ABSTRACTDrawing its information from different documents in Portuguese and French archives, this article examines the evolution of Portuguese colonial policies towards Islam, focusing on the special case of Mozambique. Such policies evolved from an attitude of neglect and open repression, prevalent in the early years of the colonial war that broke out in 1965, when Muslims were perceived as the main supporters of the anti-colonial guerrilla in northern Mozambique, to an approach that tried to isolate ‘African Muslims’ from foreign influences in order to align them with the Portuguese. The article analyses the latter strategy, assessing its successes and failures, and the contributions made by several of those who were involved.

Abstract:

Este artigo faz uma análise da evolução da participação da agropecuária no PIB dos EUA de 1960 a 2001, dando destaque à análise econométrica das principais variáveis que determinam essa participação. A tendência geral, no período de 1960 a 2001, é a diminuição da participação da agropecuária no PIB. Porém, isto não ocorre de forma contínua, pois de 1971 a 1973 essa participação aumentou. O artigo prova, econometricamente, a quebra de tendência da participação da agropecuária no PIB de 1971 a 1973 e centra sua análise no período de 1973 a 2001. Através de gráficos, observa-se grande crescimento da produção física de cereais e de carnes no período de 1970 a 2001, que se explica pelo grande crescimento da produtividade da agropecuária e dos subsídios governamentais, dado que a tendência da relação de preços recebidos/preços pagos pela agropecuária foi decrescente nesse período. Baseado em um modelo contábil que explicita as variáveis que determinam a participação da agropecuária no PIB, um modelo econométrico é definido e estimado. As principais variáveis determinando a participação da agropecuária no PIB dos EUA (em ordem decrescente de importância), no período de 1973 a 2001, são a relação de preços recebidos/preços pagos, o valor defasado dessa participação e a produtividade total dos fatores da agropecuária.

Este texto é uma reflexão sobre o entendimento de que entre 1960 e 1973 o Centro Internacional de Estudos Superiores de Comunicação para a América Latina (Ciespal) passou por um “período funcionalista”. Tendo por base pesquisa bibliográfica e documental realizada no acervo desse Centro e o estudo de obras de Émile Durkheim, Bronislaw Malinowski e Robert Merton, buscamos aproximações e distanciamentos entre as indicações de investigação presentes em materiais do Ciespal dos anos 1960 e o funcionalismo. O estudo apontou que a comunicação para o desenvolvimento trouxe propostas políticas, enquanto que a Mass Communication Research (MCR) guiou o fazer científico, e que estas não trazem, necessariamente, em suas estruturas, o pensamento funcional. This text brings a reflection about the thought that from 1960 to 1973 the International Center of Superior Communication Studies for Latin America has passed for a “functionalist period”. Based on bibliographic and documental research made on that center collection and on the study of the works by Émile Durkheim, Bronislaw Malinowski and Robert Merton, it was searched similarities and differences between the investigation indications that existed on Ciespal material on the 1960's and the functionalist doctrine. The study pointed that development communication has brought political proposals while the mass communication research (MCR) guided the scientific work, and that those two do not bring, necessarily, in their structures the functional way of thinking. Among Polychaete annelids, calcareous tubes occur in Serpulidae, Spirorbidae, Sabellidae, and Cirratulidae (Perkins, 1991; Fischer et al., 2000). The tubes of most serpulids are completely or partially cemented to the substrate. The fossil genus Rotularia has a peculiar unattached, spirally coiled tube, thus well distinguishable from the other known serpulids. Tube records of Rotularia are known from Mesozoic (Late Jurassic) (Ball, 1960; Stevens, 1967) to Early Tertiary sediments, becoming very common during the Cretaceous and Eocene (see Savazzi, 1995). It also has a global distribution (Wrigley, 1951; Ball, 1960; Keen, 1961; Regenhardt, 1961; Howell, 1962; Stevens, 1967; Chiplonkar and Tapaswi, 1973; Ware, 1975; Lommerzheim, 1979; Macellari, 1984; Jäger, 1993).

RÉSUMÉ Grâce au fichier des professionnels de la régie de l’assurance-maladie du Québec (R.A.M.Q.), nous sommes à même de mener différentes recherches sur la composition de la main-d’oeuvre médicale oeuvrant au Québec. La présente recherche s’intéresse d’avantage aux diplômés en médecine du Québec inscrits â la R.A.M.Q. au 30 mars 1980, par année et lieu d’obtention du diplôme. A cette date, 78,6 % des 10 036 médecins inscrits au fichier étaient diplômés du Ouébec : 7 003 de facultés francophones (Laval, Montréal, Sherbrooke) et 890 de la faculté de McGiIl. En ce qui concerne plus particulièrement les diplômés des cohortes de 1960 à 1973 inclusivement, la probabilité de participation à la R.A.M.Q. est de 87 % pour les facultés francophones et de 22 % pour celle de McGiIl. Toutes proportions gardées, les facultés francophones ont produit entre 1960 et 1973 six fois plus d’omnipraticiens et trois fois plus de spécialistes inscrits à la R.A.M.Q. que la faculté de médecine de McGiIl. Deux tendances importantes sont également à noter. La première c’est que le pourcentage annuel des diplômés de McGiIl s’inscrivant à la R.A.M.Q. s’améliore régulièrement depuis 20 ans. La seconde concerne la nette préférence des cohortes récentes pour l’omnipratique, et ce pour les quatre facultés de médecine.

El estudio de la mecanización agraria en las Islas Baleares se ha realizado con documentación inédita del registro de tractores entre 1946 y 1973. El período analizado se centra en la etapa de autarquía económica (1946-1960) y se presentan unos primeros resultados sobre la incorporación de tractores en una fase de incipiente modernización de la agricultura insular, que ha cambiado los sistemas de tipo tradicional por otros más industriales en los últimos cincuenta años.

Nicolas Coldstream, archaeologist of Greece and the Mediterranean in the 9th and 8th centuries bc, was born in India, educated in England, and carried out the research for his first masterpiece Greek Geometric Pottery (1968) while Macmillan Student at the British School at Athens (1957–60). In 1960 he began a long career at the University of London, culminating with the Yates Chair of Classical Archaeology at University College. Renowned as a teacher, he drew many graduate students, especially from Greece and Cyprus. As a prolific scholar, he also wrote Geometric Greece (1977), many articles, several reports on excavations including The Sanctuary of Demeter at Knossos (1973), the Knossos North Cemetery (1996) with Hector Catling, and Kythera (1972) with George Huxley, as well as the revised editions of his two fundamental monographs.O Nicolas Coldstream, αρχανολόγος της Ελλάδας και της Μεσογείου του 9ου και 8ου αιώνα π.Χ., γεννήθηκε στην Ινδία, σπούδασε στην Αγγλία και πραγματοποίησε έρευνα για την πρώτη του εξαιρετική μονογραφία Greek Geometric Pottery (1968) ως Macmillan Student της Βρετανικής Σχολής Αθηνών (1957–1960). AbstractObserved meteorological data and a high-resolution (5 km) model were used to simulate Greenland ice sheet surface melt extent and trends before the satellite era (1960–79) and during the satellite era through 2010°. The model output was compared with passive microwave satellite observations of melt extent. For 1960–2010 the average simulated melt extent was 15 ± 5%. For the period 1960–72, simulated melt extent decreased by an average of 6%, whereas 1973–2010 had an average increase of 13%, with record melt extent in 2010. The trend in simulated melt extent since 1972 indicated that the melt extent in 2010 averaged twice that in the early 1970s. The maximum and mean melt extents for 2010 were 52% (∼9.5 × 105 km2) and 28% (∼5.2 × 105 km2), respectively, due to higher-than-average winter and summer temperatures and lower-than-average winter precipitation. For 2010, the southwest Greenland melt duration was 41–60 days longer than the 1960–2010 average, while the northeast Greenland melt duration was up to 20 days shorter. From 1960 to 1972 the melting period (with a >10% melt extent) decreased by an average of 3 days a−1. After 1972, the period increased by an average of 2 days a−1, indicating an extended melting period for the ice sheet of about 70 days: 40 and 30 days in spring and autumn, respectively.

A description of the subtribe Manobiina, diagnosis and key to genera are given. A morphological analysis of the genera attributed to the subtribe is provided and discussed. A possible fossil representative of Manobiina is recorded from Late Eocene of Rovno amber. A new combination is proposed: Leptophysa trinitatis (Bryant, 1927) = Exoceras trinitatis (Bryant, 1927) comb.n. The lectotype of Liprus punctatostriatus Motschulsky, 1860 is designated.

Abstract:

The paper deals with analytical reports prepared by the experts of the RAND Corporation on the Secret War in Laos (19601973) between the Royal Laotian Army, tacit living in the United States, and the communist movement Patet Lao, which received assistance from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Initially, it was Laos, not Vietnam that was the strategic and important region of Southeast Asia in the concept of domino theory of the US policy. A vivid example is the study of Laos in the RAND Corporation, which began earlier than the study of Vietnam. Analyst reports were created on the basis of geography, demography, geology, economics, etc. The paper addresses reports on the development of the military-political situation in Laos by the experts of the corporation such as Joel Martin Halpern, Paul Langer and Joseph Zastoff. It is shown that a part of the research was carried out with the aim of developing the theory of counterinsurgency at the request of the Agency for Perspective Research under the Ministry of Defense of the USA for the development of a foreign policy strategy in the countries of the Third world. Special attention is paid to the connection of research on the situation in Laos with the analysis of the prospects of the American policy in Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Abstract:

This paper studies the Green Revolution and its input to Cameroon’s planned development agenda from 1973 to 1986. After attaining statehood, Cameroon like most African states, espoused strategies, aimed at enhancing its socio-economic developments. All these emerged from its foremost planned development policy, introduced in 1960. This policy initially laid emphasis on industrialisation, which was too costly and inert to spur socio-economic growth. Agriculture was thus reconsidered as the basis for real development in the country and the green revolution ideology was adopted to embolden this ambitious quest. Launched in 1973, the revolution did swiftly and hugely enhance Cameroon’s socio-economic development, but nevertheless faded due to obvious deficiencies and the setting in of the economic crunch in 1986. This paper argues that despite its merely ideological bearing and hasty end, the Green Revolution remained a very vital spur to Cameroon’s planned development programme and propounds perspectives for more enhancing inputs. It is built on primary and secondary data and analysed qualitatively.

The idea that economic developments can affect births is an old one, going back to Malthus' Essay on Population in the early 19th century. In more recent times, the economic analysis of fertility was resurrected by Becker (1960) and developed by Easterlin (1980), Willis (1973), Becker (1981) and others. This article reports on an application of this economic approach to the analysis of fluctuations in births in Britain during the post-war period, building on previous work by De Cooman, Ermisch and Joshi (1987).

El segundo periodo curricular comprende de 1960 a 1990, en donde autores como Lawrence Stenhouse (1991), Joshep Schwab (1969), Stephen Kemmis (1986) y César Coll (2007), entre otros, consideraban que los conocimientos, las habilidades, las actitudes y las acciones eran categorías que debían figurar en una planeación curricular. Mientras que el primer grupo estimaba que la educación se fomentaba a través de un sistema tecnológico; el segundo se propuso desarrollar una visión socio-crítica de los problemas educativos.

Abstract:

Between 1933 and 1973 the federal government funded the construction of over 1 million units of low-rent housing. Using county-level data, I find that communities with high densities of public housing had lower median family income, lower median property values, lower population density, and a higher percentage of families with low income in 1970. However, I find no negative effects of public housing in 1950 or 1960, implying that long-run negative effects only became apparent in the 1960s. The effects found in 1970 are partially due to a decline in human capital.

This paper considers the relative importance of investment and productivity in the growth of the G7 countries during the period 1960-89. Investment is the commitment of resources in the expectation of future returns to the investor. Productivity is identified with 'spillovers' of benefits that do not provide incentives for investment. The great preponderance of growth in the US and Canada is due to investment. Investment is more important than productivity for all of the G7 countries, except France, after 1973. Patterns of economic growth have converged for the G7 countries, but important differences remain.

Most current literature concerning moult control in crustaceans concludes that initiation of premoult is controlled by changes in the level of moult-inhibiting hormone (MIH) produced by the eyestalk neurosecretory organs. MIH is thought to act by repressing the secretory activity of the Y-organs, preventing increases in circulating ecdysteriod levels, necessary for moulting (see Kleinholz & Keller, 1979). This hypothesis is based upon the observation that eyestalk removal, by removing the source of MIH, leads to accelerated moulting (see Passano, 1960; Vernet-Cornubert, 1961; Sochasky, 1973, for reviews), and it survives despite many contrary reports indicating that moulting is unaffected by eyestalk removal (Sochasky, 1973). Perhaps the best known of the most contradictory data of this nature have been reported for Palaemon serratus for which Drach (1944, 1947), Panouse (1946, 1947) have shown that eyestalk removal generally accelerates moulting in this species. In contrast, Scheer & Scheer (1954) and Carlisle (1953) demonstrated no moult inhibition in this species following eyestalk removal.

Abstract:

Trends in morbidity from syphilis in Hungary between 1952 and 1996 were analysed. The incidence of syphilis/100,000 inhabitants declined rapidly owing to the public health and therapeutic measures of the early 1950s (1952: total=73.6, early infections=60.2; 1962: total=13.7, early infections=8.7). After a temporary, slight increase until 1973 the number of reported syphilis cases declined continuously between 1978 and 1989 (1989: total=0.9, early infections=0.84). In 1994 a marked increase occurred when compared with 1993 (1993: total=early: 1.4. 1994: total=2.3, early infections=2.2). Incidence trends were statistically analysed using Chi-square test and linear regression. Chi-square analysis showed that the changes in the incidence of total and early syphilis are significant ( p<0.00001) comparing the time intervals 1952–1962 with 1962–1966 and 1975–1979 with 1988–1992. The same trends were found using the linear regression test, except for the time interval of 1960–1973.

A principios de la década de 1960 se instaló en La Araucanía un exitoso movimiento cooperativo campesino que, pese a su rápido crecimiento, perdió importancia a mediados de la década de 1970. Este artículo busca explicar el declive, caracterizando a las organizaciones cooperativas e identificando los problemas que enfrentaron hasta el año 1973. La metodología se sostiene en el análisis de fuentes documentales inéditas y en literatura pertinente. A nuestro juicio, aunque las cooperativas experimentaron un fuerte impulso, no lograron convertirse en un modelo consolidado ni predominante. Más bien, como resultado de las estrategias de promoción implementadas desde los centros de poder nacional, se formó un movimiento regional dependiente y debilitado.

According to historian Antoine Prost, education in France is marked by two periods of profound reform. The first (1880-1902) occurred during the Third Republic and the second (1960-1985) was set in motion under de Gaulle. From an architectural point of view, the former gave rise to the Jules Ferry school, while the latter sought to introduce the English open-space school model into France. Taking the example of the École Saint-Merri, built in Paris between 1971 and 1973, this article examines the impact of this second reform from an architectural point of view.

Abstract:

Neste trabalho discute-se o processo de reforma e contrarreforma agrária, ocorrido no Chile entre as décadas de 1960 e 1990. Reflete-se, inicialmente, a respeito do processo de reforma agrária desenvolvido durante as presidências de Jorge Alessandri (1958-1964), Eduardo Frei (1964-1970) e Salvador Allende (1970-1973). Posteriormente, avalia-se o esforço de reversão do processo executado durante o regime liderado pelo general Augusto Pinochet entre 1973 e 1990. Entende-se estes processos como resultado da interação entre a burocracia de Estado e os diversos grupos sociais. Deste modo, analisa-se “a atuação tanto de organizações representativas dos proprietários de terra como dos movimentos campesinos.” Procuraremos perceber estes movimentos não como todos homogêneos, mas observando suas divergências internas, que levam, às vezes, a fraturas intraorganizacionais. Quando possível realiza-se a comparação do desenvolvimento da reforma e da contrarreforma, cotejando seu desenrolar no Chile central e na Região Sul, marcada pelos conflitos entre os terratenentes e as populações mapuches, na luta pela posse da terra. Deste modo, compreende-se o peso do tema indígena nesta região, que teria reflexos no contexto nacional.

AbstractPrevious studies of historical risk have used either nominal or real data to calculate risk measures for agricultural prices and income. However, the effects of using nominal and real data have not been evaluated. This study utilizes theoretical variance approximation relationships to examine variances from detrended real and nominal time series. The relationships between variances are derived for quarterly U.S. farm milk prices for 1960-72, 1973-80, and 1981-90. Contrary to common intuitive arguments, results indicate that variances of real time series can be larger than variances of nominal series. While definitive conclusions are not possible, several reasons for using nominal data in risk analysis are given.
