Abstract:
Abstract. We present 60 years of Δ14CO2 measurements from Wellington, New Zealand (41° S, 175° E). The record has been extended and fully revised. New measurements have been used to evaluate the existing record and to replace original measurements where warranted. This is the earliest direct atmospheric Δ14CO2 record and records the rise of the 14C bomb spike and the subsequent decline in Δ14CO2 as bomb 14C moved throughout the carbon cycle and increasing fossil fuel CO2 emissions further decreased atmospheric Δ14CO2. The initially large seasonal cycle in the 1960s reduces in amplitude and eventually reverses in phase, resulting in a small seasonal cycle of about 2 ‰ in the 2000s. The seasonal cycle at Wellington is dominated by the seasonality of cross-tropopause transport and differs slightly from that at Cape Grim, Australia, which is influenced by anthropogenic sources in winter. Δ14CO2 at Cape Grim and Wellington show very similar trends, with significant differences only during periods of known measurement uncertainty. In contrast, similar clean-air sites in the Northern Hemisphere show a higher and earlier bomb 14C peak, consistent with a 1.4-year interhemispheric exchange time. From the 1970s until the early 2000s, the Northern and Southern Hemisphere Δ14CO2 were quite similar, apparently due to the balance of 14C-free fossil fuel CO2 emissions in the north and 14C-depleted ocean upwelling in the south. The Southern Hemisphere sites have shown a consistent and marked elevation above the Northern Hemisphere sites since the early 2000s, which is most likely due to reduced upwelling of 14C-depleted and carbon-rich deep waters in the Southern Ocean, although an underestimate of fossil fuel CO2 emissions or changes in biospheric exchange are also possible explanations. This developing Δ14CO2 interhemispheric gradient is consistent with recent studies that indicate a reinvigorated Southern Ocean carbon sink since the mid-2000s and suggests that the upwelling of deep waters plays an important role in this change.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates interdecadal changes in the relationship between interannual variations of boreal spring sea surface temperature (SST) in the North Atlantic and surface air temperature (SAT) over the mid-to-high latitudes of Eurasia during 1948–2014. Analyses show that the connection between the spring North Atlantic tripole SST anomaly pattern and the Eurasian SAT anomalies has experienced marked interdecadal shifts around the early 1970s and mid-1990s. The connection is strong during 1954–72 and 1996–2014 but weak during 1973–91. A diagnosis indicates that interdecadal changes in the connection between the North Atlantic SST and Eurasian SAT variations are associated with changes in atmospheric circulation anomalies over Eurasia induced by the North Atlantic tripole SST anomaly pattern. Further analyses suggest that changes in atmospheric circulation anomalies over Eurasia are related to changes in the position of atmospheric heating anomalies over the North Atlantic, which may be due to the change in mean SST. Marked atmospheric heating anomalies appear over the tropical western North Atlantic during 1954–72 and 1996–2014 but over the subtropical central-eastern North Atlantic during 1973–91. Barotropic model experiments confirm that different background flows may also contribute to changes in anomalous atmospheric circulation over Eurasia.

Abstract:
Abstract Context: Thyroid dysfunction is associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, but there is limited information on pregnancy outcomes in women established on levothyroxine. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between TSH levels and pregnancy outcomes in levothyroxine-treated women in a large community-based database. Design: This was a historical cohort analysis. Patients: Individuals with a first prescription of levothyroxine from 2001 through 2009 (n = 55 501) were identified from the UK General Practice Research Database (population 5 million). Of these, we identified 7978 women of child-bearing age (18–45 y) and 1013 pregnancies in which levothyroxine had been initiated at least 6 months before conception. Main Outcome Measures: TSH, miscarriage/delivery status, and obstetric outcomes were measured. Results: Forty-six percent of levothyroxine-treated women aged 18–45 years had a TSH level greater than 2.5mU/L (recommended upper level in the first trimester). Among pregnant women who had their TSH measured in the first trimester, 62.8% had a TSH level greater than 2.5 mU/L, with 7.4% greater than 10 mU/L. Women with TSH greater than 2.5 mU/L in the first trimester had an increased risk of miscarriage compared with women with TSH 0.2–2.5 mU/L after adjusting for age, year of pregnancy, diabetes, and social class (P = .008). The risk of miscarriage was increased in women with TSH 4.51–10 mU/L [odds ratio (OR) 1.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03, 3.14)] and TSH greater than 10 mU/L (OR 3.95, 95% CI 1.87, 8.37) but not with TSH 2.51–4.5 mU/L (OR 1.09, 95% CI 0.61, 1.93). Conclusions: The majority of levothyroxine-treated women have early gestational TSH levels above the recommended targets (>2.5 mU/L) with a strong risk of miscarriage at levels exceeding 4.5 mU/L. There is an urgent need to improve the adequacy of thyroid hormone replacement in early pregnancy.

Abstract:
The mycoheterotrophic orchid genera Didymoplexiella Garay (1955: 33) and Didymoplexis Griffith (1844: 383) include seven and ca. 20 species, respectively (Averyanov 2011, Hu et al. 2014, Tsukaya et al. 2014, Suetsugu et al. 2017). Didymoplexiella is similar in both habit and floral appearance to Didymoplexis, with which it was considered congeneric by some earlier authors (Smith 1920, Holttum 1953). However, modern taxonomists generally agreed that Didymoplexiella species can be distinguished from Didymoplexis species by the presence of a pair of long recurved stelidia on the tip of the column and the absence of a distinct column foot (Garay 1954, Seidenfaden 1978, Seidenfaden & Wood 1992, Su 2000, Comber 2001, Jin et al. 2004, Pridgeon et al. 2005, Tsukaya et al. 2005, 2014, Chen et al. 2009, Rojchana-Umpawan et al. 2014, Yokota et al. 2016).

Abstract:
Water level, as a key indicator for the floodplain area, has been largely affected by the interplay of climate variability and human activities during the past few decades. Due to a nonlinear dependence of water level changes on these factors, a nonlinear model is needed to more realistically estimate their relative contribution. In this study, the attribution analysis of long-term water level changes was performed by incorporating multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network. We took the Taihu Plain in China as a case study where water level series (1954–2014) were divided into baseline (1954–1987) and evaluation (1988–2014) periods based on abrupt change detection. The results indicate that climate variables are the dominant driver for annual and seasonal water level changes during the evaluation period, with the best performance of the MLP model having precipitation, evaporation, and tide level as inputs. In the evaluation period, the contribution of human activities to water level changes in the 2000s is higher than that in the 1990s, which indicates that human activities, including the rapid urbanization, are playing an important role in recent years. The influence of human activities, especially engineering operations, on water level changes in the 2000s is more evident during the dry season (March-April-May (MAM) and December-January-February (DJF)).

JI, CHUN-FENG, and LI-BING ZHANG. "Lectotypification of 11 names of Eurya (Pentaphylacaceae) for the Flora of China." Phytotaxa 269, no. 1 (July 29, 2016): 61. http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.269.1.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Eurya Thunberg (1783: 67) is a genus of Pentaphylacaceae and it contains about 130 species distributed widely in tropical and subtropical Asia and the Pacific Islands; 83 species (63 endemic) are known from China (Ming & Bartholomew 2007). The genus was assigned to Theaceae in FRPS (Ling, 1966), while molecular studies (e.g., Tsou & Vijayan, 2016) placed it in Pentaphylacaceae and resolved it as a monophyletic group which is recognized here. Notably, paraphyletic groups are sometimes advocated by some authors (e.g., Brummitt, 2014; Ehrendorfer & Barfuss, 2014; George, 2014; Hörandl, 2014; Stuessy & Hörandl, 2014; Stuessy et al., 2014). Species of Eurya often have unisexual flowers. In an effort to update the online version of Flora of China (www.efloras.org/flora_page.aspx?flora_id=2), we found that two gatherings were designated as types for each of 11 names of Eurya published in a same article by Chang (1954). Here we lectotypify these 11 names by choosing one of the two gatherings designated as the lectotype of each name so that the application of these names can be stabilized.

Abstract:
This article examines recent and current controversy over the Civic Administration Building (1954- 1966) in Auckland, New Zealand. Unoccupied since the end of 2014, the building’s future is uncertain. Its heritage value is widely recognized by heritage professionals and commentators. Yet Auckland Council, the building’s owner and former occupier, does not recognize its significance and has not scheduled it as a heritage building on its district plan. To the contrary, it has floated the possibility of demolishing it. This article considers the building’s history, significance and possible futures.

Hill, Nathan W. "A refutation of Song’s (2014) explanation of the ‘stop coda problem’ in Old Chinese." International Journal of Chinese Linguistics 3, no. 2 (November 28, 2016): 270–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/ijchl.3.2.04hil.

Full text
Abstract:
Song (2014) draws renewed attention to the problem of groups of Chinese words in which the character used to write one of the words has a stop final reading in Middle Chinese but the character used to write another of the words has an open syllable reading in Middle Chinese, although the two seem to have a shared a rime in Old Chinese. She offers a new solution employing the reconstruction of voiced and voiceless stop finals in the shared ancestor of Chinese and Tibetan. Every step in Song’s reasoning is faulty and nearly every claim she makes about Tibetan is false. Haudricourt long ago solved the ‘stop coda problem’ (1954).
