Abstract:
This paper investigates empirically the effects of mergers within the British manufacturing industry on the trade component of the balance of payments. The effects of different merger rates over time on the trade component of the balance of payments are examined for the period 1880-1969. The effects of different merger rates over industry on the import/export performance of those industries are examined for the period 1969-1983. The results show that mergers had an adverse effect on the trade balance over the period 1880-1969 and that mergers did not determine the industries' performance over the period 1969-1983. It is argued that the neutral effects during the most recent period, are the result (actual and deterrent) of the Monopolies and Mergers Act 1965 and not due to similar merger movements in the main trade partner countries.

Abstract:
Prevalence of antibody to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 was assessed in consecutive serum samples from a total of 3700 women pregnant in 1969, 1983, or 1989 from the same catchment area in Stockholm. There was little change in seroprevalence of antibody to herpes simplex type 1 in the 3 groups, but age-adjusted herpes simplex virus type 2 antibody prevalence was 19, 33, and 33% respectively. Increase in type 2 seropositivity with age was slight and similar in 1969 and 1989, but steep in 1983, indicating a shift in sexual behaviour. However, rising prevalence in women will be mirrored by rising prevalence in their male partners. The increase from 1969 to 1989 will thus partly be due to higher risk of infection per partner, and cannot be taken as direct evidence of increased rate of partner change during this 20-year period.

Abstract:
Usher syndrome, also known as retinitis pigmentosa-dysacusis syndrome, is an extremely rare genetic disorder, characterized by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and congenital sensorineural hearing loss. It has been estimated to account for 3-6% of the congenitally deaf population, upto 8-33% of individuals with RP and half of all cases with combined deafness and blindness (Vernon M,1969; Boughman JA et al,1983). The prevalence of Usher syndrome have been reported to range from 3.5 to 6.2 per 100,000 in different populations (Vernon M,1969; Boughman JA et al,1983; Yan D et al, 2010).We report a case of Usher syndrome type I in an adult Nepalese male with typical congenital profound hearing loss, and night blindness secondary to retinitis pigmentosa.

Abstract:
The importance of serial sections for the analysis of the morphology of fossil organisms has been stressed by a number of authors (e.g., Westbroek, 1967, 1969; Cooper, 1983; Sandy, 1986, this volume, Chapter 14) because they provide a way to visualize the three-dimensional structure, both internal and external, of specimens that cannot be studied in other ways. The importance of internal structures for the taxonomy of many groups (e.g., the brachidia of brachiopods; Westbroek et al., 1976; Cooper, 1983) makes the study of serial sections imperative in many cases for proper taxonomic identification.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: ritmo; poesia lírica; século XX.Abstract: This paper proposes an analysis of the following five books of lyric poetry published by Orides Fontela: Transposição (1969), Helianto (1973), Alba (1983), Rosácea (1986) and Teia (1996), by means of the Poesia reunida [1969-1996] metrification. The article aims to understand some ways in which the metric participates in the elaboration of silent aesthetics. In this regard, the results shed light on the aesthetic resources employed by the author, such as the predominance of short verses; the broken verses; the logodaedalia; the stanzas with falling metric; and the blank space as empty metric. Finally, the text concludes that Orides Fontela’s metric leads towards a sound loss, expressing the broad notion of emptiness that constitutes one of the fundamental points of the author’s lyric poetry. Keywords: rhythm; lyric poetry; twentieth century.

Four generic names for Brachyura were found to be preoccupied: Epithelphusa Rodríguez & Smalley, 1969, Forsteria Bott, 1969, Odhneria Sakai, 1983, and Villalobosus Ng & Alvarez, 2000. Replacement names are here proposed for them. Two junior homonyms, Psaumis Kossmann, 1877, and Quadrella Dana, 1851, do not need to be replaced as the senior homonyms have not been used as valid names since 1899, and the implementation of Article 23 of the Code allows the names to be maintained as a nomina protecta. The nomenclature of three other names: Mithrax Latreille, 1816, Naxia Latreille, 1825, and Thia Leach, 1816, are also discussed.

Abstract:
The concept of using a stent to maintain patency of a lumen is not new. As early as 1969, stents were being investigated in the peripheral arterial system as a means of preventing restenosis after dilatation by balloon angioplasty (Dotter, 1969). Since then, numerous reports have demonstrated the use of stents in both the peripheral and coronary artery systems (Maass et al., 1982; Dotter et al., 1983; Wright et al., 1985; Palmaz et al., 1987). Concomitant with the investigation of expandable endovascular metal prosthesis has been the development of prosthetic devices for management of tracheobronchial, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary diseases. We will review the use of endoscopically placed prosthetic devices in the management of diseases affecting these systems.

Abstract:
SummaryThe 2007 amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983 and their accompanying Code of Practice produced new guidance on the limits of parental influence over young people's ability to consent. Previously, professional practice on decision-making and consent was guided by a combination of the Mental Health Act 1983 Code of Practice, the Family Law Reform Act 1969 and evolving English and Welsh case law. The 2007 amendments to the 1983 Act take heed of such influences and the Code of Practice specifically includes reference to European case law. What was previously left open to balanced professional interpretation has now been formalised into statute law. A central facet of this is the introduction of the concept of the zone of parental control, which derives largely from European case law. This article considers the derivation from case law of this novel concept and in particular its relationship with the European Convention on Human Rights.

Abstract:
Literacy underwent revolutionary growth in northwestern Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This revolution coincided with other dramatic changes in European society, such as the industrial, demographic, agricultural, political, and religious revolutions (Deane 1969: 20–84). While the relationships between literacy and these other revolutions are not fully understood, their association is apparent and many potential influences exist (Cipolla 1969; Cremin 1970; Graff 1981: 232–60; 1987a, 1987b; Jensen 1986: 114–28; Maynes 1985: 117–31; Mitch 1984, 1988; Sanderson 1983; West 1978). The transplantation of European society across the Atlantic brought the literacy revolution to the American periphery. While numerous studies have shown that colonial America participated in this expansion of literacy, the common longitudinal patterns of literacy growth across the various regions and populations of colonial America have received less attention.

Abstract:
The late Jurassic Paulchoffatiinae, one of two named subfamilies of the family Paulchoffatiidae (suborder Plagiaulacoidea), are generally recognized as the most primitive known, undoubted multituberculates (e.g., Hahn, 1969; Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska, 1979; Hahn and Hahn, 1983; Hahn et al., 1989). Despite the primitive morphology of members of this subfamily (Paulchoffatia and Pseudobolodon), three features have been posited as autapomorphic for the subfamily (or family), and thus to preclude it from the ancestry of later multituberculates: 1) the distribution of cusps on M2 (Hahn, 1969, 1971); 2) the complex structure of I3 (Hahn, 1969, 1971); and 3) the position of M2 relative to M1 (Van Valen, 1976; Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska, 1979; Hahn, 1987). Van Valen (1976) argued that the first two features are not unequivocally autapomorphic for paulchoffatiines and that they could, and indeed should, be considered primitive for the order. Hahn (1977) responded to Van Valen's assessment but Clemens and Kielan-Jaworowska (1979, p. 138) opined that “neither argument is particularly compelling” in light of the poor early record of multituberculates and the consequent lack of knowledge concerning morphological variability.

Abstract:
Despite a growing interest by anthropologists in the process whereby peasants have been incorporated into a modern industrialized economy as ‘post-peasants’, ‘peasant-workers’, or ‘part-time farmers’, comparatively little research has focused upon the community level of social integration as an important facet of this process (see Barlett 1980: 553, 560–1). For the most part, this lack of concern can probably be attributed to the fact that much of the research devoted to post-peasants has been conducted in European societies where community-wide types of cooperation do not seem to have been particularly important with regard to the production strategies peasants followed in their adaptation to conditions of rapid sociocultural change since the second world war (see Holmes 1983; Symes 1972; Redclift 1973; Minge-Kalman 1978; Franklin 1969: 10–15, 225–33; Tamanoi 1983).

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Atropellis cankers on lodgepole pine were counted in Alberta plots spaced to 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 or 8000 trees per hectare. Cankers were counted just after thinning in 1967, and again in 1969, 1971 and 1983. After spacing, fewest cankers developed at 500 trees per hectare, most at 4000 and 8000 per hectare. Number of cankers developed after spacing was directly related to stand density, linearly when both were transformed to logarithmic scales, and was unrelated to site aspect. Atropellis cankers were found most frequently or the north and northwest sides of stems. Spacing as a control measure is recommended.

Abstract:
Until recently, paleontologists believed tentaculitids became extinct by the end of the Frasnian. Lyaschenko (1958) described the youngest occurrence of the genera Styliolina and Homoctenus from the Frasnian of Russia. However, in Europe and North Africa, Lardeux (1969) proposed that Homoctenus ultimus pergracilis persisted into the Famennian. Sauerland (1983) reported the occurrence in France of the genera Styliolina and Striatostyliolina in the cicatricosa ostracod Zone (Frasnian), and Homoctenus in the splendens ostracod Zone (Frasnian-Famennian, upper gigas—middle triangularis conodont Zones). The first report of Famennian tentaculitids in China was from the Dachang area in Guangxi Province, China by Li and Hamada (1986).

Abstract:
The marine mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a widely distributed bivalve, especially abundant on wave washed exposed rocky shores (Lewis, 1964). Investigations on the reproductive and settlement cycles of M. edulis in Irish waters have concentrated to date on sheltered shore populations (Wilson & Seed, 1974; Seed & Brown, 1975; Rodhouse et al., 1984; McKenzie, 1986). An exception to this is a brief account of settlement in Bantry Bay (Cross & Southgate, 1983). Elsewhere in Europe, investigations on the biology of exposed-shore mussels is restricted to the extensive studies of Seed (1969) on the north-east coast of Britain.

Abstract:
Although the concept of social banditry has received much critical attention since E. Hobsbawm published his book in 1969, the debate so far has perhaps been narrowly focused (Blok 1972; Vanderwood 1981; Dreissen 1983; Hart 1987; Koliopoulos 1987). Too often that debate has been framed in terms of whether bandits either express pre-political sentiments or prevent the emergence of peasant solidarity, rather than in terms of which types of rural structures encourage its emergence and reproduction, the psychology and sociology of terror, and how bandit myths may be created and used within nation-states or societies aspiring to nationhood.

Abstract:
It is shown that pulsar statistics are in good agreement with the theory of current (plasma) energy losses of a neutron star. Up to now two theories of pulsar braking have been considered. The first well known model is connected with the radiation of vacuum magneto-dipole waves (Ostriker and Gunn 1969). However, according to the electrodynamical theory of pulsars, the presence of a rather dense plasma in the magnetosphere of a neutron star leads inevitably to a complete suppression of magneto-dipole losses—the dynamics of the stellar slow down is determined by the longitudinal current only (Beskin, Gurevich, and Istomin 1983).

Abstract:
Analyzing data from the Retirement History Study, the authors find that the retirement plans of male workers aged 58–63 in 1969 were significantly affected by unanticipated events over the next decade. Specifically, unanticipated increases in Social Security wealth induced retirement earlier than originally planned, as did deterioration in personal health, whereas the recession of the 1970s tended to delay retirement. This evidence that policy changes do affect retirement behavior in systematic ways provides support for the decision by Congress to defer until the turn of the century the application of several important provisions of the 1983 amendments to the Social Security Act.

AbstractThe Thames, Yare and Bure Fields, discovered in 1973, 1969 and 1983 respectively, are located in the UK sector of the Southern Gas Basin. The reservoir is made up predominantly of aeolian dune sandstones of the Rotliegendes Leman Sandstone Formation. The fields lie on the upthrown side of NW-SE-trending fault blocks in the central part of Block 49/28. The Thames complex came on production in October 1986 and is estimated to have a field life of 10 years. Current estimates put gas in place for the three fields at approximately 350 BCF, with recoverable reserves of 240 BCF.

IN Case C-188/95 Fantask A/S and Others v. Industriministeriet (Erhvervsministeriet) [1997] E.C.R. I-6783 the European Court of Justice provided further guidance on the interpretation of Council Directive 69/335 EEC of 17 July 1969 concerning indirect taxes on the raising of capital (O.J. English Special Edition 1969 (II), p. 412), as most recently amended by Council Directive 85/303/EEC of 10 June 1985 (O.J. 1985 L 156, p. 23), and elaborated its case law concerning Member State remedies and procedural rules. More particularly, it was held that a national rule which would have allowed Danish authorities to escape the duty to refund charges levied in breach of the Directive on the ground of “excusable error” rendered Community law impossible in practice or excessively difficult to enforce (Case 199/82 Amministrazione delle Finanze dello Stato v. San Giorgio [1983] E.C.R. 3595), while a five-year time limit for bringing proceedings under Danish law was upheld as a reasonable limitation period (cf. Case C-208/90 Emmott v. SUMMARYA representative soil sampling survey of arable and grassland fields in England and Wales between 1969 and 1983 is described. The results show that of the rotationally cropped area 29% was below pH 6·5, and of the continuous grassland 46% was below pH 6·0. Levels of P and K were satisfactory except that 15% of grassland soils were low for P.Data obtained by re-sampling the same fields at intervals of 5 years show that changes in the proportions of crops grown at different levels of pH and nutrients have been small. There has been some increase in the proportion of continuous grassland at lower pH, but the proportions of soils with low P and K have tended to decrease.
