Abstract:
Abstract Sixty-four southwest Pacific island meteorological stations were used to develop ENSO-related austral warm season (November–April) rainfall climatologies for 1961–90. Historical data for the same station set were then examined for 1955/56, one of the strongest La Niñas of the twentieth century. The pattern for that event was typical of a well-coupled protracted La Niña, with above-normal rainfall (>150%) observed for 17 stations in the case study. Tropical cyclone tracks were also used to illustrate the proximal effects of historical storms on station rainfall. Several stations that were located along the northern edge of the tropical cyclone swarm, but south of a region of anomalously low rainfall, were selected as possible candidates having been close to the mean South Pacific convergence zone (SPCZ) location. Linear interpolations between those stations highlighted a likely SPCZ position for the 1955/56 event. The reconstructed SPCZ location indicated a position southwest of normal, consistent with many La Niñas observed during the satellite era. The 1955/56 SPCZ reconstruction compared favorably with NOAA Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) twentieth-century reanalysis (20CR) positions of maximum atmospheric water content and omega (time derivative of pressure that illustrates vertical velocity, and a proxy for convection and SPCZ location) at 500 hPa. Comparisons between Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP) warm season rainfall composite plots for several satellite era La Niñas and one well-coupled La Niña event that occurred during 2010/11 to omega at 500 hPa and maximum rainfall amounts suggest that the 1955/56 reconstruction from in situ rainfall measurements captured the SPCZ location. These findings suggest that use of the 20CR could help to identify hemispheric-scale atmospheric circulation features like the SPCZ and improve understanding of ENSO dynamics prior to the satellite era.

Abstract:
As decolonisation gathered pace in Southeast Asia, Singapore became a source of considerable concern to the Robert Menzies government. Britain's hold on its colony appeared increasingly precarious as political turbulence gripped the island. With a predominantly Chinese population, Singapore was considered susceptible to communist China's propaganda and subversion. By relying on previously classified Australian and British diplomatic documents, this article sheds light on the Australian approach to Singapore's political and constitutional development between 1955 and 1956 and, in so doing, it hopes to make a contribution to a better understanding of Australia's policies in a rapidly decolonising Southeast Asia.

Abstract:
This essay is an attempt to recreate the events of 1955–57–the “high tide” of co-operativization – in a single province of China (Jiangsu). Whereas the other articles in this Special Issue of The China Quarterly view the same events with the benefits of hindsight, as provided by documentary materials and other evidence that have become available since the end of the Mao Era, the account given here is based on contemporary reports – above all, provincial press reports. The intention is thereby not only to give a flavour of the extraordinary atmosphere that surrounded one province's response to Mao's 31 July 1955 speech, but also to convey the tensions and policy dilemmas that emerged during the second half of the year and into 1956. Even allowing for the bias of official media reports, the evidence and analysis presented here vividly highlight the complex factors – economic and social – bearing on policy making and policy implementation during 1955–56.

Abstract:
Much has been written about the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-56 and of the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr. Yet Troy Jackson's fine book offers some fresh perspectives on both Montgomery and the impact it had on King's subsequent leadership in the civil rights struggles of the 1960s. Jackson brings to his story of King and Montgomery credentials both as a professional historian and a clergyman. At the present, he is senior pastor at University Christian Church in Cincinnati. The basic theme of Becoming King is that racial and social conditions existing in Montgomery at the time of Rosa Parks's famous arrest in December 1955 played a crucial role in shaping King's social and religious philosophy of racial justice after 1960, thus helping define his leadership of the national civil rights movement until his death in 1968.

Abstract James Buchanan came to Italy in 1955 as Fulbright visiting professor until July 1956 and made his research at the library of the Bank of Italy. He visited the University of Pavia, a quite famous center for public finance studies, still directed by Benvenuto Griziotti. On that occasion I became acquainted with professor Buchanan and our longlasting friendship started soon. On his itinerary from the political economy perspective to public choice that James Buchanan did undertake, after the Italian 1955-56 visit, he has written: «After Italy I was prepared, intellectually, psychologically and emotionally to join in an entrepreneurial venture with my Virginia colleague Warren Nutter, a venture aimed at bringing renewed emphasis to ‘political economy’ in a classical sense. And from these beginnings, the more directed research spin-off into the ‘economics of politics’ initiated jointly with my colleague Gordon Tullock, now seems a natural progression»

Abstract:
AbstractFor three weeks in 1955 and 1956 the Everyman Opera Company stagedPorgy and Bessin Leningrad and Moscow. In the previous two years, the Robert Breen and Blevins Davis production of Gershwin's opera had toured Europe and Latin America, funded by the U.S. State Department. Yet when Breen negotiated a performance tour to Russia, the American government denied funding, stating, among other reasons, that a production would be “politically premature.” Surprisingly, however, the opera was performed with the Soviet Ministry of Culture paying the tour costs in full. I argue that this tour, negotiated amid the growing civil rights movement, was a non-paradigmatic example of cultural exchange at the beginning of the Cold War: an artistic product funded at different times byboththe United Statesandthe Soviet Union. Through an examination of the tour's archival holdings, interviews with surviving cast members, and the critical reception in the historically black press, this essay contributes to ongoing questions of Cold War scholarship, including discussions on race, identity, and the unpredictable nature of cultural exchange.

Abstract:
After several years of planning, the new Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM) recruited its first class, of just 56 students, and began their instruction in the fall of 1955. This event took place in a not-yet-fully-outfitted Forchheimer building, which was then the only one of what later became a cluster of AECOM buildings. Across the street was the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center (BMHC, now Jacobi Medical Center, JMC), which was the original (and, for years, only) teaching hospital of the College. The evolution of the Department of Medicine at this new College, from its early stages – with 56 medical students, a small outstanding young faculty, one science building and one teaching hospital – to a world-renowned medical research and educational institution, with over 800 medical and doctoral students, numerous post-doctoral fellows and trainees, a large outstanding faculty, four major science buildings, and six major teaching hospital affiliates, is described.

Los jeńców wojennych to rozdział niezwykle ważny w historii wielu państw, także Niemiec. Szacuje się, że ponad 11 milionów żołnierzy Wehrmachtu i Waffen-SS zostało wziętych do niewoli przez aliantów. Dopiero w latach 1955/56 ostatnie 10 000 jeńców wojennych powróciło do Niemiec i Austrii.

Abstract:
A long-term follow-up study (24 years minimum) was made of 955 individuals aged 24-44 years, who had atopic dermatitis (AD) in childhood. The material was divided into two groups; patients who in 1952-56 had been hospitalized on at least one occasion at the Department of Dermatology, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm (Group 1), and patients who in 1955-56 had been out-patients in the same department (Group 2). At the time of investigation 62% and 40% of the patients in Groups 1 and 2 respectively had ongoing dermatitis, the majority with mild skin lesions. The frequency of healing of AD and severity of persistent or recurring dermatitis were influenced by several factors. In order of relative importance, disregarding sampling errors, persistent dry/itchy skin in adult life, widespread dermatitis in childhood, associated allergic rhinitis, family history of AD, associated bronchial asthma, early age at onset, and female sex were associated with low frequency of healing and increased severity of persistent or recurring dermatitis.

Abstract:
As part of a multi-year study of top predators in Antarctica, we conducted a seabird shipbased survey on board Almirante Irizar icebreaker in the Weddell Sea to the Filchner Ice Shelf in the austral summer 2020. We carried out 10-minute counts along 1843 km during 125 hours of observation. We analyzed the species distributions and the relationships with the ice cover. We registered 15 species of which four represented more than 85% of the total abundance: Antarctic petrel Thalassoica antarctica (43.9%), snow petrel Pagodroma nivea (16.3%), Arctic tern Sterna paradisaea (15.2%) and emperor penguin Aptenodytes forsteri (10.1%). Species distribution and its relationship with ice cover were analyzed statistically. The ice cover concentration was estimated by using satellite images. We compared our results with the first ship-based bird survey conducted up to the Filchner Ice Shelf in the austral summer 1955/56 to analyze possible changes in the bird community over time. Out of 13 recorded species in the 1955/56 cruise, 11 were present in this study with similar abundance proportions. In both cruises, the bird community consisted of a group of non-numerous species associated with icefree waters and another group of very numerous species associated with high concentrations on ice cover. The similarities between the two cruises, spaced 65 years apart, suggest a temporal persistence of the bird community of the central and the southern Weddell Sea that could be explained by the dynamics of the ice cover and the presence of reproductive colonies within the study site. The current environmental warming is alarming in this bird community because more than 85% of all its individuals belong to four species strongly dependent on ice cover.

Abstract:
The central role attributed to Seán Lemass and T. K. Whitaker in the transition of the Irish economy from protectionism to a free market economy has recently been questioned. In fact, it is more likely that a set of factors and influences combined led to the eventual opening up of the Irish economy. In the same vein, this article reveals that the American authorities, at the request of William Norton, assisted Ireland in setting up the campaign to attract foreign direct investment in 1955–56, providing detailed guidance and much-needed advice to an inexperienced industrial development authority. Despite Dublin’s best endeavours, American investors did not initially rush to Ireland. This article explores some of the reasons that may have held back American investors.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The general canonical functional of linear elastostatics is associated with the names of Hu and Washizu, who published it independently in 1955. This note discusses how that functional, in a generalized four-field form, had been derived by B. M. Fraeijs de Veubeke in a 1951 technical report. This report presents five of the seven canonical functionals of elasticity. In addition to the general functional, it exhibits what is likely the first derivation of the strain-displacement dual of the Hellinger-Reissner functional. The tour of five variational principles takes only a relatively small portion of the report: 8 pages out of 56. The bulk is devoted to the use of energy methods for analysis of wing structures. The title, technology focus, and limited dissemination may account for the subsequent neglect of this original contribution to variational mechanics. [S0021-8936(00)00401-3]

Abstract:

Abstract:
Tales of Usun Apau attracted Tom Harrisson in 1932, when he led an Oxford University Exploration Club expedition. In 1951 Harrisson (Curator of Sarawak Museums 1947-1966) with the Director of Lands and Surveys and Museum staff, crossed Usun Apau from the Tinjar river to the Plieran and Murum tributaries of the Belaga river. In 1955 Harrisson encouraged a further Oxford University Exploration Club expedition to revisit Usun Apau. Mammals were collected by Tom C. Chavasse and Gaun ak Sureng. After being sorted at the Sarawak Museum, the collection was donated to the Chicago Natural History Museum (now Field Museum). Table 1 combines the list made at the Sarawak Museum and the Field Museum digital catalogue. It also charts the collectors’ progress from Long Luar, on the Plieran river, across Usun Apau to the upper Selio, a tributary of the Baram, ending at Long Akah on 2nd February 1956. Diurnal tree squirrels form the largest ecological group, most numerous being endemic subspecies of Prevost’s squirrel Callosciurus prevostii, together with seven Bornean endemic species in the genera Sundasciurus, Dremomys and Rheithrosciurus. Also in the collection are six endemic treeshrews (Scandentia) and three endemic primates. Ten carnivore species include the endemic Hose’s civet Hemigalus hosei; ungulates include the endemic Bornean yellow muntjac Muntiacus atherodes. The Usun Apau National Park has already attracted new scientific investigations. This mammal collection of 1955-56 offers a historic baseline. New technologies, including live trapping (and releasing) and photography, will add to the list of mammals.
