Full textThe second Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania 1923 - 1926 Raimundas Trinkūnas Summary Lithuania, declared its independency in 1918, turned to the democracy way. Lithuanians were able to elect representatives directly to Seimas, who represented their interests. Historians started studying more about Constituve Seimas work, because this Seimas put the base for the further life of the juridical state existence, the III Seimas was researched quite in an intensive way as well because of its works and the revolution carried out by the president A. Smetona. The II Seimas got quite little attention. Due to that, it is of present interest to historians to fill the gaps in the researches of parliamentarism. The aims of this work – to analyze the movement and achieved works of the II Seimas. These tasks are raised in order to reach the aim: 1) to produce the review of the II Seimas Eve political situation; 2) to analyze the II Seimas election course and results; 3) to present the quantitive and qualitive indexes of Seimas, and: 4) to discuss about Seimas achieved works in inner (political, cultural, economical and national sphere) and foreign policy. From the 78 Seimas members in the First Seimas (1922-1923) – 38 members were Christian Democrats (position), and the others were opposition fractions. Full textMost influential Lithuanian political parties: Christian Democrats, Party of the People’s Socialists, Social Democratic Party and Nationalist Party played important role in the formation of Lithuanian foreign policy guidelines during the period of parliamentary government in Lithuania. Nevertheless in historiography the role of them usually was ignored and the main focus was on the Government’s foreign policy conception. In our work: “The Foreign Policy Attitudes of Lithuanian Political Parties in 1920 – 1926” we had tried to analyze the foreign policy programs of most influential parties and to identify their impact on Governmental foreign policy concept. Political parties and their leaders had to solve complicated territorial issues that inflamed international status of Lithuania. The dispute of Vilnius imposed an intolerable burden on young state, which threatened to cloud relations with its more powerful neighbors. Although Lithuanian society looked to Poland as to the worst enemy of the nation, the long sighted leaders of Christian Democrats and People’s Socialists through the mediation of Great Western Powers tried to solve territorial conflict with southern neighbor and retain historic capital of the country by peaceful measures. But both states have had to reconcile so called project of Hymans mainly because of resistance of Nationalist and Social Democratic parties, was rejected.
This work is about foundation and development of the Communist Party of Pernambuco, between 1922-1926. In these discussions are the economic and political changes of the nascent Republic, in the Brazil. The Northeast was important as privileged place in construction of classes. The exchange of experience and the economic inequalities highlight this point. Communist Party was the first to have national viability. On the other hand, lawlessness and political persecution had been present, in those first moments. The universe of theoretical conceptions included news perspectives for workers.

Full textAmerican poet Frank O'Hara (1926-1966) is associated with the New York School poets such as John Ashbery and Kenneth Koch. After attending Harvard, they moved to New York where they met the painters of the New York School. Hired by the Museum of Modem Art, O'Hara became the center of this community of artists: once a curator, he organized key exhibitions of American painting in the 1950s and 60s. This PhD dissertation focuses on lyricism in O'Hara's poetry so as to account for thé engagement of his work with literature, painting and music. After World War 11, at a lime when traditional conceptions of subjectivity fait apart, when writing becomes "a moral crisis," O'Hara elaborates a "materialistic lyricism," resorting to the prosaic world of things to express a reticent inner self. O'Hara has often been said to be the painters' poet: the post-war ontological crisis is also at the heart of Abstract Expressionism. The relationship between O'Hara and the painters should nevertheless be qualified: for the first "heroic" generation of the New York School, lyricism meant the full and immediate expression of the self on the canvas. For O'Hara, it cannot be so coherent or heart-whole: poetry cannot be lyrical without the saving graces of irony. Lyricism should then be understood as a mode of articulating a problematic identity never fully revealed. The model of identity that O'Hara's work aspires to is to be found in music. However, the poet knows that his lyrical ambitions cannot be fulfilled by language alone: singing remains a mere ideal, the song is both the desire and regret of the poem. Lyricism is then the painful awareness that music is always beyond the call of words

This dissertation examines the differing responses to modernity in the visual culture of Madrid from 1926-1936. I trace the debates generated by the anticipation, apprehension, or expectations to the ongoing processes of modernization. My work is guided by the understanding that the metropolis is both a physical and psychological space, and that the resulting visual culture is imbued with those experiences of Madrid. Thus, the questions and concerns of the period are instilled in the visual arts, regardless if the city is explicitly represented in them or not. Although Madrid was not a model of industrialization, the city’s inhabitants acknowledged and reacted to the attempts to modernize the city as well as the ongoing political and social transformations. My study examines diverse media alongside the popular press of the period. By examining individual works of art alongside periodicals, my dissertation reveals the relationship between the thriving popular culture, the elite culture, and an emergent mass culture. In the first chapter, I introduce how these different kinds of culture have been defined, as well as Madrid’s current place within art historical scholarship. In the second chapter, I look at how the construction of the Gran Vía avenue was presented in the press to investigate the social effects of the reorganization of Madrid’s center. The third chapter analyzes the development of the public persona of writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna and how he used his image as an advertisement for modernity. In the fourth chapter, I examine the film Esencia de verbena, directed by Ernesto Giménez Caballero. The film pictured Madrid’s traditions but also invoked Surrealist aesthetics. By bringing together ideas of international modernity and local folklore Giménez Caballero showed how popular culture was a useful resource for the local avant-garde. In the final chapter, I focus on the sculpture of artist Alberto Sánchez to demonstrate how his seemingly depoliticized artworks actually engaged in a critical discourse about the economic and social conditions resulting from modernization. This dissertation challenge the current understanding of the distinctions between the popular, elite, and mass cultures in Spain. Such categories cannot fully express the complexity of the visual culture of Madrid in the 1920s and 1930s. Instead, I argue that Madrid’s inhabitants negotiated and mediated modernity by blurring the boundaries and exploring the interconnections between these different cultures.

Abstract: The present research intents to demonstrate that the performance of the Companhia Negra de Revista (1926-1927), a black theater group of the vaudeville genre, despite it was not openly organized as political movement, was a phenomenon of resistance to the black reality of the period. And that produced agency to the brazilian blacks in the diverse sectors of the society. As part of a global black uprising movement that put the black in prominence, it showed another way the "official" history. That in fact it showed that black people was never passive to its reality, as some canons of the social sciences used to inform. Thus, we will rethink the places occupied by black people at a time that will allow us to encompass the period from the monarchy to the republic with the post-abolition (1888) until the First Republic (1889-1930). More specifically analyzing how the development of black theater in this period was undertaken. Starting from the presupposition of the existence of places symbolically constructed. These "symbolic places" were sustained from the position that individuals held in society, supported by racialist concepts that prevailed in Brazil during 350 years of enslavement and after. Hence, the problem of "whiteness, in which the belief of a white supremacy that invisibilizes, is reached a means to subjugate black people. So we start from the hypothesis that in fact the black movements around the world and the black manifestations in Brazil happen in an integrated way. To do so, we will address three insurgent black movements - harlem reinassance, pan-africanism and negritude movement - in the first half of the twentieth century that had great effects on black literary and artistic production

Full textThis work proposes an analysis of the literary text in novels of the nineteen seventies by writers who opted for a new form of prose: the traditional linearity gave way to narrative discontinuity, the oneness of the plot was replaced by a variety of elements, stylistic coherence disappeared in favour of a multiple novel. The six chapters treat the different methods involving this revolution: graphical variations and paratextual elements included in text, narrative breaks, digressions and inserted histories, mixture of styles and genders, and structural rules destroying the fluidity of the text. The examples are provided by some contemporary novels of three European writers : Malina by Ingeborg Bachmann ; The Castle of the Crossed Destinies, Invisible Cities and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino ; W or the Memory of Childhood and Life: A User's Manual by Georges Perec. Though conceived in different geographical and cultural contexts, these works present concrete analogies and, above all, a common tendency to the narrative, formal and stylistic deconstruction of text

Full textThis work aims to investigate the early writings in Sérgio Buarque de Holanda\'s literary criticism, covering some of his articles written between 1920 and 1926. It is important to remember that in 1921 the young Holanda affiliated himself with the incipient Modernismo movement, devoting his critic activities to the service of the renewing modernist cause. This adhesion was fruitful, defining a relationship that reached the dimension of an intense militancy (1922-1923) and which, between 1924-1926, revealed a mature critic capable of determining the course of Mordernismo. This research seeks to analyze articles, essays and reviews, striving to articulate a reading that lies close to the text, following its movements and particularities. Using this approach strategy, we aim to understand Holanda\'s criticism\'s themes and procedures in relationship to the context in which these texts were inserted. Ultimately, in doing so, we will outline some of the most remarkable traits of Holanda\'s intellectual trajectory.

Full textParque Ibirapuera was the first metropolitan park in São Paulo. It was conceived as a modern space, destined to offer leisure and culture to the population. The park was projected to be part of São Paulo´s 4th Centenary celebrations, but its story involves oppositions that have been omitted in further debate. This work displaces the usual focus on the commemorative axle, in order to highlight the conflicts involved in the creation of the park mainly related to its program. By the time of Ibirapuera´s implantation, in the 50´s, the construction of its pavilions was widely questioned by a group of urban planners, journalists and intellectuals who wanted an exclusively green park for that area. Nevertheless, this debate has never been discussed by the large bibliography already produced about the park, even though those conflicts seems to outpoint a battlefield between the social groups that acted in the decisions of the park´s configuration.
