Abstract:
The dream and politics presents a selection of public speeches by the greatest Democratic leaders, from Franklin Delano Roosevelt up to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Presidents, Presidential candidates, outstanding figures of American history that through the words declaimed in public, and hence in the heat of the fray and the debate, have succeeded in grasping and proposing new aspirations and visions of the nation and the world. The introductory essays by the editors analyse the themes and the style of political communication of the protagonists of the long dream of American liberals. Each speech is completed with notes and a short introduction that helps to place it in its historic context.

Abstract:
There is currently a paucity of literature relating to Agamben’s philosophical treatment of Spinoza (Julie Klein, Dimitris Vardoulakis and Miguel Vatter being notable exceptions).1 There has certainly been no attempt to show how Agamben’s manifold references to the seventeenth-century Dutch-Jewish philosopher form a constellation in his thought. In this chapter, I will attempt to bring those references together under the categorial headings of (1) ‘Living in the Middle Voice’ and (2) ‘The Contemplative Life as Inoperativity’. I choose these categories because Agamben’s key concern (as I read him) involves radically rethinking the figures of ‘life’ and ‘living’ as well as providing a new apologia for contemplation. First, however, a few methodological remarks.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 contrasts the role of the confessional prayers in Daniel 9 and Baruch 1:15–3:8 in relation to the Jeremiah tradition and textual production. Daniel receives revelatory visions in response to his prayer, but the confession plays no role in ending the exile. The narrative line of Baruch makes him the “first” to institutionalize confession as a practice, five years into the exile. The chapter argues that the ongoing practice of confession and the integration of scripturalized confessions in evolving textual traditions were decisive factors in how the text of what might be called “Jeremiah-Baruch” claimed authority for itself as scripture.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 presents a preliminary chronological overview of the major figures discussed in the work. The major topics of subsequent chapters are arranged thematically, ranging from Jewish philosophy’s earliest awakening in the Hellenistic era with the Greek writings of Philo of Alexandria and its flourishing in the medieval period, to its culmination in the seventeenth century with the radical thought of Baruch Spinoza. The role of Neoplatonism is examined as well as the influences of the Neoplatonists, John Philoponus, Aristotle, the Kalâm theologians, and the Islamic philosophers. The chapter emphasizes the interaction between Jewish thinkers and their intellectual peers.

Abstract:
We can draw conclusions about the social context of transmission of secret knowledge. Secret Essene teachings were mentioned in the literary texts of the time. There was evidence of a tripartite division of esoteric groups. Qumran, Manichaeism (though this group does not have secret knowledge), Ascension of Isaiah, 4 Ezra, and 2 Baruch all hinted at these secrets. We look at the mysteries, knowledge, and secrets—the word raz. Secret knowledge was contained within some rabbinic circles, along with forbidden knowledge and the fallen angels. We examine these framework stories in the apocalypses, the transmission of knowledge, and their possible relation with reality.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the conceptual diversity of expressions of resurrection in a variety of early Jewish writings (Daniel, 1 Enoch, 2 Maccabees, 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, Messianic Apocalypse, Pseudo-Ezekiel). Two categories, in particular, appear to have offered broad fluctuation. First, differing modes of embodiment may be identified within the evidence, including beliefs about the fate of the deceased body, as well as varied assumptions about what the newly embodied eschatological life would be like. Second, representations of resurrection also differ in how they locate human destiny within the larger spatial parameters of the cosmos. This diversity has sometimes been interpreted as a deficiency within early Jewish theologies, yet the present chapter explains this as the result of the adaptability of resurrection to a variety of intellectual contexts, a factor that accelerated the reception of resurrection as a widespread eschatological belief, even among competing groups.

Abstract:
This book reveals the landscape of scripture in an era prior to the crystallization of the Tanakh, the Jewish Bible, and before the canonization of the Christian Bible. Most accounts of the formation of the Hebrew Bible trace the origins of scripture through source-critical excavation of the archaeological “tell” of the Bible or the text-critical analysis of the scribal hand on manuscripts, but the discoveries in the Dead Sea Scrolls have transformed our understanding of scripture formation. The book focuses not on the putative origins and closure of the Bible but on the reasons scriptures remained open, with pluriform growth in the Hellenistic-Roman period. Drawing on new methods from cognitive neuroscience and the social sciences as well as traditional philological and literary analysis, the book argues that the key to understanding the formation of scripture is the widespread practice of individual and communal prayer in early Judaism. The figure of the teacher as a learned and pious sage capable of interpreting and embodying the tradition is central to understanding this revelatory phenomenon. The volume considers the entwinement of prayer and scriptural formation in five books reflecting the diversity of early Judaism: Ben Sira, Daniel, Jeremiah/Baruch, 2 Corinthians, and the Qumran Hodayot (Thanksgiving Hymns). While not a complete taxonomy of scripture formation, the book illuminates performative dynamics that have been largely ignored as well as the generative role of interpretive tradition in understanding how the Bible came to be.

Elledge, C. D. Resurrection of the Dead in Early Judaism, 200 BCE-CE 200. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199640416.001.0001.

Abstract:
Belief in resurrection of the dead became one of the most adamant conceptual claims of Christianity and rabbinic Judaism. This book provides a focused analysis of the gradual emergence and diverse receptions of the discourse of resurrection within early Jewish literature, from its early emergence within portions of 1 Enoch (c.200 BCE), until its standardization as a non-negotiable eschatological belief in the Mishnah (c.CE 200). Within this historical environment, resurrection emerged as an insurgent and controversial theodicy that challenged more traditional interpretations of death. The study further demonstrates how scribal circles legitimated the controversial eschatological claim by clothing it in the raiment of earlier scriptural language, grounding it in the theology of creation, and insisting that it was essential to the affirmation of divine justice. As resurrection gained a reception in multiple movements within early Judaism, a diverse range of conceptions flourished, including a fascinating variety of assumptions about the embodied character of eschatological life, as well as how resurrection would transpire within larger cosmic-spatial parameters of the world. The hope also maintained a somewhat tensive relationship with belief in the immortality of the soul, another popular approach to the afterlife within early Judaism. Supportive chapters explore the emergence of resurrection within specific literary texts and collections, including 1 Enoch, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Josephus, 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, and select inscriptions. As the nascent church and early rabbinic Judaism developed their own approaches to resurrection, they remained both the heirs and creative reinterpreters of earlier Jewish theologies of resurrection.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on (1) Edwards’s discussion of three basic epistemic modalities (sense perception, rational inference, and rational intuition) and their sanctification; (2) his account of the epistemic status of scripture; and (3) his reasons for thinking that typology is another valid epistemic mode. The chapter includes discussions of Edwards’s doctrine of the spiritual senses, and his views on natural theology and on the relation between reason and revelation. It concludes with an examination of similarities and differences between Edwards’s views on epistemology and those of Karl Barth, and a brief defence of Edwards’s claim that a renewed heart is a necessary precondition of doing good work in theology.
