Abstract:
21st Century Foresight offers a comprehensive study of ‘foresight’ as an instrument of policy. It covers the development of foresight methodology, the design of foresight activities and their evaluation. The thesis is based on eleven publications collectively making significant contributions to knowledge about global foresight practices and applications in different domains (i.e. research areas and socio-economic sectors). New conceptual frameworks developed include the Foresight Diamond, the SMART Futures Jigsaw and the Methods Combination Matrix (MCM), which can be used as tools for futures research, practical work in the design and management of forward-looking activities and knowledge transfer on foresight. The thesis shows both generalised and specific contributions to knowledge. The former is best demonstrated with the development of a “fully-fledged evaluation” framework with twenty criteria, the identification of critical factors influencing the selection of foresight methods (e.g. geo-R&D context) and the use of network analysis techniques in foresight. The latter is prominent throughout the thesis with examples including the results of particular evaluations and the profiles of foresight practices in Europe and Latin America. A prevailing theme is the use of mapping and benchmarking approaches to evaluate foresight practices and reveal a more detailed understanding of the impacts of foresight in science, technology and innovation systems. The theoretical contributions (e.g. using exploratory research and catastrophe theory) are complemented with a set of practical instruments providing methodological basis and guidelines for increasing the efficiency and outcome of foresight and horizon scanning activities. Overall, the thesis demonstrates original contributions to five distinct yet interconnected areas of knowledge: foresight methodology; foresight practices in Europe and the world; foresight in Latin America; foresight evaluation; and the evaluation of national technology foresight programmes. The various approaches used to frame the morphology of foresight – supported with evidence, comparisons and evaluations – are the main contributions to knowledge.

Abstract:
Materials with potential for high temperature inorganic pigment applications (e.g. ceramics) have been synthesised using solid state methods and characterised using powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, magic angle spinning NMR, Mossbauer spectroscopy, UVNis spectroscopy and colour measurement techniques. A number of compounds containing tin (H) and niobium (V) have been modified and doped with various constituents to tailor and widen the colour properties of the bright yellow parent phases. The dark yellow (L*(91.28), a*(13.74), b*(54.76)) tin niobium oxide pyrochlores have been re-characterised using neutron diffraction techniques. These materials exhibit both cation and anion disorder caused by a stereoactive lone pair on the tin (H) metal centres. Solid state NMR and Mossbauer studies have shown the presence of tin (IV) on a symmetric site within the primary phase of the pure oxide pyrochlore and methods have been investigated to minimise the tin (H) disproportion method from where the tin (IV) is derived.

Abstract:
Interactive surfaces are a growing trend in many domains. As one possible manifestation of Mark Weiser’s vision of ubiquitous and disappearing computers in everywhere objects, we see touchsensitive screens in many kinds of devices, such as smartphones, tablet computers and interactive tabletops. More advanced concepts of these have been an active research topic for many years. This has also influenced automotive cockpit development: concept cars and recent market releases show integrated touchscreens, growing in size. To meet the increasing information and interaction needs, interactive surfaces offer context-dependent functionality in combination with a direct input paradigm. However, interfaces in the car need to be operable while driving. Distraction, especially visual distraction from the driving task, can lead to critical situations if the sum of attentional demand emerging from both primary and secondary task overextends the available resources. So far, a touchscreen requires a lot of visual attention since its flat surface does not provide any haptic feedback. There have been approaches to make direct touch interaction accessible while driving for simple tasks. Outside the automotive domain, for example in office environments, concepts for sophisticated handling of large displays have already been introduced. Moreover, technological advances lead to new characteristics for interactive surfaces by enabling arbitrary surface shapes. In cars, two main characteristics for upcoming interactive surfaces are largeness and shape. On the one hand, spatial extension is not only increasing through larger displays, but also by taking objects in the surrounding into account for interaction. On the other hand, the flatness inherent in current screens can be overcome by upcoming technologies, and interactive surfaces can therefore provide haptically distinguishable surfaces. This thesis describes the systematic exploration of large and shaped interactive surfaces and analyzes their potential for interaction while driving. Therefore, different prototypes for each characteristic have been developed and evaluated in test settings suitable for their maturity level. Those prototypes were used to obtain subjective user feedback and objective data, to investigate effects on driving and glance behavior as well as usability and user experience. As a contribution, this thesis provides an analysis of the development of interactive surfaces in the car. Two characteristics, largeness and shape, are identified that can improve the interaction compared to conventional touchscreens. The presented studies show that large interactive surfaces can provide new and improved ways of interaction both in driver-only and driver-passenger situations. Furthermore, studies indicate a positive effect on visual distraction when additional static haptic feedback is provided by shaped interactive surfaces. Overall, various, non-exclusively applicable, interaction concepts prove the potential of interactive surfaces for the use in automotive cockpits, which is expected to be beneficial also in further environments where visual attention needs to be focused on additional tasks.

Since the collapse of Japan's so called "bubble economy" in the early 1990s, Japanese banks have struggled to recover their former strength, facing an unprecedented amount of bad debts. Although major banks seem to have passed a toughest period in terms of bad debts, the new environment requires them to fight in more competitive markets, where foreign financial institutions and other new entrants are active. Recent announcements of large mergers show that Japanese banking industry is now in the middle of restructuring in order to survive in the face of tougher competition and to develop sustainable competitiveness. Their style in managing business is also changing by adopting U.S. model. This thesis studies the changing environment, which includes the change of economy, society, regulations, human resource etc. It examines the restructuring of banking industry in Japan, taking examples such as Mizuho Financial Group. Finally, I try to propose a direction which they should take toward the 21st century.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2004.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 121-128).
Public authorities and private developers around the world are attempting to create and sustain hubs within the innovation-based economy by fostering successful urban environments. These large-scale developments succeed an earlier generation of post-industrial "technopoles" named after the French word popularized by Castells and Hall in Technopoles of the World (1994). In the 1990s, most planned technopoles resembled suburban office environments with generous landscaping, wide roads, and automobile-focused circulation systems. In contrast, today's economic development experts are increasingly emphasizing the need for interaction and cross-fertilization among companies and institutions in an attempt to foster innovation, from which successful communities are assumed to derive their competitive edge in an information- based economy. Parallel shifts in live-work patterns among creative talent groups are being documented in social science and anecdotal observations. These trends have heightened competition for qualified individuals and initiated a talent war among cities globally. And these individuals are living footloose lifestyles supported by mobile devices and wireless connectivity. Entrepreneurial public agencies and private developers have recognized the potential for reconceiving live-work environments as economic hubs. These holistic projects are identified as 21st century technopoles because they directly address and capitalize on the socio-economic shifts described above leading to vastly different ideal urban configurations. The thesis asks how urban form is expected to contribute to innovation; and, how urban form is being reconceptualized in turn at the neighborhood scale.
(cont.) Four case studies provide a rich narrative that begins to sketch the range of proposed urban developments: Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Digital Media City, Seoul, Korea; one-north, Singapore; Lower Manhattan, New York. A narrative ties the four cases together providing "thick descriptions" as a base-line study for a new mode of technopole development. The analysis reaches from (1) "hardware" or the urban built environment and (2) "wiring" or the embedded and supported technologies to (3) "software" or the actors involved. The case studies indicate several emergent themes that are rescripting our urban environments. Dense urban zones with a high level of sensory diversity are being proposed for emerging technopoles that capitalize on the city as a metaphor for human interaction and exchange. Real estate value in this system is measured by the number of serendipitous encounters it facilitates. The dichotomous relationship between spaces of places and spaces of flows set forth by Castells seems inapplicable within the boundaries of these zones that are at once core and periphery, local and global. Finally, these developments are living laboratories for the technologies that support new live-work preferences and shifting lifestyles. Several contradictions become apparent in delving more deeply into the examples, which are still under development. In the promotional materials, diversity - demographic and physical - is embraced, but it is not clear how it will contribute to innovation. More generally, the projects plan for often unpredictable "knowledge accidents." ...

There is considerable research on concepts of Blackness in America. Much of this research is conducted within a Eurocentric as opposed to an Afrocentric perspective. Social research has established that ideals, social norms, and values about Black minority groups may be shaped by dominant culture premises and that the dominant culture of any society can influence the attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors of minority group members coexisting within that culture. The White racial frame holds that over time a dominant cultural perspective in the U.S. has installed a positive orientation to “White” and whiteness and a strong negative orientation toward racial “others”, particularly toward Black Americans. The present research explores this phenomenon from an Afrocentric perspective, assessing propinquity preferences of non-native Immigrant and native-born American Blacks toward native-born Blacks. Utilizing data drawn from The National Survey on American Life 2001-2003 (Jackson, 2007) the study assessed the degree of Black propinquity (i.e., self-identified feelings of closeness and identity preferences with native-born Blacks) expressed within and between subsamples of native-born African American (n = 3,464) and non-native (chiefly Afro-Caribbean) Blacks (n = 1,118). More specifically, it hypothesized that native-born Blacks would display greater propinquity preferences than Immigrant Blacks for native-American Blacks depicted as more economically-challenged as well as socially affluent and elite; also, it expected they would report greater support for socially undesirable as well as socially desirable Blacks than would Immigrant Blacks. A series of hierarchical regression analyses modeled the unique and joint predictive variance of socio-demographic, socio-economic, and Black (derived) target characteristics within each Black subpopulation against the primary outcome variable (propinquity). Overall regression models for each Black group were highly similar in the proportion of explained variance (27% for native Blacks; 26% for Immigrant Blacks) and weighted contributions of three blocks of variables; derived variables for Black target characteristics contributed most of the total variance within each group. No statistically reliable differences for R score values were found between the two Black subpopulations on these derived variables. Findings are discussed in the context of the White racial frame perspective, secondary data methodology, and future research.

Information retrieval is an important component for a logical understanding of the meaning of the product, as well as its use in creating design and emotional impact on the buyer. Before creating any sketches, you need to understand the market of competitors on this topic and the target audience. Next, determine what impression the product should make on a person to want to buy the product? The product should be clear, because the buyer needs 15-60 seconds to determine the first, often basic, impression of interest or indifference to the product. Clear design is, graphically executed, answers to the first questions in a person's head. The information provided by the packaging design is parallel to the flow of ideas that are concretized in a single logical direction. It is important to give a person exactly what he needs - then the buyer's decision will be quick and confident, and the product will be remembered. Brand identity is a special identity of a specific product that is difficult to apply to any other packaging. You can use coloring, illustrations, original fonts or materials as a tool for attracting attention ... The point is that the product seems absolutely simple and easy to remember by its design. And this does not mean that everything is really simple, the complexity of the design is to create a unique design, looking at which you will understand how simple and logical it is for this product, so it is irrelevant to use for anything else. It is important that the first impression of the product is a fully harmonious picture, reflected in a single style. In the design of a unique package there should be a scheme, a plan, or a perfect reconstruction of the structures of the composition - this is when the package states everything and almost nothing. Focusing on the important internal components of the design, it is necessary to mention the actual affiliation of the design to the product within the present. The goal: to create a product that will reveal its individuality in the 21st century and the probability of being at the current pace in 20 years. An effective way to incorporate design into the present is to use fashion trends and tendencies, such as smart design elements such as QR codes. How to leave all the necessary information on the package, and illustrate the additional message with a QR-code to go to the site for a more detailed acquaintance with the product.

Following the French expedition to Egypt in 1798 the centuries old distribution of power in the middle east was turned upside down. As European supremacy grew a group of Egyptian intellectuals banded together and formed a reactionary movement called “The Muslim Brotherhood”. They aimed to reform society without surrendering religious customs and what ensued was an intellectual battle for national identity that quickly transformed into an armed resistance. The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, is the world’s most influential Islamist organization. The mission of the Brotherhood is to Islamize society by promoting religious laws, values and morals. To achieve this goal, it has long combined preaching and political activism with social welfare. The group gained legitimacy among its main constituency, the lower middle class, as the most effective organized resistance against the British occupation of Egypt (1882–1952). The Muslim Brotherhood allied itself with the Free Officers, nationalist military leaders who sought to snatch Egypt into a British-backed monarchy. After the coup that forced King Farouk to lose power in July 1952, the Military Junta, which took over the leadership and the Brotherhood, became rivals. This conflict revolved around power and ideology; The Brotherhood rejected the vision of the Egyptian military as the leader of the socialist, secular, pan-Arab movement. In 1954, a suspected member of the Brotherhood attempted to assassinate Free Officer leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. In response, thousands of suspected brothers were imprisoned.Although Nasser banned the group from governing, the Brotherhood nevertheless became ubiquitous in society, building allegiance as a populist alternative to the Egyptian state, which provided neither prosperity nor prosperity and suffered repeated military defeats by Israel.

This study focused on the perceptions of six superintendents regarding the state of the profession as of 2012, and it reports their thoughts and suggestions as to what preparation is needed by superintendents for the 21st century. The participating superintendents, who were all members of the Western States Benchmarking Consortium, were employed in six school districts in five states. Data were collected through surveys and telephone interviews. The findings of this study clearly indicate a lack of cohesion between what superintendents learned in their university professional preparation programs and what they practice in their day to day activities. The superintendents involved in this study tended to favor a hybrid approach – rigorous theoretical insight grounded in real world practice. Since superintendents typically spend a good deal of their time solving challenging problems including funding shortfalls, competition from other educational institutions, and the constant scrutiny of the media; their preparation needs to provide opportunities to develop their leadership skills and solve real world problems in an environment where they can take risks. Mentoring and participation in professional consortiums were recommended as key elements for the preparation of the twenty-first century superintendent. This study contributes to the discussion of how to best prepare school leaders for the current and future demands of superintendency.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines the preservation practices of academic law libraries and argues that the survey results illustrate the growing gap between current preservation practices and new technology. The introduction to the study discusses challenges for libraries and cultural institutions in the digital age. In the second section, the paper analyzes U.S. copyright law and the effect of recent amendments on library preservation activities. The third section reports the results of a preservation practices survey. In the fourth section, the paper explores options for future law library preservation including institutional repositories and collaborative preservation efforts. The paper concludes that a new approach to scholarship and preservation is necessary to ensure that future generations have access to historically important legal literature.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore with community college presidents of 292 Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Level 1 institutions their perceptions as to the extent to which selected leadership styles presently required in the performance of presidential duties may be required in the future. Also investigated were leadership succession planning and professional development initiatives aimed at identifying and developing future leaders. A total of 209 (71.6%) presidents completed a researcher designed survey. Data analysis resulted in the following major findings. The presidents indicated a high level of support for each of the five leadership styles for current presidents as well as for future leaders. A consultative style of leadership was deemed to be the most important form of leadership for current leaders and increasing in importance for future leaders. Participative leadership was ranked second and could be considered as a transitional alternative for new presidents. The delegative and negotiative leadership styles were cited as the third and fourth most important forms of leadership for current and future leaders. Fifth ranked was the directive or autocratic style of leadership. Three-fourths of community college presidents indicated that they were actively engaged in the identification and development of potential leaders. Presidents were highly supportive of six developmental areas (budgeting, financial management, fund raising, governing boards, internal governance, and politics/relationships) but perceived politics and relationships as being the most critical area of development for future presidents. Presidents, with less than 10 years of service, were more actively engaged in identifying potential future leaders than their longer tenured counterparts. Those planning to retire within the next 6 years indicated the highest level of engagement. Institutional leaders who had been identified for advancement in a succession plan during their careers were more likely to have a succession plan in place in their institution; however, succession planning was largely informal.

Abstract:
There are several models that can be found describing the organizational buying process. The organizational buying process (OBP) within B2B is also more complex and more time consuming than within B2C (Dwyer & Tanner Jr., 2002). The OBP is also continuously becoming more complex as new touchpoints are created through the rise of new communication channels (Mora Cortez & Johnston, 2017). Touchpoints are essentially places where the customer encounters the supplier (Moncrief & Marshall, 2005). These new communication channels and touchpoints have made the customer experience more important, although the customer experience is not yet well integrated into the OBP (Mora Cortez & Johnston, 2017). Social media is one of the new communication channels that has grown the last decade and has become important also for the OBP (Oyza & M. Edwin, 2015) With social media, companies have less control over the information online and social media is affecting companies in all industries (Kaplan and Haenlein, 2010). Despite some initial studies regarding social media, the effect they have on the OBP is still not well understood. The aim of this master thesis has therefore been to better understand how social media is affecting the OBP in terms of lead-time and win-rate. Win-rate can be used to measure sales success and is the percentage of the opportunities that the supplier won (Schultz, 2016). Through this case study, several semi-structured interviews were performed with both employees of the case study company and their customers. The data collected was thereafter analyzed through a thematic analysis resulting in various codes aligned under three main themes. The findings showed that LinkedIn was one of the main social media used. LinkedIn makes it easier to map out stakeholders and thereby also find new business opportunities through more quality leads. Within social media, targeted marketing was used toward selected organizations. With this said, social media has in different ways helped the company find more quality leads, influence the customer and also helped strengthen the brand of the company.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the following questions: What might a 21st century expressionist art criticism consist of? How does such a mode of “art writing” relate to oppositional strategies often employed by certain artists challenging the boundaries traditionally separating art from writing? What role does the body play in such a model of writing? What role might fiction play in an expressionist art criticism? The intended outcome is to render a new model of writing “in the expanded field,” to borrow Rosalind Krauss’s phrase. The essays and pieces of writing comprising this dissertation have been organized into four sections. The first part, “Bad Writing,” lays the groundwork for the three stylistic modes of expressionist art criticism that follow: the Expressionist Essay, Ficto-criticism, and Object-Oriented Writing. Prefaces before each section elaborate the conceptual thinking involved in arriving at each particular designation, as well as the positioning of each mode in the overall conception of a 21st century expressionist art criticism. This thesis begins with the argument that art criticism must first and foremost be understood as a literary art form. This is an issue of intentionality that must be asserted at the outset, one that resonates with John Dewey’s notion of criticism’s re-creative and imaginative aim. It is one of the essential qualities that distinguishes art criticism from the art historical endeavor. I contend that the practice of art criticism is an art form in and of itself, one that, following the poet-critic model (or, more aptly, anti-model) advanced by Baudelaire and Apollinaire, is essentially complementary to the art object. This complementarity is what the task of an expressionist art criticism hopes to achieve. Thus, this thesis should be considered as an example of an art writing practice in the context of a thesis-based dissertation.

Abstract:
Abstract Community Learning Centers (CLC) provide extended learning opportunities for students and families that live in fiscally under-resourced communities. These centers provide opportunities for academic enrichment. This includes an array of additional services, programs, and activities. The programs should be designed to reinforce and complement the academic program of participating students and provide the families of students with opportunities for dynamic and meaningful engagement in the education of the child. Significant research has been done on the effectiveness of community learning centers but little research has been conducted on the formative process for establishing programming for a community learning center. This formative evaluation provided key stakeholders with a unique insight into the program. To accomplish this, the evaluator used Robert E. Stake’s Responsive Evaluation Approach to design a constant-comparative qualitative program evaluation. The evaluation engaged in an analysis that identified the perceived program components. Insight from the analysis will be used to formulate a Theory of Change for the CLC. The Theory of Change process pivots upon identifying the essential program components and establishing the sufficient conditions required to bring about a given long term outcome. The formulation of a Theory of Change will assist with establishing programming, resource building (i.e., grant, monetary solicitation), external program collaborations and potential expansion.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to introduce ideas and methods from the emerging field of digital humanities into the study of history of mathematics, through case studies relating to the role of correspondence, commu- nication, and collaboration in Leonhard Euler's mathematical practice. Euler's known correspondence numbers almost three thousand letters, exchanged with hundreds of correspondents from across Europe. The correspondence is a vital source for understanding Euler's mathem- atics, but it has not yet been examined in great detail; this thesis is a contribution towards such a study. The thesis is motivated by a case study which highlights the cent- ral role of correspondence and personal contact in Euler's work on continued fractions. A desire for better understanding of the corres- pondence leads to the use of methods from the digital humanities, a relatively young field which has been evolving rapidly since the begin- ning of the 21st century. The thesis considers the particular challenges encountered when using such methods in the study of eighteenth- century mathematical texts. A database is used to facilitate the explor- ation and comprehension of Euler's correspondence. This enables the identification of a corpus of letters, all connected with the same math- ematical topic, which would be suitable for further study. A prototype digital edition of one of these letters is presented, featuring a tran- scription, editorial annotations, and digital facsimiles of the original manuscript. Finally, it is shown how existing digital tools that were designed for use in other fields, such as mathematics and cartography, may be appropriated to aid understanding of primary sources in the history of mathematics.

Abstract:
My thesis explores the effect of tourism and the opportunities it is providing for Nepalese women who are actively looking for waged, high skilled, high status employment. These jobs include but are not limited to trekking guides, hotel/guesthouse managers, and upper level management positions, both within and outside of the tourism sector. I am focusing on women whose education and skill levels enable them to seek jobs above low skill, low status employment, such as farm workers and low level clerical staff. I am studying the shifts in Nepalese society that enable a specific market to emerge for participation for educated and ambitious women, and if such a shift is happening, whether or not Nepalese women are taking advantage of this opportunity to lead the way toward gender equity.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the political euphemisms that are used in the English newspapers of the 21st century and analyse their semantic and structural features. First of all, different views on euphemisms were presented to demonstrate attitudes of various scholars towards the same phenomenon. Euphemisms were approached from semantic, structural, and pragmatic points of view. The research question was to be answered in the study was as follows: what are typical political euphemisms used in the current English newspapers and what are their underlying semantic and structural features? The material for the analysis was taken from the online English newspaper The Guardian. This newspaper was selected on the basis of its popularity and accessibility to the readers. The methods used in this study were descriptive method and content analysis. The research emerged from the qualitative perspective as the analysis focused on the meaning found in certain situations. In the study political euphemisms were divided into nine semantic groups depending on the semantic topics of articles they appeared in and examined from semantic and structural points of view. The former approach dealt with semantic transformations while the latter focused on types of word-building presented in Warren‘s model. The research proved that the usage of euphemisms was characteristic of political texts but their number was relatively limited. One and the same political euphemism were found in... [to full text]
• Eufemizmai atlieka penkias pragmatines funkcijas: mandagumo, tabu... Abstract:
This study examines the industrial geography of Kuwait and its role in the development of the nation as an oil rich,. Arab, Moslem, independent state in a desert environment, with a small area and a rapidly growing, population, investing heavily in modern manufacturing and occupying a strategic position at the head of the Gulf of Arabia. Kuwait has several characteristics, the study of which will make an important contribution to industrial geography and especially to an understanding of the nature and impact of modern large scale industrial development in a region which is a major source of the oil and gas needed by the rest of the world. In this way the study has global significance. A more narrow aim of the study is to contribute to an understanding of the part played by manufacturing industry in the urban and economic geography of small states in the Arab world, and in particular those in the oil rich Arab countries. In the oil rich countries it is taking on a particular character related to the situation where, unlike the rest of the developing world, they are capital rich but have limited labour resources. Kuwait is interesting because the government recognized the need for manufacturing development as early as 1952 and considerable success has already been achieved through the promotion of industrial development ever since. The Government of Kuwait has committed itself to encouraging and developing the industrial sector within the framework of its overall development plans. The government has also aimed at diversifying the sources of its national revenue so that it will not be solely dependent on the national oil resources. It has therefore taken a number of important initiatives in this regard, among which is the establishment of industrial areas and providing them with the necessary vital utilities for the attraction and accommodation of industries. The heavy dependence on oil, the limited opportunities in agriculture, and the dependence of trade and services on the export base of oil, made manufacturing the single most important avenue for widening the Kuwaiti economic base and reducing the risk and vulnerabilities associated with specialization in oil production and export and the heavy dependence on investments abroad.

Abstract:

“Mysticism,” according to the Oxford dictionary, can be defined as “belief in or devotion to the spiritual apprehension of truths inaccessible to the intellect.” More generally, it applies to the aspects of spirituality and religion that can only be directly experienced, rather than described or learned. This dissertation examines how mysticism fits into the aesthetic, compositional, and musical philosophies of four prominent composers of the 20th and 21st centuries—Ernest Bloch, Olivier Messiaen, Sophia Gubaidulina, and John Zorn, with a cameo by the Jewish composer David Finko—and how their engagement with the concept of mysticism and the mystical experience can be seen in a selection of their works featuring the violin: Bloch's Baal Shem suite and Poème mystique; Finko's Lamentations of Jeremiah, Zorn's Kol Nidre, Goetia, All Hallow's Eve, and Amour fou; Gubaidulina's In tempus praesens; and Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. These works exemplify the mysticism shared by these composers, despite their different religious and cultural backgrounds, particularly their belief in the transcendental nature of music. This belief is expressed in their works through programmatic, melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal elements, all of which display, to a greater or lesser degree, the influence of mystical philosophy and symbolism.

Abstract:
Taking the legacy of 20th-century poetry as a starting point - from the Modernist movement through João Cabral de Melo Neto up to the poetry of the `90s - this thesis analyzes the works of poets born in 1975 or later who published their first books in the 21st century, attempting to map out the early stirrings of Brazilian poetry in the new millennium.
