Abstract:
AbstractThe article explores the morphological evolution of China’s 20th-century architecture chronologically. Chinese Neoclassicism has played a major role in forming the 20th-century heritage buildings surviving today. The phenomenon of Neoclassicism emerged because of the late arrival of China’s modernisation and industrialisation process compared with the West. In turn, in accepting and contesting Western culture, the Chinese elite have consciously relied upon architecture as a vehicle to uphold visible symbols of national Chinese identity and traditional Chinese culture. Meanwhile, in the foreign settlements of the treaty ports such as Shanghai, the Western Neoclassical style, along with other imported construction trends, also forms part of China’s 20th-century architectural heritage. Western Neoclassicism’s influence on China’s new architecture became even more evident in the mid-20th century, with the modern architectural heritage in Tiananmen Square as its exemplar. Nevertheless, the impact of Western modernist architecture on China’s architecture was minimal. It was not until the 1980s, as China reopened to the world, that various schools of thought from the post-industrial West flowed into China, which significantly enriched the types and sources of China’s 20th-century architectural heritage. Modern Classicism, late Modernism and Postmodernism all found their way into China’s contemporary architecture.

Abstract:
Understanding about conservation is limited to ‘monument’ or ‘old work of art’ in the past compared with today’s new concepts like ‘historical and cultural heritage’, ‘heritage of modern architecture’ and ‘heritage of industry’. Turkey’s 20th century modern architecture was started with the early modernism buildings constructed all over Turkey, especially in Ankara and İstanbul in the first years of the Republic. This period includes all the works of architecture that were produced until the late 1980s, carrying the traces of modern movement, rationalist, purist, transparent, reinterpreting the traditional architectural values by means of modern material and seeking of independent form. In this study, the Mevlana Axis between Alaaddin Hill and the historical city centre and the works of architecture in the modernisation period between the early 1900s and 1980s on this axis, contribute to the city identity and handled in the context of modern architectural heritage are evaluated. Keywords: Modern architecture heritage, evaluation criteria, Konya.

Abstract:
The article highlights the almost unexplored issue of the classification of architectural heritage sites. The authors define architectural heritage as a complex of buildings and structures that form the surrounding space and reflect the art of creating these buildings and structures. Pursuing the goal to create a regulating system of Russian architecture monuments, the authors of the article use the architectural style as the main sign of monuments. Reliance on scientific research, written and visual sources allows identifying and characterizing large typological groups of monuments. The first group includes monuments of Russian architectural tradition, created in the period of 11th and 17th centuries on Byzantine and Italian architectural basis. The Baroque style was introduced into Russian architecture in the 18th century. It is characterizes by the magnificence and decorativeness of the details, includes columns, pilasters, sculptural decorations. About a century later, the Baroque was replaced by a style of Classicism. An obligatory element of Classicism monuments is a triangular gable, which rests on columns. Such compositional components as bays, risalitas, and balconies characterize the style. Monuments of classicism form architectural ensembles in Russian cities. The most famous of them is Palace Square in St. Petersburg. Since the mid-19th century, architectural monuments of the Eclectic style have been created. It combines elements of Gothic, Classicism, and folk Russian architecture. Wooden monuments of eclecticism, richly decorated with carvings, make the main pride of Tomsk. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, modern architectural monuments with their characteristic asymmetry of the layout, plant decor in the design of facades are created. Under the influence of the changes brought by the Revolution of 1917, the style of Constructivism spreads in Russian architecture. In the early 1930s, the laconic Constructivism was rejected, the order system returned to the composition of the buildings. They are decorated with stucco moldings and sculptural images. For a long time unnamed, now this style is known as Soviet Neoclassicism. In the late 1950s, monuments of Soviet Neoclassicism were accused of unjustified pomp and parade. In the second half of the 20th century, the trends of Neo-Functionalism and Postmodernism prevail in Russian architecture. The regulating system of architectural monuments proposed in the article allows to characterize objects of architectural heritage, provides continuity of cultural experience.

Abstract:
Abstract For man, the mountain environment was a source of raw materials and a place of economic activity until the end of the 18th century. This paper examines how the exploration of mountain valleys lead from the first ascents to the peaks to today’s exploitation of the mountain environment. We are currently following efforts to protect the unique environment of the mountains and to preserve the architectural heritage of the 20th century. In the paper, we look at the architecture of the High Tatras of the first half of the 20th century, which is lost under the coatings of today. The article traces the line of innovation in the 20th century and examines the causes and consequences of the origin and development of architecture in the alpine environment, with a focus on changes in the paradigm of social thinking in the relationship between architecture and the original landscape. The subject of the paper is mapping of the architectural heritage embedded in the unique environment of the world natural heritage of alpine terrains in the High Tatras and the study of the settlement process with innovative technologies and materials that have enabled architecture to enter difficult terrains. As industrialization, mechanization and electrification have greatly simplified and streamlined the construction process, the work identifies not only the development of new design, technological and material solutions, but also the resilience of the environment to innovation. It focuses on the analysis of innovative progress and monitors its development in contact with the mountain architecture from the moment of planning, work implementation and possible construction changes. The work focuses on the typology of mountain huts and the process of their architectural design.

Abstract. This paper discusses the impact of the advanced systems of architectural survey and modelling to the research on the Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for architectural heritage, particularly when such a tool is applied to the 20th century architectural heritage. The authors focus on a comparison between the Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The Conservation Management Plan for the National Art Schools of Havana in Cuba is used as case study. Given the plurality of buildings and various levels of interest in such a context, conservation and management needs, the need to share the results with non-specialized stakeholders, the need to combine different scales of analysis and different typologies of materials, the results point out the advantages of a GIS platform. The conclusions open to further possibilities of integrating GIS and BIM to the specific task of effectively conserving and managing the 20th century architectural heritage.

Abstract:
The concept of employment for the Islamic architectural heritage takes great place and attention by architects or those who study and analyze the Islamic heritage in architecture. However, most of the architectural applications that appear on the ground focus on the physical aspect of that heritage as it represents the visual image of it and the most relevant aspect of the memory of Islamic societies in the Eastern and Western Islamic world. This causes the problem of the artisanal transport of the heritage of the Islamic architectural heritage without looking at this heritage objectively and understanding the social and cultural circumstances and causes that led to its emergence as it is. The research assumes that the Islamic architectural heritage possesses rich intellectual and material resources that can be utilized nowadays in contemporary projects if they are removed from imitation and direct form transport. The research focuses specifically on the architecture of the mosques and selects two old models, the Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo and the Mashhad in the ninth century AD, and the Meikat Mosque in Medina and Mashad at the end of the 20th century. The research aims at shedding light on the concept of followers in the building of contemporary Islamic mosques as a mechanism for employing the Islamic architectural heritage and identifying the defects in the process of followings and the surrounding areas in the building of contemporary mosques.

The paper analyses the Lithuanian architecture of the soviet period through the prism of stylistic development and history of architectural ideas. The main task of the work is to determine the heritage values of the soviet period from the point of view of architectural history. Before going into deeper analysis of separate stylistic aspects some key problems of the soviet time heritage evaluation are discussed. Particular attention is given to the need of separation of the soviet time architectural history from the political history as well as to the problem of integration of the soviet heritage into contemporary city life. Three main approaches on the architecture of the soviet period are pointed out: socialist realism, soviet industrial modernism and plurality of stylistic attitudes during the last decades of the soviet period. The paper follows an assumption that some characteristic buildings of each architectural outlook should be saved in order to have an example of authentic way of development in the Lithuanian architecture during the 20th century.

Mies van der Rohe’s built work covers a timeframe of over 60 years, including two world wars and several revolutionary events in the history of architecture. The extraordinary architect has influenced 20th century architecture worldwide like few others have. In the context of several restoration projects, the time has come to review the condition of his buildings: Is their materiality as timeless as their appearance? Did his constructions, which are of sometimes an experimental nature, prove to be sustainable, or did they fall into disrepair? How can Mies van der Rohe buildings be documented, repaired, restored, reconstructed, without losing the characteristic details of his work, and in order to preserve the architectural integrity and relevance of the Mies van der Rohe's oeuvre?

Abstract:
Abstract In the last half-century, the world has witnessed a fast-paced technological development where cities have been changing tremendously in terms of infrastructure, public health, and quality of life. Looking into the Middle East and specifically in the Gulf states, the rapid urban growth started in the late 20th century has made the status of heritage structures more vulnerable. Cultural heritage in general and modern architectural heritage in particular, are facing extreme danger, which in turn leads to the loss of cultural identity and memory. The paper investigates the modern architectural heritage of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), taking Dubai as a case study. Due to the constant urban and architectural growth that Dubai has been witnessing since the 1950s, its 20th-century heritage has been put in extreme danger of neglect, or extreme physical alterations and, in many cases, demolishment. The UAE governmental bodies have started launching initiatives for the study and preservation of the modern architectural heritage, beginning with the Dubai Municipality’s initiative in 2017, and continuing on a wider scope with the UAE’s Ministry of Culture and Youth initiative in 2019. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this process by establishing a chronological overview of the various architectural expressions of the modern era in the UAE. In that sense, the paper introduces a set of commercial architectural examples built in Dubai during the period between the 1960s and the 1970s. As well, it identifies and analyses their cultural and architectural characteristics, and assesses their values based on a chronological, morphological, and stylistic overview. The paper provides preliminary results and key findings and discusses possible guidelines and evaluation criteria to identify and evaluate Dubai’s modern built environment to aid their identification and ranking process, as well as promoting the shaping of conservation policies.

Abstract:
Architectural monuments of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur located in the southwestern part of Azerbaijan as an integral part of the architectural heritage of the country had permanently been the subject of study in the 20th century. Some monuments were studied in the context of historical development of Azerbaijani architecture as examples of various architectural types and were included in the periodization and classification of medieval architecture. However, there is a need for a deeper study of rich architectural heritage of these regions, which are closely related to each other from geographic, historical and economic points of viewbased on its common roots, peculiarities and characteristic features, common historical development. Of great interest is the study of the history of the formation and development of architecture, identification of common sources and traditions, links and connections with the architecture of other parts of Azerbaijan precisely in the Karabakh-Zangezur region. The general catastrophe that befell the architectural and cultural heritage of the region as a whole due to the Armenian occupation over the past 30 years has predetermined the need and urgency for the creation of a scientific basis for its restoration and protection This article talks about the historical and current state of the monuments of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, examines various aspects of the historical development of the investigated area associated with the formation of Azerbaijan culture at different historical stages.

The main purpose of this study is to understand the impact of political upheaval on the reconstruction of the architectural heritage and the architectural development process that appeared at this time. During the turbulent period(19~20th century), political upheaval influenced society as a whole. The reconstruction of the architectural heritage was also carried out in conjunction with the political upheaval at that time. It confirmed a clear architectural tendency in the reconstruction of the architectural heritage. First of all, it was found that the reconstruction subject strongly intervened in the selection of the reconstruction target, the appearance of the reconstruction target, the method and speed of the reconstruction progress. Lastly it was empirically analyzed through a case review that the reconstruction of the architectural heritage was intentionally carried out to spread the political ideology of the time.

One of the main subjects in contemporary architecture is how to deal with the physical and intellectual requirements of transforming modern housing. Joan Busquets points out in his contribution to this issue, that the special effort made by modern architects and progressive housing politics during the 20th century must be reinterpreted and followed today. Intentionally, this issue brings a special focus on the Iberoamerican world, specifically Spain, Portugal and Latin America, with the aim of relocating it in a cultural world of predominantly Anglo-American historiography. In any case, it presents a very wide spectrum, including North America, Switzerland and Great Britain. For this reason the projects are presented as case studies, both housing politics in different countries, and paradigmatic architectural examples, either positive or negative.

Spanish architecture, towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, was characterized by the development of a variety of styles, including Neo-Muslim. The Alhambra of Granada, the Mosque of Cordoba, and the Giralda Tower of Seville, served as inspiration to the design of works that would follow these models, some to a greater extent than others, and would eventually give rise to an architectural trend that would make its way all across Spain. As such, this article attempts to provide some examples of said architecture found in different autonomous communities in Spain, examining them through four typologies, as well as to discuss the consideration and use of the Neo-Muslim style after the second half of the 20th century. The methodology behind this research involved extensive reading and analysis of both general and specific works on the subject, the study of archival materials relative to some of the selected buildings, about which preserved evidence was scarce, as well as taking photographs of the properties included in the text.

Abstract. The use of steel technologies in Italian architecture still represents an unexplored field of research, characterised by limited and fragmented episodes that reveal important design experimentations and relevant architectural results of the 20th century. For this reason, the aim of the research consists of defining a HBIM methodological approach addressed to the study of modern steel architectures, considering their specific features and their hybrid constructive nature. Indeed these buildings are often characterized by a high level of industrial production of building components merged with the recovery of a craftsmanship tradition, particularly appearing at the scale of structure and envelope details. The balance between standardization and traditional techniques in production processes, leads to the definition of a HBIM method composed of three steps: an operational tools for existing buildings of 20th century made of steel that could support the construction of building digital archives, the organisation of maintenance programs and possible transformative actions, avoiding the loss of this heritage sometimes caused by bad interventions that deeply change original and valuable features of these architectures.

The paper discusses how a Geographic Information System (GIS) contributes to set up a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the sustainable preservation of a 20th-century architectural masterpiece. The National Art Schools of Cuba are presented as a case study. The complex consists of five iconic buildings built in the early 1960s within a 56-hectare city-park. Since they are today underused and in a poor state of conservation, a research project among Italy, Cuba, and the US addressed a CMP’s preparation between 2018 and 2020. A GIS was prepared to collect and manage the whole data, based on graphic support consistent with both the site’s features and the research’s goal, to set up a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan. By illustrating this experience’s pros and cons, the paper discusses how GIS may contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of such extensive 20th-century architectural complexes.

Abstract. By rapidly increasing the production of energy and widely extending the usage of electricity in the 20th century, hydroelectric plants and dams have radically affected the social, technological and industrial aspects of the period. Therefore, as an integral part of industrial heritage, the cultural assets of these energy facilities are required to be preserved. As a requirement of this hypothesis, it is necessary: to develop management strategies for these assets; to provide scientific data and information on these buildings / facilities; to define criteria of ‘planned conservation’ with long-term preventive measures in order to provide the continuation of the original function as long as possible. Hydroelectric plants are a common subject of interest for several disciplines, such as: engineering, hydrology, ecology, geo-sciences and remote sensing. Therefore, the conservation of the plants also requires the interdisciplinary study and collaboration of these disciplines.

Within the study, the considerations of an interdisciplinary approach – such as dam safety, ecological concerns and energy requirements – are presented, and examples from different countries are examined through the framework of architectural conservation, considering cases of dam failures, intended removal of dams and upgrading of facilities. Preventive measures for the planned conservation of hydro electrical facilities such as: constant maintenance of technical components; management of the sediment accumulated in the reservoirs; methods of analysis for the structure of the embankment are introduced briefly, concentrating on gravity dams, in order to provide conclusions for the conservation of Sarıyar Dam and Hydroelectric Plant (1956) in Turkey.

Abstract:
Historical structures are important in terms of both original construction techniques and cultural heritage. Therefore, material properties, construction techniques and dynamic behaviors of these structures must be identified in order to preserve them in the future by restoration studies. This study is aimed to serve as an example for similar buildings in the region whose walls were constructed using filled brick with lime mortar and constructed using both timber and reinforced concrete slabs. In this study, the plan layout, construction techniques and the material usage of the building were investigated in detail. The mechanical and dynamic properties such as compressive stress, elastic moduli, shear stress, natural frequencies and mode shapes of the building were determined in-situ by flat-jack, shear and vibration tests. The finite element model of the structure was prepared, and the modal analysis of the structure was performed. The calibration of the model was ensured according to the vibration test results. The results obtained from this study show us that in-situ tests are extremely important for the accuracy of finite element models. It has been determined that the mechanical test data can be used with over 80% success in finite element models.

Abstract:
Today, the issue of restoring and preserving culture is more relevant than ever for Ukraine. After all, awareness of its significance is the basis of self-awareness of the individual in the context of cultural diversity. Our country has a large number of architectural heritage sites from different periods, which illustrates our multinational culture. However, the problem of uncontrolled construction in the historical center, motivated solely by investment benefits, directly harms the monuments of architecture and urban planning. And the silence of this issue is fraught with their complete extermination and the loss of identity by the city. The objective of the article is also to highlight the value of architectural heritage objects for Ukraine. The article considers an outstanding monument of architecture and urban planning of Kyiv, the Estate of the Ambulance Society. Its history from the moment of construction to the problems of the present, the architecture of facades, elements of their decor and planning features of the building are studied. It emphasizes the importance of preserving a unique example of quality architecture of the early twentieth century. The methodological basis of the study is to systematize and analyze the data obtained from various information sources. The article can be useful for historians of architecture or medicine, as well as for architects who have a scientific interest or work directly with cultural heritage sites. During the study, it was found that the current emergency condition of the building has been present for more than twenty years. Inattention to the unique architectural monument in the Main Directorate for the Protection of Cultural Heritage is explained by the lack of funds for restoration. Having a complicated history, more than a century-long, the estate is an example of successful planning of a medical institution of the early 20th century in the conditions of dense development in the central part of Kyiv.

Abstract:
Cinemas emerged as a new and genuine expression of culture at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1920s cinema buildings became important for developing city life and especially as a social public space for entertainment. The period of great success of cinemas was inevitably destined to fade with the arrival of TV. However, this period left behind interesting architectural heritage. On the other hand, the “box of dreams”, the cinema industry, is a suggestive media contributing in defining other aspects of popular culture in a period of hectic changes and progress. The scope of this paper aims to investigate this specific building type, cinemas, within the context of modern heritage value in northern Cyprus. The purpose is to raise awareness on significance of cinema buildings thus to foster their protection and enhancement. The study also aims to investigate the historical relation of these buildings to their environments and neighborhoods as well as their transformed current situations. Some buildings were replaced with new ones, some were abandoned, and some others were converted into different uses. These transformed situations are results of changing economic, socio-cultural life styles and changing morphology of the cities. This paper aims also to stress the role of Cypriot architects and architecture in the international panorama within the Mediterranean area, in a peculiar multicultural context. Common features with other countries and local characteristics of the selected buildings are detected and analysed. Architectural qualities and solutions are studied to understand the reflections of the studied period. This study follows a qualitative research approach. The key discussions are made through investigating the cinema buildings and spaces in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus, as a case study method. This research investigates these buildings and spaces through historical archives, photographic surveys and producing maps for showing the location of these within the historic Walled City of Nicosia and its close surrounding. This stage provides significant data about their historic conditions and surroundings and comparisons with today’s current situations. In addition, interviews with local residents who used these cinemas in those periods are also carried out to support historical information and highlight the socio-cultural and economic understanding of those days.

Abstract:
The architectural heritage of Baku in the period under study is in dire need of protection today. Urgent study of the supporting structures of the monuments for their preservation, strengthening, replacement, etc. is necessary. At the present stage there is an urgent need for the conservation of individual monuments of architecture, creation of conditions for their correct use and exposure, measures for the regeneration of the historic environment. The aim of this study is to develop the concept of preservation of the architectural heritage of Baku, relating to the late 19th – early 20th century on the basis of identifying their condition. The research methodology is based on a systematic approach, which includes the analysis of literary and archive materials, full-scale studies of architectural monuments and surrounding buildings, typological classification of architectural heritage by type, chronology of construction and development of the concept of the historical heritage preservation of Baku of the period under study. The study of the general condition of the buildings considered in this work allows us to conclude that they are in a relatively satisfactory condition. Some of them have recently been restored. øt is necessary to carry out restoration and rehabilitation works in others. The considered buildings are the most striking architectural monuments of the capitalist period of Baku. Their rehabilitation requires a correct approach, taking into account all aspects of the modern preservation of historical buildings. For the first time, the main directions of the concept of preserving the architectural heritage of Baku of the period under study have been developed. The main concept proposed by R.Mustafayeva is based on the preservation of their historical authenticity, without changing the original idea of the authors of the project. The main proposals and conclusions presented in this paper can be successfully applied in the projects of rehabilitation of historical buildings in Baku. In this article sections 1,2,3,4 were made by Z.Mammadova. Sections 6.7, 8.9 were elaborated by R.Mustafayeva. Section 5 was developed jointly by both authors.

Abstract:
The architectural heritage of the 20th century is peculiarly vulnerable; partly because modern architecture broke with tradition, it is less easily recognised as being historic and worthy of preservation. Furthermore, efforts to secure public appreciation of contemporary architecture have concentrated too narrowly on the ‘International Modern’ style at the expense of the actual diversity of this century, on certain architects at the expense of others, and on the individual building, seen by itself, at the expense of the larger environment of which it is part. To see twentieth century architecture whole, it is necessary to depend on not only buildings themselves (insofar as they survive in something like their original condition), and not only on publications (which have tended to reflect the promotion of Modernism), but also on archival sources and above all, on the private archives of architects. The value of such archives derives not only from handsome architectural drawings, which institutions are always eager to acquire, but also from account books, publicity material, models, photographs, and notebooks, and from the integrity and coherence of all this material which belongs together; it is probably the challenge represented by such a range of material which accounts for the paucity of architectural archives in the public sphere. Fortunately, a new climate of interest in architecture, which has seen the establishment of several museums of architecture and the emergence of ‘l’archivisme’ – a re-interpreting of architectural styles of the past, drawing on archival sources and influencing contemporary architectural practice via exhibition design in particular – augurs well for the future of architectural archives. In France, the Institut Français d’Architecture has been responsible for archives of 20th century architecture since 1980, and since 1988 has operated an information centre for private architectural archives in Paris and the surrounding area. Other regional architectural archives are being set up; it is to be hoped that the resulting network will help to foment a spirit which will lead to the establishment of a museum of architecture in Paris, while at the same time providing a safety-net to ensure the well-being of private architectural archives.

The relevance of the study is supported by the general trend of re-industrialization and the need to preserve the industrial heritage. The complexity of the task is conditioned by the lack of clear ideas about the industrial heritage perception. In contrast to historical and cultural cities, industrial cities are studied because of needs of industrialization in the 20th century and often are not of architectural value. Nevertheless, the prevailing architectural and industrial environment of medium-sized industrial cities of Siberia allows saving the population, genetically predetermines the development trends of urban planning and is a key element of the capitallabor ratio, not only in the industrial resettlement framework, but also as an independent unit. Historical, retrospective, morphological, graphoanalytical and other methods are used to identify the development scenarios of the architectural and industrial environment, its preservation mechanisms in terms of the Siberian region and cities with a population of 50 to 100 thousand people. The article presents the criteria for the preservation of industrial heritage formed on the programs of industrial heritage preservation and the analysis of the architectural and industrial environment of medium-sized industrial cities of Siberia.

Studies of the historical development of construction and applied building materials have so far mainly focused on the most important architectural and engineering achievements that had a major impact on further developments. This paper focuses on the development of structures and building materials in a region that has not been the subject of previous researches, as the buildings studied belong to the narrow geographical area of northern Vojvodina during the period when it was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. The research includes a detailed analysis of the preserved archival material, review of the literature, as well as analysis and research on individual buildings during restoration works. The results shown in the paper reveal the appearance of exceptional design solutions for individual structures and architectural achievements in the seemingly uninteresting and stalled provincial environment.

Abstract:
The paper analyses ethical imperatives for the soviet time heritage in contemporary Lithuanian architecture. The main statement of this paper is that the soviet period is an important part in the 20th century history of Lithuanian architecture. However, because of economic, cultural and ideological changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union this unprotected by law architectural heritage gradually disappears. The paper discusses the idea that only ethical consideration of contemporary society towards this problem can change the situation. Also, it is pointed out that the ethical responsibility lies not only on architects and construction developers but also on the entire society, which supports the idea to have this architecture as a part of our city in order to reflect its cultural and architectural history. The position regarding this part of heritage should be much more creative compared with traditional attitude towards architectural heritage.

Abstract:
Since the 1990s architectural historians discovered Modern architecture in Africa as part of a cultural production related to colonialism. With the introduction of postcolonial theory in the historiography of architecture, an exclusively ideological critical sense has been developed preventing disciplinary autonomy or practice of architecture and finally condemning any objective look. Recently, the development of concepts such as hybrid or the otherness has been promoting a nuanced historical analysis about architecture and politics in the 20th century in Africa. The recognition that a widespread awareness of Modern Movement architecture has always been serving colonization involves rethinking the basic principle of Modern welfare society and practiced architecture as a mission: how Modern principles have been exchanged, resulting from a Eurocentric culture with the cultures from the East and Africa. In addition, it must be said that the case of Sub–Saharan Lusophone Africa is now beginning to be studied in depth putting together peripheral universes.

Abstract:
SummaryWhen the definition of cultural heritage in architecture is questioned regarding the perception of society, the results demonstrate that people identify cultural heritage as both material and spiritual achievements in the past and as a reflection of identity associated with historical monuments. Furthermore, the distinction between monument and cultural heritage does not have a well-distinguished definition for society in most cases. Therefore, the perception of people in the appraisal of cultural heritage consistently obscures the protection process, especially regarding the heritage of the Modern Movement era in architecture which started to be seen in the 20th century. While the experts acknowledge Modern Movement artefacts as cultural heritage, in most cases the perception of non-experts differs. Therefore, its architectural merit is not appreciated by society in the way it deserves, neither as an artefact nor as cultural heritage. By both literature review and performed research, this paper aims to analyse the reasons which create deprecation regarding the evaluation of Modern Movement heritage. Furthermore, it tries to suggest a series of actions which can be taken for achieving the protection of Modern Movement heritage.

The use of concrete materials in Portugal, namely reinforced concrete, began in the 19th century. However, during the 20th century, the increase in the application of this composite material, alongside the use of hydraulic binders, led to a disruption of traditional construction techniques and enhanced generalized application in concrete structures, combining aesthetics with functionality. In this paper, the authors will present and discuss several physical and mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete materials from 12 award-winning architectural buildings constructed between the 1930s and the end of the 20th century in Lisbon, Portugal. These results are vital to evaluate their durability, as those buildings have an undiscussable heritage value in the context of 20th-century buildings’ valorization. Furthermore, the results will contribute to the knowledge of the current state of conservation of these materials and will allow an understanding of the evolution in the application of national regulations during this period.

Abstract:
Old load-bearing masonry buildings exist all around the world. The cultural and architectural heritage value of these buildings and the consciousness of public opinion have led to a need for safeguarding and preservation policies for these architecturally valued buildings and urban aggregates. This paper provides the information on the constructive and structural details of the old buildings dating from the 12th to 19th century in the Bay of Kotor and discusses their seismic and dynamic behaviour, identifying structural fragilities and consequently their vulnerability. One factor that significantly influences the seismic vulnerability is the quality of workmanship, which has, in conjunction with the lack of maintenance of the buildings, increased the seismic vulnerability of heritage masonry buildings in general. Masonry constructions represent an important part of Montenegrin Architectural Heritage. The existing heritage masonry buildings in the Bay of Kotor suffered major earthquakes with repairs ranging from minor repairs to partial rebuilding. No degree of seismic resistance to any potentially severe shaking levels has been determined for the surviving buildings. The lack of strategies, policies and actions by the institutions responsible for this domain in the course of the second half of the 20th century drove these buildings to the state of serious degradation. The adoption of intrusive and inadequate rehabilitation and conservation practices, using new materials and construction techniques on structural and nonstructural elements, has strayed away from traditional knowledge and practices. The main objective of this research is understanding the whole building process that underpins a historical construction, and building techniques and other methods applied in building the architectural and engineering structures constituting the present Historical Heritage in Montenegro.

Abstract:
Abstract The creation of interior spaces is the main cognitive characteristic of architectural creation. Architecture creates a basic spatial framework for the interior. Interior design is a complex type of architectural activity that forms both the space (basically the interior) and the individual elements of the interior space. The professional interior design of architects or designers intentionally creates an environment specifically intended for human life. It is where people are in the most personal contact with the environment surrounding them. Just as an artificially created environment has a strong influence on a person’s life and feelings, it has also been proven that it works the other way round as well, i.e. that human needs and demands are a decisive factor in creating space for a person. The case studies demonstrate the development of the interior design in the second half of the 20th century, its current state and level of care given to these works. Architecture from this period has often lost its struggle for survival. As regards the style, these are works in international style, late modern and postmodern, and the local element makes them a unique and attractive testimony to the era. Despite the natural properties of interiors which seldom survive as long as the architecture itself, some contemporary statements about the interior design of the period under review have been preserved. The research focused on the public interiors of both well-known and less-known buildings by Slovak architects from various parts of Slovakia. The research calls attention to the fact that architects worked here even then and their works were of certain quality.

Abstract:
Suitable graphic documentation is essential to ascertain and conserve architectural heritage. For the first time, accurate digital images are provided of a 16th-century wooden ceiling, composed of geometric interlacing patterns, in the Pinelo Palace in Seville. Today, this ceiling suffers from significant deformation. Although there are many publications on the digital documentation of architectural heritage, no graphic studies on this type of deformed ceilings have been presented. This study starts by providing data on the palace history concerning the design of geometric interlacing patterns in carpentry according to the 1633 book by López de Arenas, and on the ceiling consolidation in the 20th century. Images were then obtained using two complementary procedures: from a 3D laser scanner, which offers metric data on deformations; and from photogrammetry, which facilitates the visualisation of details. In this way, this type of heritage is documented in an innovative graphic approach, which is essential for its conservation and/or restoration with scientific foundations and also to disseminate a reliable digital image of the most beautiful ceiling of this Renaissance palace in southern Europe.

With the second article were photographs of newly built public buildings by architect Sigurdur Gudmundsson (1885-1958) as well as bridges designed in the 1920s and 1930s by the engineers of the Icelandic State Highways Department. Shand was impressed by the work of the “gifted and thoroughly modern minded architect such as any country might be proud of” as well as the work of “first rate–engineers” of this “geographically remote island which at that time had only 100,000 inhabitants and 2,000 motorcars. Abstract:
The study examines the expressive means of dance and architecture, establishes common and specific areas in the nature of their artistic language, identifies the extent of interaction between architectural principles with dance dramaturgy and choreographic composition, and analyzes examples of interpretation of dance production solutions in the architectural space. Through a simultaneous review, the author examines the expressive means of dance and architecture, establishing the common and the specific in the expressive and pictorial nature of their artistic language. The focus is on identifying the degree of influence of architectural principles on the dance drama, choreographic composition, and the reverse impact. The analysis provides examples of the interpretation of dance staging solutions in the architectural space, including innovative modern practices of the 20th‑21st centuries. The artistic and imaginative metamorphoses of staged choreographic solutions occurring in different kinds of architectural spaces are considered. Starting with the perspectivism of the scenery on the stage and the light architecture of the 18th century, the author moves on to the monumental construction of the large stage performance of the 19th century and concludes with the choreographic experiments of the early 20th century. The article points out that modern times offer the most curious design solutions. There are examples of bold, original methods of interaction between choreography and architecture: dances are staged directly in the interiors of buildings, bypassing the traditional stage platform. The implied idea of human movement in space, encompassing the viewer, appears here because of successively changing impressions. Finally, the author explores the directorial approach, where the choreography itself masters and constructs the architecture, helping the viewer to perceive themselves as if within its own spatial structure. This peculiar artistic and visual synthesis appears in the dynamics of genre and style of the author’s stage context. The study of the specifics of ballet as a dramatic phenomenon seems to be a fundamental research task, because, more than any other theatrics genre, it is the ballet that provided extremely diversified artistic samples of space and stage creativity in the heritage of the 20th century, and probably, will continue to do so in the 21st. The question of dance interpretation in the architectural space is a significant independent subject of research in connection with the structure and evolution of the artistic image in contemporary choreographic art. Against the background of postmodernist modern style trends as a global creative principle of post-culture, this topic includes broad general aesthetic associations. It is vital to the understanding of the artistic process in contemporary art in general.

Abstract:
Introduction: At present, the preservation of unique architectural ensembles is one of the most urgent problems of sustainable development in historical settlements. In the context of transforming the settlement’s environment while minimizing the discordant impact of new construction, it is important to study the development sites that will be used as the basis for modern planning. Method: The article applies the method of geometric analysis to the historical buildings of the city of Ryazan, which exhibit classical architecture traits and were designed by the 19th- and 20th-century architects, in order to assess their compliance with the rules of classical composition, specifically the use of golden section proportions. We also talk about the golden section in general, reviewing its history and the rules of its application in architecture. Results: We emphasize the inseparable link between architecture and geometry. Our study proves that the golden section principles were used by architects during different historical periods. In the context of the invariably high interest towards the creative heritage of architects from the 19th and 20th centuries and the need to build upon their historical experience, it is highly relevant to approach the modern architectural practice from the standpoint of using the canon of Neoclassical architecture.

Abstract:
The article covers the results of the study of a historical wooden holiday architectural ensemble called Świdermajer, located on the outskirts of Warsaw in Poland. The fashion for traveling and resting within natural surroundings emerged in the 19th century, contributing to the popularization of a new model of spending free time. It had an impact on the development of a new type of architecture, including the “Swiss style”, today representing an extremely picturesque European architectural heritage integrated into the landscape. The area of Otwock is one of a very few of such places in Poland, where the entire complexes of suburban wooden holiday buildings from the late 19th and early 20th century have survived. This paper aims to show an overview of a development of the local wooden building trend on the “Otwock Line” within its historical and social background. The main goal of the study focuses on identifying the characteristic features of the architectural wooden local style. As a final outcome of the study, the article presents the method applied for the recording and assessment of historic wooden summer villas. The conducted study confirmed the distinctiveness of the phenomenon represented by cultural values and, at the same time, its strong links with the Alpine style of architecture.

Abstract:
The Industrial buildings of the 19th and 20th century on the outskirts of Athens, Piraeus, Chalkida, Xanthi, Karditsa – architectural tokens of a violent, sweeping deindustrialization – claim a new life and a new identity. The tobacco warehouse in Xanthi, the soap and pomace oil plant in Chalkida, the old ware-houses of the railway station in Karditsa, the fertilizer plant in Drapetsona (Pi-raeus), the Votrys spirits and alcohol factory in Sepolia (Athens) – they are all being transformed and rearranged, acquiring a new form and structure, aspiring to be reintegrated into the urban reality and play a brand new active role in the socio-political scene. This paper presents, through a series of research proposals, distinct ways to ap-proach, manage and negotiate this ready-made and readily available architectural “raw material.” It showcases ways to highlight and cross-pollinate past usage and historical memory with a process of reinterpretation, reframing and revitalization of industrial ruins. Understanding architecture as a complex and open activity allows for a degree of compromise and conciliation with the locus, the memory, the material imprints, the history of a city. When the anthropocentric focus takes precedence over practicality, commerciality, the ideology of pomposity and the culture of opulence and technocratic sensationalism; when synthetic gesture al-lows the integration of tangible and intangible traces of the past to produce new spaces that show care for the collective needs and sensibilities of the citizens and address demands and visions of the community; then the architectural conception is fulfilling its primary role: to be in the core of scientific processes that modify, revitalize and transform the existing urban matter.
