Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The earthquake catalog for the Himalaya and the northeast India regions (latitude 20°N to 38°N and longitude 75°E to 100°E, comprising of portions of the Himalaya and Arakan Yoma fold belt) for the period 1897 to May 1995 shows that there have been 14 major earthquakes (M ≧ 7.5) during the period 1897 to 1952 and no major earthquakes after 1952. To investigate the possibility that this quiescence is an artifact of nonuniform magnitude scales over the period of study, we examined three global catalogs and found that there is indeed an absence of major earthquakes after 1952.

Abstract:
Objective information was obtained from 89 textbooks in the psychology of learning published from 1952 through 1995 to answer questions about their coverage of classical conditioning. We found (a) that classical conditioning consistently received less coverage than instrumental and operant conditioning, (b) that the distinction of classical and instrumental conditioning has become established as a textbook-construction device, (c) that use of the classical-instrumental distinction by textbook authors has “hardened” after a period of “fluidity” in the 1970s, (d) that the currency of references in the basic classical (as well as instrumental) conditioning chapters diminished from 1952 to 1995. Findings are discussed in regard to the possibility that, as a class, and in comparison to other textbooks, the textbooks of the psychology of learning fall short of fulfilling some of their recognized roles.

Abstract:
During the course of revision of the genus Neolitsea (Bentham 1880: 161) Merrill (1906: 56), nom. cons. for the “Flora of India Project” currently under preparation in Botanical Survey of India, the author came across the name Laurus cassia Linnaeus (1753: 369) used by Kostermans (1952: 85, 1995: 164) as Neolitsea cassia (Linnaeus) Kostermans (1952: 85) and eventually followed in the Indian Floras (Mohanan & Henry 1994, Londhe 2001, Chakrabarty et al. 2010, Pal 2013). However, reference to literature reveals that another name based on the basionym Laurus cassia is also in use, viz., Cinnamomum cassia (L.) D. Don (1825: 67), treated as an accepted name, e.g., in Flora of China (Li et al., 2008).

Abstract:
A single large specimen of carcineretid crab from the Cretaceous Puerto Romero unit of Colombia constitutes the basis for a new species, Ophthalmoplax triambonatus. A re-diagnosis of the Carcineretidae results in the assignment of five genera to the family: Carcineretes Withers, 1922; Branchiocarcinus Vega, Feldmann, and Sour-Tovar, 1995; Mascaranada Vega and Feldmann, 1991; Ophthalmoplax Rathbun, 1935; and Woodbinax Stenzel, 1952. The cross-sectional profile of O. triambonatus suggests that it was a back-burrower, rather than an active swimmer.

Abstract:
The current study endeavors to explore the effects of oscillations in the exchange rate on the household aggregate consumption of developed, emerging, and developing economies, employing the panel data from 1995 to 2017. To select an appropriate panel data estimation technique, we apply Brush-Pagan & Hausman Tests for each set of chosen economies. Further, our study deduces that, in the case of developed economies, the oscillations in the exchange rate, significantly, affect the domestic consumption, supporting Alexander’s (1952) conjecture. However, in the case of emerging and developing economies, aggregate consumption does not respond to the exchange rate volatility.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Barsine Walker, 1854 is one of the largest quadrifid Erebidae genera within subtribe Nudariina (Erebidae, Arctiinae, Lithosiini). It was established for its type species Barsine defecta Walker, 1854 (by subsequent designation, Kirby (1892)) from Nepal. The genus has in the past been treated as a synonym or subgenus of Miltochrista Hübner, [1819] (Hampson 1900; Strand 1917; Reich 1937; Daniel 1951; 1952; 1955; Inoue 1980; Holloway 1982; Fang 1991; 2000; Černý 1995). In 2001, J.D. Holloway revived Barsine as a distinct genus. The genus is widely distributed in eastern and southeastern Palaearctic and Oriental tropics and more than a hundred of valid species and subspecies were worked on by Fang (2000), Holloway (2001), Kaleka (2003), Černý & Pinratana (2009), Černý (1995, 2016), Bucsek (2012, 2014), Dubatolov et al. Marina Núñez del Prado (1908-1995), escultora boliviana, iniciou seus estudos na Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Paz, na qual se tornou a primeira professora, em 1930.

Abstract The Ksour mountains (northwest Algeria) belong to the western part of the Saharan Atlas. They are located between the High Plateau to the north, the South Atlas Front to the south and the Moroccan High Atlas to the west (fig. 1a). During the last decades, the Ksour mountains were the focus of several studies, mainly based on sedimentary analyses [Cornet, 1952; Bassoulet, 1973; Baiche, 1975; Ameur, 1978; Ait Ouali, 1991; Mekahli, 1995; Elmi et al., 1998]. These studies indicate that the Ksour mountains correspond to an old asymmetric rift, trending NE-SW, which underwent extension during the Triassic and Liassic [Ait Ouali, 1991; Frizon de Lamotte et al., 2000]. In order to precise the timing of the rifting processes we have analysed subsurface data (seismic lines and borehole data) from the Sonatrach Company.

The objective of this study was to estimate variability and heritability of yellow spot disease characters of 12 sugarcane genotypes. The experiment was conducted on sugarcane field in PT Gunung Madu Plantations (PT GMP), Gunung Sugih Central Lampung, from January to May 2009. The treatments consisted of 12 F1 sugarcane genotypes resulted from the previous crossing of several existed varieties done by PT GMP research and development. The variability was estimated using the method from Anderson and Bancroft (1952) and the heritability was estimated based on the method from Allard (1995). The results showed that the severity of sugarcane yellow spot disease in the PT GMP Lampung showed high variability but low heritability (0.21). Out of 12 tested sugarcane genotypes, G12 has the highest resistance showed by the lowest disease severity.

Abstract:

Foss, Nicolai J. "The “Alternative” Theories of Knight and Coase, and the Modern Theory of the Firm." Journal of the History of Economic Thought 18, no. 1 (1996): 76–95. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1053837200002960.

Abstract:
In his contribution to the 1987 conference that celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Ronald Coase's “The Nature of the Firm” (1937), Harold Demsetz noted that from the birth of modern economics to 1970, “only two works seem to have been written about the theory of the firm that have altered the perspectives of the profession: Knight's Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (1921) and Coase's ‘The Nature of the Firm’” (Demsetz 1993, in Williamson and Winter 1993, p. 159). It is easy to feel uncomfortable with this observation. First, Coase's article was ignored for decades. Second, Knight's book did not receive much attention because of its theory of economic organization, but because of its statement of the theory of perfect competition (Stigler 1957; Machovec 1995), its distinction between risk and uncertainty, and its theory of profits (see, e.g., Boulding 1942 and Papandreou 1952).'

Abstract:

Abstract:
Barsine Walker, 1854 is a large genus of lichen-moths (family Erebidae, subfamily Arctiinae, tribe Lithosiini) including about a hundred of described species and widely distributed in Oriental tropics. A number of species is also known from the Russian Far East, Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan. The genus long time was treated as a synonym or a subgenus of Miltochrista Hübner, [1819] (Hampson 1900; Strand 1917; Reich 1937; Daniel 1951; 1952; 1955; Inoue 1980; Holloway 1982; Fang 1991; 2000; Černý 1995), and was revived by Holloway (2001). Many new species of the genus were described during last two decades (Fang 2000; Holloway 2001; Kaleka 2003; Černý & Pinratana 2009; Bucsek 2012; 2014; Dubatolov et al. 2012; Dubatolov & Bucsek 2013; Wu et al. 2013). The genus is under revision by authors of the present paper. During studies of Lithosiini materials collected in Vietnam, an undescribed Barsine species was found. The species is described below.

Abstract:
Abstract Representations of the devastation of nuclear annihilation are undoubtedly confrontational, yet crucial to understanding the ongoing trauma and impact of atomic warfare. In examining how survivors “translate into words an extraordinarily painful landscape” (Tōge 1952), this paper explores the abject imagery utilized by hibakusha poets in order to express the violent horrors of the A-bomb. It focuses on how explicitly grotesque images function to give shape to events regarded as ineffable, and to make potently real the experiences of those whose identities were defined by shame and revulsion. Drawing upon Kristevan notions of abjection, and the poetry of hibakusha such as Kurihara Sadako, Tōge Sankichi, Kawamura Sachiko, and Shōda Shinoe, it contends that by seeking to graphically confront that which is ineffable, hibakusha poets are able to contest the liminal spaces to which their bodies and experiences have been relegated; indeed, by “reopening the grave” (Gotō, qtd. in Treat 1995, 29), survivor poets refuse silence, and give form and shape to trauma.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The influential work of Markowitz (1952, 1959) provides foundation to modern investment philosophy. Investors can reap the potential benefit of portfolio diversification only if the involved asset classes in investment basket are not perfectly correlated. Objective of this study is to empirically investigate the cointegration among equity market of Pakistan and its major trading partners (China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, UK and USA). Sample period of study starts from 2004 to 2015, on weekly basis. Bivariate cointegration (Johansen, 1991, 1995) analysis reveals that equity market of Pakistan has no long term relationship with any of the equity markets of its major trading partners. Therefore, we recommend to potential investors, portfolio managers, and policy makers that prospective benefit of portfolio diversification can be achieved by investing in the equity markets of major trading partners of Pakistan. Further, they should be vigilant regarding the co-movement among equity markets during portfolio management decisions.

Abstract:
Seven outbreaks of the gypsy moth in Serbia for the last seven decades were researched in relation to the solar activity cycles and the solar flux at 2.8 GHz. Based on data analysis, three types of outbreaks were selected. A–type includes the second half of the solar cycle. This type of the outbreak doesn’t get into the next cycle (the values of the solar flux at 2.8 GHz decrease in the final phases). Besides the final years of the solar cycle, B–type also includes the initial years of the next cycle. C–type appears in the beginning of the solar activity cycle. At B-type and C-type the interruption of the outbreak occurs while the solar flux at 2.8 GHz value is increasing. The outbreaks of A-type were: 1970–1976 and 2004–2007; B-type: 1952–1956, 1962–1966, 1984–1987 and 1995–1998; C-type: 2009–2014. The obtained results suggest that the gypsy moth outbreaks are caused by corresponding range of energy coming from the Sun.

Abstract:
Reaction–diffusion systems were first proposed by mathematician and computing forerunner Alan Turing in 1952. Originally intended as an explanation of plant phyllotaxis (the structure and arrangement of leaves in plants), reaction–diffusion now forms the basis of an area in biology which is as important as DNA research in the field of biological morphogenesis (Kauffman 1993). Reaction–diffusion systems were successfully utilised within the fields of computer animation and computer graphics to generate visually naturalistic patterning and textures such as animal furs (Turk 1991). More recently, reaction–diffusion systems have been applied to methods of half-tone printing, fingerprint enhancement, and have been proposed for use in sound synthesis (Sherstinsky 1994). The recent publication The Algorithmic Beauty of Seashells (Meinhardt 1995) uses various reaction–diffusion equations to explain patterned pigmentation markings on seashells. This article details an example of the application of reaction–diffusion systems to algorithmic composition within the field of computer music. The patterned data produced by reaction–diffusion systems is used to create a naturalistic soundscape in the piece cicada.

Abstract:
In 1952, for the wave equation,Protter formulated some boundary value problems (BVPs), which are multidimensional analogues of Darboux problems on the plane. He studied these problems in a3D domainΩ0,bounded by two characteristic conesΣ1andΣ2,0and a plane regionΣ0. What is the situation around these BVPs now after 50 years? It is well known that, for the infinite number of smooth functions in the right-hand side of the equation, these problems do not have classical solutions. Popivanov and Schneider (1995) discovered the reason of this fact for the cases of Dirichlet's or Neumann's conditions onΣ0. In the present paper, we consider the case of third BVP onΣ0and obtain the existence of many singular solutions for the wave equation. Especially, for Protter's problems inℝ3, it is shown here that for anyn∈ℕthere exists aCn(Ω¯0)- right-hand side function, for which the corresponding unique generalized solution belongs toCn(Ω¯0\O),but has a strong power-type singularity of ordernat the pointO. This singularity is isolated only at the vertexOof the characteristic coneΣ2,0and does not propagate along the cone.
