Abstract:
Regular brood surveys on a population of maned ducks, Chenonetta jubata, in south-eastern Australia provided information on the timing of breeding, brood sizes, duckling survival and production for this species. Over three years (1981-83), most breeding was during the spring, ducklings hatching between late August and late November. Some autumn (March-May) breeding also occurred. Timing of breeding appeared to be more closely related to the abundance of food than to rainfall alone. There were clear differences in reproductive success between the drought year of 1982 and the two years of similar weather, 1981 and 1983. Breeding began later in 1982, with a mean hatch date of 18 5.1 November, compared with 7 3.6 October in 1981 and 21 5.1 September in 1983. Broods hatched over 43 days in 1982 compared with 69 days in 1981 and 101 days in 1983. Also, duckling survival was lowest in 1982, with about a 20% probability of survival to fledging compared with 89% in 1981 and 82% in 1983. Only six broods were found in 1982 compared with 33 in 1981 and 30 in 1983. An estimated 158 and 176 ducklings survived to fledging compared with seven in 1982. Brood sizes at hatching did not show the same clear annual differences. In 1981 and 1983 there were seasonal differences in brood size at hatching. Broods were smaller late in the season (4.1) compared with early (7.2) and mid-season (7.2). Broods were also larger in 1983 (7.2) than in 1981 (5.4). Brood size at hatching in 1982 was 6.0.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTIONThe small species of Pogonophora that are widely distributed in sediments along the Continental Slope and in the Norwegian fjords (Webb, 1965; Southward & Southward, 1967; Southward, 1971,1979) carry Gram-negative bacteria in the posterior part of the body (Southward, 1982). In this they resemble the giant pogonophores (Vestimentifera) that live around hydrothermal vents in the Pacific ocean floor (Cavanaugh et al. 1981; Cavanaugh, 1983). The bacteria in both groups are autotrophic (Felbeck, 1981; Southward et al. 1981), capable of synthesizing organic matter from carbon dioxide. The bacteria in Riftia and other vent pogonophores appear to obtain energy by oxidation of reduced sulphur compounds (Felbeck, 1981; Felbeck, Childress & Somero, 1981). Hydrothermal vent waters may contain as much as 6 nut dissolved sulphide (Edmond et al. 1982; Edmond & Von Damm, 1983), which is diluted to about 200-300 μM near the giant pogonophores, whose blood can transport sulphide without affecting the affinity of its haemoglobin for oxygen (Arp & Childress, 1983; Powell & Somero, 1983; Childress, Arp & Fisher, 1984).

Abstract:
The floral response of 6-year-old seedling white spruce (Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss.) was evaluated after treatment in 1981 with the gibberellin mixture of A4 and A7 (GA4/7), napthaleneacetic acid (NAA), and root-pruning. To evaluate the effectiveness of biennial treatment, trees treated in 1981 were again treated in 1983 and compared with a second group of trees treated only in 1983. Trees treated in 1981 with 500 mg•L−1 GA4/7 plus 25 mg•L−1 NAA and root-pruning averaged 42 female strobili per tree and control trees remained vegetative. Root-pruning significantly reduced terminal shoot growth and shoot water potential. No male strobili were produced on study trees. Trees treated in 1981 and again in 1983 were as productive (based on female counts) as trees treated only in 1983. Two treatments in 1983 significantly enhanced female strobilus production over the control: (i) 500 mg•L−1 GA4/7 alone and (ii) 250 mg•L−1 GA4/7 plus root-pruning. These treatments averaged 150 and 192 female strobili per tree, respectively; control trees averaged 30. Biennial treatment with GA4/7 and root-pruning can effectively continue to increase female cone production of white spruce.

Abstract:
S. Lewis pour the lion, the witch and the wardrobe.
Socialization, the process by which people learn the norms and values of the society in which they are to live, begins well before they can read. Yet books have an important part to play in the process, because they enable children to consider situations of a more varied kind than those they have actually experienced. What is the influence of books on eight to twelve year old children in britain in the early 80's, what vision of society do the most popular books convey, with special regard to the fundamental issues linked to race, sex, and social class, such are the questions to be considered. The first half of the thesis is based on the results of a survey which was carried on a representative sample of the population in the 70's. They show that the relationship of children with books varies enormously between individuals, but also stresses the role of such factors as sex and social class. They emphasize the unique popularity of enid blyton. Her school-stories, a limited yet significant sample of the writings of this highly controversial author are subsequently analyzed. They show her to be extremely conservative in her views on education and society, which convey the idea that conformity per se is highly desirable. The second half relies on the case studies of 120 children, who were given a written questionnaire followed by individual, non-directive interviews. The results largely corroborate those of the national survey. They point to two other popular authors: roald dahl and c. S. Lewis. The former's charlie and the chocolate factory and the latter's the lion, the witch and the wardrobe reveal that their authors, like blyton, are often content with worn out stereotypes when dealing with the notions of race, sex and social class. The simplistic vision of society they offer, both on the moral and social levels, is based on over-simplifications and categorizations. The books british children read in the early eighties thus largely ignore the evolution of british society, even the changes that had already taken place by the time they were published, and seem unlikely to play a positive part and contribute to further progress

Abstract:
Graduation success of college athletes is becoming as popular a phrase in the world of college sports as is the term Proposition 48. This phrase has derived from the inability of college athletes to obtain a degree after their playing eligibilities have ended. This study focused on several variables that help determine or judge the graduating success of a student athlete. The particular variables used were SAT scores, high school GPA, college GPA, and race.

A positive relation of 93% of all students, 77% relationship for black student athletes, and 100% for non-blacks was found between SAT, high school GPA, and college GPA graduating success. It should be noted that other variables may affect the success or lack of success of a student athlete; however, these lie beyond the scope of this study.

Abstract:
Teatro Abierto first appeared in 1981 in Buenos Aires during the "Process of national reorganization" (1976-1983), one of the most tragic dictatorship Argentina ever endured. It was a theatrical phenomenon meant to reaffirm the existence of Argentine theatre though being the victim of censorship. However, as the performances went on, and thanks to public support, it eventually became a political movement opposed to the regime. The success of this venture would incite the artist to repeat the experience. More than ninety plays, performed during four seasons, were indeed proposed to the porteños spectators. What means did the plays use to denounce some of the reality of the time ? The analysis of the movement and of the plays performed between 1981 an 1983 shows that while Teatro Abierto was first and foremost considered as a political phenomenon, not only by the critics but also by the artists themselves, it was also at the root of important actworks in the argentine theatrical scene

Abstract:
This study examines aspects of Grenada's National In-Service Teacher Education Programme (NISTEP), 1980-1983. NISTEP is analysed in the historical context of the social and educational changes which occurred in Grenada during this period. The writer first describes the strategies and innovations used by the People's Revolutionary Government to establish the programme as a comprehensive, national teacher training approach for all unqualified Primary school teachers. This replaced the inadequate system that had left Grenada with the problem of having a large proportion of its teachers untrained for their profession.NISTEP is then described from the perspective of its aims, its component sub-systems, and how it operated.

Abstract:
Specialite scientifique : sociologie des communications. 1.
Who is writing to protestant religious broadcasters in france? why? what is the secret of broadcasts which receive an important number of letters ? these are the three questions which were at the origin of this study. Five protestant broadcasts have been chosen and 4000 letters received between october 1981 and december 1982 have been analysed. Apart from the construction of a typical profile of the correspondent, the expression of their motivations and the evaluation of the communication, this study has revealed four factors which play an essential role for the quantity of letters. It allowed to mesure the competition between the official protestants and independant evangelical protestants. Latters ones manifested a very high vitality. The study ends with a reflection about the future of protestantism on radio and television. A reflection which can be expressed in these words: "which kind of protestantism will be on the wires tomorrow?

Abstract:
In New Zealand there is a marked scarcity of material on the workings of the indigenous news media. This thesis is intended to partially fill the large gap in New Zealand scholarship in this area. It provides a case study of the production of meaning by mainstream New Zealand news media organisations. Its purpose is to explicate the dominant messages in circulation from 1981 through 1983 regarding unemployment. The neutral face of the news discourse is shown to conceal the routinized signification practices of journalistic professionalism. These practices act to separate the normative from the deviant. They also serve the interests of society's established and legitimated institutions. This process was aided by the simplistic, as opposed to simplified, nature of news media presentations.

Abstract:
Ten szczególny czas uaktywnienia kobiet widzimy na różnych płaszczyznach: zorganizowanie holistycznej pomocy rodzinom internowanych; działalności informacyjnej; kolportaż prasy drugiego obiegu; swoistego budowania wspólnoty; prowadzenia akcji kulturalno-oświatowej; zachowanie niezłomnej postawy podczas przesłuchań (milczenie); towarzyszenie rodzinom podczas odwiedzin w ośrodkach odosobnienia (swoisty rodzaj eskortowania), gdy pokonano wszystkie trudności prawno-administracyjne, by tam dotrzeć; nieustający przemyt zakazanych artykułów, takich jak radio, aparat fotograficzny, kamera, magnetofon; wynoszenie „po widzeniach” tekstów politycznych, trawestowanych tekstów znanych pieśni tj. Rota czy Boże coś Polskę, wszelkiej grafiki, rysunków, tekstów piosenek.

Abstract:
The thermal stress and pressure stress caused by mixing of cold and hot water on a tee junction of piping system in reactor cooling systems of nuclear power plants are the potential place to crack pipe. These stresses are generated due to temperature distribution unevenly in regions where hot and cold flows are intensively mixed together. As operating plants become older and life time extension activities are initiated, operators need screening criteria to exclude risks of pipe cracking. The Kuosheng boiling water reactor (BWR) units 1 and 2, owned by Taiwan Power Company (TPC), started commercial operations in 1981 and 1983, respectively. The purpose of this paper is to assess the Von Mises stresses and deformation of tee piping in Kuosheng’s RHR system by the Fluid Solid Interaction (FSI) simulation. Furthermore, the simulation result compare with the experiment result during the fourth refueling outage per decade in 2014. The temperature and the stress of monitor points established by experiment are all located in the range between maximum and minimum of the experiment result.

Abstract:
The conditions for the appearance of cavitation, i.e. the local vaporization of fluid under static or dynamic stresses, are closely connected with the tensile strength of the fluid (Arndt, Keller (1992)). Although the dominant effect of water quality on the cavitation interception has been known for many years (Keller (1981, 1983, 1984)), it is uncommon to measure its stress resistance. A possible reason for that could be the unique stress-resistance probe of Keller (1987, 1994) (Eickmann (1992)), which by itself represents a great engineering break-through, is rather complex and expensive. It has become clear during the ASME/JASME conference in San Francisco, 1999 (Keller, Rott, Striedinger, Awad, Ludwig, Yang, Li), and the Fourth International Symposium on Cavitation in Pasadena 2001 (Keller), that internationally standardized testing conditions are required with respect to water quality (Heller (2000)). A relatively simple method of concurrently measuring tensile strength or cavitation susceptibility in cavitation channels has been developed at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of the Technische Universita¨t Dresden during the last months. This newly developed tensile strength measuring technique is not only efficient and cheap but can also be installed in any existing cavitation channel with comparably small effort. The presented paper represents the actual developmentstate of the Dresden measuring device. Comparison measurements at the cavitatio n-channels of the Versuchsanstalt Obernach (Dr. Keller), Schiffsbau-Versuchsanstalt Potsdam (Mr. Heinke) and the Schiffsbau-Versuchsanstalt Hamburg (Mr. Friesch) are planed for the following months.

Abstract:
Thrombin-generated cleavage sites of human fibrinogen have been identified within the connective tissue stroma adjacent to viable tumor cells in fresh frozen sections of small cell carcinomaof the lung (SCCL) by means of immunohistochemical techniques using mouse monoclonal antibodies (designated alpha and beta) to the N-terminal peptides of the fibrinogen alpha and beta chains(provided by G. Matsueda and E. Haber).Specific connective tissue staining with antibody alpha was diffuse while staining with antibody beta was linear and focal. These results indicate thatthrombin is generated in situ in this tumor type. Previous demonstration of an initiator of coagulation together with coagulation factor intermediates associated with viable SCCL tumor cellsin situ(Cancer Res. 43:3963, 1983; Blood 66 (Suppl.1):329, 1985) is consistent with the hypothesis that the tumorcells themselves are responsible for the local thrombin generation. Because favorable effects of anticoagulant therapy with warfarin in SCCL have been demonstrated previouslyin two randomized clinical trials (J.A.M.A. 145:831, 1981; Proc. Am.Soc. Clin. Oncol. 4:191,1985), we postulate that local tumor cell-induced thrombin formation may contributeto self-regulated progression of SCCL through formation of a supportive, fibrin-rich connective tissue stroma (N. Engl. J. Med. 315:1650, 1986) and/or stimulation of cell proliferation (e.g. E.M.B.0. J. 4: 2927,1985; Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 83:976, 1986). These results suggest novel treatment strategies for this particular tumor type and justify efforts to identify other tumortypes in which similarmechanisms exist.

Abstract:
Westinghouse realistic Large Break LOCA methodology (Frepoli, 2008) is based on the use of the WCOBRA/TRAC code (Young, et. al., 1998). The original COBRA/TRAC code (Thurgood, et. al., 1983) was developed at Pacific Northwest Laboratory by combining the COBRA-TF code (Thurgood, et. al., 1980) and the TRAC-PD2 code (Liles, et al., 1981). Later the code was significantly upgraded at Westinghouse and validated for Large Break LOCA (LBLOCA) phenomena and renamed WCOBRA/TRAC. The current WCOBRA/TRAC has been shown to adequately model LBLOCA phenomena which are mainly dominated by the thermal-hydraulic phenomena in the vessel component. Westinghouse is now looking at extending the code applicability to smaller break sizes such that the same code can be applied to a full spectrum of LOCAs, from small to intermediate break as well as large break LOCAs. Several upgrades have been made to the code which has been renamed WCOBRA/TRAC-TF2. In this new code, the TRAC-PD2 module was replaced by the 1D module of TRAC-PF1/MOD2 code (Los Alamos, 1993, Spore, et. al., 2000). TRAC-PF1 is based on a two-fluid (6-equation) formulation as opposed to the 5-equation drift-flux model of TRAC-PD2. The new formulation allows a more realistic simulation of the two-phase flow features in the PWR loops during a SBLOCA scenario. This paper also describes some of the improvements added to the code and the assessment needed to extend its applicability to the full spectrum of LOCA scenarios or break sizes.

Abstract:
Fibrin polymerization has been found to be influenced by shear flow conditions (Puryear,1980). In order to determine which mechanisms are responsible for theeffect reported it is necessary to look at the various stages in fibrin polymerization. It is known that the enzymatic attack of thrombin on fibrinogen is not influenced by shear (Sellers,1981). The next step, which is investigated in this study, is the oligomer-early protofibril stage.Fibrinogen (human, Kabi) is reacted with thrombin (human, Sigma) under Couette flow conditions (volume-averaged shear 0-250sec-l) in a pH 6.8, 4mM CaC12, HEPES buffered solution (I. S.-.15). The reaction time is chosen so that 6% of fibrinopeptide A (FPA) is released. The reaction is stopped by a 1,6 hexandiol-hirudin solution. The effect of shear on oligomer population is measured using large angle 1ightscattering techniques. In order to predict theoretical shear effects on oligomer formation, it is important to be able to predict the population size. This is done using Jamney’s (1983) predictions, for early reaction time, assuming q=16. Given a size distribution it is possible to apply low Reynold’s number hydrodynamic and Smoluchowski1 s( coagulation theories to predict possible shear affects.Hydrodynamic theory predicts no effect of shear on oligomer formation; Peclet numbers are too small. Smoluchowski coagulation theory, on the other hand, predicts that for oligomer sized particles in the shear range studied, orthokinetic (shear induced) coagulation becomes more important than peri kinetic (Brornian) coagulation. Results obtained from Zimm analysis show a dramatic increase in molecular weight, compared to the stagnant case, in the shear region corresponding to where orthokinetic coagulation dominates. The higher the thrombin concentration, the more extreme and earlier (i.e. lower shear) these effects are felt. After a peak is reached in molecular weight there is a sudden drop. This is caused by monomer exhaustion which shifts the population to a more homogeneous type. The concept of orthokinetic coagulation is important physiologically since it is advantageous to incorporate monomers onto fibers as quickly as possible.

Abstract:
"Blockade" of the RES is the maj0or therapeutic principle in autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (AITP) and related conditions. It can be accomplished by a number of possibilities which include, first, removal of the main sequestration site of antibody-sensitized platelets (i.e. splenectomy), or, second, functional "modulation" of the phagocytic capacity of the RES. The latter is achieved by either "unspecific" or "specific" means. "Unspecific" means are defined as being operative via a mechanism in which apparantly no immunological reactants are involved, while "specific" means comprise the direct or indirect participation of antibodies and/or immune complexes. "Unspecific" means are the injection of red blood cell (RBC) stroma (SHULMAN et al, 1965) or heat-treated RBC (PREIS et al, 1980). "Specific" means seem to be effective during the course of some patients with acute viral infections as mirrored in spontaneous remissions of thrombocytopenia, and by treatment with high doses of human IgG (HDIgG) (IMBACH et al, 1981) or with anti-D (SALAMA et al, 1983). Until now more than 30 studies on the efficacy of HDIgG have appeared describing now over 600 patients. Most IgG preparations for intravenous use on the market have been used. Although they differ in their content of di- and polymers and the integrity of their Fc portion they all seem to be effective. Pepsin-treated IgG, however, is not. A response rate to HDIgG of approximately 60-70% of AITP patients is usually seen with the platelet peak between day 5-10 post infusions; the effect is always transitory. The mechanism(s) of HDIgG is (are) still obscure. Since pepsin-treated IgG is ineffective the Fc portion of IgG seems indispensable. Interference with Fc-IgG receptors of the RES by HDIgG via Fc receptor blocking antibodies or via immune complexes is at present the most likely explanation. Coating of autologous RBC by anti-D antibodies is an alternative way for RES "blockade". It is similarly effective in AITP as HDIgG, but, unlike HDIgG, much more in unsplenectomized than in splenectomized patients. Its mechanism is dependent on antibody-coating of RBC, since Rh (D)-negative recipients are unresponsive to anti-D, but responsive to anti-c. Comparative studies of RES clearance of racdio-actively labelled aggregated albumin have shown that the clearance of liver uptake is significantly increased by HDIgG, but not by anti-D, although their influence on the platelet count is similar. This speaks in favor of a more general effect of HDIgG on the RES, whereas anti-D is Fc-receptor dependent. The clinical efficacy and conceivable mechanisms of these recent treatment modalities will be discussed.

Gurbuz, Mustafa. "PERFORMING MORAL OPPOSITION: MUSINGS ON THE STRATEGY AND IDENTITY IN THE GÜLEN MOVEMENT." In Muslim World in Transition: Contributions of the Gülen Movement. Leeds Metropolitan University Press, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.55207/hzit2119.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper investigates the Gülen movement’s repertoires of action in order to determine how it differs from traditional Islamic revivalist movements and from the so-called ‘New Social Movements’ in the Western world. Two propositions lead the discussion: First, unlike many Islamic revivalist movements, the Gülen movement shaped its identity against the perceived threat of a trio of enemies, as Nursi named them a century ago – ignorance, disunity, and poverty. This perception of the opposition is crucial to understanding the apolitical mind-set of the Gülen movement’s fol- lowers. Second, unlike the confrontational New Social Movements, the Gülen movement has engaged in ‘moral opposition’, in which the movement’s actors seek to empathise with the adversary by creating (what Bakhtin calls) ‘dialogic’ relationships. ‘Moral opposition’ has enabled the movement to be more alert strategically as well as more productive tactically in solving the everyday practical problems of Muslims in Turkey. A striking example of this ‘moral opposition’ was witnessed in the Merve Kavakci incident in 1999, when the move- ment tried to build bridges between the secular and Islamist camps, while criticising and educating both parties during the post-February 28 period in Turkey. In this way the Gülen movement’s performance of opposition can contribute new theoretical and practical tools for our understanding of social movements. 104 | P a g e Recent works on social movements have criticized the longstanding tradition of classify- ing social movement types as “strategy-oriented” versus “identity-oriented” (Touraine 1981; Cohen 1985; Rucht 1988) and “identity logic of action” versus “instrumentalist logic of ac- tion” (Duyvendak and Giugni 1995) by regarding identities as a key element of a move- ment’s strategic and tactical repertoire (see Bernstein 1997, 2002; Gamson 1997; Polletta 1998a; Polletta and Jasper 2001; Taylor and Van Dyke 2004). Bifurcation of identity ver- sus strategy suggests the idea that some movements target the state and the economy, thus, they are “instrumental” and “strategy-oriented”; whereas some other movements so-called “identity movements” challenge the dominant cultural patterns and codes and are considered “expressive” in content and “identity-oriented.” New social movement theorists argue that identity movements try to gain recognition and respect by employing expressive strategies wherein the movement itself becomes the message (Touraine 1981; Cohen 1985; Melucci 1989, 1996). Criticizing these dualisms, some scholars have shown the possibility of different social movement behaviour under different contextual factors (e.g. Bernstein 1997; Katzenstein 1998). In contrast to new social movement theory, this work on the Gülen movement indi- cates that identity movements are not always expressive in content and do not always follow an identity-oriented approach; instead, identity movements can synchronically be strategic as well as expressive. In her article on strategies and identities in Black Protest movements during the 1960s, Polletta (1994) criticizes the dominant theories of social movements, which a priori assume challengers’ unified common interests. Similarly, Jenkins (1983: 549) refers to the same problem in the literature by stating that “collective interests are assumed to be relatively unproblematic and to exist prior to mobilization.” By the same token, Taylor and Whittier (1992: 104) criticize the longstanding lack of explanation “how structural inequality gets translated into subjective discontent.” The dominant social movement theory approaches such as resource mobilization and political process regard these problems as trivial because of their assumption that identities and framing processes can be the basis for interests and further collective action but cannot change the final social movement outcome. Therefore, for the proponents of the mainstream theories, identities of actors are formed in evolutionary processes wherein social movements consciously frame their goals and produce relevant dis- courses; yet, these questions are not essential to explain why collective behaviour occurs (see McAdam, McCarthy, and Zald 1996). This reductionist view of movement culture has been criticized by a various number of scholars (e.g. Goodwin and Jasper 1999; Polletta 1997, 1999a, 1999b; Eyerman 2002). In fact, the debate over the emphases (interests vis-à-vis identities) is a reflection of the dissent between American and European sociological traditions. As Eyerman and Jamison (1991: 27) note, the American sociologists focused on “the instrumentality of movement strategy formation, that is, on how movement organizations went about trying to achieve their goals,” whereas the European scholars concerned with the identity formation processes that try to explain “how movements produced new historical identities for society.” Although the social movement theorists had recognized the deficiencies within each approach, the attempts to synthesize these two traditions in the literature failed to address the empirical problems and methodological difficulties. While criticizing the mainstream American collective behaviour approaches that treat the collective identities as given, many leading European scholars fell into a similar trap by a 105 | P a g e priori assuming that the collective identities are socio-historical products rather than cog- nitive processes (see, for instance, Touraine 1981). New Social Movement (NSM) theory, which is an offshoot of European tradition, has lately been involved in the debate over “cog- nitive praxis” (Eyerman and Jamison 1991), “signs” (Melucci 1996), “identity as strategy” (Bernstein 1997), protest as “art” (Jasper 1997), “moral performance” (Eyerman 2006), and “storytelling” (Polletta 2006). In general, these new formulations attempt to bring mental structures of social actors and symbolic nature of social action back in the study of collec- tive behaviour. The mental structures of the actors should be considered seriously because they have a potential to change the social movement behaviours, tactics, strategies, timing, alliances and outcomes. The most important failure, I think, in the dominant SM approaches lies behind the fact that they hinder the possibility of the construction of divergent collective identities under the same structures (cf. Polletta 1994: 91). This study investigates on how the Gülen movement differed from other Islamic social move- ments under the same structural factors that were realized by the organized opposition against Islamic activism after the soft coup in 1997. Two propositions shall lead my discussion here: First, unlike many Islamic revivalist movements, the Gülen movement shaped its identity against perceived threat of the triple enemies, what Nursi defined a century ago: ignorance, disunity, and poverty. This perception of the opposition is crucial to grasp non-political men- tal structures of the Gülen movement followers. Second, unlike the confrontational nature of the new social movements, the Gülen movement engaged in a “moral opposition,” in which the movement actors try to empathize with the enemy by creating “dialogic” relationships.
