Abstract:
This research was motivated by the establishment of the Steenkolen Maatschappij Parapattan (SMP) company which exploited the natural resources and human resources of the workers which caused a resistance. The purpose of this study is to describe the initial conditions of Teluk Bayur before the resistance in 1926 and to describe the forms of resistance in 1926. The type of research used in this research is historical research using heuristic methods, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that prior to the riots, SMP was established in 1912, which was the beginning of the riots that occurred in 1926. Dutch involvement extended to the government. In addition to exploiting coal, contracted workers were also exploited by doing hard labor in coal mines with disproportionate salaries until there was an action against a junior high school company in Teluk Bayur on the night of 6-7 November 1926. Sarekat Islam was considered a forum that initiated resistance so that SI was frozen by the Dutch after the incident.

The article presents the Slovenian reception of five major groups in American post-war poetry -the Formalists, the Confessionals, the Beats, the Black Mountain poets, and the New York School poets - as well as the reception of those prominent authors who cannot be classified in any of these groups. The analysis reveals which groups have attracted most interest of the Slovenian critics and translators, when was the peak of their reception, which methods of interpretation have been used by the Slovenian critics, and to what extent has their judgement about certain contemporary American authors gradually changed.

The Padang Panjang earthquake has become a major part of the Minang people's memory in recent times. Those born after the earthquake often remember their birthday, after the strong shaking that lasted for seven days. This paper is prepared based on historical methods, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The earthquake that occurred in January 1926 was based on records of reports of the impact of terrible damage. The tsunami, buildings were destroyed, roads were badly damaged, and rail transportation was damaged, not to mention the human casualties who died and were injured. After the damage caused by the earthquake, the Dutch colonial government intervened to provide assistance to earthquake victims. The government is also working hard to rebuild buildings from the rubble of destruction.

Abstract:
In this article, we analyse key policy documents on teacher quality produced by the OECD and the EU during the period 2005 to 2017 using an educational connoisseurship and criticism approach. The purpose of this article is to explore how Eisner’s concepts of educational connoisseurship and educational criticism can be understood and used to analyse educational policy, especially how teacher quality is discursively constructed in transnational authoritative texts on education policy. Eisner’s three aspects of criticism, description, interpretation and evaluation can be utilised in a differentiated critical approach to the analysis of transnational policy documents on education. While the critical descriptive discourse can be viewed as ‘identifying a simple relationship’ between social development and educational needs, the interpretative critical discourse can be regarded as ‘recognising the complexity’ of teachers’ tasks in changing societies and the critical evaluative discourse as ‘recognising and problematising contradictory interests’ that affect teachers’ work. We argue that the philosophical concepts of connoisseurship and criticism contribute to policy research by demonstrating that a multifaceted concept of teacher quality is needed to capture the complex nature of education.

Abstract:
Since Huntington proclaimed the political relevance of ‘civilizations’, the concept has been popular in political culture research. However, it lacks precision and is used inconsistently in interpreting global cultural (dis)similarities. This article aims to illustrate how these flaws can be avoided. First, the broad rubric of civilization is specified and differentiated from political culture. Then, the (dis)similarities of 39 countries in terms of political culture are visualized in a two-dimensional space using data from the World Values Survey (2005–08). The description of the countries’ configuration reveals a specific ‘liberal-democratic culture area’ and the configuration’s additional visual interpretation with both the civilization rubric and two of its core elements is more informative than the use of ‘civilization’ alone.

Abstract:
In his work titled ‘Dance Curves: On the Dances of Palucca’ (1926), Wassily Kandisky translates two postures of the German Expressionist choreographer Gret Palucca from photographs into line drawings. The drawings are a study, but they are neither pictorial, nor straightforwardly representational. Staging an encounter between Dance Curves and Hannah Arendt’s investigation into thinking as both an interrupted and interruptive activity, this essay argues for a poetics of appearance as it is constituted by nonconforming acts of critique.Negotiating conflicts that shape a politics of recognition for criticism which deliberately or implicitly refutes utility, I articulate a process of appearance of meaning with differential relation to modernist concerns for interpretation, dissenting from rationalist and objectivist traditions that have dominated theatre and performance criticism since the Enlightenment. What happens when I disavow the drawings from the images, remove them from the source? Perhaps in such a place, we might find critique as a process of deliberately mishandled translation, as an occupation of an idea shifted elsewhere, as a displacement of meaning. Appearance shapes itself around slippages of attention that depart from the work of performance. In this essay, I turn to how these slippages fold outwards from the encounter, to the political nexus between performance and its world. In Arendt, I locate a means through which forms of thinking rendered as criticism constitute a resistant poetics to normative modes of paying attention, operating beyond what Bojana Kunst calls ‘the ready-made possibilities of discourse’ (2015, 13) under neoliberalism, that is, the ‘pre-established models of criticality and reflexivity’ to which art and artistic subjectivity often partake (ibid.)

The scout movement rose to fame in the afdeling of Batipuh X and Priaman in the early 20th century. This paper is designed to analyze the presence of the scout movement and related matters. It had constituted a break with years of colonial era and pushed for an independent Indonesia, which they voiced directly from Padang Panjang. The movements they organized was from the protest movement to the formation of the Pendidikan Nasional Indonesia or more popularly known as the PNI Baru Hatta – Sjahrir. The paper is organized according to the standard historical method rules; heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The scout movement, it all started in Padang Panjang in 1924. The International Padvinders Organitatie, the El-Hilaal, the Hizbul Wathan, and the Kepanduan Indonesia Muslim (KIM) were around then. They were originally established in schools at the beginning of the 20th century who transformed into the political movement then. KIM, which turned into a political movement or known as PNI Baru, has changed the scouting paradigm, which so far has only been regarded as the extracurricular school activity.

Abstract:
This article discusses the history and contribution of the Sri Alam Dunia Grand Mosque in the spread of Islam in the Sipirok area, South Tapanuli. This study uses a qualitative research method with a historical approach. The historical approach has four writing steps, namely: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The Great Mosque of Sri Alam Dunia is a silent witness to the struggle of the Mandailing scholars in expanding the symbols of Islam in the South Tapanuli region. At first, the Sri Alam Dunia Mosque was a small surah that was used as a place to study religion. The central figures who contributed to the process of establishing this mosque were Sheikh Abdul Manan Siregar and the Muslims who live around the mosque. This mosque was built around 1926 AD and was completed in 1933 AD. The results of the research that the authors found were that the Sri Alam Dunia Mosque besides having a long history was also a socio-cultural center for the Sipirok community, both in ancient times and today. With these various functions, making the Sri Alam Dunia Mosque one of the icons of pride for Muslims in Sipirok.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt at an analysis of Andrzej Wajda's political films, Man of Marble, Man of Iron and Danton in a broad cultural and historical context. The manuscript is divided into five chapters. The first chapter, "The Political Film of Andrzej Wajda--Issues of Methodology", presents a theoretical basis for the discussion of political film. Bakhtin's dialogism complemented by linguistic pragmatics provides the methodology used in the thesis to illustrate the dialogical process of meaning formation in political films of Andrzej Wajda. Chapter two discusses Wajda as the carrier of the political message, while chapters three, four and five, respectively, contain the historical, the dramatis personae and the aesthetic discourses in the films under study.

Abstract:
This master's thesis seeks to establish a comparison between the lyrical work of the Austrian Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) and the Argentinean Alejandra Pizarnik (1936-1972). First, we draw from the similarities in the lives of both authors. Then, the survey of secondary literature shows that the two writers were the «black sheep» of their literary generation. Finally, our analysis focuses on the last phase of their lyrical production (1963-1966 for Bachmann; 1970-1972 for Pizarnik), most especially on two poems which are considered by the critics to be their «farewell» to poetry : «Keine Delikatessen» [No delicacies] by Bachmann (1963) and «En esta noche, en este mundo» [In this night, in this world] by Pizarnik (1971). We demonstrate that both poets show the same distrust of their medium, language, accompanied by a particular concern for silence, which appears in their respective poems both thematically and formally.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis traverses the complexities and entanglement of theoretical and practical processes in a Post-structural age. Through the deconstruction of stable systems of knowledge and thought, this age has become synonymous with uncertainty. In an attempt to navigate a time of continual change, Foucault proposes a toolkit. Foucault advocates deconstruction, critical engagement and reflection. In addition to these tools, this thesis moves through genealogical, mapping, archaeological and glass (blowing) methodologies. My practice cannot be separated from theory, it is excavated concurrently. Foucault, Derrida, Nietzsche, Deleuze and Guattari open up knowledge systems in an effort to uncover alternative thought trajectories and create a space in which complexity can exist. Knowledge circulating in this space is not fixed, it manifests in moments. My practical project, Fleeting Certainty, also aims to create an open space. It does not culminate in one, autonomous work, but is rather an archive of moments. Viewers will also be equipped with a toolkit of light and lenses with which to create moments of their own. Therefore moments will generate continuously. These theoretical and practical processes do not culminate in a coherent conclusion. There is a pause, a comma, but there are many more trajectories or lines to follow.

HALL, KENNETH ESTES. "THE FUNCTION OF CINEMA IN THE WORKS OF GUILLERMO CABRERA INFANTE AND MANUEL PUIG (CUBA, ARGENTINA)." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/188187.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the influence of film on the works and careers of Guillermo Cabrera Infante (Cuba, 1929- ) and Manuel Puig (Argentina, 1932- ). Emphasis is put on their critical views, fiction, and filmscripts. Generic, thematic, and technical questions concerning film and their works are discussed, without, however, an attempt at exhaustiveness. After an introduction in Chapter 1, the next chapter addresses the relationship of Cabrera to the film, a topic developed more fully in Chapter 3. As the critic of Un oficio del Siglo 20 (1973) and Arcadia todas las noches (1978), he is placed in the "auteurist" tradition, a view which he later modified. Chapter 3 further discusses his concept of film. The next two chapters concern his critical collections. Mythic, generic, and aesthetic areas are treated. The basis for a continuity with his major fiction is demonstrated. In Chapter 6, Vanishing Point (1969-70) is studied from generic and mythic perspectives. The filmscript is used in preference to the film, which severely revised it. The two major fictional works of Cabrera, Tres tristes tigres (1965), and La Habana para un Infante Difunto (1979), are analyzed in Chapters 7 and 8 with reference to filmic allusions, connections to his criticism, and technique. Generic continuity is demonstrated in both works, while Chapter 8 also concerns the mechanisms of parody and of "blasphemy" against the "temple" of film. The next chapter is a comparative overview of Puig and Cabrera. Common (and divergent) directorial and generic interests are discussed, as well as the influence of certain directors on the work of Puig. Molina, from El beso de la mujer arana (1976), is placed within a context of gay movie tastes. Chapter 10 is partially devoted to two filmscripts by Puig, La cara del villano and Recuerdo de Tijuana (originally published in 1980), the first as an adaptation of a literary work and the second as an example of film noir. The chapter also deals with Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), an adaptation of the novel by Puig. Chapter 11 briefly concludes the study.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Autobiography is a growing, but elusive literary genre. However, when texts are read as autobiographical – and thus as a form of self-representation – the theme of identity provides the reader with an interesting and useful method by which to approach it. In this study, two Afrikaans autobiographical texts are approached in a comparative manner, with the aim being to examine the writers’ representations of themselves. The texts studied are ’n Wonderlike geweld (2005) by Elsa Joubert, and ’n Ander tongval (2005) by Antjie Krog. Besides the autobiographical nature of these texts, the comparison is also based on: the writers’ status in the Afrikaans literary system, similarities beween them and their backgrounds, and the corresponding publication dates. The theoretical basis from where the concepts autobiography and identity are viewed is explained briefly. The emphasis falls on autobiography as a hybrid genre, that is defined mainly by how it is read. The use of identity as a reading strategy is suggested, with identity being understood as an unstable construction that changes constantly, depending on the context in which it is constructed. Consequently, the different identities according to which Joubert and Krog reveal themselves to the reader and the autobiographical forms through which they achieve this, are examined and discussed in separate chapters. Specific emphasis is placed on how they convey the spirit of the time and on the influence of the context in which the texts are published. Finally, the differences and similarities in the writers’ representation of themselves are summarised. In the end it emerges that the reading strategy focused on identity provides the reader with a useful approach to the study of texts in the autobiographical genre, since it is possible to successfully apply it to two texts with diverse autobiographical qualities. Furthermore, it becomes clear that the structure and style of these texts mirror the writer’s approach to identity to a great extent.

Phillips, Malcolm. "Experiment and representation : the domestic surreal in contemporary British and American poetry." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/14707.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to counter what I regard as premature and reductive formulations of a 'native' British postmodernism, I identify a specific tendency in contemporary writing which I name the domestic surreal, and which I trace through the poetry of John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Roy Fisher, Christopher Middleton, John Ash, Peter Didsbury and Ian McMillan. Through close reading and a comparative approach, I uncover key preoccupations with idiosyncratic perception, shared experience, urban space and poetic play. I also describe a network of allegiances and influence among these writers which reveals the domestic surreal to be one of the contemporary manifestations of an imaginative tradition which stretches back through the Surrealist and Cubist movements to Baudelaire and Rimbaud. For the poets of the domestic surreal, engagement with an aesthetic tradition is inextricably linked with their response to contemporary conditions. Drawing on dialectical and poststructuralist perspectives, I propose that the domestic surreal attempts to resist the constraints of social and aesthetic consensus in Britain and America in the period following the Second World War.

Rau, Asta. "Supervision : a Foucaultian exploration of institutional and interpersonal power relations between postgraduate supervisors, their students and the university domain." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003671.

Full text
Abstract:
Supervision is widely acknowledged as influencing the quality of postgraduate theses, and by association, of postgraduates. Despite this, publications on conducting research offer far less guidance on managing the supervision relationship than on the practicalities of producing a thesis. In-depth, qualitative supervision studies are few and fewer still examine power in the supervision relationship. Michel Foucault’s insights are used to explore the question: How do postgraduate supervisors and their Master’s students experience the supervision relationship and how are the dynamics of interpersonal and institutional power implicated in these relationships? Foucault argues that power relations always involve resistances; these function primarily through institutionalized discourses to produce different forms of knowledge, one form of which is identity or subjectivity. Accordingly, power relations are explored in terms of thesis-as-product, person-as-product and the impact of both on the mediation of knowledge in the educational domain. Four institutionalized discourses in the university domain are examined: · Commercial educational management discourse: targets academics through issues of quality assurance, throughput, publication, research productivity and funding. · Anarchic educational leadership discourse: integrates quantum principles with commercial demands, change management strategies and meaningful participation. · Humanistic discourse: favours a pastoral ethic and is person-centered. · Holistic discourse: cultivates ecological sensibility and values the interconnectedness of all aspects of being-in-the-world. Data collected in sixteen semi-structured interviews with three matched supervisor-student pairs selected from the humanities and education faculties of one South African university, are presented as case studies. Data analysis combines grounded theory techniques with selected aspects of Foucault’s methods. A conceptual model is devised to analyse how participants use resistance strategies to interface their autonomy and dependency with their expectations, abilities, and professional and pastoral care. The research yields rich data in which several thematic correlations in interpersonal and institutional power dynamics are grounded. These include: the significance of supervisor-student matching; links between expectations, abilities, the way participants negotiate power and the quality of professional and pastoral care they experience; the benefit of personal affinity to thesis-as-product and person-as-product; and the impact of commercial demands on participants’ power relations. Participants tend to reproduce the discourses in which they are embedded and adopt or adapt aspects of contesting discourses to this end. Potential avenues are identified for improving supervision practice and for further research.

Cruciani, Sante. "Saggio introduttivo. Critica del fordismo e dinamiche del potere nella ricerca transnazionale di Bruno Trentin (1926-2007)." In Studi e saggi, 15–47. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-5518-282-9.01.

Abstract:
The essay traces Bruno Trentin's political biography and intellectual research from a transnational perspective. Through the work notebooks (1953-1995), the diaries on the CGILGeneral Secretary (1988-1994), the activity in the European Parliament (1999-2004) and the following two years, the elaboration of The Freedom Comes First(2005) is rooted in a long term criticism against the subalternity of the communist and social-democratic culture to the Fordist model. It is also based on the necessity of a libertarian socialism, based on the centrality of the person and on the unavoidable link between work and knowledge. What stands outis the originality of Trentin's political thought, the intellectual circuit in which his research is developed and his vision of a federal Europe in the international system following the Cold War and the aftermath of September 11th, 2001.

Abstract:
Richard Bushman’s 2005 biography of Joseph Smith incorporated the findings of the New Mormon history. Bushman saw changes over time in Smith’s vision accounts and granted the critics that point, just not their interpretation that it meant Smith did not experience what he claimed. Bushman did not question whether Smith told the truth about his vision, only what truth he told he time he recorded it. Bushman’s Joseph Smith is therefore not the deceived or deceiving one of Fawn Brodie or Wesley Walters, but neither is he the simplified teenage prophet of the movies and manuals. Though initially barred from use in LDS religious education curriculum, provided the standard interpretation of Smith’s first vision adopted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by 2018. This was most evident in “First Vision Accounts” and Saints: The Standard of Truth, volume 1—products espoused and promoted by LDS leaders.

Abstract:
In the Introduction, the author proposes a mode of reading that would expose the misunderstanding that is constitutive of both the literary and the political. A reading of the figure of the “blind” reader in two primal, early modern scenes of reading taken up by Ricardo Piglia in his 2005 El último lector [The Last Reader] is then taken up, suggesting that the blind reader might be that reader who—desperately close to the text—is attuned to its marks of invisibility, to those elements of unreadability that serve as an aporetic demand for more (blind) reading. The motif of opacity, or invisibility, recurs throughout Anarchaeologies vis-à-vis a cluster of concepts—misunderstanding, error, equivocation—to which the author turns in order to imagine new interpretative possibilities not only within literary criticism, but within ethical and political thinking as well.

McVeigh, Margaret. "‘Talking about something much larger’: Script Development and Creating Metaphor and Meaning in Jocelyne Saab’s Dunia." In ReFocus: The Films of Jocelyne Saab, 159–73. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474480413.003.0011.

Abstract:
During her career, Jocelyne Saab was concerned with human issues, and the issue of Arab women in particular. In her films, Saab showed how Arab women have a restricted freedom and a limited independence because of society and traditions. They tend to experience issues such as marginalization, violence, male bullying and forced marriages. Based on that, Saab always tackled those issues in her films in a daring and vibrant style. And because the cases she triggers in her projects are presented with controversial interpretations, this often leads to numerous criticisms on her work. Saab has always seen the female figure as the most dominant factor of her narratives. I will illustrate this through discussion of Gahzal Al Banat (1985), Kany Ya Ma Kan, Beyrouth (1995), Dunia (2005) and What’s Going On? (2009). I will discuss how she highlighted the female personalities and their issues in her films through narrative and visual language, focusing specifically on the body in motion and sensual dance. What are the cinematic methods Saab used in her films to move the female figure from being oppressed and restricted to a journey of self-discovery? Did this fit with the vision that Saab had for Arab women?
