Abstract:

Abstract:
ABSTRACT During the Second World War, the central Mediterranean island of Malta was famously besieged by the Italian navy and intensively bombed by Italian and later German air forces, from June 1940 until Allied victory in North Africa in May 1943 brought an end to the siege. It was then scheduled as a staging post to support the Allied invasion of Sicily from North Africa in July 1943 and of mainland Italy from Sicily in September. From 1941 until 1945, two Tunnelling Companies Royal Engineers, overlapping in succession, excavated underground facilities safe from aerial or naval bombardment. In 1943 and then 1944–1945, two Boring Sections Royal Engineers in succession drilled wells to enhance water supplies, initially for increased troop concentrations. Borehole site selection was guided in 1943 by the Director of the Geological Survey of Great Britain (Edward Battersby Bailey: 1881–1965) and by geologists Captain Frederick William Shotton (1906–1990) and Major Gordon Lyall Paver (1913–1988). In 1944, it was guided by geologist Captain Howard Digby Roberts (1913–1971), leading a detachment from 42nd Geological Section of the South African Engineer Corps that pioneered earth resistivity surveys on the island. Overall, these military studies generated a new but unpublished geological map of the island at 1:31,680-scale and refined knowledge of its geological structure: a much faulted but otherwise near-horizontal Oligo-Miocene sedimentary sequence. Further refinement was achieved as a consequence of the 1944–1945 drilling programme, led principally by geologist Captain Thomas Owen Morris (1904–1989) of the Royal Engineers. By 1945, this had helped to develop an improved water supply system for the island, and plans to develop groundwater abstracted from a perched upper aquifer (in the Upper Coralline Limestone and underlying Greensand formations, above a ‘Blue Clay’) as well as from the main lower aquifer, near sea level (in the Globigerina Limestone and/or underlying Lower Coralline Limestone formations).

Selected type and non-type material belonging to the genus Orthocladius van der Wulp, 1874 (Diptera: Chironomidae) sensu GOETGHEBUER (1940-1950), deposited in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), originally comprising specimens dry pinned or stored in isinglass, were mounted on microscope slides and re-examined. Other chironomids present in the RBINS collection belonging to other genera were also examined. Fifty slides were prepared and identified to species, or to generic level when the condition of the specimens did not allow species identification. The following types, representing taxa formerly considered as nomina dubia, were examined and the concerned species are stated here as valid: Georthocladius collarti (Goetghebuer, 1941) comb. nov., Georthocladius scaturiginis (Goetghebuer, 1940) comb. nov., Lapposmittia succinea (Goetghebuer, 1942) comb. nov., Orthocladius (Euorthocladius) tolleti Goetghebuer, 1944 (new subgenus placement), Orthocladius (Orthocladius) timoni Goetghebuer & Timon-David, 1939, Pseudorthocladius hockaiensis (Goetghebuer, 1933). Orthocladius (Orthocladius) mitisi Goetghebuer, 1938, previously stated as junior synonym of Orthocladius (Orthocladius) glabripennis (Goetghebuer, 1921), is reinstated as valid species. The following new synonyms are proposed: Georthocladius (Georthocladius) collarti = Parachaetocladius retezati Albu, 1972: 19, syn. nov.; Cricotopus (Paratrichocladius) rufiventris (Meigen, 1830) = Orthocladius franzi Goetghebuer, 1949, syn. nov.; Cricotopus (Paratrichocladius) skirwithensis Edwards, 1929 = Orthocladius nigritus Goetghebuer, 1938, syn. nov. = Paratrichocladius spiesi Ashe & O’Connor, 2012; Hydrobaenus distylus (Potthast, 1914) = Orthocladius antennalis Goetghebuer, 1944, syn. nov. Lectotypes of Orthocladius collarti Goetghebuer, 1941, Orthocladius antennalis Goetghebuer, 1944, Orthocladius timoni Goetghebuer & Timon-David, 1939, and Orthocladius hockaiensis Goetghebuer, 1933 are designated. Non-type material assigned to Orthocladius was also mounted on slides and identified. Although a list of the non-Orthocladius taxa is also provided, no taxonomic changes are proposed for the latter.

Abstract:
During the Nazi occupation (1941–1945), Latvia was subject to nazification. In the course of this process, the left wing elements of the Nazi ideology were actively introduced into Latvia. The process manifested itself in two ways: firstly, in the propaganda of the postulates of the Nazi ideology and, secondly, in a series of practical political activities. The main themes of the Nazi left wing propaganda were as follows: propaganda of the so-called German socialism and its achievements; criticism of the soviet socialism and the political system of the USSR; propaganda of the formation of classless society; propaganda of eradicating social injustice; singing praise to the prevalence of the workers in the social organism and introducing the left wing Nazi traditions into the occupied Latvia. However, the propaganda of the Nazi ideology in Latvia was introduced un- evenly and ambiguously. Several phases of its implementation can be singled out: the Hot Phase (1941), the Transitional Phase (1941–1942), the Pragmatic Phase (1943–1944) and the Disintegration Phase (1944–1945). The general trend was from propagating the ideas which maximally complied with the Nazi ideology towards gradual mitigation of the propaganda in order to achieve support from the local population for the occupation power and their involvement in the war. In practice, the Nazi occupation power, according to the common position of the left wing Nazi ideology, carried out the nationalisation of all the sectors of the economy of Latvia. This policy reached its peak in the autumn of 1941, when the German state took control of the great part of the Latvian enterprises. In 1942–1944, as the war developed unfavourably for Germany, re-privatisation of the property was permitted in order to achieve the support of the population and their active involvement in the war.

Abstract:
The supraspecific taxonomy of the species traditionally attributed to the flea beetle genusBlepharidaChevrolat, 1836 is discussed. A cladistic analysis, based on 30 morphological characters of traditionalBlepharidaspecies, has revealed that two genera occur in Sub-Saharan Africa:CalothecaHeyden, 1887 andBlepharidinaBechyné, 1968. The latter genus is known from Africa, and probably also Madagascar, and has two subgenera:Blepharidinas.str. andAfroblepharidasubgen. nov. Twenty-seven traditionalBlepharidaspecies are here attributed to the genusCalothecaHeyden, while eighteen species are assigned to the genusBlepharidinaBechyné. FourBlepharidinaspecies, antinorii(Chapuis, 1879),gedyei(Bryant, 1948),scripta(Weise, 1904) andsomaliensis(Bryant, 1948), belong to the new subgenusAfroblepharida. The following new synonymies are established:Eutheca conradsiWeise, 1906= Eutheca erlangeriWeise, 1907 syn. nov. =Blepharidella irregularisBryant, 1945 syn. nov.;Blepharida marginalisWeise, 1902 =Blepharida monticolaWeise, 1926 syn. nov. =Blepharida ugandaeBryant, 1944 syn. nov.;Blepharida inornataJacoby, 1895 =Blepharida semisulcataAchard, 1922 syn. nov.;Blepharidella lewiniWeise in Lewin, 1912 =Blepharidella picticollisBryant, 1945 syn. nov.;Podontia nigrotessellataBaly, 1865= Blepharidella rubrosignataBryant, 1945 syn. nov.= Blepharidella variabilisBryant, 1945 syn. nov.;Blepharida ornataBaly, 1881= Blepharida freyiBechyné, 1954 syn. nov.;Podontia reticulataBaly, 1865= Blepharida guttulaBryant, 1944 syn. nov.;Blepharida antinoriiChapuis, 1879 =Blepharida sudanicaBryant, 1944 syn. nov.;Blepharida scriptaWeise, 1904= Blepharida geminataBryant, 1944 syn. nov. Norton, Mason. "Resistance in Upper Normandy, 1940-1944." Thesis, Edge Hill University, 2017. http://repository.edgehill.ac.uk/10030/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to make an original contribution to knowledge by looking at the phenomenon of resistance in the French region of Upper Normandy between 1940 and 1944 from a perspective of ‘history from below’, by looking principally at the testimonies of former resisters, and demonstrating a political history of resistance. The introduction defines what is meant by Upper Normandy and justifies its choice as a region for this study, before analysing both the historiography and the epistemology of resistance, both locally and nationally, and then giving a justification and an analysis of the methodology used. The main body of the thesis is then divided into four chapters. Chapter one looks at resistance that was designed to revolutionise society, by looking at Communist resisters and the idea of the grand soir, as well as the sociological origins of these resisters, and how this influenced their resistance action. Chapter two looks at more gradualist forms of resistance, which were conceived to slowly prepare for an eventual liberation and the struggle against Vichyite hegemony, arguing that these resisters formed a ‘resistance aristocracy’, aiming to slowly forge a post-Vichy vision of the polis. Chapter three analyses resistance purely from a patriotic angle, and identifies three different forms of patriotism, before arguing that resistance was part of a process to ‘remasculate’ France after the defeat of 1940, and that these resisters saw their engagement as primarily being one of serving France. Chapter four looks at auxiliary resistance, or resistance actions that were designed to help people, whether they were fleeing persecution or were active resisters, aiming to show that resistance went beyond just organisations and networks, and could be about facilitating other actions rather than direct confrontation. The conclusion then argues for a new understanding of resistance, not as une organisation or even un mouvement, but as a form of la cité, or polis, engaged in creating a new form of polity. It shows that the political history of resistance is a combination of institutional politics and expression politics, and that resistance, even if not necessarily politicised, was political by its very nature.

Alary, Éric. "La ligne de démarcation (1940-1944)." Paris, Institut d'études politiques, 2001. http://www.theses.fr/2001IEPP0036.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation studies the judiciary purge of the Axis' collaborators in Greece after the country's libération in l9M. That purge took place into the context of a civil war that had started during the foreign occupation and finished in 1949, when the Special Collaborators' Courts finished working. The different stages ofjuridicisation of the question describe how the two camps of the internal conflict aligned themselves on the lines that separated the camps of the civil war. Hence, we study the purge as a component of a civil war that was at the same time internal and international. The various qualitative and quantitative aspects of the administrative purges, reveal that the the purge was an effective instrument in the hands of the successor élites. In the beginning, the the trials inaugurated the myth of a global and unanimous national resistance that permitted to the new régime to incorporate into the state apparatus a part of excollaborators, mainly inthe armed forces. The symbolic appropriation of the antifascist victory permitted to the judiciary to restore its authority as well as to prepare, by 1946, the institution of an anticommunist state of emergency. Finally, by identiffing the internal and the external ennemy, mainly close to the northern frontier of the counfry, the judiciary'purge carried out the transformation of the greek frontier into frontier of the Cold War

Abstract:
The Second World War saw British society mobilised to an unprecedented extent to meet the threat of Total War. ‘Total Defence’ was manifest in organisations such as the ARP and Home Guard. What sets the Home Guard apart was its combatant role. This thesis examines the arms provided for the Home Guard, and concludes that its combat power has been seriously underestimated. It benefitted from huge quantities of high quality smallarms purchased from the United States, which were not issued to the Regular Army, because they chambered American ammunition. What is extraordinary is that these weapons are always characterised as ancient relics, yet the oldest of them was years younger, in real and design terms, than the British Army equivalent. In 1940 Britain lacked the capacity to manufacture arms in the quantities needed to repair the losses of Dunkirk and meet the needs of the expanding armed forces. The remedy was unorthodox weaponry such as the ‘Sticky Bomb’ and the ‘Blacker Bombard’. These are always associated with the Home Guard, yet saw active service against the Africa Corps. These unconventional weapons were more capable than many modern authors suggest, but they suffer from an impenetrable ‘orthodox view’ that characterises Home Guard weapons as ancient, whimsical and inefficient. This has its origins in the Local Defence Volunteers’ disappointment when the Government failed to meet its promise to arm every volunteer; their dismay at receiving foreign equipment; the way in which the media portrayed the Home Guard; and the fact that the great threats the Home Guard existed to combat – invasion and subversion – appeared to be illusory, making the Home Guard itself seem quixotic. This study strips away that conventional narrative, and exposes a Home Guard that was well equipped for its tasks – frequently better equipped than other components of Home Defence.

Abstract:
The Rexist movement led by Léon Degrelle was the principal francophone collaborationist grouping in German-Occupied Belgium during the Second World War. In the 1930s, the Rexists had been a movement on the Catholic right of the political spectrum who advocated the replacement of the outmoded parliamentary regime by a more authoritarian New Order which would enable a return to the spiritual values of the Catholic faith. Soon after the Belgian defeat of May 1940, they emerged as enthusiastic advocates of an agreement with the apparently victorious German invaders and in January 1941 Degrelle publicly declared his support for the Nazi cause. This resulted in a marked decline in popular support for Rex but did not bring it the German recognition which he craved. Only in the summer of 1941 with the formation of a Légion Wallanie which fought with some distinction alongside the German armies on the Eastern Front was the basis created for closer links between the German authorities and Rex. Subsequently, many Rexists were appointed by the Vehrmacht administrators of Belgium to positions of public responsibility and in January 1943 Degrelle announced the abandonment of his former belief in a unitary Belgian state in favour of the absorption of the francophone Walloons into a Germanic empire. During the latter war years, the Rexists were often the target of attacks by Resistance groups and the atmosphere of fear created by these attacks together with the opportunistic efforts of Degrelle to .forge an alliance with the SS led to a progressive radicalization of the movement. By 1944, the Rexists had become a beleaguered marginal grouping who increasingly resorted to violence to counter their many enemies and in September 1944 many Rexists fled from the Allied liberators to exile in the German Reich.

AbstractThe serendipitous successes and enticing possibilities of the first year of radio astronomy at Sydney had set Joe Pawsey on a quite unexpected scientific path. He was suddenly established at the lead of a new research field in basic science, with a clear sense of scientific purpose. But just a few months before observations at Collaroy began, Pawsey had not been at all clear about what he would like to pursue in the post-war world. This chapter concerns his personal contemplation of that future, and provides context for the long trip overseas that he undertook in 1947 and 1948.

Abstract This chapter studies the wartime films of 1940s Britain. It starts with Goodbye Mr Chips (1939) and The Lion Has Wings (1939). For officials learning to use films as propaganda, Mr Chips seemed an ideal model, celebrating ‘British life and character’. The chapter then considers Love on the Dole (1941); The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943); In Which We Serve (1942); Millions Like Us (1943); The Way Ahead (1944); and The Way to the Stars (1945). It also studies I Know Where I’m Going (1945); The Wicked Lady (1945); Brief Encounter (1945); A Matter of Life and Death (1946); Great Expectations (1946); and The Third Man (1949).

Abstract:
After he was sent to a Siberian labor camp in 1941, Formakov lost contact with his family. They remained behind in Nazi-occupied Latvia, and he could not contact them by mail until Soviet forces recaptured Daugavpils and Riga in 1944. This chapter contains the letters that Formakov wrote to his family beginning in the summer of 1944 and also some poems, addressed to them, that he had composed in 1941-1943 and sent in early communications. The letters provide a detailed view of Formakov’s living conditions in Kraslag, a labor camp in Kansk in the Krasnoiarsk region. They offer information about the operations of Kraslag’s Cultural-Educational Sector, which put on film screenings, concerts, and theatrical productions in camp. They also describe a special cafeteria for inmates who exceeded production targets and Formakov’s efforts to secure adequate food for himself.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to the reflection of the fate of museum-estates during the Great Patriotic War in the prose of K.G. Paustovsky. The study is made on the material of the essays “The Guardian” (1946), “The Wind of Speed” (1954; published in 1955) and the novel «Smoke of the Fatherland» (1944, published in 1964). These works are considered in the context of the “manor topos”, one of the modifications of which is represented by the manor museum. Describing the dramatic pages of the history of museum-estates, Paustovsky often relied on real facts, for example, “Smoke of the Fatherland” and “The Wind of Speed” reflect the period of occupation of the Pushkin Reserve (1941-1944). The museum-estate in Paustovsky's prose simultaneously opposes the destructive chaos of war and is a symbol of Russian culture, for the sake of which the heroes are ready to sacrifice themselves.

Abstract:
The daily life in the Moldavian SSR orphanages during the post–war years was determined by the living conditions, the sanitary and hygienic state of the institutions, the provision of food and clothing, and the activities in which the children were involved. In the present paper, on the basis of unpublished archival documents and published documents, we elucidate the living conditions and the attitude towards children in the orphanages of the Moldavian SSR in the post–war years. Following the worsening of the social situation in the immediate post–war period in the Moldavian SSR, the number of orphans and vagrants increased. The solution of the Soviet state for this serious social problem was to expand the network of orphanages. On September 1, 1947, 21,553 children were already taken care of in 124 orphanages, a number that exceeded the possibilities of accommodation and food. The institutionalization of children was one of the solutions accepted ideologically by the Soviet Power. However, the ideological ideals did not correspond to the serious social realities in orphanages, where children lived in unsanitary conditions, also demonstrated by the numerous diseases caused by unsanitary conditions and lack of hygiene in the institutions: typhus, itching, tuberculosis. Children also suffered from malnutrition and dystrophy. The overall mortality rate among children was high.
