Oude Nijhuis, Dennie. Religion, Class, and the Postwar Development of the Dutch Welfare State. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462986411.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines how the Netherlands managed to create and maintain one of the world’s most generous and inclusive welfare systems despite having been dominated by Christian-democratic or ŸconservativeŒ, rather than socialist dominated governments, for most of the post-war period. It emphasizes that such systems have strong consequences for the distribution of income and risk among different segments of society and argues that they could consequently only emerge in countries where middle class groups were unable to utilize their key electoral and strong labor market position to mobilize against the adverse consequences of redistribution for them. By illustrating their key role in the coming about of solidaristic welfare reform in the Netherlands, the book also offers a novel view of the roles of Christian-democracy and the labor union movement in the development of modern welfare states. By highlighting how welfare reform contributed to the employment miracle of the 1990s, the book sheds new light on how countries are able to combine high levels of welfare generosity and solidarity with successful macro-economic performance.

Nencioni, Francesca, ed. A Giuseppe Dessí. Lettere editoriali e altra corrispondenza. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-156-0.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime.

Madar, Vered. Where is Paradise? Place and Time in the Memoirs of Women from Yemen. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190912628.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines how time and place are shaped in memoirs written by women from Yemen. More specifically, it considers the ways in which the women depict their birthplace and the transition from Yemen to Israel, and how their narratives are influenced by the larger narrative of the Yemenite Jewish community. The focus is on books published in the last thirty years by Yemeni-born women who immigrated to Israel in the 1940s and 1950s. The chapter shows that the Yemenite women’s memoirs are an illustration of the so-called biblical chronotope; they often portray Yemen as a garden of Eden and recast Jews of Yemen as biblical Jews. It also discusses the nostalgia applied by memoirists who cast Yemen as a biblical paradise, describing it as subversive nostalgia. Finally, it argues that the memoirs constitute a range of views, motivations, and forces that operate in the field of communal memory.

Shadle, Matthew A. Liberation Theology in Latin America. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190660130.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the emergence of liberation theology in Latin America. It offers three cases studies illustrating the economic and political turmoil in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s: Chile, Brazil, and El Salvador. The chapter then turns to the theology of two prominent liberation theologians, Gustavo Gutiérrez and Ignacio Ellacuría. Gutiérrez proposes that God calls us to make a preferential option for the poor, and to work for integral liberation in history. Similarly, Ellacuría explains that God offers his salvation in history, and the church is called to realize the Reign of God in the midst of historical reality, siding with the “crucified people” with whom Jesus identifies.

Nanney, Lisa. John Dos Passos and Cinema. Liverpool University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781942954873.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
John Dos Passos & Cinema, the first study to use the novelist’s little-known writing for the screen to assess the trajectory of his prolific career, explores both how film aesthetics shaped his revolutionary modernist narratives and how he later reshaped them directly into film form. The book features previously unpublished manuscripts and correspondence illustrating case studies of his screen writing during the 1930s for Hollywood feature films and in an innovative independent treatment; it examines the complexities of his role in the 1937 political documentary The Spanish Earth; and it explores the unproduced screen treatment of his attempts from the 1940s on to adapt his epic trilogy U.S.A. directly for the screen and to realign its leftist politics toward the anti-Communist conservatism reflected in his work and activism of that period. John Dos Passos & Cinema thus provides a new context for and reading of his modernist literary innovations and his conservative political reorientation in the 1930s that redefined his literary career.

Collini, Stefan. Literary History as Cultural History. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198800170.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter begins with the observation that a number of literary critics in this period express the hope that a new form of ‘cultural history’ would provide the basis for an evaluative assessment of the direction of social change. They look to those trained as critics, not to historians, for such an approach, one that tries to identify the ‘quality of living’ in evidence in various periods. The chapter shows how such work played an important part in a wider public’s understanding of history in the years between the 1940s and the 1970s, with the Pelican Guide to English Literature providing a notable illustration. The chapter suggests that the reception of Williams’s unconventional book, The Long Revolution, in 1961 can be seen to mark the end of the style of work considered in the previous chapters.

Thomson, C. Claire. Somethin’ about Scandinavia: Danish Shorts on the Post-war International Scene. Edinburgh University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474424134.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Building on the picture of post-war Anglo-Danish documentary collaboration established in the previous chapter, this chapter examines three cases of international collaboration in which Dansk Kulturfilm and Ministeriernes Filmudvalg were involved in the late 1940s and 1950s. They Guide You Across (Ingolf Boisen, 1949) was commissioned to showcase Scandinavian cooperation in the realm of aviation (SAS) and was adopted by the newly-established United Nations Film Board. The complexities of this film’s production, funding and distribution are illustrative of the activities of the UN Film Board in its first years of operation. The second case study considers Alle mine Skibe (All My Ships, Theodor Christensen, 1951) as an example of a film commissioned and funded under the auspices of the Marshall Plan. This US initiative sponsored informational films across Europe, emphasising national solutions to post-war reconstruction. The third case study, Bent Barfod’s animated film Noget om Norden (Somethin’ about Scandinavia, 1956) explains Nordic cooperation for an international audience, but ironically exposed some gaps in inter-Nordic collaboration in the realm of film.
