Abstract:
II Lietuvos Seimas 1923 – 1926 m. Santrauka. Lietuva, 1918 m. paskelbusi nepriklausomybę, pasuko demokratijos keliu. Todėl prezidentas A. Stulginskis 1923 kovo 13 d. paleido I Seimą.
The second Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania 1923 - 1926 Raimundas Trinkūnas Summary Lithuania, declared its independency in 1918, turned to the democracy way. Lithuanians were able to elect representatives directly to Seimas, who represented their interests. Historians started studying more about Constituve Seimas work, because this Seimas put the base for the further life of the juridical state existence, the III Seimas was researched quite in an intensive way as well because of its works and the revolution carried out by the president A. Smetona. The II Seimas got quite little attention. Due to that, it is of present interest to historians to fill the gaps in the researches of parliamentarism. The aims of this work – to analyze the movement and achieved works of the II Seimas. These tasks are raised in order to reach the aim: 1) to produce the review of the II Seimas Eve political situation; 2) to analyze the II Seimas election course and results; 3) to present the quantitive and qualitive indexes of Seimas, and: 4) to discuss about Seimas achieved works in inner (political, cultural, economical and national sphere) and foreign policy. From the 78 Seimas members in the First Seimas (1922-1923) – 38 members were Christian Democrats (position), and the others were opposition fractions. Because of such a number, position and opposition couldn’t work in a proper way. The opposition argued about Republic president, state election legitimacy, and disagreed about important... Hicks, Elliott R. "The London drug culture, c. 1926-1966." Thesis, University of Essex, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.701965.

Abstract:
'The London Drug Culture, c. 1926-1966' is the first historical study of metropolitan drug-use in mid-twentieth-century Britain. This thesis challenges orthodox historical understandings of the development of metropolitan drug-use during the twentieth-century which - focusing upon the events of the 1960s - characterise the phenomenon in terms of rupture, detailing the gradual coalescence of a complex and multifaceted drug culture within central London over the course of these decades. This drug culture, I demonstrate, was both profoundly urban and transnational in its structure and organisation: the coteries of drug-users which crystallised within the capital during the mid-twentieth-century were simultaneously situated within specific spaces of the city, and" within discrete transnational networks of the drug culture. Additionally, this study analyses the narratives of the London drug culture which emerged during this period, seeking to locate and identify the historical roots of these representations, to deconstruct them, and to analyse how they shifted in form during the course of the mid- twentieth-century. Narratives of the metropolitan drug culture, I contend, constituted a site in British culture in which both gendered and racial 'Others' were constructed in opposition to notions of Britain and Britishness. Finally, this thesis charts the construction of an apparatus of drug control from the 1920s, analysing the manner in which this regulatory system was operationalised at ground-level in the capital by its various interlocutors - principally the Metropolitan Police - and detailing how these practices became bound up within the institutional politics of law enforcement. The regulation of the London drug culture, I argue, was productive: both of official knowledge regarding the phenomenon, and of new identities and ways of being. In this study, then, the London drug culture is conceived of as a prism through which the historian might trace the formation of British modernities in this period.

Abstract:
The thesis is an examination and discussion of the responses of British governments to developments in labour and socialist organisations between 1916 and 1926. The first chapter is concerned with the growing recognition of the increased power of labour under the conditions of modern war. Yet governments, it is argued, failed to develop a coherent labour policy and often acted in a confused and contradictory manner. The second chapter begins with an analysis of the post war crisis when many politicians began to regard revolution as a real possibility. They developed two agencies, the Special Branch and the Supply and Transport Organisation in order to deal with the situation. It is argued that in its original form the latter was not only costly but politically dangerous and ineffective. Later developments were not only cheaper but based on a more sophisticated understanding of the political strengths of a modern state. The third chapter is concerned with the responses of British socialists to the state. It includes some discussion of theoretical influences, an examination of the attempts of the Communist Party to implement Lenin's teachings on state and revolution, and a discussion of the first Labour Government in respect of the implications for socialist strategies with regard to the state. The final chapter is concerned to argue that while superior organisation and resources played their part in the Government's victory in the General Strike, it was Baldwin's political manoeuvres which were the most important element of the campaign. In conclusion there is some discussion of attempts which have been made to characterise the development of the British state in this period. The reality, it is argued, was far more prosaic than many accounts would suggest. Politicians achieved the stability they sought but they did so not by dramatic innovation but by constant political endeavor based on marginal readjustment and this reapplication of traditional themes and structures.

Abstract:
Parlamentinės demokratinės santvarkos laikotarpiu 1920 – 1926 m. Lietuvos politinės partijos vaidino itin reikšmingą vaidmenį šalies politiniame gyvenime. Jos aktyviai dalyvavo sprendžiant valstybės egzistencijai ir jos suverenitetui išsaugoti gyvybiškai svarbius uždavinius – tarptautinio pripažinimo išgavimą, santykių su kitomis valstybėmis užmezgimą, šalies užsienio politikos gairių nustatymą. Tačiau gausioje istoriografijoje daugiausia analizuota Vyriausybės vykdyta užsienio politika. Partijų nuostatos dažniausiai likdavo nuošalyje, nurodant, kad partinę poziciją atspindi Vyriausybės, kurią partija arba partijų koalicija sudaro, vykdomas užsienio politikos kursas. Tiek politinę programą formuojančios valdančiosios, tiek ir opozicinės partijos, darė didžiulę įtaką Valstybei, koregavo Lietuvos geopolitinę orientaciją. Dėl to, siekiant jog parlamentinės demokratijos laikotarpio Lietuvos užsienio politikos samprata būtų visavertė magistriniame darbe analizuojamos įtakingiausių Lietuvos politinių partijų: krikščionių demokratų, valstiečių liaudininkų, socialdemokratų ir tautininkų užsienio politikos nuostatos 1920 – 1926 m. Lenkijos ir Lietuvos valstybių atkūrimo programų susikirtimas sukėlęs teritorinį konfliktą tarp abiejų valstybių komplikavo Lietuvos tarptautinę padėtį bei smarkiai iškreipė natūralią šalies užsienio politikos raidą. Most influential Lithuanian political parties: Christian Democrats, Party of the People’s Socialists, Social Democratic Party and Nationalist Party played important role in the formation of Lithuanian foreign policy guidelines during the period of parliamentary government in Lithuania. Nevertheless in historiography the role of them usually was ignored and the main focus was on the Government’s foreign policy conception. In our work: “The Foreign Policy Attitudes of Lithuanian Political Parties in 1920 – 1926” we had tried to analyze the foreign policy programs of most influential parties and to identify their impact on Governmental foreign policy concept. Political parties and their leaders had to solve complicated territorial issues that inflamed international status of Lithuania. The dispute of Vilnius imposed an intolerable burden on young state, which threatened to cloud relations with its more powerful neighbors. Although Lithuanian society looked to Poland as to the worst enemy of the nation, the long sighted leaders of Christian Democrats and People’s Socialists through the mediation of Great Western Powers tried to solve territorial conflict with southern neighbor and retain historic capital of the country by peaceful measures. But both states have had to reconcile so called project of Hymans mainly because of resistance of Nationalist and Social Democratic parties, was rejected. Abstract:
This Critical Review discusses the significance of the author’s published works and their impact on the history of the emergence of British television between 1926 and 1936. Although events in television within this period have since been well-documented, the related debates have tended to be specialist in scope and restricted to technology-centric or institution-centric viewpoints. Within this period of complex, rapid technological change, the author’s published works introduce the principle of embracing multiple disciplines for comparative analysis. The author’s application of that principle opens up long-established views for further debate and provides a re-assessment of early British television within a broader context. The rewards of this approach are a view of events that not only avoids nationalistic bias and restrictions of a single institutional viewpoint, but also tackles the complex inter-dependencies of technology, of service provision and of content creation. These published works draw attention to the revolutionary improvements that enabled the BBC’s 1936 service and the re-definition of television, yet also emphasise the significance of the previous television broadcast services. The most important innovation within these works has been the author’s discovery and in-depth study of artefacts from that earlier period. His recovery, analysis and presentation of video recordings of historic early television from 1927-1935 is original and remains unique. It has had a significant impact on the field of Media Archaeology, where Ernst considers the book Restoring Baird’s Image as a ‘seminal’ work and the overall restoration project ‘a brilliant case of “Digital Humanities” research’ (Appendix 2). The author’s curation of content from the period 1927-1935 enhances our understanding of a time where previously no direct television footage was thought to exist. The author extends his forensic-level investigative ‘hands-on’ techniques from this recovery to the analysis of the surviving artefacts from the time of John Logie Baird’s claimed first demonstration of television in 1926. The results clarify not only the functions of the equipment but also the circumstances and validity of the event, and hence its true place in the history of television.

Abstract:
General von Seeckt was made head of the Reichswehr (Chef der Heeresleitung) as a result of the Kapp-Luttwitz Putsch (1920). We have traced how the Freikorps formations were formed, and became a two-edged sword, both negative and positive in effect. How did von Seeckt cope with the numerous crises? What was his concept of managing the various domestic crises and the burden of the Versailles Treaty? Since there has been much research in this period I have tried to put more light on lesser known facts and persons, especially Wolfgang Kapp, his collaborators, emphasizing the part played by Russo-German military relations, and Mentzel's mission to Russia.

This work is about foundation and development of the Communist Party of Pernambuco, between 1922-1926. In these discussions are the economic and political changes of the nascent Republic, in the Brazil. The Northeast was important as privileged place in construction of classes. The exchange of experience and the economic inequalities highlight this point. Communist Party was the first to have national viability. On the other hand, lawlessness and political persecution had been present, in those first moments. The universe of theoretical conceptions included news perspectives for workers.

Warnock, Barbara Susan. "The first bailout : the financial reconstruction of Austria, 1922-1926." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2016. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/237/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the League of Nations’ project for Austrian financial reconstruction 1922- 1926. By 1922, the First Austrian Republic (1918-1938) was experiencing enormous problems, including hyperinflation. Little confidence existed that the country could survive as a unified and independent entity. In this context, the Economic and Financial Organisation (EFO) of the League designed a financial reconstruction scheme for Austria. The scheme was the first such project carried out by an international institution and this thesis explores its genesis, attributes and impacts. This thesis argues that this programme came into existence less, as is sometimes argued, because of the work of idealistic internationalists at the League of Nations, and more because the governments, diplomats and officials of certain powers, particularly France, but also Britain and others, wished to see Austria survive because they regarded its continued existence to be an important part of upholding post-war European order, and furthering their interests and diplomatic strategies. Furthermore, the support of financial elites was crucial in successfully launching the scheme, and representatives of these groups were centrally involved in the design and implementation of the programme via the EFO’s Financial Committee. The programme reflected their beliefs about the proper operation of finance and economics, and introduced to Austria orthodox financial measures that had a mixed, in many ways negative, effect on the Austrian economy and on Austrian prospects for stability. This thesis explores the often neglected political and social impact of the programme, such as the detrimental effects of unemployment, and the tensions generated between central government and the regional governments of Austria, particularly the City Government of Vienna. Ultimately, a programme that was created as an extension of the peace settlement worked in some respects to exacerbate the difficulties that would lead to crisis in Austria and in Europe in the 1930s.

Full text
Abstract:
American poet Frank O'Hara (1926-1966) is associated with the New York School poets such as John Ashbery and Kenneth Koch. After attending Harvard, they moved to New York where they met the painters of the New York School. Hired by the Museum of Modem Art, O'Hara became the center of this community of artists: once a curator, he organized key exhibitions of American painting in the 1950s and 60s. This PhD dissertation focuses on lyricism in O'Hara's poetry so as to account for thé engagement of his work with literature, painting and music. After World War 11, at a lime when traditional conceptions of subjectivity fait apart, when writing becomes "a moral crisis," O'Hara elaborates a "materialistic lyricism," resorting to the prosaic world of things to express a reticent inner self. O'Hara has often been said to be the painters' poet: the post-war ontological crisis is also at the heart of Abstract Expressionism. The relationship between O'Hara and the painters should nevertheless be qualified: for the first "heroic" generation of the New York School, lyricism meant the full and immediate expression of the self on the canvas. For O'Hara, it cannot be so coherent or heart-whole: poetry cannot be lyrical without the saving graces of irony. Lyricism should then be understood as a mode of articulating a problematic identity never fully revealed. The model of identity that O'Hara's work aspires to is to be found in music. However, the poet knows that his lyrical ambitions cannot be fulfilled by language alone: singing remains a mere ideal, the song is both the desire and regret of the poem. Lyricism is then the painful awareness that music is always beyond the call of words

Abstract:
Art History
Ph.D.
This dissertation examines the differing responses to modernity in the visual culture of Madrid from 1926-1936. I trace the debates generated by the anticipation, apprehension, or expectations to the ongoing processes of modernization. My work is guided by the understanding that the metropolis is both a physical and psychological space, and that the resulting visual culture is imbued with those experiences of Madrid. Thus, the questions and concerns of the period are instilled in the visual arts, regardless if the city is explicitly represented in them or not. Although Madrid was not a model of industrialization, the city’s inhabitants acknowledged and reacted to the attempts to modernize the city as well as the ongoing political and social transformations. My study examines diverse media alongside the popular press of the period. By examining individual works of art alongside periodicals, my dissertation reveals the relationship between the thriving popular culture, the elite culture, and an emergent mass culture. In the first chapter, I introduce how these different kinds of culture have been defined, as well as Madrid’s current place within art historical scholarship. In the second chapter, I look at how the construction of the Gran Vía avenue was presented in the press to investigate the social effects of the reorganization of Madrid’s center. The third chapter analyzes the development of the public persona of writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna and how he used his image as an advertisement for modernity. In the fourth chapter, I examine the film Esencia de verbena, directed by Ernesto Giménez Caballero. The film pictured Madrid’s traditions but also invoked Surrealist aesthetics. By bringing together ideas of international modernity and local folklore Giménez Caballero showed how popular culture was a useful resource for the local avant-garde. In the final chapter, I focus on the sculpture of artist Alberto Sánchez to demonstrate how his seemingly depoliticized artworks actually engaged in a critical discourse about the economic and social conditions resulting from modernization. This dissertation challenge the current understanding of the distinctions between the popular, elite, and mass cultures in Spain. Such categories cannot fully express the complexity of the visual culture of Madrid in the 1920s and 1930s. Instead, I argue that Madrid’s inhabitants negotiated and mediated modernity by blurring the boundaries and exploring the interconnections between these different cultures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A few days after signing the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918, British forces occupied the Ottoman province of Mosul, after which its future was a central factor in the formulation of post-war British policy in the region. In general, the studies of this period suffer from discontinuity and lack of cohesion. Previous publications have given incomplete attention to the full range of factors that determined the decision to link the Mosul vilayet with Iraq. Through an exhaustive use of British official archives, this study attempts to examine the factors influencing the British decision-makers to support the inclusion of the Mosul vilayet within Iraq, rather than its restoration to the new Turkish republic or the establishment of a separate Kurdish state in the vilayet. This study confirms that the British wanted access to the potential oilfields of the Mosul vilayet. However, it argues that the Mosul oilfields were not a major element in British policy. It explores the contribution of all of the commercial, political, military and strategic arguments considered by British policy-makers. It concludes that the geo-strategic, economic and ethnic position of southern Kurdistan and the northern districts were the critical influences on both British policy and the League of Nations’ decision to include the Mosul vilayet in Iraq. The inclusion of Mosul guaranteed Arabian-British interests in the area, enabling Britain to reduce its costs and conduct its territorial policy in Iraq. British policy towards the Mosul question succeeded in achieving its primary objectives in establishing the northern frontier of Iraq.

Abstract: The present research intents to demonstrate that the performance of the Companhia Negra de Revista (1926-1927), a black theater group of the vaudeville genre, despite it was not openly organized as political movement, was a phenomenon of resistance to the black reality of the period. And that produced agency to the brazilian blacks in the diverse sectors of the society. As part of a global black uprising movement that put the black in prominence, it showed another way the "official" history. That in fact it showed that black people was never passive to its reality, as some canons of the social sciences used to inform. Thus, we will rethink the places occupied by black people at a time that will allow us to encompass the period from the monarchy to the republic with the post-abolition (1888) until the First Republic (1889-1930). More specifically analyzing how the development of black theater in this period was undertaken. Starting from the presupposition of the existence of places symbolically constructed. These "symbolic places" were sustained from the position that individuals held in society, supported by racialist concepts that prevailed in Brazil during 350 years of enslavement and after. Hence, the problem of "whiteness, in which the belief of a white supremacy that invisibilizes, is reached a means to subjugate black people. So we start from the hypothesis that in fact the black movements around the world and the black manifestations in Brazil happen in an integrated way. To do so, we will address three insurgent black movements - harlem reinassance, pan-africanism and negritude movement - in the first half of the twentieth century that had great effects on black literary and artistic production

Abstract:

Abstract:
Religious tourism, a steadily growing phenomenon throughout the 20th century, was incentivated especially during the first half of the century by the Catholic Church which, using it as a strategy of afirmation, organized a european movement that mobilized, and still mobilizes, millions of participants. The pilgrims of the so called “Peregrinações Alentejanas”, even when recruited by local bishopries, integrated a larger entourage willing to follow the travel plan previously established by the religious hierarchy. These pilgrimages convey a good example of the religious tourism expansion as seen in the multitudinary influx of peoples in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, in France, favouring an experience of transnationality and european interknowledge besides the natural geographical mobility.

Full text
Abstract:
Efforts to abate Willamette River pollution between 1926 and 1962 centered on a struggle between abatement advocates and the two primary polluters in the watershed, the City of Portland and the pulp and paper industry. Throughout the twentieth century, the Willamette was by far the most heavily populated and industrialized watershed in Oregon. Like many other of the world's rivers, the Willamette was an integral part of municipal and industrial waste removal systems. As such, the main stem of the river carried the combined wastes from sewage outfalls serving hundreds of thousands of people and millions of gallons daily of pulp and paper making effluents. Exacerbating the impacts of these pollutants on the Willamette were unavoidable geologic and hydrologic constraints impacting the river's flow and, therefore, the river's ability to dilute wastes. As the pollution load in the Willamette River increased throughout the twentieth century, accustomed activities such as recreation, sports fishing, and commercial fishing, were constrained. The polluted water also threatened potential uses of the river, such as tourism and expanded recreation after World War II. To address these concerns, beginning in 1926 clean streams advocates created ad hoc groups of public health experts, sanitary engineers, conservationists, sportsmen, and others to pressure Portland officials and industry representatives to cease polluting the river. In November 1938, continued activism and lobbying from these groups led to the passage of a citizen's initiative creating the Oregon State Sanitary Authority (OSSA). From 1939 to 1962, the OSSA took the lead in the water pollution abatement issue and realized some limited successes including pushing Portland and other cities to build sewage treatment plants and regulating pulp and paper mill discharges. However, in spite of these accomplishments, the issue of water quality grew more complex and difficult through the 1950s, as reflected in Tom McCall's November 1962 television documentary Pollution in Paradise.

Abstract:
This work proposes an analysis of the literary text in novels of the nineteen seventies by writers who opted for a new form of prose: the traditional linearity gave way to narrative discontinuity, the oneness of the plot was replaced by a variety of elements, stylistic coherence disappeared in favour of a multiple novel. The six chapters treat the different methods involving this revolution: graphical variations and paratextual elements included in text, narrative breaks, digressions and inserted histories, mixture of styles and genders, and structural rules destroying the fluidity of the text. The examples are provided by some contemporary novels of three European writers : Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann ; The Castle of the Crossed Destinies, Invisible Cities and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino ; W or the Memory of Childhood and Life: A User's Manual by Georges Perec. Though conceived in different geographical and cultural contexts, these works present concrete analogies and, above all, a common tendency to the narrative, formal and stylistic deconstruction of text

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout this thesis, we are concerned with filling some of the gaps in the literature concerning parametric and semiparametric Whittle estimation of long-run and/or cyclical persistence in economic time series. In Chapter 2, we consider local Whittle estimation, and without relying on the assumption of a linear model, we establish sufficient conditions for consistency and provide expansions and rate of convergence for the estimator. In Chapter 3, we apply the results of Chapter 2 to examine the local Whittle estimator for the signal plus noise model and some special cases of it: structural model, nonlinear transformations of a Gaussian process, and long memory stochastic volatility model. Under these specifications, we establish the asymptotic properties of the estimator, and raise several issues concerning its rate of convergence and finite sample bias. In Chapter 4, we employ Monte-Carlo simulations to investigate the finite sample properties of the local Whittle estimator under the linear and nonlinear specifications of Chapters 2 and 3. Furthermore, we apply local Whittle estimation to expected and realized inflation rates, nominal and real interest rates, and transformations of foreign exchange rate returns, in order to assess their long-run persistence and address several issues that have appeared in the empirical literature. Finally, Chapter 5 presents two testing procedures, based on the parametric Whittle method, for the null hypothesis of no persistent component in the data. We derive the asymptotic properties of our test statistics, and moreover introduce and validate a bootstrap scheme for calculating their critical values. A Monte-Carlo study of the finite sample performance of our testing procedures, and an empirical application on the growth rate of industrial production and unemployment rate are also included.

MacDonald, Kirsty A. "Spectral ambiguities : the tradition of psychosomatic supernaturalism in Scottish fiction." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2005. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1926/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to prove that there exists in Scottish literature a previously undervalued, or indeed, overlooked tradition of ‘psychosomatic supernaturalism’, which like other literary traditions, refers to an evolving constellation of texts with similar themes, motifs and techniques. It is widely accepted that the continued presence of supernatural elements is a common feature in Scottish literature. However, the modifier ‘psychosomatic’, a term borrowed from the field of psychiatry, designates those specific supernatural events or beings around which accumulate sustained doubt as to whether their origins are in the actual or the psychological. This supernatural/psychological tension – discussed but rarely analysed closely by critics – occurs primarily in fiction throughout the national literary history from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present day. The evocation of this tension is a subversive strategy, challenging realism and its associated modes of representation. Perhaps the most renowned example of the tension occurs in James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824). However, Hogg wrote a number of equally significant psychosomatic supernatural tales, including the novel The Three Perils of Woman (1823), and the short story ‘The Brownie of the Black Haggs’ (1828). The start of the nineteenth century marks the establishment of psychiatry, and the underlining of the distinction between madness and supernatural forces, a demarcation that was previously hazy. This was something Hogg was fully aware of, and as a writer with a documented interest in the supernatural and folk tradition, and in evolving views on mental illness, his work forms the starting point for the thesis. The development of this tradition throughout the nineteenth century is subsequently traced. During this time ‘social realism’ is a prominent mode in fiction. There are, however, critical and subversive exceptions to this in the work of writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Margaret Oliphant and J.M. Barrie. The thesis considers their work, and then examines how this tradition is manifested during the period now referred to by critics as the Scottish Renaissance. Late twentieth-century manifestations of the tradition are then analysed, against a background of the increasing dominance of realism and its associated metanarratives in Scottish fiction, and mass media contexts such as film and television.

Abstract:
This study investigated and compared the quality and nature of Arabic and English speaking preschools' curricula in the State of Qatar. To the researcher's knowledge, this is the first study to investigate, compare and assess the preschool curricula currently provided in the State of Qatar. Four major research tools were used including structured teacher's questionnaire, structured teachers' interviews, structured classroom observations and structured mother's questionnaire. The teachers' questionnaire sample consisted of 107 teachers, 81 Arabic school teachers and 26 English school teachers. The classroom observations sample consisted of 17 preschools, 9 Arabic speaking schools and 8 English speaking schools. Teachers' interviews sample consisted of 18 Arabic speaking preschool teachers and 16 English speaking preschool teachers. The mother's questionnaire sample consisted of 50 mothers randomly selected from 17 Arabic speaking schools. Study findings included the following: (1) the English preschools had many advantages over the Arabic preschools in terms of all the seven domains ofthe teacher's questionnaire.(2) the Arabic speaking preschools are of lower quality in terms of all domains of the teacher's interview. These include: teachers' qualifications, experience, duties, wages, teacher-child ratio, type of curriculum, teaching approaches, appropriateness of the curriculum. (3) In terms of classroom observations, the overall mean EeERS score for the English speaking preschool sample was 6.00 compared to 4.8 for the Arabic speaking classrooms sample. (4) Qatari mothers of Arabic preschools children preferred the developmental goals rather than traditional goals to be part of their young children's education but within the Islamic religious and moral values. The findings lead to the conclusion that the Arabic speaking preschool curriculum in Qatar suffered from obvious drawbacks in all the domains studied which required serious consideration from the Ministry of Education and other institutions and organisations interested in early childhood education.

Abstract:
In September 2005, a 60-km-long dyke intruded the Dabbahu segment of the Nubia-Arabia plate boundary (Afar, Ethiopia), marking the beginning of an ongoing rifting episode. Continued activity has been monitored using Satellite Radar Interferometry, GPS instruments and seismometers deployed around the rift in response to the initial intrusion. These data show that a sequence of 12 new dyke intrusions have reintruded the central and southern section of the Dabbahu segment. Modelling of InSAR data indicates the dykes were between 0.5 and 3 m wide, up to 10 km long and confined to the upper 10 km of crust. Seismicity data imply that the dykes were probably fed from a source near the centre of the segment. The new dykes are concentrated in areas where the 2005 dyke did not produce significant opening, implying that residual tensile tectonic stresses are higher in this location and are focusing the later intrusions. Geodetic data, which quantify the location and extension occurring in each of the events, allows the identification of regions where tensile stress has been increased. Here I demonstrate for the first time the high probability of a link involving stress transfer and dyke intrusions. Since the September 2005 intrusion, background displacement rates are significantly larger than the average secular divergence between Nubia and Arabia. Some of this deformation can be explained using viscoelastic models, which suggest an elastic crustal thickness of 13 km and upper mantle viscosity of 10 ^18.5 Pas. The presence of multiple magmatic sources around the rift zone, however, cause large residuals between the data and model suggesting that viscoelastic relaxation alone cannot account for the observed deformation. It is likely that, with a continued magma supply, dykes will continue to be intruded until the tectonic stress is fully relieved with more eruptions as the rifting episode is concluded.

Gattei, Lorenzo <1978&gt. "A study on the fluid dynamics of domestic Gas burners." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2009. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/1926/.

Abstract:
Domestic gas burners are investigated experimentally and numerically in order to further understand the fluid dynamics processes that drive the cooking appliance performances. In particular, a numerical simulation tool has been developed in order to predict the onset of two flame instabilities which may deteriorate the performances of the burner: the flame back and flame lift. The numerical model has been firstly validated by comparing the simulated flow field with a data set of experimental measurements. A prediction criterion for the flame back instability has been formulated based on isothermal simulations without involving the combustion modelization. This analysis has been verified by a Design Of Experiments investigation performed on different burner prototype geometries. On the contrary, the formulation of a prediction criterion regarding the flame lift instability has required the use of a combustion model in the numerical code. In this analysis, the structure and aerodynamics of the flame generated by a cooking appliance has thus been characterized by experimental and numerical investigations, in which, by varying the flow inlet conditions, the flame behaviour was studied from a stable reference case toward a complete blow-out.

Abstract:
This work aims to investigate the early writings in Sérgio Buarque de Holanda\'s literary criticism, covering some of his articles written between 1920 and 1926. It is important to remember that in 1921 the young Holanda affiliated himself with the incipient Modernismo movement, devoting his critic activities to the service of the renewing modernist cause. This adhesion was fruitful, defining a relationship that reached the dimension of an intense militancy (1922-1923) and which, between 1924-1926, revealed a mature critic capable of determining the course of Mordernismo. This research seeks to analyze articles, essays and reviews, striving to articulate a reading that lies close to the text, following its movements and particularities. Using this approach strategy, we aim to understand Holanda\'s criticism\'s themes and procedures in relationship to the context in which these texts were inserted. Ultimately, in doing so, we will outline some of the most remarkable traits of Holanda\'s intellectual trajectory.

Abstract:
Parque Ibirapuera was the first metropolitan park in São Paulo. It was conceived as a modern space, destined to offer leisure and culture to the population. The park was projected to be part of São Paulo´s 4th Centenary celebrations, but its story involves oppositions that have been omitted in further debate. This work displaces the usual focus on the commemorative axle, in order to highlight the conflicts involved in the creation of the park – mainly related to its program. By the time of Ibirapuera´s implantation, in the 50´s, the construction of its pavilions was widely questioned by a group of urban planners, journalists and intellectuals who wanted an exclusively green park for that area. Nevertheless, this debate has never been discussed by the large bibliography already produced about the park, even though those conflicts seems to outpoint a battlefield between the social groups that acted in the decisions of the park´s configuration.
