Abstract:
The spin-off enterprises are the connection between the university and the market. The one of them, the VOLVO, was founded in 1920. The number of spin-off enterprises has grown since the eighties, primarily in the USA. In our days there are about 3500 firms. We have not any information about the situation in Hungary, but we know that in Szeged there are 36 spin-off enterprises. In our work we presented the BIOPOLISZ Innovation Services Ltd., and its programme. After it we analysed the BIOPOLISZ's spin-off firms.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 1997 a 121 m ice core was retrieved from Lomonosovfonna, the highest ice field in Spitsbergen, Svalbard (1250 m a.s.l.). Radar measurements indicate an ice depth of 126.5 m, and borehole temperature measurements show that the ice is below the melting point. High-resolution sampling of major ions, oxygen isotopes and deuterium has been performed on the core, and the results from the uppermost 36 m suggest that quasi-annual signals are preserved. The 1963 radioactive layer is situated at 18.5–18.95 m, giving a mean annual accumulation of 0.36 m w.e. for the period 1963–96. The upper 36 m of the ice core was dated back to 1920 by counting layers provided by the seasonal variations of the ions in addition to using a constant accumulation rate, with thinning by pure shear according to Nye (1963). The stratigraphy does not seem to have been obliterated by meltwater percolation, in contrast to most previous core sites on Svalbard. The anthropogenic influence on the Svalbard environment is illustrated by increased levels of sulphate, nitrate and acidity. Both nitrate and sulphate levels started to increase in the late 1940s, remained high until the late 1980s and have decreased during the last 15 years. The records of δ18O, MSA (methane-sulphonic acid), and melt features along the core agree with the temperature record from Longyearbyen and the sea-ice record from the Barents Sea at a multi-year resolution, suggesting that this ice core reflects local climatic conditions.

Abstract:
Two new species of the African characiform genus Nannocharax Günther, 1867 are described from the Cross River in Cameroon. Nannocharax zebra sp. nov. is distinguished from all other described Nannocharax species except N. schoutedeni Poll, 1939, N. latifasciatus Coenen & Teugels, 1989, N. ansorgii Boulenger, 1911 and N. procatopus Boulenger, 1920 by a shorter distance between the posterior border of the anus and the articulation of the first anal-fin ray (2.2–3.7 vs. 4.2–14.2% of SL). It differs from N. schoutedeni by having 39–43 vs. 36 or 37 lateral line scales, from N. latifasciatus by a deeper caudal peduncle (55.9–63.8% vs. 48.1–50.8% of SL), from N. ansorgii by having 12 or 13 rather than 9 anal-fin rays, and from N. procatopus by having a shorter caudal peduncle (11.3–15.2% vs. 18.0% of SL), and by having 39–43 rather than 36 lateral line scales. Nannocharax usongo sp. nov. is distinguished from all other Nannocharax species mainly in the distance from the border of anus to the articulation of first anal-fin ray (0.9–1.8 vs. 2.2–14.2% of SL) and by its body coloration consisting of 7–11 dark blotches along the lateral line often coalesced to one wide black band, and 7–12 small saddle-blotches along the dorsum.

Abstract:
Aim To examine past Florence Nightingale Medal recipients’ parallels with the evolving nature of the nursing field as a whole. Design Descriptive research. Method The professional and demographic characteristics of 1,449 Florence Nightingale Medal recipients between 1920 and 2015 were analyzed to develop a high-level overview of the award recipient characteristics. Result Medal recipients were primarily female (98.07%), with 36% being Specialist nurses. Awards were mainly conferred for aid work (30.4%) in the context of war or armed conflict followed by Nursing education (17.2%) and disaster aid (14.9%). The majority of recipients were affiliated with the Red Cross and the majority of recipients were those conducting Red Cross duties. Conclusion Our results offer statistical validation for the dedication of these exceptional individuals, while also highlighting overall parallels with the ongoing development of the nursing field as it expands to better deliver culturally-sensitive care and to overcome outdated stereotypes that would otherwise constrain innovation.

Full text
Abstract:
This article aims to expand on our knowledge of interpreting and interpreters in the early years of the Republic of Estonia’s creation of symbolic capital (1918–1940). The authors’ point of departure is the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s definition of symbolic capital. She has researched the evolution in interpreting in Estonia during three phases (1918–1940, 1944–1991 and 1991 to the present day) and, although the article is limited to diplomatic interpreting and the growth of the newly independent Republic of Estonia’s symbolic capital via interpreting in diplomatic intercourse, it represents a new approach in the descriptive history of interpretation in Estonia. During that period, diplomatic interpreting supported the Republic of Estonia’s aspirations to be recognised and accepted as an independent state in world politics. The years 1918–1940 were studied by analysing 36 memoirs, newspaper articles covering interpreting from the Estonian Literary Museum’s collection, diplomatic correspondence as well as the minutes of the Tartu Peace negotiations with Russia in 1919–1920, which are preserved in the State Archive of Estonia.

Full text
Abstract:
Spatially explicit, wall-to-wall rainfall data provide foundational climatic information but alone are inadequate for characterizing meteorological, hydrological, agricultural, or ecological drought. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is one of the most widely used indicators of drought and defines localized conditions of both drought and excess rainfall based on period-specific (e.g., 1-month, 6-month, 12-month) accumulated precipitation relative to multi-year averages. A 93-year (1920–2012), high-resolution (250 m) gridded dataset of monthly rainfall available for the State of Hawai‘i was used to derive gridded, monthly SPI values for 1-, 3-, 6-, 9-, 12-, 24-, 36-, 48-, and 60-month intervals. Gridded SPI data were validated against independent, station-based calculations of SPI provided by the National Weather Service. The gridded SPI product was also compared with the U.S. Drought Monitor during the overlapping period. This SPI product provides several advantages over currently available drought indices for Hawai‘i in that it has statewide coverage over a long historical period at high spatial resolution to capture fine-scale climatic gradients and monitor changes in local drought severity.

Abstract:
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Multitemporal drone surveys are a perfect tool to determine various geometric and spectral crop parameters for rapid phenotyping in field trials. Depending on the geometric resolution and the size of the crop, information at leaf level or canopy level can be obtained. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate which geometric properties can be automatically derived from high resolution drone imagery during the vegetation period. For this research approx. 1920 cauliflower with a large genetic variety were planted and monitored by five different drone surveys at an altitude of 20&amp;thinsp;m, using a high resolution 36 Mpix. RGB-camera. In order to minimize intensive radiometric calibration, BRDF effects and eliminate shade, flights were carried out at overcast skies. After photogrammetric image processing, detailed crop height models (CHM) were computed. 10 distinct crop parameters were derived from a combination of the orthophotos, the CHM and additional information. According to the phenological phase a specific set of parameters was developed for every flight. For instance, the position of the individual plants is computed right after the first flight. For the flight prior to harvesting, an algorithm for the head diameter and the curvature of the cauliflower heads was developed. Geometric parameters are generally better suited for automation, because they require less specific ground truth or reference information, than spectrally derived biophysical parameters.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
405 Background: Standard treatment options for stage IIA/B seminoma include either extensive paraaortal/pelvic radiotherapy or intensive chemotherapy with 3x BEP or 4x EP. Both treatment modalities are associated with excellent efficacy but also a high rate of acute and late toxicities. Therefore, de-escalation strategies appear warranted for this patient group aiming to minimize acute and long-term toxicities while maintaining efficacy. SAKK 01/10 is a joint project of the Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research and the German Testicular Cancer Study Group. Methods: Patients with stage IIA/B seminoma (de novo or relapse on active surveillance) were eligible for participation in this single arm phase II trial. A repeat scan was advised in patients with equivocal lymph node enlargement. Treatment consisted of one cycle carboplatin AUC7 followed by involved-node radiotherapy with 30 Gy in stage IIA and 36 Gy in stage IIB disease. The primary endpoint of the trial is 3-year progression free survival. We report on treatment compliance and early toxicity during treatment and within 30 days. Results: 120 patients with stage IIA/B seminoma were recruited from 10/12 until 06/18 in 20 study centers in Switzerland and Germany. 116 patients were eligible and initiated treatment per protocol (40% stage IIA, 60% stage IIB). All patients received chemotherapy (CT) with a median applied dose of 984 mg (range: 560-1920 mg). The median planning target volume (PTV) for radiotherapy (RT) was 297 cm3 (range: 24-1047 cm3). RT was delayed/interrupted in two patients due to adverse events. During CT, grade 2 and grade 3 adverse events were seen in 21% and 2% of all patients respectively (most common grade 2 events: neutropenia 6%, nausea 5%). During RT, grade 2 and grade 3 adverse events were seen in 26% and 6% of all patients respectively (most common grade 2 events: neutropenia 15%, nausea 6%). One case of transient creatinine increase was reported as a severe adverse event, resolving without sequelae. Conclusions: Treatment with one cycle carboplatin AUC7 and 30-36 Gy involved-node radiotherapy for stage IIA/B seminoma is feasible and demonstrates a very favorable early toxicity profile. Clinical trial information: NCT01593241.

Abstract:
Background: Social status is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence and incidence. Aims: to investigate relationships between socioeconomic position (SEP) and common CVD biomarkers including adiponectin not previously investigated in a Swedish-population sample, and to assess if these associations changed with age. Design: Population-based longitudinal cohort study of men born 1920–24 with clinical measurements, blood samples, questionnaire data, and register-based information on SEP and cause of death. Methods: A total of 2322 men attended an investigation at age 50 of which 1221 attended a reinvestigation at age 70. Association between SEP and CVD biomarkers [cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein (LDL/HDL), apolipoprotein (Apo) ApoB/ApoA1, and adiponectin] were analysed by linear regression (adjusted for age, body mass index, and physical activity). SEP was measured as occupational class and educational level. CVD mortality over 36 years of follow-up was analysed by Cox regression. Results: At age 50, we found a significant inverse association of education with cholesterol level, LDL/HDL ratio and ApoB/ApoA1 ratio. Cholesterol was also associated with occupational class, statistically significant after adjustment for all covariates. At age 70, no significant associations were found between either measurement of SEP and any of the biomarkers studied. Highest educated men had decreased risk for CVD mortality during follow-up. Conclusions: Associations of SEP with cholesterol levels and LDL/HDL ratio that exist at age 50 are no longer apparent in the same group of men at age 70. We found no significant association between SEP and adiponectin levels at age 70.

Abstract:
Since the late Sandro Stucchi organised the pioneering Urbino conference in 1981 (Stucchi and Luni 1987), the relations of the ancient Eastern Libyans with their northeastern African neighbors, whether Egyptian or Greek, have been the object of much discussion in print (Barker 1989, 31–43; Knapp 1981, 249–279; Leahy 1985, 51–65; O'Connor 1983, 271–278 and 1987, 35–37) as well as the focus of another international conference, this time organised by Anthony Leahy for the Society of Libyan Studies joined with the University of London's School of African Studies Centre of Near and Middle Eastern Studies (Leahy et al. 1990). The 1986 joint SOAS/Society for Libyan Studies conference concentrated on Libyan-Egyptian relations prior to the middle of the 8th century BC, which normally stand outside the immediate purview of classical archaeologists, even though the Urbino conference and the first Cambridge Colloquium organised by Joyce Reynolds in 1984 both included some discussion of the pre-Greek Libyans (Baldassarre 1987,17–24; Beltrami 1985,135–143; Tinè 1987,15–16). While this acceleration of interest would no doubt gratify Oric Bates (dead since 1918), it would also perhaps pique his curiosity even more to read that after so many years the third and second millenia BC Libyans still remain archaeologically largely undocumented (Knapp 1981, 258, 263–264; Leahy 1985, 52; O'Connor 1983, 271 and 1990, 45), especially since he himself had cause to believe that he had excavated their remains in the vicinity of Marsa Matruh (Bates 1915a, 201–207, 1915b, 158-165 and 1927, 137–140; Petrie 1915, 165–166 and 1920, 36).

Abstract:
Records of Depressariidae species collected in the Altai Republic (Russia) in 2014–2019 are presented. Agonopterix kyzyltashensis sp. nov., A. ustjuzhanini sp. nov., and Depressaria paraleucocephala sp. nov. are described as new for science. Depressaria leucocephala Snellen, 1884 is deleted from the list of Altaic Depressariidae due its previous confusion with D. paraleucocephala sp. nov. Agonopterix rimulella (Caradja, 1920) sp. restit. is removed from synonymy with Agonopterix liturosa (Haworth, 1811). Exaeretia fuscogriseella Hannemann, 1990 syn. nov. is synonymised with E. indubitatella (Hannemann, 1971). Agonopterix feruliphila Millière, 1866 syn. nov. is transferred from synonymy with Agonopterix thapsiella (Zeller, 1847) to synonymy with Agonopterix adspersella (Kollar, 1832). Provisional list of related taxa of the Agonopterix adspersella group is given. Within Russian fauna, Depressaria altaica Zeller, 1854 was presented only from the Altai Republic, namely because the type specimens were recorded in the Altai. However, type locality is the Kazakh Altai, and D. altaica should be removed from checklist of the Altai Republic. At the same time, we present the first reliable records of D. altaica from southern Ural as a new species for Russia. The first reliable record of Agonopterix putridella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) for Russia is presented. Exaeretia allisella Stainton, 1849, Agonopterix anticella (Erschoff, 1877), Agonopterix bipunctosa (Curtis, 1850), Agonopterix rimulella, Depressaria sibirella Lvovsky, 1981, D. falkovitshi Lvovsky, 1990, D. libanotidella Schläger, 1848, and D. fuscovirgatella Hannemann, 1967 are new for the Altai Republic. In addition, Exaeretia mongolicella (Christoph, 1882) was found as new for the Tuva Republic. In total, 36 species of the studied family are known from the Altai Republic to date. Figures of all species new for the Altai Republic and the Tuva Republic are presented. Newly described species are figured in detail including their genitalia.

Abstract:
Background: There is much room for improvement and optimization of meniscal allograft survivorship. Purpose: To understand prognostic factors for survivorship using evidence-based selection criteria in order to identify patients who would best benefit from meniscal allograft transplant (MAT). Study Design: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: We conducted this systematic review to analyze prognostic factors for survivorship of MAT. The Cochrane Central Register, PubMed publisher, Embase.com , and Web of Science databases were searched through August 8, 2019. Included studies entailed patients of any age who received MAT with a reported association between prognostic factors and survivorship of the allograft. Two reviewers independently screened all titles and abstracts for eligibility, extracted the data, assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and performed a best-evidence synthesis. Results: The review included 18 studies with a total of 1920 patients. The mean follow-up time was 6.0 years (range, 2.1-11.2 years). A total of 20 prognostic factors were identified and shown to be associated with survivorship of MAT. Strong evidence was found that severe cartilage damage was associated with poor survivorship. Strong evidence was also found showing that sex, knee compartment, surgical side, concomitant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and concomitant osteotomy for malalignment had no effect on survivorship. Moderate evidence was found that body mass index (<36), tobacco use, and arthroscopic versus open procedure had no influence on survivorship. Conflicting evidence was found that older age and kissing cartilage lesions (lesions on both the femur and tibia vs on a single side) decreased survivorship. Conclusion: Severe cartilage damage decreases the survivorship of MAT. Concomitant ACL reconstruction and osteotomy showed no relationship to survivorship. Many determinants showed conflicting and limited evidence. Older age may be of interest and should be further studied.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives Majority of Americans practice a meat-based dietary lifestyle. We hypothesized that switching between chicken and pork meats within a nutritionally balanced diet would minimally impact gut microbiota composition, biogenic amine levels, and cardiometabolic health markers in healthy, non-diabetic adults. Methods 36 eligible men and women 50 years or older were randomized into chicken and pork meat groups consuming an isocaloric (1920 kcal/day) diet. The 10 day diet arms were separated by minimum of two weeks washout period. Following the current dietary guidelines for Americans, daily meals consisting of 156 g minimally-processed meat were provided to participants. Stool, urine and blood samples were collected before and after each diet phase followed by 16S targeted metagenomics and hydrophilic interaction chromatography analyses of metabolites. Proposed outcome measures were selected based on their ability to quickly respond to dietary changes and were assessed after overnight fasting. Linear mixed effect and regression models as well as other relevant approach were applied in R studio for data analyses. Results No differential outcome was observed between the chicken and pork diet groups for body weight and body composition features, lipid panel markers, blood pressures, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, and kidney function measures (all, P &gt; 0.05). Alpha diversity of the gut microbiome was not differential. A small number of OTU level differences in beta diversity measures were present (padj &lt; 0.05). Plasma trimethyl amine-N-oxide, trimethylamine, carnitine, and choline levels were similar between the groups. Ongoing side-by-side examination of the impact of the two meats on an extended array of over hundred biogenic amine species may reveal novel changes. Several within group effects of the intervention were observed that were non-differential between the groups. Conclusions White meat is generally perceived as healthier than red meat. Our comprehensive data suggest minimal differential metabolic impact on the host and the gut microbiota when switched between chicken (white meat) and pork (red meat). Additional assessments are needed to reflect on the long-term metabolic outcome of routine red meat intake in healthy non-vegetarian individuals. Abstract:
Abstract Background: Clofarabine is a second-generation purine analogue FDA-approved as an intravenous formulation for relapsed/refractory pediatric ALL. Purine analogues demonstrate significant clinical activity in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). Clofarabine may offer pharmacologic advantages over other nucleoside analogues including being a more efficient substrate for deoxycytidine kinase, more completely inhibiting ribonucleotide reductase and DNA polymerase α, and demonstrating improved activity in cells that are non-dividing or have a low proliferation rate. This phase 1-2 trial studied an oral formulation of clofarabine in relapsed or refractory NHL. Methods: Patients were eligible if they had relapsed or refractory NHL of any histologic subtype. All pts were required to have adequate organ function and performance status ≤2 as well as absence of CNS involvement. Patients were treated at 4 dose levels (1mg, 2mg, 4mg and ultimately 3mg) with oral clofarabine administered once daily on days 1-21 of a 28 day cycle for up to 6 cycles. Three to 6 pts were treated at each dose level in a traditional 3+3 design followed by a 10 patient dose expansion at the recommended phase 2 dose (RP2D). The phase 1 portion of this study has been published (Leuk Lymph 2013; 45:1915-1920). Phase 2 was designed to enroll 24 additional subjects. The primary endpoint in phase 2 was overall response rate (ORR). Secondary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and safety. A total of 50 patients were accrued on the phase 1-2 trial; 31 subjects were treated in phase 1 and 19 in phase 2. Phase 2 accrual was stopped prematurely due to discontinuation of the drug formulation used in the study. All patients treated at the RP2D (n=36) are included in the phase 2 efficacy analysis since there were no differences in treatment or follow-up for these patients. Results: The median age for all patients was 69 years (range 45-92). Eighty-two percent had advanced stage at study entry. The median number of prior regimens was 2 (range 1-7) and 4 patients had prior auto stem cell transplant. Histologies included follicular lymphoma (FL, 13 pts), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL, 8 pts), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, 6 pts), marginal zone lymphoma (MZL, 11 pts), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL, 9 pts), T-cell lymphoma (TCL, 2 pts) and lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL 1 pt). The 3mg dose was declared the RP2D, as previously reported. The most common toxicities were anemia (78%), leukopenia (66%), neutropenia (64%), thrombocytopenia (62%) and fatigue (60%). Twenty-nine patients (58%) experienced at least one grade 3-4 toxicity. The most common grade 3-4 toxicities were leukopenia and neutropenia (48%), thrombocytopenia (30%), anemia (14%) and fatigue (6%). There were 2 deaths on study, both considered unrelated to study drug (cardiac arrest, progressive disease). The median number of cycles administered was 4, and 18 patients (36%) completed all 6 cycles of therapy. The most common reasons for discontinuing therapy were progressive disease (34%) and toxicity (16%). Of 50 patients on study, the ORR was 28% (95% CI: 16 - 42%) with complete response rate (CRR) of 10% (95% CI: 3 - 22%). An additional 36% had stable disease (SD). By histology, responses were seen in 5/11 MZL, 4/9 MCL, 3/8 SLL, 3/13 FL, and 1/1 LPL. No responses were observed in DLBCL or TCL, although an angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma patient had SD with a 42% reduction in tumor volume, and a mycosis fungoides patient had significant reduction in cutaneous disease burden. Among 36 patients treated at the RP2D and included in the phase 2 analysis, the ORR was 28% (95% CI: 14 - 45%) with CRR of 8% (95% CI: 2 - 22%), and 44% of patients with SD. A higher proportion of patients treated at a non-RP2D experienced progressive disease on study (43% vs. 28% in the RP2D cohort). The median PFS was 5.5 months, and the one- and two- year PFS were 32% (95% CI: 20%, 45%) and 16% (95% CI: 7.5%, 27%), respectively. The median duration of follow-up was 3.8 years, with 26 patients alive and 22 deceased at last follow-up; two patients were lost to follow-up. The median OS was not reached, and the 3 year OS was 58% (95% CI: 43%, 71%). Conclusion: Oral clofarabine is generally well tolerated and produces disease control in a substantial proportion of patients with relapsed/refractory NHL, particularly in indolent histologies and MCL. Disclosures Abramson: Sanofi: Consultancy. Off Label Use: Clofarabine is not FDA-approved for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Brown:Sanofi: Consultancy.

Abstract:
9525 Background: Anti-PD1 are now the backbone of immunotherapy (IT) of metastatic melanoma (MM). Although they are overall well- tolerated, a number of severe immune-related adverse events (IRAE) have been described, among which type 1 diabetes. We observed 3 cases of fulminant diabetes (FD) in our center, and also had the impression that diabetics patients became more difficult to manage when receiving anti-PD1. Methods: Retrospective analysis of blood glucose samples collected before, during and after anti-PD1 treatment (trt ) in all mm patients (pts) receiving anti-PD1 in our department over a 36-month period. Study of FD cases observed. Results: A total of 163 pts were treated with 1920 cures of anti-PD1 including 27 treated within clinical trials. Anti-PD1 was the 1st line of IT in 70% of cases. As a whole, 1470 glycaemia were available. There was no significant difference between the median pre and post-trt glycaemia (5.37 +/-1.6 vs 5.6 +/-1.3 mmol/L (p = 0.033)). In the 28 pts with a type I (n = 0) or II (n = 28) diabetes prior to trt, there was very slight drift toward an increase of glycaemia along with the successive trt infusions (+0.05mmol/L/Cure, p = 0.004 with linear regression tendency test) .Three pts (1.84%) developed a FD revealed by a severe episode of ketosis with acute polyuria polydipsia, hyperglycaemia until 50mmol/L and weight loss. Two additional cases of FD were observed in pts treated within clinical trial comparing anti-PD1 with anti-CTLA4 in adjuvant and metastatic situation (imputability of anti-PD1 likely but uncertain until unblinding). None of these pts had any glucose increase in weeks prior to FD diagnosis. Four out of 5 FD cases had an HLA group at risk for type 1 diabetes development (HLA DRB3/4), a rare group in general population (1%). Conclusions: We could not document any systematic tendency to glycemic disorder in mm pts treated by anti-PD1. In diabetic pts prior to trt, a slight drift toward increase of glycaemia may be explained by other interfering factors (diet, metastatic disease itself, corticosteroids, anxiety etc). FD is not exceptional (2% of patients in our series) and does not seem to be announced by any minor preliminary glycemic disorder. Despite apparently stochastic onset, FD may be associated with HLA DRB3/4 subgroup.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Adult refugees with limited education are a distinctive learner group with substantial and distinctive educational, social, and psychological needs. Working with these learners is a highly specialized activity, requiring high levels of educational skill and commitment. With a paucity of original research available about this group of learners, this study provides a systematic documentation of their distinctive needs as well as effective educational strategies for use with these learners. The study involved interviews with 36 adult refugees, two program coordinators, five course teachers, and six bilingual tutors from a community-based program in New Zealand. The challenge of working with these learners arises due not only to their experiences as refugees, but also as learners with minimal or no edu- cational experience. Their progress depends on a skilful development of “learning to learn,” acquiring basic lit- eracy skills, personal confidence and transfer of these skills to everyday life outside the classroom.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to analyze the financial situation of rural «Prosvit» on the territory of the Right Bank of Ukraine in 1920–1922. On the basis of mainly archival materials, the authors find out the problems and achievements of educators in financial activities, the influence of the Soviet regime on it, its consequences. The research methodology is based on a combination of general scientific methods (comparison, generalization, analysis) with interdisciplinary (structural-system method). The main methods during the preparation of the publication were historical-comparative, synchronous, statistical. The application of these methods helped to clarify the whole set of aspects related to the scientific problem. The scientific novelty of the work is that using the methods of analysis of historical documents, the authors analyze the impact of the financial situation of educational societies on their cultural and educational work in the first years of the Soviet regime. For the first time in Ukrainian historiography the peculiarities of the financial activity of rural «Prosvit», its role in the formation and development of societies are clarified. Conclusions. The financial activity of the rural «Prosvits» of the Right Bank of Ukraine in 1920–1922 is an important component of their functioning. It determined the development of societies as well as the cultural and educational level of the peasants. «Prosvit's» financial activities were significantly influenced by local conditions and state aid. The educators organized various events to increase their budget and spend money only when needed. The financial activities of the rural «Prosvit» were under the total control of the Soviet regime. When the regime's attempts to turn educational institutions into «pocket» organizations became apparent, they were transferred to local funding and liquidated.

Abstract:
Abstract Vitamin D deficiency is epidemic in the United States and is associated with decreased calcium absorption and metabolism, leading to bone loss, muscle weakness, and impaired pancreatic function. Many thalassemia major patients, as a result of decreases sunlight exposure and increased metabolic demand, are vitamin D deficient. We hypothesized that vitamin D deficiency might be associated with cardiac siderosis and impaired cardiac function through its modulation of calcium signaling in these patients. Methods: Permission for review of medical records was obtained from the Committee on Clinical Investigation at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. We compared vitamin D25-0H and D1-25 levels in our thalassemia major patients with cardiac R2* (1/T2*) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from the patient’s most recent cardiac MRI. Time difference between the exams was 2.8 ± 3.3 months with a range of 0.2 to 9.4 months. Other parameters recorded included age, gender, ferritin, liver iron (by MRI) and transferrin saturation. Univariate and multivariate regression was performed using JMP 5.1 (SAS, Cary, NC). Results: Twenty four patients had records suitable for review. There were 11 women and 13 men with a mean age of 14.7 ± 7.6 years [1.4 – 25.8]. Population was moderately iron overloaded with ferritin values of 2089 ± 1920 ng/ml [246 – 8230], liver iron 13.7 ± 11.4 mg/g dry wt [2–39.5], cardiac R2* 65 ± 61 Hz [19.8 – 229], and transferrin saturation 84 ± 18% [36%–106%]. Vitamin D25-OH levels were markedly depressed, 17.1 ± 8.5 pg/ml [1–33], with 13/24 values below the lower limit of 20 ng/ml. Surprisingly, vitamin D1-25OH levels were normal or elevated in all patients, 59.9 ± 19.5 pg/ml [32–103] with four patients exceeding the upper limit of normal of 71 pg/ml. There was no correlation between D25-0H and D1-25OH levels. D25-OH levels (but not D1-25OH levels) fell sharply with age (r2 = 0.48) and were negatively associated with liver iron (r2 = 0.20). Figures 1 and 2 demonstrated cardiac R2* and LVEF as functions of D25-OH levels. Cardiac R2* was log-linearly correlated with D25-OH level (r2 = 0.44, p=0.0001; levels below 13 ng/ml were associated with severe cardiac iron loading. Multivariate analysis of D25-OH, D1-25, HIC, ferritin, age, and transferrin saturation demonstrated that D25-0H and ferritin are the sole predictors of abnormal cardiac R2*, accounting for 38% and 5% of the variability respectively. LVEF was also negatively related to D25-OH levels (r2 = 0.35, p = 0.002). In multivariate analysis, vitamin D250H and vitamin D1-25OH levels accounted for 50% of the LVEF variability, independent of cardiac R2*. Conclusion Vitamin D deficiency is common in thalassemia major patients and strongly associated with cardiac iron uptake and ventricular dysfunction. Figure Figure Figure Figure

Abstract:
The Seaside Clinic in Gdynia as an example of hospital private initiative in the interwar period. Case study The article introduces the short history of a private clinic operating in Gdynia of the interwar amid the broader grounds of the health care system of the time. Starting with the definition of a clinic – a facility limited in its care range to a selected group of diseases, the text describes the circumstances of establishing such a mini hospital in the growing town of Gdynia. This Baltic shore village had become a place of significant investment since 1920 – the construction of a port serving the reborn country. In a short period of time subsequent harbours were built: naval, fishing and trade with a thriving and modern city alongside them. The scale of transformations as well as the social processes involved, including a massive flow of population meant that the administration at various levels did not keep up with the construction of necessary infrastructure. Shortages in terms of health care and treatment, housing development or education were covered by private initiatives. There was prosperity for such undertakings in Gdynia. Two visiting doctors had also decided to take advantage of it, namely Miron Mikiciński and Stanisław Bobkowski, who having observed the necessities of the city established there in 1929 a clinic for surgical, gynaecological and midwifery cases. It was in a rented villa close to the very centre of the town where a facility with 36 beds was established, whose financial maintenance was supported by local authorities. The undertaken public and private venture was indispensable for securing immediate surgical cases, while at the same time giving the inhabitants the possibility of having their children delivered in proper conditions, among others. The clinic would quickly take over the „market” in the scope of female health and pregnancy pathology. Still, they treated patients insured in the public Health Maintenance organisation (Kasa Chorych), which constituted a source of additional income. It would trigger controversies, since the chief medical doctor of the insurance institution was at the same time an investor of the clinic. Thus, despite its broad range of activities, operations of the facility would raise doubts or even were critically judged. In nearly three years after its opening, facing an absence of agreement while striking a new deal with local authorities, the owners closed down the clinic. Its equipment was then bought by the city authorities and ended up in two hospitals in Gdynia, the doctors – owners and employees, with one exception, remained in Gdynia, successfully continuing their practice. After Zbigniew Tustanowski, the one doctor who had left the city, an extraordinary legacy remained, namely an album with photographs of the personnel, patients, the interiors and the inventory of the facility. From it, we learn of the everyday life of the hospital and of the backstage of functioning of that interesting place in the medical history of Gdynia.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to analyze the state policy towards the national minorities of Ukraine of the Ukrainian Soviet state formations of the period of formation of the Soviet goverment in Ukraine. The author explores the peculiarities of the formation and change of the national policy of the Bolsheviks on the eve of the October coup of 1917 and during the functioning of the Ukrainian People’s Republic of Soviets (UPR Soviets) and the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic (USSR). The research methodology is based on a combination of general scientific and special-historical methods of scientific research. Using the method of content analysis, the main Bolshevik legal acts of the period of establishment of the Bolshevik regime are analyzed, which reflect the basic principles and provisions of the national policy of the first Ukrainian Soviet state formations on the territory of Ukraine. The scientific novelty of the work is that the author focused on the evolution and functioning of the national policy of the Bolsheviks in Ukraine depending on internal and external factors that were associated with the establishment of the Bolshevik regime of 1917 – 1920’s. Conclusions. We believe that the policy of the Ukrainian Soviet state formations during the period of establishment of the Bolshevik regime towards the national minorities of Ukraine was an indispensable component of the national policy of the Bolsheviks of the RSFSR. The flirtation with the national liberation movements of the former peoples of the Russian Empire through the «right to self-determination» and the «right to national and cultural life» weakened with the stages of Bolshevism in Ukraine, and disappeared altogether with the establishment of the Bolshevik regime. Belief in the rapid and «triumphant» future victory of communism at the initial stage of Soviet rule in Ukraine deprived the Ukrainian Bolsheviks of the opportunity to determine the basic principles and provisions of national and cultural policy toward Ukraine’s ethnic minorities. Preserving the «independent» status of Soviet Ukraine during the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian SSR was nothing more than a tactical step in the process of «convergence» of national Soviet formations in the natural process of victory of communism.
