For centuries, France was a global powerhouse, permeating its will over five continents. Since those imperial days, it has lost considerable ground in its former domains. Only in Africa did France retain its hold, owing to the monetary system that was put in place. In the decade after World War II, President François Mitterand was quoted saying: “Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century.” Like a foretelling coming true, it is precisely because of Africa that modern-day France is returning as the global force it once was. And it’s using the soft power attributes of language to cement its hegemony. Starting in the 1990s, the constructs that melded the francophone nations started to show signs of decay. The African youth grew disenfranchised with France’s ceaseless interventions in their socio-political base. It was clear that the French policies were out of touch with the reality on the ground. Although most of the older generation of Africans still viewed Paris as a guardian of sorts, the younger generation, to whom the torch of leadership passed, held more critical views of France and looked to China and the United States for new opportunities. On the other hand, France is now adjusting the way it maintains power in Africa, not through force or finances but by language .

Keynote address at A-LIEP 2006.
The article scans global and library trends to discuss the future of 21st century libraries. In spite of both the importance and difficulty of addressing the future of libraries, there has been no shortage of attempts to do so. The author draws insights from leading futurist to articulate the relevance of libraries in Singapore. Libraries are important in the context of the evolving experience economy in capturing tacit knowledge and understanding learning patterns. The author posits that library education in the future would have to incorporate both tacit and explicit knowledge management.

Abstract:
On December 1, 2000 a new administration took over the presidency of MeÌ xico. This event was especially anticipated because the new president, Vicente Fox, was coming from a different party than the PRI, the old official party. The arrival of President Fox brought important changes in the way of governing; with the moral obligation to be different, since the beginning of his administration one of the main goals was incline to pursue a more dynamic participation by Mexico in the political issues of the world. This was to be accomplished by taking up several measures that included enhancing economic trade with the United States and other nations, world summits in Mexico, improvement of human rights and others. Among those plans one attracted special attention when Mexico asked for a seat as a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council for the period 2002-2003 the third time in Mexican history. There were divided opinions on the subject because Mexico would be directly involved in UN decisions concerning internal situations of other countries, something that goes against the foreign policy principles of MeÌ xico. Eventually this discussion opened doors for other topics; one of them was the possibility of Mexico participating actively in peacekeeping operations by sending troops overseas; this initiated a biter debate in the political sphere. This study analyzes Mexican Foreign Policy and the historical perspective of the foreign principles stated in the Mexican Constitution[alpha]s article 89, followed by a discussion of their influence and interpretation in the politicalmilitary environment before and during the administration of President Fox. The study includes the analysis includes the new social and political scenario that MeÌ xico is facing in order to determine the odds and obstacles when dealing with military participation overseas. As MeÌ xico takes its place in the community of nations, the country[alpha]s leadership needs to search for possible options and test whether the new Mexican political apparatus has the flexibility to address current threats and requirements for international security. An analysis on the capabilities of the Mexican Armed Forces is also necessary in order to determine their capacity to execute multinational operations. Finally bring out the real benefits and/or risks from getting Mexico involved in these kinds of operations are identified.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis seeks to understand how institutional paths emerge, theoretically and empirically. Taking the case of the European automobile industry and culture it revisits how path dependency can emerge historically (chapter 1) and theoretical patterns of path production (chapter 2). Based on qualitative research design (chapter 3), the case study identifies possibilities of path rupture through environmental conflicts in automobile history (chapter 4 and 5). It shows that through path ruptures and the emergence of new paths following new environmental requirements, 21st century automobility builds pluralistic and more heterogeneous semantic and organizational structures. Geographic and local conditions such as city planning and infrastructure matter in shaping vehicle use and culture in the future, as well does the distribution of decision making power on different political levels. Chapter 6summarize s and reflects the results of my micro-analytical study as parts of an emerging theory of path creation. If the analyzed trajectories of scenarios for the automobile sector become reality, either electrified automobility or electric multimodality, depends on whether they build a coherent narrative that ‘make sense’ of offer, demand and regulation in the sector. The case study showed that these coherent narratives can emerge when conflicts render visible already existing counter-narratives. These counter-narratives emerge in situations of crisis, such as when new environmental regulation determines technological development and behavioural adaptation in automobility. Once accepted, they create a new path – a new semantic and organizational structure in society

Abstract:
English
Ph.D.
In the latter half of the twentieth-century, fewer U. S. poets translated foreign poetry than their modernist predecessors. The scope of their translation projects correspondingly narrowed. Gone, for example, were projects like Ezra Pound's reaching back to thirteenth-century Italy to see how U. S. poets could push forward. Instead, translations of European and Latin American modernism prevailed. Often, multiple translations of the same author were produced by different translators at the expense of presenting a more well-rounded vision of national literatures. Of these translations, a surprisingly large number were of poets who were either loosely or explicitly connected to surrealism as a literary movement. This dissertation locates this explosion of interest in surrealism as an attraction to the surrealist emphasis on reconciling binaries. This emphasis allows American poets a convenient frame through which to confront the difficult questions of place and nation that arise as the U. S. position in the field of world literature shifts from periphery to core. Previous researchers have traced the history of surrealism's early reception in the United States, but these studies tend to not only focus on the movement's influence on American art, but also stop shortly after surrealist expatriates returned to Europe following WWII. This dissertation extends these approaches both by bringing the conversation up to the present and by examining the key role that translation and other forms of rewriting play in mediating the relationship between surrealism and American audiences. As surrealism enters the U. S. literary system, the transformed product is often not what one might expect. U. S. rewritings of surrealist literature are primarily carried out by poets and critics whose fundamental interest in the movement lies in finding a foreign mirror for their own aesthetic or ideological preoccupations. This in turn provokes the development of a strand of surrealist-influenced writing whose aims and goals are vastly different from those of the movement's founders.

Yates, A. ""Considering there's supposedly nothing wrong with me, it's not a life" : women's narratives of distress, visiting herbalists, and being well in the 21st century." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2016. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/9y599/-considering-there-s-supposedly-nothing-wrong-with-me-it-s-not-a-life-women-s-narratives-of-distress-visiting-herbalists-and-being-well-in-the-21st-century.

Abstract:
Distress can have a profoundly negative impact on the well-being of women (who are the main receivers of treatment for distress). Distress also poses a huge financial problem for the United Kingdom, the cost of which is predicted to reach over £26bn by 2026. A growing body of research has shown that various medicinal plants have potential to treat different aspects of distress. However, there is little research investigating the patient experience of western herbal practice (WHP), and none investigating women’s experiences of WHP for distress. In response, this longitudinal study utilised interviews with twenty-six women who were visiting herbalists for distress across the south-east of The United Kingdom to elicit their stories of distress, as well as their experiences of WHP. The narratives were analysed from a constructionist standpoint, using inductive thematic analysis. The participants’ narratives highlighted the profound impact of everyday distress, whilst feelings associated with distress (anxiety, low mood, isolation, shame and guilt) were frequently communicated via the use of metaphors. These negative feelings, often combined with unsuccessful biomedical encounters, frequently led to the women feeling desperate when first visiting a herbalist. The participants’ experiences of WHP showed that an accessible practitioner and good therapeutic relationship combined with flexible herbal treatment, allowed women with diverse stories of distress to overcome feelings of desperation. Ongoing support allowed the women to feel like they had a safety net as they journeyed from a place of distress, back into the wider world. These findings were supported by more unusual negative accounts, which showed how the herbal therapeutic process could be unsuccessful if elements were missing. This research is of significance as it helps to deepen our understanding of women’s experiences of distress – particularly perceptions of stigma which surround feelings of shame (linked to an inability to cope) and guilt (linked to the perceived impact of distress on others). The research also has relevance for WHP, as it highlights which positive aspects of WHP are of particular importance to women patients who are living with distress.

McEvoy, Carmel. "An inside view of the identity struggles of a member of a religious order in a changing culture from the late 1960's to the post Ryan report era in 21st century Ireland." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.682345.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an autoethnographic study, where the author, grappling with a sense of identity as a member of a religious order in the aftermath of the Ryan Report (Ryan, 2009), seeks to reconstruct a sense of self as a religious sister in 21st century Ireland. As a member of a group that for centuries were revered as carriers of Ireland's spiritual myths, and providers of education, health care and social services, the author struggles to find her place in a culture where attitudes towards religion, and in particular towards members of religious orders have hardened in the wake of revelations of the mistreatment of children uncovered in the Ryan Report (2009). Gripped by a sense of shock, dismay and embarrassment at the Report's catalogue of instances of abuse and neglect of children while in the care of religious orders between 1936 and 1993, the author is catapulted into a confused sense of self as a member of a religious order. It raises for her issues of identity as a spiritual and religious person. In an effort to re-story her identity as a member of a religious order, the writer sets out on a journey, backwards in time, as she traces her quest for spiritual meaning. The journey takes her to her earliest memory of a spiritual experience as a child of four or five, growing up in Catholic Ireland, to her experiences as a member of a religious congregation after the publication of the Ryan Report. The latter takes place against the backdrop of an Ireland that questions previously unquestioned "truths" as presented by the Catholic hierarchy who spoke with authority on social, political and religious issues. Since narrative or story telling is the primary way in which humans make meaning of their lives (Ricoeur, 1980; Bakhtin, 1981; Bruner, 1986) this study uses autoethnography as a narrative mode of inquiry, where the author accesses personal stories in search of a new understanding of self. This dissertation is not presented in the traditional format of chapters, but begins with an introduction setting out the focus of the research, followed by the main body of the work, which is presented as vignettes. The vignettes, in words and pictures, are used to map key memories and events that have shaped the author's identity as a member of a religious order. Each vignette is followed by a reflection that sometimes includes an engagement with literature and research to enhance the understanding of the cultural context of the particular vignette. This is followed by a narrative analysis and commentary. Progressing from one vignette to the next the author experiences struggle, pain and peace as she connects past and present in an evolving story of self that culminates in an acceptance of her wounded collective identity. In the concluding chapter, the author evaluates the research and reviews the autoethnographic journey, noting her emerging sense of identity within a culture from which she constantly seeks reassurance for the legitimacy of that identity.

Dudreuil, Lucie. "Revendications sociolinguistiques et identitaires de la population caribéenne au Costa Rica." Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016BOR30012.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the 20th century, Costa Rica built its own national identity on the “purity and whiteness” of the Costa Rican race. This is the identity paradigm in which the Jamaican population found itself upon arriving on the Caribbean coast in 1870 in order to work on the construction of railways and the banana plantations. This black, non-Spanish-speaking community was a barrier to the Costa Rican national identity project. However, the year 2015, marked a turning point. In virtue of an amendment to the first article of the Constitution, Costa Rica redefined itself as a “multiethnic, multicultural Republic”. This thesis retraces the complex process of integration undergone by the Costa Rican Afro-Caribbean community from 1870 to 2015. This study claims that the existence of this recent reconfiguration of the Costa Rican identity paradigm was in part fostered by one of the country’s most peripheral areas: Limon. The works of linguists such as Robert Le Page and André Tabouret-Keller have proven that linguistic choices can be considered as “identity claims or acts” by means of which a given speaker demonstrates his identity, his background and his aspirations. The people from Limon, by means of their sociolinguistic and identity claims, have thus helped start the aforementioned process of reconfiguration. The well-established use of Creole English clashes with the government’s official policy regarding the use of the official language of Spanish and the indigenous languages. Even though Creole English is spoken in Limon, in 2010 UNESCO classified it in its Atlas of the World’s Endangered Languages. Is there thus a campaign of revitalization in Costa Rica concerning Creole English? In an attempt to analyze the changing identity paradigm from an intersemiotic perspective, this study has chosen to focus on Caribbean literature and art as they both represent powerful mediums through which the expression of the Caribbean identity is portrayed and claimed

Abstract:
There are few documented cases and active programs of environmental education (EA) that support schools and teachers in their teaching for the care of the environment in the State of Guanajuato, Mexico. Two cases will be made in this research. The first, from 2001 to 2003, where the State Ecology Institute (IEEG) developed the project ‘Green School, the Agenda 21 of the educational center’, so that it addressed the needs of the schools in the field of EA, and they were helped and guided in the process of creating their own School Agenda 21, giving them training and the advice necessary to develop tools on environmental school promoters. The second case from the nineties, is currently lead by the Foundation of Support for children, Guanajuato Child A. C., which has developed an alternative model of sustainable child central development, and where there is an EA program for primary schools called ‘Friends of Nature’. The two cases are finally compared to give an assessment of their benefits

In recent years, the United States, China and other countries have paid unprecedented attention to public diplomacy This research focuses on China's“public diplomacyˮ strategy to further promote its international status and national image in the post cold war era. The rise of Chinese power is no longer a purely economic expansion, but includes the expansion of China’s political, military and economic development, and even threatens the international status of the United States and the international order. As China adopts the strategy of“peaceful developmentˮ, it deliberately maintains its low profile position and cooperates closely with the United States. China also has not challenged directly the USA's hegemony status. However, given that the US-China trade war has officially launched, US-China relations seem to be increasingly hostile. We have not yet seen that China has a well framed and explicit strategy to challenge the United States and to dominate the world order. On the contrary, China is focusing on economic and military expansion. China is also competing with the United States in the ideological field. Therefore, China promotes a “public diplomacyˮ strategy and strives to shape a benign national image to counter the "China threat theoryˮ as seen plausible by other countries. For example, when being questioned about China's ambition on global economic development, China argues that China's economic development is linked to economic globalization which aims to reduces its threat to other countries around the world. It is also easier for China to implement beneficial policies, and adopt a more peaceful approach when interacting with other countries. In conclusion, in the 21st century, China still needs to adhere to a path of peaceful development and adopt independent foreign policies. China could actively intervene in international affairs through a “public diplomacyˮ strategy, then play the role of regional peace keeper and promoter of global stability. This thesis first summarizes the system of China's construction of “public diplomacyˮ and the implementation of “public diplomacyˮ policies. It then discusses the influence and actual ramification of soft power, such as Chinese media propaganda and educational and cultural exchange activities that promote “public diplomacyˮ. Finally, it analyzes the effectiveness and evaluates China's “public diplomacyˮ and future constraints.

Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between Chinese domestic economic security and energy diplomacy. Due to China’s Communist political system, it is difficult to gauge the meaning of China’s modernization from statistical data. However, if we trace China’s economic development from the point of view of energy security, we can directly find structural problems and dilemmas in politics, economics and society. For a sovereign state, energy (oil、natural gas & coal) is not only a vital strategic resource, it is also the driving force of economic development. In order to satisfy China’s domestic energy demand, state energy diplomacy derived for energy import becomes ever more significant. Particularly in the world of globalization, how to ensure China’s energy security from disruption has become a key influential factor of international relations. Chinese energy demand has increased rapidly since the 1990s and since 1993, China has become a net importer of petroleum. Until today (2009), China consumes more than 7 million barrels of oil per day, and Chinese external dependency has reached 47%. Owing to increasing domestic demand for oil, China’s dependency has forced the government to confront their potential risks concerning energy supply. Compared with western countries, China only holds 20 days of strategic petroleum reserve (SPR), which poses as a difficulty for managing the impact of rising oil price on industry. Therefore, before China reaches its target amount of SPR, it will continue to escalate the intensity of its energy diplomacy. If an effective cooperative and dialogue mechanism cannot be constructed internationally, the future of international energy market would surely entail heightened pressure of competition between China and the U.S. and increased chances of tension.

Abstract:
The consensus is clear: our schools and instructional methods are in desperate need of an update (Carnoy, 1998; Daggett, n.d.; Fullan, 2007; Keigel & Patler, 1991; Schwahn & McGarvey, 2011; and Wagner, 2008). In order for students to be globally competitive, school leaders need to identify what students need to know, what they need to be able to do, and what they need to be like to be successful post-graduation, and then change and adapt school practices to meet global needs with an awareness of the 21st century learner. 21st century skills development is necessary in order for students to compete globally (AMA, 2010; ASCD, 2008; Cookson, 2009; Friedman, 2007; Keigel & Patler, 2009; Levine, 2009; Partnership, 2010; Pink, 2006; and Schwahn & McGarvey, 2011). <br>The purpose of this descriptive case study was to investigate a change process that incorporated the Partnership for 21st Century Skills Framework for 21st Century Learning into curricula. I focused on the leaders' perceptions of the change process that allowed for 21st Century Skills to become embedded into the curricula. I was interested in learning what needed to be changed and how the change occurred. The theoretical lens through which this case was studied and described is Adaptive Leadership Theory (Heifetz, 1994; Heifetz, R.A., Linsky, M., & Grashow, A., 2009; Glover, J., Jones, G., and Friedman, H., 2002a; Jones, Shannon, & Weigel, 2009), which can be defined as leadership that inspires and creates breakthroughs, accomplishes deep change, and develops the capability of the organization to survive, adapt, and thrive in complex, competitive, and challenging environments. Adaptive leadership recognizes that anyone, anywhere within the organization, can be a leader (Heifetz, 1994). Three overarching themes emerged: 1) Motivation for Change, and subsequent Student Needs, 2) Mission, and 3) Collaboration.

This paper is a case study of two distinct theatre companies and their marketing practices. The paper was written in the hopes that readers may gain some insights and knowledge about the Singapore and Taiwan market, as well as the marketing tools that these two theatre companies have used. It first provides an overview to the commercial theatre industry, followed by a literature review using Conte and Langley (2007) as well as other prominent scholars. Thereafter was an introduction to Singapore and Taiwan to give some perspective of the cultural situation in these two countries, as well as the two representative commercial theatre companies, Dream Academy (Singapore) and Story Works (Taiwan). The paper also examines the marketing tools used by these two companies. The analysis focuses on three elements – branding, which included repurchase intention and audience outreach, traditional marketing and social media marketing. Notable findings include similar use of traditional marketing tools, differing approaches in branding and the lack of two-way engagement in social media marketing by Story Works. Some observations, suggestions and recommendations were also made in the final chapter, together with a few final thoughts made by this author, in particular, how this paper can continue to be expanded to provide readers with an even deeper understanding about marketing practices in theatre.

Mounsef, Donia. "À corp(u)s perdus : corporéité et spatialité dans le théâtre de Bernard-Marie Koltès et d’Hélène Cixous." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/11264.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the representation of the body and space in the theatre of Bernard-Marie Koltes and Helene Cixous. From the theoretical point of view, it looks at transition in French theatre from a modern to a postmodern predicament, from a discursive to a corporeal theatre. It then looks at the ways postmodern culture maps, configures, disciplines, and violates the body, particularly through the relationship of the new textuality to its stage manifestations. Textually, it analizes three plays by each playwright. The juxtaposition of the works of Koltes and Cixous allows for an in depth look at the theatre of the 1970's and 80's in France, a period marked by theatrical decentralisation and experimentation. Both favoured a strong tie to theatre practice while developing a close relationship with a theatre director: Patrice Chereau, in the case of Koltes, and Ariane Mnouchkine, in the case of Cixous. Aside from looking at the relationship with theatre practitioners, this thesis examines a number of aesthetic and political affinities which bring Koltes and Cixous together, such as redefining a postmodern mythology and a political role for theatre. Unlike many postmodernist theatre practices that try to evade political commitment, both Cixous and Koltes are preoccupied with the resistance to a nihilistic discourse, and propose an evolving and corporeal stage presence inscribed in a pluralistic space of representation. For Koltes, the body on the stage resists symbolic categorization in Combat de negre et de chiens (1979), it then becomes related to spatial reality outside language in Quai ouest (1985), and finally the corporeal body is culturally and ideologically mapped in Le Retour au desert (1988). This triple dimension is also reflected in the work of Cixous, for whom the theatre is a space of feminist praxis. First, the space of representation, through the subversive performativity of the body, questions the premises of the psychoanalytic gaze in Portrait de Dora (1976), then classical mythology is rewritten to disrupt patriarcal discourse in Le Nom d'Oedipe: chant du corps interdit (1978), and a post-colonial role for theatre is redefined in order to question the historical subject in L'Indiade ou l'lnde de leurs reves (1987). Finally, this thesis looks at the ways both Koltes and Cixous join in with postmodernism in declaring the impossibility of grand-narrative, while trying to show how identity cannot be based on essentialist categories of race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, but on the performance of all these various categories as they intersect in the performing body.

Abstract:
At the turn of the twentieth century, Russian writer Zinaida Gippius postulated a radical repudiation of the notions of biologically determined gender and sexuality. An active participant in the Russian religious renaissance of the period, she combined this repudiation with a critique of Orthodox asceticism, formulating in the process a doctrine of ‘holy flesh’. After 1905, she transformed her philosophies into a utopian project for religious revolution, based on the twin principles of sexual freedom and gender equality. This thesis examines the ways in which Gippius used these ideas to resist patriarchal norms, problematising traditional narratives of Russian history, which confine such resistance to bourgeois and socialist feminism, both of which Gippius eschewed

Dires, Demeke Tassew. "Narrative strategies in selected Amharic novels from 2000 until 2010." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/18483.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this research entitled Narrative Strategies in Selected Amharic Novels from 2000 until 2010 was to shed light on the relationship among form, meaning (content) and social milieuin establishing the textual and contextual features of fictional narratives. It mainly contends that it is possible to unravel the textual and contextual qualities of fictional narratives by studying form as a narrative strategy. In this research, form, when understood as a narrative strategy, is not only considered as a textual construct which motivates textual meaning but also regarded as a product of the social milieu from which the text emerges. Having this conception, form as a narrative strategy is investigated in selected Amharic novels published from 2000 until 2010 in view of expounding the artistic and thematic features of contemporary Amharic novels, endeavouring to fill the knowledge gap in Amharic literary scholarship about their literary features. The present research applies narratological approaches that range from classical to post-classical narratology. However, it dominantly uses post-classical conceptions of narratology as guidelines for its discussion. The dissertation comprises six chapters. The first one is an introductory chapter in which the research problems, goals and assumptions are explicated. Chapter two deals with the theoretical framework where the theoretical insight the research utilizes as a guideline is outlined and methodological issues are specified. The following three chapters focus on the analysis. In the third chapter, story is investigated as a narrative strategy in Yeburqa Zemeta (Burka’s Silence) (2000); in the fourth one, focalization is treated as a narrative strategy in Gerač.a Qač.eloč (Grey Bells) (2005), and in the fifth chapter, characterization is studied as a narrative strategy in Dèrtogada (Dertogada) (2010). The dissertation concludes with a chapter in which independent findings in the three analysis chapters are summed up and generalizations on the textual and contextual features of the present day Amharic novels are made.

Abstract:
This Master's thesis reflects the theory of American political philosopher S. Wolin. The work introduces the reader to interpretations of S. Wolin's term inverted totalitarianism and confronts it with the common and mainstream approaches to totalitarianism. It is concerned about S. Wolin's reflection on contemporary western liberal democracy as managed democracy. The text pays attention to work of G. Agamben who takes a similar critique on the form of Euro-Atlantic democracy; for instance the thesis deals with his view of state of exception in which the author sees connections on inverted totalitarianism.
