This thesis investigates the feasibility of deploying mobile communication networks at the THz frequency range. Three areas were identified as the major issues on the way towards realising a functional THz mobile communication system: the high atmospheric attenuation levels and obstacle shadowing at the THz range, the deficiency in THz devices suitable for mobile telecommunications and the availability of reliable models for the analysis and design of THz radio networks.

Abstract:

Market information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape 
Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market 
information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo
requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype 
consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such 
as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

This is the eighth workshop to be organised under the postgraduate programmes in electrical and electronic engineering (EEE). The workshop concludes the Research Seminar Series, which has provided a platform for disseminating the latest research activities in related technologies through its weekly seminars. The EEE courses cover a broad range of technologies and this is reflected in the variety of topics presented during the workshop. In total, thirty-three papers have been selected for the proceedings, which have been divided into seven sections. The workshop aims to be as close to a `real¿ event as possible. Hence, authors have responded to a Call for Papers with an abstract, prior to the submission of the final paper. This has been a novel experience for many, if not all of the contributors. Clearly, authors have taken up the challenge with enthusiasm, resulting in what promises to be an interesting and informative workshop.

In recent years, mobile communications has become very popular and the demand for its services has increased dramatically. The capacity of mobile communication systems is mainly limited by co-channel interference caused by frequency reuse. The acceptable co-channel interference at the receiver determines the minimum allowable distance between adjacent co-channel users and hence the system capacity. One approach to increase the capacity is to employ co-channel interference resistant receivers. The research work presented in this thesis deals with the designing of such receivers for cellular mobile communication systems.

Persistently Present argues that we need to more fully reassess our thinking about the relationship(s) between social connectedness and technologically mediated forms of communication (particularly social-mobile technologies). Noting that contemporary social life is marked by connections that are more flexible, accessible, negotiable, and persistent because communication opportunities are nearly constant, I argue that social-mobile technologies are shifting and reconfiguring the ways that students build and maintain their social relationships. Within this environment social-mobile technologies are effectively serving as tools of social extensibility , allowing individuals to expand, enhance, and extend their social presence. As a result, these technologies are altering the when, where, and how (contexts) of contemporary connectedness and interactions. The concept of social extensibility is investigated across four important and interdependent areas that emerged in my data and the related literature: connectivity, virtual spaces, non-spaces, and expressiveness.

Abstract:
A mathematical formulation is developed for systematic tracking of the random movement of a mobile station in a cellular environment. It incorporates mobility parameters under generalized conditions, so that the model could be tailored to be applicable in most cellular environments. This model is then used to characterisendifferent mobility-related traffic parameters in a cellular system. These include the cell residence time of both new and handover calls, channel holding time and the average number of handovers per call. It is shown that the cell residence time can be described by the generalized gamma distribution, while the channel holding time can be best approximated by the negative exponential distribution. Based on these findings a teletraffic model that takes the user mobility into account is presented and is substantiated using a computer simulation. Further, the influence of cell size on new and handover call blocking probabilities is examined. The effect of the handover channel reservation on call dropout probability is also examined to determine the optimum number of reserved channels required for handover. Improvement to handover performance is investigated in terms of reduction in the number of unnecessary handovers as well as reduction in handover delay time. For this purpose an analytical method is developed which determines the optimum hysteresis level and the signal averaging time under shadow fading. The results are applicable in both micro- and macro-cellular systems.
