Abstract:
In the period from 1948 to 1970 urban housing architecture in Yugoslavia had a distinctly experimental character as it strived intensively towards research and establishment of new architectural patterns and values that would mark the period of economic growth of the country. In conditions of mass housing construction, initiated by the devastated urban housing fund after the Second World War, significant influx of population to towns and the state directed its socialist aspirations at alloting every family acceptable living space. The period of the so-called ?directed housing construction?, whose imperative was to establish the limits of existential minimum in collective housing, maximal space ?packing? and optimal functionality of flats, at the same time represents the most significant period in the development of housing architecture in Yugoslavia. The architects focused their interests in housing in mainly three directions: a) the creation and application of new prefabrication systems, b) innovative application of modernistic patterns in aestheticization of architecture and c) experimenting with space units which will enable a higher level of privacy in high-density housing conditions. The first direction of research emerged in the context of post-war housing construction of a wide scope, which encouraged the advance of technological research in areas of prefabrication and practical application of achieved results on the whole territory of Yugoslavia. The second direction dealt with architectural planning which was strictly subordinated to social and ideological sphere with domineering socialist monumentalism and artistic and sculptural approach to architecture. The third was related to experimental tendency with new urban housing patterns which aimed to search and find more pragmatic, humane solutions within mass high-density housing constructions which were the first to utilize and show examples of ?double-tract? buildings. These were primarily realized in Serbia, as continuation of tendencies first expressed in activities of ?Belgrade School of Housing?.

Abstract:

Dack, John. "The relationship between electro-acoustic music and instrumental/vocal composition in Europe in the period 1948-1970." Thesis, Middlesex University, 1989. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/6604/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study seeks to establish how theories and concepts derived from electro-acoustic practice can inform musicians about the'nature of instrumental thought. Instrumental/vocal musical languages are particular representations of a wide framework of fundamental musical laws. The most successful expression of these laws is through concepts of electro-acoustic music. As a result many points of contact between hitherto unconnected areas of music are revealed. Three principal'subJect-areas are investigated: 1) The'development of Pierre Schaeffer's musical researches: The researches under consideration are those conducted from 1948 up to-the publication of the revised edition or the “Traite des Objets Musicaux" in 1977. The importance of new musical-concepts and Schaeffer's Programme de la Recherche Musicale are discussed. There has been no-extensive examination of these in English. Consequently, neither Schaeffer's position, nor French electro-acoustic music's role in the development ofcontemporary music has been efficiently assessed. 2) The Cologne studio's development during the period 1953-70: Particular emphasis is given to a discussion'of the studio's relationship with the evolution of serial thought. This relationship is identified as the main stimulus for many of the studio's musical concepts in addition'to its preoccupation with electronic sound generation. Furthermore, the conflict between Paris and Cologne regarding musical-languages is examined and the theory or eventual convergence of views is contested. 3) The, nature of Schaefferian music theory: The concepts of valeur/caractere, permanence/variation and Schaeffer's concept of the "instrument" are discussed. It is proposed that Schaefferian concepts offer & significant methodology for the study of contemporary music. They assist, therefore our understanding not just of electro-acoustic music but contemporary music in general.

The objective of this thesis is to study the transition from a conservative Catholicism to a renewed Catholicism consolidated during the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). The transition process originated from the historical necessity to establish a dialogue between the Church and the modern world, from which the Church had distanced itself in the nineteenth century. Although Vatican II consolidated doctrinal and pastoral reforms, these were already being introduced since the beginning of the fifties. This study is based on the concept of self comprehension of the Church. This determines which mission the Church has to prioritize in certain historical contexts. The analysis of original documents written by members of the clergy and laypeople revealed the conflicts, contradictions and impasses inherent to the transition process that occurred in the dioceses of Botucatu and Bauru, situated in the north-western part of the State of São Paulo, during the period 1948-1970. The analysis of the documents revealed four different self comprehensions of the Church during the period. These succeeded each other or had a precarious coexistence and at times were openly in conflict with each other. The contradictions revealed by these conflicts made the full implementation of the program as designed by the Second Vatican Council difficultt

Paris, EHESS, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EHES0107.

Full text
Abstract:
Cybernetics, in the sense of Wiener, is chiefly an interdisciplinary practice for the modeling of feedback phenomena in biological, social or cognitive systems. We study the reception of cybernetics in the context of postwar France, which is not very favorable to the emergence of such practices. Our analysis of the circulation of the feedback concept in molecular biology, economics and structuralism shows a major di5crepancy between discourse and practice: almost everybody talks about cybernetics, but almost nobody is involved in actual model-building This discrepancy is not accounted for by approaches such as cultural studies of science, which assimilate the transfer of model to metaphors or lexical borrowings and have accordingly studied the influence of cybernetic on several disciplines. We propose another framework with an essay about the technical dimension of model-building. We define the concept of "artefactual induction” to refer to the way machines can suggest rational schemes to the scientific imagination. We show that technological concept s and topics can be relevant to account for modelling practices. Analogical reasoning, distinguished from metaphor, is defined as a transfer of cognitive instruments (concepts or models) that have to be adapted and specified. This feature of technical bridging, supplied by a specific mode of invention, contributes to challenge the opinions that science evolves only toward specialization, and that model-building is merely a practice of solving predefined problems. We suggest a few sociological properties of this transversal regime of model-building

Abstract:
Between 1997 and 2000, the Palestinian territories saw a fragile state building process. The outbreak of the Intifada al-Aqsa brought it to a brutal end. During this period of time, the Palestinian Authority was closely involved in the organisation of the Muslim pilgrimages of Nabî Mûsâ and Nabî Sâlih. During these two religious festivals, worshippers create intimate ties with the prophets and with God. They are also occasions for national glorification. In a context where the cult of the saints is commonly condemned by official Islam, the tradition to perform pilgrimage on prophets’ tombs was reinterpreted and reinvented. According to a recent myth, which emerged in the 1920s, Salâh Al-Dîn, the victor of the Crusaders in 1187, decided to create the mawsim-s. By the means of this heroic figure, the pilgrimage becomes a patriotic act. However, the sanctuaries remain devotional centres where the worshippers go to seek the saints’ comfort and assistance. The articulation between, on the one hand, political and religious objectives and, on the other hand, collective celebration and individual devotions constitutes the general problematic of this work

Abstract:
The principal objective of the Marshall Plan was to reform the European capitalist system in order to ensure the stability lacking during the inter-war years; however, the economic and technical aid that are associated with the Plan, also brought with them institutional and managerial innovations. These innovations implied a conception of economic management characterized by regulation, economic stimulation, and cooperation. How was this notion of modernization received and implemented in post-war Italy? This historical investigation focuses on three aspects of this question, using primarily the institutional archives of the IRI, the large industrial conglomerate controlled by the Italian state. The first aspect deals with the modes of state regulation of the economy coinciding with Keynesian inspired political policies. A second aspect treats the training and professional trajectories of business managers. Finally, I present a case study of the steel manufacturing sector to analyze the application of business management models based on the standardization of administrative functions and consensual management of labour relations

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how child-care policy in Britain in the early post-war period was shaped by the publication of the 1946 Curtis report, whose recommendations were substantially implemented in the 1948 Children Act. The chapter considers both the report’s position on the administrative restructuring of children’s care and its importance in articulating standards of good practice in child-care based on broad concepts from child psychology. The report’s recommendations specifically for child migration are discussed as well as the different ways in which voluntary societies involved in this work engaged with the Curtis Committee on this issue. Whilst strengthening controls over child migration to a limited extent, the subsequent 1948 Children Act introduced separate obligations for the emigration of children from the care of local authorities compared to voluntary societies, thus creating a two-tier administrative system that was to have significant consequences for many child migrants.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the wider policy context and administrative systems for child migration to Australia in the period 1948-1954. With stronger concerns about child migration being expressed by some professional and voluntary organisations in Britain, in 1949 the Home Office began a process of drafting regulations for the emigration of children from the care of voluntary societies. The chapter examines how the process of developing these regulations was delayed through a complex bureaucratic process, with a final draft of the regulations not completed until 1954. Concerns about the legal limitations of these regulations and their effective power in safeguarding child migrants once overseas contributed to a subsequent decision in the Home Office not to introduce them. This decision was also informed by an independent review of child migration to Australia by John Moss, published in 1953, which offered a broadly positive view of this work. The chapter considers why Moss—a former member of the Curtis Committee—took this view, and how broad policy standards such as the Curtis report were, in practice, interpreted and implemented in different ways.

Abstract:
The history of law indeed refers to persons handing down judgments and often offers interesting stories, such as the story of a judge working under various political regimes Dr. Pavel Korbuly (1906–1970). On May 4, 1934, Korbuly was appointed a single judge in criminal matters, after 1948 he became an instrument of justice under the communist regime and was one of the most active judges of the State Court in Bratislava. Prior to the Vienna Arbitration, he was a judge in the Czechoslovak Republic, then in Hungary, and after 1948 he was one of the judges who tried and sentenced victims of the communist regime (more than 500 people) in Slovakia. By the same communist regime, however, Korbuly was later prosecuted due to his active support of the anti-communist uprising in Hungary in 1956. Unlike others, he was one of the judges who had realized their responsibility for convicting the innocent and committed public repentance. From this perspective, his life story is unique in Central Europe as well as worldwide.

Abstract:
Romania’s position in the period 1948-1958 was directly dependent on the foreign and security policy of the Soviet Union, so that, in the first years of the Cold War, Moscow’s relations with the West were dominated by the communist ideology approach, which was faithfully copied by the elite of the Romanian party. In the first years after the Second World War, the Soviet Union’s guarantee for its own security was the sovietization of the territories that had become annexed states, thus effectively ceding the right of decision in the political, social, economic and military fields to the Soviet Union. In the first decade after World War II, Bucharest, a staunch ally of Moscow, subtly changed direction and began to build its own line of communism. Thanks to the concessions made by Khrushchev and the perseverance of the Romanian political leadership, Romania escaped the military presence and Soviet advisors. Starting from 1965, N. Ceaușescu, who continued Romania’s independence policy within the Warsaw Pact, firmly condemned Moscow’s intervention in Prague, thus laying the foundations for economic and political support from Western states. However, the reality of being incorporated into the Soviet bloc forced Romania to maintain „fraternal and friendly international relations” with the Soviet Union. The 1970 Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, as well as the 1976 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation with the Soviet Union attest that the so-called coexistence and cooperation expected at the highest diplomatic level have been fulfilled. This situation did not change even in the eighth decade of the last century, the Ceaușescu regime remained preserved in neo-Stalinism, based on the cult of personality and the model of the single absolutist leader, although Mihail Gorbachev suggested, among other things, the velvet socialist model for Romania. In accordance with the real expectations of the political leadership, the Romanian state security constantly documented the actions related to the implementation of Soviet influence and intervention. The present study presents the actions carried out by the state security at that time (Securitatea), in which Romanian citizens were involved whose only crime was that they had previously lived in Bessarabia.
