Abstract:

We have analyzed records of glacier-front variations, mass-balance reconstructions, temperature and precipitation data of Alpine stations, and found that the difference between summer and winter temperature in connection with winter precipitation is a useful indicator of glacier activity. Application of this parameter to the records of six stations since 1860 indicated the advance around 1920 had been preceded by a decade with frequent positive mass balances, while the period 1928–64 was characterized by increased climatic continentality and strong, uniform glacier retreats.

Abstract:
The occurrence of 3-chloropropane-1,2-diol fatty acid esters (bound 3-MCPD) in French fries and potato chips is reported. These products belong to the group of foodstuffs with high amount of 3-MCPD esters. Bound 3-MCPD was determined in all analysed samples in following concentrations: pre-frying French fries 27–64 μg/kg, French fries (final product) 100–258 μg/kg and potato chips 229–1008 μg/kg. Palm oil used for frying potato chips was analysed as well and the bound 3-MCPD levels ranged from 654 to 1920 μg/kg. 3-MCPD esters are formed in these products as a consequence of the processing technique. Especially frying oil represents the main source of these contaminants in frying potato products.

Abstract:
A high-performance versatile motion estimation processor with regular hardware and control structure capable of MP@HL is presented. It can compute 1920 × 1080 pels in 4096 cycles within search point range 64 with eight identical processors. The presented processor has 100% hardware utilization by eliminating the computation delay between stages, and the capability to compute half pel precision motion estimation. Also, by enhancing image data reuse, the I/O bottleneck problem is alleviated. With efficient scalability, the amount of hardware and computation speed can be easily adjusted for a variety of application areas. The proposed edge effect hardware can be used for object-based coding for MPEG-4. The processor was verified with C ++ and VHDL based on actual image data and implemented with 0.6μm gate array. Also, a motion estimator system with image memories and PC host interface was designed.

Abstract:
Abstract Babesia microti (Bm) is a tick-borne intra-erythrocytic parasite endemic in NE and the upper Midwest. Although primarily a tick-borne disease, Bm has been transmitted by transfusion in at least 50 documented cases. Symptoms include fever, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia, typically arising 2–8 weeks following transfusion. In order to assess the risk of Bm transmission by blood transfusion in Connecticut (CT), we tested a repository of donor and recipient samples collected in 2004–2007. METHODS: The repository consisted of frozen whole blood and serum samples collected generally 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after blood transfusions in a chronically transfused population, along with associated donor serum samples, collected at blood drives in CT. All recipient follow-up samples were screened for antibodies to Babesia microti by IFA, as were the initial samples of any seropositive recipient, using a 1:64 cut-off titer. If recipients tested IFA positive after being seronegative (seroconversion), corresponding donor sera were screened for Bm antibody to identify transfusion-transmission. Stored DNA from serial seroconverting recipient samples were also assessed by real-time PCR for Bm. We defined an evaluable transfusion for Bm as a platelet or RBC transfusion with at least one follow-up sample 14–180 days later. 107 recipients received evaluable transfusions. Altogether these recipients received 1920 evaluable RBC transfusions and 1634 evaluable platelet transfusions. RESULTS: All follow-up samples were seronegative for Bm except for a single follow-up sample in a recipient with sickle cell anemia transfused with 45 RBC over 24 months. This sample was reproducibly seropositive in 2 labs with a titer of 1:64 and was PCR negative. Blood samples 6 weeks before and 11 weeks after the seropositive sample were seronegative, but PCR +. To investigate, 11 earlier recipient samples taken 5–21 months before the seroconversion were tested and all were seronegative, although 2/11 were PCR + (one strongly positive). Donor serum samples from 18/21 RBC transfused prior to the strongly PCR + recipient sample were negative for Bm. Three donor samples were not available. The recipient reported no exposure to ticks and lived in a non-endemic area of Connecticut. The patient had received 41 units of red cells in the two years before enrollment in the study. There were no clinical symptoms attributable to Bm. CONCLUSION: This may be a case of transfusion-transmitted Babesia microti, despite our inability to identify a seropositive blood donor. However, the recipient may have acquired Bm from a tick bite or from earlier transfusions. The risk of Babesia microti transmission by transfusion in CT has thus been measured either as zero cases in 1920 RBC transfusions (95% CI 0.0 - 0.0016 per RBC) or as 1 case per 1920 RBC transfusions (0.005, CI 0.000013 - 0.0029 per RBC). A previous report (Gerber, et al. JID1994; 170:231–234) directly measured the risk of transfusion transmission of Babesia microti in CT as 1 in 601 RBC (.0017). A recent risk estimate based on the prevalence of PCR positive CT donor samples is 1/1800 RBC (0.0006) (Cable RG, et al. Transfusion2001: 41(suppl):12S–13S.) This current study of chronically transfused recipients is consistent with these earlier estimates.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTFrom a “successful aging” perspective, the subjective feeling of well-being is as important as “objective” health. Physical exercise is seen as being an effective way of staying healthy, but its link with well-being in a normal aging population remains largely unexplored. Based on two randomized surveys of the aging population, conducted in 1979 and 1994, respectively, with questionnaires including retrospective questions on activities and health, two cohorts of young-old (aged 64–74) were selected (cohort 1, born 1905–1914, N = 949; cohort 2, born 1920–1929, N = 602) and split into four groups, corresponding to their exercising trajectories (long-term exercisers LE, new exercisers NE, quitters Q, sedentary S). The link between the four trajectories and two indicators of well-being (self-rated health, self-assessed depression scale) was examined by means of regression analyses. In both cohorts, the LE group had a higher level of well-being than the Q and the S. The study also throws light on the case of the quitters (Q), who showed the lowest level of well-being. Scant research has hitherto been done on the causes and repercussions of abandoning exercise.

Abstract:
Thyroglossal duct cysts often present in childhood but can also afflict the adult population. In 1920, Sistrunk described surgical management and advocated the removal of the central portion of the hyoid bone, following the cyst tract to the base of the tongue. This surgical technique has not changed since its description 60 years ago. In this paper, a retrospective review of 70 thyroglossal duct cyst excisions performed at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1988 through 1996 is presented. The patient population consisted of 43 females (61 %) and 27 males (39%). The average age at presentation was 21.5 years, with a range of 18 months to 64 years. The most frequent presenting symptom was a painless midline neck mass. Computed tomography (CT) was the most frequent imaging study performed. Sixty-four patients underwent a Sistrunk procedure while five patients had excision alone. One patient was diagnosed but lost to follow-up. All five patients who underwent simple cystectomy required a second procedure. One patient who underwent the Sistrunk operation required revision. Nine patients had postoperative complications, with recurrence being the most common. We present our experience over an eight-year period.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTOn 12 January 1921 the British Imperial Antarctic Expedition 1920–1922 led by 27 year old Cambridge graduate John Lachlan Cope, arrived at Paradise Harbour situated west of Andvord Bay on the Danco Coast, Graham Land. The four-man party was landed by Norwegian whalers, on a small island with a promontory they named ‘Water-boat Point’ now Waterboat Point (64°49’S, 62°52’E), because of an abandoned water-boat there. Fortunately ready accommodation was available in the boat and to this were attached cases of provisions to form an improvised hut with an extension added before winter. Cope and Wilkins his deputy leader stayed just six weeks and after helping to build the hut, in effect abandoned the other two members of the expedition, Bagshawe and Lester. The two men voluntarily remained and in the belief that they would be paid, vigorously pursued a varied scientific programme. Although lacking essential items including certain scientific instruments, they were comparatively well off until relieved by Norwegian whalers in January 1922. The expedition that lasted one year and a day and was supported logistically by Norwegian whalers, became the smallest British expedition to overwinter in Antarctica and was the only expedition at that time. Bagshawe and Lester produced an impressive record of observations in meteorology, biology, oceanography, glaciology, botany and geology. In 1951 when Chile established Presidente González Videla Station, remains of the water-boat and hut were present, but today little evidence remains of the site destroyed by natural processes, human intervention and buried by guano. With exception of a few papers and chapters in books, Two men in the Antarctic (Bagshawe 1939) remains the definitive work on this generally forgotten expedition. For this paper primary resources have focused on original manuscripts. Although much material including financial records if indeed they existed, has been lost, surviving documents provide insights into the expedition. Reasons for the eventual loss of Bagshawe and Lester's field station are discussed.

Abstract:
Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni, the causal agent of bacterial spot on stone fruit, was found in 1995 in several orchards in southeastern France. We studied population genetics of this emerging pathogen in comparison with populations from the United States, where the disease was first described, and from Italy, where the disease has occurred since 1920. Four housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, efp, and glnA) and the intergenic transcribed spacer region were sequenced from a total of 3.9 kb of sequences, and fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (FAFLP) analysis was performed. A collection of 64 X. arboricola pv. pruni strains, including 23 strains from France, was analyzed. The X. arboricola pv. pruni population had a low diversity because no sequence polymorphisms were observed. Population diversity revealed by FAFLP was lower for the West European population than for the American population. The same bacterial genotype was detected from five countries on three continents, a geographic distribution that can be explained by human-aided migration of bacteria. Our data support the hypothesis that the pathogen originated in the United States and subsequently has been disseminated to other stone-fruit-growing regions of the world. In France, emergence of this disease was due to a recent introduction of the most prevalent genotype of the bacterium found worldwide.

The Qur'an, being central to both the Islamic faith and its practice, hasbeen studied in a plethora of orientalist writings-ranging from such a crudelypolemical one as Alexander Ross's English translation of the Qur'an entitledThe Alcoran of Mahomet . . . for the Satisfaction for all those who Desireto look into the Turkish Vanities (1649) to those with scholarly pretensionsand claiming to be "objective" studies, such as Noldeke's Geschichte des Qorans(1860), Goldziher's Die Richtungen der islamischen Koranauslesung (1920),Bell's The Quran translated with a Critical Rearrangement of the Surahs(1937-39), Wansbrough's Quranic Studies (1977), and Burton's The Collectionof the Quran (1977).The book under review, first published in 1983, recounts the full tockof the orientalists' misconceptions, down the ages, about the Qur'an-theiroutlandish theories about its authorship (pp. 7-18), their assaults on its textualhistory and its arrangement (pp. 52-63), their brazen attempts at twistingits meaning in their Qur'an translations (pp. 64-92), and their bizzare viewson abrogation in the Qur'an (pp. 93-104). Khalifa deserves every credit forassembling so much information. What is more remarkable is that it is followedby a stout refutation of these allegations about the form and contents of theQur'an and an extensive, authentic exposition of the Qur'anic teachings, concepts, and morals, all of which constitutes the second part of the book(pp. 111-205). In elucidating the Qur'anic worldview, Khalifa's discussion issubtle, in large part persuasive, tenaciously pursued, and well presented.Appended to the book are two highly informative appendices on the orderof the Qur'an's surahs. This well-intentioned and detailed scholarly study, however, does notreally succeed in delivering what its title promises. In discussing the orientalists'ventures into establishing the chronology of Qur'anic surahs, Khalifa sayslittle about Gustav Fli:lgel's Corani Textus Arabiscus (1834) and the theoriespropounded by Grimme and Hirschfield's New Researches in the Compositionand Exegesis of the Quran (1902). More serious is the lack of any referenceto a host of orientalists' writings on the philological and lexical aspects ofthe Qur'an, namely Baljon's Modern Muslim Quran Interpretation (1961),Torrey's The Commercial-Theological Terms in the Quran (1892), Watt's ...

Abstract:
e23123 Background: Pleural carcinosis caused by tumors of the chest (e.g., lung and breast cancer) or elsewhere in the body (e.g., ovarian carcinoma) that metastasize to the visceral and/or parietal pleura. Recurrent malignant pleural effusion due to pleural carcinosis is one of the most common findings in oncology. The aim of the study was to identify a miRNA signature associated with clinicians’ prescription of patients with MPE. Methods: We used qRT-PCR assay to evaluate a wide range miRNAs (1920 miRNAs) signature measured from pleural effusion between patients with cancer and healthy controls. From the data of our previous studies we selected a panel of 96 miRNAs related to malignant pleural effusion. Data were compared by three classification methods software for statistics and modeling. We used a first set of 77 pleural effusion samples as training group, including 27 patients affected by Lung Adenocarcinomas (LAC), 9 with other lung cancer, 17 with other tumors and 24 inflammatory patients as negative controls. Moreover, we used more 64 pleural effusion samples for double-blind predictive study. Data analysis was performed using a machine learning approach of a Support Vector Machine classifier with a Student's t-test feature selection procedure. Results: We identified a panel of ten miRNAs with optimum classification performance. The combination of these 10-miRNAs alone could discriminate MPE cases from negative controls with an AUC of 0.969 (accuracy = 93.5%; specificity = 91.7%). The selected panel of another 10-miRNAs could separate lung cancer cases from negative controls with an AUC of 0.973 (accuracy = 94.8%; specificity = 95.8%), and a small panel of 4-miRNAs could good discriminate LAC cases from negative controls with an AUC of 0.946 (accuracy 88.9%; specificity = 100%). The accuracy rate of the double-blind predictive sensitivity value was 90.9% and specificity value was 95.8% for MPE patients with lung cancer of miRNA signature. Conclusions: Our miRNAs profile may serve as a new biomarker for MPE diagnosis. Otherwise, we identified a 10-miRNAs signature for MPE patients with lung cancer and a 4-miRNAs for MPE patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract:
Abstract. Two ice core boreholes of 143.18 m and 447.73 m (bedrock) were drilled during the 2009–2010 austral summer on the Bruce Plateau at a location named LARISSA Site Beta (66°02' S, 64°04' W, 1975.5 m a.s.l.). Both boreholes were logged with thermistors shortly after drilling. The shallow borehole was instrumented for 4 months with a series of resistance thermometers with satellite uplink. Surface temperature proxy data derived from an inversion of the borehole temperature profiles are compared to available multi-decadal records from weather stations and ice cores located along a latitudinal transect of the Antarctic Peninsula to West Antarctica. The LARISSA Site Beta profiles show temperatures decreasing from the surface downward through the upper third of the ice, and warming thereafter to the bed. The average temperature for the most recent year is −14.78°C (measured at 15 m depth, abbreviated T15). A minimum temperature of −15.8°C is measured at 173 m depth, and basal temperature is estimated to be −10.2°C. Current mean annual temperature and the gradient in the lower part of the measured temperature profile have a best fit with an accumulation rate of 1.9×103 kg m−2 a−1 and basal heat flux (q) of 88 mW m−2, if steady-state conditions are assumed. However, the mid-level temperature variations show that recent temperature has varied significantly. Reconstructed surface temperatures (Ts=T15) over the last 200 yr are derived by an inversion technique (Tikhonov and Samarskii, 1990). From this, we find that cold temperatures (minimum Ts=−16.2°C) prevailed from ~1920 to ~1940, followed by a gradual rise of temperature to −14.2°C around 1995, then cooling over the following decade and warming in the last few years. The coldest period was preceded by a relatively warm 19th century at T15≥−15°C. To facilitate regional comparisons of the surface temperature history, we use our T15 data and nearby weather station records to refine estimates of lapse rates (altitudinal, adjusted for latitude: Γa(l)). Good temporal and spatial consistency of Γa(l) over the last 35 yr are observed, implying that the climate trends observed here are regional and consistent over a broad altitude range.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) comprises a diverse group of malignancies with varied presentations and clinical behavior. Different prognostic factors have been defined including age, LDH, gender, CNS involvement and molecular/genetic characteristics. We aim to study the incidence and impact of skin involvement as a secondary site in patients with mature B and T-cell NHLs. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was used to identify patients (≥18 years) diagnosed with mature B/T/NK-cell NHL with skin as secondary site of involvement between 1973 and 2014. B-cell and T-cell lymphomas of all stages were included. Overall survival (OS) was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and compared using Log-Rank test. Results: Total of 6429 patients were included with secondary skin involvement. B-cell NHL was more common with 76%. Median age for B-cell and T-cell NHL was 65 years (48-82), and 64 years (46-82), respectively. Slight male preponderance was noted in both subtypes (B-cell-56.7%% and T-cell-61.7%). Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) was the most common histology among B-cell NHLs, (DLBCL, N=1920 39.6%), followed by follicular (FL, N=1381, 28.5%) and extra nodal marginal zone (EN MZL, N=1314, 27.1%) Among T cell NHL histologies, peripheral T-cell NOS was the most common (PTCL, N=819, 51.6%) followed by anaplastic large cell ALK+ (ALCL+, N=341, 21.5%), and Sezary syndrome (N=293, 18.5%) Median overall survival was 6.1 [5.2 - 7.2.; 95% CI] years in T-cell population compared to B-cell population which was 13.3 [12.6-14.0; 95% CI] years. Survival was different by histologic subtype and correlated with SEER database relative survival for the overall population described in the SEER Cancer Statistics Review 1973-2011. Conclusion:- Skin involvement is relatively common in both B and T-cell NHLs. DLBCL, FL, MZL, PTCL-NOS and ALCL+ are the more commonly involved subtypes, correlating with their relative incidences. Outcomes in patients with secondary skin involvement tends to mimic known survival patterns in different histological subtypes conferring no additional prognostic significance. Skin as an extra nodal site of involvement should not change management for these patients. Figure. Figure. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
Abstract: We analyze some of the Italian recreational clubs activities in São Paulo, from the end of the 19th century, when the city was transformed from a colonial village into an industrial metropolis and suffered the impact of the great migrations. Escaping from plantation to the city, workers manage to articulate forms of resistance to exploitation through voluntary associations (newspapers, trade unions and theatre) which fuels a discrimination atmosphere, culminating in racial persecution. Political emancipation has been pursued through art, especially on stage. The patriotic and nationalist values of the Italian Risorgimento that had fuelled a first phase of emigrant literature are gradually replaced by the internationalist “homeless and boss less” society utopia. Keywords: Italian theatre in Brazil; amateur actors; emigration.

Among Chinese writers of the 20th century, Xie Wanying 谢婉莹 (1900–1999), known with her pen name Bing Xin 冰心, has been considered by literary critics as “the writer of love” and “the philosopher of love”. Nevertheless, this label seems to have ignored an element that could let us identify important conflicts within her works, that can be attributed to her contacts and relations with people and institutions linked to the Christian faith. Therefore, in the first period of Bing Xin’s literary production (1920–1930), this peculiar aspect of Western culture, the Christian belief, seems to be for her the expression of a definitely alternative and unconventional way to achieve truth in the early 20th century China.

Abstract:
Despite ongoing turbulence in international relations, Arctic is reasonably considered to be a region of stability. This is possible not least due to a state of legal certainty in the region, which enables the Arctic governance to be predictable and transparent. Some topical issues, however, remain unsolved. One of them is the Svalbard case. By signing the Paris Treaty 1920, the parties recognized Norway’s sovereignty over the archipelago with several restrictions granting other signatories equal rights to engage in commercial activities on the islands, a special taxation regime, etc. However, since the times of the Treaty, the world economy and the international law had been actively developing, with fishing interests of coastal states and technologies for deep-seabed mining emerging. Such legal notions as Exclusive Economic Zones and Continental Shelf were adopted after 1920, and certainly could not have been regulated by the Paris Treaty. This rose the question of applicability of the Svalbard Treaty to the maritime zones off the islands, causing significant international attention and controversies. Since the late 1970s, Norway has been insisting that the provisions of the Treaty do not apply to the existing and potential maritime zones off Svalbard. Russia, Iceland, Spain, UK and some other countries disagree. The issue of maritime boundaries of the 1920 Treaty remains unsolved. It is obvious though, that the absence of a clear regulatory regime for fishing and deep-seabed mining in Svalbard’s waters is not in the interests of the Arctic states (especially in case of joint fish stocks of the Arctic Ocean). That is why it would be reasonable if the Arctic countries initiate informal consultations with other stakeholders. Though one should not expect fast achievements of this process, any positive and constructive advance would in the end contribute to strengthening the legal certainty and predictability for this region.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Sokal risk formulation was elaborated 25 years ago, based on very simple factors (age, spleen size, platelet count, and percentage of myeloblasts in the peripheral blood), based on patients treated with conventional chemotherapy. In spite of that, Sokal risk score is still the major prognostic factor for response to treatment with the tyrosine kinase inhibitor, Imatinib mesylate (IM). Since several preclinical, pharmacokinetic and clinical studies suggested that the therapeutic efficacy of IM may be concentration/dose–dependent, we assigned prospectively 217 adult patients with Ph pos CML, Sokal high risk (SHR), to be treated front line with IM 400 mg or 800 mg (Clin.Trials Gov. NCT00514488), comparing the cytogenetic and the molecular response rates at 3, 6, and 12 months. Cytogenetic response was evaluated by chromosome banding analysis (CBA) of marrow metaphases, and by FISH analysis of marrow cells in case of insufficient metaphase number. Molecular response was evaluated by RT-Q-PCR (PB), according to the international scale. The results are shown in Table 1. No difference between the two arms was significant at any time point. In the 400 mg arm, the median daily dose of IM was 400 mg, with 87% of patients receiving 350 to 400 mg. In the 800 mg arm, the median daily dose of IM was 720 mg, with 63% of patients receiving 600 to 800 mg. The CCgR rate was 86%, vs 66% in the patients who received a median daily dose of 600 to 800 or less than 600 mg daily, respectively (p=0.013). With a median follow up of 31 months (range 1–49 months), progression-free and overall survival are higher than 90% in both arms. Based on an intention-to-treat analysis, this study did not show a significant benefit of 800 mg over 400 mg in SHR patients, but the patients who could comply with the high dose had a better cytogenetic outcome. 3 months 6 months 12 months 400 800 400 800 400 800 (1)Refusal, or lost to follow-up, or protocol violations (2)Failure was defined according to the ELN recommendations (Baccarani et al, Blood2006;108:1809–1920) (3)No Ph pos metaphases out of at least 20 marrow cell metaphases, by CBA, or < 1% BCR-ABL positivity out of at least 200 marrow cells, by FISH (4)BCR-ABL:ABL < 0.10 and < 0.005 by RT-Q-PCR, converted to the International Scale. Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 1920 Background. Understanding of leukemia biology and advances in the transplant field have improved the safety as well as access of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for a larger number of patients (pts) affected by acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The trend of growth of HCTs in adult pts with AML can be expected to continue based on acceptance and availability of alternative donor. Few data are available for: i) the reliable estimates of the number of HCT for AML and the total number of AML pts for whom HCT is appropriate, ii) the choice of the different donor sources. A risk-adapted treatment strategy is crucial to improve the outcome of pts with AML. Our policy is to offer a haploidentical HCT to adult pts lacking a matched donor in the appropriate time according to clinical indications (www.leukemianet.org, www.ebmt.org). This policy is integrated in ongoing protocols for primary disease (www.nilg.it). Methods. Here we are reporting the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis of HCT in all consecutive AML pts referred to our Institution between January 2004 and April 2012. Classification, prognostic evaluation, response criteria and survival outcomes for AML were defined according to the standard recommendation of the European LeukemiaNet (Dohner H et al, Blood. 2010: 115:453–474). Results. Indication to HCT was given to 241 pts (median age 52y, r17-72, 66 pts over-60y; male 138). HCT was performed in 201/241 pts (median time from diagnosis to HCT 222 days, median time from HCT-indication to HCT 80 days), 24/201 pts received a second HCT due to disease relapse. Pts distribution according to ITT algorithm is reported in figure 1. In ITT analysis, 83,4% of candidate pts received an HCT. Characteristic related to pts/disease/transplant are reported in table 1. Noteworthy, pts in 1st complete remission (CR1) are evenly distributed according to donor source (namely HLA-matched sibling donor – MSD, unrelated donor – URD, haploidentical related donor - haplo-HCT). The overall survival (OS) analysis for pts transplanted in CR is 71% at 1y and 56% at 3y, for pts in morphologic leukemia free state (MLFS) 32% and 21%, for pts in relapse 23% and 11% (p<0.0001). The relapse incidence (RI) for pts in CR at 1y and 3y is 17% and 21%, for pts in MLFS 43% and 43%, for pts in relapse 35% and 36% (p0.00205). The 1–3y transplant related mortality (TRM) is 16%-28% for CR pts, 31%-44% for MLFS pts, 48%-53% for relapse pts (p<0.0001). The comparison between pts transplanted in 1st CR versus (vs) 2nd CR shows: 1–3y OS 75%-64% vs 64%-44% (p0.0152), 1–3y RI 9%-12% vs 25%-30% (p0.008), while TRM is superimposable. For pts transplanted in CR, the 1–3y OS according to donor source (MSD, URD, haplo-HCT) is 76%-57% vs 68%-59% vs 69%-53% (p ns) – figure 2; the 1–3y TRM is 23%-37% vs 12%-18% vs 16%-28% (p ns); the 1–3y RI is 7%-14% vs 20%-23% vs 20%-22% (p ns). For pts in 1st CR, the 1–3y OS according to donor source (MSD, URD, haplo-HCT) is 68%-53% vs 86%-73% vs 72%-67% (p ns). TRM and RI are superimposable. For pts in any CR, the 1–3y OS according to disease characteristics (primary AML vs therapy related AML vs AML with myelodysplasia related changes) is 73%-60% vs 50%-50% vs 59%-46% (p ns). For pts transplanted in relapse, the 1 OS according to donor source (MSD, URD, haplo-HCT) is 21% vs 33% vs 21% (p ns), TRM and RI are superimposable, long term survivors are present only in haplo-setting (5y OS 10%). Conclusion. For many pts with high risk AML, HCT from a MSD provides the best chance for long-term survival. However, only approximately 30% of individuals have a MSD. In our experience, the option of HCT for adults with AML is no longer limited to those pts with MSD thanks to the exploitation of an high-committed strategy of donor search for pts in need and of haplo-HCT as alternative donor source. Haplo-HCT offers a concrete option of cure to AML pts: outcome results (OS TRM RI) are superimposable to MSD and URD in any setting, noteworthy in 1st CR and regardless of disease characteristics. Abstract:

Abstract:
This research article focuses on characterization of Volunteer Army officers who fought in the Russian Civil War being part of the White armies of South Russia. Quoted memoirs by Major General Konstantin A. Kelner reveal inner relationships and image of the 1st Volunteer Army Corps units of the Armed Forces of South Russia in 1918–1920. An analysis of this historical document has been made and the first full-scale biography of the memoirist has been introduced. The memoirs written by Kelner in 1930 provide a detailed description of the best known «colored» (for their uniforms) regiments of the Volunteer Army: Drozdovites, Markovites, Kornilovites and Alekseevites. The general doesn’t focus just on the glitzy front of their life, but also on negative aspects of the Volunteer movement, which deserves special attention

Abstract:
A complex of leaf-spotting diseases—tan spot, the Septoria complex, spot blotch, and powdery mildew—are frequently observed on winter wheat in western Canada; however, there are few studies indicating varietal differences in reaction to these diseases or the benefit of fungicide application. To determine the benefit of varietal improvement and multiple fungicide treatments and application timings, field experiments were conducted at six site-years in western Canada. Two cultivars varying in reaction to leaf spot diseases were used in combination with fungicide treatments. Disease severity ranged from trace to 64% of the combined flag and penultimate leaf area diseased, differed between cultivars, and was reduced from the check by some fungicide treatments. Yield improvement by fungicide treatment varied from 3.3 to 13.2% greater than the nontreated check. At two site-years, the split application of two half rates of fungicide resulted in the greatest yield; however, in both cases, the yield benefit did not differ from a single application at the flag leaf growth stage. Cultivar selection and fungicide use under environments conducive to disease are beneficial components of an integrated leaf spot disease management program for winter wheat in western Canada.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract Background Rituximab (R) maintenance therapy bimonthly until progression has been shown in a recent randomized study to prolong duration of remission (with median follow-up of 37 months) and overall survival in elderly patients (pts) with MCL after R-CHOP, but not after R-FC, induction therapy (Kluin-Nelemans et al, N Engl J Med 2012; 367:520-31). We have previously reported initial results of 60 elderly pts with MCL treated with induction therapy consisting of 10 cycles of alternating standard CHOP and intermediate-dose AraC (combining fludarabine in 3 cycles) with 8 doses of R, followed by bimonthly R maintenance for 2 years (yrs) (Räty et al. Leuk Lymphoma 2012; 53:1920-8). High response rate to induction therapy with ORR of 95% (CR/CRu 87%) was seen. PFS was 70% and OS 72% at 4 yrs with the median follow-up of 40 months. Herein, we update our results of this prospective study with completed maintenance therapy in all pts with a median follow-up time of 6 yrs for surviving pts. Methods The pts were recruited at 10 Finnish centres during Dec 2004 and Aug 2010. Eligible pts were > 65 yrs old with histologically confirmed newly diagnosed (WHO criteria, CD5+, CD19/20+, Cyclin D1+) and previously untreated stage II-IV MCL with adequate organ functions and performance status (WHO) <4. Induction: standard dose R-CHOP (cycles 1, 3, 5), R-AraC (R 375 mg/m2 x1, AraC 1 g/ m2 4 doses with 12 hrs intervals; cycles 2, 4), R-AraC with fludarabine (F) (F 25 mg/m2 2 doses, cycles 6-8), CHOP (cycles 9, 10). Maintenance for pts in CR/PR: R 375 mg/m2 bimonthly x 12. Response was evaluated according to Cheson’s criteria after 5th, 8th and 10th cycle, every 6 months during maintenance and 1 year follow-up, and clinically for later follow-up every 6 months. Median follow-up time at the time of this analysis was 70 months (range 41 – 113 months) for living pts. Results At the time of diagnosis the median age of 60 recruited pts was 74 yrs (range 65-83), 62% were males, 97% had advanced disease (stage III-IV), 77% had good performance status (PS 0-1). Most (87%) had a history of some other notable illness, most typically cardiovascular disease. Another cancer had been diagnosed earlier in 9 pts (prostate n=3, breast n=3, other n=3). The MIPI risk was low in 2%, intermediate in 45% and high in 53% of the pts, respectively. ORR was 95% (CR/CRu n= 52, PR n=5, PD n=2). One patient could not be evaluated for response due to withdrawal of consent after the first cycle. Seven pts did not receive R maintenance (died/progressed/relapsed during induction n=5, withdrawal of consents n= 2). All 12 doses were given to 34 of 53 pts (64%, CR/CRu n=32, PR n=2). Four pts discontinued maintenance due to recurrent infections / neutropenia,10 pts due to relapse and 5 due to other reasons (secondary MDS n=1, general fatigue n=2, unknown n=2). A transient grade 4 neutropenia was seen in 20 pts during maintenance with no serious infections. HZV or VZV infections were recorded in 9 pts. Altogether 22 of responding pts have progressed/relapsed (during induction n=2, during maintenance n=10, during follow-up n=10), 6 of them with isolated CNS relapse. Twenty-one pts have died (sudden cardiac death during induction n=1, progressive MCL n=17, secondary MDS/AML n=1, unknown n=2). At 6 yrs (intention to treat) PFS was 64% (median 97 months, 95% CI 75 – 120 months), EFS 59% (median 95 months, 95% CI 75 – 114 months) and OS 62% (median not reached), respectively. DFS was 72% at 6 yrs (median 91 months, 95% CI 89 – 93 months) for 52 pts in CR/CRu. Two pts have developed secondary MDS (at 27 and 67 months). Eight new cancers (prostate n=3, breast n=1 and skin n=4) have been recorded in 6 patients during maintenance or follow-up. Conclusions Long PFS and OS over 60% at 6 yrs with median DFS of more than 7 yrs can be achieved with prolonged cytarabine-containing immunochemotherapy followed by 2 yrs R maintenance in elderly pts with MCL. Maintenance therapy was well tolerated in general. Transient neutropenia during maintenance was not uncommon, but serious infections were not seen and only 4 pts discontinued maintenance therapy because of recurrent neutropenia or infections. Attention for second malignancies is requested as 9 pts had cancer before MCL diagnosis, MDS/AML was developed in 2 pts and 6 pts showed carcinomas during follow-up in this elderly patient population.
