Skiada, Anastasia. "Exhibition in the British film business 1939-1945." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28794.

Abstract:
This thesis concentrates on the exhibition sector of the cinema industry and argues that the cinema industry was very successful during the war, despite bombing, rising costs, and wartime shortage. The success of the cinema business is understood not only via the analysis of the financial statements of the companies, but also as a business phenomenon which relates to government manipulation, and cinema goers' expectations. Given the important position played by the combines in the evolution of the cinema industry, and the lack of any available data about independently owned cinemas it concentrates on the financial performance of the combines, in order to demonstrate the success of the cinema industry. The evolution of the cinema industry during the war years is also demonstrated by the further development of industrial concentration. This happened through merger and added to the increase in the industry's profits and its further strengthening. It is argued that the success of the circuits was due to the prevailing conditions in cinema exhibition during the war: the barring system, rise of film hire, and conditional booking, due to the government's 'inertia', and most of all due to the state's policy and actions. These were directed towards the strengthening of the cinema industry, since the state used it as means of propaganda and for morale boosting purposes. The unique role played by the cinema in wartime was its social function. The cinema emerged as the main focal point of the community's social life through the organisation of events which helped the community, from charity concerts to recruiting drives. A visit to the local cinema offered a much wider experience than film consumption; it gave a feeling of security, provided a cheery and friendly atmosphere, and a sense of solidarity. This is how its patrons experienced the cinema was experienced and this thesis demonstrates how publicity and marketing helped establish its central place in the community.

Abstract:
Among the original projects of the Gendarmerie new history, this Ph. D. Dissertation brings a double reflection through World War Two and the Algeria. From the 19th Gendarmerie Legion Level, this study aims at defining the role of Gendarmes in the context of war on a colonial territory. It is organized in three chronological parts. The first part focuses on the organization, the missions and the personnel of the 19th Legion in 1939. It shows a rather successful example of the Gendarmerie model used in Algeria where it had to adapt to local specificities. This presentation of the Gendarmerie prior to the Conflict contributes to a better understanding of changes to comes. The second part studies the consequences of the 1939-1940 campaign, the armistice of June 1940 and the establishment of Vichy's regime on the Gendarmerie in Algeria. This part provides a sharp comparison with the situation in France at the same period. Though they played a role in mobilization, Gendarmes in Algeria only saw war in the distance. Only a few witnessed the collapse of France as they served in Gendarmerie provost restrained the strength of the Gendarmerie. With the new Vichy government also came a personnel purge and a deep reorganization of the force. The third part covers the November 1942-December 1945 period. First of all, it offers an analysis on how Gendarmes reacted to the Allies' landing in Northern Africa. Indeed, the operation had a double effect ont the Gendarmes' lives. On the one hand it changed the political environment in Algeria, and on the other hand it took the Franch Northern territories back to war. Secondly, this part explores the rebirth of local nationalism seen through Gendarmerie reports. These reports also provide a great insignht in the role played by Gendarmes during the "Constantinois" revolts of May and the way the revolts were repressed

Abstract:
N. Balchin, p. Bottome, e. Bowen, n. Collins, h. Green, g. Greene, r. Greenwood, j. Hanley, i. Holden, a. Kavan, j. B. Priestley, w.

O'Sullivan, Brian. "Away All Boats: A Study of the evolution and development of amphibious warfare in the Pacific War." Thesis, University of Canterbury. History, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1641.

Full text
Abstract:
Amphibious operations are a topic central to the history of World War Two in the Pacific Theatre. The majority of research on this topic has been centred on the impact of American experiences and successes attributed to the development and evolution of amphibious warfare. The contributions of the United Kingdom and Japan to the development of amphibious warfare have been either overlooked or marginalized. This thesis will investigate the amphibious activities of all three powers both during and before the Pacific War, and seek to explain the importance of each nation's contribution to amphibious warfare. In addition, the thesis will demonstrate how in its highest forms amphibious operations became a fully fledged system of global force projection. The thesis will explain how each of these powers interpreted the legacy of the failure of the 1915 Gallipoli campaign both in the context of their own wartime experiences, and in their respective strategic worldviews. This interpretation is central to how each power prepared for amphibious operations in the next war. The importance of the geography of the Pacific Ocean to the evolution and development of amphibious warfare will be discussed, as will the advances in technology that allowed the creation of logistical systems to support these operations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study examines the ways in which news of the systematic deportation and murder of European Jewry by Nazi Germany was presented and interpreted in a sample of the regional press in Britain.;The main inquiry examines the content of the Manchester Guardian, the Yorkshire Post and Glasgow Herald from January 1942 until June 1943. It does not cover the pre-war period but includes a prologue (1939-41) and epilogue (1943--45) to provide an indication of the kind of coverage available to the regional press at the time.;It also presents a quantitative overview of the range of coverage about Jews/Jewish issues in each of the sample newspapers in order to identify and illustrate the nature and extent of news concerning Jews in Britain, Palestine and Nazi-occupied Europe during the main sample period. An additional content analysis of one newspaper, the Manchester Guardian, is used to assess the 1939--41 and 1943--45 periods and thus provides an overview of the relevant coverage during the entire war period.;The study pays particular attention to the sources of news concerning ghettoisation, executions, deportation, and the systematic mass murder of Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe. It also concentrates on the views and comments of the newspapers in leader columns and readers' letters. An integral part of the discussion is the newspapers' assessment of the official and public reaction to the news of the Nazi extermination programme.;It is found that each of the newspapers were fully aware of the Nazis' intention to murder all Jews under their control by December 1942. They all reported the events that came to be understood as the Holocaust, (some in extraordinary detail) but the Manchester Guardian stood apart because of the consistency of its coverage.

Abstract:
World War II profoundly impacted Florida. The military geography of the State is essential to an understanding the war. The geostrategic concerns of place and space determined that Florida would become a statewide military base. Florida’s attributes of place such as climate and topography determined its use as a military academy hosting over two million soldiers, nearly 15 percent of the GI Army, the largest force theUS ever raised. One-in-eight Floridians went into uniform. Equally,Florida’s space on the planet made it central for both defensive and offensive strategies. The Second World War was a war of movement, and Florida was a major jump off point forUSforce projection world-wide, especially of air power. Florida’s demography facilitated its use as a base camp for the assembly and engagement of this military power. In 1940, less than two percent of the US population lived in Florida, a quiet, barely populated backwater of the United States.[1] But owing to its critical place and space, over the next few years it became a 65,000 square mile training ground, supply dump, and embarkation site vital to the US war effort. Because of its place astride some of the most important sea lanes in the Atlantic World,Florida was the scene of one of the few Western Hemisphere battles of the war. The militarization ofFloridabegan long before Pearl Harbor. The pre-war buildup conformed to theUSstrategy of the war. The strategy of theUS was then (and remains today) one of forward defense: harden the frontier, then take the battle to the enemy, rather than fight them inNorth America. The policy of “Europe First,” focused the main US war effort on the defeat of Hitler’sGermany, evaluated to be the most dangerous enemy. In Florida were established the military forces requiring the longest time to develop, and most needed to defeat the Axis. Those were a naval aviation force for sea-borne hostilities, a heavy bombing force for reducing enemy industrial states, and an aerial logistics train for overseas supply of expeditionary campaigns. The unique Florida coastline made possible the seaborne invasion training demanded for USvictory. The civilian population was employed assembling mass-produced first-generation container ships, while Floridahosted casualties, Prisoners-of-War, and transient personnel moving between the Atlantic and Pacific. By the end of hostilities and the lifting of Unlimited Emergency, officially on December 31, 1946, Floridahad become a transportation nexus. Florida accommodated a return of demobilized soldiers, a migration of displaced persons, and evolved into a modern veterans’ colonia. It was instrumental in fashioning the modern US military, while remaining a center of the active National Defense establishment. Those are the themes of this work. [1] US Census of Florida 1940. The first part (june 17 th 1940- june 21 st 1941) analyses the settlement of vichy's form of governement, the economy, the provisioning, the first resistance movment and the evolution of opinion. The second part (from june 22nd 1941 to november 11th 1942) evokes the failure of national revolution, the daily life difficulties, the mutation of opinion and the statement of the resistance. The third part (november 12th, 1942 - summer 1943) analyses the german's occupation, the increasing repression of vichy's government (militia, legion of french volunters against bolchevism, compulsory work service), the provisioning and a resistance which enlists more and more supporters. The fourth part (summer 1943- august 23nd 1944) describes the population's difficulties getting more and more important (collaboration, occupation, provisioning, etc. ), opinion, the united resistance and the liberation. The fifth part (august 21st 1944 - may 8th 1945) analyses the establishment of new powers (liberation commitee, special delegation, police), improvisioning, sparetime activities, relations with americain soldiers, elimination of collaborationists, politics and finally the municipal election of april-may 1945. An enlarged conclusion tries to show the originality of martigues through the themes mentioned

Bond, Barbara A. "MI9's escape and evasion mapping programme 1939-1945." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3553.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the programme of mapping produced on silk, and other fabric, by MI9 to facilitate the escape and evasion of British military personnel during World War II. It considers the creation of MI9 in December 1939, the rationale for the new military intelligence branch and the context of the history of military mapping on silk. The map production programme is described, together with its progress and the challenges faced. The various groups of maps are identified and described, together with the source maps on which they were based. This description is developed in nine appendices produced as an integral part of the research to provide a comprehensive carto-bibliography of the 234 individual maps which have been identified. Location details of extant copies in British map collections are also provided. The ingenious methods of smuggling the maps into the camps, with other escape aids, in apparently innocuous leisure items are described. The maps were then copied and reproduced to support the escapes. Coded correspondence with the camps is discussed, and a successful deciphering of some of that correspondence is provided. The implications for the escape and evasion programme were considerable, but so too were the implications of the passage of intelligence from the camps to aid the war effort, a factor apparently largely overlooked in previous studies of the wartime role of the intelligence branches. Three case studies are provided to demonstrate the role and importance of the contribution made by the maps to the escape and evasion programme. The conclusion assesses the significance of this little known episode in British historical cartography of the twentieth century which essentially provides the latest chapter in the story of military mapping on silk, and other fabric, through the ages.

Abstract:
The strategic air offensive against Germany during World War II formed a major part of Britain's wartime military effort and it has subsequently attracted the attention of historians. Despite the attention, historians have paid little attention to the impact of the strategic air offensive on Britain. This thesis attempts to redress this situation by providing an examination of the economic impact on Britain of the offensive. The work puts the economic cost of the offensive into its historical context by describing the strategic air offensive and its intellectual underpinnings. Following this preliminary step, the economic costs are described and quantified across a range of activities using accrual accounting methods. The areas of activity examined include the expansion of the aircraft industry, the cost of individual aircraft types, the cost of constructing airfields, the manufacture and delivery of armaments, petrol and oil, and the recruitment, training and maintenance of the necessary manpower. The findings are that the strategic air offensive cost Britain £2.78 billion, equating to an average cost of £2,911.00 for every operational sortie flown by Bomber Command or £5,914.00 for every Germany civilian killed by aerial bombing. The conclusion reached is the damage inflicted upon Germany by the strategic air offensive imposed a very heavy financial burden on Britain that she could not afford and this burden was a major contributor to Britain's post-war impoverishment.

Abstract:
The resettlement of Baltic Germans from Estonia and Latvia to the Polish territories initiated the dissolution of the Baltic German community and its unique identity, largely causing hardship and suffering throughout the occupation in Poland. The subsequent escape from the Red Army and deportations by the Poles at the end of World War II completed the disbanding. It brought innocent families, as well as Baltic German soldiers, to and beyond the limits of their ability to endure pain and suffering. Yet, throughout the process, Baltic Germans’ reaction to the opportunities and crisis varied greatly. The following study will uncover the diverse fates Baltic Germans endured and reveal the range of Baltic German’s culpability and victimhood throughout the resettlement process and the subsequent migration west.
