or back-facing camera and a clear need for tools that provide more control over the video exchange. From these results, the study proposes several design guidelines for mobile video communication interfaces, respecting the construction of the user’s mobile context.

Penev, Vladimir. "Noise blanker for land mobile radio systems." Thesis, 1995. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/18203/.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of private mobile radio systems (taxis, police, emergency services, dispatch systems etc.) is undergoing accelerated change and deregulation. More users, demanding more services with better quality, are squeezed into the same bandwidth. However, noise and impulsive noise levels on the radio path are increasing and this reduces quality. This project seeks to use advanced signal processing to develop a generic noise blanking technique suitable for a new generation of mobile radio equipment to be developed by Motorola Australia. The project involves an analysis of impulsive noise sources (car ignitions, overhead powerlines etc), a review of existing noise blanking techniques, which will then lead to the development of an appropriate noise blanking technique suitable for the impending deregulated environment. The method chosen used a surface acoustic wave delay filter (SAW) and a balanced blanker switch. It outperformed the pervious noise blanker in both bench and field tests. The shape of the blanking pulse was found to be critical for good blanker performance.

Stojcevski, Aleksandar. "Fuzzy technology application for mobile positioning in cellular communication." Thesis, 2000. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/18213/.

Full text
Abstract:
In engineering systems there is generally two classes of knowledge: objective knowledge, which can be quantified using the laws of traditional mathematics, and subjective or intelligent knowledge, that cannot be modeled mathematically but can be expressed in linguistical terms. Fuzzy Logic (FL) is a method that combines these two forms of knowledge, and as such provides a powerful tool for solving real engineering problems. A fuzzy logic system (FLS) is the methodology of applying FL to engineering systems. In general, a FLS can be considered as a non-linear mapping of crisp (firm) input data to crisp output data. It is the inclusion of subjective knowledge in a FLS that leads to a plethora of mapping possibilities, which may not be possible using traditional mathematical modeling techniques. A fuzzy logic system consists of four main elements: fuzzification, rule based, inference engine and deffuzification. Fuzzy logic has been successfully adopted in many real-world automatic control systems including automobile transmission, subway systems, industrial robots, washing machines, cameras and air-conditioners. In contrast, the utilization of fuzzy logic in mobile communications systems is recent and limited. Understanding general mobile communications is essential in order to go on and develop a mobile positioning application. The successful applications of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) techniques in many areas draw a huge amount of attention to its industrial applications. However, lack of structured methods and tools for design and analysis is preventing this revolutionary controller from playing a more significant role in mobile communications. A methodology to construct and analyse a FL controller to be used in mobile positioning would significantly improve the efficiency of FLC design, increase the quality of FLC by allowing the designer to develop and design the controller based on some specifications and requirements, and then validate that design.

Stojcevski, Aleksandar. "A reconfigurable analog-to-digital converter for a mobile receiver." Thesis, 2004. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/15363/.

Full text
Abstract:
The evolution of new telecommunication standards is increasingly leaning towards higher data transmission rates. The boundaries between digital and analog signal processing is impending closer to the antenna, therefore aiming for a software-defined radio solution. In terms of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) of mobile terminal receivers, this indicates higher sample rate, lower power consumption and higher resolution. With comparison to other ADCs, the pipelined ADC architecture has most successfiilly covered the wide resolution limits and data rate requirements of these terminal receiver architectures. However, even though fix word-length pipeline ADC architecture could be a suitable device for the mobile receiver, it still has a distinct disadvantage when it comes to power consumption. In this thesis, the requirements of ADC of the mobile receiver architecture are studied and analysed using the system specifications of the 3rd Generation (3G) Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) standard.

Leon, Ayala Sandra Caterine. "Les personnes âgées face au défi d'utilisation des nouvelles technologies : étude de l’utilisabilité des interfaces de téléphones portables." Thèse, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/4736.

Full text
Abstract:
Technological progress and the growing aging population are two major trends of the last decade. The ubiquitous proliferation of mobile communication devices during this period has significantly altered people’s communication habits. The constantly changing mobile phones, their increasing features, the numerous icon designs, the variety of user interfaces and its complex navigation require nowadays not only more time for adaptation and learning but also a significant cognitive effort. Information technology and communication (ICT) have become essential tools of modern life. For seniors, this constantly mutating universe with its new digital devices makes information accessible to many thus contributing to a generational divide. The lack of reference and support and the physical or cognitive impairment that some people often develop while aging makes the use of such products very difficult. Both, a physically and cognitively accessible system becomes a real necessity in our modern society since it could help seniors live more autonomously and« connected ». This research aims to identify the challenges related to mobile phone use and reveal specific problems that older people encounter. The study focuses on the population that is little familiar with these devices especially since communication technologies seem aimed at the younger generations and professionnels. Through qualitative research seniors’ usage pattern will be studied allowing us not only to establish different user profiles with respect to ICT but also to better understand the challenges related to the perception, comprehension and manipulation of mobile phone user interfaces.

Abstract:
Radio communication systems of the future will require a large increase in user capacity. To achieve this, cell sizes will reduce and the number of base stations will increase. Current base station architectures use analogue combining techniques which are expensive, voluminous and inflexible. This thesis investigates a Digital Signal Processing (DSP) solution which produces a cheaper, smaller and more flexible multichannel base station transmitter design. The main design challenges of the new DSP low power combining architecture are the multichannel combining algorithm, the frequency translation of the multichannel signal to radio frequency, the Digital to Analogue Conversion (DAC) interface and the wideband ultra-linear power amplifier. This thesis considers the pre-power amplifier stages.

Renolds, Victor Alexander. "Touching knowledge: digital media practice and medium theory informing learning on mobile touch screen devices." Thesis, 2017. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/36450/.

Full text
Abstract:
The years since 2007 have seen the worldwide uptake of a new type of mobile computing device with a touch screen interface. While this context presents accessible and low cost opportunities to extend the reach of higher education, there is little understanding of how learning occurs when people interact with these devices in their everyday lives. Medium theory concerns the study of one type of media and its unique effects on people and culture (Meyrowitz, 2001, p. 10). My original contribution to knowledge is to use medium theory to examine the effects of the mobile touch screen device (MTSD) on the learning experiences and practices of adults. My research question is: What are the qualities of the MTSD medium that facilitate learning by practice? The aim of this thesis is to produce new knowledge towards enhancing higher education learning design involving MTSDs. The project involved a class of post-graduates studying communications theory who were asked to complete a written major assessment using their own MTSDs. Their assignment submissions form the qualitative data that was collected and analysed, supplemented with field notes capturing my own post-graduate learning experiences whilst using an MTSD. I predominantly focus on the ideas of Marshall McLuhan within the setting of medium theory as my theoretical framework. The methods I use are derived from McLuhan's Laws of the Media (1975), its phenomenological underpinnings and relevance to the concept of `flow' (Csikszentmihalyi, 2014b, p. 24). The key finding of the study is that the experience of being in control is a central issue for students when they use the MTSD to learn. In pursuing this issue I discover the relevance of paradox to my investigation, which develops as the centrepiece theme and method that I deploy for my further analysis of the MTSD.

The basis of this research is directed towards the Private Mobile Radio (PMR) networks, which play significant roles in taxi, police, ambulance and other such services. With an ever increasing need for data transmission, the current PMR systems which were designed for voice are not adequate. This research will examine a digital modulation scheme which can co-exist with an analog system. The generation of the digital modulation will be examined in terms of Adjacent Channel Interference (ACI) requirements. Simulation techniques for the mobile radio channel are discussed, for evaluation of demodulator performance. Existing demodulation techniques were reviewed, with several of these simulated to find the most appropriate demodulation scheme for this application. This included the development of a new detection scheme. A test system using Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques was constructed.

Kayamba, Mwanja. "Female entrepreneurs' cellular phone habits in Zambia and South Africa." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2313.

Full text
Abstract:
1 online resource (viii, 155 leaves)
This study explores the ways in which female entrepreneurs in Zambia and South Africa use their cellular phones, as well as their interests and needs in using this technology. The findings in this study are therefore crucial to the body of knowledge on programmes that seek to uplift women's lives through the deployment of ICTs, since current policies do not make full provision for the use of mobile phones in female entrepreneurship. Information on female entrepreneurs and cellular phones was collected in the literature review. The scrutiny of various literature sources and the analysis of the responses from the interviews with the female entrepreneurs were carried out to arrive at answers to the following research questions: 1. Can telecommunications (specifically, cellular phones) increase the participation of women in the economy? 2. What are the consumer habits of female entrepreneur cellular phone users in Zambia and South Africa? 3. Are the communication needs of business women in Zambia and South Africa adequately met? 4. What are the obstacles that female entrepreneurs in Zambia and South Africa face in the use of cellular phones? 5. What are the similarities and differences in the consumer habits of female entrepreneur cellular phone users in Zambia and South Africa? In order to gather information on the consumer habits of female entrepreneurs in Zambia and South Africa, a survey was conducted of 100 female entrepreneurs. The female entrepreneurs identified in this survey consist of female business owners with no more than 50 employees each, from Gauteng Province in South Africa, and Lusaka Province in Zambia. The female entrepreneurs were identified through the accidental sampling technique, and a structured questionnaire was used to collect information from them. The findings of the investigation reveal that cellular phones have the potential to increase the participation of women in mainstream economic activity, since they are a useful means of communication that allow women from diverse backgrounds to communicate easily for both business and social purposes. Accordingly, national policy-makers in South Africa and Zambia need to investigate further the potential of using cellular phone or similar technology to empower small-scale businesswomen. The investigation also shows that the cellular phone consumer habits of female entrepreneurs in Zambia and South Africa differ when it comes to using cellular phones for business and social communication purposes. More Zambian women indicated that they use their cellular phones in business operations, while South African women showed a tendency to use their phones more for social purposes. The results of this investigation further illustrate that despite the importance in value which the mobile phone has for women entrepreneurs in both Zambia and South Africa, the communication needs of women's entrepreneurship are not adequately met. The main obstacles in meeting the communication needs of female entrepreneurs in Zambia and South Africa are inadequate network coverage and high prices. The study shows that a number of women (52,2%) indicated that they are inhibited from effective communication services and therefore resort to borrowing other people's mobile phones. The lack of empirical studies on the use of telecommunications by female entrepreneurs in both Zambia and South Africa attests to the fact that women's entrepreneurship is still an area that requires in-depth investigation. If various development efforts are to meet their targets, clearly the area of women's entrepreneurship and how various ICTs such as cellular phones are used therein needs urgent investigation.

Abstract:
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a modern fleet management system in improving the logistics of transporting staff, goods and materials in Kenya Power & Lighting Company, a utility firm in power distribution. In today’s competitive marketplace which is characterised by rapidly changing business requirements, leveraging leading edge technologies and adopting best practices are essential in order to ensure sound logistical support that guarantees both effectiveness and efficiency in the transportation processes. The sampling procedure of one-stage, cluster sampling and the use of the simple random sampling technique were used in this study to select a sample size which was sufficiently representative of the whole population. Both the descriptive study approach and the survey research strategy were adopted to enable the collection of data in a manner that allowed in-depth examination while gathering information that explained the relationships between constructs, in particular, cause and effect relationships. The main purpose of this dissertation was therefore to establish that the use of information technology is feasible in transport industries, explain possible obstacles and also any major advantages of its implementation. Secondly, as regards the theoretical aspect, a broadened view on the use of online tracking for vehicles using a global positioning system is presented, together with practical examples, to illustrate its successful implementation in a fleet management system. The study concludes by offering suggestions and recommendations from the research results and the researcher’s experiences for future studies.

Abstract:
Advancements in virtual reality (VR) technologies have led to overwhelming critique and acclaim in recent years. Academic researchers have already begun to take advantage of these immersive technologies across all manner of settings. Using immersive technologies, educators are able to more easily interpret complex information with students and colleagues. Despite the advantages these technologies bring, some drawbacks still remain. One particular drawback is the difficulty of engaging in immersive environments with others in a shared physical space (i.e., with a shared virtual environment). A common strategy for improving collaborative data exploration has been to use technological substitutions to make distant users feel they are collaborating in the same space. This research, however, is focused on how virtual reality can be used to build upon real-world interactions which take place in the same physical space (i.e., collaborative, co-located, multi-user virtual reality).

In this study we address two primary dimensions of collaborative data visualization and analysis as follows: [1] we detail the implementation of a novel co-located VR hardware and software system, [2] we conduct a formal user experience study of the novel system using the NASA Task Load Index (Hart, 1986) and introduce the Modified User Experience Inventory, a new user study inventory based upon the Unified User Experience Inventory, (Tcha-Tokey, Christmann, Loup-Escande, Richir, 2016) to empirically observe the dependent measures of Workload, Presence, Engagement, Consequence, and Immersion. A total of 77 participants volunteered to join a demonstration of this technology at Purdue University. In groups ranging from two to four, participants shared a co-located virtual environment built to visualize point cloud measurements of exploded supernovae. This study is not experimental but observational. We found there to be moderately high levels of user experience and moderate levels of workload demand in our results. We describe the implementation of the software platform and present user reactions to the technology that was created. These are described in detail within this manuscript.
