Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the development of a more systematic approach to social behaviour change (Michie et al,2011) and the examination of a growing body of research in the public health world (CDC, 2000) that goes beyond just communication- and enforcement-based approaches to influencing health behaviour (McQuail, 2009; Rothschild, 1999). This understanding has been developing rapidly over recent years (NICE, 2007; 2014). Intervention organizing and planning systems such as social marketing (French et al., 2010), co-creation (Cottam and Leadbeater, 2004), and community engagement (Hills, 2004) are examples of how this new science is being operationalized in social policy delivery. This development, along with more general improvement in social policy implementation (Public Administration Select Committee, 2009), planning, and review (Australian Public Service Commission, 2007) has resulted in a growing consensus about how to establish, deliver, and evaluate more successful behavioural interventions focused on social good.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses professional skills and behaviour in ophthalmology. It starts off by detailing good medical practice, as set forth by the General Medical Council. It then addresses information governance, with a discussion of the Data Protection Act 1988, the roles of the Information Commissioner’s Office and the Caldicott Guardian, and the use or disclosure of confidential information, as well as the Freedom of Information Act 2000, electronic health records, and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ national ophthalmic audit programme. It then goes on to discuss clinical governance and risk management, clinical leadership, and NHS management, education, and training. Communication and consent, research, statistics, and the Ophthalmic Trainees’ Group are also addressed. The chapter concludes with a discussion concerning the safeguarding of patients.

Abstract:
This chapter examines three health determinants that lie inside of individuals’ own control: diet, physical activity, and substance use. The choices exhibited over these three classes of goods (or bads) have fundamental impacts on the health of the individual. Under each of them, three types of policy interventions are discussed: prices, regulations, and ‘nudges’. Generally, price interventions such as indirect taxation and subsidies are useful when demand is responsive to price changes, that is, on price-elastic goods. Regulations are required when consumers do not respond much to price changes, that is, for price-inelastic goods. The use of ‘nudges’ is based on the insight from behavioural economics that consumers are sensitive to how their choice sets are being presented. Through ‘choice architecture’ policymakers can help individuals make healthy choices rather than being victims of a short-sighted weak will.
