Abstract:
Realtà e memoria di una disfatta does not address either the causes of the Six Day War or the consequences that the military conflict had for Israelis and Palestinians, about which much has been written. It focuses instead on the impact of the war on Arab countries, and the weighty legacy left by the defeat of 1967, which has been much less studied. There are several references to this in the short essay by Samir Kassir, L'infelicità araba, published posthumously in Italy in 2006. In his analysis, Kassir warns against falling into the dual trap that has ensnared the Arab world for the last forty years: on the one hand the Orientalist reading that lays the blame on Islam for the delayed modernisation of this part of the world, and on the other the temptation to heap responsibility for all evils on the West. To avoid this risk, as Kassir sees it, the Arabs have to take their destiny into their own hands, shrugging off victimism and coming to terms with modernity.

This article appears in theOxford Handbook of New Audiovisual Aestheticsedited by John Richardson, Claudia Gorbman, and Carol Vernallis. This chapter explores audiovisual intensification in post-1997 Hong Kong action films, focusing on the performance of everyday activities in Johnnie To’s 2004Breaking News (Dai si gin, 2004) This film’s heightened depictions of materiality, temporality, and the ordinary provide a means to register multisensory experience in a changing urban society. Sound and music work alongside the narrative and the mise-en-scène, creating a contrapuntal weave of lines through the film. Without relying on dialogue,Breaking Newsreveals the weight and dimensionality of the human in ways specific to both digital cinema and Hong Kong experience. Everyday objects, and the quotidian activities associated with them, are granted a strong audiovisual presence; this helps create an intensified ordinary that deepens and supplements the film’s status as action cinema.

Abstract:
Four to five per cent of the Western population suffers from chronic diarrhoea (defined as the passage of >3 stools per day, for >4 weeks), with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) being the commonest cause in 20–40-year-old patients. It is the commonest reason for referral to secondary care gastroenterology clinics. The list of possible causes of chronic diarrhoea is long but, in the absence of rectal bleeding, loss of weight, or abnormal blood tests, it is unlikely to be due to a serious illness. Laboratory investigations should include serum glucose, electrolytes, renal and liver tests, full blood count, thyroid tests, a coeliac antibody test, C-reactive protein (CRP) measurement to check for systemic inflammation, faecal fat and elastase estimation to check pancreatic exocrine function, faecal microscopy, and culture, although this is insensitive for giardiasis. In young patients with typical features of IBS, these laboratory investigations can be abbreviated to include only glucose, electrolytes, the coeliac antibody test, CRP measurement, and thyroid tests. Endoscopic examination of the large and small intestines is generally only required where there is a suspicion of coeliac disease, chronic giardiasis, microscopic colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, or colorectal cancer. A therapeutic trial of metronidazole for giardiasis is justified where this seems a likely diagnosis.

Kurzfassung Die TA Luft [1] wurde am 24. Juli 2002 veröffentlicht und ist am 01.10.2002 in Kraft getreten. Sie hatte damals den Anspruch einen proaktiven anspruchsvollen Stand der Technik zu beschreiben. Sie ist die zentrale Immissionsschutz-Vorschrift für genehmigungsbedürftige Anlagen und enthält u.a. Vorsorgeanforderungen gegen schädliche Umwelteinwirkungen durch Luftverunreinigungen und ist im Genehmigungsverfahren bei Neuanlagen und bei wesentlichen Änderungen sowie bei der Sanierung bestehender Anlagen anzuwenden. Seit März 2014 arbeiten des Bundesumweltministerium und das Umweltbundesamt gemeinsam an der Neufassung der TA Luft. Die Arbeiten sind mittlerweile weit fortgeschritten. Am 9. September wurde der Referentenentwurf der TA Luft veröffentlicht. Anfang Dezember fanden die offiziellen Anhörungen nach § 51 des Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetzes (BImSchG) [2] statt.
