Abstract:

Studies were conducted in 1988, 1989, and 1992 in Plains, GA to measure effects of paraquat and alachlor on ‘Florunner’ peanut. Peanut treated with paraquat (0.14 kg ai/ha) plus alachlor (3.4 kg ai/ha) applied at vegetative emergence (VE), or paraquat plus alachlor VE followed by paraquat 28 days after emergence (DAE) were compared with a nontreated control. Both herbicide treatments reduced peanut foliage biomass at 65 DAE in 1989 and 1992. Herbicide treatments did not affect foliage biomass 90 DAE in 1988 and 122 DAE in 1989, but paraquat plus alachlor followed by paraquat reduced foliage biomass at 122 DAE in 1992. Pod biomass, measured at 90 and 65 DAE in 1988 and 1992, respectively, was reduced by herbicides. However, pod biomass did not differ among treatments 122 DAE in 1989 and 1992. Percent reflectance from the peanut canopy measured no effects from herbicides in 1988. However, in 1989 and 1992 herbicides applied sequentially reduced peanut canopy development. Peanut treated with a single herbicide and sequentially took longer to mature. Once optimum maturity was reached, peanut yields were not reduced.

AbstractObjective:To determine trends in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in healthcare workers, tuberculosis (TB) control measures, and compliance with the 1990 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guideline for preventing transmission of TB in healthcare facilities.Design:Voluntary questionnaire sent to all members of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, representing 359 hospitals.Results:Respondents’ hospitals (210 [58%]) had a median of 2,400 healthcare workers (range, 396 to 13,745), 437 beds (range, 48 to 1,250), 5.6 patients with TB per year (range, 0 to 492), and 0 multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB patients per year (range, 0 to 33). Of 166 respondents’ hospitals for which data were provided for 1989 through 1992, the number caring for MDR-TB patients increased from 10 (6%) in 1989 to 49 (30%) in 1992. Reported policies for routine healthcare worker tuberculin skin testing varied. The median skin-test positivity rate for healthcare workers at the time of hire increased from 0.54% in 1989 to 0.81% in 1992, but the median conversion rate during routine testing remained similar: 0.35% in 1989 and 0.33% in 1992. Among 196 hospitals with reported data on respiratory protection use for 1989 through 1992, the use of either surgical submicron, dust-mist, or dust-fume-mist respirators for healthcare workers increased from 9 (5%) in 1989 to 85 (43%) in 1992. Of 181 hospitals with reported data, 113 (62%) had acid-fast bacilli isolation facilities consistent with the 1990 CDC guideline (ie, a single patient room, negative air pressure relative to the hallway, air exhausted directly outside, and ≥ 6 air exchanges per hour).Conclusions:While the number of surveyed hospitals caring for TB and MDR-TB patients increased during 1989 through 1992, TB infection control measures at many hospitals still did not meet the 1990 CDC guideline recommendations.

Abstract:

The elections in June 1992 brought to power Vladimir Meciar‘s Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) in Bratislava and Vaclav Klaus‘ Civic Democratic Party (ODS) in Prague. In the concept of HZDS the idea of a parity (which is impossible to achieve between two units of differing size) gradually came to be associated with the concept of “Slovak sovereignty” and Slovakia’s “international legal subjectivity”, both incompatible with Czechoslovakia’s further existence. Such confederative model brought Czechs nothing but troubles. Subsequently, Prague now lost interest in keeping Slovakia within the Czechoslovak state. The result was “the velvet divorce” of Czechoslovakia on 31 December 1992.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT Following the Exxon Valdez oil spill of March 24, 1989, in Prince William Sound, Alaska, Exxon conducted a comprehensive shoreline survey program in cooperation with federal and state authorities. Objectives of surveys during the spring and summer of 1989 were to assess the distribution and magnitude of oiling, to evaluate impacts of the oil on key shoreline biological communities, and to identify ecological and archaeological resources requiring special care during the massive cleanup effort that followed. Similar shoreline surveys were performed during the springs of 1990, 1991, and 1992 on all shorelines in Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska suspected of having residual oil. These subsequent surveys were conducted to provide information on the distribution and amounts of residual shoreline oil and to assess the condition of intertidal biological communities in order to make environmentally sound decisions regarding the need for additional cleanup. The following report is based primarily on survey results from Prince William Sound, where most of the heavy shoreline oiling occurred. Although not strictly quantitative, the shoreline surveys provide an unprecedented, broad base of professional observations covering the entire spill-affected area from 1989 through 1992 by which to evaluate spill impacts and recovery. Shoreline surveys documented that the extent of shoreline oiling declined substantially from 1989 to 1992. In 1989, oil was found on about 16 percent of the 3,000 miles of shoreline in Prince William Sound; by the spring of 1991, oil was found on only about 2 percent of the shoreline; and by May of 1992, on only 0.2 percent. In all years, most of this oil was located in the biologically least productive upper intertidal and supratidal zones. In both 1991 and 1992, small, isolated pockets of subsurface oil were found on some boulder/cobble beaches. Most of these deposits were also located in the upper intertidal and were usually buried beneath clean sediments. In almost all cases, the condition of intertidal biological communities improved correspondingly from 1989 to 1992. By the spring of 1991, recovery appeared to be well under way on virtually all previously oiled shores, with species composition, abundance, and diversity levels usually comparable to those of nearby shores that were not oiled in 1989. Recruitment of intertidal plants and animals was observed as early as the summer of 1989, and increasingly through 1991 and 1992. Recruitment was evident even in areas with remnant deposits of surface and subsurface oil, indicating that toxicity levels of the oil had declined substantially and that, in most cases, the residual oil no longer interfered with biological recovery. Observations of birds and marine mammals on or near shorelines surveyed during 1991 and 1992 confirmed that species present before the spill were still present and were feeding and reproducing in areas affected by oil in 1989. In most cases, observed densities were comparable to those recorded prior to the spill, and to those found in similar unaffected areas.

Objective.To examine the incidence of gout over the last 20 years and to evaluate possible changes in associated comorbid conditions.Methods.The medical records were reviewed of all adults with a diagnosis of incident gout in Olmsted County, Minnesota, USA, during 2 time periods (January 1, 1989–December 31, 1992, and January 1, 2009–December 31, 2010). Incident cases had to fulfill at least 1 of 3 criteria: the American Rheumatism Association 1977 preliminary criteria for gout, the Rome criteria, or the New York criteria.Results.A total of 158 patients with new-onset gout were identified during 1989–1992 and 271 patients during 2009–2010, yielding age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates of 66.6/100,000 (95% CI 55.9–77.4) in 1989–1992 and 136.7/100,000 (95% CI 120.4–153.1) in 2009–2010. The incidence rate ratio was 2.62 (95% CI 1.80–3.83). At the time of their first gout flare, patients diagnosed with gout in 2009–2010 had higher prevalence of comorbid conditions compared with 1989–1992, including hypertension (69% vs 54%), diabetes mellitus (25% vs 6%), renal disease (28% vs 11%), hyperlipidemia (61% vs 21%), and morbid obesity (body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2; 29% vs 10%).Conclusion.The incidence of gout has more than doubled over the recent 20 years. This increase together with the more frequent occurrence of comorbid conditions and cardiovascular risk factors represents a significant public health challenge.

Abstract Polycross-pollinated white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) families were evaluated in field and retrospective nursery tests in 1989, 1991, and 1992, respectively. Height growth was measured at age 10 for the field tests and at ages 1 to 6 for the retrospective nursery tests. Except for a few cases, the family mean correlations between nursery and field heights were significant for the 1989 and 1992 series, and their corresponding genetic correlations ranged from low to medium (from 0.37 to 0.74). Because of heavy noncrop competition, height growth in the 1991 nursery series showed consistently lower heritabilities and correlations with field performance compared with those of the other two series. Early nursery selection by theoretical prediction was generally efficient for the 1989 and 1992 series. Rank classification analysis indicated that application of early nursery selection should be used with caution for identifying elite families but could be used to cull inferior families or clones, apply multiple-stage selection, or perform positive assortative mating.

Abstract:

A massive campaign on "Love Teeth Day" (LTD) has been celebrated nationwide each year in China since 1989. As announced in an official document, nine government and non-government organizations have jointly issued a circular designating that the 20th of September of each year be kept for the Love Teeth Festival in this country. The main activities were planned and conducted by the National Committee for Oral Health, which was set up in 1988. It aims to motivate the people's awareness of dental self-care, participation, and to promote community involvement in oral health education programs. For feedback, two types of questionnaires were designed and sent to the public and the organizers, respectively, after each campaign, and then returned to the office for data processing. The findings from a four-year study indicated that: (1) The activities started from three municipalities, 29 capitals of provinces, and some large cities (1989), and spread to most cities in the urban area, and about 300 counties in the rural area (1992); (2) 14,000 dental professionals and health workers participated in 1989 as information providers, and increased to 40,000 in 1992; (3) oral health knowledge has increased to 76.2% (1992) from 37% (1989); and (4) the people's will in dental prevention was strengthened.

Abstract:

Die bisherigen Analysen haben den in den 1990er Jahren in Ungarn durchgeführten Entschädigungsprozess unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Bestrebungen der politischen Parteien und der Veränderung ihrer diesbezüglichen Standpunkte untersucht sowie ihn in Kontext zu den verabschiedeten Rechtsnormen gebracht. Wenig Aufmerksamkeit erhielten demgegenüber die die Entschädigung betreffenden Meinungen der einzelnen betroffenen Gruppen, ihre konkreten Bestrebungen und die Möglichkeit der Gruppen, ihre Interessen durchzusetzen. In den bisherigen Forschungen wurden zudem die gesellschaftlichen Kosten der Rechtsverletzungen und ihre Auswirkung auf die betroffenen Gruppen bzw. auf das Leben der einzelnen Personen kaum thematisiert. Die den Anträgen auf Entschädigung beigefügten Dokumente (Lebensgeschichten, Fotografien, Briefwechsel, Akten) beleuchten währenddessen zahllose Erlebnisgeschichten, die auch – über die individuellen Überlebensstrategien und Kämpfe hinausgehend – die existenziellen, psychischen und physischen Auswirkungen der Rechtsverletzungen, die für Generationen Folgen hatten, offenlegen. Die Studie arbeitet den Standpunkt der ungarndeutschen Gemeinschaft bezüglich der individuellen Entscheidung, die diesbezüglichen Aktivitäten des Landesverbands der Ungarndeutschen sowie die Bemühungen auf, die Rechtsverletzungen in die Erinnerungskultur der Gemeinschaft einfließen zu lassen.

In this study, three dates of fall seeding (late August, early September, and late September) at two rates of seeding (258 and 328 seeds m−2) were investigated in 1988–1989, 1989–1990, and 1991–1992, at Lacombe, AB, using Musketeer fall rye (Secale cereale L.), Norstar and Norwin winter wheats (Triticum aestivum L. EM Thell), and Decade and Wintri winter triticales (× Triticosecale Rimpani Wit.). Survival was found to be best in all years when planting was conducted in late August and early September (78–99% survival). In both 1989 and 1990 the early planting resulted in the lowest yields (3.09 and 3.91 t ha−1), while in 1992 the latest planting resulted in the lowest yields (0.92 t ha−1). The early seeding resulted in earlier maturity in 1989 and 1992 (1–13 d). Test weight and kernel weight decreased with later planting (10–116 kg m−3 and 1–3.4 mg, respectively). Kernel protein was generally not affected by the treatments but was higher in some later planted material (0.2–1.0 g 100 g−1). Seeding rates were without effect on most traits, except grain yield in 1992 and kernel weight in 1990 and 1992 when rate effects varied among seeding dates. Date of seeding did not affect plant height except in 1992 when the later planted material was shorter. For all cultivars, survival was decreased with the late planting thereby increasing the risk of crop production. The window for seeding winter cereals in central Alberta is wider for the hardier cultivars and if forced to seed late, these cultivars should be selected. Objective.To examine whether a change in the presentation of incident gout happened over the last 20 years and to determine the risk of subsequent gout flares after an initial gout attack.Methods.All incident cases of gout were identified among residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, diagnosed in 1989–1992 and 2009–2010 according to the earliest date fulfilling the 1977 American Rheumatism Association preliminary criteria, or the New York or Rome criteria for gout. Patients in both cohorts were then followed for up to 5 years. Cumulative incidence and person-year methods were used to compare flare rates, and conditional frailty models were used to examine predictors.Results.A total of 429 patients with incident gout (158 patients in 1989–1992 and 271 patients in 2009–2010) were identified and followed for a mean of 4.2 years. The majority of patients were male (73%) and the mean age (SD) at gout onset was 59.7 (17.3) years. Classic podagra decreased significantly from 74% to 59% (p < 0.001). Cumulative incidence of first flare was similar in both cohorts (62% vs 60% by 5 yrs in 1989–1992 and 2009–2010, respectively; p = 0.70), but overall flare rate was marginally higher in 2009–2010 compared to 1989–1992 (rate ratio: 1.24). Hyperuricemia (HR 1.59) and kidney disease (HR 1.34) were significant predictors of future flares.Conclusion.Gout flares were common in both time periods. Hyperuricemia and kidney disease were predictors of future flares in patients with gout. Podagra as a presentation of gout has become relatively less frequent in recent years.

Gould's petrel, Pterodroma leucoptera leucoptera, breeds only on Cabbage Tree Island, New South Wales. Annual surveys to estimate the size of the breeding population and the reproductive output were conducted between 1989 and 1992. Annual estimates of the total number of pairs breeding in the two gullies containing the main population were between 122 +/- 20 (s.e.) and 202 +/- 26. Breeding success was less than 20% between 1989 and 1991, but rose to 24.7% in 1992. This marginal improvement may be the result of management action undertaken to reduce mortality of breeding adults and fledglings. The total population is estimated to have declined from 2004 (95% confidence limits: 1464,3185) in 1970 to 1479 (1250,1815) in 1992, a decline of 26% in 22 years. The reasons for this decline are unclear.

The first volume, published in 1988, appeared in quarterly issues, but moved to bi-monthly production in 1989, and then monthly release from 1990 through 1992. Two volumes appeared each year during 1989–1992, accounting for the fact that this twenty-first year coincides with volume 25. In 1993, it returned to bi-monthly publication, remaining so for the past 15 years. During this period, other vision-related journals have made their debut, but Visual Neuroscience remains a premier venue for publishing fundamental research in the neurobiology of vision.

RIASSUNTOScopo - Scopo dello studio è quello di descrivere nel tempo l'attività delle strutture ambulatoriali psichiatriche del Lazio. Disegno - Studio descrittivo. Setting - Sono stati analizzati 21 Dipartimenti di Salute Mentale del Lazio nel periodo 1989-92. La fonte dei dati è rappresentata da una scheda riassuntiva mensile dell'attivita dell'ambulatorio. Principali misure utilizzate - Distribuzione di frequenze e tassi di prevalenza ed incidenza. Risultati - La prevalenza e l'incidenza dell'utenza in trattamento aumentano nel periodo considerate Il tasso di prevalenza annuale (per 100.000 residenti) era pari a 900 nel 1989 e 1020 nel 1992, con un incremento del 13% . Il tasso di incidenza annuale è aumentato da 517 nel 1989 a 564 nel 1992, quello di prevalenza di punto da 410 nel 1989 a 540 nel 1992. Il tipo di risposta più frequente data dal servizio è quella di accoglimento e colloquio che rappresenta negli ultimi tre anni circa il 55% del totale delle risposte. Sul totale degli utenti in carico nell'anno, circa il 25% concludono il trattamento; di questi circa il 75% interrompe il trattamento per abbandono. Nel 1992, il 28% dei soggetti conclude il trattamento con diagnosi di psicosi, il 69 % con quella di nevrosi ed il 3% con diagnosi di ritardo mentale (oligofrenia); rimane ancora elevata la quota di trattamenti conclusi con diagnosi sconosciuta. Conclusioni - L'aumento osservato dei tassi di incidenza e prevalenza puo essere determinato da numerosi fattori come l'aumento della domanda espressa, la maggiore efficienza dei servizi, e la migliore sensibilita di notifica del Sistema Informativo. Il fenomeno dei trattamenti interrotti necessita di essere ulteriormente approfondito valutando l'interazione esistente tra modalita terapeutiche e caratteristiche individuali dell'utenza.

Abstract. Recent registry studies comparing mortality between peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients show conflicting results. The purpose of this study is to determine whether previously published results showing higher mortality for patients treated with PD versus HD in the United States continue to hold true over the period 1987-1993. National mortality rates for PD and HD were extracted from the U.S. Renal Data System (USRDS) annual reports for the cohort periods: 1987-1989, 1988-1990, 1989-1991, 1990-1992, and 1991-1993. Using Poisson regression, death rates per 100 patient years were compared between PD and HD for each cohort period controlling for age, gender, race, and cause of end-stage renal disease (diabetes versus nondiabetes). When incident patients and patients with a prior transplant were included in the analysis, starting with the 1989-1991 cohort, we found little or no difference in the relative risk (RR PD:HD) of death between PD and HD (1987-1989: RR = 1.17, P < 0.001; 1988-1990: RR = 1.12, P < 0.001; 1989-1991: RR = 1.06, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.06, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.08, P = 0.043). After a test for goodness-of-fit, separate analyses for diabetic patients and nondiabetic patients were done to examine unexplained variation in death rates. For nondiabetic patients, there was less than a 1% difference in the adjusted 1-yr survival between PD and HD from 1989-1993 (1989-1991: RR = 1.05, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.04, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.07, P < 0.01). Among diabetic patients, the PD:HD death rate ratio varied significantly according to gender and age. For the average male diabetic patient, there was little or no difference in risk between PD and HD from 1989-1993 (1989-1991: RR = 1.02, P = NS; 1990-1992: RR = 1.05, P = NS; 1991-1993: RR = 1.08, P < 0.01). For diabetic patients under the age of 50, those treated with PD had a significantly lower risk of death than those treated with HD (1989-1993: 0.84 ≤ RR ≤ 0.89, P < 0.005). Over the same period, female diabetic patients treated with PD had a higher risk, on average, than HD (1.18 ≤ RR ≤ 1.19, P < 0.001) as did diabetic patients over the age 50 (1.28 ≤ RR ≤ 1.30, P < 0.001). Unlike previously published results that were restricted to prevalent-only patients, this national study of both prevalent and incident patients found little or no difference in overall mortality between PD and HD. The recent trends in mortality likely reflect the inclusion of incident patients, but they may also reflect changes in case-mix differences and/or improved PD practice. Additional incident-based studies that allow for additional case-mix adjustments are needed to better compare outcomes between HD and PD.
