Abstract:
The Great War is not a historical episode that easily lends itself to studying the subtleties of religious belief systems. Believers on opposite sides claimed that they were engaged in a just war of defense against aggression. They argued that God was on their side, and they prayed for victory of their nation—even if that meant the destruction of their fellow believers who were now considered the enemy. Despite Catholic claims to internationalism and universalism, the overwhelming majority of Catholic bishops and prominent clerics in the public sphere devoted themselves to national causes. Cle

Abstract The ecumenical movement started at the time of the First World War and was molded by the nationalism that ignited this war. In 1914-1918 it became clear that the nations had become a hindrance for the churches. At first, internationalism seemed the answer to this problem, but in the 1920s and 1930s it turned out that internationalism still was too abstract, and nationalism was still too dominant. In the early 1920s W.A. Visser ’t Hooft was active in the international Christian student movement, where he learned the relevance of Christianity as an alternative for nationalism, and in th

Por un lado, a través de una labor de recopilación documental que incluye la incorporación por primera vez de una parte importante de las fuentes oficiales de la Legión en Aubagne, la tesis pretende avanzar de manera científica en aspectos como la cuantificación de

Abstract:
This chapter deals primarily with the experience of German Jewish conservatives and nationalists in the military during the First World War. It looks at Jewish soldiers as active participants in the German military, rather than as objects of the military’s actions. It focuses on frontline soldiers and the particular and peculiar position of military rabbis on the German Eastern Front. It proposes that the war, not least in the East, held great promise for German Jews. The chapter’s main argument is that, particularly in the East, Jewish Soldiers viewed themselves as active participants and contributors to the war until the very end. It thus adds to the growing focus on the way German Jews shaped the German war effort, notwithstanding the increasing antisemitism they experienced.

Abstract:
This chapter is a narrative of wartime recruiting in the South and West, particularly during the war’s first months. While recruiting surged, civic mobilisation of support was ambivalent. The overwhelming majority of Irish opinion was clearly pro-war, but nationalist politicians appeared more intent on consolidating the Irish National Volunteers than recruiting into the army. Conscription, marked by endemic opposition and recurring scares, remained a key issue. In 1914, the fear of being called up rivalled the power of collective sacrifice. The narrative will then address 1915’s campaigns to revive recruiting, the formation of Pals units and efforts to recruit munitions workers. It will assess the impact of the Easter Rising, the moribund state of recruiting in 1916-17 and its revival in 1918, primarily into the RAF.
