Abstract:
Tommy (as he was invariably called by his numerous friends) Gold was a most unusual scientist in several respects. One of these is that at school and even as an undergraduate it never crossed his mind that he might become a professional scientist. Only a remarkable chain of events brought this about. He came from a very well–to–do family in Vienna. His father (who was Jewish, while his mother was not) was a hard–working senior director in a major industrial firm. Tommy admired him greatly. It seemed natural to Tommy that he would follow his father in business.

Abstract:
Raymond Lemieux was one of the outstanding chemists of the second half of the twentieth century. During the four decades from 1950 onwards he dominated the field of carbohydrate chemistry. His rare and special degree of insight into chemical problems resulted in numerous seminal discoveries and observations that influenced organic chemistry extensively, and provided the area of carbohydrate chemistry—and its associated subjects—with extremely significant conceptual and experimental tools. His work was a determining factor in converting this field from an academic specialization into one of great practical importance in chemistry, biology and medicine. His influential role was recognized when, with 21 world-renowned chemists, he was invited by the American Chemical Society to write his autobiography. The highly engaging series of books, Profiles, pathways and dreams , documents the development of modern organic chemistry through the research careers of chemists who made fundamental contributions to organic chemistry over many decades of research. Lemieux's contribution, Explorations with sugars. How sweet it was , is an excellent account of his research from 1946 to 1990 (50)*.

Abstract:
Frank Bonsall played a significant role in the mathematical life of the United Kingdom in the decades following the Second World War. He had a particular impact in Scotland and the north of England, especially in research and graduate education. His research interests focused primarily on functional analysis, the area of mathematics that brings together various strands of analysis under a single abstract framework, and on the related theory of linear operators on Banach spaces. He influenced a generation of young mathematicians with the elegance of his written and oral expositions, both of his own research and that of others. The quality of his caring and thorough research supervision was reflected in his many PhD students who would continue in research and go on to successful academic careers in their own right, both in the United Kingdom and beyond.

Abstract:
On December 1, 1920, the patient Efrem Ignatiev, 22 years old, was admitted to the Obstetric and Gynecological Clinic of Kazan University, who was sent to the Krasnokokshai military commissar to establish his gender. In the documents sent with the patient, there was an act of the medical commission on military fees, from which it was clear that on November 22, 1920, a citizen of the Vyatka province, Krasnokokshaisky district, the village of Miklinoy, Efrem Ignatiev, who was born in 1899, was subjected to examination of the state of health when conscripted for military service, and during the examination it turned out, it was said in the act of the commission, that gr. Ignatiev has predominantly female organs and underdeveloped male organs. On this basis, the commission decided to send the aforementioned Ignatiev to the Kazan Obstetric and Gynecological Clinic, as a hermaphrodite, to establish gender.

"Local Features of Communication Between the Soviet Government and the Cossack Population of the Kuban (1920–22): The Chronicle of Staronizhesteblievskaya Stanitsa." Abstract:
The article is devoted to consideration of local features of communication between the Soviet government and the Cossack population of the Kuban in 1920–22 on the example of the chronicle of life of Staronizhesteblievskaya stanitsa. Using traditional methods of system analysis, retrospective and comparative approaches to historical research, the authors have set a task of identifying mechanisms for strengthening Soviet power and organizing its interaction with the population in the Kuban villages. The Cossack population was distinguished by its conservative worldview and for most part participated in the Civil War on the side of the White movement. Identification of features of the relationship between the Soviet authorities and the Cossack population of the Kuban in the early Soviet period (1920–22) is relevant for national historical science, as it shows that repressive vector in the system of communication of victorious political forces with individual ethno-social groups and society as a whole was possible, but not mandatory. The novelty of the research lies in consideration of economic, social, and political processes occurring at the grassroots level of the South of Russia rural society, in a Cossack village. Relying on methodological provisions of microhistoric approach, according to which the objects of scientific analysis are historical events and phenomena at the local level, the authors have analyzed socially significant phenomena in the rural society of Staronizhestebliyevskaya stanitsa, revealing features of the Cossack population integration into the Soviet society. The article introduces into scientific use documents of the village revkom and higher Soviet authorities, which highlight social confrontation within the rural society. They show how the Soviet government searched for and implemented mechanisms of combating the “green” insurgency and sabotage of the prodrazverstka, using preventive arrest, confiscation of property, taking and executing hostages. Having reconstructed the chronicle of life of Staronizhesteblievskaya stanitsa in 1920–22, the authors conclude that the Soviet government set a course for confrontation with the wealthy and middle-class Cossacks in its system of communication with the Cossack population of the Kuban in the early 1920s, designing and testing a repressive model of interaction with those disagreeing with political and economic transformations. The study has been carried out on the basis of materials from the State Archive of the Krasnodar Krai. Its results can be used for comprehensive characterization of the Soviet authorities’ activities in the era of their formation and strengthening (1920–22) and of the Kuban Cossacks adaptation to the new model of state and society.

Abstract:
Two buildings constructed in early twentieth-century Shanghai, one by a U.S. bank, the other by a shipping company, and both designed by a New York architect reveal the complex aesthetic and cultural issues that architecture must address in a global setting. These issues go beyond the buildings' facades to their construction, use, layout, leasing, and imagery. These two examples suggest that more comprehensive analyses of early twentieth-century commercial buildings in many global settings should lead to a clearer understanding of their significance.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article attempts to consider the actions of the cavalry at the final stage of the Civil War in the South of Russia. The relevance of the work is explained not only by the 100th anniversary of the end of the Civil War (1920/22 – 2020/22), but also by the need to introduce into scientific circulation new, not yet published memoirs of participants in this conflict. The main source for the study was the memoirs of one of the ordinary participants in the events in the Crimea in 1920 – Captain P. M. Trofimov, head of the machine-gun team of the Drozdovsky Rifle regiment. Memories "From the history of the Drozdovites. The military actions of the Drozdov Rifle Division during the Crimean period of the Civil War (March – October 1920)" are stored in the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF) and have not been published until now. In them, the author offers his vision of the action of the cavalry of both the Russian Army of P. N. Wrangel and the cavalry of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army (Red Army). Of interest is the fact that the author is an infantry officer, which is why P. M. Trofimov's view of his own and enemy cavalry turns out to be "from the outside". This position helps to more objectively investigate the role and mode of action of cavalry in the Civil War. The main results of the study show that when assessing the actions of cavalry at the final stage of the Civil War, an important place was given to the combination of cavalry with other types and types of troops: infantry, aviation, armored cars. It is concluded that P. M. Trofimov's memoirs have a good informational potential for studying the military aspect of the Civil War in Southern Russia in general and for studying the actions of the red and white cavalry in particular. The fields of application of this research may lie in the study of the military history of the Civil War, and in source studies on the analysis of not yet published memoirs about the Civil War.

Vynnychenko, 1990 – Vynnychenko V. Vidrodzhennia natsii [Rebirth of the nation]. Abstract:
The article deals with the organization of grain collection in Siberia in the summer and autumn of 1920., There is a stable stereotype in historical literature that the 110 million poods of surplus-appropriation system was introduced by a decree of the Council of people’s Commissars on July 22, 1920. Based on the analysis of historical sources of various departmental origin and materials of the periodical press, the author shows that in reality the amount of 110 million poods was considered as indicative and the maximum possible. The coincidence of a number of factors led to the fact that this amount became a directive to the Siberian food authorities. The scientific novelty of the article consists in revealing the role and place of Sibprodkom in establishing this amount of the surplus-appropriation system, as well as showing discussions about the possibility of collecting the full amount of surplus-appropriation system among food workers in Siberia.

The Paris Peace Conference introduced a new international juridical concept as a decisive factor in their decisions: the right of all nations to selfdetermination. The Treaty of Trianon from June 4th 1920 was not a bilateral one (Hungary-Romania) as it was signed by Hungary along 22 other states from all the continents. The Treaty does not contain the word Transylvania, and the border between Hungary and Romania was established based on the will of the majority. The Treaty came into effect on July 26th 1921 after its ratification by Romania and Hungary along the other signatory states.

Abstract:
The fate of Ukraine is intertwined with the fate of Poland to a greater extent than that of other nations. There are many alliances and friendships in Ukrainian-Polish history. On April 22, 1920, the Ukrainian-Polish union was concluded. Thus, the story of the Ukrainian regular armed forces ended. Ukrainian political emigrants in Poland in the 1920s and 1930s tried to take a decent place in the social and economic life of their place of residence. The authors deal with the issue of a Ukrainian army emigration to be found active in the territory of Poland in the interwar period (from 1920 to the outbreak of World War II). He shows the context and circumstances of its appearance in the Republic of Poland, as a result of the Ukrainian People’s Republic army activity and Symen Peltura’s cooperation with Józef Piłsudski. The authors characterize the way the army emigration functioned within the reality of the Polish nation covering various aspects, a developed cultural and educational structure among others. Based on a comprehensive analysis of modern Ukrainian historiography of the problem, the authors note the necessity of further historiographical research.

The author analyzes the order in which individual people’s courts in different uyezds of the governorate were established. The paper outlines the staffing issues that Altai Governorate was faced with when it came to the people’s judges following the Bolsheviks’ rise to power as well as before and after the judicial reform of 1922.

Abstract:
The caenogastropod family Pachychilidae Troschel, 1858 is a monophyletic group of freshwater snails that is distributedin the tropical regions of the world, where they exhibit high levels of endemism at the species and generic levels. Thereare many uncertainties regarding generic affiliation and species names in the Mesoamerican Pachychilidae owing to theirrelatively variable shells, the lack of distinctive anatomical features and the intricate taxonomic histories. In an attempt toconsolidate the knowledge of this taxon in the Neotropics, we provide here a catalogue of all available names of theMesoamerican pachychilid fauna, laying the foundation for future taxonomic revisions. Primary types were located for 56species-group taxa, and lectotypes for 22 nomina were designated. 102 nominal taxa of Mesoamerican pachychilids wereoriginally described. We consider that six of these taxa belong to other cerithioidean families. Two nomina are consideredto be unnecessary replacement names (Melania renovata Brot, 1862; Pachychilus tristrami Crosse & Fischer, 1892). Twotaxa are South American species that were incorrectly associated with Mesoamerican taxa (Pachychilus laevissimus sensuReeve, 1860; Melania laevissima var. decollata Brot, 1875). The exact type locality of Pachycheilus dalli Pilsbry, 1896and Melania mexicana were identified, and we accept Pachychilus hinkleyi (Marshall, 1920) as replacement name of the invalid Sphaeromelania hinkleyi Marshall, 1920.

The centenary of the establishment of the first Department of History of the Polish Culture at the Jagiellonian University is a good opportunity to recall the scientific achievements in this discipline. In Krakow, in the second half of the nineteenth century, research on history of education, literature and culture was conducted at the Academy of Arts and Sciences and at the Jagiellonian University. However, it was not until Stanisław Kot’s scientific activity and his appointment as an associate professor that the chair in History of the Polish Culture at the Jagiellonian University was created in 1920. His seminar on the history of culture had enjoyed significant popularity and was attended by many students. In the years 1925–1939 he promoted 22 doctors and four of his students obtained a habilitation. However, due to the political involvement of Kot, the Sanation authorities decided to abolish his chair by introducing a new law on academic schools in 1933.

Poddali analizie 70 haseł z kwalifikatorem w Marynarce (litery K–L) w XIX-wiecznym słowniku rosyjsko-polskim. Abstract:
AbstractThis article deals with the process of decision-making in the sphere of taxation in Argentina between 1920 and 1945, focusing on the possible influence of the economic elites in that process. Given the central role of decisions over taxation in any fiscal policy and the momentous transformations that occurred in the Argentine system during this period, analysis of this subject can provide a better understanding of the political role that economic elites in Argentina played between the first presidency of Hipólito Yrigoyen (1916–22) and the ascent of Juan Domingo Perón to the presidency in 1946. Drawing on three key episodes in Argentina policy-making – the attempt to introduce an income tax in 1923, the response to the Depression in 1931–32, and the crisis of 1942–43, this article suggests that parliamentary institutions had stronger resilience in Argentina than is usually believed, and corporatist arrangements became rooted in Argentina only with difficulties.

Abstract:
In his recently published monograph on the genus Pinguicula in the Greater Antilles, Casper (2019: 100) writes with respect to the "dubious taxon" P. benedicta Barnhart: "Holotype: Cuba, Oriente, trail [from] Camp La Barga to Camp San Benito 43, 23 [" 22-26 "] Feb 1910, Shafer 4025 (NY, destroyed in 1943 while on loan to B)". There is apparently no original material in the New York herbarium (NY), and the assumption that it was destroyed in Berlin (B) cannot plausibly be refuted. It should, however, be noted that Barnhart (1920: 110) did not specify the herbarium in his original type reference, and as already noted by Shimai (2017: 274) there is a well-preserved specimen of "Shafer 4025" in the herbarium of the Arnold Arboretum (A, barcode 93357).
