Abstract:
For ninety years, the alliance name Festucion valesiacae has been widely and almost exclusively used to designate the alliance of steppic, xeric grasslands on deep soils from Central Europe to western Ukraine. However, there is an earlier, hardly used heterotypic synonym, the Festucion sulcatae, that would be the correct name according to the rules [recte: Festucion rupicolae nom. corr.]. In order to preserve a well-established name, we propose to conserve the name Festucion valesiacae against the name Festucion sulcatae. In addition, we typify the name Festucion rupicolae Soó 1930 nom. corr. with the association Festuco rupicolae-Stipetum pennatae Soó 1930 nom. corr., for which we also select a neotype. This proposal is supported by the fact that the alliance Festucion valesiacae is the conserved type of the order Festucetalia valesiacae. Abstract:
Abstract. A substantial amount of CO2 is released into the atmosphere from the process of the high-temperature decomposition of limestone to produce lime. However, during the lifecycle of lime production, the alkaline components of lime will continuously absorb CO2 from the atmosphere during use and waste disposal. Here, we adopt an analytical model describing the carbonation process to obtain regional and global estimates of carbon uptake from 1930 to 2020 using lime lifecycle use-based material data. The results reveal that the global uptake of CO2 by lime increased from 9.16 Mt C yr−1 (95 % confidence interval, CI: 1.84–18.76 Mt C) in 1930 to 34.84 Mt C yr−1 (95 % CI: 23.50–49.81 Mt C) in 2020. Cumulatively, approximately 1444.70 Mt C (95 % CI: 1016.24–1961.05 Mt C) was sequestered by lime produced between 1930 and 2020, corresponding to 38.83 % of the process emissions during the same period, mainly contributed from the utilization stage (76.21 % of the total uptake). We also fitted the missing lime output data of China from 1930 to 2001, thus compensating for the lack of China's lime production (cumulative 7023.30 Mt) and underestimation of its carbon uptake (467.85 Mt C) in the international data. Since 1930, lime-based materials in China have accounted for the largest proportion (about 63.95 %) of the global total. Our results provide data to support including lime carbon uptake into global carbon budgets and scientific proof for further research of the potential of lime-containing materials in carbon capture and storage. Abstract:
Names at the rank of section are here published for five of the nine unranked infrageneric names that were validly published in Kalanchoe by Alwin Berger in 1930. These are: [1] K. sect. Scapigerae; [2] K. sect. Linearifoliae; [3] K. sect. Socotranae; [4] K. sect. Integrifoliae; and [5] K. sect. Pumilae. These five section names have the corresponding unranked infrageneric names of Berger (1930) as basionyms. For two of Berger’s nine validly published unranked names, [6] K. sect. Stellatopilosae and [7] K. sect. Trichanthae, names had already been validly published at the rank of section, in 2020 and 2023, respectively, with these also having been based on the corresponding two unranked infrageneric names of Berger. For a further one, a new name at the rank of section, [8] K. sect. Raveta, was validly published in 2022. For [9] K. [infragen. unranked] Pubescentes the new status of K. subg. Pubescentes is published. The 10th (and final) unranked name, “K. [infragen. unranked] Crenatae”, of Berger (1930) was not validly published because it included the type of the genus Kalanchoe, and did not repeat the genus name unaltered as its epithet.

Huang, Zi, Jiaoyue Wang, Longfei Bing, Yijiao Qiu, Rui Guo, Ying Yu, Mingjing Ma, et al. "Global carbon uptake of cement carbonation accounts 1930–2021." Earth System Science Data 15, no. 11 (November 7, 2023): 4947–58. http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/essd-15-4947-2023.

Abstract:
Abstract. The main contributor to the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of the cement industry is the decomposition of alkaline carbonates during clinker production. However, systematic accounts for the reverse of this process – namely carbonation of calcium oxide and other alkaline oxides and/or hydroxides within cement materials during cements' life cycles – have only recently been undertaken. Here, adopting a comprehensive analytical model, we provide the most updated estimates of CO2 uptake by cement carbonation. The accumulated amount of global CO2 uptake by cements produced from 1930 to 2021 is estimated to be 22.9 Gt CO2 (95 % confidence interval, CI: 19.6–26.6 Gt CO2). This amount includes the CO2 uptake by concrete, mortar, construction waste and kiln dust, accounting for 30.1 %, 58.5 %, 4.0 % and 7.1 % respectively. The cumulative carbon uptake by cement materials from 1930 to 2021 offsets 55.1 % of the emissions from cement production (41.6 Gt CO2, 95 % CI: 38.7–47.2 Gt CO2) over the same period, with the greater part coming from mortar (58.5 % of the total uptake). China has the highest cement carbon uptake, with cumulative carbonation of 7.06 Gt CO2 (95 % CI: 5.22–9.44 Gt CO2) since 1930. In addition, the carbon uptake amounts of the USA, EU, India and the rest of the world took 5.0 %, 23.2 %, 5.6 % and 34.8 % separately. As a result of rapidly increased production in recent years, over three-quarters of the cement carbon uptake has occurred since 1990. Additionally, our results show little impact by the COVID-19 pandemic on cement production and use, with carbon uptake reaching about 0.92 Gt CO2 (95 % CI: 0.78–1.10 Gt CO2) in 2020 and 0.96 Gt CO2 (95 % CI: 0.81–1.15 Gt CO2) in 2021. Our uniformly formatted and most updated cement uptake inventories provide coherent data-based support for including cement carbon uptake into future carbon budgets from the local to global scale. The latest version contains the uptake data till 2021, showing the global uptake's increasing pattern and offering more usable and relevant data for evaluating cement's carbon uptake capacity. All the data described in this study are accessible at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7516373 (Bing et al., 2023).

Abstract:
The monograph by Russian-American researcher, translator and critic Galina Lapina Americans in Moscow: 1930–1940 is dedicated to pre-war Soviet-American theatrical, educational, cinematic, diplomatic, literary contacts. Among the heroes of the book are American Ambassador Joseph E. Davis and his chauffeur Charles Ciliberti, writers Langston Hughes and Dorothy West, playwright Sophie Treadwell, actress Blanche Yurka and other writers, artists, diplomats, journalists who came to the USSR in the 1930s and early 1940s. The book consists of five chapters; each of them is devoted to a certain episode of Soviet-American connections: the failed film project Black and White; The Promised Land, Sophie Treadwell's play about Soviet life; Moscow theater festivals of 1933–1937; history of the Anglo-American Institute (1933–1935), Moscow summer school for American students; a comparison of two books about the USSR — Joseph E. Davis’ Mission to Moscow (1943) and Charles Siliberti’s Backstage Mission to Moscow (1946), that show Soviet reality from the opposing points of view. The book that is, in fact, a collection of articles, is however marked by unity and integrity; it reconstructs the general context of the period in question on the basis of the extensive material. Memoirs, correspondence, archival documents, Soviet and American press form a vivid picture of Soviet-American relations in the pre-war decade. Many sources revealing American attitudes towards the USSR used by the author, have not yet been translated or published in Russia. Galina Lapina’s book encourages further research and publishing projects.

Abstract:
BackgroundJuvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic inflammatory disease in children affecting mobility and physical function. The hip is a load-bearing joint and its damage has a significant functional impact. An appropriate scoring system is mandatory to monitor structural progression and damage over time. The childhood Arthritis Radiographic Score of the Hip (CARSH) is a valid score covering the osteoarticular changes in the hip joint as space narrowing, erosions, malalignment, sclerosis, flattening of the femoral head, and growth abnormalities [1].ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to assess radiographic changes in the hip joint using the CARSH in children suffering from JIA with hip involvement and to determine the impact of disease factors in this score.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted in the pediatric rheumatology department and included patients with JIA according to the ILAR criteria. We included children with hip involvement defined as the presence of hip pain and/or limping and range motion limitation, and/or abnormal hip findings in pelvic radiography, ultrasound, or MRI. We collected from the recorded data demographics, disease characteristics [symptom duration, disease presentation, JIA subtypes], and disease activity: Juvenile arthritis disease activity (JADAS10). Experimented and blinded pediatric rheumatologists read the pelvic radiograph using the Childhood Arthritis Radiographic Score of the Hip (CARSH).ResultsTwenty-two children with a mean age of 13 years [5-22] were included in the study. The gender ratio was 1.4 (13 Males/9 Females). The median age of disease onset was 9.5 years [4-14]. The mean duration of the disease was 47 months [4-156]. The diagnostic delay median was 22 months [1-120]. The patient global assessment (PGA) median was 4 [0-8]. The visual analog scale (VAS) median was 3.6 [0-8]. The sedimentation rate (SR) and the C reactive protein (CRP) median were 25 [2-65] and 10 [1-47]; respectively. The JADAS median was 6 [0-18]. Forty-four hips were analyzed. The median score of CARSH was 1.8 [0-7]. The CARSH was positively correlated to the age of disease onset (r = 0.4; p = 0.04). No other significant correlations were found between the CARSH and the gender (p= 0.3), the duration of the disease (r = 0.7; p = 0.7), the diagnostic delay (r = 0.02; p = 0.9), the PGA (r = 0.1; p = 0.5), the VAS (r = -0.4; p = 0.8), the ESR (r = -0.08; p = 0.7), the CRP (r = -0.1; p = 0.6) and the JADAS 10 (r = 0.01; p = 0.9).ConclusionThis study showed that the radiographic score CARSH was correlated to the age of disease onset. Our findings confirm that structural damage was more important in late-onset disease whereas early hip involvement affects growth and joint development.Reference[1] Bertamino M, Rossi F, Pistorio A, et al. Abstract:
In this work, the thermal efficiency of a dual-operated solar cooking and drying system that may be utilized for domestic use was examined. An analysis of the system’s thermal performance was conducted at Sokoto Energy Research Centre (SERC) using the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Sampling cooking and drying tests were carried out, and the potential for extended cooking time for brine solution and animal fat was conducted. The results showed that the first figure of merit (F1) value agrees with the standard value of 0.12 and the second figure of merit (F2) value is in close correspondence with 0.25 (BIS Standard). The system was able to dehydrate 89 % of the moisture content of banana slices weighing 118 g which is of uniform thickness of 4 mm to achieve a stable weight of 12 g after 8 hours of drying. Animal fat showed more potential for extended cooking time than brine solution, as it took 5 hours to cool after heating for about 3 hours. Six pieces of eggs were boiled for 45 minutes in a temperature range of 29.7 oC and 88.2 oC. These findings indicate the potential of this dual-operated system for domestic applications.
