Fairall, Lara, Merrick Zwarenstein, and Graham Thornicroft. The applicability of trials of complex mental health interventions. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199680467.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
The evidence on what interventions are currently known to be effective in mental health is summarized in the 2009 PLoS Medicine series on packages of care for mental, neurological, and substance-use disorders in LAMIC and the WHO mhGAP guidelines published in 2010. But far less is known about how best to deliver and scale-up these interventions in real-life settings. How to translate this evidence into practice, in ways that are culturally appropriate and sensitive has been identified as the key research priority in global mental health. This chapter discusses the potential contribution of trials to the genesis of interventions that are both effective and highly applicable to real-world settings by considering two frameworks : the development–evaluation–implementation process proposed by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in Britain in their 2000 and 2008 guidance on developing and evaluating complex interventions and the PRagmatic Explanatory Continuum Indicator Summary (PRECIS) tool.

Baum, Nehami. Mental Health Professionals Working in a Shared Traumatic Reality. Edited by Sara Maltzman. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199739134.013.46.

Full text
Abstract:
Professionals working in a shared traumatic reality—that is, in a disaster in their home community—are doubly exposed: both as individuals who experienced the disaster at first hand and as professionals who treat people traumatized by it. This chapter opens with a discussion of the development of the concept of “shared traumatic reality” and a presentation of the five key features of professionals’ double exposure: intrusive anxiety, lapses of empathy, immersion in professional role, role expansion, and changes in place and time of work. It then presents the findings of studies of Israeli mental health professionals who lived and worked near the Gaza border during the 2009 Gaza War. The findings of the quantitative study of 63 professionals, highlight the unique contribution that lapses of empathy made to the professionals’ distress and that their immersion in their professional role made to their personal growth. The qualitative study presents two cases, one of an emergency worker, the other of a clinician in the course of ongoing work, both of whom were confronted with the need to choose between attending to their children or to their clients. The cases convey something of the process by which the choice was made and the professionals’ feelings about their choice afterwards. They suggest that some of the widespread distress reported by professionals working in the wake of communal disasters derives not solely from exposure to their clients’ traumatic experience or even from their primary exposure to the disaster, but from their conflict of roles and loyalties.

Mucic, Davor. Refugee Telemental Health in Denmark. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190622725.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
For asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants in Denmark access to mental healthcare is a problem due to lack of clinicians who understand their language, culture, and special needs. It is well known that patients who do not speak the language of respective care providers report feeling discriminated against in clinical settings, whereas communicating with health professionals in a common language is associated with increased trust and confidence. That is probably why “ethnic matching” appears to be the most desirable model used in addressing language barriers and cultural disparities in mental healthcare provision. Since early 2000, a telepsychiatry-based ethnic-matching model has been developed and established in outskirt areas of Denmark through various pilot projects. The aim of this approach was to improve access to scarce, culturally appropriate care providers (i.e., culturally competent, bilingual clinicians) by the use of videoconferencing.

Arnett, Jeffrey Jensen, ed. The Oxford Handbook of Emerging Adulthood. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199795574.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Fifteen years ago, Jeffrey Jensen Arnett proposed emerging adulthood as a new life stage at ages 18-29, one distinct from both the adolescence that precedes it and the young adulthood that eventually follows. Rather than marrying and becoming parents in their early 20s, most people in developed countries now postpone these transitions until at least their late 20s, spending these years in self-focused explorations as they try out different possibilities in their education, careers, and relationships. Since Arnett proposed his theory of emerging adulthood in 2000, it has turned into a full-fledged academic field, and the ideas have been applied in practical areas as well, such as mental health and education. The Oxford Handbook of Emerging Adulthood brings together for the first time the wealth of theory and research that has developed in this new and burgeoning field. It includes chapters by many prominent scholars on a wide range of topics, such as brain development, relations with friends, relations with parents, expectations for marriage, sexual relationships, media use, substance use and abuse, and resilience. The chapters both summarize the existing research and point the way to new prospects for research in the years to come.
