Abstract:
Abstract Due to the importance of the flower and ornamental plants sector in Brazilian agribusiness, studies that analyze the situation of its different segments can help to understand and establish policies and actions that support and stimulate their development. The objective was to analyze the profile and behavior of consumers in the productive chain of flowers and ornamental plants. For this, a questionnaire with direct questions was prepared and directed to consumers of flowers and ornamental plants. The application was made personally with direct approaches in places of great movement and specialized technological fairs, and also online through social media, using Google platform. The results were analyzed by comparing qualitative variables using the Chi-Square test. It was identified that the profile of consumers is concentrated in women who live in large cities, consuming an average of R$ 100.00 to R$ 200.00 over a period of one year.

Abstract:
A cross sectional study was designed to assess knowledge of dog owners towards dog rabies vaccination in rural communities in Odeda local government area of Ogun State. A structured questionnaire was administered to 268 dog owners. The questionnaire sought information on demographic characteristics of the dog owners, their association with dogs, and knowledge about dog rabies vaccine. Data obtained were analyzed using chi square and logistic regression with p value set at ≤ 0.05. Dog rabies vaccination coverage in the study area was 4.9%. Most of the respondents (67.2%) were not aware of dog rabies vaccine. Only 3% of the dog owners had good knowledge about rabies vaccination. Socio-economic factors that had significant association with knowledge level were age, occupation, educational level and marital status of the respondents. There was also significant association between age, religion, occupation, educational level, awareness on dog rabies vaccination, knowledge about dog rabies vaccination, danger posed by non vaccinated dogs to the public and other animals and the intention of dog owners to vaccinate their dogs against rabies. One hundred and eighty seven respondents (70%) declared their intention to vaccinate their dogs, although 82% affirmed willingness to pay for vaccination of their dogs against rabies; however the average amount indicated was only ₦200.00 ($0.57). In conclusion, it is free vaccination of dogs against rabies with an aggressive mass orientation on responsible dog ownership and enlightenment on fatality of clinical rabies through the mass media that can significantly alter the vaccination coverage in the studied community Key words: Rabies, vaccination, dogs, rural communities, intention

Abstract:
Taking the field of specialized press as a starting point, this study aims at determining and understanding the mechanisms of representation employed by the press for women, also known as women´s magazines and women´s pages. Stereotypes, understood as a representation tool, determine the actual models and icones for women in women´s magazines, and besides, permit comparison with the real situation of the contemporary Spanish woman. This paper also argues about the correspondence between media stereotypes and social stereotypes used in the interviews published by «Telva» in almost 40 years.

Abstract:
Political power as such is of a communicative nature, the process of governing is exercised through the communication using the language and terminology accepted in the certain communicative community. The presidency institution can also be viewed and studied as a multidimensional communicative community, with the head of the state as the main actor. Besides the president, that communicative community also includes the president’s “team” (administration, advisors, speechwriters, plenipotentiaries, etc.), as well as certain media, especially journalists of the presidential pool. The presidential discourse is formed within the said community. Given the increasing complexity of the communication phenomenon in the contemporary world, the study of the presidency from the point of view of the communication theory seems to be an urgent scientific task. The paper uses examples of the United States of America and the Russian Federation to examine the institution of presidency as a phenomenon belonging to the field of political communication. By the term “communication” or “speech communication” the author understands the interaction of communicants – addressee and addressee, speaker and audience – through the verbal exchange of information with different purposes. The main object of analysis is the presidents’ annual oral addresses – “Addresses to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation” and “Addresses to the US Congress”.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of aggravation of the internal political situation in Peru in the early 2000s. During the research the author conducted in-depth analysis and review papers, presented in mono-graphs, statistical studies, materials, media and periodicals, in which they touched upon the domestic policy of the government of Peru, and the activity of rebel forces in the early 21st century. Considerable attention is paid to the issue of the failure of the social and economic policy of the Peruvian government, after the defeat of the left-wing organization “Sendero Luminosoˮ in 1992, as one of the main reasons for the aggravation of the internal political situation in the early 2000s. The author analyzes the structural changes that took place both in the “Sendero Luminosoˮ organization itself and in its tactics and strategy. In conclusion, the author emphasizes the importance of social programs inspired either by the state itself or by the efforts of international organizations in preventing social problems from escalating into a state of bloody internal political conflict.

Abstract:
In recent years, significant changes in the human social environment have been associated with the development of computers and total digitalization. The educational environment, that largely determines the living space and takes much time of adolescents, has also been modified by these processes. The purpose of our study was searching for possible changes in cardiovascular parameters in adolescents during the period from 2004 through 2020 associated with the introduction of digital technologies to the educational environment. Methods. A comparative analysis of cardiovascular parameters was performed in female and male adolescents aged 13.9 to 15.4 years (57 adolescents in 2004 and 53 adolescents in 2020). We used a spiroartheriocardiorythmograph that allows recording of heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and spectral parameters of the HR variability and the variability of systolic (sBP) and diastolic (dBP) BP. These parameters were recorded at rest in the sitting position over 2 min. All studies were performed during school hours in February-March. Results. An increase in mean sBP values and an up to 55% increase in the proportion of adolescents with BP in the “hypertensive” range were found in 2020. The total power of the HR variability spectrum remained constant while the relative power of the LF range increased and the absolute power of the VLF range tended to decrease. In the sBP variability spectrum, increases in the total power and in all its ranges were detected but the relative power of the LF range decreased. In the dBP variability spectrum, the absolute power of the VLF range decreased while the total power remained constant. No changes in the stress index and the alpha index were detected. The time-related changes in these parameters were similar in male and female adolescents. Conclusion. These findings indicate significant shifts in the cardiovascular parameters of adolescents recorded during school hours from 2004 through 2020. This may reflect a school-associated increase in the psycho-emotional tension of schoolchildren and can be interpreted as an adaptive response to changes in the educational environment, first of all its digitalization.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the processes associated with learning the Tatar (literary) language in Omsk Region (in the regional capital and rural areas) in the 1990s - 2000s. The sources are the local media of the Omsk Irtysh region published in the 1990s -2000s, documents of the Tatar ethnic and cultural associations and interviews with their leaders, as well as statistical data. The situation with studying the Tatar language in that period is described separately for the regional capital and districts of Omsk Region. The article provides the data on the number of schools where the Tatar language was taught, number of students who studied it, and process of organizing education and training of teachers. Some current problems of studying the Tatar language in the Omsk Irtysh region are described, including a small number of students who attended the Tatar language elective courses in Omsk, lack of experienced teaching staff, shortage of teachers, and insufficient funding. It had been established that the main form of studying the native language for the Omsk Tatars were elective courses, while in the districts of Omsk Region, the Tatar language was included in the school curriculum as a school subject. The Tatar ethnic and cultural associations played an important role in organization of teaching the native language in the schools of Omsk and Omsk Region. Tatar activists closely monitored the situation, quickly responded to requests from Tatars to teach the Tatar language in schools, kept statistical data, and elaborated the “Program for Tatar Language Preservation for the Period from 1999 to 2003 in Omsk Region.”

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Myelofibrosis (MF) is one of the myeloproliferative neoplasms BCR-ABL1-negative. It is a rare disease, difficult to diagnose particularly with changes of the diagnosis criteria in the last twenty years. It is also difficult to treat MF because of lack of specific dug and/or validated therapeutic scheme. Scarce epidemiological data were available on MF and we used databases from three specialized registries in France to evaluated incidence rate, survival and treatment strategy used in the general population. Methods: Cases diagnosed with Myelofibrosis (ICD-O-3: 9961/3) in Gironde, Côte d'Or and Basse-Normandie covering 3 530 000 inhabitants, between 01/01/20014 and 12/31/2014 were registered. Data were collected from laboratories and clinical charts. The vital status was updated at 01/01/2017. Incidence, clinical characteristics, survival and treatment were studied using the STATA-V13 software. Results: They were 288 cases, 68% being male with a median age of 73 y-o. 65% of the cases were died at 5 years. 12% of the cases occurred after a previous solid tumor and 5% were secondary to a previous hemopathy. 62% had comorbidities at diagnosis in which 50% were cardiac conditions. At diagnosis, 83% had a splenomegaly; blast and bone marrow cells were present in peripheral blood in respectively 30% and 73%. Jak2 V617F was found in 88%, CALR in 8% and MPL mutation in 4% of the cases. The most frequent karyotypic abnormality was the del 20q (20%). IPSS score was calculated in 34% of the cases and 20% of them had a low risk score. 75% of cases were treated: 60% had hydroxycarbamide, 29% had ruxolutinib phosphate and 10% had thalidomide. Hydroxycarbamide was used in 48% of the cases in Basse Normandie, 68% in Côte d'Or and 64% in Gironde (p=0.001). EPO was used in 48% of cases and corticoids in a quarter of them. The transformation rate into acute myeloid leukemia was 25% in Côte d'Or, 12% in Gironde and 9% in Basse-Normandie (p=0.01). The 5 years observed survival was 25% and the 5-years net survival was 36%, without difference between male and female. It was 66% in cases under 55 y-o and was 25% in patients older than 75 y-o (p<0.001). The age-standardized 5-years survival was 50% in Basse Normandie, 42% in Côte d'Or and 37% in Gironde (ns). Conclusions: This study highlights biological and clinical characteristics of this rare disease in France. It also emphasizes some differences in the way of taking in charge these patients and in their survival rate. Even if it was not always statistically significant, patients from Basse Normandie appeared to receive less hydroxycarbazine, had a lower rate of AML transformation and had a slight better survival. This type of study should be extended to French cancer registries data for validation on a larger cohort and for guidance in patient management. Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Cocoa, one of the richest dietary sources of polyphenols has been studied for its health promoting effects, but how long-term consumption of cocoa affects age-associated health and lifespan is not well defined. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of long-term cocoa consumption on age-associated health and lifespan in C. elegans METHODS: The standard E. coli OP50 diet of wild type C. elegans was supplemented with cocoa powder starting from L1 stage until they die. Body length and area were measured as indicators of worm nutrition. Age associated health was determined at different stages of life as day 4, day 8 and day 12 using worm locomotion, thermotolerance, cognition and mitochondrial function. In addition, lifespan was evaluated. RESULTS: Cocoa improved age-associated decline in neuromuscular function. Both mean and median lifespan were extended by cocoa supplementation. However, maximum lifespan was not affected. Cocoa showed beneficial effects on thermotolerance at all ages (more prominent effects at young (day 4) and middle (day 8) age. Further, consumption of cocoa improved age-related learning deficits, short-term memory loss and mitochondrial dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term cocoa consumption seemed to improve age-associated health and extends lifespan in C. elegans

Abstract:
Goodbye Brigadoon examines the shifting role media production plays in the economic and cultural strategies of global cities in small market nations, specifically Glasgow, Scotland. In particular, this project focuses on the formation of a digital media village along the banks of the River Clyde to argue the site constitutes a logical component to Glasgow’s ongoing transformation into a cosmopolitan center. Yet, as the regional government’s economic strategies and policy directives work to transform the abandoned waterfront into a center of cultural activity, this project also underscores the contradictory cultural dynamics to emerge from media production’s new role in the post-industrial city. At its core, the media hub reveals a regional government more interested in the technology used to deliver “national” stories than the manner of the stories themselves or the cultural practices responsible for creating them. Indeed, Goodbye Brigadoon is most interested in how media professionals based at the emergent cluster negotiate a sense of cultural identity and creative license against the institutional constraints, policy matters, and commercial logic they also must navigate in their workaday rituals. Ultimately, the conclusions offered in this project argue for a more complicated conception of the global-local location where these professionals work. Glasgow’s digital media village, in other words, is much more than an innocuous site of competitive advantage, urban regeneration, and job growth. It is best understood as a site of intense social struggle and unequal power relations where local mediamakers often find the site’s impetus for multiplatform media production an institutionally enforced false promise at odds with the realities of creative labor in the city.

Abstract:
The aim of this master´s thesis is to investigate how Aftonbladet/Sportbladet is describing the Swedish national men team in football during the European Championship years 1992, 2004 and 2008. Reading over 200 articles gave me an excellent overview of the differences and similarities between the three chosen periods. The theoretical framework has three key terms which circulates around the paper. The terms are discourse, stereotype and national identity. Several results are presented and discussed; some are included in this abstract. There are huge reporting differences between the chosen periods which involve attention on one or several chosen players from the Swedish national team. The attention around the Swedish national team got larger during the European Championship 2004 and even larger during the European Championship 2008. The conclusion of this master´s thesis shows how important media is for the world of sports and in this case the world of football.

Daniel C Hallin and Paolo Mancini's Comparing Media Systems (2004) has been hailed as an important contribution to understanding the inter-relationship between the media and political systems. The work was, however, based on a study of 18 stable, mature and highly developed democracies either in Europe or in North America. As an emerging democracy that has recently undergone dramatic change in both its political system and its media, South Africa's inclusion poses particular challenges to Hallin and Mancini's Three Models paradigm. This thesis focuses on the South African print media and tests both the paradigm's theoretical underpinnings as well as its four principle dimensions of analysis: political parallelism, state intervention, development of a mass market and journalistic professionalisation. A range of insights and a number of modifications are proposed. This thesis is based on interviews with South Africa's most senior media executives and editors, a comprehensive study of the relevant literature and 15 years of personal experience as a political analyst, columnist and parliamentary correspondent covering South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy. The thesis sheds new light on the functioning and applicability of the Three Models comparative paradigm as well as on the development and future trajectory of South African print media journalism.

Humphreys, Alison M. (Sal). "Massively Multiplayer Online Games. Productive players and their disruptions to conventional media practices." Thesis, QUT, 2005.

Find full text
Abstract:
Summary This thesis explores how massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), as an exemplary new media form, disrupt practices associated with more conventional media. These intensely social games exploit the interactivity and networks afforded by new media technologies in ways that generate new challenges for the organisation, control and regulation of media. The involvement of players in constituting these games – through their production of game-play, derivative works and strong social networks that drive the profitability of the games – disrupts some of the key foundations that underlie other publication media. MMOGs represent a new and hybrid form of media – part publication and part service. As such they sit within a number of sometimes contradictory organising and regulatory regimes. This thesis examines the negotiations and struggles for control between players, developers and publishers as issues of ownership, governance and access arise out of the new configurations. Using an ethnographic approach to gather information and insights into the practices of players, developers and publishers, this project identifies the characteristics of the distributed production network in this experiential medium. It explores structural components of successful interactive applications and analyses how the advent of player agency and the shift in authorship has meant a shift in control of the text and the relations that surround it. The integration of social networks into the textual environment, and into the business model of the media publishers has meant commerce has become entwined with affect in a new way in this medium. Publishers have moved into the role of both property managers, of the intellectual property associated with the game content, and community managers. Intellectual property management is usually associated with the reproduction and distribution of finished media products, and this sits uneasily with the performative and mutable form of this medium. Service provision consists of maintaining the game world environment, community management, providing access for players to other players and to the content generated both by the developers and the other players. Content in an MMOG is identified in this project as both the ‘tangible’ assets of code and artwork, rules and text, and the ‘intangible’ or immaterial assets of affective networks. Players are no longer just consumers of media, or even just active interpreters of media. They are co-producing the media as it is developed. This thesis frames that productiveness as unpaid labour, in an attempt to denaturalise the dominant discourse which casts players as consumers. The regulation of this medium is contentious. Conventional forms of media regulation – such as copyright, or content regulation regimes are inadequate for regulating the hybrid service/publication medium. This thesis explores how the use of contracts as the mechanism which constitutes the formal relations between players, publishers and developers creates challenges to some of the regimes of juridical and political rights held by citizens more generally. This thesis examines the productive practices of players and how the discourses of intellectual property and the discourses of the consumer are mobilised to erase the significance of those productive contributions. It also shows, using a Foucauldian analysis of the power negotiations, that players employ many counter-strategies to circumvent the more formal legal structures of the publishers. The dialogic relationship between players, developers and publishers is shown to mobilise various discursive constructions of the role of each. The outcome of these ongoing negotiations may well shape future interactive applications and the extent to which their innovative capacities will be available for all stakeholders to develop.

Rimmer, Matthew. "The Pirate Bazaar: The Social Life of Copyright Law." Thesis, The Faculty of Law, The University of New South Wales, 2001. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/86581/1/fulltext.pdf.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a cultural history of Australian copyright law and related artistic controversies. It examines a number of disputes over authorship, collaboration, and appropriation across a variety of cultural fields. It considers legal controversies over the plagiarism of texts, the defacing of paintings, the sampling of musical works, the ownership of plays, the co-operation between film-makers, the sharing of MP3 files on the Internet, and the appropriation of Indigenous culture. Such narratives and stories relate to a broad range of works and subject matter that are protected by copyright law. This study offers an archive of oral histories and narratives of artistic creators about copyright law. It is founded upon interviews with creative artists and activists who have been involved in copyright litigation and policy disputes. This dialogical research provides an insight into the material and social effects of copyright law. This thesis concludes that copyright law is not just a ‘creature of statute’, but it is also a social and imaginative construct. In the lived experience of the law, questions of aesthetics and ethics are extremely important. Industry agreements are quite influential. Contracts play an important part in the operation of copyright law. The media profile of personalities involved in litigation and policy debates is pertinent. This thesis is a study of the Fisher Price PXL 2000 camera and the artists and amateurs who make films and videos with this technology. The Pixelvision camera records video onto an audiocassette; its image is low-resolution, black and white. Fisher Price marketed the PXL 2000 to children in 1987, but withdrew the camera after one year. Despite its lack of commercial success, the camera became popular with avant-garde artists, amateur film- and videomakers and collectors, sparking a renewed interest in the obsolete camera. An online community has built up around the format, providing its members with information on how to modify the camera to make it compatible with contemporary digital equipment. Although Pixelvision garners little recognition from mainstream culture, the camera's hipster cachet and perceived rarity has driven up prices in the community and in auctions. This thesis examines the position of the PXL 2000 camera within the history of moving image technology, and in the context of today's digital video equipment. How has this obsolete video camera made the transition from analog to digital? The thesis also explores Pixelvision's position in the cultural hierarchy of media, as well as the motivations of artists and users who are creating with the camera today, as it moves further and further into its obsolescence.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Attention to the use of new media by social movements rose rapidly following groundbreaking global protests: The Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and the "Indignados" Movement in Spain. However, determinism and rhetoric of newness have led to phrases like "Twitter Revolution," while tools and gadgets often overshadow human agency and grassroots efforts. In fact, media and grassroots strategies have worked hand-in-hand and have been pivotal to social movements throughout history. Through a comparative analysis of the Farm Workers Movement of the 1960s and the contemporary Immigrant Youth Movement, this work examines media strategies by emphasizing concrete media practices of movement actors. With a grounded approach that incorporates participant observation, semi-structured interviews, archival research, and literature reviews, this study provides cross-historical insight into media strategies in social movements. Particularly, this work covers external and internal media strategies, media practice, framing, community media practice, and capacity building. It concludes with a comparative analysis of how movement media strategies are related to movement goals, aims, and outcomes.

Abstract:
AbstractOne of the original purposes of schools in the United States was to prepare students to inherit democracy (Mann, An oration, delivered before the authorities of the City of Boston, July 4, 1842. WB Fowle and N. Capen, 1842; Krutka, 2014). Given the trends in youth civic participation over the last few decades, civic education is not effectively working to support this goal. Research has shown effective civic education practices (e.g., participatory pedagogies, an open classroom climate, service learning), but little civic education follows these suggestions (Torney-Purta et al., Citizenship and education in twenty-eight countries: Civic knowledge and engagement at age fourteen. IEA Secretariat, 2001). Further, most teachers report not having sufficient time, preparation, or resources to teach civics effectively (Hahn, Challenges to civic education in the United States. In J. Torney-Purta, J. Schwille, & J. A. Amadeo (Eds.), Civic education across countries: Twenty-four national case studies from the IEA civic education project (pp. 583–607). IEA Secretariat, 1999). Social media could provide a way for teachers to deepen their teaching of civics by making it more accessible and more relevant, and by having students engage in civic participation in real time.

AbstractThis chapter presents a rethinking of the relationship between ethnography and so-called big social data as being comparable to those between a sum and its parts (Strathern 1991/2004). Taking cue from Tim Ingold’s one world anthropology (2018) the chapter argues that relations between ethnography and social media data can be established as contrapuntal. That is, the types of material are understood as different, yet fundamentally interconnected. The chapter explores and qualifies this affinity with the aim of identifying potentials and further questions for digital migration research. The chapter is based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out with Syrian refugees and solidarians in the Danish–Swedish borderlands in 2018–2019 as well as data collected for 2011–2018 from 200 public Facebook pages run by solidarity organisations, NGOs, and informal refugee welcome and solidarity groups.

Abstract:
Yuri manga are focused on the representation of sentimental relations between girls. Despite still being a niche within the manga landscape, the popularity of this genre in terms of number of productions and fans is increasing, and in the last few years its fame has been expanding outside Japan as well. As a manga genre, yuri developed since the mid-2000s. Notwithstanding being a novel genre, yuri narratives are deeply embedded into the heritage of the late Meiji-early Shōwa shōjo bunka (girls’ culture), and especially into the so-called “esu kankei” relationships, girl/girl bonds developing in girls’ schools at the time. The aim of this article is double-folded: from one hand, I will highlight and discuss the birth of yuri manga, analysing the re-elaboration of the heritage of shōjo bunka and its cultural productions - such as Yoshiya Nobuko’s Hana Monogatari - into the first examples of yuri manga, to demonstrate the intermediality and intertextuality of these media. On the other hand, I will map the development of yuri manga through the 2000s, stressing onto the increasing relevance given by these narratives to LGBTQ+ related themes, along with the detachment from the influence of shōjo bunka.

Avipsu Halder’s essay distils a watershed moment when big private broadcasters muscled out state media, and sports became vulnerable to global market forces. Using a political economy perspective the author points out that the socioeconomic groups that dominate the state and its agencies are also at the helm in sports, especially cricket and its governance. Further the differences among these forces over India’s globalisation played itself out in the disputes over broadcast rights and regulations in the early years. The author examines two moments, one, the Hero Cup and how the Doordarshan lost its rights to broadcast. and the allocation of television rights for Indian Premier League matches in and after 2004. In both cases the roles played by the state, its media arm, a private players and the cricketing bodies.

Social and group interactions in online and virtual communities develop and evolve from expressions of human agency. The exploration of the emergence of agency in social situations is of critical importance to understanding the psychology of agency and group interactions in social media. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the prevalence of agency in existing research in educational psychology relative to its potential impact on the bourgeoning field of identity in social media. Published articles from leading theorists in identity theory, agency, life course studies, and educational psychology provide a framework in which agentic behavior and digital identity formation in social media can be studied. Through an examination of Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory of Agency (Bandura, 1989, 2000, 2006), this chapter identifies and discusses agentic behavior evident in social media and its potential impacts for research and practice.

We revisit the effectiveness of IFRS adoption for FDI attractiveness by considering the adopting country's institutional structure. Attention was on the extent of corruption control (as a measure of institutional structure). Data was tested on 42 African countries for the period 2001-2012. Using the Panel Corrected Standard Error (PSCE) estimation technique, our result suggest that the effect of IFRS adoption on foreign investment differs based on the level of corruption control instituted in the sample countries. When the variable – IFRS adoption, was tested for the sample with corruption control below the median value, the coefficient was either negative or insignificant. However, the opposite was seen for the category of countries with corruption control above the median value. This result was robust to the inclusion of alternative measures of corruption, foreign investment, and control of global financial crisis and legal origin of the country.

In this chapter, the award-winning television commercials of Turkey's Cristal Apple Advertising Competition are studied in terms of their use of humor. The commercials are content analyzed, and humorous devices are organized according to the studies of Sterthal and Craig (1973), Kelly and Solomon (1975), Buijen and Valkenburg (2004), and Yee (2011). The humorous devices are listed according to four distinct product categories—banking, decoration, detergents and household cleaners, and foods—and determined according to four distinct categories designed by Weinberger, Campbell, and Brody (1994). All the award-winning advertisements are analyzed according to humorous devices used and product types comparatively. As a result, it is observed that there are significant differences in terms of humor use in advertisements in different sectors. Accordingly, the most humorous advertisements are in the food sector. The humor devices used in the advertisements differentiate from year to year.

Abstract:
Abstract Large volume of CO2 injection into the saline aquifer is considered to be the high potential CO2 storage method. Until now, the field of CO2 injectivity has been completely dominated by salt precipitation – and by far the most studied mechanism for the loss of injectivity. In this paper, our aim is to focus on recent findings on CO2 injectivity impairment by fines migration that should not be overlooked. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art knowledge obtained from theoretical, field studies, and experimental observations on CO2 injectivity impairment by fines migration in saline aquifers in the sense of CO2 storage. By gathering various data from books, DOE papers, field reports and SPE publications, a detailed and high quality data set for fines migration during CO2 injection into saline aquifer is created. Key reservoir/fluid/rock information, operational parameters and petrophysical evaluations are assessments are provided, providing the basis for comprehensive data analysis. The results are presented in terms of boxplot and histogram, where histogram displays the distribution of each parameter and identifies the best suitable ranges for best practices; boxplots are used to detect the special cases and summarize the ranges of each parameter. Previous coreflooding experiments concluded that salt precipitation, mineral precipitation, dissolution and mobilization are the main mechanisms that caused CO2 injectivity impairments. Dissolution of carbonate minerals is dominant and it increases the poro spaces and connectivity of sandstone core samples. Conversely, detachment, precipitation of salt and clay minerals and deposition of fines particles decreases the flow are and even clog the flow paths despite net dissolution. However, the results are case dependent and lack generality in terms of quantifying the petrophysical damage. It has been highlighted that injection scheme (flow rate, time frame), mineral composition (clay content, sensitive minerals), particulate process in porous media (pore geometry, particle and carrier fluid properties), and thermodynamic conditions (pressure, temperature, salinity, CO2 and brine composition) give substantial effect on the fines migration during CO2 injection. Additionally, the current experimental work is limited to rendering time and difficult to identify the dynamic process of fines migration during CO2 injection. A list of potential additional work has therefore been presented in this paper including the establishment of microscopic visualization of CO2-brine-rock interactions with representative pore-network under reservoir pressure and temperature. This is the first paper to summarize the contribution of fines migration on CO2 injectivity impairment in saline aquifer.

Abstract:
Bayonet tubes, simple refluent heat exchangers, are widely used to heat or cool a media when the heating/cooling agent is readily accessible from one side only. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the heat transfer performance of bayonet tubes. The majority of these studies focus on the heat transfer in the annular section and little on the end surface. This paper presents a numerical simulation of the laminar flow and heat transfer in a bayonet tube. The simulation is first validated by the experimental data in the literature. The flow and heat transfer in bayonet tubes are then investigated with both flat and curved end surfaces. Both local and average Nusselt number on the end surfaces are calculated under various Re and geometry conditions. Effect of the end surface curvature is studied by comparing the performances of the flat and curved ended bayonet tubes.

"Multiple Pathway Health Risk Assessment and Multimedia Environmental Monitoring Programs for a Municipal Waste Resource Recovery Facility in Maryland." In 12th Annual North American Waste-to-Energy Conference. ASMEDC, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/nawtec12-2207.

Full text
Abstract:
Following a 1986 decision by Montgomery County in Maryland to construct a municipal waste resource recovery facility near the town of Dickerson, the local community expressed concern regarding the potential human health effects from air emissions of dioxins and trace metals released through the stack of the proposed facility. To address this concern, the County conducted health risk studies and ambient monitoring programs before and after the facility became operational. The purpose of the health risk studies was to determine potential cancer and non-cancer risks to the nearby residents from the operations of the facility. The purpose of the ambient monitoring programs was to determine if any changes would occur in the ambient levels of certain target chemicals in the environmental media, and if such changes can be attributed to the operations of the facility. Accordingly, the County conducted a multiple pathway health risk assessment in 1989 prior to the construction of the facility. The pre-operational health risk assessment was based on estimated stack engineering parameters and available stack emissions data from municipal waste resource recovery facilities that were operating in the United States, Canada and Europe during the 1980’s. The health risk assessment used established procedures that were accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and many state agencies at that time. The Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) became operational in the spring of 1995. The facility is equipped with the state-of-the-art air pollution control (APC) equipment including a dry scrubber-fabric filter baghouse system to control organics and trace metals, ammonia injection system to control nitrogen oxides, and activated carbon injection system to control mercury. In 2003, the County retained ENSR International to update the 1989 health risk assessment study. In the 2003 operational-phase update, as-built engineering data and measured stack emissions data from a total of eighteen quarterly stack emissions tests were used. The study was conducted in accordance with the U.S. EPA’s Human Health Risk Assessment Protocol for Hazardous Waste Combustion Facilities published in 1998 [1], and an Errata, published in 1999 [2]. Both the 1989 study and the 2003 study demonstrated that there is a very low chance (less than one chance in a million) for occurrence of cancer and no adverse non-cancer health effects to the nearby community as a result of exposure to facility-related emissions. The multi-media ambient monitoring programs were conducted in abiotic and biotic environmental media. These programs included an air-monitoring component and a non-air monitoring component. The pre-operational phase of the air media and non-air media monitoring was conducted in 1994–1995. The pre-operational program was designed to produce baseline data for target chemicals in both air and non-air media. The operational-phase air media monitoring was conducted in 1997 and 2003. The operational-phase non-air media monitoring was conducted in 1997 and 2001. Target chemicals monitored in both air and non-air media included polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDDs/PCDFs) and selected toxic metals (arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel). The non-air media included crops, farm pond surface water and fish tissue, and cow’s milk. The ambient levels of target chemicals monitored in the operational phase of the facility (1997, 2001 and 2003) demonstrated no measurable difference from the ambient levels of these chemicals monitored in the pre-operational phase (1994–95) of the facility, in both the air media and non-air media. The results of the health risk studies and ambient monitoring programs demonstrate that municipal waste combustion facilities that are equipped with the state-of-the-art air pollution control equipment pose no significant health risk to the population.

Abstract:
Meniscal injuries frequently occur in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Tears in the menisci that occur acutely with ACL injury are located either medially or laterally, but in ACL deficient knees chronic instability most commonly leads to meniscal tears in the posterior horn of medial meniscus (Smith & Barrett, 2001). Levy et al. (1982) suggested that medial meniscus might act as a mechanical wedge preventing tibial anterior translation due to its firm attachment to the tibia at the posterior horn. Previous biomechanical studies infer the role of the meniscus through measurements of alternations in forces or knee motions (Shoemaker & Markolf, 1986; Allen, 2000), however no study has provided clear images of the motion or deformation of the meniscus itself. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of anterior cruciate ligament resection, as well as partial and complete meniscectomies on knee kinematics in response to anterior loading. Application of loads during magnetic resonance (MR) imaging allows us to visualize the motion and deformation of the menisci, and therefore obtain a more clear understanding of its role in knee stability.

Abstract:
After a short introduction on media evolution and their implications on human history the paper presents the results of two experiences held by the authors while using new technologies in disseminating bibliographical and historical information. The former experience concerns the Web publication of a bibliography on Beneventan manuscripts and arises from the need of overcoming the long edition times of printed information. It also proposes itself as an online resource for all researchers involved in studies on the South Italian book script in the Middle Ages. The latter one originates from most recent studies on women copyists in the Middle Ages and uses an online database to spread news on this subject. The paper then analyzes analogies and differences between the two experiences and suggests, at last, they can be seen as a source of online information for scholars, thus representing a first step towards the construction of new paradigms of knowledge and research in historical studies.

Vadnjal, Aleksander, and Ivan Catton. "Optimization of Absorption in a Porous Media." In ASME 2004 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2004. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2004-60140.

Full text
Abstract:
A majority of past investigations focused on solutions to a specific optimization task with a very limited number of spatial parameters to be varied, usually a fixed geometric configuration, that was tuned in their search for a maximum level of acoustic energy absorption. This approach is a “single-scale” approach yielding an optimum for a certain morphology and flow intensity without giving an explanation for why it was achieved. Without an explanation, there is no guidance on how to change the design to improve its performance. For each new morphology, the experiment, whether real or numerical, needs to be performed again. In the acoustics industry there are countless research studies devoted to this problem. Travkin et al. [1] developed a mathematical basis, using volume averaging theory (VAT), see also Whitaker [2], and models for optimization of a heterogeneous, hierarchical scaled media. The treatment of the optimization process can be applied to any specific hierarchical heterostructure with the aim to optimize its performance. In this work, developments of VAT to describe transport phenomena in heterogeneous media are applied to optimization of acoustic energy absorption by a heterogeneous media. The enhancement of acoustic energy absorption is stated mathematically in a way that the lower scale viscous dissipation and the performance of the total device are incorporated for optimization. The VAT equations derived by Vadnjal and Catton [3] are the basis for a model that successfully describes the non-homogeneous nature of the porous media, allowing optimization of a heterogeneous structure for optimum performance.

Abstract:
In modern warfare, the first widely acknowledged scientific study and documented case of environmental damage during conflict was the (direct and deliberate) use of Agent Orange and other toxic chemicals by US forces, from 1961-1971, during the Vietnam War in a policy known as herbicide. The Vietnam War has been relatively well documented for the sheer horror and magnitude of the devastation to natural habitats and because it was the first war where television and global media brought vivid images and accounts into people’s homes, making the war a matter of political and public conscience This helped stir academic and scientific interest and facilitated evidence collection and documentation of environmental damages. This helpdesk report is a rapid literature review on the main environmental impacts of war and conflict, drawing primarily on academic, and peer reviewed literature and only some policy and practitioner sources, as per the request. Where current situations are discussed, such as the ongoing Ukraine war, a few blogs are referred to. Within the literature focused on the environmental impacts of conflict, common case studies include: the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) bombing of Kosovo (1999), and the conflict in the Donbas region of Ukraine (2014). Interestingly there is comparatively less literature on the conflicts in Afghanistan (2001-2021), the Iraq-Iran War (1980-1988), the Gulf Wars (1991 and 2003), the Yemeni civil war (2014 – present) and the ongoing war in Syria (since 2011) despite their relatively greater severity, intensity and duration.

Jorgensen, Frieda, John Rodgers, Daisy Duncan, Joanna Lawes, Charles Byrne, and Craig Swift. Levels and trends of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter spp. from chicken in the UK. Food Standards Agency, September 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.dud728.

Full text
Abstract:
Campylobacter spp. are the most common bacterial cause of foodborne illness in the UK, with chicken considered to be the most important vehicle of transmission for this organism. It is estimated there are 500,000 cases of campylobacteriosis in the UK annually, with Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli) accounting for approximately 91% and 8 % of infections, respectively. Although severe infection in humans is uncommon, treatment is seldom needed for human infection but usually involves the administration of a macrolide (e.g., azithromycin) or a fluoroquinolone (e.g., ciprofloxacin). An increased rate of resistance in Campylobacter in chicken to such antimicrobials could limit effective treatment options for human infections and it is therefore important to monitor changes in rates of resistance over time. In this report we analysed trends in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in C. jejuni and C. coli isolated from chicken in the UK. The chicken samples were from chicken reared for meat (ie. broiler chicken as opposed to layer chicken (ie. egg-laying chicken)) and included chicken sampled at slaughterhouses as well as from retail stores in the UK. Datasets included AMR results from retail surveys of Campylobacter spp. on chicken sampled in the UK from various projects in the time period from 2001 to 2020. In the retail surveys, samples were obtained from stores including major and minor retail stores throughout the UK (in proportion to the population size of each nation) and Campylobacter spp. testing was performed using standard methods with the majority of isolates obtained from direct culture on standard media (mCCDA). Data from national scale surveys of broiler chicken, sampling caecal contents and carcase neckskins at slaughterhouses, undertaken by APHA in 2007/2008, and between 2012 and 2018 were also included in the study. In the APHA-led surveys, Campylobacter were isolated using standard culture methods (culture onto mCCDA) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by a standard microbroth dilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of isolates. Care was taken when comparing data from different studies as there had been changes to the threshold used to determine if an isolate was susceptible or resistant to an antimicrobial in a small number of scenarios. Harmonised thresholds (using epidemiological cut-off (ECOFF) values) were employed to assess AMR with appropriate adjustments made where required to allow meaningful comparisons of resistance prevalence over time. Data from additional isolates where resistance to antimicrobials were predicted from genome sequence data were also considered.

Cameroon: Peer education and youth-friendly media reduce risky sexual behavior. Population Council, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh2003.1009.

Full text
Abstract:
Cameroonian researchers at the Institute of Behavioral Studies and Research (IRESCO), with support from FRONTIERS, conducted an operations research project between 2000 and 2002 to assess strategies to encourage abstinence, increase contraceptive use, and reduce sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates among sexually active youth. The intervention combined peer-education strategies with media campaigns to promote healthy behavior among youth in the Mokolo neighborhood of Yaoundé. IRESCO trained 49 peer educators aged 19–25 in reproductive health (RH) communication strategies. The team coordinated educational talks, counseling sessions, conferences, and cultural and athletic events; produced comic books and brochures; and sold French and English editions of Among Youth magazine, featuring celebrity interviews and information on RH, unwanted pregnancy, and STI transmission. IRESCO evaluated the intervention’s impact through baseline and endline surveys of 2,500 youth in Mokolo and the control site, New Bell, in Douala. This brief concludes that urban youth in Cameroon are knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS and the risks of early pregnancy, but their behavior often fails to reflect their knowledge. Peer-education programs targeting youth through one-on-one counseling, theatrical performances, youth magazines, and sporting events increases abstinence and fidelity and improves consistent and correct condom use.
