Abstract:
The article examines the music of Avenir de Monfred (1903–1974) for cartoons by Polish-French film director Walerian Borowczyk (1923–2006). The collaboration between de Monfred and Borowczyk lasted throughout the 1960s, when four works of different genres, graphics, drama and sound design were created in tandem with the director and composer: “Renaissance” (1963), “Encyclopedia of the Grandmother in 13 Volumes” (1963), “Concert of Monsieur and Madame Cabal” (1964), “The Theater of Monsieur and Madame Cabal” (1967). In the legacy of the film composer, music was not the predominant type of creativity, but the main features of de Monfred's style in the field of academic music can be traced in his film works.

Abstract:
Stephen L. Wood re-defined Platypus such that its members are native to realms outside of the Americas and transferred most Neotropical species out of that genus. I have come across 44 species that still remain, though, and these are treated here. In total, I report 49 new generic assignments, 30 of which are transfers out of Platypus. I propose 22 new synonymies, eight of which are Platypus species that are synonymized with previously transferred species. Six Neotropical species are left in Platypus, for reasons detailed in the text. These taxonomic acts affect the compositions of eight of the 11 Neotropical genera of core Platypodinae. The following species are transferred from Platypus Herbst, 1793: Cenocephalus dubiosus (Schedl, 1933) comb. nov., Cenocephalus neotruncatus (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov.; Costaroplatus barbosai (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov., Costaroplatus devius (Schedl, 1976) comb. nov., Costaroplatus mixtus (Schedl, 1976) comb. nov., Costaroplatus roppai (Schedl, 1978) comb. nov.; Epiplatypus bicaudatulus (Schedl, 1935) comb. nov., Epiplatypus carduus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov., Epiplatypus complanus (Schedl, 1967) comb. nov., Epiplatypus grandiporus (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov., Epiplatypus insculptus (Schedl, 1967) comb. nov., Epiplatypus macroporus (Chapuis, 1865) comb. nov., Epiplatypus perforans (Schedl, 1961) comb. nov., Epiplatypus propinquus (Schedl, 1959) comb. nov., Epiplatypus quadrispinatus (Chapuis, 1865) comb. nov., Epiplatypus sallei (Chapuis, 1865) comb. nov., Epiplatypus sequius (Schedl, 1935) comb. nov.; Euplatypus detectus (Schedl, 1976) comb. nov., Euplatypus erraticus (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov., Euplatypus longulus (Chapuis, 1865) comb. nov., Euplatypus perplexus Bright, 1972 comb. nov., Euplatypus rugosifrons (Schedl, 1933) comb. nov., Euplatypus vexans (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov.; Megaplatypus asperatus (Schedl, 1976) comb. nov., Megaplatypus carinifer (Schedl, 1970), Megaplatypus durus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov., Megaplatypus eversus (Wood, 1971) comb. nov., Megaplatypus gagates (Schedl, 1976) comb. nov., Megaplatypus irrepertus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov., Megaplatypus lineaticornis (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov., Megaplatypus paramonovi (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov., Megaplatypus schedli (Wood, 1966) comb. nov., Megaplatypus vafer (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov.; Teloplatypus caligatus (Schedl, 1972) comb. nov. Costaroplatus bidens (Schedl, 1970) comb. nov. and Costaroplatus darlingtoni (Reichardt, 1965) comb. nov. are transferred from Megaplatypus Wood, 1993. Costaroplatus vonfaberi (Reichardt, 1962) comb. nov. is transferred from Platyphysus Wood, 1993. Epiplatypus striatus (Chapuis, 1865) comb. nov., Megaplatypus contextus (Schedl, 1963) comb. nov., Megaplatypus decorus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov. and Megaplatypus dignatus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov. are removed from Euplatypus Wood, 1993. Epiplatypus ornatus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov. is transferred from Teloplatypus Wood, 1993. Euplatypus jamaicensis Bright, 1972 comb. nov., Megaplatypus discolor (Blandford, 1896) comb. nov., Teloplatypus brasiliensis (Nunberg, 1959) comb. nov., Teloplatypus nudus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov. and Teloplatypus pernudus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov. are transferred from Epiplatypus Wood, 1993. Costaroplatus ornatus (Schedl, 1936) comb. nov., is transferred from Cenocephalus Chapuis, 1865. Megaplatypus acutidens (Blandford, 1895) comb. nov. and Megaplatypus despectus (Schedl, 1971) comb. nov. are transferred from Tesserocerus Saunders, 1837. New synonymies are proposed as follows: Cenocephalus rugicollis Schedl, 1952 (= Cenocephalus epistomalis Wood, 1966 syn. nov.); Tesserocerus forcipatus Schedl, 1972 (= Platypus aplanatus Schedl, 1976 syn. nov.); Tesserocerus retusus Guérin-Méneville, 1838 (= Tesserocerus guerini ssp. montanus Schedl, 1960 syn. nov.); Tesserocerus simulatus Schedl, 1936 (= Platypus bilobus Schedl, 1961 syn. nov.); Tesserocerus spinax Blandford, 1896 (= Tesserocephalus forficula Schedl, 1936 syn. nov.); Costaroplatus carinulatus (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus umbrosus Schedl, 1936 syn. nov.); Costaroplatus shenefelti Nunberg (1963) (= Platypus abditulus Wood, 1966 syn. nov.); Costaroplatus vonfaberi (Reichardt, 1962) (= Platypus convexus Schedl, 1972 syn. nov.); Epiplatypus sallei (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus quadricaudatulus Schedl, 1934 syn. nov. and = Platypus filaris Wood, 1971 syn. nov.); Euplatypus longulus (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus dimidiatus Chapuis, 1865 syn. nov. = Platypus mulsanti Chapuis, 1865 syn. nov. and = Platypus pseudolongulus Schedl, 1963 syn. nov. ); Megaplatypus acutidens (Blandford, 1895) (= Tesserocerus alternantes Schedl, 1977 syn. nov.); Megaplatypus durus (Schedl, 1936) (= Platypus arcuatus Schedl, 1976 syn. nov.); Megaplatypus fuscus (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus marginatus Chapuis, 1865 syn. nov., = Platypus granarius Schedl, 1952 syn. nov., and = Platypus obsitus Schedl, 1976 syn. nov.); Megaplatypus irrepertus (Schedl, 1936) (= Platypus sulcipennis Schedl, 1976 syn. nov.); Neotrachyostus abbreviatus (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus concavus Chapuis, 1865 syn. nov.); Teloplatypus enixus (Schedl, 1936) (= Platypus interponens Schedl, 1978 syn. nov.); Teloplatypus ratzeburgi (Chapuis, 1865) (= Platypus pallidipennis Blandford, 1896 syn. nov.). Platypus simpliciformis Wood, 1966 had been transferred by Wood (1993) to both Megaplatypus and Euplatypus by mistake; I propose keeping it in Megaplatypus. Six Neotropical species are left in the genus Platypus with the status incertae sedis: Platypus armatus Chapuis, 1865; Platypus dorsalis Schedl, 1972; Playpus quadrilobus Blandford, 1895; Platypus squamifer Schedl, 1963; Platypus subaequalispinosus Schedl, 1936; and Platypus trispinosus Chapuis, 1965. These taxonomic changes prepare the foundations for future revisionary work on the American Platypodinae.

Abstract:
Plumes can emit from stacks of power plants, refineries and so on. Plume rise depends on multiple factors including stack exit diameter, exhaust gas velocity, effluent temperature, wind speed, lapse rate etc. Increased stack height because of plume rise plays a significant part in reducing ground level concentrations of air pollutants in downwind direction. Various equations have been proposed for prediction of plume rise such as Holland (1953), Rauch (1962), Briggs (1965) etc. In the present paper a plume rise formula was derived from the Rauch (1962) and Lucas-Moore-Spurr (1963) equations. The results revealed that: 1) the derived equation calculated plume rise more accurately than the Stone and Clarke (1967), Lucas-Moore-Spurr (1963) and Csanady (1961) formulas, 2) the derived formula overestimated plume rise by a factor of approximately two and 3) the coefficient of heat emission rate played a key role in calculation of plume rise.

Abstract:
Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Piero Manzoni (1933-1963). Scritti e documenti (1956-1963) focuses principally on two paths destined to intersect: a commentary on the texts published during the artist’s lifetime and a critical anthology composed of reviews, articles and texts published in Italy; in both cases the chronological extremes are the summer of 1956 and the February of 1963. A major primary source of material is without doubt the archive of the Fondazione Piero Manzoni in Milan, in part still under-explored by researchers. Documents, letters, texts and in some cases even new works have been found in private collections and in institutional archives and libraries. This paper is principally concerned with underling the various periods of Manzoni’s early career; that is to say, when the young artist was involved in direct exchanges and experiences with the great Italian artists – who undoubtedly drew on stimuli from international culture – of the previous generations. This germinal period was also the richest in terms of manifestos and texts, with relative drafts, proofs and notes, some already known and studied and others still awaiting clarification. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of publications and exhibitions on Manzoni’s “later” years, analysing his output from around 1959-1960 through to his premature death, in substance from the period of the magazine Azimuth and the Galleria Azimut onwards, a period in which his work, projects and contacts had a European scope, delineating new forms and genealogies. Unfortunately, however, less attention has been paid to analysis of Manzoni’s early period, the formative years, his roots, his first solitary or “nuclear” or slightly “concretist” ventures that form the origins and foundations of the later European projects. The brief introductory essay primarily attempts to “list” ideas, materials, reflections and figures very frequently “new”, unpublished, forgotten or neglected. A commentary on the texts, Manzoni’s words and the thinking of his critics complete this endless study. A further twist is provided by this author’s own research; the material discovered during the past three years’ study join and intersect with documents analysed previously which have in some cases first seen the light of day in articles published in monographical works, exhibition catalogues or conference papers. The more the research into Manzoni progresses, the clearer the idea of the infinite becomes – the “infinitable” as Manzoni himself would say – in the sense that it is open-ended.

Abstract:
Between 1933 and 1963, many Quebec critics followed with interest--some sporadically, others regularly--the works and career of Alain Grandbois (1900-1975). This thesis analyzes in systematic fashion the content and the evolution of their discourse.
In addition to engaging in "dialogue" (via their reviews) with certain publishers, the critics reflected upon the problem of regionalism and universalism in Grandbois' "clear and simple" prose works, although in quite different ways with each new book. The collections of poems, on the other hand, because of their "hermetism", induced commentators to study the question of the intelligible and the unintelligible in poetry, a question closely linked to that of the meaning--or the absurdity--of existence. Moreover, these interpreters of Grandbois' works, in order to actualize them, read them into the social discourse of the time. Thus, some denounced them for reasons of dogma or of morality; others, more numerous, sought to make Grandbois' texts more "readable" by referring them to current events or phenomena, such as the Second World War, the immediate post-war period, or the "silent revolution" of the 1960s.
Products of the classical education system, Grandbois' exegetes drew their inspiration from the principal tendencies of European criticism. As well, they tended to compare Grandbois' prose works to those of French prose writers of the interwar years, and to link his poetry to that of European poets (the surrealists and those they influenced, among others), although occasional reference was made to local writers.
Over time, the critics came to construct the myth of Alain Grandbois, that "exceptional" literary and human being who acclimatized the "modern" poem to Quebec, after having roamed the world from 1925 to 1940. The history of Alain Grandbois' critical good fortune, in short, is that of a happy match between an "eminently" distinguished author and his grateful commentators, for whom he created the opportunity to say "new" things about man, art and life.

Abstract:
In 1963, only three years after its independence, Congo-Brazzaville experienced a popular movement of unprecedented scale that forced the President Fulbert Youlou to resign. While the leaders of the main trade union organisations play a decisive role in the fall of the regime, they rely above all on the experience of the former President of the Assembly, Alphonse Massamba-Débat, to manage the political transition. But that was without counting on the activism of the Brazzaville people: strengthened by their victory in August 1963, they continued to occupy the political space left vacant since the insurrection. At the local level, youth organisations, in particular, establish committees in each neighbourhood to ensure liaison between the authorities and the population, and the affirmation of these civil society actors disrupts the political arena and the balances that have prevailed since colonization. Taking advantage of a favourable balance of power, they forced the authorities in power to negotiate with them the direction of the transition and, only one year after the insurrection, forced them to set up a single party and adopt "scientific socialism" as their official doctrine. To understand the influence of youth organizations on Congolese political life between 1963 and 1968, this study aims to make a microhistory of the revolution and to analyse the political and social experiments implemented within civil society in the districts of Brazzaville that had an impact on the revolutionary and decolonization process in Congo

Abstract:
Author of Architettura del medioevo in Sardegna which won him the Premio Nazionale Olivetti in 1956, Raffaello Delogu was an art historian and Commissioner for Antiquities and Monuments in Sardinia, Abruzzo and Sicily. His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessí commenced in their youth, when Dessí was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessí was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte».

Abstract:

Abstract:
The rapid mechanisms of sensitivity regulation following light offset are distinct from the more commonly studied slower form of dark adaptation and are called early dark adaptation (EDA) (Baker, 1953, 1963; Rinalducci, 1967; Geisler, 1983). It is well established that EDA is determined by peripheral retinal mechanisms (Baker, 1973; Baker and Donovan, 1982; Geisler, 1983; Hayhoe, Benimoff, and Hood, 1987). Previous experiments from our laboratory have demonstrated significant alterations in early light adaptation as a function of age (Sturr, Kelly, Kobus and Taub, 1982; Sturr, Church, and Taub, 1985). However, EDA has not yet been investigated in the aging visual system. These early mechanisms of sensitivity regulation may be especially sensitive to age-related changes in vision which would not be revealed by more traditional measures of visual function such as visual acuity. Therefore, the current study evaluated EDA for both young and old observers.

Abstract:
Tolic, Ines. "In Quest of Modernity: Le Corbusier’s Project for the New Civic Hospital in Venice." In LC2015 - Le Corbusier, 50 years later. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/lc2015.2015.1033.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: The paper deals with Le Corbusier’s unbuilt project for Venice analyzing the meaning of the Civic Hospital within the cultural context between 1954, the year in which the new master plan started to take shape, and 1966, when an extraordinary ‘acqua alta’ put an end to city’s contemporary ambitions. In Venice’s quest for modernity, the master plan (1954-1962), the national competition for the San Giuliano district (1959), the national competition for the Hospital (1963) and the international one for the Tronchetto Island (1964-1965) represent key events in which conservatives and modernists found themselves face to face, and in relation to which Le Corbusier’s project has not yet been studied. Even though Le Corbusier’s Hospital was presented to the public opinion as a courageous and innovative project, this paper seeks to demonstrate that it was actually more in line with the conservative front because it brought back the “problem of Venice” to its insular dimension after more than a decade of attempts to solve it considering a wider regional frame. Abstract:
In dredging, the hydraulic transport of solids is one of the most important processes. Since the 50’s many researchers have tried to create a physical mathematical model in order to predict the head losses in slurry transport. One can think of the models of Durand and Condolios (1952) and Durand (1953), Worster and Denny (1955), Newitt et al. (1955), Gibert (1960), Fuhrboter (1961), Jufin and Lopatin (1966), Zandi and Govatos (1967) and Zandi (1971), Turian and Yuan (1977), Doron et al. (1987) and Doron and Barnea (1993), Wilson et al. (1992) and Matousek (1997). Some models are based on phenomenological relations and thus result in semi empirical relations, other tried to create models based on physics, like the two and three layer models. It is however the question whether slurry transport can be modeled this way at all. Observations in our laboratory show a process which is often non-stationary with respect to time and space. Different physics occur depending on the line speed, particle diameter, concentration and pipe diameter. These physics are often named flow regimes; fixed bed, shearing bed, sliding bed, heterogeneous transport and (pseudo) homogeneous transport. It is also possible that more regimes occur at the same time, like, a fixed bed in the bottom layer with heterogeneous transport in the top layer. It is the observation of the author that researchers often focus on a detail and sub-optimize their model, which results in a model that can only be applied for the parameters used for their experiments.
