Abstract:
One of the most visible features of Nationalist rule on Taiwan throughout the period of martial law (1948–87) was the promotion of a personality cult focused on the figure of Chiang Kai-shek. This article is an examination of the ways in which the disparate elements which made up this cult were produced. It considers how the cult reflected a political culture which originated in the Nanjing decade and the subsequent war years, yet which adapted to the realities of post-war exile in Taiwan. This study suggests that whilst the Chiang personality cult was promoted by the central government (and by Chiang himself) it was quasi-official organizations and individuals who were primarily responsible for the production of its written, visual and monumental texts.

Abstract:
The diagnosis of the Themus (Telephorops) nepalensis species-group is summarized. A catalogue, a key and a distribution map of all world species are provided. Two synonymies are proposed: Themus (Telephorops) subcaeruleiformis Wittmer, 1983, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) crassimargo Champion, 1926; T. (Telephorops) separandus Wittmer, 1975, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) laboissierei (Pic, 1929). The female internal genitalia are photographed and described in this species-group for the first time, the aedeagi of T. (Telephorops) crassipes Pic, 1929 and T. (Telephorops) impressipennis (Fairmaire, 1886) are illustrated and described for the first time, and some additional distribution information is provided for the species. Themus (Telephorops) cavipennis (Fairmaire, 1897) is a new record for the Chinese fauna.

Full text
Abstract:
Airfoil theory for unsteady motion has been developed extensively assuming the undisturbed medium to be of uniform density, a restriction accurate for motion in the atmosphere, Glauert (1929), Burgers (1935), Theodorsen (1935), Kussner (1936), Karman and Sears (1938), Kinney and Sears (1975). In some instances, notably for airfoils comprising fan, compressor and turbine blade rows, the undisturbed medium may carry density variations or “spots,” resulting from non-uniformities in temperature or composition, of a size comparable to the blade chord. This condition exists for turbine blades, Marble (1975), Giles and Krouthen (1988), immediately downstream of the main burner of a gas turbine engine where the density fluctuations of the order of 50 percent may occur. Disturbances of a somewhat smaller magnitude arise from the ingestion of hot boundary layers into fans, Wortman (1975), and exhaust into hovercraft. Because these regions of non-uniform density convect with the moving medium, the airfoil experiences a time varying load and moment which we propose to calculate.

Abstract:

AbstractThe term ‘Bakhtin Circle’ is used to refer to a group of Russian thinkers centred around Mikhail Bakhtin in the years following the 1917 Revolution. The group's prime concern was with the importance of questions of language-use in social life, and with the way in which language-use registered conflicts between social groups and classes. Prominent members, as well as Bakhtin himself, included P.N. Medvedev and V.N. Voloshinov. Between 1929, when a number of members were arrested, and his death in 1975, Bakhtin continued to work on the issues which had occupied the group.

Abstract:
Since the appearance of Stuart N. Wolfenden's monumentalOutlines of Tibeto-Burman linguistic morphologyin 1929, attention has increasingly focused not only on derivational processes in Tibeto-Burman, but also on the flexional morphology of conjugations and declensions. The first systematic comparison of Tibeto-Burman conjugational and pronominal morphology was James John Bauman's elaboratePronouns and pronominal morphology in Tibeto-Burmanin 1975. Bauman put to rest any lingering doubts that the conjugations of Tibeto-Burman languages could be attributed to an Austro- Asiatic substrate, and he adduced a vast body of data demonstrating the nativeness and antiquity of conjugational morphology in Tibeto-Burman. Verbal agreement in Tibeto-Burman has traditionally been known by Hodgson's term ‘pronominalization’, based on the assumption that conjugational affixes ultimately derive from ancient independent pronouns. Bauman demonstrated that the conjugational systems of Tibeto-Burman languages, and therefore any ancient pronominal system they may reflect, are more conservative than the independent pronominal systems attested in individual languages. Based on a comparison of these conjugations, Bauman (1975: 195, 237, 247) proposed the prototypical Tibeto-Burman agreement system shown in tables 1 and 2.

Abstract:

Abstract:
SynopsisBecause of the wide latitudinal range of Sitka spruce, trees of different origin show very large differences in growth rate and adaptability when grown on a variety of sites in Britain. The Forestry Commission has forty-eight seed origin trials, planted between 1929 and 1975, which are now beginning to provide a good overall picture of this variation. On the other hand, differences in morphology and colour are relatively minor, so that it is very difficult to identify the seed origin of a stand of trees on visual grounds alone. Southerly origins (below Latitude 47°N) grow fastest, but they suffer more severe frost damage, particularly in the nursery, and tend to have lower density timber than those from 53°N or above.

Abstract:
A comprehensive redescription of the poorly known mecistocephalid genus Krateraspis Lignau, 1929 and its two species is provided, based on the examination of type material and new specimens, as well as the critical evaluation of all published information. Krateraspis is confirmed differing from all other Mecistocephalidae especially for a peculiar pattern of areolation and setation of the clypeus. Records from 24 localities indicate that Krateraspis is limited to a narrow area of Middle Asia, from the Western Tian-Shan to the western offshoots of Pamir Mountains. Two species are morphologically distinguishable: K. meinerti (Sseliwanoff, 1881) and K. sselivanovi Titova, 1975. They differ mainly in details of the clypeus and maxillae, in the pattern of forcipular denticles, and in the number of legs. Tygarrup asiaticus Verhoeff, 1930 is confirmed as a junior synonym of K. meinerti, and a lectotype is designated for the former.

Abstract:
A few years ago, comparisons were being made between the recession of the early 1980s in Britain and that of 50 years earlier, in the 1930s. The latter was followed by a recovery in output which lasted over five years. A new recession appeared in 1938, but it was swiftly overtaken by growing rearmament and the outbreak of war. On this occasion, the recovery of output has already run for six years and, though there may well be more to come, we now have sufficient figures to make a worthwhile comparison of recession and recovery in the two periods. It is the strong similarity in the strength and depth of the two recessions which makes the comparison of the subsequent recoveries a useful measure of the success of recent economic performance. In terms of annual data 1929 and 1979 were the peaks of the preceding expansion, and we take advantage of the coincidence of the last digit. Those variables expressed in index number form are taken as 100 in the years 1925 and 1975, and we characterise the periods 1925-37 and 1975-87 as Then and Now. Data for Then are taken mainly from Feinstein (1972) and for Now from Economic Trends and other current official sources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mercury transits are important for the investigation of long-term variations in the Earth rotation. They have been observed for more than 300 years. The basic array of this set is the visual observation of contacts (as a rule the second and third ones). The detection of the instant corresponding to the geometrical contact of the solar and Mercury limbs is a difficult task, since during 10s to 60s, the set of phases is observed transforming continuously from one to another. One of the encumbering factors, is the so-called “black drop” phenomenon, i.e., the dark cross-bar formed between the limbs (Struve, 1882; Kuhl, 1929; Wittman, 1974; Morrison et al., 1975). The influence of this factor could be negleted if the observations were distributed uniformly with regard to contacts, observers and observational conditions. In fact, it is far from that and the necessity of reduction corrections arises.

The aims of this paper are: (i) to report new dialect data for a vowel contrast in Acehnese which was not recorded in earlier descriptive work, (ii) to show that this contrast is cognate with a contrast reconstructed for Proto–Chamic, and (iii) to reconstruct this part of the vowel system of Proto–Aceh–Chamic.A close genetic relationship between Acehnese and Chamic was first suggested by Nieman (1891). Although a contrary view was expressed by Blagden (1929), the issue has been conclusively put to rest by the work of Cowan (1933, 1948, 1974, 1981, 1983, 1988), Shorto (1975, 1977) and Collins (1975) who all agree on the existence of a distinct Aceh–Chamic sub–group within Austronesian.Unfortunately, comparative work on Aceh-Chamic (Cowan: Chamo- Achehic, Shorto: Achino-Cham) has been hampered by problems of access to the data. In Lee's (1966) and Burnham's (1976) reconstructions of Proto-Chamic no mention is made of Acehnese. On the other hand, Cowan and Shorto, the two scholars who have furthered Aceh-Chamic studies the most, have not had access to Lee (1966), nor, in more recent works, to Burnham (1976). Another problem has been that Acehnese source materials have been restricted to just one dialect, as reflected by Djajadiningrat's (1934) and Kreemer's (1931) Acehnese-Dutch dictionaries. This paper represents one step towards addressing some of these problems, by comparing new Acehnese dialect data with the comparative Chamic wordlist compiled by Lee and augmented by Burnham. Abstract:
Abstract This article offers an in-depth reading of the poetic cycle Het graf van Pernath (1977; Pernath’s Tomb) by the Flemish author and novelist Hugo Claus (1929-2008). The cycle is only one of the many tributes to the prominent post-experimental Flemish poet Hugues C. Pernath, who died in 1975. First, the present article shows how Het graf van Pernath displays a complex attitude towards the genre tradition of the tombeau littéraire in particular and funerary poetry in general. Claus’s poems intricately respect, oppose and transform both traditional formal conventions of the genre and dominant conceptions of death and grief. Second, this article demonstrates how Claus’s exploration of the funerary tradition goes hand in hand with an exploration of the genre of confessional poetry, which has become the dominant paradigm in the post-Romantic lyric. Indeed, Claus’s critical poetic homage to a befriended poet can also be interpreted as a critical unmasking of both authors’ very own poetic practice as a form of semantic deceit.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In modern Turkish, the apostrophe is used to separate proper names from inflectional endings (İzmir’de ‘in İzmir’). This is not the case with inflected common nouns (şehirde ‘in the city’). In this respect, the apostrophe constitutes an instance of graphematic dissociation between proper names and common nouns. Interestingly, the apostrophe was originally employed to transliterate hamza and ayn in Arabic and Persian loanwords (san’at ‘art’). However, these loanwords gradually lost the apostrophe (sanat ‘art’). This implies that Turkish experienced a graphematic change whereby the apostrophe developed from a phonographic marker of glottal stop into a morphographic marker of morpheme boundaries in proper names. This refunctionalization process is illustrated by a diachronic corpus analysis based on selected issues of the newspaper Cumhuriyet from 1929–1975. The findings reveal that the use of the apostrophe with proper names was triggered by foreignness. More specifically, the apostrophe first occurred with foreign names to highlight morpheme boundaries (Eden’in ‘of Eden’) and then expanded to native names via animacy (Doğan’ın ‘of Doğan’).

Abstract:
Introduction: ‘Land Reform’ and Rural SecurityThe objective of this paper is to examine the nature of the interface between two systems of land tenure in an area of smallholdings, Murang'a District, Central Province, Kenya. The first, the ng'undu system, evolved in the fertile, dissected plateau area east of the Nyandarua Range since the Kikuyu migrated there in the early seventeenth century (Muriuki, 1974: 62–82; Government of Kenya, 1929: 6); the second, a freehold system of individual land tenure, was introduced by the colonial state in the mid-1950s as a political instrument to counter the force of Mau Mau (Lamb, 1974; Leys, 1975). The latter system, it was intended, would replace the former, thereby laying the basis for an intensification of African agriculture which was also, under the Swynnerton Plan, to include production for the urban and export markets (Heyer, 1981; House and Killick, 1983). Commitment to this same principle continues to inform present agricultural policy (Government of Kenya, 1984a, Kenya Development Plan 1984–1988, p. 187; 1986,: 88).

Abstract:
The social research performed by Danilo Montaldi (1929-1975) represented an interpretation of great interest in understanding the transformations of neo-capitalism between the 1950’s and 1960’s. In the ambit of a very critical militancy towards the traditional forms of political participation, his attention to subordinates is marked, in our view, by a significant pedagogical aspect. On the one hand, in fact, he focuses on the political and social processes through which subordinate subjectivity is formed, with particular regard to the role played by the institutions, while on the other hand, he examines strategies with regard to his own emancipation from that condition of oppression, based on the idea of education intended as liberation. Where the educational commitment and political commitment merge in the same project of reconstruction of society, looking beyond the drifts of neocapitalism in view of a world capable of recognizing the rights of all respecting each other’s differences. This, as has been observed by several commentators, seems to be the most significant legacy of Danilo Montaldi’s intellectual commitment.

Abstract:
The British Library holds one of 65 existing copies of the first dated book printed in Muscovy by Ivan Fedorov and Petr Mstislavets, the Apostol (Acts and Epistles) (1564) and one of two known copies of Ivan Fedorov’s Primer (L’viv, 1574), which is considered by many to be the first Cyrillic book printed in Ukraine. The recent history of these books is linked to the name of the legendary Russian art critic and impresario Serge Diaghilev (1872–1929). Both titles belonged to his private book collection. A story of Diaghilev’s collection became part of the history of the British Library when in 1975 it acquired, among other books and manuscripts, his copy of the famous 1564 Apostol. Diaghilev’s copy of the 1574 Primer resurfaced at Harvard University Library, but its detailed descriptions and facsimile editions helped the British Library curator Christine Thomas, then in charge of the Russian collections, to identify a second copy, which is now held at the British Library. This article tells the story of how over 70 titles from Diaghilev’s collection of rare Russian books and manuscripts were acquired by the British Library, examines possible reasons for Diaghilev’s passion for books, and highlights other themes relevant for the history of private and public book collecting.

ABSTRACT:The digital-technologic mobility has resignified social practices which – being re-located to other time-space frames – bring about a myriad of apparatus and genres, usually hybrid in its birth. The objective of this paper is to analyze two posts published in public social networks supported by Facebook, aiming at establishing possible dialogues between the concepts of chronotope and architectonic (as an articulating axis of utterances). We take as methodology a dialogic discourse analysis, based on Bakhtin´s proposed ideas (1981b; 1998[1975], 2006 [1929]). A plural and translingual approach to the languages which outcome from data sustains the analysis which questions its overlapping with critical language education. Recuero (2009) views of social media networks fundaments the understanding that they might be taken as a “metaphor” for the relationships established among their participants and assumes that Facebook takes a role of a system which supports those relations. In order to establish connections, social media participants resort to multimodality and multissemiosis as they construct, “like” and share texts/utterances that are permeated by cultural plurality, both refracting and reflecting it. Thus, contemporary literacies are constituted by as well as they constitute (themselves) those practices, within multiple and diverse literacies which are interconnected by hypertextual interactions, generating a new ethos. Those interlocutors allow themselves to (re) produce and circulate texts, engaging discursively to construct contextually shared meanings and sometimes pointing to translingualism and its manifestations.KEYWORDS: digital Technologies; social media; critical linguistic education; architectonic; translingualism.

Wassily Leontief jun. (1905–1999) moved to Berlin in April 1925 after getting his first academic degree from the University of Leningrad. In Berlin he mainly studied with Werner Sombart and Ladislaus von Bortkiewicz who were the referees of his Ph.D. thesis “The economy as a circular flow” (1928). From spring 1927 until April 1931 Leontief was a member of the research staff at the Kiel Institute of World Economics, interrupted by the period from April 1929 to March 1930 when he was an advisor to the Chinese Ministry of Railroads. In the journal of the Kiel Institute, Weltwirtschaftliches Archiv, Leontief had already published his first article “Die Bilanz der russischen Volkswirtschaft. Eine methodologische Untersuchung” [The balance of the Russian economy. A methodological investigation] in 1925. In Kiel Leontief primarily worked on the statistical analysis of supply and demand curves. Leontief’s method triggered a fierce critique by Ragnar Frisch, which launched a heavy debate on “pitfalls” in the construction of supply and demand curves. The debate started in Germany but was continued in the USA where Leontief became a researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in summer 1931. The Leontief–Frisch controversy culminated in the Quarterly Journal of Economics (1934), published by Harvard University, where Leontief made his subsequent career from 1932–1975. His later analysis of the employment consequences of technological change in the 1980s had some roots in his Kiel period.

Summary. Department of Histology and Embryology appeared at our university through the work of anatomists. Volodymyr Betz has made an important contribution to the development, so he is fairly called “godfather”. Originally, department located in two classrooms of anatomical corps on Fundukleivska str. (now it is called Bogdana Khmelnitskogo str., 37), butthen department was placed in a one-story house nearby. During the evacuation (1941- 1943) department had to be moved into Chelyabinsk. Fortunately, the buildings in Kyiv have been preserved and department has returned in its previous location. When morphological building of the Kiev Medical Institute in Brest-Litovskiy highway 82 (now Peremogi Avenue, 34) was ended, department moved to a new building and is still located there. Everyone who headed the department made an enormous contribution to its development. Only through their efforts the department has become a model, one of the best. Famous histologists: Petro Peremezhko (1868-1891), Yakiv Yakymovych (1891-1904), Fedir Lomynskiy (1905-1924), Olexandr Chernyakhivskiy (1925- 1929), Semen Shahov (1930-1953), Mykola Zazybin (1954- 1975), Kostyantin Kabak (1976-1992) were heads of the department. Since 1992 until now, the department has been being managed by the Corresponding member of NAMN of Ukraine, Professor, MD Yuriy Bogdanovich Chaikovskiy. New scientific discoveries is being made at the department, neyrohistological school continues its life in the works of students and followers. The study of nervous system is continuing, but other systems is being studied too; new embryological research is being held.

AbstractAmong eyeflukes, Tylodelphys Diesing, 1850 includes diverse species able to infect the eyes, but also the brain, pericardial sac and body cavity of their second intermediate host. While the genus shows a cosmopolitan distribution with 29 nominal species in Africa, Asia, Europe and America, a likely lower research effort has produced two records only for all of Australasia. This study provides the first description of a species of Tylodelphys and the first record for a member of the Diplostomidae in New Zealand. Tylodephys sp. metacercaria from the eyes of Gobiomorphus cotidianus McDowall, 1975 is distinguished from its congeners as being larger in all, or nearly all, metrics than Tylodelphys clavata (von Nordmann, 1832), T. conifera (Mehlis, 1846) and T. scheuringi (Hughes, 1929); whereas T. podicipina Kozicka & Niewiadomska, 1960 is larger in body size, ventral sucker and holdfast sizes and T. ophthalmi (Pandey, 1970) has comparatively a very small pharynx and body spination. Tylodelphys sp. exhibits consistent genetic variation for the 28S rDNA, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and Cox1 genes, and phylogenetic analyses confirm that it represents an independent lineage, closely related to North American species. Morphological and molecular results together support the distinct species status of Tylodephys sp. metacercaria, the formal description and naming of which await discovery of the adult. Furthermore, the validity of T. strigicola Odening, 1962 is restored, T. cerebralis Chakrabarti, 1968 is proposed as major synonym of T. ophthalmi, and species described solely on the basis of metacercariae are considered incertae sedis, except those for which molecular data already exist.

Abstract:
The small, oil-rich state of Brunei (population c. 40,000 in 1940) is situated in north-west Borneo. The ‘Abode of Peace’ became a British protectorate in 1888 and a Residential System along Malayan lines came into operation at the beginning of 1906. For most of the Second World War the country was under Japanese Military Administration, a period of three and a half years beginning in December 1941. Allied, predominantly Australian, landings took place in early June 1945 (Fahey 1992: 325–8; Monks 1992: 7–53) and the sultanate was speedily cleared of enemy forces, though not before the latter had successfully executed a scorched-earth programme. Most crucially of all, the Seria oilfield (discovered in 1929 by the Shell company) was set alight, the flames shooting ‘like giant blow-lamps’ at least thirty feet into the air. The last well fire was not extinguished until 27 September 1945 (Harper 1975: 21–4). A report in the Straits Times of 20 July 1946 gives some impression of the problems faced by the returning Western engineers:Most of the [Seria] wells were surrounded by blazing lakes, and the oil experts had to blast their way through. Because of the intense heat it was difficult to get near enough to ‘cap’ them and so seal the fires. In some cases aircraft were used, the fire-fighters advancing through the slipstream of the propellers which blew the flames and oil back. It then became possible to get near enough to thrust forward on long steel arms heavy charges of explosives.

Abstract:
The development of refrigeration is a priority in all countries, given the multidimensional roles that it plays in the sustainable development of society. In developing countries, efforts are being made to catch up with the delayed experienced in the use of refrigeration. To achieve this goal, several countries are allowed to trace the history of refrigeration in their countries in order to understand the main causes of non-expansion, and then set up a new strategy of sustainable development for this technology. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a developing country that has experienced a very interesting history of refrigeration, but is still less known by the Congolese themselves as well as by scientists. This paper has traced out the outline in the history of refrigeration in the DRC. Surveys were conducted in the industrial, health, residential, commercial, and tourism sectors during the colonial and post-colonial period. Results showed that the use of refrigeration in the DRC has been remarkably observed in the industrial sector, especially in breweries, with a cooling capacity ranging from 50.1 thousand to 2.88 million kWh, about 5 659 % between 1929 and 1957; from 3 million to 26.5 million kWh, about 783.3 % between 1958 and 1980, and then dropped to 6.5 million kWh in 2004 before resuming its growth up to 11 million kWh in 2009. The variations in the use of refrigeration during the above periods significantly influenced the economy, in the sense that the economic and social indicators of the country grew from 0.415 to 0.430 between 1975 and 1985, and then declined to 0.375 in 2000, due to political instability, before rising up to 0.410 in 2005.

Abstract:
The present article deals with the comparative analysis of the methodological bases of depicting the authenticity, features, and character of ideological-thematic reflection of the Second World War events on the pages of the novel by Russian writer Vasily Grossman (1905-1964) «Life and Fate» (1960), the masterpiece by the American novelist James Jones (1921-1977) «From here to eternity» (1953) and the work by the Hungarian novelist Imre Kertész (1929-2016) «Fatelessness» (1975). The novels' authors did not need to interpret historical events by other people's memories and strive for a documentary. The original document in the novels was the life and unique memory of the writers themselves, and not only in the sense of the artistic reproduction of the true sides of the survived and seen, but also in terms of serious thoughts about the relationship of the past with the present in their moral, social, philosophical and ethical aspects. The article highlights the events and circumstances that predetermined the formation of features of the writers' worldview and led to the writing of the novels on military topics. The novels «Life and Fate», «Fatelessness», and «From here to eternity» can be considered as deeply personal works by the writers who have not declared, magnified the events of the history in context, but through the image system of the novels deeply examined, analyzed their roots. The authors of the novels have shown the history of the 20th century not on the background of exaggerated, politically agitating, heroic pictures, but from the point of view of the true significance of historical events for modern society. Keywords: documentary, historical memory, regime, literary tradition, writer’s consciousness, historical concreteness.

Abstract:
Members of the genus Phascolion Théel are probably the most familiar of sipunculans because most species inhabit the empty shells of molluscs and other similar structures and are therefore easily collected in dredge samples. Although the genus is represented in most seas and depths, few species have been investigated in detail and much of our knowledge is based on studies of the widespread Atlantic species P. strombi (see Åkesson, 1958; Hylleberg, 1975; Kristensen, 1970; Wesenberg-Lund, 1929). P. strombi is known to be remarkably plastic in many of its characters, particularly external, to the extent that Gerould (1913) was able to distinguish seven varieties in the western Atlantic region alone. Much of the variation in the size and colour of P. strombi, and in the form of the skin papillae, especially those generally termed ‘holdfasts’ or ‘adhesive papillae’, may be attributable to the size and type of shelter that is inhabited but experimental evidence is lacking. It follows that a similar degree of external plasticity to that recognised in P. strombi must be assumed for most, if not all, Phascolion, presently totalling around 45 species. Many Phascolion species have been erected on single or just a few specimens showing only slight differences of dubious systematic significance.Taxonomically, the genus is very difficult and no satisfactory key to the species has yet been devised. As a first step, there is a need for definitions of subgenera, preferably based on internal characters which are not subject to environmental influences. To this end, the retractor systems of the north-east Atlantic species described below have been studied and compared with the type specimens of species from other areas.

Abstract:
The inter-annual stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of three tree-ring cores of P. euphratica (Populus euphratica Oliv.) was determined from Ejina Oasis in Northwest China. A robust and representative δ13C chronology is generated from the three δ13C series using an arithmetic mean method. After eliminating the influence of the δ13C from elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, we obtained a carbon isotopic discrimination (Δ13C) chronology. According to the significant correlation between the tree-ring Δ13C and instrumental data, we reconstructed the mean maximum temperature anomalies from previous December to current September (TDS) for the period 1901–2011. The reconstruction explained 43.6% of the variance over the calibration period. Three high-temperature periods (1929–1965, 1972–1974, and 1992–2006) and three low-temperature periods (1906–1926, 1966–1968, and 1975–1991) were found in the reconstructed series. Comparisons between the reconstructed TDS and the observed mean temperature from previous December to current September in Anxi meteorological station and the temperature index in north-central China demonstrated the reconstructed TDS has the advantage of reliability and stability. The significant spatial correlation declared that the reconstruction has a broad spatial representation and can represent the temperature variation characteristics in a wide geographical area. In addition, we found that the area of Ejina Oasis is smaller (larger) when the mean maximum temperature is higher (lower), which may be due to a conjunction effect of natural and anthropogenic activities. Significant periodicities and correlations suggested that the TDS variations in Ejina Oasis were regulated by solar radiation and atmospheric circulations at the interannual and interdecadal time scales.

Abstract:
Objective - to identify the characteristics of the dynamics of indicators of total body size in students aged 17-22 years with different somatotypes. Material and methods. The study was conducted during 2010-2018 and was based on the results of prospective observations of morphological indicators of 530 students (240 boys and 290 girls) aged 17-22 during the period of study at the university. Body types were determined by the method of V. G. Shtefko and B. A. Ostrovsky (1929) as presented by S. S. Darskaya (1975). Results. Among the examined students, an increase in body length (BL) was found in 49,2 % of young men, and in 35,6 % of girls; the height gain stopped by 21-22 years in boys and by 19-20 years in girls. The majority of students during their study at the university showed increases in body mass and chest circumference. Boys and girls who demonstrated no change or even a decrease in these indicators during the study period were also found. In most senior students, gains in body weight and chest circumferences slowed down when the height growth ceased, but did not stop. It led to an increase in the number of overweight students, which is confirmed by the increase in the number of young people with an alimentive body type and high BMI values, more pronounced among boys. Students with a thoracic body type, which was the most common and dynamic somatotype in the studied sample, showed significant gains in total body size. Similar growth dynamics was found in boys with muscular body type. During training at the university, the number of young people with thoracic body type decreased, while the proportion of students with muscular and alimentive somatotypes increased. During the period of study in high school, the body type changed in 14,1 % students. Conclusions. The dependency of gains in indicators of total body size among boys and girls aged 17-22 on body type was revealed. The body type influenced the speed and direction of the dynamics of indicators of body length, weight and chest circumference.

Nowadays, the novels “Life and Fate” (1960) by Vasily Grossman (1905-1964) and “Fatelessness” (1975)by Imre Kertész (1929-2016) attract attention of not only numerous readers but also literary critics. However, the critical articles focus mainly on the authors' philosophy and characters' thoughts, present commentarieson the world, war, human life under totalitarianism. The paper aims at investigating the magic power of lights, colours, sounds and their artistic reality in the novels“Life and Fate” by Vasily Grossman and “Fatelessness” by Imre Kertész; at revealing, analyzing and comparingthe meaning of lights, sounds, colours and theirs effect on the images embodied by writers in the novels “Lifeand Fate” and “Fatelessness”.Despite the fact that “Life and Fate” and “Fatelessness” were written in a reserved style there are certaincolours, light and sound effects which influence the emotional world of heroes in the novels. The paper considersthe various meanings of white colour in the novels, various types of the light at night and in the daytime, comparesthe effects of white and dark lights, determines the light of wisdom, gives interpretation to the noise of food kettlesin the novel “Fatelessness” that sounds like a chime in the ears of prisoners in the concentration camp and bringthem to life. The hidden colours, lights and sounds occupied proper places in the novels, their function is artisticallymotivated by Vasily Grossman and Imre Kertész. The light and sound gamma in these novels became integralexpressive tools creating such a background of the sphere of feelings that possesses magical power, helpsto reveal and better understand the emotions of the characters, brings the readers closer to the real time andinvolves them in the conditions and events lived by the characters. The sounds of voices, shades of coloursand aspects of light in the novels “Life and Fate” and “Fatelessness” are immortal, an everlasting bright sparkof life and energy lives in them.

Abstract:
Canada's biomedical research community was deeply saddened by the untimely death of Graham Mainwood on June 10, 1990, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.A native of Birmingham, U.K., Graham joined the Physiology Department at the fledgling Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 1955. Since then, he has been a tireless force in building the reputation of the Department and of the Faculty. He became well known beyond Canada's borders for his studies on the electrophysiology and energetics of muscle and the mechanism of fatigue. His work on the effects of lactate flux and the role of changes in intracellular pH in muscle fatigue (e.g., Mainwood and Worsley-Brown 1975; Mainwood and Cechetto 1982; Renaud, Allard, and Mainwood 1986) is still cited in virtually every paper in this area. These studies, together with an ongoing interest in cardiac muscle, formed a natural platform from which he moved into the area of the elucidation of muscle metabolism by means of magnetic resonance spectroscopy–work he was actively pursuing up to the time of his death. Indeed, he had taken early retirement to be able to spend more time at the bench at the National Research Council of Canada. Three of the papers in this special issue arise from this work. All of us have been greatly touched by his sparkling intellect and generous helpfulness. We felt that the most appropriate way to recognize Graham's contributions to science and to our personal scientific development was to dedicate to his memory a special issue of the Journal which he served with distinction as a member of the Editorial Board for many years.

Horbovyy, Oleksandr. "THE CONTRIBUTION OF A.P. ALEKSANDROV IN THE STUDY OF DNIPRO RAPIDS." Journal of Ukrainian History, no. 39 (2019): 60–66. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/2522-4611.2019.39.8.

Abstract:
The article investigates the contribution of Anatoliy Petrovych Aleksandrov (1903-1994) to the study of the Dnipro rapids. Biographical and comparative methods were used during writing this article. The rapids of river Dnipro occupy a prominent place in the history and culture of Ukraine. And because of this, they are constantly attract attention to themselves, even after their flooding.Researchers of the Dnipro try to fully reproduce the picture of a river as much as possible. But it seems that the experience of A.P. Aleksandrov have not been studied yet. A.P. Aleksandrov lived a bright and extraordinary life. He became an outstanding physicist and renowned scientist in the field of atomic energy. His achievements were highly praised by his contemporaries, who elected a scientist as president of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1975-1986). In the study of his biographies, the main focus is on the scientific and technical aspects of it.Besides that, a fun and exciting scientist's hobby is beyond the detailed research – boat trips along the Dnipro river. Especially often he rested this way during living in Kiev (1903-1930 years). In the 1920's A.P. Aleksandrov had very busy life: he taught physics and chemistry at the labor school №79 (1923-1930), studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Kyiv People's University (1924-1930), conducted scientific research at the Kyiv X-ray Institute, falsified in the electro-technical bureau at a physical-chemical school club, etc. Still, he somehow managed to combine good with pleasure and had a chance to rest on the bank of Dnipro river on his lovely boat every summer. At first – near Kiev, and later – on the Dnipro rapids themselves. According to Aleksandrovs memories and documents from the archive of the Institute of Manuscripts of the National Library of Ukraine named after V.I. Vernads'kyy, we managed to establish that the scientist visited the rapids of Dnipro every summer during four years before it was flooded. At first, probably in 1926, he went to rapids with only one friend. They wanted to see them and, if possible, go down through them. In 1927-1929 as a photographer, he participated in the expedition of A.S. Synyavs'kyy, who was to explore the rapids before flooding. In 1927 the expedition shot a film about the rapids and the Dnipro hydroelectric power station. The expedition was held in the summer of 1930, but without Anatoliy Petrovych. In August 1930 he participated in the First All-Union Congress of Physicists in Odessa and later he moved to Leningrad. During the first trip to the rapids, A.P. Aleksandrov and his friend almost drowned at the Kodats'kyy rapids. Fortunately, friends quickly learned how to swim between granite rocks. At the same time, they not only went down the flow with a boat, but also rose against it. In historical studies, the ability to swim bottom-up dipper rapids up until recently was considered a very controversial issue. Ya.R. Dashkevych writes that in the annotation to the map of Lithuania Makovs'kyy-Radzyvil (1613) it is said that Dmytro Vyshnevets'kyy (about 1517 - 1563/1564) managed to reach the Cherkasy through the rapids (that is, from the bottom up). French engineer Hiyom Levaser de Boplan in his memories of the second half of the seventeenth century also wrote about his personal trip through the rapids of the Dnipro against the flow. O.S. Afanas'yev-Chuzhbyns'kyy in 1861 and Ya.P. Novyts'kyy in 1905, after personal visits to the rapids and communication with local pilots and fishermen, came to the conclusion that it was not possible to overcome the rapids against the flow. A.Kh. Lerberh in 1819 and Ya.R. Dashkevych in 2007 assumed that it was still possible. In 2000, the last pilot of the Dnipro rapids H.M. Omel'chenko (1911-2002) wrote very confidently that he and his father repeatedly swam across the rapids of the Dnipro from below upwards. Memoirs of A.P. Aleksandrov, published in 2002, greatly facilitate the above discussion. Unlike all his predecessors, he describes in detail the technique of swimming through the rapids from the bottom up and its rationale. The point is that the flow does not always flow down the rapids. By stones, it flows up with approximately the same force as it was before it was down. So to swim from the bottom up to the rapids, you need to swim through one of the stones (there flows flow from below upwards), gaining there some sort of a speed boost and cross the strip of ordinary flow to the next stone (up to 2 meters), and so on. So, the memoirs of A.P. Aleksandrova allows a significant advance in the many-year historical debate about the possibility of swimming on the rapids of the Dnipro against the flow. However, they do not prove that all evidence of such a voyage is true. In the long run, the author plans to test the methodology of the scientist in practice and expand the base of historical sources on swimming the rapids. He will also try to find photos and movies that were created in 1927-1929 with the participation of A.P. Aleksandrova.

"Timing of Stressful Life Events Affects Stability and Change of Neuroticism." European Journal of Personality 28, no. 2 (March 2014): 193–200. http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/per.1929.

Abstract:
Neuroticism is a predictor of many health problems. To study the determinants of within–subject change in neuroticism, three hypotheses were tested: (i) subjects who experienced stressful life events (SLEs) show an increase in neuroticism; (ii) high baseline neuroticism moderated this effect; and (iii) recent SLEs had a greater impact on neuroticism than distant SLEs. Data came from the Finnish Twin Cohort. Neuroticism data were collected in 1975 and 1981 and SLEs data in 1981 (n = 21 085). By entering baseline neuroticism as a predictor for neuroticism at follow–up, the outcome measure was change in neuroticism. Changes in neuroticism were predicted from SLE indices or their interaction with baseline neuroticism. Timing of SLEs was taken into account by distinguishing recent from distant SLEs. To control for confounding by shared genes and environments, both within–twin pair and between–twin pair effects were tested for monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs separately. Neuroticism's six–year stability was high (r = .58, p < .001). Exposure to SLEs modestly increased neuroticism (βs > .55, ps < .001), unconfounded by shared genes. This effect was not moderated by high baseline neuroticism. Recent SLEs (.09 < βs < .15) had more impact than distant SLEs (.03 < βs < .11; ps < .01). In conclusion, the findings strongly supported a model of environmentally driven SLEs causing dynamic fluctuations around a person's set point of neuroticism. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
Beldie, I. Vlad, C. Chiriţă, Gr. Eliescu, At.

Abstract:
Topónimo: EspañaPeríodo: Siglo XX ABSTRACTThis study analyses the path traversed by Catholic reactionaries after the War of Independence and their transition from antinational to National Catholic until they converted to Fascism during the period between the Civil War and the outbreak of World War Two. In this respect, it is worth highlighting the work of José Pemartín. This study mainly focuses on three themes in his most important creation, Qué es lo Nuevo: the differences in tone in comparison with the values expressed by both earlier and coetaneous National-Catholic intellectuals; the attempt to reconcile National-Catholic ideology with Falangist thinking; and Fascist doctrine.
