Abstract:
Abstract. The main objective of this work was to report the recovery of seasonal pattern of GPP obtained by eddy covariance measurements in a eucalypt (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) site in Pegões (Southern Portugal) after a felling processed in October and November of 2006. This was made in a wider context of a general description of the evolution of carbon sequestration at several timescales in the period 2002–2010. In Portugal eucalypt stands aimed mainly for pulp production occupies an area of about 739 515 ha, (National Forest Inv 2005–2006) corresponding to about 23% of total forest area. The site is part of a 300 ha eucalypt stand, located in Herdade da Espirra, intensively managed as coppice under a twelve year productive cycle with a density of about 1100 trees/ha and characterized by a 12-month growing period. A prolonged drought in 2004 and 2005 and a felling in October–November 2006, followed by the start of a new production cycle, changed the carbon sink ability of eucalypt stand. In the two drought years, rainfall was reduced to values of 50%, relatively to long-term 709 mm average of. In the period prior to cutting NEE of 8.7 g cm−2 was maximum in 2002 decreasing to a minimum of 3.6 tons/ha in 2005 at the peak of the effect of drought. After the felling the eucalypt stand recovered its carbon sink capacity in June 2007 with an annual GPP of 1621.6 g cm−2 in 2010. Seasonal patterns of GPP in 2007, 2008 and 2009 were almost opposite to that of the period before the felling, with a tendency to recover to the situation prior the felling in 2010.

Abstract:
Stripe smut, caused by Ustilago striiformis, is a common disease of grasses grown for turf, but quantitative information concerning its occurrence in grass seed production fields is lacking. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, stripe smut was detected in 16, 17, and 3 out of 51, 42, and 33 Dactylis glomerata (orchardgrass) seed production fields surveyed in western Oregon, respectively. Stripe smut was not previously known to occur in these fields. The percentage of plants per transect with stripe smut in 2004, 2005, and 2006 ranged from 0 to 12, 0 to 4, and 0 to 1, respectively. In additional surveys during 2004-2006, to determine whether stripe smut was also occurring in seed production fields of other grasses in western Oregon, stripe smut was found in one field of Agrostis stolonifera, but was not detected in fields of Agrostis castellana, A. capillaries, Festuca arundinacea, F. longifolia, F. ovina, F. rubra subsp. commutata, F. rubra subsp. rubra, or Lolium perenne. Abstract:
Abstract. In this study, a new parameterization method based on MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data, AVHRR (Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer) data and in-situ data is constructed and tested for deriving the regional evaporative fraction (EF) over heterogeneous landscape. As a case study, the methodology was applied to the Tibetan Plateau area. Eight images of MODIS data (17 January 2003, 14 April 2003, 23 July 2003 and 16 October 2003; 30 January 2007, 15 April 2007, 1 August 2007 and 25 October 2007) and four images of AVHRR data (17 January 2003, 14 April 2003, 23 July 2003 and 16 October 2003) were used in this study for the comparison among winter, spring, summer and autumn and the annual variation analysis. The derived results were also validated by using the "ground truth" measured in the stations of the Tibetan Observation and Research Platform (TORP) and the CAMP/Tibet (CEOP (Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period) Asia-Australia Monsoon Project (CAMP) on the Tibetan Plateau). The results show that the derived EF in four different seasons over the Tibetan Plateau area is in good accordance with the land surface status. The EF show a wide range due to the strong contrast of surface features over the Tibetan Plateau. Also, the estimated EF is in good agreement with the ground measurements, and their absolute percent difference (APD) is less than 10% in the validation sites. The results from AVHRR were also in agreement with MODIS, with the latter usually displaying a higher level of accuracy. It is therefore concluded that the proposed methodology is successful for the retrieval of EF using the MODIS data, AVHRR data and in-situ data over the Tibetan Plateau area, and the MODIS data is the better one and it should be used widely for the evapotranspiration (ET) research over this region.

Abstract:
Two separate experiments on the North-West Slopes of New South Wales investigated: (1) the effects of differing lengths of pre-sowing weed control (2 years, 1 year, and 3–4 months in the spring immediately before sowing) on the soil seed density of liverseed grass (Urochloa panicoides) from November 2005 to November 2007 and its seedling density at establishment (December 2007), as well as on subsequent herbage mass and plant frequency of this species and Panicum coloratum var. makarikariense cv. Bambatsi (Expt 1); and (2) the effects of cultivar, time of sowing (November 2006, January 2007, and March 2007), and defoliation in the autumn after sowing, on the over-wintering ability of 5 tropical perennial grasses (Expt 2). The cultivars sown in Expt 2 were Bambatsi, Dichanthium aristatum cv. Floren, Chloris gayana cv. Katambora, Digitaria eriantha var. eriantha cv. Premier, and Bothriochloa bladhii var. glabra cv. Swann. At sowing (November 2007), liverseed grass seed and seedling densities in Expt 1 were lowest (P < 0.05) in the 2-year pre-sowing weed control treatment (15 and 13/m2, respectively), and the subsequent herbage mass of Bambatsi (January and October 2008) was highest (P < 0.05) in this treatment. In Expt 2, 59 frosts occurred in 2007, and Floren, Bambatsi, and Swann sown in March of that year over-wintered poorly and had lower (P < 0.05) herbage mass and plant frequency in the following spring compared with the other sowing times. These differences were also evident in autumn and spring 2008, up to 23 months after sowing.

Abstract:
Capsaicin is the main pungent component of chili peppers. Thisis the first case, to our knowledge, that describes prostatespecificantigen (PSA) stabilization in a patient with prostate cancer, who had biochemical failure after radiation therapy. A 66-year-old male underwent radiotherapy treatment for a T2b, Gleason7 (3+4) adenocarcinoma of the prostate, with a PSA level of13.3 ng/mL in April 2001. He had 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapyof 46 Gy in 23 fractions to the prostate and pelvis, and aprostate boost of 30 Gy in 15 fractions. Radiotherapy was completedin May 2001 and PSA nadired in January 2002 (0.57). Dueto the continued PSA rise, the patient was started on bicalutamide(50 mg orally, daily) and leuprolide acetate (1 dose of 22.5 mgintramuscularly) in July 2005 when PSA was 38.5 ng/mL. Due topoor tolerance of androgen ablation therapy, the patient discontinuedtreatment and started taking 2.5 mL of habaneros chilisauce, containing capsaicin, 1 to 2 times a week in April 2006.Prostate-specific antigen doubling time (PSAdt) increased from4 weeks before capsaicin to 7.3 months by October 2006. FromOctober 2006 until November 2007, the patient remained oncapsaicin (2.5 to 15 mL daily) and his PSA was stable (between11 to 14 ng/mL). By January 2008, his PSA rose to 22.3 and hehas maintained a PSAdt between 4 and 5 months, where it presentlyremains. Due to the patient’s continued PSA rise, he was restartedon bicalutamide (12.5 mg daily). Apart from PSA relapse, the patientremains free of signs or symptoms of recurrence.

Abstract:
Pierce's disease (PD) is a vascular disease of grapes vectored by xylem-feeding sharpshooters and leading to vine decline, yield loss, and vine death. Recent warm winters have increased concerns about PD in Virginia. The authors conducted a survey of 31 Virginia vineyards in 21 counties for X. fastidiosa in late fall, 2006. The survey confirms X. fastidiosa in the northernmost vineyards sampled, and in some of the westernmost vineyards in Virginia. It is likely that all vineyards throughout the sampled area are at risk of PD. Accepted for publication 23 May 2007. Published 4 October 2007.

Stithou, Mavra. "The economic value of improvements in the ecology of Irish rivers due to the water framework directive." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/12552.

Full text
Abstract:
Following the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) integrated catchment management plans must be prepared for all river basins, in order to achieve 'good ecological status' (GES) in all EU waters. This concept is a broader measure of water quality than the chemical and biological measures, which were previously dominant in EU water policy. The Directive also calls for a consideration of the economic costs and benefits of improvements to ecological status in catchment management plans, along with the introduction of full social cost pricing for water use. In this thesis, the primary focus is on the use of the Choice Experiment (CE) method. The CE method is reviewed and then used to estimate the value of improvements in a number of components of ecological status on two Irish waterways (the Boyne and the Suir). Apart from CE method another stated preference approach to environmental valuation is also considered; the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). This thesis determines what value the targeted population of the two catchments place on the nonmarket economic benefits of moves towards GES by employing both approaches and various model specifications, while the applicability of Benefit Transfer (BT) method is also assessed under different tests. In addition, the design of the questionnaire used in the survey stage of the research, offered the possibility of investigating issues related to the effect of cognitive ability and psychometric factors on choice. Respondents with discontinuous preferences are identified and analysis is conducted to investigate the implications of not accounting for these preferences. Finally, due to experiencing protesting behaviour by a proportion of the sampling population an attempt is made to investigate the parameters that contributed to this inclination.

Abstract:
To start with, we can notice that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, the economic sphere is already clearly influencing the inheritance rules modification process. Admittedly, this is not an official statement. Writing the law n ° 2006-728 of June 23, 2006 which aims to reform the inheritances and liberalities regulations, the legislator prefers to highlight general objectives. This is a question of "simplifying", "speeding up" and "securing" the inheritance law. If all of this may seem very transparent at first glance, in reality, behind this "a little short profession of faith", there are some hidden economic objectives that cross the whole reform. The simplest example to cite is the survival of a company at the death of its manager. This objective is easily visible; it helps to facilitate the transmission of the economic unit, [...], but also to ensure its management continuity [...]. [...] Further, the dialectics followed by the legislator of the twenty-first century are not only for adaptation of legal norms to contemporary economic realities, but also for promoting these standards as instruments to increase the national economy's competitiveness. Legislation is now conceived as a driving force for the economic situation. [...] Multiplying trade, relaunching growth, enhancing French economic patrimony: these are some of the new values of inheritance regulations, as defined by the law of 23 June 2006. However, is this influence of the economic sphere entirely new or not ? Perhaps, we are dealing with culmination or prolongation of an old phenomenon ? We may indeed think that the legislators have already been concerned with adapting our old French law to the advent of proto-industry, as well as to the development of the trading economy ; in the same sense, it should be noted that, for the most part, the law n° 71-523 of July 3d, 1971 has done nothing more than making an adjustment of the liquidation rules to the monetary fluctuations of the post-war period. Without going further into the details, we can immediately notice how these questions lead us to the present study : a comparative analysis of "economic" and "non-economic" metasources, on the subject of influence of the economic sphere on the inheritance rights in its development since 1804

Abstract:
AbstractThe impact of a large inland earthquake is profound because of its intense shakes and the associated landslides and debris flows. The quake-induced landslides and debris flow are often the most devastating secondary effect of an earthquake in terms of all kinds of losses, causing long-lasting problems in post-quake rehabilitation activities. An earthquake-induced landslide is just one scene of ever-evolving mountain topography. Therefore, studying terrain dynamics is vital to comprehend the possibility of hazards and propose and apply rational rehabilitation tactics. Though serious, the damage caused by the Mid-Niigata Prefecture Earthquake of October 23, 2004, has given us a rare opportunity to study the landform changes caused by an earthquake that hit an active-folding mountainous terrain. To deal with rehabilitation problems in a scientific manner, a research program, “Earthquake damage in active-folding areas: the creation of a comprehensive data archive and suggestions for its application to remedial measures for civil-infrastructure systems,” was set up getting the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). This article reviews some significant findings obtained through this project and even beyond it. The results show that essential aspects of quake-caused problems were linked to deep-seated tectonic displacements, namely the internal driving stress field associated with earthquakes to evolve the active-folding terrain.

Abstract:
AbstractFollowing years of a liberal approach to digital technologies, platforms, services, and markets, the EU has stepped up its action in recent years. The adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation), OJ L 119, 1) in 2016 can be seen as a starting point for new regulations that are now enacted and proposed under the European Commission’s strategy “A Europe fit for the digital age.” This article will briefly summarize the contents of the GDPR as well as the Digital Services Act (DSA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 October 2022 on a Single Market for Digital Services and amending Directive 2000/31/EC (Digital Services Act), OJ L 277, 1), Digital Markets Act (DMA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/1925 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 September 2022 on contestable and fair markets in the digital sector and amending Directives (EU) 2019/1937 and (EU) 2020/1828 (Digital Markets Act), OJ L 265, 1), Data Governance Act (DGA) (Regulation (EU) 2022/868 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 May 2022 on European data governance and amending Regulation (EU) 2018/1724 (Data Governance Act), OJ L 152, 1), and the proposals for the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) (Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonized rules on artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act) and amending certain Union legislative acts, 21 April 2021, COM(2021) 206 final.) as well as the Data Act (Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on harmonized rules on fair access to and use of data (Data Act), 23 February 2022, COM(2022) 68 final.). We identify the underpinnings of the normative approach and its potential and shortcomings, thus providing an assessment of the role of Europe as a technology regulator more broadly and its relationship to digital humanism.

Full text
Abstract:
Kawasaki Heavy Industries launched the L20A gas turbine, rated at 18MW, in 2001. The design philosophy adopted for the turbine includes a high efficiency transonic axial-flow compressor with eight can-type combustors and a high turbine inlet temperature of 1250 Deg C. This results in a thermal efficiency of 35%, an electric efficiency of 50% for combined cycle power plants and an overall thermal efficiency of 81% for cogeneration systems. In addition, the NOx emissions from the combustor are lower than 23 ppm and the engine has a long service life. These features permit long-term continuous operations under various environmental limitations. Details are presented in 2002-GT-30255.(1) The first commercial unit has been in operation as a daily start and stop cogeneration plant in Kawasaki’s Akashi Works in Japan since October 2001. Accumulated operation hours are 5500 hours and 410 starts as of March 2004. Reliability higher than 99% has been demonstrated during this period. During the shop test and the commercial operation, some additional improvements have been developed for the compressor, turbine and combustor.

Anandapadmanaban, B., A. Babu, B. Babu, K. Dinesh, V. Ramanathan, and G. Srinivasan. "Life Extension of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor." In 18th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone18-29277.

Full text
Abstract:
The Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) is a loop type sodium cooled fast reactor located at Kalpakkam, India. The reactor went critical in October, 1985 with a core of 23 unique high Plutonium carbide fuel subassemblies and the reactor power was rated for 10.5MWt with peak linear heat rating of fuel at 320W/cm. The extension of the target burn-up of this fuel based on Post Irradiation Examination at different stages enabled progressive expansion of the core and increase in reactor power. The reactor has been operated upto a power level of 18.6MWt/3MWe with a sodium temperature of 482°C max. The reactor has completed 24 years of operation and is currently under periodic safety review by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board of India. As a part of the periodic safety review, equipment qualification status and ageing management studies have been presented to the regulators. Equipment qualification refers to the ability of the replaceable equipment to meet the functional requirements on demand, accomplished by periodic surveillance, maintenance and replacement. Ageing management addresses the residual life assessment of components which are passive, non-replaceable / replaceable with difficulty, taking into account their life degrading mechanisms. Over a period of time, based on the operational feedback, maintenance difficulties and obsolescence, several major components have been replaced. These include the Neutronic channels, UPS, computers of the Central Data Processing System, main boiler feed pumps, three control rod drive mechanisms, two control rods, central canal plug, deaerator lift pumps, reheaters of the steam water system, station batteries, DM plant and Nitrogen plant. The starting air system of the emergency diesel generators and isolation dampers of the reactor containment building have also been replaced. Regarding the non-replaceable components, residual life assessment has been carried out based on the operational history vis-a`-vis the design limits for each component. The life limiting mechanism of heat transport systems of FBTR are creep and fatigue. Since the reactor has operated only upto a temperature of 444°C till 2007, the creep effect is insignificant. The total number of thermal cycles seen by the reactor components as of 2007 was 163, as against the design cycle of 2000 for most of the components. Hence all the heat transport system components are as good as fresh ones. However, the major life limiting factor has been found to be the Neutronic fluence on the grid plate which supports the core. The fast flux at the grid plate location was measured using Np foils and the residual life of the reactor has been assessed to be 10.5 effective full power years. This paper details the life extension exercise being carried out for FBTR.
