Abstract:
Duguetia Saint-Hilaire (1825: 35) comprises 94 species, 89 of which occur in the Neotropics, and the remaining four in Africa (Maas et al. 2003, Maas & Westra, 2010). It is placed in Duguetieae with Duckeanthus Fries (1934: 106), Fusaea Safford (1914: 64), Letestudoxa Pellegrin (1920: 654) and Pseudartabotrys Pellegrin (1920: 656), all in Annonoideae (Chatrou et al. 2012). Duguetia is one of the best represented genera of Annonaceae in the Brazilian flora and is recognized by the stellate and/or lepidote trichomes and aggregate fruits (Maas et al. 2003).

Abstract:

Abstract:
We have analyzed records of glacier-front variations, mass-balance reconstructions, temperature and precipitation data of Alpine stations, and found that the difference between summer and winter temperature in connection with winter precipitation is a useful indicator of glacier activity. Application of this parameter to the records of six stations since 1860 indicated the advance around 1920 had been preceded by a decade with frequent positive mass balances, while the period 1928–64 was characterized by increased climatic continentality and strong, uniform glacier retreats.

The purpose of the dissertation is to analyse the Brazilian development in the Twentieth Century beyond Celso Furtado work. The paper utilizes of two historical Brazilian moments, and the Cold War as a background, conditions that gave to Furtado the chance to create theories to explain the limits of development in peripheral nations, according the Center Periphery Theory, also in the dissertation. Divided two moments of analyses in the Brazilian history, the first one before the Military Coup in 1964, and the second in later years , we seek to know what Furtado positions in his work, in selected books. To answer the question, why Brazil, and other nations outside the Center, didn´t get, or don´t get a similar development as the countries considered rich, in Celso Furtado vision, is one of the goals of the research, among the future comparison of his arguments and theories in both historical periods.

Abstract:
The ruined city known locally as Salhiyeh was virtually unknown to western scholarship until the twentieth century (Sarre and Herzfeld 1920, 386–95; Kaizer 2017, 64), but its ancient identity remained unknown until the aftermath of the World War I when collapse of the Ottoman empire saw Britain and France divide up much of the Middle East between them (Velud 1988; Barr 2011). As we saw, during operations against Arabs resisting the new western occupation, British-commanded Indian troops bivouacking at the site dug defensive positions and accidentally revealed wall paintings. These were seen and published by visiting American archaeologist James Henry Breasted (Breasted 1922; 1924), who first identified the ruins as those of the historically attested but unlocated ‘Dura . . . called Europos by the Greeks’ (Isidore of Charax, Parthian Stations, 1). The site thereafter fell inside the newly imposed borders of French-controlled Syria (Velud 1988). More substantial excavations were conducted and published with exemplary speed by Franz Cumont in 1922–3 (Cumont 1926), paving the way for the great Yale University/French Academy expedition overseen by Mikhail Rostovtzeff. This ran over ten seasons: (Dates from the Preliminary Reports, and Hopkins 1979, xxii–xxiv, except ninth and tenth seasons from information in Yale archives provided by Megan Doyon and Richard A. Grossmann.) With a Roman military presence attested from the outset, further traces were encountered throughout the city’s exploration, with the heart of the military base area being identified and excavated in the fifth season, and the great ‘Palace of the dux ripae’ in the ninth. While masterminded by Rostovtzeff, and more nominally Cumont, these giants actually only briefly visited the excavations on a couple of occasions. The dig was conducted under a series of field directors: Maurice Pillet, Clark Hopkins, and finally Frank Brown. These led a small team of American and European architects, artists, and archaeologists, mostly male (although women occupied prominent places on the team, including Yale graduate student Margaret Crosby and most notably Hopkins’s wife Susan); they were mostly young and inexperienced (including Hopkins and Brown).

Abstract:
The history of archaeology in Brazil has been divided into phases following different criteria. Most authors consider that archaeology should have its own disciplinary history, not tied to the overall political history of the country. A. Prous (1992) identified five periods and A. Mendonça de Souza (1991) followed the same disciplinary history approach, but proposed only four periods. The history of archaeology in Brazil should not, however, be considered independent from Brazilian history. Because the development of archaeology’s practice, theory, and methodology depends directly on the socio-political conditions in a given country, it is possible to relate the social practice of archaeology and political changes. As with any intellectual endeavour, archaeological activities are the result of social conditions and relations prevailing in different periods. Thus we can say that archaeology in Brazil went through seven phases: the colonial period (1500–1822); the Brazilian empire (1822–89); the early republic (1889–1920s); the formative period (1920–49); the inception of university research (1950–64); the military period, and the constitution of an archaeological establishment (1964–85); and current trends, democratic and pluralist archaeology (1985 onwards). There are few references in colonial sources to archaeological sites, although F. Cardim (1925) notes that shell mounds were identified in Brazil by their Tupi name sambaquis as early as 1583, and F. Coelho’s soldiers, as early as 1598, mention rock inscriptions (Prous 1992: 5). However, travellers and writers such as Y. d’Euvreux (1985), G. Soares (1944), G. Carvajal (1942), A. Thevet (1944) and H. Staden (1930), among others, described native inhabitants and their culture, furnishing a lot of data on Indian material culture. Thanks to these sources, it is possible to study native settlements while taking into full account the historic evidence relating to the following areas: the East Amazon basin area, Porro 1992; Taylor 1992; Erikson 1992; Wright 1992; the North Amazon region, Farage and Santilli 1992; Menéndez 1992; Amoroso 1992; the South Amazon area, Perrone-Moisés 1992; Franchetto 1992; Lopes da Silva 1992; the north-east, Paraíso 1992; Dantas, Sampaio, and Carvalho 1992; the south-west, Carvalho 1992; the south, Monteiro 1992; Kern 1982; the entire country, Fausto 1992.
