Abstract On October 19, 2023, we lost Anthony Violer, a longtime friend of this magazine. A brilliant historian of architecture whose deep scholarship and intellectual curiosity ranged from Ledoux to his own contemporaries, Tony was also an astute reader of art and theory, and he was always alert not only to the historical conditions of a given practice but also to its conceptual implications and political ramifications. In manifold ways Tony instructed us, inspired us, committed us, and delighted us with his theatrical imagination and subversive wit.

Abstract:
In our study, we examine the practice of land donation and other land grants that benefited the Order of Vitéz. The members of the Order of Vitéz, established in 1920, were veterans of the First and Second World War who had earned certain commendations due to their personal bravery. Membership in the order was hereditary. From the very beginning, the purpose of the order was to ensure that the interwar political system had stable support from a social stratum loyal to the government even during possible rebellions. To ensure this, the initial plan was to give all members, especially the ones with a background in agriculture, plots of land. Originally, there were only two types of such plots. Free ones, which were donated by the head of state, and the self-founded one, when a Vitéz created a plot from his own property. Later, eight more types of Vitéz plots were established: in most cases, these plots were either acquired at a discounted price, with loans paid for decades, or they could be rented cheaply. The claimants also received Vitéz plots from land holdings in the territories reannexed to Hungary between 1938 and 1941, as well as from the ones confiscated from 1939 due to the Jewish laws. Although the Order of Vitéz acquired a significant amount of territory, it could not give plots to all its members even as late as 1944.

"In-Depth Water Conformance Control: Design, Implementation and Surveillance of the First Thermally Active Polymers Treatment TAP in a Colombian Field." In SPE Improved Oil Recovery Conference. Abstract:
Abstract The Yariguí-Cantagallo is a mature oil field located in the western flank of the middle Magdalena valley basin in Colombia. Oil production started in 1941 and has been supported by water injection since 2008 with the aim of maintaining the pressure in the reservoir and increasing oil production. However, due to the channeling of the injected water, the water cut in some wells has been increasing, reaching values greater than 90%. Therefore, ECOPETROL S.A. implemented the first deep conformance treatment in Colombia through the design, execution, monitoring and evaluation of the technology in the YR-521 and YR-517 patterns for improving sweep efficiency of the waterflooding process. Brightwater® technology (also known as Thermally Active Polymer, TAP) has been used as an in-depth conformance improvement agent in reservoirs under waterflood suffering from the presence of thief zones or preferential flow channels. BrightWater® consists of expandable submicron particles injected downhole with a dispersive surfactant as a batch using injection water as a carrier. The selection of the injection patterns and treatment volume estimation was carried out through analysis of diagnostic plots and analytical pattern simulations. Treatment design and chemistry selection were based on reservoir characteristics, especially the temperature profile between the injector and offset producing wells in each pattern. Thus, laboratory tests with the representative fluids at various temperatures were carried out. Injection in the first pattern began on December 14, 2020, with a cumulative 6344 bbls of water containing TAP, at an injection rate of 700 bpd, gradually increasing the concentration from 3,500 ppm to 12,000 ppm. Once the injection was completed in this pattern and using the same surface facility, the second injection pattern was executed, on December 23, 2020. In the second pattern a cumulative of 9152 bbls of water containing TAP was injected at an injection rate of 700 bpd at concentration from 3500 ppm up to 8000 ppm. This paper summarizes the first TAP pilot implementation in Colombia and will describe the methodology and results of project QAQC monitoring and injection-production. Based on results to date, after one year monitoring (decrease in water cut up to 6%, in some wells, with consequent increase in oil recovery up to 18,642 STB), five additional treatments are planned in other injection patterns in this field between 2022 and 2023. It was validated that the deep conformance improvement technology allows blocking the preferential flow channels, reaching new areas with high oil saturation. Incremental oil production, potential increase in reserves, and reduction of OPEX due to lower water production were some of the observed benefits from this trial. Likewise, calculations show positive impacts in reducing the carbon footprint and water management.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to conduct a careful psychological investigation into the thought of one of the most important 20th century Irish writers, James Joyce (1882- 1941). The main focus of the analysis consists of some of the short stories contained in one of Joyces most famous works, Dubliners, with particular reference to Evelyne and at the same time examining some of the themes present and recurring in the Irish writers books. This work aims to demonstrate how in Joyce there is a strong interest in the realisation and psychological analysis of his complex characters present in the work as well as in Evelyne and who will be examined as expressions and fulfilments of his creativity. The study was conducted through the discipline of the Psychology of Art and Literature. Some of the themes and characteristics of the characters in the stories will be presented, in which the individual, with his inner conflicts, emotions, feelings and sensations will come to the fore, with particular attention to the central theme of the work, namely paralysis in which he sees the city and its inhabitants immersed. Paralysis and escape are the central elements of Dubliners. One will understand how the city and the characters are seen by Joyce as the centre of the historical, social and psychological paralysis that conditions the lives of its inhabitants and does not allow them to grow as human beings.

Full text
Abstract:
ABSTRACT A coupled numerical framework using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and finite difference method (FDM) has been developed to evaluate the fracturing phenomenon and fluid flow in a deformable porous medium. The key aspect of the proposed coupled model is the simulation of flow of fluid in deformable porous medium using two distinct layers to characterize the solid and fluid phase. The respective governing equations of both phases are solved simultaneously with mutual transfer of variables from one to the other. SPH being a meshless technique has an advantage over grid-based methods in modeling large deformations and fracture propagation, and is used to simulate the solid phase, whereas FDM has been utilized for studying the variation of pore pressure in the fluid phase. Rate of change of porosity, rate of change of velocity, strain rate and stress rate are calculated in the solid phase by SPH. These rates are used to calculate porosity, velocity, strain, stress and volumetric strain of all the particles at any given time step. Porosity rate and volumetric strain calculated in SPH solver are then transferred to FDM solver to calculate rate of change of pressure to find out pressure at every FDM node. This research has provided a detailed mathematical framework and process describing the reciprocal flow of information between SPH and FDM. The coupling mechanism of the proposed coupled model has been validated with two standard benchmark problem in order to establish its accuracy and versatility by comparing the numerical results with the analytical solutions. INTRODUCTION The poroelasticity theory studies the mechanical behaviour of the solid phase, or solid skeleton, and the fluid phase in the pore space of a saturated porous medium. The coupled process of fluid phase interaction within the deformable porous solid phase is crucial in many industrial processes, including oil and gas extraction, hydrofracking, coal bed methane extraction, CO2 sequestration, ground subsidence due to excessive fluid extraction, and other engineering applications. Based on the effective stress concept and an incompressible solid and fluid for a one-dimensional consolidation investigation, Terzaghi (1943) developed the mechanics of solid and fluid phase interaction in deformable porous media. By Biot (1941, 1955), Hsu and Jeng (1994) and Pastor et al. (2009), this work was expanded to three dimensions and took into account the impact of pore fluid diffusion on the kinematics and deformation of porous media. The mechanics and description of porous media are either based on mixture theory, which was developed on the concept of volume fraction provided by Morland (1972), Bowen (1980, 1982), and Muraleetharan and Wei (1999), or on averaging theory, which was developed by Whitaker (1977), Hassanizadeh and Gray (1979) and Scherer (1990). The mechanics involved are described in detail in the works of de Boer (1996), Lewis and Schrefler (1998), de Boir (2000) and Verruijt (2013).
