Full textThis thesis proposes, following Michel Foucault’s work, an enquiry into the ethics of the subject as a possible way to free oneself from knowledge-power relations and the effects of subjectivation. Freedom cannot, however, be identified with a simple emancipation from an external power; it is, in its ultimate form, a voluntary choice, a self-action that carries the project of forging its own subjectivity, with the use of its own techniques. It’s a “becoming-subject”, namely, having the ability to act, to produce, and to transform itself into a political and social subject. The aim of this thesis is to show the value and importance of an ethical approach for the present time, the issue at hand being the subject and its ability to be the agent and the master of its existence

The analysis developed in this research is divided in the vertical and horizontal axis. In the first one, examined the way Foucault presented, reversed and problematized three constant analytic grounds he bases his work, by focusing it between the late seventies and early eighties. Refers to truth (as regimes of truth and tell-the-truth), power (as the government of self and others) and ethics (as a style or way of life). Is assumed that bringing to front his courses at Collège de France and using what he had said and written about the subject, can be composed drawings establishing a route that lasted a lifetime (êthos), trajectory from which is could infer the intellectual’s ethics. Moreover, to take on board the problems, issues and shapes those grounds assumed in his work helps us think our present (the risks of a controlled society, the caution needed in claiming the identity politics, the nowadays control of the body, etc.). In the second part of this research, is presented the way Foucault's thoughts were welcomed in some Brazilian newspapers, mainly in the seventies and eighties, causing public discussions which placed the Brazilian intelligentsia in a difficult position. There are arguments about the opposition between the Marxist structural analysis, the theoretical and methodological innovations for historical analysis, the subject’s "death", the thought of power, the postmodernity, among other disputes and issues that still reflect on the studies about Foucault’s work.

Full textIn his work, michel foucault suggests that phenomena should be approched through what constitutes their limit (law through crime and prison, normaly through madness. . . ). We, in our turn, have applied this method to foucault's work, which we have revisited, starting our study from its collateral works. We offer a singular reading of his work, relying mamily on his dits et ecrits. We have enhanced the value of the notion of ascesis, and asked more globally the question of the subject and subjectivation in a work witch intends to do without reference to its author. "who is subject?" "what is the event?" foucault's ascesis is a specific form of ascesis, devoted to the double task of downgrading and the making of the self. According to us, it opens out, by the practices it involves, on to a space of its own, which has to be characterized (fiction, distance, awe. . . ). Through this approach, we get back to the question of archives and their relation to history, with its political implications

Full textHow can philosophy think its outside? What is the limit between philosophy and non-philosophy? The Hegelian philosophy tried to answer those questions by setting up a philosophic totality through dialectics and a certain philosophic way of thinking history. Our goal is to consider this relation between philosophy and non-philosophy that clearly appears in the thought of Michel Foucault, which seeks, all along its course, to free itself from the Hegelian philosophy of totality and of history, by carrying out various historical investigations. For Foucault, the main point is to call into question the naturality of objects, such as madness, crime and sexuality. Foucault constantly brings to light the multiplicity of the empirical forms of objectivation, and of subjection or subjectivation as well, inasmuch as a proliferation of histories goes against Hegel’s dialectical totality of history. As this discharge never ends once and for all, the Foucauldian thought becomes a set of attempts in order to philosophize in the non-philosophy that is history. Being against Hegel always involves thinking with him. Our analysis aims at understanding the Foucauldian efforts, by following their unfolding in the three periods that are the archaeology, the genealogy and the problematisation, and to show how they are formed and transformed around the theme of history, by a series of sometimes very minor changes. In this sense, the thought of Michel Foucault is an examination of philosophy itself facing non-philosophy

This paper aims at presenting Michel Foucault's theory on the institution and existence of disciplinary society. It also aims to show, based on Foucault's viewpoint, an analysis on the modus operandi of two 1st degree public schools from some documents. This analysis intends to make explicit the mechanisms and instruments of that discipline in the relationships maintained among members of the school, emphasizing the role of the teacher. Among these lines we make an attempt to describe Foucault's theory on disciplinary society by using his studies on patterns he developed prior to such society so as to better understand it. Therefore, such goals were determined by the need of ascertaining the viability of an analysis on the complex generating net of power relations. It was also possible to ascertain the existence of a commitment involving all the members of school concerning the production of knowledge and facts made necessary for the maintenance of the established order. Such a commitment is felt in the school practice due to the use of procedures intended at the scope and continuity of power effects brought about by those relations. The attendance to control mechanisms that support the school discipline normalizing function can be verified in the granting of functional roles to cach professional including the teacher himself. It must also be stressed the constraints imposed by the analysis scope here used, permitting one the foresce the advantages for applying this study on a more comprehensive research scope with a view to verifying the level of generality of the statements made herein, from this particular study.

Abstract: Is it legitimate to say Foucault's thinking is purely "iconoclastic" in relation to these two sciences? In the development of these questions, this Doctorate thesis describes Foucault's work in three stages, conceived as a complex net of propositions based on three very distinctive perspectives: 1. the analysis of the dreams in Psychology and Psychoanalysis, where results are described as symptoms. What is the sense of this analysis so characteristic of these sciences? How does Foucault react to this symmetry which results from the Psycho-pathogenic examination of the oniric processes? 2. the detailed examination of the method used in Psychology and Psychoanalysis to inscribe the human behaviour in the wor/d of natural objects. What composes the inadequacy of the psychological sciences when borrowing the composition oftheirobjects from Medicine? 3. the investigation of madness through the versions disregarded by the official history. What alternative history can be constructed from these versions, which were inconceived until the 60s? What image of madness appears from these alternative versions of history, which was previously inconceivable in the practice of the psychological sciences? These three perspectives are not intended to be antagonistic. In the development of this thesis, these perspectives converge even though they are described in depth. It is necessary to highlight the degree of complexity of Foulcault's work to recognise that it pushes Psychology and Psychoanalysis into a more critical and reflexive posture rather than dogmatic

O presente trabalho visa analisar o breve, porém significativo, diálogo travado entre Pierre Hadot e Michel Foucault no final do século XX. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
The present work analyzes the brief, but significant, dialogue settled between Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault in the late twentieth century. Seeks to present and discuss the theory of Pierre Hadot about the so-called spiritual exercises in relation to the aesthetic of existence advocated by Foucault in the final phase of his work, a discussion which presents numerous points of convergence and divergence between these two philosophers. Worth analyzing to what extent the critics raised by Hadot really influence the foucauldian project, or whether they are due to an inaccurate interpretation of the real objectives of Foucault.

Full textThis paper, as an object of thinking and a horizon of a research, aims at the question on the authority in education. Attempting to focus on a larger range of the Foucauldian studies and using the description as a tool for the building of some notions, which are useful to compose a certain form of understanding, a certain form of thinking, argument that the authority, understood as an image of power and control, connected with a certain kind of alethurgy. In this way, I problematize governmentality, within a more specific context of Foucault’s studies on the relations between the individual and the truth, as a form of ethical alethurgy. I describe that the governmentality in the "last Foucault”, deals centrally with the formation of êthos in order to access truth and the constitution of ethical practice ─ the practice in which the individual is seen as the moral one of his own practice ─ constituting, the ethical practice as a political action. Self-governance is thought as a condition of the governance of the others or, in other words, the governance of the others is thought as indexed to self-governance. I am engaged in exposing that, in Contemporaneity, it is possible to verify an emphasis on what I call “alethurgy of equality”, which is involved with the establishment of the truth of the intrinsic equality of all individuals with the related statement of the individual independence of each one as a maximum value. I describe that this alethurgy defines an image of power and control of the law, which composes a tutelary image of authority in which the governance of the others is thought, then, disassociated from the self-governance. I sustain that, in the educational field, it is possible to observe a sort of weakening of the traditional image of authority and the correlation of the strengthening of the tutelary image of the authority. It is stablished for the definition of an image of power and control of the law, produced for the sort of a very great advance of alethurgy of equality in such field. According to what I already mentioned, I propose to essay the thinking of ethical governmentality articulated with education, as a means of an image of power and control of an ethical practice; composed of an ethical image of authority. It is considered in a way that the truth is shown either through the positivity of the ethical practice or the observable link between saying and doing, which becomes the condition of a political action. Summing up, I do believe ethical governmentality can help us to think in another form of other questions of authority in education and, at the same time, contribute for the teacher – in a relation of sovereignty wit himself - believe in his political value of his ethical practice and recognize himself as the protagonist of the educational process. As an analytical material, I resort of descriptions of fragments of documents, legislation, legal decisions and school questions.

Full textThe foucaldian company attempts to draw a critico-historic diagnosis of our culture to write the history of the present. Through this attachment in the question of the present, It is question in this thesis to show " beyond the breaks, beyond the methodological changes " that between the archaeologist ( 1961 ), the genealogist ( 1975 ) and the "last one Foucault ( 1984 )", there is strong links and not breaks of the methodological failures or even bends. Our analysis attempts to reveal the footbridges which bind (connect) these " three periods ": the first works on the knowledge and that where Foucault wonders about the problem of the knowledge and the power in that, later, where Foucault concentrates mainly on the study of the texts of the Greco-Roman philosophy

Full textThis research explores the possibility to work in the wake of Foucault's work, conceived it as a certain philosophical practice consisting in constantly opening the field of philosophy to its 'outsides' and connecting the history of a concept with the historical framework of an experience of thought. The core of this archaeological and genealogical method is the relation between philosophical and historical practices and the use of the historical constructions to complete a philosophical task : to reveal and destabilize our present. Thus, to resume the interrupted task of the "historical ontology of ourselves" means considering Foucaldian genealogies as "machines" to be tested on the historical ground, which also involve a specific practice of practice of history. The genealogy of the scientific and political concept of "population" is here considered in an historical-critical perspective : this history can both clarify the specificity of the Foucaldian reading of "biopolitics" and question its results, assumptions and interpretations. Through the historical genealogy of the object "population" I want , on the one hand, to fight the idea that the concept was "invented" by a dominant scientific and political complex and on the other hand to reveal the multiple power relations, events and struggles that underlie its appearence. The emergence of "population" is thus placed within a history of governmentality which culminated in the middle of the eighteenth century, when a liberal governing art became dominant and the word "population" widely used

Full textThe last innovations in the field of communication networks and information technology have led to the development of mobile information systems (IS). Disrupting the organizational spatial and global borders, mobile IS may lead to new ways of organizing and working. A paradox characterizes mobile IS, as they may simultaneously be considered as means of autonomy and control. That is why we question traditional ways of organizing and management, as regards hierarchical and control relationships, following mobile IS introduction in firms. Our theoretical analysis, which draws on organization control research and IS-organization interaction literature, proposes a conceptual framework based on Michel FOUCAULT’s work. We develop a qualitative and abductive research, inscribed in a dialogical perspective. A four case studies analysis, based on 73 interviews and 6 days of observation, enables to adapt and to enrich our conceptual framework. Three kinds of results are identified. We put forward links between organizational discourses, systems of control and individual reactions during mobile IS implementation. We then realize a political model of IS deployment, based on Foucault’s framework. Last, we build a genealogy of relationships between control, surveillance, information and IS

Full textThe works of foucault bring about an ensemble of problems in which we tried to treat in this work. From one period to another, we encounter a diversity of tone, style and subject among the works the destination and purpose seem uncertain. In particular, two moments reflect this discontinuity: between l'archeologie du savoir et surveiller et punir, foucault changes or seems to change methods; between la volonte de savoir et l'usage des plaisirs et le souci de soi, the project even of a story of sexuality seems to orient itself in a different way. In our opinion, the changes which accent foucault's path represent different moments of the same questioning that can be explained in different ways, but does not constitute less of a coherent path. In our opinion, foucault's fundamental problem was always disecting the processes of subject formation, and making clearer the knowledge which discreetly participates in his constitution. This hypothesis is based on the research of "literary" works: a collection of articles by literary critics; on the other hand we studied the inedited between 1976 and 1984. The first part of this research allowed us to confirm that already at the beginning of the 60's, foucault thought about a series of concepts that will be the basis of his archeo-genealogical method. The second part of this work allowed us to establish the existance of a certain graduality between 1976 and 1984 : in l'usage des plaisirs, foucault does not mention the genealogy of. .

Full textSince his appearance in the world, man has always put the gods at the center of his existence. It was with the gods that he found the right stability between managing his existential fears and his constant desire to understand the laws of the universe. But, this theocentrism will be broken because the history of humanity is deeply marked by the destitution of the gods for the benefit of man, it is the advent of anthropocentrism, an attitude that puts man at the center of all. And later, this philosophical anthropocentrism will give birth to what is today called humanism, which also manifests itself in a deep love and unconditional respect for all that relates to human dignity in general. Emmanuel Kant (1724-1804) is one of the greatest essential figures of this humanist current, he will sublimate human nature at its peak. Indeed, with a rigorous and methodical use of reason (pure and practical), Kant's rationalist humanism has the ambition to make man an absolutely free and autonomous being, virtuous, creator and possessor of knowledge (or of truth), architect of the evolution of societies. Ultimately, one gets the impression that he always does everything in the interests of humanity. However, Michel Foucault (1926-1984) will undertake a radical deconstruction of the Kantian subject despite the great capacities that he has. In fact, Foucault will criticize Kantian humanism as a whole because of the importance he gives to man. Thus, for the good of all, the French philosopher believes that "the death of man" becomes an absolute requirement. This hostile attitude leads us to seriously question the true foundations of humanism. Indeed, why is man a danger? Should we admit that humanism is no longer useful to us today? And if the man is no longer important, what should he be replaced by? At this stage, it becomes imperative to proceed to an analysis of Foucault's zetetic approach in order to understand his real intentions. Essentially, this theoretical confrontation that he undertakes with Kant will allow us to reflect on the contemporary issues of humanism in the era of postmodernity

This research refers mainly to Jacques Lagrange’s unpublished manuscripts related to courses offered by Michel Foucault at École Normale Supérieure de Paris, and deposited at Institut Mémoires de l’Édition Contemporaine. It also refers to those by Michel Foucault himself recently deposited at Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The latter focus on files concerning the 1950s –a period not to be ignored if one intends to understand the development of his researches, in order to apprehend the role of Psychology in Michel Foucault’s philosophical problematic. This research intends to show that – leaving from a discourse on psykhé (Psychology) and reaching a conduction of psykhé (Psykhogogía) - , Foucault’s considerations adopt an anti-psychologic posture, while they allow a new understanding of subjectivity

From the writings of Michel Foucault, we problematize the Teaching of sexualities in the school - when it enters into the informal curriculum through transversal themes in the National Curriculum – Sexual Orientation – performing a counterpoint with Education from Erotics. We start from the discussion of the formation of social and scientifically constructed stereotypes and we penetrate a process of signification of normal/abnormal from the pathological. This will be the path covered by Foucault which we will also use to visualize the construction of sexual subjects. Based on the discussion of anatomo-politics to biopolitics we will engender our journey to finally enter in the discussion of a care of the self as a posture both ethical as well as political. During this research we will raise questionings in an attempt to cause uneasiness about these two distinct approaches in relation to the formation of a subject, on the one hand erotic, and on the other hand sexual, however, the school environment will not be left aside of the discussion. We differentiate Ars erotica from Scientia sexualis to the production of truth. From the subjects that the Scientia sexualis produces, we will question a care of the self as a retrocessional source of existence within the pedagogical exercise, as a transforming and transfiguring experience from the self to the self. When tracing the way for the recognition of this Foulcault’s genealogy we become able to visualize, from our own eyes, how we are subjected to a history that has scientified, in a positivistic way, our knowledge of ourselves, and has developed a standard of knowledge of the other. We finally question to what extent can teachers speak with his/her students about something that, in most cases, these professionals are not able to, as they have a 'little care' of themselves . We speak here... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: This research aimed at investigating the functioning of a group work developed by students in junior high school portuguese classes. We have dealt with the hypothesis that while working in groups, power, traditionally exercised by the teacher in the classroom, carne to be performed by students themselves, which contributed to maintain present the "image" of the teacher. Based on Michel Foucault' s perspective of discourse .analysis, we have investigated the conception of group work found in textbooks used to teach portuguese as well as curriculum parameters. Recorded classes were also analysed. Although the practice of group work is seen as a positive pedagogical altemative, able to provi de students with better interaction pattems, cooperation possibilities and, consequently, a better quality of the leaming process, data analysis have shown that this is not always reached. Sometimes, students ended up performing the functions of the teacher by controlling and watching their own classmates. We have also noticed that manifestations of cooperation within group work were put aside by dividing the task into parts each student had to do separately, which characterized group work as an "individual" activity. Some students have even made use of their classmates' texts as a model, which served to homogenize their texts

Abstract: This thesis intend at fírst: to rebuild in an arguable way the ethics considerations of Wittgenstein, and second: to point out the relations that have those considerations wíth the notions of language and subjectivity to this philosopher supported along his works. We believe that has a strong relation among subjectivity, ethics and language, and this relation changes between the two periods that have been used to separate his thought. Therefore, following up the ethical considerations of Wittgenstein it will make us to see how those considerations are related with the notion of philosophy that he had and above ali, to specify the statement of "grammatical therapy". From those reflective considerations we tried to give a new definition of ethical character by the philosophy's concept as "therapy"

This dissertation aims at analyzing the extent to which, and the reasons why, Michel Foucault's thinking can conceive ethics as the aesthetics of existence. It intends to investigate how Foucault articulates the relationship between the subject and ethics throughout his career as a philosopher. For that purpose, a hypothesis is raised which follows the author's assertion that it is not out of moral concern that man seeks to form knowledge on himself; instead, it is from a discourse on knowing about man that modern schemes related to moral are produced. Through an ethics of problematization, this paper seeks to examine how the relationship between anthropocentric discourse and disciplinary-power technologies works. Thus, the procedure adopted by Foucault reveals that the experience of the modern subject is contained in the condition of being obedient. With Foucault‟s incursion into research of the history of subjectivity in the Greco-Roman antiquity, a new reflection on the relationship between the subject and ethics guides the author‟s interest. The relationship with one-self defines the ethics to which the aesthetics of existence is linked. In this sense, the aesthetics of existence concerns the self-constitution of the moral subject by means of the transformation of oneself‟s experience (soi). Although the aesthetics of existence is a historical cultural phenomenon of the Greco-Roman antiquity, it presents criteria which allow its compatibility with a reflection on the modes of being of a historical-critical ontology of ourselves. The proposal of an ethics of problematization prepares Foucault's thinking for an ethics that is the aesthetic of existence, in as much as it contributes to the clarification of ethics as praxis. Therefore, by means of a historical-critical ontology of ourselves that transformation of attitude is made feasible for the reflection upon what happens with the man of present time.

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the Foucauldian concept of biopolitics on what it has to say in relation to both the founding sociological statement of the autonomization / differentiation of spheres in modern societies as to the critique of that statement in the tradition that goes from reification, passes through the logic of identity promoted by instrumental rationality, to the systemic colonization of the lifeworld and the intricate formulations of field / habitus in Bourdieu. After the realization of an archeology of the statements and counter-statements of the thesis of the autonomization / differentiation of the spheres in modernity and of an immersion in the nuances of the Foucauldian formulation of the concepts of biopower, biopolitics and governmentality, we seek first to show how the transversality of the Foucauldian analytics of power radically challenges the understanding of power and the political as a differentiated, autonomous and self-referential sphere or (sub) system. Secondly, we seek to emphasize how the deepening of genealogical reflection on biopolitics, progressively thought of as the modern technology of power par excellence, points to localized forms of indifferentiation between spheres and social codes: a) analysis of the imbrications between truth and power in the genealogical program itself ; b) between historical knowledge and political practice in the political historicism of the discourse of war between the races; c) between statistical-biological knowledge and political regulation of the population in the various standardization processes; d) in the delimitation between the economic, political and juridical spheres conditioned by the regime of truth of the political economy; e) in the neoliberal direction of all the "spheres" of society for the objective and subjective constitution of the market economy. In this sense, insofar as he formulates a genealogical instrument capable of diverse and heuristically potent applicability, Foucault is similar to Bourdieu, who also elaborates in his own way a praxeology interested in multiple forms of social domination through the practical and lexical autonomy of the fields. Two research programs that, alongside the efforts of the Critical Theory of the Frankfurtian matrix, may function in a complementary way in the analysis of the various levels and modes of indifferentiation between spheres and codes traditionally taken as intransitive to each other.

Full textThis thesis is a study on disciplinarity, focused on what I call the cognitive axis of disciplines. The analysis, developed from a Foucauldian perspective, has two moments. In the first moment, inspired on Michel Foucault’s archeology, I do a reading of the antidisciplinary discourses that have been articulated in Brazil in the last three decades. Here I identify and describe two discoursive series — one family has an epistemological emphasis; the other one has a pedagogic accent. The epistemological family works as an argumentative basis for the pedagogical one, at least when the latter emerged in the seventies. In both cases I identify some topoi that show the commitment of these discourses with the Enlightment heritage; I also try to point out the continuities and ruptures from series to series. In this archeological reading, I describe some additional discourses that, even if they present some differences and countertendencies, are very close to the mentioned families. Besides all these, it is still possible to identify other discourses (perhaps as yet somewhat dispersed) that are clearly in opposition to the ones previously described. Linking the first and the second moments, I discuss the reason why I adopt a Foucauldian perspective, and the methodological problems that come about because of this choice. In order to do this, I make a brief description of the philosophical thought of Michel Foucault and try to articulate it with others thinkers’ thought, especially, as much as it is possible, with Norbert Elias’ thinking. In the second moment, using the genealogy as an investigation techné, I develop a discussion on the disciplinarity both as a physical constraint — the body axis — and as an internal mechanism of control and delimitation of discourses — the cognitive axis. The outcomes arising from both dimensions are: a) specific forms of being in the world, b) of knowing the world and c) of being situated in the world. In this way, I analyze what I call a disciplinary turn, that is, the shift from the Classic Antiquity disciplinarity (novem disciplinæ) and Middle Age disciplinarity (artes liberalis or disciplinæ liberalis: trivium and quadrivium) to the Modern disciplinarity, now supposed to represent both the natural and the social order of the world. Thereafter, I discuss the contribution of the disciplines for the making of the modern subject, emphasizing both the discoursive and the non-discoursive practices that are articulated at the school, practices which make this institution the main machinery in this process. As this genealogy is developed, the different topoi (identified in the archeological discussions of the antidisciplinary discourses) start to emerge. Among other things, it shows the deep conections that exist not only between the disciplinarity and the modern episteme but also between the disciplinarity and those same discourses that claim to extinguish it.

Full textIn this thesis, i tried do treat michel foucault like a philosopher, and to settle his work in a philosophical tradition. The first part emphazies the marxism weight in the young foucault's philosophical education and builds e reading of the second thesis about kant's anthropology. A precise examen leads me to recognize the importance of the <> in the archeological analysis. From these first results i tried to show how the three big archeologies (histoire de la folie, naissance de la clinique, les mots et les choses) ela borate a transcendantal dimension in a problematic relationschip with history. These archeologies are always followed by texts about litterature where foucault finds the experience of origin which stake the phenomenological synthesis wich were his starting points. Reflecting, from a fundamental point of view, the notion of a history of truth, thel last part studies four points : meaning, shape, object, subject. Finally, it's about the very notion of origin that foucault's nietzscheism is going to burst, imposing a definitive incompatibility with every phenomenological approach
