Abstract:
ABSTRACT Planicapritermes Emerson, 1949 is a South American termite genus with two nominal species: Planicapritermes planiceps (Emerson, 1925) and Planicapritermes longilabrum Constantino, 1998. The soldiers of this genus are characterized by strongly asymmetrical mandibles. Planicapritermes planiceps was described from soldiers and workers, and P. longilabrum only from soldiers. Here we describe and illustrate workers of P. longilabrum based on specimens collected in Rondônia state, Brazil. We also present a comparison between workers and soldiers of P. planiceps and P. longilabrum, and describe the nest of P. planiceps.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Three forested properties owned by the University of Michigan and near to Ann Arbor were the sites of some of the earliest forestry field education in the USA. No longer managed solely for this purpose after the mid-1960s, and at the same time nested within a rapidly developing area of Michigan, current planning for the properties focuses on melding their historic legacy with renewed ecologically and sustainably sound uses. We developed new maps and knowledge of forest and land change within and surrounding the properties between 1949 and 2015. We acquired aerial photography at 5-10 year intervals, created land-cover/land-use and change data, and identified key trajectories of change. Results within Saginaw Forest (established 1904) showed a consistent amount of forest area, but transitions in some observed overstory composition from coniferous to mixed forest between 1949 and 2015. Within the present-day extent of Stinchfield Woods and the Newcomb Tract (established 1925-1955), forest area increased from 68% to 98% and 51% to 93% respectively between 1949 and 2015, as forest plantations and other regrowth replaced former cleared lands. In 0.5 km-wide buffer areas surrounding the properties, agriculture decreased, and urban uses increased dramatically between 1949 and 2015 for all three sites. Forested land cover has also increased on the surrounding landscapes, again replacing agriculture and grassland. The properties today still display the legacies of their historic forestry education and research, and are living laboratories of natural succession in planted forests. The properties now also represent some of the most protected local lands while the landscapes surrounding them continue to change.

Ordon, Marta. "Modification of the legal basis of the activity of religious orders in Poland introduced by the communist authorities in 1949." Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego 17 (December 30, 2014): 193–208. http://dx.doi.org/10.31743/spw.5119.

Abstract:
This study casts light on the circumstances and effects of changes to the legal acts defining the legal framework of the activities of religious orders in post-war Poland. Until 1949, religious orders had not been covered by the regulations on the creation and legalization of secular associations. Pursuant to the decree of 5 August 1949, however, they were obligated to comply with the provisions of the Law on Associations. Failure to apply for the registration resulted in the dissolution of the order and the forfeiture of its assets by the state. Still, despite the submission of the applications as provided by law, the authorities refused to registered orders and did not maintain an official register of such entities, either. In point of fact, the communist regime only intended to develop such a legal context in which the law might be used as a tool of repression against religious orders. The actual aim of the 1949 amendment was not the intent to clarify the legal status of religious orders, which remained uncertain in the aftermath of the Resolution of the Provisional Government of National Unity of 12 September 1945 invalidating the 1925 Concordat. The authorities only intended to establish a strict state control over religious organizations and, by extension, gradually reduce their activity until their complete disappearance from public life. The content relies primarily on the analysis of the legislation and archival material gathered in the state and ecclesiastical archives in Poland.

Abstract:
The taxonomy and natural history of the ant genus Crematogaster are reviewed for the Costa Rican fauna. Thirtyone species are known, and a key is provided for these and two additional species from adjacent regions of Panama. Species boundaries are evaluated over their entire range when possible. The taxonomic history of the genus is one of unbridled naming of new species and subspecies, with no synthetic works or keys. Major taxonomic changes are proposed, with the recognition of several polytypic species with very broad ranges and the synonymization of the many names associated with them. Crematogaster pygmaea Forel 1904, suturalis Forel 1912, ornatipilis Wheeler 1918, erici Santschi 1929, and chacoana Santschi 1933 are synonymized under abstinens Forel 1899; centralis Santschi 1932 under acuta (Fabricius 1804); aruga Forel 1913 under arcuata Forel 1899; ludio Forel 1912, armandi Forel 1921, inca Wheeler 1925, and cocciphila Borgmeier 1934 under brasiliensis Mayr 1878; parabiotica Forel 1904 under carinata Mayr 1862; brevispinosa Mayr 1870, minutior Forel 1893, schuppi Forel 1901, recurvispina Forel 1912, sampaioi Forel 1912, striatinota Forel 1912, townsendi Wheeler 1925, and chathamensis Wheeler 1933 under crinosa Mayr 1862; barbouri Weber 1934 under cubaensis Mann 1920; antillana Forel 1893, sculpturata Pergande 1896, kemali Santschi 1923, accola Wheeler 1934, phytoeca Wheeler 1934, panamana Wheeler 1942, and obscura Santschi 1929 under curvispinosa Mayr 1870; descolei Kusnezov 1949 under distans Mayr 1870; projecta Santschi 1925 under erecta Mayr 1866; carbonescens Forel 1913 under evallans Forel 1907; palans Forel 1912, ascendens Wheeler 1925, and dextella Santschi 1929 under limata F. Abstract:
This article examines how the Hitler Youth generation (born 1925–1933) narrativizes their family stories by analyzing archived memoirs, published memoirs, and school essays from the1947–1949 period. The Hitler Youth generation’s postwar recollections of the National Socialist period vary according to medium and time. Both are key to understanding this generation’s struggle to master the Nazi past on national and personal levels. Using Fivush and Merrill’s expanded concept of ecological systems to study family stories, this article illustrates how archived memoirs transfer family stories intergenerationally. Its key finding is that these narratives act as memory tools to transmit stories of Nazi Germany family life; in turn, this reveals narrative gaps and inconsistences and occasionally the narrator’s inability to cope with compromised family members.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The history of Indian national income estimates goes back to 1876 when Dadabhai Naoroji made the first crude estimates for the year 1867-68. However, these estimates and most of the work that followed was tainted by the political biases of t he researchers. The main purpose of national income statisticians including Naoroji, uptil 1934, was to point out the stark poverty and sub-marginal conditions of an average Indian as a direct result of an alien rule. In 1934 V.K.R.V. Rao published "an Essay on India's National Income, 1925- 29", which IS widely regarded as the first authentic academic exercise into the estimation of the national income of India. In 1949 the Government of India, realizing the need for reliable estimates of national income for policy purposes appointed the National Income Committee under the chairmanship of Professor Mahalanobis. The Committee had two members, Professor Gadgil of the Gokhale Institute lt Poona and Professor Rao, the then head of the Delhi School of Economics. This Committee was responsible for putting the national accounts estimation of India on a modern footing.

Abstract:
The Polish Radio began its activity on the first of February 1925. On this day the first program of the Polish Radio technical Society was broadcasted. From then on, the radio accompanied Polish people in good and bad times. The years 1946 – 1956 were not so glorious. At that time, Polish radio became the propaganda tool for the PPR and from December 1949 the PZPR. These parties, mainly under the slogans of the reconstruction of the country from war damage and the struggle for peace, sought to Stalinize Poland on the model of the USSR. While studying those times, it should be stated that information and publication hardly existed because it was replaced by a hypocritical, brutal and intrusive propaganda. However, history of Polish Radio in those years should not only been described in critical way. At that time, many very important and socially necessary initiatives took place. Since the first year after regaining independence, more and more new broadcast stations have been launched in various regions of Poland. New programs were broad-casting more and more often, such as "Muzyka i Aktualności", in which various mes-sages were given with ease, interwoven with modern jazz music.

Abstract:
We investigated the dynamic properties of population cycles in Canadian muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus). Ninety-one historic time series of muskrat-harvest data obtained from the Hudson's Bay Company Archives were analyzed. Most series were 25 years in length (1925–1949) and were distributed primarily throughout five ecozones. For each series, we estimated period length and coefficients for a second-order autoregressive model. Estimated period length varied between 3 and 13 years, with 3- to 5-year periods located in Subarctic-Arctic ecozones. We hypothesize that the 4-year cycles are largely a result of predation by red fox (Vulpes vulpes), which exhibit 4-year cycles in Arctic regions. The remaining ecozones generally averaged 8–9 years in period length. However, the relative contributions of direct and delayed density dependence varied along a latitudinal gradient. We hypothesize that both social and trophic interactions are necessary to produce the observed dynamics, but that shifts in the nature of mink predation were responsible for the changes in the relative contribution of direct and delayed density dependence. Essentially, there is a tension between population-intrinsic and trophic interactions that may bound the length of the cycle.

Abstract:
Colonial educational policies were marked by conflicting interests of different actors who were involved in the provision and consumption of education. Initially, education matters were left to individual colonies and voluntary agencies, but from 1925, Whitehall began to take a keen interest in the development of education in the colonies. Several educational policies were enacted, including Fraser report, the East African Protectorate Education Commission in Kenya, Phelps-stoke commission, Memorandum on education policy in British Tropical Africa, Beecher committee of 1949 and Binns committee report of 1952. These policies sought to inculcate western morals, technical skills, and the need for rural advancement. Africans did not contend with recommendations of these commissions; therefore, several institutions emerged that sought to improve educational conditions for Africans, such as political associations, Local Native councils, and Independent school associations. Data for this study was collected qualitatively; this involved both primary and secondary sources of data. The results of the study indicate that politics has a direct influence on educational policy. The study will be significant to educational stakeholders, educational policy developers, and planners, educational historians and will be used as a basis for teaching politics and education in colonial Kenya and for future research in the history of education.

Abstract:
The paper evaluates the growth, structure, production, quality, leaf area index and dendrochronology of 100 years old Austrian pine (Pinus nigra ARNOLD) monoculture situated in the forest type group Fageto-Quercetum in the locality Horné Lefantovce (Nitrianska Streda Forest District, Topoľčianky Forest Enterprise). Codominant trees, trees with stem of high quality, with medium-sized crown, medium dense and straight crown are the most abundant in the stand. The tree number in the stand is 1,024 trees/ha, basal area 51.75 m2/ha, growing stock 571.56 m3/ha, aboveground biomass stock 348.76 t/ha and leaf area index 21.85 ha/ha. Dendrochronological analyses examined the response in individual sample trees and minimum annual ring width was found in 1920, 1922, 1925, 1929, 1933, 1938, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1954, 1963, 1968, 1976, 1982, 1990, 1993, 1998, 2001. Marked maximum values of annual ring width in the years 1919, 1923, 1926, 1930, 1936, 1937, 1941, 1948, 1951, 1955, 1959, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1997 were found as a positive productive feature. Beginning in the year 1993, dry Austrian pine trees occurred in the stand as a result of the fungal infection by Sphaeropsis sapinea (Fr.) Dyko et Sutton.

Abstract:
Heaviside, in volume 1 of Electromagnetic theory , considered shielding of conducting materials in the form of attenuation. This treatment is still significant in the understanding of shielding effectiveness. He also considered propagation of electromagnetic waves in free-space. What Heaviside (1850–1925) could never have imagined is that 125 years later, there would be devices we know as mobile phones (or cell phones, handies, etc.) with capabilities beyond the dreams of the great science fiction writers of the day like H. G. Wells (1866–1949) or Jules Verne (1828–1905). More than this, that there would be a need for law enforcement agencies, among others, to use electromagnetically shielded enclosures to protect electronic equipment from communicating with the ‘outside world’. Nevertheless, Heaviside's work is still fundamental to the developments discussed here. This paper provides a review of Heaviside's view of shielding and propagation provided in volume 1 of Electromagnetic theory and develops that to the design of new experiments to test the shielding of these portable enclosures in a mode-stirred reverberation chamber, a test environment that relies entirely on reflections from conducting surfaces for its operation. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Celebrating 125 years of Oliver Heaviside's ‘Electromagnetic Theory’’.

Abstract:
The article compares seven versions of S. Marshak’s poem for children “Ice Cream”. Three of them (1925, 1940 and 1957) are recognized as the canonical editions, and others (of the 1929, 1949, 1960.1962) as their variants. The final version for posthumous publications is ascribed, without any reason given, to 1960 production year, with deviations taken from different publications of this text. The article analyzes the reasons underlining such transformation of the text that include changes in realia, social tastes and mores, stylistic and ideological tendencies of the 20th century, and the poet’s desire to harmonize his creative attitudes with external factors. The analysis demonstrates that although the editing process of the text was organic, the difference between editions is so great (only 30 verses are shared between all of the editions) that the reproduction of all versions is needed for scholarly and the critical editions of Marshak’s poetry. His editing method is compensatory: the plot and style varied, but the philosophical and ethical subtext important for Marshak as a creative individual remained the same. These are archetypal ideas of joyful acceptance of the objective laws of nature, the glorification of those who support world harmony, and the condemnation of those who violate it. The appendix contains a comparative table showing the history of Marshak’s text.

Abstract:

Abstract:
“The interpretation of our reality through patterns not our own serves only to make us more unknown, ever less free, ever more solitary.”Gabriel García Márquez, Nobel Lecture, 1982In the second half of this century, we have been told, the Latin American novel came of age. Authors no longer felt constrained to subject indigenous contents to alien forms. Instead contents suggested forms truly representative of societies, polities, and cultures in search of identity and struggling with numerous historic problems, some not even of their own region's making.Although Latin American novels have long been recognized as important to the area's cultural development, as indicators of literary achievement, and as valuable sources for scholars, few works published between Machado de Assis's Dom Casmuro (1900) and Miguel Angel Asturias's Men of Corn (Hombres de maiz, 1949) could be described as aesthetic magna opera. In the long hiatus essayists took up the task of portraying reality, producing such classics as Euclides da Cunha's Rebellion in the Backlands (Os Sertões, 1902), José Vasconcelos's The Cosmic Race (La raza cósmica, 1925), José Carlos Mariátegui's Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality (Siete ensayos de interpretación de la realidad peruana, 1927), Alberto Edwards Vives's The Aristocratic Fronde (La fronda aristocrática, 1927), and Ezequiel Martínez Estrada's X-Ray of the Pampa (Radiografía de la pampa, 1933).

Abstract:
Gurdjieff (c. 1866–1949) wrote a diverse collection of piano pieces at his “Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man” at the Chateau du Prieuré d’ Avon at Fontainebleau near Paris in a unique collaboration with pupil Thomas de Hartmann, a Ukrainian composer. This music was composed most intensely between the years 1925 and 1927, after Gurdjieff’s near-fatal car accident of 1924 when all work on his “Movements” or “sacred dances” had ceased. Thus this music was not written for the Movements but for other spiritual purposes. Gurdjieff would whistle, sing, and tap Eastern-sounding melodies and rhythms, and de Hartmann was required to immediately transform these indications into written Western notation, adding suitable harmonies. Like Gurdjieff’s teaching overall, the piano music is best described as a blending of Eastern and Western elements. In Gurdjieff’s lifetime this music was not published or recorded, and was mostly performed within his circle of pupils, as is appropriate within an initiatory and personally transmitted spiritual teaching. This article explores the Gurdjieff—de Hartmann music and its relationship to Gurdjieff’s overall esoteric teachings. There will also be an examination of how Gurdjieff groups and musicians continue to keep alive this music today, and it will be shown that the large number of recordings released represent its greatest cultural penetration into wider society. Currently hundreds of these recordings are available though, interestingly, most “Work” members are critical of them, arguing that the music only has value when experienced live and in a Work context.

Abstract:
Six helminths were common in lynx (Felis canadensis) throughout northern Ontario: Troglostrongylus wilsoni (Stough, 1953) Sarmiento &Stough, 1956 in the lung (54% of 127 infected), Cylicospirura felineus (Chandler, 1925) Sandground, 1932 in the stomach (91% of 360), Toxascaris leonina (von Linstow, 1902) and Toxocara cati (Schrank, 1788) in the stomach and intestine(97% and 22% of 274, respectively), and Taenia laticollis Rudolphi, 1819, and Taenia rileyi Loewen, 1929 in the intestine (94% and 47% of 275, respectively). Only Toxascaris leonina is transmitted by both lynx and canids in northern Ontario. Lynx is the only definitive host of the other common parasites. Seven helminths usually found in canids occurred infrequently in lynx: Alaria marcianae (LaRue, 1917) Walton, 1949 and immature Taenia pisiformis (Bloch, 1780) Gmelin, 1790 in 4% of those examined; and Capillaria aerophila (Creplin, 1839) Travassos, 1915, Physaloptera rara Hall &Wigdor, 1918, Ancylostoma caninum (Ercolani, 1859), Uncinaria stenocephalia (Railliet, 1884), and Taenia serialis (Gervais, 1847) Baillet, 1863 in one to three lynx each. Abundances of the common parasites varied only slightly among five forest regions, and did not differ between male and female lynx or among lynx older than kits. Cylicospirura felineus and Taenia rileyi were less abundant in kits, and Taenia laticollis and Toxocara cati tended to be more abundant in kits than in older lynx. Host condition and numbers of many of the common helminths tended to be positively correlated, but the inclusion of kits affected the result. The few helminth species established in lynx and their apparent uniform distribution in the host population may reflect the dominance of snowshoe hare in the diet.

Abstract:
Introduction:the main purpose of this article is to determine the state of vocational education at the time of the start of forecasting, to study its development in the previous period and to highlight features and main trends of this development, which allows us to characterize the prognostic development of vocational education under the influence of external factors.Materials and Methods: the pedagogical research used analytical and synthetic prognostic methods, methods of modeling and extrapolation, methods of expert evaluation, methods of theoretical analysis, generalization and evaluation of fact systems. In the forecasting of vocational education, the principle of dialectic unity of analysis and synthesis is implemented. Results:analysis of the dynamics of vocational education allows us to distinguish two different periods of development: 1) 1920-1958. - stage of unstable behavior, characteristic for the formation of the system; 2) 1959 - 1986 - the stage of development, characterized by the constant complexity of the system, an increase in the component composition, focus on achieving the goal. These factors make it possible to single out periods of development of vocational education in such a way that each includes either a “rise” or a “recession” in terms of the output of workers from vocational schools. Thus, the dynamics of the development of vocational education allows us to distinguish the following stages: Stage 1 - 1921 - 1925; Stage 2 - 1926 - 1932; Stage 3 - 1933 - 1940; Stage 4 - 1941 - 1948; Stage 5 - 1949 - 1953; Stage 6 - 1954 - 1958; Stage 7 - 1959 - 1965; Stage 8 - 1966 - 1975; Stage 9 - 1976 - 1986; Stage 10 - 1990 - the beginning of the XXI century.Discussion and Conclusions:a retrospective analysis of the development of vocational education in Russia has been carried out, the main periods of vocational education development have been identified, due to the development of various types of industries (mechanized, industrial, scientific and industrial), and features of vocational education during these periods. Selected factors affecting the training of future workers.

Abstract:
Abstract In the decades before Confederation in 1949, one important link between the Dominion of Canada and the reluctant tenth province was the increasing reliance of New- foundland students upon Canadian institutions for advanced education and training. Five volumes of Who's Who in Newfoundland, published between 1927 and 1961, provide biographical information on 344 individuals who left the colony to pursue educational opportunities abroad. The major focus for such opportunities shifted over time from Great Britain to the mainland of Canada. Institutions in the Maritime provinces drew over half of these students, while colleges and schools in Ontario received almost one-quarter. In some instances, Newfoundlanders became an impor- tant proportion of the student body at individual colleges -for example, students from western Newfoundland at Saint Francis Xavier and students from the south coast at Mount Allison. The highest proportion was probably the 15 per cent which Newfoundlander s formed in the general student body at Nova Scotia Technical College in the several years around 1940. The establishment of Memorial University College in 1925 did two things: it made Newfoundland more self-contained in matters of higher education, and it strengthened certain patterns of international linkage, especially with Canada. Fledgling Memo- rial's major formal affiliations were with the universities of the Maritime provinces: Memorial s president joined representatives of Acadia, Dalhousie, Saint Mary's, King's, Mount Allison and Saint Francis Xavier on the unified Atlantic region govern- ing body of Nova Scotia Technical College and 55 per cent of the degrees held by Memorial's preconfederation faculty members were from Canadian institutions. This paper demonstrates how natural it was for Newfoundland to be drawn within the Canadian educational orbit in the first half of the twentieth century, while charac- teristic patterns in the links that were formed between two North American countries are illustrated.

Abstract:
AbstractTo take stock of the human toll resulting from racial inequality in the United States, we estimate the number of excess deaths that accumulated among African Americans over the twentieth century as a result of the enduring racial gap in mortality rates. We assemble a wide array of demographic and vital statistics data for all years since 1900 to calculate the number of Black deaths in each half-decade that occurred in excess of what would be projected if Blacks had experienced the same gender- and age-specific mortality rates as Whites. We estimate that there were almost 7.7 million excess deaths among African Americans from 1900 through 1999. Those deaths comprised over 40% of all African American deaths over the century.Excess deaths were highest in the early decades (peaking in 1925–1934), but the only period of sustained decline was 1935–1949. Subsequent reductions in excess deaths were relatively modest and unstable, and in the last decade of the century the percentage of Blacks’ deaths that were excess returned to levels as high as in the first decade. That trajectory is less positive than the trajectory for the racial gap in life expectancy over the century.Excess deaths fell disproportionately among the young in the early twentieth century, but in the succeeding decades they progressively hit harder among older African Americans, many of them in the prime of life when their economic and social pursuits were vital to their families and communities. Excess deaths were also especially heavy among Black women for most of the century. We conclude by discussing the social and policy implications of the excess deaths. We assess trends in the early twenty-first century as we consider the political challenges involved in tackling the continuing excess death toll.

Abstract:
Ascid mites are an important component of the predatory meiofauna in soil, onvegetation, and in association with other animals, yet the Australian fauna isalmost unknown. At least 15 genera of ascid mites occur in Australia, of which14 genera and 26 species are treated in this paper. Four of these genera(Gamasellodes, Hoploseius,Platyseius,Xenoseius) are hererecorded from Australia for the first time. Six new species are described[Antennoseius(Antennoseius)lobochelus, sp.nov., Arctoseius memnon, sp. nov.,Gamasellodes plaire, sp. nov.,Platyseius cupensis, sp.nov., Xenoseius elizae, sp. nov., andZerconopsis pristis, sp. nov.], and six otherspecies are reported from Australia for the first time[Arctoseius semiscissus(Berlese),Gamasellodes rectiventris Lindquist,Proctolaelaps aurora(Vitzthum),Proctolaelaps bickleyi(Bram), Proctolaelaps lobatus De Leon, andProtogamasellus massula (Athias-Henriot)].Proctolaelaps nesbitti (Womersley) is removed fromsynonymy with P. pygmaeus (MÜller). Lectotypes aredesignated for Proctolaelaps antennatusKarg andP. australis Stone.P. antennatushas wrongly been recorded from Australia, and is known only from New Zealand. The first observations of feeding behaviour of mites in the generaIphidozercon, Xenoseius andZerconopsis confirm that nematophagy is prevalent amongsoil Ascidae. Keys to the world genera and Australian species areprovided.Protogamasellopsis Evans and Purvis istransferred to the Rhodacaridae, TangarorellusLuxton toan unspecified family in the Rhodacaroidea, andLindquistoseius Genis, Loots & Ryke to theOlogamasidae. Abstract:
Background: Lifespan psychological and life course sociological perspectives indicate that individual development is shaped by social and historical circumstances. Increases in fluid cognitive performance over the last century are well documented and researchers have begun examining historical trends in personality and subjective well-being in old age. Relatively less is known about secular changes in other key components of psychosocial function among older adults. Objective: In the present study, we examined cohort differences in key components of psychosocial function, including subjective age, control beliefs, and perceived social integration, as indicated by loneliness and availability of very close others. Methods: We compared data obtained 20 years apart in the Berlin Aging Study (in 1990-1993) and the Berlin Aging Study II (in 2013-2014) and identified case-matched cohort groups based on age, gender, cohort-normed education, and marital or partner status (n = 153 in each cohort, mean age = 75 years). In follow-up analyses, we controlled for having lived in former East versus West Germany, physical diseases, cohort-normed household income, cognitive performance, and the presence of a religious affiliation. Results: Consistently across analyses, we found that, relative to the earlier-born BASE cohort (year of birth: mean = 1916; SD = 3.38 years; range = 1901-1922), participants in the BASE-II sample (year of birth: mean = 1939; SD = 3.22 years; range = 1925-1949) reported lower levels of external control beliefs (d = -1.01) and loneliness (d = -0.63). Cohorts did not differ in subjective age, availability of very close others, and internal control beliefs. Conclusion: Taken together, our findings suggest that some aspects of psychosocial function of older adults have improved across the two recent decades. We discuss the possible role of sociocultural factors that might have led to the observed set of cohort differences.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the replenishment of the VIR collection with plant genetic resources from the territories of the Philippines, Burma, Laos and Vietnam as a result of plant explorations, seed requests and germplasm exchange. In total, four collecting missions were sent to this region in the late 1970s and 1980s. Through their efforts, 2668 germplasm samples were collected and delivered to the Institute. The most numerous were the accessions of grain legumes (916), followed by vegetables (835) and groat crops (653). In addition to direct collection, the Institute was constantly engaged in requesting plant germplasm. In the prewar period, from 1925 to 1941, 396 accessions of cereal, groat, grain legume, vegetable, industrial and fruit crops were received from Burma, Vietnam, French Indochina (Laos since 1949) and the Philippines. From 1946 to 2019, 7928 accessions were added, with the largest number shipped from Vietnam (7840). Such a huge number can be explained by the activities of the Soviet breeding stations in Lai Châu Province, Northern Vietnam, and near Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Vietnam, in the 1980s and early 1990s. It should be noted that significantly fewer wild species and crop wild relatives were mobilized from these countries than from India, Indonesia and Ceylon – about 100 spp., or 10,992 accessions. Altogether, collecting teams brought from the South Asian tropical center of crop origin 18,594 germplasm samples, most of which were groat crops (4521). The prewar seed requests yielded 3520 accessions, with 1022 representing tropical woody, ornamental and medicinal plants from botanical gardens. Requests for germplasm from 1946 to the present time resulted in adding 16,687 accessions to the collection, half of which were groat crops (rice, maize and sorghum). A total of 39,161 accessions were received from the region.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article introduces the professional activities of Latvian-born Lithuanian architect and engineer Karolis Reisonas (in Latvian: Kārlis Reisons; 1894–1981) in the second half of his life – from 1930 in Kaunas, Panevėžys and Adelaide cities – and his role in the history of Lithuanian architecture. K. Reisonas was one of the most prominent creators of modern 20th-century interwar Lithuanian architecture and together with other famous Lithuanian architects formed a special style of Kaunas modern architecture in interwar period. K. Reisonas is the author or co-author of representative buildings in Šiauliai, Kaunas and other Lithuanian cities, as well as in Riga and Adelaide cities. Architect and engineer K. Reisonas worked as Šiauliai City Engineer and Head of Municipal Construction Department (1922–1930), Director of Šiauliai Vocational School (1926), Consultant of Lithuanian Chamber of Agriculture (1927–1928), Head of Construction Department of Kaunas Municipality (1930–1938), Panevėžys City Engineer (1940) and Burgomaster (1941–1944). From 1949, the Reisonas family lived in Adelaide city, Australia. To his projects three monuments of independence were built in Lithuania – Monument of Independence in Šiauliai city, Podium of the Freedom Monument of Kaunas city and Roman Catholic Christ’s Resurrection Church in Kaunas city. Fourteen of buildings in Lithuania (in Kaunas and Šiauliai cities) designed by him are included in the list of cultural values of Lithuania. Early K. Reisonas’ projects are characterized by historism, elements of eclecticism and «brick style», later projects are characterized by austere rationalism, functionalism, adaptation to urban construction and cultural and historical context.

Abstract:
Summary The Linguistic Society of America was founded in 1925 by scholars trained in traditional philological methods but more interested in building a science of linguistics than in literary studies. Language, the official journal of the new society became an organ for structural descriptions of sound systems of diverse languages. The Linguistic Institute, a summer training program, speeded diffusion of the new structuralist methods. Focus on native speech rather than on literary texts was a hallmark of the ‘application’ of structuralist linguistics to the teaching of languages in military intensive language programs during the Second World War, and in some academic programs (notably at Cornell University) after the war. After the war Language expanded, and a number of other linguistics journals began publishing. The extent to which these other journals were complements and the extent to which they were rivals remains controversial. Patterns of publications follow lines of theoretical divergence within what is sometimes mistakenly regarded as a neo-Bloomfieldian monolith. It is argued that the self-annuling prestige of the linguistic analyst in the process of language learning contributed to the difficulty of establishing a profession based on ‘the science of language’ in the late 1940s and through the 1950s. The analytical role of native speakers in the Bloomfieldian tradition is contrasted with that in the Sapirian tradition.
