Abstract:
The Philippines in the immediate post-war years may be described as a nation in search of an identity. This preoccupation with what one journalist has dubbed ‘the question of identity’ spurred a sudden interest in the research and discussion of things Filipino: Filipino dance, theater, literature, language, music, art and cultural traditions. After four hundred and fifty years of colonial rule the Filipino intelligentsia began to wonder if indeed the western legacy of colonial rule was the annihilation of the very essence of Filipino culture. Under the aegis of American rule Filipinos were adamant about proving to their colonizers that they had been good pupils in western democratic ideals and were fit to govern themselves. From the 1920s to the early 1940s, the Filipino had become a sajonista (pro-American). The Japanese colonizers who replaced the Americans in the second world war were appalled not only at the pro-Americanism of the Filipino but at the magnitude of American influence absorbed by Filipino culture. In fact it was the Japanese who promoted the use of Tagalog and the ‘revival’ and appreciation of Filipino cultural traditions as part of the policy of ‘Asia for the Asians’. Once independence was achieved at last in 1946, the focus shifted. The nagging question was no longer ‘Are we western enough to govern ourselves?’ but its opposite—‘Have we become too westernized to the point of losing ourselves?’.

Abstract:
American military bases and the protests they have elicited have had a major impact on Japanese political culture. But after the end of the formal Occupation, and outside the territory immediately affected, the cultural consequences of the U.S. military presence are much less clear. This article offers a synthetic analysis that integrates diplomatic and social history and relates the strategies of U.S. policymakers to those of anti-base activists. It shows how much the base system has changed over time and how protests have long focused on the same issues, especially sex work and sexual violence, territorial disputes, and nuclear weapons. In each case, Washington and Tokyo worked together to insulate Japanese society, which made it easier for Japanese men and women to tolerate the bases and easier for U.S. servicemen to live within them.

Abstract:
The thesis examines, on a number of different levels, the contribution and response of Northern Ireland to the Cold War. Starting in 1945 and continuing to the early years of the Troubles, it covers some of the most intense moments of the international conflict and demonstrates there is more to the history of Northern Ireland in that period than the lead up to the outbreak of communal violence. It will also reveal the impact the global tension had not only at a local level in the West, but facilitate a study of it through the prism of a divided society. The first study comprehensively to examine attitudes in Northern Ireland towards the Cold War on a comparative basis, it reveals how the various elements of Northern Irish society responded. The approach adopted by local political parties, the Belfast press, the four main churches, students and other opinion formers is analysed, breaking new ground in nuclear attack planning, anti-communism and international relations.

Full text
Abstract:
With this paper, we study the effects of atomic revolution on the french navy between 1945 and 1972. Three era can be noticed. First, from 1945 until 1953, naval officiers understood the effects of a nuclear bombing on vessels, dockyards, harbours and seamen. Then, in a second time, with the help of the Atomic Energy Committee, in spite of the European community of defense (1954) and Europrean community of atomic energy (Euratom, 1956-1957), naval headquarters and central directorate of shipbuilding tried to achieve an atomic submarine which would have used natural uranium and heavy water (Q. 244). It is a technological failure. United States refused to sell a reactor or some enriched uranium for this submarine. Then, during the first part of the Fith republic, all the project is removed. A new project (Coelacanthe) appeared, based on a intermediate range ballistic missile which a nuclear powered submarine can launch against the cities of a potential enemy. The SNLE Le Redoutable began its first strategic patrol the 29th of january 1972. On the same time, from 1957, french navy supported the nuclear tests fields in the Sahara desert and polynesian islands

Erard, Carine. Paris 11, 2003. http://www.theses.fr/2003PA112335.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this work is, through sociocultural characteristics of athletes who were at international level in athtletism between 1945 and 1972, to analyze the social dynamics of athletic elite during this very particular historic period in France called "les Trente Glorieuses" (Fourastié). For that, an interpretative reading of international athletes'life stories is implemented round eight themes : their social sphere, their school capital, their sports capital, the number, of people in the family they come from, their place in the fratrie, their particular family configurations, their geographical origins and their individual trajectories. Recurrences and divergences noticed in about a hundred biographical notes (pieced together from questionnaires and semi-directive talks) are interpreted thanks to a confrontation between objective given information and subjective formulation connected with these eight themes. This "dynamics from inside" (Balandier, 1971) identified in that way, is in its turn analyzed on looking at historical context ( "dynamics from outside"). This approach of French athletic elite in the years 1945 to 1972, unpublished in socio-historical litterature and in the methodology used, is based on the sociology by Bourdieu (Bourdieu, 1976; Davisse & Louveau, 1998; Defiance, 1979; Lahire, 1995; Pociello, 1981)

Full text
