Abstract:
A study of the species of the tribe Acanthoderini (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Lamiinae) described by Ernst Fuchs and deposited in the Herbert Schmid private collection is presented. Four new synonyms are established: Acanthoderes (Psapharochrus) curvistriatus Tippmann, 1960 = Acanthoderes (Psapharochrus) griseofasciata Fuchs, 1958; Acanthoderes (Psapharochrus) minuta Fuchs, 1958 = Idiomerus difficilis Melzer, 1934; Acanthoderes (Psapharochrus) sexmaculatus Fuchs, 1961 = Acanthoderes schmithi Melzer, 1935; and Sorelia cervina Lane, 1965 = Oreodera ferruginea Fuchs, 1964. Two new combinations are proposed: Oreodera hassenteufeli (Fuchs, 1958) from Acanthoderes (Pasapharochrus) and Sorelia ferruginea (Fuchs, 1964) from Oreodera. Acanthoderes (Psapharochrus) virescens Fuchs, 1962 is transferred to the subgenus Scythropopsis Thomson, 1864. Notes on the type-material and the geographical distribution are added for each species.

Abstract:
Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Green, A. Richard, Jeffrey K. Aronson, and Peter M. Haddad. "Examining the ‘psychopharmacology revolution’ (1950–1980) through the advertising of psychoactive drugs in the British Medical Journal." Journal of Psychopharmacology 32, no. 10 (September 25, 2018): 1056–66. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0269881118796810.

Abstract:
Background: Many modern pharmaceutical products were launched during 1950–1980, as reflected in advertisements in the British Medical Journal ( BMJ). One of the first therapeutic areas to benefit from novel effective medications was psychiatry. Methods: We examined BMJ advertising material between 1950 and 1980, including every other issue over six-month periods (October–March) in 1950/1951, 1955/1956, 1957/1958, 1960/1961, 1962/1963, 1965/1966, 1967/1968, 1970/1971, 1972/1973, 1975/1976, 1980/1981. We recorded numbers of adverts for all pharmaceutical products and for psychiatric drugs; we also recorded trade names, generic names and marketing company. Results: Advertising in BMJ peaked in the 1960s and declined markedly in the 1970s. Adverts for psychiatric drugs as a percentage of total pharmaceutical product advertising was broadly similar during 1955–1980, but with peaks in 1960/1961, 1970/1971 and 1975/1976, reflecting the entry of several novel compounds into the market. The peak marketing of antipsychotic drugs, sedatives and anxiolytic drugs was in 1960 and of antidepressants 1970. The time course of the rise of tricyclics and the switch from barbiturates to benzodiazepines can be seen. Drugs for psychiatry rose from ninth (1955/1956) to fourth (1975/1976) in terms of the number of products in the top 10 therapeutic areas. There is no evidence that they were advertised more aggressively (number of adverts/number of products). Conclusions: The birth of modern psychopharmacology is reflected in th e advertising of psychiatric drugs in BMJ. Many drugs currently used, or their closely related successors, were launched in the early to mid-1960s. This rise in modern pharmaceuticals preceded several other major therapeutic areas.

Abstract:
Diosdado Macapagal, Philippine President from 1961-1965, whose career was made rich by working in the foreign service, belonged to a tradition of championing a Foreign Policy shaped under America’s tutelage, adhering to democratic ideals, dismissive of Communism, and indifferent to neutralism and non-alignment. While various groups branded this policy as one of mendicancy that jeopardized Philippine Independence itself, President Manuel Roxas, who instituted it in 1946, was given little to no option but to side with America. The Second World War’s apocalyptic results required prompt and massive reconstruction and industrialization, necessitating foreign aid. This study reveals a chapter in the Philippines’ Cold War History, which show instances of balancing the state of dependence on America with neo-realist postures. Macapagal worked for Land Reform to peacefully address Communism within and collaborated with America in the name of national security to counter possible foreign communist infiltration. In an anarchic world forged by Cold War developments, Macapagal secured US financial and military assistance and defended national interest in a neorealist posture to the point of championing views more orthodox and even contrary to that of America. Filipino’s preference for collaboration with America made the neo-colonial situation manageable at that time, to still reap whatever the superpower is willing to give while it promoted its own global agenda. Macapagal worked within this neo-colonial setting by balancing dependency and neorealism. References Abaya, Hernando. Our Vaunted Press: A Critique. Philippine Graphic 35, no. 16 (1968). Abstract:
Between June 1959 and March 1964, the democratic governments of Brazilian presidents Juscelino Kubitschek (January 1956 – January 1961), Janio Quadros (January–August 1961), Ranieri Mazzilli (August–September 1961) and João ‘Jango’ Goulart (September 1961 – April 1964) received no support from the World Bank (WB), which refused to fund even a single new project during this period. During this same period, and, more specifically, between July 1958 and January 1965, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the WB's twin institution, granted financial assistance to Brazil only twice: a controversial and highly conditional Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) signed in May 1961; and a non-conditional and automatically approved Compensatory Financial Facility (CFF), granted in May 1963 to compensate Brazil for the decrease in coffee prices on the international market. This attitude towards Brazil changed significantly following the military coup of March 1964. Money flowed into the country and by 1970 Brazil had become the largest receiver of WB funds and a chronic borrower from the IMF, signing two SBAs in 1965, and one per year between 1966 and 1972. We use recently disclosed material from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank archives to analyse the relationship of these two institutions with Brazil and to foster the debate on their political neutrality, arguing that the difference in the IMF's and especially the WB's relations with the military regime reflected, more than anything else, the existence of an ideological affinity between the parties with regards to the ‘right’ economic policy.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 1960, the Congolese people elected Patrice Lumumba as Prime Minister of the Congo. In 1961, after a complicated development on international events, the CIA financed Belgium troops murdered Lumumba via firing squad. This paper will focus on Belgium’s colonial attempt to use the media to attack Lumumba’s political image. From 1956-1960, it will elaborate on the rise of Belgium’s media attempts as a counter to the growing support of Lumumba’s pro-independence identity. It will then focus on this same struggle in the context of the U.N. and Ralph Bunche’s presence in the Congo. Consequently, it intersects with U.S. reaction against Lumumba’s political identity in the summer of 1960.The final section will assess Belgium, U.S. and U.N. attempts to damage Lumumba’s political identity by using the media and their political voices. The three sections will add to the strong scholarly work on Lumumba by combining the chronological approach of previous historians to interrogate a critical time period in one of many of Lumumba’s political struggles. This essay will argue that from 1955 to 1965, Belgium and the United States sought to protect their economic exploitation of the Congo by using the media to delegitimize Patrice Lumumba’s political legacy as violent, uncivilized, and unworthy of independence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Wzajemna wymiana doświadczeń skutkowała wzrostem poziomu wyszkolenia sportowego, budowaniu zrębów przyjaźni między obu społecznościami, a wyjazdy zagraniczne stwarzały możliwość bliższego poznania regionów i kultury mieszkającej tam ludności. Wzrastający poziom wyszkolenia skutkował uczestnictwem w turniejach ogólnopolskich, mistrzostwach Polski, a w roku 1978 rozegrano nawet mecz z przebywającą w Polsce drużyną stanu Colorado (USA). Abstract:
The lunar tides in earth current (viz., Telluric current) at Barrow (71° 18'N, 156°47'W) have been studied by using hourly values of N-S and E-W components for the period 1963-1965 and 1961-1962, respectively. The study shows that significant results can be obtained from data for even short periods of Telluric current. Further it has been found that there is good agreement between lunar semi-diurnal oscillations in earth currents (studied by Egedal and Rougerie) and Telluric current (present study).

Abstract:
Prenatal malnutrition may increase the risk of depressive symptoms in adulthood. This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to malnutrition with risk of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older adults using the Chinese Great Famine of 1959–1961 as a natural experiment. Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study baseline survey (2011). A total of 5391 individuals born from 1956 to 1965 were included in the study. Depressive symptoms were ascertained via the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale short form. Famine severity was measured using the cohort size shrinkage index. Difference-in-differences models were used to explore the association between prenatal famine exposure and later-life depressive symptoms. Compared with the post-famine cohort (1963–1965), famine cohorts (1959–1962) were 4.74 times (95% CI = 1.28–8.20) as likely to develop depressive symptoms. The stratified analysis found that prenatal exposure to famine was associated with depressive symptoms in rural residents but not those living in urban areas. In rural females, prenatal malnutrition was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms. However, there was no significant association between prenatal malnutrition and depressive symptoms in rural males. Our results indicated that prenatal malnutrition may contribute to a higher risk for depressive symptoms in later life among female rural residents.

Abstract:
A szocialista pedagógia magyarországi megjelenésének 20 éves évfordulója alkalmából hét neveléstudós vis- szaemlékezése (Ágoston György, Jausz Béla, Kiss Árpád, Nagy Sándor, Földes Éva, Hermann Alice és Kelemen László) jelent meg Életemről, munkámról címmel 1963 és 1965 között a Pedagógiai Szemle hasábjain. Jelen vizsgálatunkban e hét visszaemlékezés közül egyet, a neveléslélektannal foglalkozó Kelemen László visszaemlékezését elemezzük.

Abstract:
AbstractThe largest series of Neolithic human skeletal material derives from Çatalhöyük, in the Konya plain of peninsular Turkey. The excavations were carried out by James Mellaart in three seasons between 1961 and 1964 (Mellaart 1962; 1963; 1965). Larry Angel of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, and Denise Ferembach of the Musée de L'Homme, Paris, worked on the material in the mid-1960s (Angel 1971; Ferembach 1972). Angel was primarily interested in recording pathological conditions, and Ferembach in recording skeletal metrics; consequently their two sample sets are not entirely the same. Where there is overlap, in general their sex determinations agree. Neither published any detailed study of the jaws or teeth, and yet these are now the most intact part of the material. It is this collection of jaws and teeth that has been the subject of our study, which is an attempt to provide a comprehensive analysis of the dentitions of a Neolithic sample.

Abstract:
We review the current state of taxonomy of the oribatid mite genus Metabelba Grandjean, 1936 (Damaeidae) and present an amended generic diagnosis. In contrast to Subías (2004) we consider Allobelba Kunst, 1961 and Neobelba BulanovaZachvatkina, 1967 as separate genera, not subgenera of Metabelba. We consider the subgenus Metabelba (Parametabel- ba) Mihelčič, 1964, to be a nomen nudum and propose a new subgenus—Metabelba (Pateribelba) n. subg., with type species Metabelba (Pateribelba) sphagni Strenzke, 1950—to replace it. Pateribelba n. subg. includes species of Metabelba without the propodolateral apophysis. Together with the type species, the following named species (new combinations) belong to this subgenus: Metabelba (Pateribelba) italica (Sellnick, 1931); M. (P.) romandiolae (Sellnick, 1943); M. (P.) platynotus Grandjean, 1954; M. (P.) ericius Kunst, 1957; M. (P.) rhodopeia Kunst, 1961; M. (P.) filippovi Bulanova-Zachvatkina, 1965; M. (P.) flagelliseta Bulanova-Zachvatkina, 1965; M. (P.) monilipeda Bulanova-Zachvatkina, 1965; M. (P.) pseudoitalica Bulanova-Zachvatkina, 1965; M. (P.) paraitalica Kulijev, 1967, M. (P.) glabriseta Mahunka, 1982 and M. (P.) machadoi Pérez-Iñigo, 1986. A new species Metabelba (Pateribelba) denscanis n. sp. is described and illustrated; it is characterized mainly by the presence of a notogastral cornicle in the adult. It was found in Central Bohemia (Czech Republic), Upper Silesia (Poland) and South Tyrol (Italy). Metabelba romandiolae and M. sphagni are redescribed and illustrated. Metabelba gladiator Mihelčič, 1963 is considered to be junior synonym of M. romandiolae. Metabelba lanceolata van der Hammen, 1952 is considered to be a junior synonym of M. sphagni. We also provide a ten-tative diagnostic key of the known species of Metabelba (Pateribelba) n. subg., based on detailed study of available species and a review of literature data.

Abstract:
The early career of Herbert Blankenhorn (1904–1991) illustrates important trends in the transition from Nazi Germany to the Federal Republic. During the 1930s and 1940s he served as a diplomat in the German Foreign Office and also joined the Nazi Party in 1938. After 1945 he would play a very public role in the creation of a new political culture in West Germany. Konrad Adenauer thought that the exceptional political sense of his young personal assistant, who also served as Secretary General of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the British Zone, helped him become chancellor of the Federal Republic in 1949. Through the mid-1950s Blankenhorn remained one of Adenauer's most intimate advisors, especially on matters concerning foreign policy. From late 1949 to mid-1950, he also oversaw the creation of what became the West German Auswärtiges Amt (Foreign Office), and thereafter he was the head of its Political Division and deputy to State Secretary Walter Hallstein until 1955. He went on to serve as West German ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (1955–1958), France (1958–1963), Italy (1963–1965), and the United Kingdom (1965–1970). After retiring from the diplomatic service in 1970, Blankenhorn functioned as the West German representative in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Executive Council until 1976.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractAfrotropical bark beetle genera in the tribe Micracidini are revised and an identification key provided. The new classification is based on phylogenetic analyses of five molecular markers (COI, EF-1α, 28S, PABP1, CAD) in combination with morphological characters. Five new genera are erected and one genus synonymized, resulting in a total of 11 valid genera: Lanurgus Eggers, 1920, Traglostus Schedl, 1938, Pseudomicracis Eggers, 1920 (=Saurotocis Wood, 1984 syn. nov.), Phloeocurus Wood, 1984, Afromicracis Schedl, 1959, Dendrochilus Schedl, 1959, Neomicracis Jordal gen. nov., Leiomicracis Jordal gen. nov., Diplotrichus Jordal gen. nov., Pseudolanurgus Jordal gen. nov., Microlanurgus Jordal gen. nov. The following new species are described to be included in the new genera: Leiomicracis aurea Jordal sp. nov., Neomicracis squamigera Jordal sp. nov., both from Tanzania, and Microlanurgus bicolor Jordal sp. nov. and Microlanurgus ater Jordal sp. nov., from Madagascar. The following new synonyms and new combinations are proposed: Afromicracis dubius (Schedl, 1950) (=Afromicracis angolensis Schedl, 1962 syn. nov.), Afromicacis elongatulus (Schedl, 1977) comb. nov.,Afromicracis jasminiae (Schedl 1957) comb. nov. (=Dendrochilus mikaniae Schedl 1957 syn. nov.), Afromicracis robustus (Schedl 1957) comb. nov. (=Dendrochilus arundinarius Schedl 1957 syn. nov., =Hypothenemus bambusae Browne, 1970 syn. nov., =Dendrochilus filum Schedl, 1977 syn. nov.) (all from Dendrochilus), Afromicracis setifer (Schedl 1957) comb. nov. (Mimiocurus), Lanurgus longipilis (Schedl, 1958) comb. nov., Lanurgus pubescens (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov. (both from Traglostus), Diplotrichus catenatus (Schedl, 1953) comb. nov.,Diplotrichus elongatus (Schedl, 1950) comb. nov.,Diplotrichus euphorbia (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov.,Diplotrichus gracilis (Schedl, 1958) comb. nov.,Diplotrichus minor (Schedl, 1950) comb. nov (=Lanurgus frontalis Schedl, 1953 syn. Nov.), Diplotrichus obesus (Schedl, 1953) comb. nov., Diplotrichus pygmaeus (Schedl, 1965) comb. nov., Diplotrichus rugosipes (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov., Diplotrichus subdepressus (Schedl, 1965) comb. nov., Diplotrichus widdringtoniae (Schedl, 1962) comb. nov. (all from Lanurgus), Diplotrichus ignotus (Schedl, 1965) comb. nov. (Pseudomicracis), Pseudolanurgus harunganae (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov. (=Lanurgus cribrellus Schedl, 1965 syn. nov.), Pseudolanurgus bugekeae (Schedl, 1957) comb. nov. (both from Pseudomicracis), Pseudolanurgus minutissimus (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov. (Lanurgus), Pseudomicracis dispar (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov., Pseudomicracis tomicoides (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov. (both from Saurotocis). The following taxa were transferred to genera in other tribes: Acanthotomicus intermedius (Schedl, 1977) comb. nov., Xylocleptes villiersi (Lepesme, 1942) comb. nov. (both from Dendrochilus); Eidophelus agnathus (Schedl, 1942) comb. nov., and Eidophelus ciliatipennis (Schedl, 1979) comb. nov. (all from Miocryphalus). The following five species were included in Karlseniusgen. nov. (Trypophloeini): Karlsenius klainedoxae (Schedl, 1957) comb. nov., Karlsenius nitidum (Schedl, 1965) comb. nov., Karlsenius nigrinum (Schedl, 1957) comb. nov., and Karlsenius attenuatus (Eggers, 1935) comb. nov. (from Miocryphalus), and Karlsenius ghanaensis (Schedl, 1977) comb. nov. (from Eidophelus). A time-tree and biogeographical analysis suggested that Madagascar was colonized only once in Micracidini, from East Africa soon after the origin of the tribe in late Cretaceous. Multiple re-colonisations from Madagascar to the mainland have contributed to further diversification of a tribe which is otherwise highly restricted in geographical distribution.

Abstract:
This article discusses two relatively unknown works of Yilmaz Güney in the English-speaking world: Boynu Bükük Öldüler (They Bowed their Heads in Shame),1 a semi-autobiographical novel, which in 1972 won the Orhan Kémel prize, and Arkadaş (The Friend), a film released in Turkey by Güney Film in 1974. More than ten years separate these two works. The Fields of Yuréghir was written during Güney’s imprisonment from 1960 to 1963, a period marked by the military coup of 27 May 1960, which lasted until 1961 and a series of coalition governments from 1961 to 1965 under the premiership of İsmet İnönü (1884-1973) of the Republican Party. Arkadaş was filmed in 1974 against the backdrop of the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus in August 1974, a time of great patriotic fervour under the charismatic and left-leaning premiership of Bülent Ecevit (1925-2006). Güney had by then experienced considerable success as a filmmaker and actor. Arkadaş is a product of this favourable constellation of circumstances, both political and personal, that marked this brief period that was abruptly ended by his imprisonment in September 1974. The article is divided into the following sections: a short biography of Yilmaz Güney; a summary of The Fields of Yuréghir and Arkadaş; a thematic analysis of the two works under the headings of political engagement, sexual mores, religion, and national identity; and a conclusion.

Т. I; 1982. Т. II). In a review of the book “Nikolai Bagaev. Life and Works” – thoughts caused by the publication of some scientific works, translations of stories into Ossetian – “The Mantle” by N.V. Gogol, “If you are a Negro...” Solya Green; with the publication of reviews and reports of the scientist’s works, as well as with memories of the Ossetian scholar Nikolai Konstantinovich Bagaev. The compiler of the collection is Boris Razhdenovich Khoziev, Eminent Culture Figure of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania and the Russian Federation, Eminent Science Figure of the Republic of South Ossetia, member of the International Organization of Journalists, member of the Union of Journalists and the Union of Writers of Russia, graduate of the Faculty of Ossetian Philology, grateful student of N.K. Bagaev. A short excursion undertaken by us discovered that the grammar of the Ossetian was presented in Ossetian studies by the works of A.J. Sjögren, 1844), Vs.F. Miller (1904, 1963); “Syntax of the Ossetian language” K.E. Gagkaev (1956), as well as “Grammar of the Ossetian”, ed. acad. G.S. Akhvlediani (1963) and others. It is known that during the Soviet period in primary and secondary schools they studied using the textbooks of B.A. Alborov, M.A. Guriev, B.G. Karsanov, N.I. Arsagov, K. Gutnov, as well as associate professor N.K. Bagaev (part I, 1965, grades 5–6; part II, 1961, for high school). The most complete description of the modern Ossetian language was the two-volume edition of “Modern Ossetian” (Ordzhonikidze, 1965, volume I; 1982, volume II) by N.K. Bagaev. More than one generation of Ossetian philologists grew up on this richly illustrated textbook.

Abstract:
Plumes can emit from stacks of power plants, refineries and so on. Plume rise depends on multiple factors including stack exit diameter, exhaust gas velocity, effluent temperature, wind speed, lapse rate etc. Increased stack height because of plume rise plays a significant part in reducing ground level concentrations of air pollutants in downwind direction. Various equations have been proposed for prediction of plume rise such as Holland (1953), Rauch (1962), Briggs (1965) etc. In the present paper a plume rise formula was derived from the Rauch (1962) and Lucas-Moore-Spurr (1963) equations. The results revealed that: 1) the derived equation calculated plume rise more accurately than the Stone and Clarke (1967), Lucas-Moore-Spurr (1963) and Csanady (1961) formulas, 2) the derived formula overestimated plume rise by a factor of approximately two and 3) the coefficient of heat emission rate played a key role in calculation of plume rise.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mid-1960s witnessed a landmark change in the area of civil rights policy in the United States. After a series of tortuous internal battles, with Southern legislators using all available procedural tools to maintain their states' discriminatory Jim Crow legal systems, the United States Congress adopted two statutes—the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965—which insured civil and political equality for all Americans. The Acts of 1964 and 1965 were the culmination of a decade-long struggle by black Americans to secure the citizenship rights that had been denied to them for more than a half century. Beginning with the Brown v. Board of Education (1954) Supreme Court decision, the civil rights movement built momentum, as formal organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) grew in strength and informal (grass roots) organizations spread throughout the South and the Nation. As national public opinion shifted increasingly toward providing new civil rights guarantees for blacks, Congress responded with new legislation: the Civil Rights Act of 1957 (the first civil rights law since 1875), the Civil Rights Act of 1960, and a legislative proposal to prohibit the poll tax in 1962 (which would be ratified by three-quarters of the states in 1964 and become the 24th Amendment to the United States Constitution).

Abstract:
Utilizing content analysis methodology, this paper studies Pakistani press perceptions of external sources of threat and support covering the Period 1958-1965. From the literature on Pakistani foreign policy, seven specific hypotheses are extracted for testing: 1 - during the period 1958-1965, India was perceived to be the major threat to Pakistan ; 2 - the perception of India as the major threat increased sharply from 1962 onwards; 3 - in 1959 China was perceived to be a greater threat to Pakistan than India was; 4 - the Soviet Union was perceived to be the major threat in 1958, a significant but secondary threat in 1959, the main threat again in 1960, and an insignificant threat from 1961 onwards; 5 - at no time during the period 1958-1965 was the United States perceived to be a threat to Pakistan; 6 - the respective policies of China, the US.S.R., and the U.S. towards South Asia in general and on the Kashmir issue in particular, played a major part in determining Pakistan's attitudes toward these states; 7 - U.S. arms aid to India in 1962 resulted in a major Pakistani disillusionment with the United States and this was accompanied by more positive Pakistani views toward the US.S.R. and China. Our data drawn from front page news stores and editorials appearing in a sample of the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, confirm in general terms hypotheses 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7, but fall to confirm hypotheses 3 and 4. Overall, the data point to the significance of the Sino-Indian border war in the fall of 1962 as a crucial turning point in Pakistan 's foreign policy alignments. Specifically, we see evidence of a turning away from the United States, combined with a movement toward China. Attitudes toward the Soviet Union were ambivalent.

Abstract:
Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial morphology of children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) resulting from differing management protocols practiced in Prague from 1945 to 1976. Design The craniofacial morphologies of four groups of patients were compared. Two groups were assessed retrospectively (individuals born from 1945 to 1963), and two groups were followed on a longitudinal basis (individuals born from 1966 to 1976). Setting The study was conducted at the Cleft Lip and Palate Center at the Department of Plastic Surgery, Prague, which has a catchment area population of 6 million. Patients The subjects were a consecutive series of adult males (n = 84) who had complete UCLP without associated malformations. Interventions Patients born from 1945 to 1955 did not receive centralized orthodontic therapy. From 1945 to 1965, the alveolar process in the area of the cleft was not surgically repaired. Primary bone grafting was used for the group born from 1965 to 1972, and primary periosteoplasty was used in the subsequent period. Throughout the period covered by the study, the palate was operated on by pushback and pharyngeal flap surgery. From 1945 to 1965, the lip was repaired initially according to Veau, and later according to Tennison and Randall, and during this time, fixed appliances were used for orthodontic treatment. Results The results for the period from 1945 to 1955 are characterized by mandibular overclosure with anterior crossbite. Centralized orthodontic treatment in the later period improved sagittal jaw relations due to the posterior displacement of the mandible and an edge-to-edge bite was attained, but maxillary retrusion was unchanged. Primary bone grafting increased retrusion of the maxilla, which was compensated by further posterior displacement of the mandible. An edge-to-edge bite was also obtained. Primary periosteoplasty reduced maxillary retrusion, and the marked proclination of the upper dentoalveolar component with fixed appliances resulted in a positive overjet. It was no longer necessary to push the mandible back to the extent required in bone grafting. Conclusion Effective orthodontic treatment made the greatest contribution to improved facial development. It allowed compensation of maxillary retrusion by changes in the position of the mandible or by proclination of the upper dentoal-veolar component with fixed appliances. The applied surgical methods using primary bone grafting caused deterioration of the anterior growth of the maxilla.

Abstract:
ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate cohort effects in selected opioids use and determine whether cohort differences were associated with changes in risk factors for use over time.DesignThis study presents secondary analyses of a longitudinal survey panel of the general population that collected data biannually.SettingData from the Canadian Longitudinal National Population Health Survey 1994–2011.PopulationThis study included 12 542 participants from the following birth cohorts: post-World War I (born 1915–1924), pre-World War II (born 1925–1934), World War II (born 1935–1944), Older Baby Boom (born 1945–1954), Younger Baby Boom (born 1955–1964), Older Generation X (born 1965–1974) and Younger Generation X (born 1975–1984).Main outcomeResponses to a single question asking about the use of codeine, morphine or meperidine in the past month (yes/no) were examined.ResultsOver and above age and period effects, there were significant cohort differences in selected opioids use: each succeeding recent cohort had greater use than their predecessors (eg, Gen Xers had greater use than younger baby boomers). Selected opioids use increased significantly from 1994 to 2002, plateauing between 2002 and 2006 and then declining until 2011. After accounting for cohort and period effects, there was a decline in use of these opioids with increasing age. Although pain was significantly associated with greater selected opioids use (OR=3.63, 95% CI 3.39 to 3.94), pain did not explain cohort differences. Cohort and period effects were no longer significant after adjusting for the number of chronic conditions. Cohort differences in selected opioids use mirrored cohort differences in multimorbidity. Use of these opioids was significantly associated with taking antidepressants or tranquillisers (OR=2.52, 95% CI 2.27 to 2.81 and OR=1.60, 95% CI 1.46 to 1.75, respectively).ConclusionsThe findings underscore the need to consider multimorbidity including possible psychological disorders and associated medications when prescribing opioids (codeine, morphine, meperidine), particularly for recent birth cohorts. Continued efforts to monitor prescription patterns and develop specific opioid use guidelines for multimorbidity appear warranted.
