Abstract:
Gordon Riley was an outstanding scientist who played a leading international role in the development of oceanography as a field of scientific study in the mid-twentieth century. His multidisciplinary approach, quantitative skills, imagination and intuition advanced our knowledge and understanding of the ocean enormously. Of his many significant scientific contributions to oceanography, he is best known for his pioneering work in developing simple numerical models for improving the understanding of the dynamics of marine ecosystems with a focus on plankton. He helped transform oceanography from a descriptive to a quantitative science. His early career was spent in the United States at the Bingham Oceanographic Laboratory of Yale University and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In 1965, at the peak of his career, he immigrated to Canada to become the director of the Institute of Oceanography at Dalhousie University. Under his leadership, the Institute evolved into the Department of Oceanography, which became an internationally recognized centre for marine research and teaching. During this period, he also played a prominent role in the development of the broader Canadian oceanographic community. He served as a wonderful example of how scientific research, teaching and a life should be carried out.

Abstract:
The Palaearctic species of the genus Pristaulacus Kieffer, 1900 are revised and illustrated for the first time. Twenty-one valid species are recognized. Two new species are described: P. edoardoi Turrisi, sp. nov., from Crete Island and Greece, and P. paglianoi Turrisi, sp. nov., from Morocco and Tunisia. Four new synonymies are proposed: Aulacus (Pristaulacus) holtzi Schulz, 1906 = P. compressus (Spinola, 1808) (syn. nov.); P. bimaculatus arozarenae Ortega & Baez, 1985 = P. galitae (Gribodo, 1879) (syn. nov.); Aulacus sibiricola Semenow, 1892 = P. gibbator (Thunberg, 1822) (syn. nov.); P. holzschuhi Madl, 1990 = P. gloriator (Fabricius, 1804) (syn. nov.). The following synonymies are confirmed on the basis of the study of type material: P. obscuripennis Westwood, 1841 = P. compressus (Spinola, 1808); P. bimaculatus Kieffer, 1900 and P. immaculatus Kieffer, 1904 = P. galitae (Gribodo, 1879). Three nomina nuda: A. beckeri Tournier, 1911, A. plurimaculatus Tournier, 1911, and A. transversostriatus Tournier, 1911, previously assigned to the genus Aulacus, are all synonyms of P. compressus (Spinola, 1808) (syn. nov.). The previously unknown male of P. boninensis Konishi, 1990 is described. Lectotypes and paralectotypes of P. comptipennis Enderlein, 1912, P. immaculatus Kieffer, 1904, and P. bimaculatus arozarenae Ortega & Baez, 1985 are designated. A key to species and distributional maps are also provided.

AbstractArchaeological investigations formed part of the conservation work of Project Blizzard in 1985–86 at the site of Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–14) huts, Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay. The extent and nature of the archaeological resources are described, and the results of excavations inside the main hut in 1985 are summarized. Excavation stratigraphy is interpreted in the light of the documented post-abandonment history of the site, and used to measure the extent to which human activity inside the hut may be contributing to its deterioration.

Abstract:
Mitius was initially described by Gorochov in 1985, using Gryllus flavipes (=Mitius flavipes) Chopard, 1928 as the type species. To date, nine species have been discovered across the world (Storozhenko, Kim & Jeon, 2015; Cigliano et al. 2021). Mitius castaneus (Chopard, 1937) and Mitius vaturu (Otte & Cowper, 2007) have truncate frons similar to Loxoblemmus Saussure, 1877, while the remaining seven species (Mitius blennus (Saussure, 1877), Mitius enatus Gorochov, 1994, Mitius eryuanensis Yuan, Xie & Liu, 2021, M. flavipes, Mitius minor (Shiraki, 1911), Mitius minutulus Yang & Yang, 1995, and Mitius splendens (Shiraki, 1930)) have a standard round frons. A new species with truncate frons that was discovered in Xizang autonomous region, China is described and illustrated in this paper.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Archilejeunea (Spruce 1884: 88) Stephani (1888: 113) is a pantropical genus with about 28 species in two subgenera, subg. Archilejeunea with five species and the remaining ones in subg. Dibrachiella (Spruce 1884: 90) Schiffner (1893: 130) (Gradstein & Buskes 1985). The genus has been well-studied in the Neotropics and Australia (Gradstein & Buskes 1985; Thiers & Gradstein 1989; Gradstein 1994; Gradstein & Schäfer-Verwimp 2012) but the treatments of the African and Asiatic species are incomplete or outdated (e.g., Stephani 1911; Verdoorn 1934; Vanden Berghen 1951; Udar & Awasthi 1981a, 1982; Mizutani 1993; Gradstein et al. 2002). Several species have not been studied since their first publication. Moreover, recent molecular-phylogenetic studies indicate that Archilejeunea is not monophyletic (Wilson et al. 2007). Members of A. subg. Archilejeunea were resolved in a clade with Caudalejeunea (Stephani 1890: 18) Schiffner (1893: 129) and Schiffneriolejeunea Verdoorn (1933: 89), while those of A. subg. Dibrachiella resolved in a distant clade with species of Spruceanthus Verdoorn (1934: 151) and Ptychanthus Nees (1838: 211). As a result, the genus urgently needs revision.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Dendrobium Swartz (1799: 82) comprises approximately 1500 species and is one of the largest genera of Orchidaceae. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia, from India to Japan, south to Malaysia and Indonesia, east to Australia, New Guinea and the Pacific islands (Cribb & Govaerts, 2005; Wood 2006; Zhu et al. 2009). Recently, there have been debates about the generic delimitation of Dendrobium (Kraenzlin 1910, Schlechter 1911–1914, Tang & Wang 1951, Brieger 1981, Seidenfaden 1985, Yukawa et al. 2000, Clements & Jones 2002, Clements 2003, Wood 2006, Burke et al. 2008, Adams 2011, Schuiteman 2011, Xiang et al. 2013). Here we follow the broad concept of Dendrobium. There are about 80 species in China, of which 14 species are endemic (Chen, 2009).

It comprises five species: the type species, Sympolymnia lucasi (Taczanowski, 1871), comb. nov., Sympolymnia lauretta (Peckham & Peckham, 1892), comb. nov., Sympolymnia edwardsi (Cutler, 1985), comb. nov. and Sympolymnia shinahotasp. nov. and S. cutlerisp. nov.Sympolymnia lauretta (Peckham & Peckham, 1892) is recorded from Bolivia for the first time. Ontogenetic shifts of ant-resemblance are observed: Juveniles of S. cutlerisp. nov. and S. lauretta mimic black ants of the genus Crematogaster Lund, 1831, but those of S. shinahotasp. nov. most closely resemble Pseudomyrmex ethicus (Forel, 1911). Adults of S. cutlerisp. nov., S. lauretta and S. shinahotasp. nov. resemble the ant Camponotus sanctaefidei Dalla Torre, 1892 and orange adults of S. shinahotasp. nov. are putative mimics of Camponotus latangulus Roger, 1863.

Abstract:
Ceraeochrysa Adams is the largest genus in Chrysopini with 62 valid species distributed in the New World. The taxonomy of this group is complex and largely based on male genitalic characters. There are still serious complications, especially with the species that have been described solely from female specimens. The male of C. montoyana (Navás, 1913), unknown previously, is herein described for the first time, and compared with its closest relative, C. claveri (Navás, 1911). Ceraeochrysa acutipuppis Adams & Penny, 1985 is designated as a junior synonym of C. fairchildi (Banks, 1946) based on the evidence that both species share external morphological features uncommon in other species of the genus. The species C. claveri, C. fairchildi and C. montoyana are recorded from Venezuela for the first time. External morphology and genitalia of these insects are described and illustrated.

Abstract:
Drought assessment is very important to manage water resources in lean period. In the present study, identification of drought years and extent of deficit of annual rainfall is accomplished by use of three meteorological based drought indices like the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration index (SPEI), China-Z index (CZI) and Modified China-Z index (MCZI) on 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 month (short term and long term) timescales using monthly precipitation and temperature data from 1901 to 2002 at Sabarkantha to specify the drought conditions in present study area. The analysis of multiple time steps in drought indices make it harder to decide the best time step to show the drought conditions. The months of January, March, November and December have been identified 76, 79, 77 and 80 times as drought months respectively in the 20th century, indicating that these months must be provided with assured Irrigation. It is observed that 1904, 1911, 1915, 1923, 1974, 1987 and 2002 affected by severe drought condition in SPEI-12. The China Z Index and Modified China Z index shows that’s 1904, 1911, 1915, 1918, 1923, 1948, 1951, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1974, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2002 affected by extreme drought. The study also reveals that only 1% year obtain as extreme wet conditions. From result it shows that 23% years are categorised into moderate to extreme drought years, which includes 15% Moderate dry, 8% severe dry years.

Abstract:
Abstract We investigated the source characteristics of large earthquakes which occurred in the Michoacan, Mexico, seismic gap during the period from 1981 to 1986 in relation to historical seismicity in the region. The rupture pattern of the Michoacan gap during this period can be characterized by a sequential failure of five distinct asperities. Before 1981, the Michoacan gap had not experienced a large earthquake since 1911 when an MS = 7.8 earthquake occurred. The recent sequence started in October 1981 with the Playa Azul earthquake which broke the central part of the gap. Body-wave modeling indicates that the Playa Azul earthquake is 27 km deep with a seismic moment of 7.2 × 1027 dyne-cm. It is slightly deeper than the recent Michoacan earthquakes, and its stress drop is higher, suggesting a higher stress level at depths in the Michoacan gap. The seismic moment of the 19 September 1985 (Mw = 8.1) earthquake was released in two distinct events, with the rupture starting in the northern portion of the seismic gap and propagating to the southeast with low moment release through the area already broken by the 1981 Playa Azul earthquake. The rupture propagated further southeast with an Mw = 7.5 event on 21 September 1985. Another aftershock occurred on 30 April 1986 to the northwest of the 19 September main shock. Body-wave modeling indicates that this event has a simple source 10 sec long at 21 km depth, and fault parameters consistent with subduction of the Cocos plate (ϑ = 280°, δ = 12°, and λ = 70°) and M0 = 2.0 to 3.1 × 1026 dyne-cm (Mw = 6.8 to 6.9). Although this distribution of asperities is considered characteristic of the Michoacan gap, whether the temporal sequence exhibited by the 1981 to 1986 sequence is also characteristic of this gap or not is unclear. It is probable that, depending on the state of stress in each asperity, the entire gap may fail in either a single large event with a complex time history or a sequence of moderate to large events spread over a few years. The seismic moment and the time since the last earthquake in Michoacan (in 1911) fit an empirical relation between moment and recurrence time found for the Guerrero-Oaxaca region of the Mexico subduction zone.

Abstract:
Bruno Kreisky and Franz König or the fear of the past ? Bruno Kreisky (1911-1990), Federal Chancellor from 1970 to 1983, President of the Social-Democratic Party, and Franz König (1905-1990), Archbishop of Vienna from 1956 to 1985, both marked the period and their political and ideological camps. Both imposed reforms and both built brifges between the Blacks (the Conservatice Catholic camp) and the Reds (the Social-Democratic camp). Having both lived through the Second World War, Kreisky in exile and Königin Austria part of the time, they both wanted peace and worked for better understanding between the peoples. Nevertheless, neither of them dared face up to Austria’s recent past, nor to their respective camps disturbing relations with that past. Men of their time, they contributed to creating and developing the Austrian nation while trying to dodge any direct confrontation with the National Socialist active cadres.

Abstract:
The generic taxonomy and host specialization of Xenidae have been understood differently by previous authors. Although the recent generic classification has implied a specialization on the level of host families or subfamilies, the hypothesis that each xenid genus is specialized to a single host genus was also previously postulated. A critical evaluation of the classification of the genera of Xenidae is provided here based on morphology in accordance with results of recent molecular phylogenetic studies. External features of the female cephalothoraces and male cephalothecae were documented in detail with different techniques. Diagnoses and descriptions are presented for all 13 delimited genera. The earliest diverging genera are usually well characterized by unique features, whereas deeply nested genera are usually characterized by combinations of characters. Three new genera are described: Sphecixenosgen. nov., Tuberoxenosgen. nov., and Deltoxenosgen. nov. Five previously described genera are removed from synonymy: Tachytixenos Pierce, 1911, stat. res.; Brasixenos Kogan & Oliveira, 1966, stat. res.; Leionotoxenos Pierce, 1909, stat. res.; Eupathocera Pierce, 1908, stat. res.; and Macroxenos Schultze, 1925, stat. res. One former subgenus is elevated to generic rank: Nipponoxenos Kifune & Maeta, 1975, stat. res.Monobiaphila Pierce, 1909, syn. nov. and Montezumiaphila Brèthes, 1923, syn. nov. are recognized as junior synonyms of Leionotoxenos Pierce, 1909, stat. res.Ophthalmochlus Pierce, 1908, syn. nov., Homilops Pierce, 1908, syn. nov., Sceliphronechthrus Pierce, 1909, syn. nov., and Ophthalmochlus (Isodontiphila) Pierce, 1919, syn. nov. are recognized as junior synonyms of Eupathocera Pierce, 1908, stat. res. A preliminary checklist of 119 described species of Xenidae with information on their hosts and distribution is provided. The following 14 species are recognized as valid and restituted from synonymy: Tachytixenos indicus Pierce, 1911, stat. res.; Brasixenos acinctus Kogan & Oliveira, 1966, stat. res.; Brasixenos araujoi (Oliveira & Kogan, 1962), stat. res.; Brasixenos bahiensis Kogan & Oliveira, 1966, stat. res.; Brasixenos brasiliensis Kogan & Oliveira, 1966, stat. res.; Brasixenos fluminensis Kogan & Oliveria, 1966, stat. res.; Brasixenos myrapetrus Trois, 1988, stat. res.; Brasixenos zikani Kogan & Oliveira, 1966, stat. res.; Leionotoxenos hookeri Pierce, 1909, stat. res.; Leionotoxenos jonesi Pierce, 1909, stat. res.; Leionotoxenos louisianae Pierce, 1909, stat. res.; Eupathocera luctuosae Pierce, 1911, stat. res.; Eupathocera lugubris Pierce, 1909, stat. res.; Macroxenos piercei Schultze, 1925, stat. res. The species diversity of Xenidae probably remains poorly known: the expected number of species is at least twice as high as the number presently described.

Abstract:
Abstract This article aims to complement two earlier ones by Theo van der Meer and Joke Swiebel in the previous issue of this journal (Swiebel, 2019; Van der Meer, 2019) on the history of homosexuality’s criminalisation in the Netherlands by exploring the same theme from a Belgian perspective. Whereas article 248bis of the Dutch penal code raised the age of consent for homosexual relations from 1911 to 1971, its highly similar Belgian counterpart, article 372bis, was only adopted in 1965 and repealed again in 1985. The analysis will not only devote attention to this striking chronological divergence, but also point to important parallels and cross-border connections. While, individually, this contribution is primarily an attempt to tentatively contextualise homosexuality’s legal history in Belgium, it may be hoped that, together with Van der Meer’s and Swiebel’s, it may serve as a call for more much-needed comparative research on the history of (homo)sexuality in the Low Countries.

Abstract:
In Steven Spielberg's cinema the flight is a recurring theme. Flying scenes can be sorted into two classes: those involving a realistic flight – by aircraft – and those involving a magical flight – by supernatural powers. The realistic flight is influenced by the war stories of Spielberg's father – a radio man in U.S. Air-force during WWII – and it is featured in such films as Empire of the Sun (1987), Always (1989), and 1941 (1979). The magical flight is influenced by James M. Barries' character Peter Pan (Peter and Wendy, 1911), which is quoted directly in E.T. the Extraterrestrial (1982) and, above all, in Hook (1991), which is a sequel to Barrie's story. These two types of flying scenes are analysed as to their meanings, compared to the models that influenced them, and surveyed as to their evolution across Spielberg's films. A central case study is the episode The Mission from Amazing Stories (1985), in which the realistic and the magical flights overlap.

Abstract. Occurrence of successive earthquake events in space is analysed by means of semi-stochastic processes. The analysis employs earthquakes events with M > 5.2 from the area of Greece and its surroundings (18-31° E, 34-43° N) for the time interval 1911-1985. The sequence of earthquake occurrences can be only marginally described by a first order Markov chain model. Substitutability analysis incorporates the results of Markov Chains, revealing, though, detailed interrelations of parts (subareas) of the study area, not appreciated in Markov Chain analysis. Reactivation of particular subareas provides an insight into the level of interaction between neighbouring seismogenic sources within a subarea. The earthquake occurrence pattern provides evidence for the effect of a significant stress diffusion through time in the sense of a stress front. Taking into account the limitations of the methodologies applied, results indicate the importance of large-scale monitoring of seismicity, which assist in the identification of particular characteristics of the earthquake occurrence in space and time.

Redescriptions are given for numerous further species, redefining diagnostic characters and geographical distributions. Todothyas colligera (K. Viets, 1923) and Wandesia propinqua Walter, 1947 are redefined and newly established as separate species. Parathyas primitiva Lundblad, 1935 is transferred to the genus Todothyas Cook, 1974. Sperchon vaginosus Thor, 1902 is re-established as a distinct species in the ’denticulatus-group’. Torrenticola laskai Di Sabatino spec. nov. is introduced as a new name for Mediterranean populations attributed by several authors to T. lativalvata K. Viets, 1952. Torrenticola amplexa minutivalvata Lundblad, 1956 is elevated to species rank.

The well-studied members of the group are placed into six genera: Bavia Simon, 1877, Indopadilla Caleb & Sankaran, 2019, Padillothorax Simon, 1901, Piranthus Thorell, 1895, Stagetillus Simon, 1885, and one new genus, Maripanthus Maddison, gen. nov. The identity of Padillothorax is clarified, and Bavirecta Kanesharatnam & Benjamin, 2018 synonymized with it. Hyctiota Strand, 1911 is synonymized with Stagetillus. The molecular phylogeny divides the baviines into three clades, the Piranthus clade with a long embolus (Piranthus, Maripanthus), the genus Padillothorax with a flat body and short embolus, and the Bavia clade with a higher body and (usually) short embolus (remaining genera). In general, morphological synapomorphies support or extend the molecularly delimited groups. Eighteen new species are described: Bavia nessagyna, Indopadilla bamilin, I. kodagura, I. nesinor, I. redunca, I. redynis, I. sabivia, I. vimedaba, Maripanthus draconis (type species of Maripanthus), M. jubatus, M. reinholdae, Padillothorax badut, P. mulu, Piranthus api, P. bakau, P. kohi, P. mandai, and Stagetillus irri, all sp. nov., with taxonomic authority W. Maddison. The distinctions between baviines and the astioid Nungia Żabka, 1985 are reviewed, leading to four species being moved into Nungia from Bavia and other genera. Fifteen new combinations are established: Bavia maurerae (Freudenschuss & Seiter, 2016), Indopadilla annamita (Simon, 1903), I. kahariana (Prószyński & Deeleman-Reinhold, 2013), I. sonsorol (Berry, Beatty & Prószyński, 1997), I. suhartoi (Prószyński & Deeleman-Reinhold, 2013), Maripanthus menghaiensis (Cao & Li, 2016), M. smedleyi (Reimoser, 1929), Nungia hatamensis (Thorell, 1881), N. modesta (Keyserling, 1883), N. papakula (Strand, 1911), N. xiaolonghaensis (Cao & Li, 2016), Padillothorax casteti (Simon, 1900), P. exilis (Cao & Li, 2016), P. flavopunctus (Kanesharatnam & Benjamin, 2018), Stagetillus banda (Strand, 1911), all comb. nov. One combination is restored, Bavia capistrata (C. L. Koch, 1846). Five of these new or restored combinations correct previous errors of placing species in genera that have superficially similar palps but extremely different body forms, in fact belonging in distantly related tribes, emphasizing that the general shape of male palps should be used with caution in determining relationships. A little-studied genus, Padillothorus Prószyński, 2018, is tentatively assigned to the Baviini. Ligdus Thorell, 1895 is assigned to the Ballini.

Abstract:
Spiraea yunnanensis Franchet (1890: 200) var. siccanea W. W. Smith (1917: 69) was described on the basis of two collections, G. Forrest 9912 and 9972, from Yunnan province, China, but without indicating the type. These specimens should be treated as syntypes in accordance with Article 9.5 of the ICN (McNeill et al. 2012). Rehder (1933: 205) treated it as a distinct species and considered it could be easily distinguished from S. yunnanensis by the leaf blades being adaxially glabrous (vs. pilose) and abaxially sparsely pilose (vs. densely white tomentose). Although this treatment is accepted by latter botanists, its type is still not designated (Yu & Lu 1974, Wu 1984, Lu & Crinan 2003, Zhou & Xu 2006, Businský 2011). We traced nine specimens that fit the protologue, i.e. five duplicate specimens labeled “G. Forrest 9972” (barcodes A00033520, BM000622233, E000385320, K000737489, PE00703468) and four duplicate specimens labeled “G. Forrest 9912” (A00033519, BM000622232, E00385319, K000737490). The specimen (G. Forrest 9972, barcode E000385320) is better preserved and more complete, and W. W. Smith worked at E as deputy keeper in 1911–1922 (Stafleu & Cowan 1985), therefore we designate it as the lectotype for this taxon.

Abstract:
AbstractMany different polychaete-echinoderm relationships have been described, from tropical to polar environments. Most of these associations have been generally defined as ‘commensal’, with polychaetes guests usually found on the oral surface of their hosts or, in a very few cases, even inside the host's body. Here we present an inquilinistic association involving two Antarctic species, the polychaete Gorekia crassicirris (Willey, 1902) (Polynoidae) and the irregular sea urchin Abatus nimrodi (Koheler, 1911) (Schizasteridae) found in the Ross Sea. This record is only the second worldwide for this kind of association, after that of the polychaete Benthoscolex cubanus which lives in the gut of the spatangoid Archeopneustes hystrix in Caribbean waters. Gorekia crassicirris seems to be a polyxenous species as it was also observed on another schizasterid, Brachysternaster chescheri Larrain, 1985 in the Weddell Sea. Considering that A. nimrodi is absent from that area and that the two sea urchin species have a disjoint distribution, it is possible that a ‘host-switch’ phenomenon occurred at some stage. We review the available literature to compare the Antarctic pairing with the other known examples of similar associations.

Abstract:
Once upon a time, the Crown faced almost no difficulties in securing convictions for breaches of the Official Secrets Act 1911, particularly section 2. After the somewhat embarrassing decision to proceed had been taken, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Occasionally, the jury revolted, as they did in Ponting [1985] Crim. L.R. 315, producing something like a perverse verdict in the face of the judicial direction that it was no defence that the defendant believed himself to be acting in the public interest. That decision, and the ruling of the House of Lords in the Spycatcher litigation [1990] 1 A.C. 109 to the effect that the former security service agent Peter Wright did not commit an actionable breach of confidence by making his allegations of improper practices within the services, prompted the government of the day to promote legislation that purported to impose life-long obligations of confidence upon members and former members of the security intelligence services. “Purported” because, with the enactment of the Human Rights Act 1998, it is now open to the courts inter alia to declare that Parliament has acted incompatibly with one of the rights protected by that Act.
