Abstract:
One of the most visible features of Nationalist rule on Taiwan throughout the period of martial law (1948–87) was the promotion of a personality cult focused on the figure of Chiang Kai-shek. This article is an examination of the ways in which the disparate elements which made up this cult were produced. It considers how the cult reflected a political culture which originated in the Nanjing decade and the subsequent war years, yet which adapted to the realities of post-war exile in Taiwan. This study suggests that whilst the Chiang personality cult was promoted by the central government (and by Chiang himself) it was quasi-official organizations and individuals who were primarily responsible for the production of its written, visual and monumental texts.

The diagnosis of the Themus (Telephorops) nepalensis species-group is summarized. A catalogue, a key and a distribution map of all world species are provided. Two synonymies are proposed: Themus (Telephorops) subcaeruleiformis Wittmer, 1983, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) crassimargo Champion, 1926; T. (Telephorops) separandus Wittmer, 1975, syn. nov. = T. (Telephorops) laboissierei (Pic, 1929). The female internal genitalia are photographed and described in this species-group for the first time, the aedeagi of T. (Telephorops) crassipes Pic, 1929 and T. (Telephorops) impressipennis (Fairmaire, 1886) are illustrated and described for the first time, and some additional distribution information is provided for the species. Themus (Telephorops) cavipennis (Fairmaire, 1897) is a new record for the Chinese fauna.

Abstract:
Airfoil theory for unsteady motion has been developed extensively assuming the undisturbed medium to be of uniform density, a restriction accurate for motion in the atmosphere, Glauert (1929), Burgers (1935), Theodorsen (1935), Kussner (1936), Karman and Sears (1938), Kinney and Sears (1975). In some instances, notably for airfoils comprising fan, compressor and turbine blade rows, the undisturbed medium may carry density variations or “spots,” resulting from non-uniformities in temperature or composition, of a size comparable to the blade chord. This condition exists for turbine blades, Marble (1975), Giles and Krouthen (1988), immediately downstream of the main burner of a gas turbine engine where the density fluctuations of the order of 50 percent may occur. Disturbances of a somewhat smaller magnitude arise from the ingestion of hot boundary layers into fans, Wortman (1975), and exhaust into hovercraft. Because these regions of non-uniform density convect with the moving medium, the airfoil experiences a time varying load and moment which we propose to calculate.

Abstract:

AbstractThe term ‘Bakhtin Circle’ is used to refer to a group of Russian thinkers centred around Mikhail Bakhtin in the years following the 1917 Revolution. The group's prime concern was with the importance of questions of language-use in social life, and with the way in which language-use registered conflicts between social groups and classes. Prominent members, as well as Bakhtin himself, included P.N. Medvedev and V.N. Voloshinov. Between 1929, when a number of members were arrested, and his death in 1975, Bakhtin continued to work on the issues which had occupied the group.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis criticises the links between a traditionnal way of philosophizing, and the political practice that lead in our century to totalitarianism. Its project is to point out the urgency of emancipating political thought from this tradition which can be said -if not responsible of totalitarianism- at least co-responsible, because of its resistance to think the conditions of totalitarianism. Thhis work is made of 4 studies about hannah arendt, max stirner, franz rosenzweig and emmanuel levinas. Each of these thinkers tried to get rid of the traditionnal way of thinking, opposing philosophical tradition or opening it to new references of thought. A common theme, the "in-between" one, allows communication between these different thoughts, and opens an other way of thinking politics

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis demonstrates that three pre-keynesians theories of financial instability can be found in Marx, Veblen and Hawtrey. For each of these three authors, the argument is that the theoretical frame displayed allows him question the role of finance in the economic dynamic. Then, analysis of their main writings shows that theories of financial instability can be infered from them. In chapter I, the marxian theory of financial markets is reconstituted paving the way to the demonstration of the central role played by finance in the explanation of the business cycle in Marx’s theory in Chapter 2. In Chapter III, we show what elements in Veblen’s theory constitutes a theory of finance capitalism. Then, the discussion in Chapter IV shows how it a theory of financial instability. In Chapter V is displayed a representation of of Hawtrey’s macro-model. Chapter VI highlights the conditions under which credit is unstable in his theory. Chapter VII shows the links between the three authors’ theories and the economic facts that nurtured their thinking. It shows that their theories of financial instability are an explanation, a representation et a project of regulation of financial capitalism

Abstract:
This dissertation project examines the role of identity, the politics of identity contestation and domestic political structures as part of the mechanisms and processes that may be involved in the decisions that states make regarding disengagement from their colonial and territorial possessions. Specifically, it focuses on the following questions: Why do intransigent states back down on previously entrenched territorial policies? And why, even when states decide to disengage from their territories, are some of these processes peaceful while others are scenes of prolonged, bloody and violent struggles? Focusing on Britain and its reaction to Indian calls for independence from 1929-1935, and Indonesia's withdrawal from East Timor in 1999, this project argues that the processes and mechanisms involved in identity construction, maintenance and change can play an important role in how states approach the issue of territorial disengagement. At the same time, it also argues that the structure of a state's domestic political system may also affect the way in which disengagement takes places. Based on its empirical findings, this dissertation also argues that identities are constructed at both the domestic as well as the international levels, and against an Other, and through narratives. Further, identities do not acquire 'substance' once they have been constructed. Rather they are continually constituted by processes, relations and practices as identities are defined, recognized and validated in an actor's interaction with and in relationship to others. Finally, identity does not only influence human actions through enabling or constraining actions but also through the need to perform who we are or who we say we want to be.

Abstract:
Vestiram as roupas-corpo-humano e as máscaras cara-de-homem e entraram no túnel do tempo rumo à condição humana mais elementar: a vida. A voz somos nós!
ABSTRACT: In a kingdom of invisible spirits a voice screamed one proposition: EARTHLY LIFE. The spirits thought together: do we accept or not this proposition? They dressed the human-body-clothing and the man-face masks and they went into the time tunnel towards the more elemental human condition called: life. Unbearably misbehaving these human-spirits created on Earth new and diversified earthly conditions and they learnt how to communicate with each other - LANGUAGE - behind their masks. They listened for a long time to the old voice now saying: LIFE OF THE SPIRIT. When they said YES, were learning the spirit activities: to think, to want and to judge; when they said NO, they ended by saying YES to the vita activa activities: labor, work and action. Evil spirits one day screamed to the voice: THE SPIRIT ACTIVITY LIFE, and no one answered. They discovered the secret - the voice inside them thought - the VOICE came out from where they screamed ... The clock rolled over a few times, and now, in an imaginary kingdom called theatrical world, the voice was heard saying: THE MISSION - MEMORIES OF A REVOLUTION! And the spirits thought the voice had come back to trick them again. And they yelled: we already know that you are who we are, stop now! And the voice answered: we already know that you are who we are, stop now! And the spirits looked at each other surprised. We are the voice! We are the voice!, the voice said again from inside of them. In the theater they discovered how to (re)discover their ways of living. This thesis is essentially about the invisible and visible life of the being, which Hannah Arendt called the life of the mind and the vita activa, respectively. Additionally the theater of Heiner Müller is brought to this search aiming to visit by thought and motivation the liberation of creative possibilities and policies inside each individual- spectator-actor. Out of this a proposal for a social and private life may emerge.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ángel Bonomini was born in Buenos Aires in 1929 where he lived until his death at the age of sixty-four in 1994. He worked for various newspapers and magazines as an art critic and translator, but always maintaining his literary activity. He inherited the tradition of the Argentine fantastic and was a prolific writer: his production includes essays, poems and fantastic tales.Although he lived in a period of great cultural splendor and his literary talent was recognised by authors such as Borges and Bioy Casares, he fell into an unexplained oblivion, disappearing quite early from the contemporary intellectual environment. His first poems, which date back to the 1950s, were published in Sur magazine and some of his tales were included in well-known anthologies of fantastic literature.Among his collections of poems there are: Primera enunciación (1947), Argumento del enamorado. Baladas con Ángel (1952) written with María Elena Walsh, Torres para el silencio (1982) and Poética (1994). In 1972 he achieved great success with the publication of his first collection of fantastic tales, Los novicios de Lerna, followed by the publication of other books: Libro de los casos (1975), Los lentos elefantes de Milán (1978), Cuentos de amor (1982), Historias secretas (1985) and Más allá del puente (1996), posthumously published.A particular use of the fantastic characterises his work and distinguishes him from his contemporary authors. In his tales there is a continuous contrast between metaphysics and existentialism; in this way, he makes a deep investigation of the reality and, at the same time, he tries to go beyond it.This volume aims to analyse some emblematic tales by Bonomini in which it is possible to find the main topoi of Argentine fantastic and to understand why the author’s literary work is worth studying.

Abstract:
When queried at the end of his life, Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975) identified himself not as a literary scholar but as a philosopher—or more precisely, as a “thinker” (myslitel’). Bakhtin’s book on Dostoevsky (1929, rev. 1963) introduced the potent concepts of dialogism versus monologism, the “fully-weighted idea-hero,” double-voiced discourse, and novelistic polyphony. But even as these concepts began to leak into and then dominate our critical vocabulary, reservations were raised. Bakhtin’s philosophy of dialogue seemed to omit a great deal of Dostoevsky’s texture and wisdom. This essay discusses the virtues and drawbacks of a Bakhtinian reading of Crime and Punishment. It incorporates recent scholarship on Bakhtin’s notion of author–hero relations, and on the possibility of our real and fictive “outsideness” to one another, and on the corruptions to which word and image are prone. It ends with a hypothesis about polyphony, most relevant to Dostoevsky’s first and last great murder novels, which attaches the concept not to literature but to medieval philosophies of music. In so doing it reconciles the linear thrust of dialogue (melody) with two other virtues Bakhtin saw equally present in Dostoevsky’s art: simultaneity and coexistence.
