Abstract:
Patrick Mollison was a pioneer in blood transfusion, playing a major role in changing it from a risky procedure to one which is now extremely safe. The urgent need for blood during World War II provided a stimulus for the development of this important lifesaving measure. His first major contribution was to devise a mechanism whereby blood could be stored for more than just short periods. Mixing donated blood with acid–citrate–dextrose (ACD) became a standard procedure for almost 30 years and was used worldwide. He later took a special interest in haemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), which was largely due to Rhesus incompatibility between mother and baby. He was also involved with work which eventually led to HDN becoming preventable with the use of anti-D treatment of mothers. He wrote the first standard textbook on blood transfusion; almost 70 years later it is in its eleventh edition and still bears his name in the title. He spent his working life in blood transfusion and the study of the scientific aspects of this subject, developing a university department at Hammersmith Hospital and publishing almost 200 scientific papers as well as the textbook. He was very much a clinical scientist rather than a front-line clinician, although he was physician to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and was present at the birth of all four of her children.

Abstract:
The parameters of the hypocenter of the Bilimbaev earthquake that occurred on August 17, 1914, are located. We performed earthquake location based on our compilation of all available seismological bulletins of the time that included data from the ISC-GEM (International Seismological Centre–Global Earthquake Model) project, the EuroSeismos project, and the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The location was performed using a modified generalized beamforming method based on the ak135 travel time model and regional model by the Ural region. The new epicenter is removed from the epicenters, previous-ly determined from macroseismic and partly instrumental data, at a distance not exceeding 28 km. The previously calculated earthquake epicenters are in the region of the error ellipse of the new epicenter. The depth values indicated earlier also lie in the range of possible depths of the focus of the specified hypocenter. Thus, all the epicenters, including the new one, are relevant and with equal probability can be considered as the true epicenter of the earthquake

Tadeusz Bierczyński – Journal of a Legionary 1914–1915 Bierczyński (1891–1970), a graduate of law at Jagiellonian University, led the “Falcon” unit, which set off from Wieliczka on 25 August 1914 to join the Legions forming in Krakow. He served in the 2nd Infantry Regiment, participating in the winter offensive of the II Brigade and the tough battles in Carlibaba (17–21 January 1915) and Korolówka (6–7 March 1915). During the fighting, he described the events from the life of a legionary, however, only fragments of his typed journal remain, covering events from 25 August until 21 October 1914, then from 10 January until 9 March 1915 and from 11 to 31 May 1915. They contain interesting information not only about the military activities, but also about the daily life of the legionaries, the view of the organisation of military actions, news about legionaries as well as descriptions of places in which the divisions were stationed.

Abstract:
This paper reassesses American opinions and sentiments during the period of neutrality in light of the one endeavor that involved millions of Americans in the European conflict long before official U.S. belligerency: war relief. Tracing some of the “humanitarian narratives” employed in the relief campaigns for the Central Powers, the Allies, and neutral Belgium, humanitarian involvement, it will be argued, not only expressed prevalent ethnic, cultural, and political affinities, but shaped American attitudes toward the different belligerents. Contrary to contemporary claims, humanitarian pursuits were never even remotely impartial, but drew Americans onto the different sides of the war like few other endeavors. Indeed, relief work must be taken serious as a force of “cultural mobilization” (Horne), which affected American “visions of the war and its outcome.” By involving Americans actively on the different sides of the European war, it helped forge discrete moral and emotional alliances across the Atlantic. In trying to understand the complicated and acrimonious process by which Americans moved from peace to war, their relief work thus deserves attention.

VARCOE, IAN. "Comment: practical proposals by scientists for reforming the machinery of scientific advice, 1914–17." British Journal for the History of Science 33, no. 1 (March 2000): 109–14. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0007087499003891.

Abstract:
In selecting among the many statements that were made in the ‘War of Words’, it is important to choose only those that contained practical proposals for administrative reform and redirection of Government policy. Only then can we assess the extent to which they were in tune with or diverged from the plans being developed within the Board of Education. These were the ones that, because of their focused nature, draftspersons in the Board of Education might conceivably have felt constrained to take into account, and either to incorporate in, or exclude from, their own designs. In this way it is possible to be precise about what scientists wanted in 1914–17, and to estimate their degree of realism and the likely scope of their influence. The Fellows of the Royal Society and the Chemical and Engineering societies must, Sir William Ramsay (FRS, chemist) urged in October 1914, be co-ordinated. They need, he said, to ‘work together at what for us is the supreme problem of all – how to conquer the Germans?’. The British Science Guild was to be included and the Royal Society was to ‘set the example’. Committees should be created; experts from other societies were to be added. In March 1915 Ramsay prepared a ‘Draft Scheme for a Chemical Council of State’. It was to comprise twenty-four members, one-third technical chemists, one-third scientific investigators and one-third analytical and consulting chemists. It was to collect information on all aspects of the industry; to bring universities into contact with manufacturers; and to advise Government. Members were to be paid a small retainer. Agents were to be employed to visit factories and colleges. Eight members were to retire each year. The proposed Council was ‘to resemble to some extent a Royal Commission’. It would be appointed for ten years in the first instance. It would report annually to the Crown, but would not be attached to any Government department, although it would be associated with several. Non-political, it would be appointed by and directly responsible to the Crown. The president of the Royal Society would initially nominate two technical chemists and two scientific chemists. They, chaired by him, would choose twenty others.

Abstract:

Dr Stefan Szuman as a doctor in the German army (1914–1919). Biographical contribution The author reconstructs the biography of the Polish doctor, Dr Stefan Szuman (1889–1972), later a professor at Jagiellonian University (1928–1961) during his period in the German army (1914–1919). S. Szuman, who acquired the state right to perform the profession of doctor in the German Reich on 7 September 1914, as well as the level of medical doctor on 23 December 1914 at the Faculty of Medicine in the Ludwik Maximilian University of Munich, formally served in the German army in the years 1914–1919. He served as a military doctor on the eastern front in the fight against Russia (from January 1915 until April 1916), firstly in Mazovia and Kujawy, then in Volhynia. Later he served on the western front – from April 1916 until December 1917, on the border between France and Belgium. During the night of 30 November and 1 December 1917 he was heavily wounded in the leg during the Battle of Cambrai in the Nord-Pas-de- Calais region near Raillencourt-Sainte-Olle, next to Cambrai and Bouchain. For his service in the German army, he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class medal (at the turn of 1917/1918). After his recovery in Aachen and Torun, he was transferred to serve in the military hospital in the citadel in Hannover (from May until December 1918). After 9 December 1918, he returned to Torun, where he stayed until 17 May 1919, working as a garrison doctor in the clinic of his father – Dr Leon Szuman, still formally an officer in the German army until 19 March 1919 as a citizen of Germany. On 20 May 1919, he was accepted into the Polish Army at the rank of captain in Torun, which was still inside the German partition. On 31 May 1919, S. Szuman illegally crossed the Polish-German border near Torun and succeeded in reaching Wielkopolska.

Abstract:
The article considers Six Fugues op. 17 by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov (1875) as an important milestone in the history of the Saint Petersburg conservatory contrapuntal school. The analysis of the fugues carried out by Victor M. Belyaev, an outstanding Russian researcher and a graduate of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, and published in the Moscow weekly magazine Muzyka in 1914, proves Rimsky-Korsakov’s deep understanding of the compositional patterns of the Bach fugue. Rimsky-Korsakov's original implementation of Bach's principles became one of the foundations of the composer's creative method and was carried on in the contrapuntal technique of his disciples. The author clarifies the circumstances of the publication of Belyaev's work and the subsequent discussion with Boris L. Sabaneev, as well as supplements Belyaev's analysis with some analytical observations.

The high prevalence of the disease, the high risk of disability and death in this cohort of patients requires the study of the epidemiological and clinical structure of PHPT to determine the extent of medical care. AIM: Evaluate the frequency of PHPT detection and characterize its clinical forms in Russia using an online registry. METHODS: The object of the study is the database of the State Register of Patients with PHPT 1914 patients from 71 regions of the Russian Federation. New cases of the disease, as well as dynamic indicators are recorded when patients visit outpatient clinics or medical institutions. The analysis of data made at the end of December 2017 was carried out. The following parameters were evaluated: demographic and clinical indicators; indicators of phosphorus-calcium metabolism, the main forms of PHPT and its course, the primary characteristic of PHPT in hereditary syndromes and parathyroid carcinoma. Results are presented as mean and standard deviations, or medians and quartiles; descriptive statistics of qualitative attributes absolute and relative frequencies. RESULTS: the total number of patients with PHPT in the registry on 31 of December 2017 was 1914 cases (0.001% of the population of the Russian Federation). Identification of PHPT was 1.3 cases per 100 thousand of the population in Russia, 7.6 cases in Moscow, 6.1 cases per 100 thousand in the Moscow region. The average age of patients at the time of diagnosis was 55.6 10 years. The active phase of the disease was registered in 84.6% of patients (1620/1914), most of whom had a symptomatic PHPT 67.1% (1087/1620), and 32.9% a asymptomatic disease (533/1620). Symptomatic disease with visceral complications was detected in 15.8% cases (172/1087), with bone complications in 48.4% (526/1087). The mixed form of the disease was detected in 35.8% of patients with manifest form (389/1087). Normocalcemic variant PHPT (nPHPT) was registered in 14.5% cases (234/1620). Sporadic PHPT occurs in 83% of cases (1592/1914). 326 patients (17%) had a suspicion for hereditary form of the disease: average age was 31.2 12.3 years. A genetic analysis was conducted in 61 patients (3.2%): showed the mutation in the MEN1 gene in 2.9% of cases (55/1914) and the mutation in the CDC73 gene in 0.3% of cases (6/1914) (HPT-JT syndrome). Parathyroid carcinoma was confirmed in 1.8% of all patients (35/1914). Surgical treatment was performed in 64.5% of patients (1234/1914). Remission was achieved in 94% of cases (1160/1234), in 6% of cases relapse after surgical treatment or persistence of PHPT was recorded. CONCLUSION: detection of PHPT in the Russian Federation raised in comparison to 2016, which is associated with an active start of registration of patients in the regions. At this stage, it is necessary to modify the principles of registration and control, to make a platform for gathering information and calculating the necessary volumes of medical care for PHPT patients.

Abstract:
Public concern over the so called “trust problem” in the United States between the end of the nineteenth century and 1914, the year of the passage of the Clayton and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Acts, was reflected in the considerable contemporary literature on the subject. Not surprisingly, professional economists actively participated in this debate. Their thinking directly and indirectly influenced the legislation of 1914 in a way that cannot be said of the Sherman Act of 1890 (Mayhew 1998). A survey of the most important of these professional writings shows that, among the several voices animating the discussion, John Bates Clark's was perhaps the most influential. In this connection, Joseph Dorfman argues that John Bates Clark's second edition of his Control of Trusts (1912), co-authored with his son John Maurice, “played a formative historical role in policy making, for it provided the most systematic exposition of the view on trusts, that was embodied in 1914, at President Woodrow Wilson's urging, in the Clayton Act and the FTC Acts.” “From this standpoint,” continues Dorfman quite emphatically, “The Control of Trusts caught the dominant reform interest and in turn became a contributing force in shaping the trend of the socio-economic development of the nation” (1971, p. 17). Apart from the 1912 monograph, John Bates Clark devoted considerable attention to the problems of trusts and industrial combinations during much of his career, both in his professional writings and in his frequent contributions to newspapers and popular reviews.

Abstract:
Whether in philology, lexicography, archaeology, or international reconciliation, the German theologian Gustav Adolf Deissmann was an intellectual force to be reckoned with. As New Testament Professor at Heidelberg (1897-1908) – where he produced most of his Greek linguistic works – he became the ‘Father of New Testament Philology’ and was the first one to prove the Greek Bible’s vernacular Koine, by comparing its language with that in the papyri and inscriptions. He is best known for his most frequently quoted book Light from the Ancient East. As New Testament Professor at Berlin (1908-35), he produced the internationally influential semi-political communiqués Protestant Weekly Letter (1914-17) and Evangelischer Wochenbrief (1914-21), which indirectly led to his successful rescue operation for the then rapidly vanishing ancient city of Ephesus, and also helped to establish him as a leading member of the post WW1 ecumenical and international reconciliation movement. Deissmann was the recipient of eight honorary doctorates – Marburg, Aberdeen, St Andrews, Manchester, Wooster, Oxford, Uppsala and Athens – and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Price.

Abstract:
Te Papa holds a collection of 17 textile fragments acquired in 1914 from the Egypt Exploration Fund. These fragments were excavated from the site of Antinoopolis in Egypt during the 1913–1914 season of fieldwork, carried out under the direction of John de Monins Johnson. They derive from items of dress and soft furnishings dating from the first millennium CE (the Roman Period and Early Arabic Period in Egypt). The objectives of this study were to identify the original textiles that the fragments derive from and their dates of manufacture and use, all within the context of the story of Antinoopolis. As part of the study, the textile fragments were examined according to standard modern practice. The study was carried out as an extension of recent work undertaken by institutions in the United Kingdom in particular the Whitworth Art Gallery, on the textiles recovered from Johnson’s excavation, most of which are held in collections in the United Kingdom. The Te Papa study is significant in that it adds to this body of work. In addition, the collection is a valuable resource for education and research.

Abstract:
At the 1914 Crown Council, which decided to keep Romania neutral in 1914, former Conservative prime minister Petre Carp offered his succinct and direct opinion about the direction of Romanian foreign policy in the opening days of the Great War. He admonished the Council that, if Romania wanted to remain among the ‘civilized states’ ( statele civilizate) it had to follow Germany and Austria-Hungary into war immediately. The idea of ‘civilized states’ that dominated the remainder of the Crown Council was not merely an intersubjective social construction. It was a legal term of art in fin de siècle international law that could be applied in the real world. It was only the legally-civilized states that enjoyed the full panoply of rights, privileges, and protections under international law. This is a study of how Romania’s policy-making elite, and Ion I. C. Brătianu’s government, in particular, confronted the challenges of ‘situational sovereignty’. It asserts that, during Romania’s two-year Period of Neutrality (3 August 1914–17 August 1916), Brătianu initially used bilateral conventions as both a method to establish recognition of Romania’s status (or at least a guarantee of territorial integrity) and as a litmus test to determine which (if any) foreign powers recognized Romania as a legal equal. Although he was able to achieve a short-term victory of having an equality clause inserted into the August 1916 political convention with the Entente, it is unclear if that clause could have been durable. Ultimately, Brătianu was trapped between a desire to secure Romania’s recognition through international agreement, but confronted with the reality that Romania’s lack of recognition as a legally-civilized equal meant those very conventions could be unenforceable.

The article is devoted to the policy of censorship in Lithuania after the Manifesto issued by Emperor Nicholas II on 17 October 1905 in order to find out those ideas, thoughts, and opinions that the authorities of the Russian Empire sought to exclude from the communication process. The main object of the research is the Polish periodical press (newspapers, magazines, continuous, and one-off publications) published in Vilnius in 1905-1914. With the help of a comparative perspective, we will try to answer the question of whether the censorship of the Polish periodicals was subject to the same policy as other publications, whether there were peculiarities, or whether these periodicals were addressed more strictly. The main source of the research is the materials of the minutes of the meetings of the Temporary Committee on Press Affairs in Vilnius that have not been used in previous research.

What is the relationship between political instability and economic growth? This article examines this question using insights from the new institutional economics applied to a canonical case: revolutionary Mexico. The authors argue that investment and growth during and after the revolution were less affected by political instability than one might predict based on the extant theoretical and empirical literature. They find that while investor expectations, output, and productivity were sensitive to the interdiction of factor and product markets during the years of intense revolutionary violence (1914–17), the periods of political instability before (1910–13) and afterward (1918–34) had relatively minor effects on investor confidence, investments in new plant and equipment, rates of entry and exit by firms, industrial structure, and productivity growth.

Abstract:
Hugo Verriest and August Vermeylen 1895-1914. Part 3: High point 1910-1914During the last years before the First World War the cooperation between August Vermeylen and Hugo Verriest culminated in a true high point. Much was made of Verriest’s address at the Brussels’ world exhibition on 5 July 1910 in the presence of King Albert I, but the speech also offended the liberals because of its one-sided view of West Flemish literature. In 1912 Vermeylen adjusted his well-known slogan from 1900: “in order to be anything, we need to be Flemish. We wish to be Flemish in order to become Europeans”. He positioned the Flemish movement in the growing area of tension between France and Germany. On 17 August of the following year, Vermeylen as chairman of the Association of Flemish Authors dedicated his efforts to pay an elaborate tribute to the parish priest of Ingooigem in the presence of thousands of Flemish and Dutch people. In doing so, he praised the tolerance with which Verriest treated dissidents. He appreciated that Verriest manifested “the close cohesion of art and life, which unites authors and fighters for higher culture in Flanders”. At this festive occasion all generations since the death of Albrecht Rodenbach (1880) were present, “from everywhere where the Dutch language is spoken”.The last time they cooperated before the war related to the turmoil about Minister Proper Poullets’ draft law on elementary education and the relevant language regime for Flemish school children, in particular in Brussels. At the meeting on 10 February 1914, the socialist leader Alberic Deswarte, the Catholic priest Hugo Verriest and August Vermeylen took the floor. Verriest spoke about the liberating ‘approaching spring tide’ in Flanders. All together they dedicated their efforts to the fundamental rights of all working-class children to enjoy education in their native language, to formation and a decent professional training. Vermeylen warned in strong terms about the loss of Brussels because of the strong pressure towards Frenchification. We may draw the general conclusion that the cooperation between Vermeylen and Verriest during the period of 1895-1914 made a major contribution towards the progress of the Flemish movement.

Abstract:
The extent of somatic mutation and clonal selection in the human bladder remains unknown. We sequenced 2097 bladder microbiopsies from 20 individuals using targeted (n = 1914 microbiopsies), whole-exome (n = 655), and whole-genome (n = 88) sequencing. We found widespread positive selection in 17 genes. Chromatin remodeling genes were frequently mutated, whereas mutations were absent in several major bladder cancer genes. There was extensive interindividual variation in selection, with different driver genes dominating the clonal landscape across individuals. Mutational signatures were heterogeneous across clones and individuals, which suggests differential exposure to mutagens in the urine. Evidence of APOBEC mutagenesis was found in 22% of the microbiopsies. Sequencing multiple microbiopsies from five patients with bladder cancer enabled comparisons with cancer-free individuals and across histological features. This study reveals a rich landscape of mutational processes and selection in normal urothelium with large heterogeneity across clones and individuals.

Abstract:
Acanthaspid isopods are well known from the deep sea regions of all oceans. Many species have been found also on the continental shelf around Antarctica. Phylogenetic relationships within the Acanthaspidiidae and the genetic differentiation of populations are poorly understood. In this study we analysed 16S rRNA gene sequences of 36 specimens of Acanthaspidiidae, including 17 specimens of Acanthaspidia drygalskii Vanhöffen, 1914. This species is known from several locations along the Antarctic shelf, supporting the idea of a circum-Antarctic distribution of this taxon. Our molecular data support the monophyly of all six species analysed, but there is only limited evidence for the interspecific relationships between the species. However, we were able to identify three distinct groups of haplotypes within Acanthaspidia drygaskii. Our results indicate the evidence of cryptic, reproductively isolated species. Further data are needed to understand mechanisms underlying speciation in deep sea isopods.

Abstract:
Seventeen species of Leucophenga subpollinosa species group are described from China (including 11 new species): L. argentina (de Meijere, 1924); L. flavicosta Duda, 1926; L. formosa Okada, 1987; L. nigroscutellata Duda, 1924; L. subpollinosa (de Meijere, 1914); L. umbratula Duda, 1924; L. aculeata sp. nov.; L. acuticauda sp. nov.; L. cultella sp. nov.; L. cyclophylla sp. nov.; L. flaviclypeata sp. nov.; L. fuscipedes sp. nov.; L. gracilenta sp. nov.; L. latipenis sp. nov.; L. magnicauda sp. nov.; L. rhombura sp. nov.; L. rugatifolia sp. nov. A key to all examined species of the subpollinosa group in the present study is provided. The phylogenetic relationships among the 17 species of the subpollinosa group are reconstructed by NJ (Neighbor-joining) and Bayesian analyses using 98 DNA sequences of COI (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) gene. The pairwise intra- and interspecific p-distances of aforementioned sequences are summarized.

Abstract:
Beleza. Moda.
